present_a to_o man_n we_o know_v how_o we_o prepare_v and_o with_o what_o suitable_a presence_n we_o desire_v to_o offer_v but_o of_o that_o afterward_o when_o we_o come_v to_o speak_v of_o sanctify_a god_n name_v 2_o second_o remember_v when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n i_o come_v to_o set_v myself_o before_o the_o lord_n in_o those_o way_n that_o god_n do_v let_v out_o the_o choice_n of_o his_o mercy_n to_o his_o people_n in_o i_o have_v many_o mercy_n from_o god_n in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o creature_n but_o when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o i_o expect_v the_o communication_n of_o his_o mercy_n in_o another_o way_n than_o through_o any_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n be_v the_o chief_a channel_n that_o god_n do_v let_v out_o the_o choice_a of_o his_o mercy_n to_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n through_o and_o now_o i_o be_o go_v to_o worship_v he_o i_o be_o go_v to_o present_v myself_o fore_o god_n indeed_o there_o be_v a_o little_a glimmer_n of_o the_o light_n of_o god_n through_o other_o creature_n to_o i_o but_o the_o glorious_a beam_n of_o the_o light_n of_o god_n be_v through_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n 3._o and_o then_o three_o i_o be_o now_o go_v to_o act_v my_o soul_n upon_o god_n so_o that_o if_o i_o have_v any_o ability_n to_o close_v with_o god_n to_o act_v my_o soul_n upon_o he_o it_o must_v be_v put_v forth_o now_o at_o this_o time_n i_o be_o indeed_o at_o all_o time_n to_o labour_n to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o god_n when_o i_o see_v the_o creature_n the_o sun_n moon_n and_o star_n to_o labour_v to_o lift_v up_o my_o heart_n to_o god_n and_o when_o i_o see_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n in_o the_o sea_n and_o for_o my_o meat_n and_o drink_n i_o be_o to_o bless_v god_n and_o to_o acknowledge_v god_n in_o all_o but_o when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n than_o all_o the_o strength_n of_o my_o soul_n be_v to_o be_v act_v upon_o god_n in_o a_o more_o special_a manner_n i_o must_v then_o above_o all_o labour_n to_o stir_v up_o whatsoever_o i_o have_v in_o my_o soul_n to_o act_v upon_o god_n this_o be_v now_o to_o worship_n god_n second_o if_o to_o worship_n god_n be_v to_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n hence_o we_o see_v the_o reason_n why_o guilty_a conscience_n have_v little_a mind_n to_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n when_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n have_v give_v liberty_n to_o any_o licentious_a way_n and_o sin_v against_o their_o conscience_n if_o they_o have_v any_o light_n in_o their_o conscience_n it_o be_v one_o of_o the_o tedious_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v to_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n they_o have_v rather_o do_v any_o thing_n than_o come_v to_o holy_a duty_n as_o to_o prayer_n and_o especial_o to_o secret_a prayer_n a_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o have_v a_o enlighten_v conscience_n and_o be_v under_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n the_o come_n to_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n be_v a_o very_a grievous_a burden_n to_o they_o why_o here_o be_v the_o reason_n because_o to_o worship_n god_n be_v to_o draw_v to_o god_n and_o the_o guilt_n that_o be_v upon_o they_o have_v make_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n terrible_a to_o they_o and_o therefore_o they_o have_v rather_o go_v into_o their_o company_n and_o be_v merry_a eat_v drink_v sport_n or_o any_o thing_n rather_o than_o to_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n we_o know_v how_o it_o be_v with_o adam_n when_o god_n appear_v in_o the_o garden_n and_o call_v to_o he_o he_o run_v to_o hide_v himself_o why_o because_o he_o have_v guiltiness_n upon_o he_o oh_o the_o evil_a that_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n bring_v upon_o the_o soul_n it_o make_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n terrible_a the_o presence_n of_o god_n it_o shall_v be_v more_o comfortable_a to_o we_o than_o our_o life_n but_o our_o sin_n make_v god_n presence_n grievous_a and_o terrible_a a_o child_n sometime_o when_o it_o have_v offend_v the_o father_n and_o be_v conscious_a to_o its_o self_n of_o the_o offence_n that_o it_o have_v give_v the_o father_n it_o have_v rather_o be_v in_o the_o kitchen_n among_o the_o servant_n than_o to_o come_v into_o the_o hall_n or_o parlour_n where_o the_o father_n be_v because_o it_o have_v offend_v he_o and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o guilty_a conscience_n when_o it_o be_v conscious_a to_o its_o self_n of_o some_o haunt_n of_o evil_n that_o it_o have_v give_v itself_o unto_o it_o have_v no_o mind_n at_o all_o of_o come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o father_n but_o hang_v off_o my_o brethren_n the_o very_a presence_n of_o god_n in_o the_o communion_n of_o his_o saint_n be_v terrible_a to_o a_o guilty_a conscience_n the_o very_a look_v upon_o a_o godly_a man_n be_v terrible_a to_o a_o guilty_a conscience_n when_o as_o thou_o have_v be_v abroad_o and_o be_v loose_a and_o wicked_a in_o thy_o way_n i_o appeal_v to_o thy_o conscience_n when_o thou_o come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o some_o holy_a gracious_a man_n or_o woman_n that_o live_v close_o with_o god_n do_v it_o
the_o six_o and_o last_o reason_n have_v a_o great_a deal_n in_o it_o which_o i_o beseech_v you_o consider_v of_o we_o find_v that_o the_o scripture_n do_v make_v the_o uprightness_n of_o the_o heart_n much_o to_o consist_v in_o preparation_n for_o worship_n and_o do_v make_v the_o falseness_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o consist_v in_o this_o that_o man_n do_v not_o prepare_v perhaps_o you_o have_v not_o so_o much_o think_v of_o this_o but_o yet_o it_o be_v of_o excellent_a use_n unto_o you_o we_o shall_v find_v the_o scripture_n do_v make_v the_o very_a uprightness_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o consist_v in_o the_o preparation_n for_o duty_n and_o the_o falseness_n of_o a_o man_n heart_n to_o consist_v in_o this_o that_o he_o make_v not_o conscience_n to_o prepare_v his_o heart_n for_o god_n and_o his_o worship_n and_o this_o i_o will_v show_v unto_o you_o very_o plain_o and_o clear_o take_v these_o two_o example_n the_o first_o of_o rehoboam_n and_o the_o second_o of_o jehoshaphat_n one_o a_o wicked_a man_n who_o heart_n be_v false_a and_o the_o other_o a_o godly_a man_n who_o heart_n be_v right_a with_o god_n the_o falseness_n of_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o one_o be_v in_o 2_o chron._n 12._o 14._o there_o you_o have_v what_o god_n thought_n of_o rehoboam_n be_v in_o the_o verse_n before_o but_o now_o he_o bring_v the_o reason_n of_o his_o sentence_n upon_o he_o and_o say_v the_o text_n he_o do_v evil_a because_o he_o prepare_v not_o his_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n there_o be_v many_o good_a thing_n that_o rehoboam_n do_v i_o may_v show_v you_o some_o thing_n as_o how_o he_o do_v obey_v the_o prophet_n of_o god_n when_o he_o be_v seek_v to_o avenge_v himself_o upon_o those_o that_o do_v rend_v themselves_o from_o his_o obedience_n the_o lord_n do_v but_o send_v his_o prophet_n and_o though_o he_o have_v a_o army_n ready_a to_o revenge_v himself_o upon_o those_o that_o in_o a_o way_n of_o rebellion_n do_v rend_v themselves_o from_o under_o his_o government_n and_o he_o obey_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o for_o all_o that_o he_o do_v evil_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o lord_n god_n