true_o so_o be_v the_o case_n here_o between_o we_o &_o the_o lord_n jesus_n so_o long_o as_o he_o find_v that_o we_o come_v to_o he_o and_o seek_v and_o pray_v and_o wrestle_v and_o what_o will_v we_o have_v oh_o pardon_v of_o sin_n and_o peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o power_n of_o grace_n to_o be_v but_o as_o other_o christian_n be_v that_o we_o can_v pray_v and_o believe_v as_o they_o do_v and_o find_v such_o comfort_n as_o they_o have_v and_o this_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o the_o soul_n be_v chief_o set_v upon_o now_o all_o this_o while_n that_o we_o come_v thus_o to_o christ_n we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o christ_n be_v to_o blame_v if_o he_o tarry_v a_o little_a long_o than_o we_o expect_v for_o we_o may_v seek_v he_o and_o not_o find_v he_o because_o we_o seek_v not_o so_o much_o he_o as_o his_o benefit_n and_o the_o rich_a treasure_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n and_o peace_n that_o be_v lay_v up_o in_o he_o without_o measure_n the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n do_v not_o love_v their_o soul_n nor_o the_o lord_n jesus_n so_o well_o as_o to_o love_v he_o for_o his_o grace_n and_o goodness_n sake_n but_o yet_o among_o better_a man_n there_o be_v a_o world_n of_o self_n love_n many_o a_o man_n will_v have_v his_o sin_n pardon_v because_o he_o will_v have_v his_o conscience_n at_o quiet_a we_o may_v thank_v ourselves_o for_o such_o affection_n as_o these_o not_o but_o that_o such_o affection_n may_v spring_v from_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n for_o man_n by_o nature_n never_o dream_v of_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o be_v but_o yet_o though_o such_o affection_n may_v spring_v from_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n yet_o you_o shall_v ever_o find_v such_o soul_n to_o detain_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o unrighteousness_n and_o out_o of_o self_n love_n use_v they_o all_o to_o their_o own_o end_n and_o look_v not_o that_o god_n may_v be_v glorify_v in_o and_o by_o they_o nor_o that_o his_o will_v be_v do_v but_o oh_o that_o the_o soul_n may_v have_v peace_n and_o that_o sin_n may_v be_v pardon_v and_o there_o it_o rest_v when_o our_o desire_n be_v chief_o set_v upon_o spiritual_a gift_n if_o we_o lose_v much_o comfort_n and_o fellowship_n with_o christ_n that_o else_o we_o may_v have_v have_v we_o must_v not_o marvel_n at_o it_o for_o our_o desire_n be_v set_v not_o chief_o upon_o christ_n but_o upon_o the_o thing_n of_o christ_n our_o desire_n be_v not_o after_o the_o person_n but_o after_o the_o good_n and_o benefit_n of_o christ_n observe_v the_o apostle_n expression_n rom._n 8.32_o he_o have_v give_v we_o his_o own_o son_n he_o do_v not_o say_v he_o that_o have_v give_v we_o peace_n and_o pardon_n of_o sin_n will_v not_o he_o give_v all_o other_o thing_n also_o or_o will_v not_o he_o give_v we_o christ_n he_o reason_v not_o from_o christ_n benefit_n to_o christ_n but_o thus_o he_o reason_n he_o that_o have_v give_v we_o his_o own_o son_n will_v with_o his_o son_n and_o after_o his_o son_n give_v we_o all_o other_o thing_n at_o the_o second_o hand_n come_v in_o all_o these_o benefit_n of_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o strength_n of_o grace_n and_o power_n against_o our_o lust_n etc._n etc._n these_o thing_n come_v in_o as_o attendant_n upon_o the_o former_a and_o therefore_o if_o god_n give_v we_o first_o to_o look_v at_o christ_n that_o in_o he_o we_o have_v life_n of_o justification_n and_o sanctification_n and_o consolation_n eternal_a glory_n peace_n and_o grace_n and_o all_o then_o we_o have_v he_o and_o life_n in_o he_o else_o we_o may_v have_v the_o outward_a comfort_n but_o stand_v long_o enough_o at_o christ_n bedchamber_n door_n before_o he_o let_v we_o in_o let_v it_o therefore_o be_v a_o word_n of_o direction_n and_o exhortation_n to_o every_o soul_n that_o desire_v to_o have_v that_o direction_n in_o a_o christian_a course_n there_o be_v