grace_n to_o the_o act_n of_o aversation_n and_o resistance_n of_o sin_n and_o temptation_n it_o be_v i_o confess_v a_o acute_a and_o disputable_a inquiry_n yet_o whether_o the_o one_o or_o whether_o the_o other_o the_o soul_n be_v by_o either_o more_o confirm_v and_o establish_v and_o uphold_v and_o keep_v from_o sin_n 3._o by_o quicken_a grace_n which_o be_v when_o god_n do_v inlve_v grace_n by_o quicken_a grace_n our_o grace_n to_o manifest_v themselves_o in_o actual_a opposition_n so_o that_o the_o soul_n shall_v not_o yield_v but_o keep_v off_o from_o entertain_v the_o sin_n as_o when_o in_o the_o motion_n of_o sin_n he_o inflame_v the_o heart_n with_o a_o apprehension_n of_o his_o own_o love_n in_o christ_n and_o then_o excite_v our_o love_n exceed_o unto_o himself_o again_o time_n he_o feel_v no_o active_a or_o lively_a disposition_n he_o can_v find_v no_o mind_n or_o heart_n almost_o insomuch_o that_o either_o he_o can_v do_v little_a or_o nothing_o and_o what_o be_v do_v by_o he_o be_v but_o do_v all_o cheerfulness_n and_o quickness_n seem_v to_o fall_v off_o like_o the_o green_a leaf_n from_o the_o tree_n so_o that_o nothing_o but_o a_o mere_a naked_a carcase_n of_o the_o case_n thus_o uprightness_n answer_v all_o inequality_n in_o holy_a service_n conclude_v not_o against_o uprightness_n first_o all_o inequality_n in_o holy_a service_n do_v not_o conclude_v that_o a_o man_n be_v not_o upright_o look_v as_o the_o natural_a life_n have_v many_o space_n and_o as_o it_o be_v degree_n of_o latitude_n a_o man_n may_v be_v able_a to_o run_v &_o yet_o sometime_o be_v scarce_o able_a to_o go_v these_o motion_n you_o will_v say_v be_v unequal_a nevertheless_o the_o man_n live_v both_o under_o the_o one_o and_o under_o the_o other_o so_o may_v it_o be_v with_o the_o spiritual_a life_n for_o it_o have_v also_o its_o different_a and_o unequal_a space_n sometime_o a_o man_n may_v do_v his_o service_n all_o in_o joy_n other_o time_n all_o in_o tear_n sometime_o his_o will_n be_v great_a and_o performance_n answerable_a other_o time_n his_o will_n be_v dispose_v but_o he_o can_v act_v in_o any_o proportion_n yet_o his_o heart_n live_v upright_o in_o either_o nevertheless_o we_o must_v distinguish_v of_o inequality_n in_o holy_a service_n inequality_n dinguish_v of_o inequality_n there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o they_o some_o arise_v from_o weakness_n of_o strength_n other_o arise_v from_o falseness_n of_o heart_n you_o see_v a_o man_n sometime_o able_a to_o move_v a_o weight_n of_o a_o hundred_o pound_n at_o another_o time_n he_o be_v scarce_o able_a to_o lift_v a_o strength_n from_o weaknese_n of_o strength_n walk-ingstaffe_a why_o because_o his_o strength_n be_v fail_v and_o then_o no_o marvel_n that_o his_o action_n vary_v so_o it_o may_v be_v with_o a_o upright_a man_n god_n be_v please_v sometime_o to_o afford_v unto_o he_o a_o strong_a degree_n of_o heavenly_a assistance_n he_o clear_v his_o judgement_n inable_v his_o faith_n to_o apprehend_v and_o discern_v quicken_v his_o affection_n restrain_v satan_n put_v down_o the_o force_n of_o the_o inward_a contrariety_n why_o at_o such_o a_o time_n the_o soul_n be_v mighty_o active_a in_o the_o power_n of_o receive_v and_o confer_v strength_n at_o another_o time_n the_o wind_n slack_v