look_v upon_o he_o as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v no_o uprightness_n in_o he_o why_o for_o he_o do_v not_o prepare_v his_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n say_v god_n i_o look_v upon_o all_o rehoboam_n do_v as_o nothing_o look_v upon_o his_o way_n as_o evil_n and_o himself_o as_o a_o wicked_a man_n why_o because_o he_o do_v not_o prepare_v his_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n if_o his_o heart_n have_v be_v upright_o with_o i_o he_o will_v have_v prepare_v his_o heart_n to_o seek_v i_o i_o beseech_v you_o now_o lie_v this_o text_n to_o your_o heart_n do_v you_o prepare_v your_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n when_o you_o go_v to_o prayr_a can_v you_o say_v that_o you_o take_v pain_n in_o prepare_v your_o heart_n for_o it_o and_o in_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o so_o likewise_o for_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n now_o for_o jehoshaphat_n a_o godly_a man_n in_o 2_o chron._n 19_o 3._o there_o you_o may_v see_v what_o the_o lord_n say_v of_o jehoshaphat_n that_o be_v godly_a nevertheless_o there_o be_v good_a thing_n find_v in_o thou_o in_o that_o thou_o have_v take_v way_n the_o grove_n out_o of_o the_o land_n and_o have_v prepare_v thy_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n jehoshaphat_n be_v find_v guilty_a in_o join_v himself_o to_o wicked_a man_n too_o much_o the_o prophet_n come_v and_o say_v to_o he_o will_v thou_o help_v the_o ungodly_a and_o love_v they_o that_o hate_v the_o lord_n therefore_o be_v wrath_n upon_o thou_o from_o before_o the_o lord_n jehoshaphat_n here_o we_o see_v be_v very_o faulty_a in_o join_v with_o those_o that_o be_v wicked_a and_o be_v rebuke_v by_o the_o prophet_n from_o the_o lord_n what_o will_v thou_o join_v with_o the_o wicked_a the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v upon_o thou_o well_o but_o for_o all_o that_o i_o beseech_v you_o observe_v it_o that_o at_o that_o time_n when_o the_o lord_n be_v most_o displease_v against_o jehoshaphat_n and_o send_v his_o prophet_n in_o his_o name_n to_o pronounce_v this_o that_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v out_o against_o he_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o god_n can_v but_o take_v notice_n of_o this_o that_o he_o have_v a_o upright_a heart_n though_o he_o fail_v in_o that_o particular_a yet_o there_o be_v some_o good_a find_v in_o thou_o in_o that_o thou_o have_v prepare_v thy_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n indeed_o through_o some_o sudden_a temptation_n thou_o be_v draw_v aside_o in_o this_o particular_a act_n yea_o but_o it_o have_v be_v thy_o care_n to_o prepare_v thy_o heart_n to_o seek_v i_o and_o in_o that_o regard_n i_o do_v look_v upon_o thou_o as_o have_v a_o upright_a heart_n and_o thus_o you_o see_v how_o much_o the_o scripture_n put_v upon_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o seek_v god_n and_o so_o in_o 1_o sam._n 7._o 3._o you_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o scripture_n make_v the_o uprightness_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o consist_v in_o this_o and_o samuel_n speak_v unto_o all_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n say_v if_o you_o do_v return_n unto_o the_o lord_n with_o all_o your_o heart_n what_o then_o then_o put_v away_o the_o strange_a god_n and_o ashtaroth_n from_o among_o you_o and_o prepare_v your_o heart_n unto_o the_o lord_n and_o serve_v he_o only_o as_o if_o samuel_n shall_v say_v if_o you_o will_v return_v indeed_o to_o the_o lord_n if_o indeed_o your_o heart_n be_v upright_o according_a to_o what_o you_o seem_v to_o profess_v in_o turn_v to_o god_n then_o prepare_v your_o heart_n to_o seek_v the_o lord_n you_o do_v not_o in_o truth_n turn_v to_o god_n except_o you_o make_v conscience_n to_o prepare_v your_o heart_n therefore_o you_o that_o never_o yet_o know_v what_o it_o be_v to_o make_v conscience_n to_o prepare_v your_o heart_n for_o holy_a duty_n know_v that_o you_o have_v not_o turn_v with_o all_o your_o heart_n unto_o the_o lord_n there_o have_v not_o be_v the_o true_a turn_n of_o your_o heart_n unto_o the_o lord_n thus_o you_o see_v there_o be_v much_o lie_v upon_o preparation_n to_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n well_o you_o will_v say_v see_v there_o lie_v so_o much_o in_o it_o i_o pray_v open_v it_o wherein_o it_o do_v consist_v to_o that_o i_o answer_v it_o consist_v in_o these_o five_o thing_n which_o i_o shall_v brief_o name_v first_o in_o the_o possess_n the_o heart_n with_o the_o right_a apprehension_n of_o that_o god_n before_o who_o we_o come_v to_o tender_v our_o duty_n then_o do_v we_o make_v conscience_n to_o prepare_v our_o heart_n when_o we_o labour_v upon_o our_o go_v to_o worship_n god_n to_o get_v our_o heart_n beforehand_o possess_v with_o right_a apprehension_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o that_o god_n that_o we_o be_v go_v to_o worship_n and_o of_o the_o greatness_n and_o weight_n of_o the_o duty_n that_o we_o be_v set_v about_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o the_o manner_n how_o it_o be_v to_o be_v perform_v the_o rule_n by_o which_o we_o be_v to_o be_v guide_v the_o end_n that_o we_o be_v to_o aim_v at_o meditation_n be_v a_o good_a preparation_n to_o holy_a duty_n and_o these_o be_v the_o general_a head_n of_o our_o meditation_n for_o our_o preparation_n to_o duty_n viz._n 1._o what_o god_n he_o be_v we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o meditate_v of_o god_n in_o his_o attribute_n and_o then_o meditate_v of_o the_o weight_n of_o our_o duty_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o they_o and_o the_o rule_n of_o they_o and_o the_o end_n of_o they_o get_v your_o heart_n possess_v with_o meditation_n of_o this_o nature_n and_o in_o this_o at_o a_o special_a thing_n do_v consist_v your_o preparation_n to_o holy_a duty_n 2._o the_o second_o thing_n wherein_o the_o preparation_n to_o a_o duty_n consist_v it_o be_v this_o the_o take_v off_o of_o the_o heart_n from_o every_o sinful_a way_n the_o endeavour_n at_o least_o if_o there_o be_v iniquity_n in_o thy_o hand_n or_o heart_n labour_v to_o put_v it_o out_o when_o thou_o be_v to_o come_v into_o godâ—_n presence_n do_v not_o bring_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n the_o love_n of_o any_o sin_n in_o thy_o heart_n but_o labour_n to_o put_v it_o from_o thy_o heart_n in_o 2_o chron._n 29._o 5._o we_o find_v there_o what_o be_v require_v to_o preparation_n the_o text_n say_v hezekiah_n say_v unto_o they_o hear_v i_o you_o levite_n sanctify_v now_o yourselves_o and_o sanctify_v the_o house_n of_o the_o lord_n god_n of_o your_o father_n and_o carry_v forth_o the_o filthiness_n out_o of_o the_o holy_a place_n that_o be_v sanctify_v a_o thing_n to_o carry_v forth_o the_o filthiness_n out_o of_o that_o thing_n that_o we_o will_v sanctify_v so_o the_o sanctify_a of_o our_o heart_n it_o be_v by_o