a_o threefold_a spirit_n of_o a_o son_n spirit_n a_o threefold_a spirit_n dispense_n himself_o three_o way_n and_o bestow_v a_o threefold_a gift_n upon_o we_o which_o give_v we_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n to_o be_v we_o and_o we_o to_o he_o to_o be_v he_o first_o a_o spirit_n that_o do_v knit_v we_o to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o he_o to_o we_o second_o a_o spirit_n of_o liberty_n three_o a_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n these_o three_o the_o holy_a ghost_n take_v special_a notice_n of_o in_o this_o case_n first_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n wheresoever_o it_o be_v shed_v abroad_o in_o any_o member_n of_o christ_n it_o do_v make_v we_o one_o with_o the_o lord_n jesus_n it_o unite_v we_o into_o one_o fellowship_n of_o thus_o you_o have_v see_v six_o combination_n several_o of_o the_o gracious_a affection_n that_o be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v in_o nature_n no_o not_o set_v upon_o civil_a object_n much_o less_o upon_o spiritual_a but_o upon_o civil_a object_n they_o can_v be_v so_o combine_v together_o seven_o grace_n the_o seven_o combination_n of_o grace_n there_o be_v another_o combination_n of_o virtue_n strange_o mix_v in_o every_o lively_a holy_a christian_n and_o that_o be_v diligence_n in_o worldly_a business_n and_o yet_o deadness_n to_o the_o world_n such_o a_o mystery_n as_o none_o can_v read_v but_o they_o that_o know_v it_o for_o a_o man_n to_o rise_v early_o and_o go_v to_o bed_v late_o and_o eat_v the_o bread_n of_o carefullnesse_n not_o a_o sinful_a but_o a_o provident_a care_n world_n diligence_n in_o worldly_a business_n and_o yet_o dead_a to_o the_o world_n and_o to_o avoid_v idleness_n can_v endure_v to_o spend_v any_o idle_a time_n take_v all_o opportunity_n to_o be_v do_v something_o early_a and_o late_o and_o lose_v no_o opportunity_n go_v any_o way_n and_o bestir_v himself_o for_o profit_n this_o will_v he_o do_v most_o diligent_o in_o his_o call_n and_o yet_o be_v a_o man_n deadhearted_n to_o the_o world_n the_o diligent_a hand_n make_v rich_a prov._n 10.4_o and_o you_o read_v of_o the_o godly_a woman_n that_o she_o rise_v while_o it_o be_v yet_o night_n prov._n 31.27_o and_o of_o this_o you_o read_v prov._n 15.13_o and_o 18_o 19.27_o now_o if_o this_o be_v a_o thing_n which_o be_v so_o common_a in_o the_o mouth_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o you_o see_v be_v the_o practice_n of_o the_o great_a woman_n then_o upon_o the_o earth_n the_o great_a prince_n in_o those_o time_n the_o more_o gracious_a the_o more_o diligent_a and_o laborious_a in_o their_o calling_n you_o see_v it_o will_v well_o stand_v with_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n very_o diligent_a in_o worldly_a business_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o very_a same_o soul_n that_o be_v most_o full_o of_o the_o world_n business_n the_o more_o diligent_a they_o be_v in_o their_o calling_n yet_o the_o same_o person_n be_v direct_v to_o be_v dead_a with_o christ_n col._n 3.1_o 2_o cold_a frostinesse_n that_o be_v in_o our_o soul_n whereas_o before_o a_o man_n be_v cold_a towards_o his_o enemy_n his_o heart_n now_o begin_v to_o reflect_v upon_o he_o in_o pity_n and_o compassion_n and_o instead_o of_o hardness_n his_o heart_n now_o melt_v and_o be_v make_v soft_a within_o he_o to_o see_v what_o ill_a measure_n it_o can_v have_v put_v upon_o its_o enemy_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a side_n the_o same_o hatred_n in_o a_o man_n that_o be_v towards_o his_o enemy_n it_o make_v a_o man_n of_o a_o hot_a