and_o then_o no_o marvel_n the_o ship_n do_v not_o post_v so_o fast_o the_o spirit_n blow_v when_o and_o where_o &_o how_o he_o list_v there_o be_v not_o always_o such_o a_o communication_n of_o actual_a strength_n and_o then_o our_o desire_n may_v be_v great_a but_o our_o performance_n will_v be_v unequal_a and_o this_o observe_v by_o the_o way_n that_o if_o the_o inequality_n depend_v only_o on_o weakness_n of_o strength_n there_o the_o heart_n still_o keep_v its_o bent_n nay_o be_v most_o inward_o stir_v in_o desire_n and_o propension_n though_o it_o be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v the_o good_a that_o it_o will_v but_o there_o be_v also_o inequality_n which_o arise_v from_o falseness_n of_o heart_n from_o falseness_n of_o heart_n heart_n as_o when_o a_o man_n have_v a_o ague_n which_o infect_v his_o humour_n or_o spirit_n or_o both_o he_o have_v one_o good_a day_n and_o another_o bad_a day_n or_o as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o land-flood_n this_o hour_n post_v in_o with_o such_o a_o high_a speed_n as_o if_o it_o will_v domineer_v over_o all_o the_o county_n and_o yet_o by_o and_o by_o it_o spend_v away_o itself_o there_o be_v no_o more_o of_o it_o to_o be_v see_v so_o it_o may_v be_v with_o a_o man_n who_o heart_n be_v false_a to_o god_n it_o may_v be_v with_o he_o thus_o he_o may_v have_v his_o mood_n his_o start_n one_o while_o like_o those_o accompany_v christ_n and_o magnify_v he_o with_o a_o hosanna_n in_o the_o high_a another_o while_n quite_o turn_v and_o cry_v out_o crucisie_n crucify_v he_o so_o here_o one_o day_n or_o week_n who_o but_o god_n and_o what_o but_o duty_n not_o a_o sermon_n miss_v not_o a_o prayer_n neglect_v yet_o on_o a_o sudden_a slow_a to_o hear_v careless_a to_o pray_v indifferent_a to_o any_o holy_a performance_n heart_n when_o inequality_n arise_v from_o falseness_n of_o heart_n now_o if_o the_o inequality_n arise_v from_o the_o falseness_n of_o heart_n and_o i_o pray_v you_o to_o observe_v this_o that_o it_o be_v ordinary_o in_o three_o case_n 1._o when_o the_o performance_n be_v attempt_v mere_o to_o compass_v some_o outward_a good_a a_o very_a hypocrite_n may_v take_v much_o pain_n for_o his_o own_o end_n of_o honour_n profit_n pleasure_n etc._n etc._n 2._o when_o the_o performance_n be_v attempt_v mere_o to_o remove_v some_o inward_a or_o outward_a evil_n as_o pang_n of_o conscience_n within_o or_o shame_n and_o censure_n without_o 3._o when_o the_o old_a lust_n be_v return_v to_o new_a strength_n the_o bitterness_n of_o death_n be_v off_o or_o the_o like_a and_o now_o the_o heart_n return_v to_o its_o former_a haunt_n and_o natural_a bent_n to_o the_o love_n and_o practice_v of_o such_o or_o such_o a_o sin_n which_o will_v easy_o beget_v and_o declare_v a_o inequality_n duty_n there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o inequality_n about_o holy_a duty_n in_o duty_n for_o love_n and_o practice_v of_o sin_n will_v either_o make_v all_o duty_n to_o cease_v or_o any_o method_n of_o duty_n to_o stagger_v and_o change_v 2._o observe_v that_o there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o inequality_n about_o holy_a service_n some_o respect_n the_o will_n and_o actum_fw-la elicitum_fw-la as_o the_o schoolman_n speak_v the_o first_o springing_n