carry_v forth_o the_o filthiness_n out_o of_o our_o heart_n so_o as_o to_o be_v fit_a for_o a_o duty_n and_o in_o job_n 11._o 13_o 14._o if_o thou_o prepare_v thy_o heart_n and_o stretch_v out_o thy_o hand_n towards_o he_o what_o then_o if_o iniquity_n be_v in_o thy_o hand_n put_v it_o far_o away_o and_o let_v not_o wickedness_n dwell_v in_o thy_o tabernacle_n these_o two_o must_v be_v together_o 3._o a_o three_o thing_n be_v this_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n it_o be_v the_o disintangling_a of_o the_o heart_n from_o the_o world_n and_o from_o all_o occasion_n and_o business_n in_o the_o world_n i_o be_o to_o worship_n god_n but_o how_o be_v my_o heart_n ensnare_v and_o entangle_v in_o this_o and_o the_o othere_o business_n now_o when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n i_o must_v lay_v aside_o all_o for_o there_o be_v the_o preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n the_o separate_n of_o it_o for_o such_o a_o work_n for_o that_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o sanctification_n the_o separate_n of_o a_o thing_n from_o a_o common_a use_n i_o be_o to_o worship_n god_n now_o i_o must_v labour_v to_o separate_v my_o heart_n from_o a_o common_a use_n at_o other_o time_n god_n give_v i_o liberty_n to_o let_v out_o my_o heart_n to_o common_a use_n but_o now_o when_o i_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o i_o must_v separate_v my_o heart_n from_o all_o common_a use_n that_o my_o heart_n may_v be_v whole_o for_o god_n i_o remember_v it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o story_n of_o sicily_n which_o be_v lord_n treasurer_n that_o when_o he_o go_v to_o read_v he_o will_v lay_v his_o gown_n off_o and_o say_v lie_v there_o lord_n sicily_n so_o when_o we_o go_v to_o duty_n we_o shall_v say_v lie_v by_o world_n and_o by_o lay_v aside_o the_o world_n i_o mean_v lay_v aside_o of_o all_o household_n affair_n or_o affair_n in_o trade_n etc._n etc._n i_o must_v be_v as_o one_o that_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v in_o the_o world_n for_o that_o time_n it_o be_v true_a the_o time_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v holy_a for_o this_o as_o the_o time_n of_o the_o sabbath_n day_n be_v holy_a you_o will_v say_v why_o may_v not_o any_o time_n be_v say_v to_o be_v holy_a that_o i_o spend_v in_o holy_a duty_n no_o that_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o make_v time_n holy_a for_o the_o time_n that_o god_n make_v holy_a it_o be_v not_o holy_a because_o of_o the_o duty_n that_o i_o perform_v in_o it_o but_o the_o duty_n that_o i_o perform_v then_o be_v more_o acceptable_a because_o they_o be_v do_v in_o such_o a_o time_n and_o so_o that_o make_v a_o place_n holy_a not_o because_o it_o be_v appoint_v for_o holy_a duty_n and_o use_n but_o because_o it_o be_v so_o appoint_v by_o god_n and_o the_o perform_v a_o duty_n in_o that_o place_n be_v more_o acceptable_a to_o god_n than_o in_o another_o place_n but_o now_o though_o we_o can_v make_v our_o time_n holy_a in_o that_o second_o sense_n yet_o in_o the_o first_o it_o be_v time_n set_v apart_o for_o a_o holy_a use_n and_o in_o that_o regard_n it_o be_v holy_a and_o so_o we_o shall_v look_v upon_o it_o as_o not_o to_o have_v our_o outward_a business_n to_o devour_v that_o time_n that_o be_v holy_a in_o that_o regard_n as_o nehemiah_n when_o tobiah_n and_o sanballat_n send_v to_o he_o to_o come_v and_o confer_v with_o they_o no_o say_v he_o i_o can_v go_v for_o the_o work_n be_v great_a that_o i_o have_v to_o do_v so_o we_o must_v not_o entangle_v ourselves_o to_o meddle_v with_o other_o thing_n when_o we_o be_v to_o come_v to_o worship_n god_n for_o our_o work_n be_v great_a the_o four_o thing_n for_o preparation_n be_v to_z watch_z and_o to_o pray_v we_o shall_v watch_v over_o our_o heart_n lest_o they_o be_v make_v unfit_a for_o duty_n so_o we_o shall_v prepare_v for_o prayer_n all_o day_n long_o in_o this_o sense_n that_o be_v we_o shall_v watch_v over_o our_o heart_n that_o they_o be_v not_o let_v out_o so_o far_o as_o to_o hinder_v we_o in_o prayer_n when_o we_o come_v to_o do_v it_o i_o remember_v that_o tertullian_n say_v that_o the_o christian_n do_v so_o sup_v as_o if_o they_o be_v to_o pray_v so_o when_o thou_o be_v in_o company_n thou_o shall_v watch_v unto_o prayer_n oh_o that_o you_o do_v so_o you_o can_v but_o be_v conscious_a to_o yourselves_o that_o oftentimes_o when_o you_o have_v be_v in_o company_n your_o heart_n have_v be_v put_v out_o of_o tune_n and_o frame_v that_o you_o have_v be_v no_o way_n fit_a for_o prayer_n when_o you_o come_v home_o your_o house_n and_o family_n find_v it_o so_o you_o that_o take_v such_o delight_n in_o company_n and_o sit_v up_o late_o i_o appeal_v to_o your_o conscience_n whether_o you_o can_v come_v home_o and_o find_v yourselves_o fit_a either_o in_o your_o family_n or_o closet_n to_o go_v and_o open_v you_o heart_n to_o god_n this_o be_v one_o note_v by_o the_o way_n whereby_o you_o may_v come_v to_o know_v whether_o you_o have_v be_v immoderate_a in_o company_n at_o any_o time_n god_n give_v not_o man_n liberty_n to_o be_v busy_a in_o any_o outward_a occasion_n so_o as_o to_o unfit_a they_o for_o his_o service_n preparation_n consist_v in_o that_o in_o watch_v over_o your_o heart_n that_o you_o may_v not_o be_v unfit_a for_o any_o holy_a duty_n when_o god_n call_v you_o to_o it_o but_o that_o you_o may_v be_v ready_a even_o to_o every_o good_a work_n the_o five_o note_n be_v this_o preparation_n consist_v in_o the_o readiness_n of_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n '_o present_o to_o act_v upon_o the_o set_n upon_o a_o holy_a duty_n when_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n shall_v find_v the_o faculty_n of_o their_o soul_n and_o the_o grace_n that_o be_v in_o they_o to_o be_v ready_a to_o act_v assoon_o as_o ever_o they_o fall_v upon_o duty_n just_o as_o you_o see_v a_o company_n of_o ringer_n when_o they_o have_v make_v all_o preparation_n for_o the_o raise_n of_o the_o bell_n then_o in_o a_o instant_n when_o thy_o begin_v to_o pull_v all_o the_o bell_n go_v in_o that_o tune_n that_o according_a to_o their_o skill_n they_o set_v they_o in_o and_o so_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o our_o heart_n the_o faculty_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o grace_n though_o now_o we_o be_v not_o upon_o duty_n yet_o we_o shall_v be_v so_o ready_a that_o as_o it_o be_v upon_o a_o pull_n all_o the_o faculty_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n shall_v work_v in_o a_o melodious_a way_n there_o be_v those_o that_o keep_v their_o heart_n so_o prepare_v as_o at_o the_o very_a first_o moment_n that_o they_o set_v about_o the_o duty_n of_o worship_n all_o faculty_n and_o grace_n in_o it_o as_o first_o by_o this_o mean_n we_o come_v to_o make_v every_o duty_n of_o worship_n easy_a to_o we_o thing_n be_v difficult_a when_o we_o come_v upon_o they_o unprepared_a if_o you_o have_v a_o friend_n come_v to_o dinner_n or_o supper_n to_o you_o and_o shall_v come_v sudden_o and_o you_o have_v nothing_o prepare_v there_o will_v be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o stir_n in_o the_o house_n but_o if_o you_o have_v every_o thing_n prepare_v it_o will_v be_v carry_v on_o in_o a_o easy_a way_n and_o the_o reason_n why_o people_n complain_v so_o much_o of_o difficulty_n in_o duty_n it_o be_v because_o their_o heart_n be_v not_o prepare_v indeed_o we_o have_v natural_o many_o thing_n that_o keep_v we_o off_o from_o god_n but_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v prepare_v for_o a_o holy_a duty_n it_o go_v off_o as_o easy_a to_o god_n even_o into_o the_o infinite_a ocean_n of_o all_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n as_o a_o ship_n go_v off_o to_o be_v launch_v when_o you_o have_v make_v preparation_n for_o it_o so_o the_o heart_n can_v go_v with_o a_o holy_a holdness_n to_o god_n when_o you_o have_v make_v preparation_n for_o holy_a duty_n in_o job_n 11._o the_o place_n which_o i_o quote_v before_o for_o the_o work_n of_o preparation_n do_v but_o consider_v a_o verse_n or_o two_o further_a and_o you_o shall_v find_v what_o abundance_n of_o good_a there_o come_v upon_o the_o preparation_n to_o the_o duty_n that_o we_o be_v to_o perform_v the_o answer_n to_o that_o be_v this_o we_o must_v distinguish_v of_o person_n there_o be_v some_o that_o be_v exercise_v in_o the_o way_n of_o godliness_n and_o do_v keep_v