distemper_n with_o boil_v in_o heat_n of_o wrath_n against_o his_o enemy_n he_o be_v all_o upon_o it_o to_o do_v he_o any_o harm_n his_o heart_n be_v full_a of_o hot_a and_o bitter_a wrath_n so_o as_o that_o love_n which_o be_v as_o heat_n and_o fire_n to_o thaw_v and_o warm_v cold_a and_o hard_a heart_n when_o it_o come_v to_o the_o fire_n of_o wrath_n it_o be_v as_o it_o be_v cold_a water_n and_o allay_v that_o heat_n and_o bitterness_n and_o harshness_n which_o else_o our_o heart_n be_v subject_a to_o this_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o love_n as_o it_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o water_n to_o the_o act_n it_o put_v forth_o a_o kind_n of_o variety_n of_o work_n whereby_o one_o will_v think_v it_o do_v cross_v itself_o but_o it_o do_v not_o but_o do_v all_o by_o the_o life_n of_o christ_n thus_o you_o see_v what_o the_o effect_n of_o the_o life_n of_o sanctification_n be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n after_o that_o god_n have_v begin_v to_o root_v the_o life_n of_o justification_n in_o we_o and_o he_o discern_v that_o god_n have_v wrought_v a_o change_n in_o he_o and_o then_o these_o several_a grace_n though_o in_o themselves_o and_o work_v one_o opposite_a to_o another_o yet_o in_o a_o christian_a heart_n they_o can_v meet_v and_o join_v together_o and_o therefore_o now_o do_v but_o lay_v this_o to_o heart_n he_o that_o have_v the_o son_n have_v life_n never_o know_v that_o the_o joy_n of_o a_o live_a christian_n do_v so_o soon_o vanish_v and_o depart_v away_o but_o that_o when_o it_o do_v most_o abound_v in_o the_o heart_n it_o do_v cause_n inward_a mourning_n and_o if_o not_o weep_v yet_o a_o affection_n of_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n of_o soul_n that_o ever_o we_o have_v so_o displease_v god_n the_o more_o god_n have_v be_v merciful_a to_o we_o the_o more_o be_v we_o shame_v of_o ourselves_o &_o inward_o grieve_v for_o our_o shameless_a carriage_n if_o therefore_o you_o only_o find_v joy_n in_o hear_v that_o may_v deceive_v you_o it_o be_v not_o the_o shortness_n of_o the_o continuance_n that_o argue_v the_o unsoundnesse_n of_o the_o joy_n but_o the_o want_n of_o this_o combination_n that_o will_v argue_v the_o falsehood_n of_o it_o if_o god_n yoke_n not_o spiritual_a joy_n with_o spiritual_a mourning_n then_o suspect_v your_o joy_n for_o it_o do_v not_o accompany_v salvation_n unto_o life_n and_o in_o very_a deed_n this_o you_o shall_v find_v to_o be_v true_a the_o joy_n of_o live_a soul_n in_o christ_n though_o that_o oftentimes_o be_v soon_o go_v yet_o it_o leave_v this_o spirit_n of_o mourning_n which_o keep_v possession_n for_o it_o and_o that_o many_o time_n for_o a_o long_a time_n and_o you_o may_v read_v your_o comfort_n in_o the_o sorrow_n that_o it_o have_v leave_v behind_o for_o there_o be_v as_o much_o cause_n of_o comfort_n in_o this_o sorrow_n as_o in_o the_o joy_n when_o you_o have_v it_o when_o you_o see_v your_o soul_n can_v mourn_v unfeigned_o for_o that_o you_o see_v so_o good_a a_o god_n to_o such_o a_o wretch_n this_o very_a comfortable_a sorrow_n that_o be_v leave_v in_o thy_o heart_n be_v a_o undoubted_a pledge_n that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o vanish_v joy_n the_o power_n and_o work_v of_o it_o last_v long_o and_o will_v abide_v in_o the_o soul_n for_o ever_o a_o man_n will_v in_o such_o a_o case_n mourn_v for_o his_o sin_n while_o he_o live_v if_o you_o have_v therefore_o find_v your_o joy_n mix_v with_o sorrow_n it_o be_v right_a else_o it_o be_v but_o a_o fade_a hypocritical_a and_o false_a joy_n again_o further_o how_o do_v you_o find_v your_o heart_n affect_v with_o the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n do_v you_o come_v to_o duty_n marvellous_a unwilling_o that_o if_o you_o can_v avoid_v it_o you_o will_v not_o keep_v such_o duty_n in_o your_o house_n and_o if_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v you_o put_v it_o upon_o any_o body_n rather_o than_o upon_o yourself_o you_o may_v be_v a_o live_a christian_n but_o your_o heart_n be_v in_o a_o dead_a frame_n at_o that_o time_n and_o if_o it_o be_v always_o so_o with_o you_o you_o never_o do_v true_o live_v but_o if_o you_o find_v your_o spirit_n at_o least_o your_o heart_n come_v on_o most_o willing_o to_o christian_a duty_n that_o you_o perform_v they_o like_o freewill_n offering_n not_o free_a so_o as_o without_o warrant_n from_o god_n word_n but_o free_a in_o respect_n