of_o it_o its_o secret_a inclining_n and_o motion_n other_o respect_v the_o exercise_n or_o fact_n and_o actum_fw-la imperatum_fw-la as_o they_o call_v it_o from_o these_o i_o infer_v two_o conclusion_n viz._n 1._o that_o inequality_n of_o holy_a service_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o exercise_n or_o fact_n may_v consist_v with_o uprightness_n v._o g._n a_o man_n one_o day_n may_v uprightness_n the_o inequality_n of_o holy_a service_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o exercise_n may_v consist_v with_o uprightness_n be_v able_a to_o find_v word_n more_o ready_o and_o abundant_o in_o prayer_n and_o livelihood_n in_o his_o affection_n then_o at_o another_o time_n and_o yet_o be_v true_o upright_a look_v as_o a_o preacher_n may_v be_v able_a to_o study_v and_o to_o preach_v one_o day_n better_o than_o another_o and_o a_o tradseman_n to_o follow_v his_o particular_a call_v yet_o both_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o be_v true_o upright_a in_o their_o particular_a call_v so_o i_o say_v of_o the_o express_v and_o external_a act_n which_o respect_v the_o course_n of_o our_o general_a calling_n &c_n &c_n 2._o that_o intrinsical_a inequality_n those_o in_o the_o will_n and_o purpose_n uprightness_n inequality_n in_o the_o will_n and_o purpose_n thereof_o argue_v defect_n of_o uprightness_n thereof_o argue_v defect_n of_o uprightness_n when_o a_o man_n will_n be_v one_o while_o strong_o purpose_v for_o duty_n and_o by_o and_o by_o it_o be_v total_o bend_v and_o set_v for_o sin_n here_o the_o inequality_n do_v depend_v upon_o the_o division_n of_o the_o heart_n which_o be_v hypocrisy_n and_o falseness_n 3._o cheerfulness_n or_o uncheerfulness_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n way_n cheerfulness_n or_o uncheerfulness_n in_o duty_n be_v not_o infallible_a symptom_n etiher_n way_n be_v not_o infallible_a symptom_n either_o way_n by_o cheerfulness_n i_o mean_v the_o liberty_n or_o freedom_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o by_o uncheerfulness_n the_o sadness_n heaviness_n or_o dulness_n of_o they_o as_o it_o may_v be_v a_o day_n though_o the_o sun_n shine_v not_o nay_o as_o the_o sun_n do_v keep_v on_o its_o natural_a course_n and_o motion_n under_o the_o
there_o be_v a_o twofold_a self-love_n one_o subordination_n wherein_o my_o aim_n be_v first_o and_o most_o to_o god_n glory_n to_o myself_o indeed_o there_o be_v a_o respect_n but_o not_o first_o of_o all_o not_o most_o of_o all_o not_o only_o to_o myself_o such_o a_o self-love_n in_o the_o discharge_n of_o duty_n be_v very_o lawful_a and_o the_o upright_o have_v it_o another_o of_o competition_n wherein_o i_o regard_v not_o the_o glory_n of_o competition_n of_o competition_n god_n i_o mind_v it_o not_o or_o else_o i_o respect_v myself_o more_o than_o it_o so_o that_o all_o may_v be_v hush_v up_o so_o that_o i_o may_v have_v joy_n and_o heaven_n and_o escape_v hell_n i_o care_v not_o for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n i_o will_v not_o do_v duty_n but_o to_o preserve_v myself_o such_o a_o self_n love_n as_o this_o be_v opposite_a to_o uprightness_n for_o though_o god_n give_v we_o leave_v to_o mind_n and_o respect_n ourselves_o yet_o he_o command_v we_o first_o and_o most_o to_o respect_n