their_o heart_n close_o with_o god_n in_o the_o way_n of_o holiness_n now_o for_o they_o it_o may_v be_v suppose_v that_o through_o their_o exercise_n in_o the_o way_n of_o godliness_n and_o keep_v of_o their_o heart_n constant_a with_o god_n in_o communion_n with_o he_o walk_v with_o god_n close_o that_o they_o be_v at_o all_o time_n prepare_v to_o every_o good_a work_n and_o fit_v to_o fulfil_v that_o command_n of_o the_o apostle_n pray_v continual_o that_o be_v in_o the_o disposition_n of_o their_o heart_n they_o be_v fit_a to_o pray_v at_o any_o time_n there_o be_v no_o day_n in_o the_o week_n nor_o no_o hour_n in_o the_o day_n but_o they_o if_o god_n call_v they_o to_o it_o can_v fall_v down_o to_o solemn_a prayer_n and_o indeed_o this_o be_v a_o excellent_a condition_n and_o a_o good_a evidence_n of_o the_o heart_n walk_v close_o with_o god_n that_o there_o be_v no_o time_n but_o they_o be_v fit_a to_o pray_v and_o fit_a for_o any_o ordinance_n yea_o to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n it_o be_v possible_a to_o keep_v the_o heart_n so_o close_o to_o god_n as_o to_o be_v fit_a for_o prayer_n and_o for_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n and_o for_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n every_o day_n or_o any_o hour_n in_o the_o day_n but_o this_o need_v a_o very_a close_o walk_v with_o god_n and_o communion_n with_o god_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v this_o be_v very_o rare_a most_o man_n let_v out_o their_o heart_n so_o much_o to_o other_o thing_n as_o their_o conscience_n can_v but_o tell_v they_o that_o if_o god_n call_v they_o to_o prayer_n at_o such_o a_o time_n in_o the_o day_n they_o be_v altogether_o unfit_a for_o it_o if_o they_o be_v call_v to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n their_o conscience_n will_v accuse_v they_o and_o tell_v they_o they_o be_v unfit_a for_o it_o but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o those_o that_o walk_v close_o with_o god_n though_o they_o be_v in_o the_o world_n you_o will_v say_v if_o a_o man_n have_v business_n in_o the_o world_n how_o can_v this_o be_v yes_o though_o they_o have_v business_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o they_o carry_v the_o heavenliness_n of_o their_o heart_n along_o with_o they_o our_o conversation_n be_v in_o heaven_n say_v the_o apostle_n phil._n 3._o now_o the_o word_n that_o be_v translate_v our_o conversation_n it_o be_v a_o word_n that_o signify_v our_o city_n converse_v our_o trade_n be_v in_o heaven_n when_o we_o go_v to_o the_o city_n or_o exchange_n or_o about_o any_o business_n yet_o our_o trade_n be_v always_o in_o heaven_n but_o now_o there_o be_v other_o sort_n of_o people_n that_o have_v need_n at_o all_o time_n to_o look_v to_o their_o heart_n in_o way_n of_o preparation_n as_o first_o those_o that_o first_o set_v upon_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n young_a beginner_n that_o begin_v at_o first_o to_o set_v their_o face_n towards_o heaven_n to_o worship_n god_n they_o have_v need_n look_v to_o their_o heart_n they_o shall_v spend_v some_o time_n in_o preparation_n when_o they_o come_v to_o holy_a duty_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v when_o the_o conscience_n of_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v at_o first_o enlighten_v and_o awaken_v they_o will_v be_v very_o careful_a in_o prepare_v to_o holy_a duty_n the_o fear_n of_o god_n it_o be_v mighty_a upon_o their_o spirit_n at_o first_o and_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v less_o afterward_o the_o constancy_n of_o god_n fear_v shall_v bring_v their_o heart_n to_o such_o a_o holy_a temper_n as_o to_o make_v they_o fit_a for_o holy_a duty_n always_o second_o those_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o any_o time_n shall_v sin_v against_o conscience_n shall_v commit_v such_o sin_n as_o shall_v in_o a_o kind_n even_o lie_v waste_a conscience_n shall_v to_o enjoy_v communion_n with_o god_n but_o they_o have_v need_v beforehand_o be_v very_o serious_a in_o the_o examination_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o to_o endeavour_v the_o work_n of_o their_o heart_n into_o mourning_n for_o their_o sin_n and_o to_o labour_v to_o possess_v their_o soul_n with_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n even_o before_o they_o come_v these_o two_o sort_n of_o people_n such_o as_o have_v not_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o way_n of_o godliness_n or_o such_o as_o have_v break_v their_o peace_n with_o god_n by_o some_o evil_a carriage_n of_o they_o towards_o god_n in_o some_o vile_a way_n i_o say_v it_o be_v requy_v of_o they_o to_o be_v more_o solemn_a in_o the_o work_n of_o preparation_n 2._o but_o now_o for_o the_o second_o case_n which_o indeed_o be_v the_o main_a suppose_v when_o we_o come_v to_o duty_n and_o begin_v to_o examine_v our_o heart_n and_o begin_v to_o bethink_v ourselves_o whether_o we_o be_v prepare_v yea_o or_o no_o to_o holy_a duty_n and_o we_o do_v not_o find_v our_o heart_n prepare_v according_a to_o that_o that_o we_o do_v desire_n whether_o then_o we_o may_v let_v the_o duty_n go_v for_o that_o time_n and_o forbear_v the_o performance_n of_o it_o as_o suppose_v prayer_n or_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n or_o come_v to_o the_o word_n or_o any_o other_o holy_a duty_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o doubt_n be_v because_o when_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v conscientious_a they_o think_v with_o themselves_o that_o they_o must_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n now_o if_o they_o can_v find_v their_o heart_n in_o a_o fit_a disposition_n to_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n they_o be_v ready_a to_o think_v thus_o be_v it_o not_o better_a to_o neglect_v this_o duty_n and_o lay_v it_o aside_o for_o the_o present_a will_v god_n accept_v of_o a_o duty_n when_o i_o perform_v it_o and_o be_o not_o set_v for_o it_o therefore_o for_o the_o answer_n to_o this_o because_o it_o be_v a_o temptation_n that_o sometime_o carnal_a heart_n have_v and_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o take_v this_o temptation_n and_o willing_a to_o neglect_v the_o duty_n upon_o such_o a_o thought_n as_o this_o that_o they_o be_v not_o prepare_v and_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o be_v more_o glad_a to_o let_v the_o duty_n fall_v than_o they_o be_v sorry_a for_o want_v of_o the_o preparation_n of_o their_o heart_n for_o the_o duty_n i_o beseech_v you_o consider_v of_o this_o whether_o you_o have_v not_o find_v it_o so_o that_o sometime_o when_o you_o have_v not_o be_v fit_a to_o perform_v a_o holy_a duty_n there_o have_v not_o be_v a_o more_o secret_a willingness_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o let_v the_o duty_n go_v than_o a_o sorrow_n of_o the_o heart_n because_o you_o be_v not_o fit_a for_o the_o duty_n this_o be_v a_o very_a evil_a sign_n that_o the_o heart_n be_v very_o much_o distemper_v those_o that_o be_v godly_a indeed_o when_o they_o find_v not_o their_o heart_n prepare_v for_o the_o duty_n it_o be_v the_o trouble_n of_o their_o soul_n it_o be_v that_o which_o go_v near_o their_o heart_n when_o they_o think_v with_o themselves_o that_o they_o be_v now_o like_a to_o lose_v a_o duty_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n they_o be_v now_o like_a to_o lose_v their_o communion_n with_o god_n in_o a_o holy_a duty_n they_o even_o look_v upon_o themselves_o in_o a_o evil_a case_n in_o regard_n of_o this_o and_o it_o make_v they_o watchful_a for_o time_n to_o come_v to_o take_v heed_n of_o those_o thing_n that_o have_v put_v they_o in_o such_o a_o unpreparation_n as_o they_o find_v their_o heart_n to_o be_v in_o at_o this_o time_n now_o if_o it_o be_v so_o with_o thou_o it_o be_v a_o good_a sign_n that_o thy_o heart_n may_v be_v upright_o with_o god_n