and_o aim_v at_o his_o glory_n vasn-glory_n doubt_n of_o uprightness_n from_o self-applause_n or_o vasn-glory_n whether_o all_o self-applause_n and_o vain_a glory_n be_v incompatible_a with_o uprightness_n sol._n i_o shall_v brief_o assoil_v this_o inquiry_n 1._o selfe-applause_n be_v the_o magnify_v of_o ourselves_o for_o duty_n be_v self-applause_n what_o it_o be_v happy_o perform_v it_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o adoration_n and_o admiration_n of_o ourselves_o by_o high_a opinion_n of_o ourselves_o or_o thought_n also_o that_o no_o other_o will_n high_o imagine_v of_o we_o and_o admire_v the_o eminency_n of_o our_o part_n and_o gift_n and_o quick_a ability_n and_o enlarge_v affection_n now_o this_o i_o say_v that_o though_o a_o man_n may_v be_v lawful_o enlarge_v with_o joy_n and_o thankfulness_n to_o god_n who_o have_v gracious_o assist_v and_o enlarge_v he_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n and_o his_o spirit_n thereupon_o may_v be_v the_o more_o clear_v yet_o self-applause_n be_v naught_o and_o opposite_a to_o uprightness_n it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o forgetfulness_n of_o our_o god_n and_o of_o his_o strength_n &_o of_o his_o grace_n by_o which_o we_o do_v his_o service_n it_o do_v not_o spring_n from_o humble_a uprightness_n but_o from_o a_o proud_a conceitedness_n and_o be_v the_o after-clap_a of_o satan_n and_o our_o sinful_a heart_n which_o kick_v down_o and_o undo_v that_o work_n which_o otherwise_o have_v be_v very_o well_o do_v 2._o again_o vain_a glory_n be_v the_o set_v forth_o of_o ourselves_o in_o duty_n be_v vain_a glory_n what_o it_o be_v it_o be_v the_o use_n of_o our_o master_n coin_n for_o the_o servant_n benefit_n when_o a_o man_n do_v hear_v or_o preach_v or_o pray_v or_o give_v alm_n only_o or_o principal_o to_o be_v see_v to_o be_v esteem_v to_o be_v speak_v of_o his_o own_o credit_n be_v the_o end_n of_o his_o work_n this_o be_v a_o manifest_a fruit_n of_o hypocrisy_n christ_n have_v a_o subsequent_a hypocrisy_n which_o follow_v the_o work_n vainglory_n be_v a_o antecedent_n hypocrisy_n glory_n distinguish_v of_o self-applause_n and_o vain_a glory_n which_o move_v we_o to_o the_o work_n 3._o nevertheless_o you_o must_v distinguish_v of_o self-applause_n and_o vainglory_n that_o they_o be_v either_o 1._o naked_a act_n or_o motion_n 2._o habitual_a quality_n or_o disposition_n even_o the_o most_o upright_a person_n may_v find_v they_o in_o respect_n of_o motion_n but_o the_o hypocrite_n have_v they_o in_o respect_n of_o disposition_n in_o the_o one_o they_o arise_v up_o as_o temptation_n for_o it_o be_v a_o most_o difficult_a thing_n total_o to_o be_v rid_v of_o ourselves_o either_o before_o or_o in_o or_o after_o duty_n in_o the_o other_o they_o rise_v up_o as_o natural_a affection_n the_o one_o feed_v on_o they_o as_o on_o meat_n the_o other_o be_v trouble_v with_o they_o as_o with_o poison_n they_o break_v the_o heart_n of_o the_o one_o with_o pride_n of_o the_o other_o with_o sorrow_n and_o humble_v in_o the_o one_o they_o be_v approbation_n in_o the_o the_o other_o they_o be_v vexation_n in_o a_o hypocrite_n they_o be_v like_o the_o wind_n which_o fill_v the_o sail_n in_o a_o upright_a person_n they_o be_v like_o the_o wind_n which_o trouble_v the_o