though_o through_o infirmity_n it_o come_v at_o such_o a_o time_n to_o be_v unprepared_a for_o the_o duty_n but_o yet_o suppose_v i_o find_v i_o be_o not_o prepare_v i_o be_o grieve_v and_o trouble_v at_o it_o for_o that_o must_v be_v premise_v whether_o be_v i_o better_a to_o leave_v the_o duty_n for_o this_o time_n than_o to_o fall_v upon_o it_o in_o such_o a_o unpreparation_n as_o this_o be_v now_o for_o the_o answer_n to_o this_o question_n first_o that_o which_o i_o will_v answer_v to_o it_o be_v this_o the_o omission_n of_o a_o duty_n or_o the_o lay_n of_o a_o duty_n aside_o will_v never_o fit_v the_o soul_n for_o a_o duty_n afterward_o it_o be_v no_o way_n to_o make_v thy_o soul_n more_o fit_a afterward_o because_o thou_o have_v lay_v it_o aside_o now_o for_o the_o present_a do_v but_o observe_v your_o own_o heart_n that_o way_n and_o you_o will_v find_v this_o by_o experience_n such_o a_o time_n you_o have_v be_v busy_a in_o the_o world_n and_o occasion_n have_v hinder_v you_o so_o as_o your_o heart_n be_v out_o of_o temper_n and_o frame_v for_o a_o duty_n you_o lay_v it_o aside_o now_o be_v you_o more_o fit_a the_o next_o day_n if_o you_o do_v neglect_v duty_n in_o the_o morning_n upon_o any_o business_n be_v you_o fit_a to_o perform_v duty_n at_o night_n because_o of_o it_o you_o will_v not_o find_v it_o to_o be_v so_o the_o forbear_v a_o duty_n now_o will_v not_o make_v the_o soul_n fit_a for_o a_o duty_n afterward_o therefore_o it_o be_v no_o wisdom_n to_o forbear_v a_o duty_n for_o want_n of_o preparation_n because_o the_o forbearance_n will_v never_o help_v to_o further_a prepartion_n but_o will_v make_v the_o soul_n more_o unfit_a for_o duty_n it_o be_v a_o excellent_a speech_n that_o i_o read_v that_o luther_n have_v concern_v himself_o i_o have_v learn_v this_o by_o experience_n that_o the_o often_o i_o do_v omit_v duty_n the_o often_o do_v i_o make_v myself_o the_o more_o unfit_a for_o duty_n and_o cause_n i_o have_v to_o abhor_v myself_o it_o be_v not_o the_o defer_v that_o make_v thou_o the_o more_o fit_a 2._o therefore_o consider_v that_o this_o be_v but_o a_o temptation_n and_o that_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n that_o i_o will_v propound_v to_o those_o that_o shall_v omit_v a_o duty_n because_o they_o be_v not_o prepare_v that_o this_o be_v but_o a_o temptation_n to_o keep_v thou_o from_o it_o to_o tell_v thou_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o prepare_v and_o if_o thou_o shall_v forbear_v it_o because_o thou_o be_v not_o prepare_v in_o this_o thing_n thou_o do_v gratify_v the_o devil_n and_o the_o devil_n have_v what_o he_o will_v have_v and_o so_o will_v be_v encourage_v to_o tempt_v thou_o another_o time_n because_o he_o have_v now_o what_o he_o will_v have_v in_o cause_v thou_o to_o forbear_v the_o duty_n first_o he_o labour_v to_o unfit_a thou_o for_o it_o and_o then_o he_o tempt_v thou_o to_o forbear_v it_o because_o thou_o be_v unfit_a this_o be_v the_o subtlety_n of_o the_o devil_n from_o whence_o be_v it_o that_o thou_o be_v unfit_a but_o from_o the_o temptation_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o i_o find_v luther_n again_o that_o be_v a_o man_n that_o have_v as_o much_o converse_n with_o god_n as_o any_o in_o his_o day_n and_o a_o man_n that_o have_v as_o much_o to_o draw_v his_o heart_n away_o as_o many_o temptation_n and_o as_o many_o business_n as_o any_o for_o indeed_o the_o great_a cause_n of_o christ_n in_o all_o the_o christian_a world_n in_o a_o great_a measure_n under_o god_n lay_v upon_o his_o shoulder_n and_o yet_o say_v he_o if_o any_o one_o think_v that_o prayer_n must_v be_v defer_v till_o the_o soul_n be_v purify_v from_o impure_a cogitation_n he_o do_v no_o other_o than_o help_v the_o devil_n who_o be_v powerful_a enough_o he_o think_v to_o be_v wise_a in_o defer_v the_o duty_n because_o he_o be_v not_o fit_a and_o he_o have_v many_o ill_a thought_n and_o trouble_n in_o his_o spirit_n he_o do_v nothing_o else_o say_v luther_n but_o gratify_v the_o devil_n that_o be_v strong_a enough_o without_o this_o oh_o let_v we_o take_v heed_n of_o gratify_v the_o devil_n in_o his_o temptation_n therefore_o remember_v it_o be_v a_o temptation_n for_o thou_o to_o omit_v a_o duty_n mere_o because_o thou_o be_v not_o prepare_v for_o the_o duty_n 3._o in_o the_o three_o place_n that_o which_o i_o will_v answer_v to_o this_o question_n be_v this_o if_o any_o one_o perform_v a_o duty_n of_o worship_n in_o that_o sincerity_n and_o strength_n that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v it_o though_o he_o be_v not_o prepare_v as_o he_o ought_v yet_o it_o be_v better_a to_o do_v it_o than_o to_o neglect_v it_o it_o be_v true_a some_o do_v perform_v a_o duty_n in_o a_o mere_a formal_a way_n and_o to_o satisfy_v their_o conscience_n or_o to_o cloak_n and_o cover_v their_o sin_n and_o the_o like_a perhaps_o they_o may_v so_o perform_v it_o as_o it_o may_v be_v better_a to_o be_v unperformed_a than_o to_o perform_v it_o as_o they_o do_v but_o if_o you_o do_v endeavour_n to_o the_o uttermost_a of_o your_o strength_n to_o do_v it_o though_o you_o be_v not_o prepare_v as_o you_o do_v desire_n yet_o it_o be_v better_a to_o do_v it_o than_o to_o omit_v the_o do_n of_o it_o and_o you_o will_v find_v it_o so_o for_o one_o duty_n do_v prepare_v for_o another_o though_o it_o be_v not_o do_v as_o i_o desire_v it_o shall_v be_v do_v yet_o the_o do_v of_o it_o as_o well_o as_o i_o can_v at_o this_o time_n will_v help_v i_o to_o do_v it_o better_o at_o another_o time_n that_o be_v certain_a as_o one_o sin_n do_v prepare_v the_o heart_n for_o another_o sin_n so_o one_o duty_n prepare_v the_o heart_n for_o another_o as_o now_o suppose_v a_o man_n commit_v a_o sin_n and_o he_o have_v a_o conscience_n that_o be_v enlighten_v that_o do_v hinder_v he_o from_o commit_v his_o sin_n with_o that_o full_a strength_n that_o he_o will_v do_v it_o many_o a_o man_n have_v a_o mind_n to_o sin_n but_o through_o the_o enlighten_v of_o his_o conscience_n he_o can_v sin_v with_o that_o delight_n as_o he_o will_v because_o his_o conscience_n fly_v in_o his_o face_n and_o do_v interrupt_v he_o but_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o through_o the_o strength_n of_o his_o corruption_n he_o will_v break_v through_o to_o that_o sin_n now_o though_o at_o first_o they_o can_v commit_v that_o sin_n with_o that_o delight_n and_o freedom_n as_o they_o do_v at_o other_o time_n yet_o if_o their_o corruption_n be_v so_o strong_a as_o to_o break_v through_o the_o light_n of_o their_o conscience_n the_o next_o time_n they_o come_v to_o the_o commit_n of_o that_o sin_n they_o will_v commit_v it_o with_o more_o freedom_n and_o ease_v a_o great_a deal_n this_o be_v evident_a by_o experience_n there_o be_v none_o of_o you_o but_o if_o you_o well_o observe_v your_o heart_n you_o will_v find_v this_o a_o temptation_n come_v to_o a_o sin_n now_o you_o can_v do_v it_o with_o so_o much_o freedom_n as_o you_o will_v but_o yet_o you_o break_v through_o it_o you_o will_v find_v that_o the_o next_o time_n you_o will_v commit_v it_o with_o more_o freedom_n and_o so_o one_o sin_n will_v prepare_v for_o another_o and_o it_o may_v be_v you_o have_v some_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n at_o first_o but_o the_o next_o time_n you_o will_v have_v less_o trouble_n till_o at_o length_n you_o can_v commit_v it_o free_o without_o any_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n at_o all_o as_o it_o be_v in_o sin_n so_o it_o be_v in_o godliness_n many_o time_n in_o some_o degree_n at_o the_o first_o you_o have_v a_o motion_n to_o a_o holy_a duty_n but_o through_o the_o stir_n of_o your_o corruption_n you_o be_v not_o fit_a for_o it_o now_o do_v you_o but_o break_v through_o that_o difficulty_n and_o the_o next_o time_n you_o will_v be_v more_o fit_a and_o the_o next_o time_n after_o that_o you_o will_v be_v more_o fit_a and_o so_o still_o more_o and_o more_o fit_a as_o it_o be_v in_o sin_n if_o a_o man_n when_o he_o have_v some_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n will_v but_o listen_v to_o his_o conscience_n and_o will_v not_o commit_v that_o sin_n his_o conscience_n will_v grow_v strong_a upon_o he_o and_o strengthen_v he_o against_o that_o sin_n so_o if_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n listen_v to_o the_o temptation_n to_o defer_v duty_n and_o put_v it_o off_o because_o they_o be_v not_o prepare_v why_o after_o that_o the_o corruption_n will_v grow_v more_o strong_a therefore_o set_v upon_o the_o duty_n and_o the_o performance_n of_o one_o duty_n will_v prepare_v for_o another_o 4._o in_o the_o four_o place_n while_o man_n and_o woman_n be_v struggle_v with_o their_o soul_n and_o the_o corruption_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o do_v not_o fall_v upon_o seek_v

that_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n to_o have_v the_o duty_n to_o be_v such_o as_o be_v some_o way_n suitable_a to_o such_o a_o god_n as_o we_o be_v now_o worship_v now_o then_o let_v we_o consider_v what_o the_o scripture_n say_v of_o god_n and_o then_o let_v we_o see_v what_o suitable_a disposition_n we_o shall_v have_v in_o we_o unto_o those_o thing_n that_o the_o scripture_n say_v of_o god_n 1._o first_o you_o know_v the_o scripture_n say_v that_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n in_o joh._n 4._o 24._o then_o present_o christ_n say_v that_o he_o that_o worship_v he_o must_v worship_v of_o soul_n as_o this_o be_v that_o have_v be_v speak_v of_o to_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n thou_o will_v be_v loath_a to_o lose_v those_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o thou_o do_v perform_v therefore_o it_o be_v require_v of_o thou_o to_o sanctify_v his_o name_n lest_o thou_o do_v lose_v all_o for_o it_o be_v this_o that_o make_v thou_o the_o only_a capable_a subject_n of_o what_o good_a be_v to_o be_v have_v there_o 5._o we_o must_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n because_o otherwise_o we_o shall_v certain_o never_o hold_v out_o in_o duty_n but_o vanish_v and_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o for_o ever_o and_o he_o will_v have_v this_o worship_n that_o we_o perform_v to_o he_o but_o to_o be_v the_o begin_n of_o that_o eternal_a worship_n that_o he_o shall_v have_v from_o we_o in_o heaven_n and_o so_o the_o saint_n do_v worship_n god_n now_o the_o worship_n which_o they_o perform_v it_o be_v but_o as_o the_o begin_n of_o that_o worship_n that_o hereafter_o in_o heaven_n they_o shall_v tender_v up_o to_o god_n though_o there_o may_v be_v some_o difference_n in_o it_o as_o there_o our_o prayer_n will_v be_v turn_v into_o praise_n and_o it_o will_v not_o be_v in_o such_o outward_a ordinance_n as_o now_o we_o worship_v god_n in_o there_o will_v be_v no_o preach_v nor_o sacrament_n yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o soul_n worship_n that_o be_v now_o will_v be_v with_o they_o now_o as_o it_o be_v yea_o they_o be_v fall_v off_o it_o may_v be_v from_o their_o very_a profession_n of_o religion_n and_o turn_v loose_a and_o now_o to_o be_v in_o vain_a company_n to_o drink_v or_o play_v be_v better_a to_o they_o than_o any_o service_n of_o worship_n of_o god_n they_o prize_v more_o to_o be_v in_o company_n with_o their_o sport_n than_o to_o hear_v a_o sermon_n or_o to_o be_v in_o communion_n with_o the_o people_n of_o god_n in_o prayer_n heretofore_o they_o will_v not_o have_v change_v one_o short_a time_n of_o private_a communion_n with_o god_n for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o pleasure_n and_o content_a in_o the_o world_n but_o now_o it_o be_v otherwise_o with_o they_o how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o these_o be_v apostatise_v thus_o from_o god_n sure_o this_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o it_o that_o they_o do_v not_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n at_o the_o most_o it_o be_v but_o a_o work_n of_o conscience_n that_o put_v they_o upon_o they_o and_o they_o have_v but_o some_o flash_n there_o be_v no_o real_a sanctification_n of_o their_o heart_n whereby_o they_o do_v sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o upon_o this_o it_o be_v that_o they_o have_v leave_v off_o this_o i_o dare_v say_v that_o there_o be_v never_o any_o soul_n that_o do_v know_v what_o it_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o worship_n that_o ever_o be_v weary_a of_o worship_v god_n it_o may_v be_v some_o of_o you_o may_v say_v we_o have_v hard_o that_o there_o be_v much_o require_v in_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o duty_n and_o that_o be_v the_o only_a way_n to_o weary_a the_o soul_n and_o to_o make_v it_o fall_v off_o oh_o no_o as_o we_o say_v the_o last_o day_n there_o be_v not_o any_o one_o thing_n that_o have_v be_v open_v for_o the_o sanctifi_n of_o god_n name_n in_o duty_n that_o any_o gracious_a heart_n can_v tell_v how_o to_o miss_v and_o the_o more_o we_o do_v sanctify_v his_o name_n the_o more_o we_o shall_v be_v in_o love_n with_o worship_n for_o it_o be_v from_o hence_o that_o those_o that_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o worship_n will_v hold_v out_o because_o they_o will_v find_v the_o sweetness_n of_o worship_n they_o will_v meet_v with_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o so_o they_o come_v to_o be_v encourage_v in_o worship_n but_o as_o for_o other_o who_o do_v worship_n god_n in_o a_o formal_a way_n their_o worship_n will_v prove_v to_o be_v tedious_a to_o they_o for_o they_o perform_v the_o duty_n but_o do_v not_o find_v god_n in_o the_o duty_n in_o that_o spiritual_a way_n as_o the_o saint_n do_v if_o they_o think_v they_o meet_v with_o god_n it_o be_v but_o a_o imagination_n rather_o than_o any_o real_a meeting_n with_o he_o they_o do_v not_o find_v the_o influence_n of_o god_n in_o their_o soul_n in_o holy_a duty_n so_o as_o those_o do_v that_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n here_o than_o you_o see_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o be_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o holy_a duty_n now_o then_o for_o the_o application_n of_o all_o this_o 1._o if_o all_o this_o which_o you_o have_v be_v require_v of_o we_o for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n hence_o we_o see_v how_o little_a cause_n we_o have_v to_o rest_v upon_o any_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o we_o do_v perform_v certain_o the_o duty_n of_o worship_n that_o we_o perform_v be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v rest_v upon_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n and_o yet_o for_o the_o most_o part_n there_o be_v scarce_o any_o thing_n that_o people_n have_v to_o rest_v upon_o or_o to_o tender_v up_o to_o god_n for_o acceptation_n to_o eternal_a life_n but_o only_o their_o prayer_n and_o their_o come_n to_o hear_v and_o receive_v of_o the_o communion_n and_o such_o duty_n that_o they_o perform_v this_o be_v all_o they_o have_v to_o tender_v up_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n perhaps_o they_o may_v sometime_o speak_v of_o christ_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v that_o which_o their_o heart_n rest_v upon_o for_o acceptation_n to_o