stomach_n the_o duty_n do_v by_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v like_o glass_n make_v and_o blow_v up_o only_o by_o breath_n the_o applause_n of_o man_n breathe_v strong_o upon_o his_o affection_n to_o set_v out_o his_o service_n but_o it_o be_v with_o a_o uptight_a person_n in_o this_o case_n as_o with_o a_o leaf_n on_o a_o tree_n a_o little_a breathe_n of_o the_o air_n make_v it_o to_o tremble_v a_o upright_a person_n be_v afraid_a of_o his_o own_o high_a opinion_n or_o the_o commendation_n of_o other_o he_o can_v be_v high_o glad_a when_o the_o honour_n be_v cast_v on_o god_n and_o if_o any_o after-rising_n begin_v to_o grow_v for_o former_a duty_n he_o be_v not_o well_o till_o he_o have_v cast_v they_o down_o by_o after-humblings_a the_o upright_a person_n be_v much_o with_o god_n before_o duty_n and_o all_o for_o god_n after_o it_o he_o take_v all_o the_o strength_n of_o action_n out_o of_o god_n hand_n and_o therefore_o will_v not_o finger_v the_o least_o scruple_n of_o praise_n he_o look_v on_o inward_a applause_n as_o a_o cross_n and_o on_o public_a as_o a_o danger_n in_o the_o one_o i_o hate_v myself_o in_o the_o other_o i_o fear_v myself_o object_n it_o be_v lawful_a i_o confess_v to_o know_v what_o god_n have_v give_v we_o and_o to_o acknowledge_v the_o good_a which_o he_o have_v do_v in_o we_o or_o by_o we_o how_o else_o can_v we_o be_v thankful_a sol._n but_o then_o it_o be_v necessary_a to_o make_v he_o the_o end_n who_o we_o acknowledge_v to_o be_v the_o cause_n to_o give_v unto_o god_n the_o glory_n who_o have_v give_v to_o we_o the_o strength_n no_o more_o to_o this_o case_n but_o this_o beg_v for_o much_o grace_n to_o do_v duty_n and_o when_o you_o have_v do_v it_o beg_v for_o much_o strength_n to_o give_v god_n the_o glory_n of_o it_o a_o hypocrite_n be_v make_v up_o of_o himself_o and_o man_n but_o the_o upright_a person_n be_v make_v only_o by_o god_n and_o for_o he_o sect_n v._o a_o three_o use_n of_o the_o doctrine_n shall_v be_v to_o stir_v we_o up_o to_o get_v use_n 3_o uprightness_n and_o to_o keep_v it_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n which_o it_o labour_v to_o get_v uprightness_n and_o keep_v it_o here_o offer_v themselves_o viz._n 1._o motive_n to_o persuade_v we_o 2._o mean_v to_o direct_v and_o help_v we_o 1._o for_o the_o first_o of_o these_o what_o shall_v i_o say_v how_o shall_v i_o persuade_v if_o all_o the_o argument_n of_o heaven_n or_o earth_n may_v be_v available_a i_o have_v they_o at_o hand_n to_o present_v they_o unto_o you_o to_o motive_n motive_n excite_v your_o heart_n to_o this_o labour_n if_o there_o be_v any_o regard_n of_o a_o god_n of_o a_o christ_n of_o your_o soul_n of_o your_o comfort_n here_o of_o your_o happiness_n hereafter_o then_o think_v of_o uprightness_n content_v not_o yourselves_o till_o you_o have_v it_o why_o 1._o god_n regard_v you_o not_o if_o you_o be_v not_o the_o power_n thereof_o though_o you_o make_v many_o prayer_n though_o long_a prayer_n though_o you_o give_v much_o alm_n yet_o if_o your_o heart_n be_v not_o upright_o in_o these_o the_o word_n will_v condemn_v you_o for_o hypocrite_n and_o will_v give_v you_o your_o portion_n with_o they_o who_o shall_v have_v the_o great_a damnation_n your_o conscience_n will_v secret_o reproach_v and_o