eternal_a life_n be_v this_o and_o be_v it_o but_o this_o it_o be_v a_o weak_a prop_n a_o rot_a reed_n that_o thou_o have_v to_o rest_v upon_o let_v the_o duty_n of_o worship_n be_v perform_v never_o so_o well_o suppose_v we_o do_v sanctify_v god_n name_n to_o the_o uttermost_a that_o be_v possible_a for_o any_o creature_n to_o do_v in_o this_o world_n yet_o such_o duty_n be_v not_o to_o be_v rest_v upon_o abraham_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n and_o the_o apostle_n the_o most_o holy_a man_n that_o ever_o do_v preform_v duty_n in_o the_o most_o holy_a manner_n yet_o woe_n to_o they_o if_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o rest_v upon_o but_o their_o duty_n consider_v therefore_o of_o this_o that_o what_o thou_o must_v rest_v upon_o for_o acceptation_n to_o eternal_a life_n it_o must_v be_v that_o which_o must_v have_v so_o much_o worth_n in_o it_o as_o must_v satisfy_v for_o all_o thy_o sin_n that_o former_o thou_o have_v commit_v yea_o and_o for_o all_o the_o sin_n that_o ever_o thou_o shall_v commit_v now_o i_o appeal_v unto_o any_o one_o conscience_n be_v that_o which_o thou_o perform_v be_v prayer_n or_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n or_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n such_o a_o work_n as_o in_o thy_o conscience_n thou_o can_v think_v it_o have_v so_o much_o worth_n in_o it_o as_o to_o satisfy_v god_n for_o all_o the_o sin_n that_o ever_o thou_o

more_o require_v in_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n than_o thou_o have_v be_v acquaint_v with_o there_o be_v a_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o it_o that_o text_n of_o scripture_n be_v a_o very_a design_n at_o all_o but_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o hearken_v to_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a so_o a_o good_a heart_n whatsoever_o be_v good_a he_o be_v ready_a to_o entertain_v if_o it_o be_v a_o good_a thing_n his_o heart_n be_v suitable_a to_o it_o and_o run_v present_o unto_o it_o have_v a_o good_a heart_n it_o do_v present_o close_a with_o the_o good_a word_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o what_o be_v mean_v by_o a_o honest_a heart_n by_o honesty_n of_o heart_n certain_o there_o be_v more_o mean_v than_o such_o a_o one_o that_o we_o call_v a_o honest_a man_n that_o be_v a_o man_n that_o be_v honest_a in_o his_o deal_n between_o man_n and_o man_n there_o be_v many_o a_o man_n that_o be_v account_v a_o very_a honest_a man_n in_o the_o world_n but_o have_v not_o a_o honest_a heart_n i_o beseech_v you_o observe_v it_o that_o man_n that_o have_v a_o honest_a heart_n to_o god_n be_v one_o that_o receive_v the_o seed_n of_o the_o word_n so_o as_o he_o go_v beyond_o the_o highway_n ground_n the_o stony_a ground_n or_o the_o thorny_a ground_n he_o go_v beyond_o those_o three_o sort_n of_o professor_n he_o be_v one_o that_o have_v a_o emenency_n in_o profession_n of_o religion_n beyond_o those_o three_o now_o the_o world_n account_v many_o honest_a man_n that_o do_v not_o go_v beyond_o any_o of_o those_o three_o yea_o the_o world_n do_v ordinary_o account_v any_o of_o those_o three_o to_o be_v honest_a man_n as_o the_o highway_n ground_n be_v there_o not_o many_o honest_a man_n in_o the_o world_n that_o regard_v not_o the_o word_n of_o god_n at_o all_o but_o only_o come_v to_o hear_v a_o sermon_n and_o assoon_o as_o they_o have_v do_v as_o it_o come_v in_o at_o one_o ear_n so_o it_o go_v out_o at_o the_o other_o i_o fear_v there_o be_v some_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o be_v account_v honest_a man_n and_o woman_n in_o the_o world_n that_o can_v hardly_o
give_v a_o account_n of_o any_o one_o sermon_n they_o have_v hear_v in_o all_o their_o life_n hardly_o i_o say_v but_o the_o word_n which_o they_o hear_v be_v present_o take_v away_o from_o they_o and_o yet_o these_o be_v account_v honest_a man_n in_o the_o world_n but_o this_o be_v not_o the_o honest_a heart_n the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o and_o many_o there_o be_v that_o go_v further_o than_o these_o that_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n and_o yet_o they_o have_v not_o this_o honest_a heart_n yea_o they_o may_v hear_v the_o word_n so_o as_o to_o bring_v forth_o a_o blade_n and_o yet_o not_o have_v this_o honest_a heart_n but_o this_o honest_a heart_n i_o take_v therefore_o to_o be_v mean_v this_o a_o heart_n that_o deal_v square_o and_o true_o with_o god_n behave_v itself_o in_o a_o beseem_a manner_n suitable_a to_o that_o authority_n and_o excellency_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o now_o for_o example_n 1._o first_o among_o man_n he_o be_v account_v a_o honest_a man_n that_o deal_v square_o and_o true_o with_o man_n in_o all_o action_n such_o a_o man_n you_o will_v say_v be_v a_o honest_a man_n as_o honest_a a_o man_n as_o ever_o break_v bread_n that_o be_v one_o that_o will_v deal_v square_o with_o man_n not_o only_o in_o one_o thing_n but_o turn_v he_o to_o any_o thing_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v a_o proportion_n between_o one_o action_n and_o another_o so_o this_o be_v a_o honest_a heart_n not_o one_o that_o only_o will_v be_v forward_o for_o god_n in_o some_o one_o action_n wherein_o he_o may_v enjoy_v himself_o as_o well_o as_o god_n but_o one_o that_o deal_v square_o with_o god_n let_v god_n put_v he_o upon_o duty_n upon_o any_o service_n god_n shall_v find_v he_o still_o to_o be_v the_o same_o man_n put_v he_o upon_o any_o easy_a service_n as_o many_o will_v embrace_v that_o or_o put_v he_o upon_o a_o difficult_a service_n it_o be_v all_o one_o if_o it_o be_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n you_o shall_v find_v he_o square_v in_o every_o thing_n though_o he_o be_v put_v upon_o that_o which_o he_o be_v like_a to_o suffer_v very_o much_o in_o yet_o he_o go_v on_o according_a to_o his_o principle_n a_o honest_a heart_n be_v one_o that_o have_v receive_v gracious_a principle_n and_o according_o he_o act_v all_o the_o world_n can_v take_v he_o off_o from_o his_o principle_n of_o godliness_n that_o the_o lord_n have_v put_v into_o his_o heart_n 2._o second_o a_o honest_a man_n be_v one_o that_o provide_v thing_n honest_a before_o man_n that_o do_v all_o thing_n in_o a_o seemly_a way_n in_o all_o those_o relation_n that_o he_o have_v unto_o other_o that_o we_o account_v honesty_n so_o when_o a_o man_n behaviour_n towards_o the_o word_n be_v such_o as_o do_v beseem_v the_o word_n of_o that_o god_n with_o who_o he_o have_v to_o deal_v that_o look_v what_o excellency_n what_o glory_n there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n such_o a_o suitable_a behaviour_n there_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n to_o it_o this_o be_v a_o honest_a heart_n so_o that_o there_o be_v those_o two_o thing_n when_o a_o man_n be_v square_a with_o god_n in_o one_o thing_n as_o well_o as_o another_o and_o when_o there_o be_v a_o sutableness_n in_o the_o behaviour_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o what_o excellency_n there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n when_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n will_v not_o abuse_v the_o word_n at_o all_o but_o behave_v itself_o honest_o according_a unto_o the_o gravity_n holiness_n and_o weight_n that_o there_o be_v in_o the_o word_n and_o thus_o now_o with_o such_o a_o good_a and_o honest_a heart_n we_o be_v to_o receive_v the_o word_n if_o we_o will_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o it_o 10._o a_o ten_o particular_a be_v this_o if_o we_o will_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o the_o word_n we_o must_v hide_v the_o word_n in_o our_o heart_n we_o must_v not_o only_o hear_v the_o word_n but_o keep_v it_o preserve_v it_o and_o then_o we_o do_v declare_v that_o we_o account_v the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o be_v worth_a something_o indeed_o for_o what_o be_v it_o to_o sanctify_v god_n as_o we_o have_v open_v before_o in_o the_o general_n but_o such_o a_o behaviour_n towards_o he_o as_o may_v testify_v the_o excellency_n of_o the_o name_n of_o god_n so_o the_o behaviour_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n must_v be_v such_o as_o must_v give_v a_o testimony_n to_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o word_n and_o manifest_v the_o high_a esteem_n i_o have_v of_o it_o now_o if_o i_o receive_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v of_o great_a value_n if_o i_o slight_a it_o and_o let_v any_o body_n take_v it_o from_o i_o i_o do_v not_o give_v a_o testimony_n of_o the_o excellency_n of_o that_o thing_n but_o if_o i_o take_v it_o and_o lock_v it_o up_o and_o keep_v it_o under_o lock_n and_o key_n i_o do_v thereby_o give_v a_o testimony_n of_o the_o esteem_n that_o i_o have_v of_o the_o excellency_n of_o that_o thing_n so_o now_o when_o i_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o meet_v with_o truth_n that_o i_o have_v get_v into_o my_o soul_n i_o close_o with_o they_o and_o be_o resolve_v within_o my_o heart_n as_o i_o be_o hear_v of_o they_o well_o this_o truth_n i_o will_v keep_v through_o god_n grace_n this_o concern_v i_o and_o i_o will_v make_v much_o of_o it_o and_o although_o i_o forget_v other_o thing_n yet_o i_o hope_v i_o shall_v remember_v this_o to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n in_o isa_n 42._o 23._o hear_v say_v the_o holy_a ghost_n there_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o word_n we_o must_v not_o only_o hearken_v for_o the_o present_a as_o many_o of_o we_o while_o we_o be_v hear_v our_o heart_n be_v stir_v for_o the_o present_a oh_o that_o we_o can_v but_o the_o word_n it_o may_v be_v when_o you_o go_v home_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n fresh_a in_o your_o mind_n but_o on_o the_o monday_n morning_n you_o have_v lose_v some_o but_o then_o there_o be_v some_o other_o that_o do_v yet_o present_v themselves_o before_o you_o and_o then_o you_o lose_v more_o and_o more_o until_o you_o have_v lose_v the_o sight_n of_o all_o all_o truth_n be_v go_v you_o the_o lord_n christ_n know_v my_o infinite_a need_n of_o he_o and_o the_o infinite_a excellency_n that_o there_o be_v in_o jesus_n christ_n my_o soul_n do_v famish_v and_o perish_v for_o ever_o without_o christ_n but_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o christ_n there_o be_v a_o fullness_n for_o the_o satisfy_n of_o my_o soul_n that_o i_o have_v have_v of_o christ_n sometime_o in_o the_o word_n and_o sometime_o in_o prayer_n that_o have_v be_v sweet_a unto_o i_o but_o i_o expect_v a_o further_a communion_n with_o christ_n here_o for_o this_o be_v the_o grand_a ordinance_n for_o communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n indeed_o the_o word_n in_o this_o respect_n it_o be_v beyond_o this_o ordinance_n that_o be_v it_o be_v not_o only_o for_o the_o increase_n of_o grace_n but_o for_o the_o beget_n this_o be_v only_o for_o the_o increase_n of_o grace_n and_o not_o appoint_v for_o the_o beget_n now_o in_o that_o respect_n the_o word_n be_v above_o the_o sacrament_n but_o now_o this_o sacrament_n be_v a_o more_o full_a ordinance_n for_o communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n this_o be_v the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o of_o his_o blood_n and_o jesus_n christ_n there_o in_o the_o ordinance_n to_o come_v so_o as_o they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o live_v without_o christ_n even_o as_o a_o man_n that_o be_v a_o hunger_v can_v live_v without_o his_o meat_n and_o drink_n and_o so_o for_o the_o soul_n to_o have_v such_o a_o disposition_n after_o christ_n this_o be_v a_o rare_a thing_n but_o know_v that_o god_n name_n be_v not_o sanctify_v unless_o thou_o do_v come_v in_o such_o a_o way_n unto_o his_o holy_a sacrament_n that_o be_v the_o four_o thing_n hungry_a and_o thirsty_a desire_n after_o christ_n from_o a_o deep_a sense_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o upon_o that_o they_o curse_v he_o now_o i_o say_v those_o that_o have_v a_o extraordinary_a spirit_n that_o do_v know_v who_o these_o be_v they_o may_v do_v it_o but_o this_o be_v no_o example_n for_o we_o in_o a_o ordinary_a way_n to_o wish_v evil_a and_o curse_n upon_o other_o but_o thus_o far_o we_o may_v do_v with_o the_o enemy_n of_o the_o church_n first_o we_o may_v curse_v they_o disjunctive_o lord_n either_o take_v they_o out_o of_o the_o way_n or_o keep_v they_o that_o they_o may_v not_o do_v such_o mischief_n in_o the_o church_n or_o thus_o conditional_o if_o thou_o see_v lord_n that_o they_o be_v implacable_a thou_o know_v they_o if_o so_o let_v thy_o wrath_n and_o curse_n pursue_v they_o lord_n thou_o see_v what_o evil_a they_o be_v our_o spirit_n in_o prayer_n we_o shall_v take_v heed_n of_o the_o wander_a of_o our_o spirit_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n and_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o so_o in_o prayer_n the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v much_o trouble_v with_o the_o wander_a of_o their_o thought_n both_o in_o word_n and_o sacrament_n and_o it_o be_v their_o great_a burden_n and_o shall_v be_v so_o but_o i_o never_o hear_v any_o more_o complain_n of_o the_o wander_a of_o their_o spirit_n than_o in_o the_o time_n of_o prayer_n the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v much_o pester_v in_o their_o spirit_n with_o this_o evil_a it_o be_v very_o grievous_a unto_o they_o and_o many_o of_o they_o go_v under_o it_o as_o a_o grievous_a burden_n all_o their_o day_n the_o chief_a burden_n that_o be_v upon_o their_o spirit_n be_v their_o wander_a in_o prayer_n so_o that_o if_o god_n shall_v speak_v to_o they_o as_o he_o speak_v unto_o solomon_n and_o bid_v he_o ask_v what_o he_o shall_v give_v he_o i_o very_o believe_v there_o be_v many_o in_o this_o congregation_n that_o have_v already_o good_a assurance_n of_o god_n love_n in_o christ_n if_o they_o have_v not_o that_o that_o will_v be_v the_o main_a thing_n that_o they_o will_v ask_v but_o have_v attain_v that_o if_o god_n will_v speak_v from_o heaven_n and_o say_v what_o shall_v i_o give_v you_o for_o yourselves_o if_o he_o shall_v ask_v you_o in_o the_o general_n it_o may_v be_v you_o will_v ask_v something_o for_o the_o church_n but_o if_o it_o be_v for_o yourselves_o you_o will_v put_v up_o this_o petition_n oh_o lord_n that_o i_o may_v be_v deliver_v from_o a_o wander_a spirit_n in_o holy_a duty_n and_o especial_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n that_o i_o may_v thereby_o come_v to_o enjoy_v more_o holy_a communion_n with_o thyself_o than_o ever_o yet_o i_o enjoy_v and_o they_o will_v account_v this_o to_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n than_o if_o god_n shall_v give_v they_o to_o be_v king_n or_o queen_n over_o the_o whole_a world_n if_o god_n shall_v put_v these_o two_o into_o the_o balance_n either_o the_o whole_a world_n to_o possess_v or_o otherwise_o to_o have_v more_o free_a heart_n in_o come_v to_o god_n in_o prayer_n and_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o that_o which_o have_v so_o much_o hinder_v their_o communion_n with_o god_n in_o prayer_n they_o will_v despise_v and_o scorn_v the_o world_n in_o comparison_n of_o such_o a_o mercy_n as_o this_o be_v howsoever_o carnal_a heart_n they_o think_v little_a of_o it_o but_o those_o that_o be_v the_o servant_n of_o god_n they_o find_v it_o to_o be_v