of_o grace_n do_v but_o observe_v thus_o much_o it_o may_v be_v you_o may_v come_v off_o free_o before_o god_n because_o he_o have_v give_v you_o spiritual_a gift_n and_o you_o can_v quit_v yourselves_o well_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o they_o and_o that_o make_v you_o come_v the_o more_o bold_o but_o consider_v if_o the_o more_o willing_o you_o come_v to_o christian_a duty_n the_o more_o tremble_a sight_n of_o god_n if_o a_o man_n can_v serve_v the_o lord_n with_o joy_n and_o tremble_v together_o than_o the_o service_n you_o perform_v to_o god_n be_v heavenly_a and_o spiritual_a and_o lively_a and_o such_o as_o in_o which_o you_o live_v they_o come_v from_o a_o live_a heart_n and_o the_o sacrifice_n be_v lively_a and_o acceptable_a and_o argue_v you_o have_v life_n and_o therein_o you_o have_v christ_n the_o god_n of_o peace_n but_o if_o a_o man_n have_v only_o fear_v in_o a_o duty_n but_o no_o joy_n or_o joy_n but_o no_o fear_n his_o heart_n be_v not_o in_o a_o good_a frame_n we_o must_v bring_v a_o better_a frame_n of_o heart_n before_o god_n then_o so_o before_o we_o can_v say_v that_o we_o have_v the_o life_n of_o sanctification_n again_o for_o another_o sign_n how_o do_v you_o find_v yourselves_o in_o your_o tribulation_n be_v they_o altogether_o matter_n of_o burden_n and_o weariness_n to_o your_o heart_n have_v you_o no_o
about_o such_o duty_n mere_o for_o themselves_o they_o be_v want_v of_o this_o spiritual_a life_n so_o then_o do_v but_o lay_v these_o thing_n together_o do_v you_o find_v a_o man_n that_o be_v desirous_a to_o be_v do_v good_a duty_n but_o be_v it_o to_o please_v other_o or_o be_v it_o out_o of_o the_o bond_n of_o authority_n that_o lie_v upon_o he_o do_v you_o see_v they_o have_v affection_n to_o duty_n but_o out_o of_o their_o place_n and_o calling_n or_o in_o their_o call_n they_o do_v such_o duty_n but_o rather_o out_o of_o their_o own_o strength_n then_o from_o the_o strength_n of_o christ_n and_o not_o out_o of_o a_o conscionable_a respect_n to_o all_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n or_o if_o it_o be_v from_o outward_a principle_n and_o to_o wrong_v end_n the_o glory_n of_o god_n not_o seek_v after_o nor_o tend_v to_o the_o build_n up_o themselves_o nor_o other_o in_o grace_n all_o these_o be_v such_o as_o man_n may_v be_v carry_v to_o do_v from_o outward_a respect_n they_o may_v do_v something_o that_o one_o will_v think_v will_v argue_v life_n but_o all_o the_o duty_n they_o do_v by_o their_o own_o strength_n be_v like_o a_o spider_n that_o weave_v a_o web_n out_o of_o her_o own_o bowel_n we_o follow_v not_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o word_n exact_o but_o be_v ever_o wheel_v about_o to_o our_o own_o end_n and_o to_o those_o respect_n that_o concern_v ourselves_o rather_o then_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o the_o church_n good_a it_o be_v true_a no_o man_n that_o have_v common_a grace_n man_n that_o have_v gift_n of_o preach_v and_o gift_n of_o pray_v may_v love_v to_o act_v and_o move_v they_o or_o any_o other_o zealous_a gift_n but_o yet_o notwithstanding_o you_o shall_v find_v this_o to_o be_v true_a that_o till_o the_o heart_n be_v sanctify_v by_o the_o life_n of_o christ_n we_o ever_o detain_v all_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o unrighteousness_n as_o the_o roman_n and_o gentile_n do_v detain_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n in_o unrighteousness_n rom._n 1.18_o so_o we_o by_o a_o spirit_n of_o ypocrisie_n detain_v all_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o unrighteousness_n and_o in_o hypocrisy_n whereas_o god_n have_v give_v we_o every_o grace_n and_o the_o manifestation_n thereof_o to_o edify_v himself_o and_o to_o glorify_v god_n withal_o we_o wonderful_o magnify_v ourselves_o withal_o and_o make_v ourselves_o goodly_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o man_n we_o be_v full_a of_o ourselves_o and_o think_v we_o have_v this_o and_o that_o in_o we_o that_o will_v serve_v our_o turn_n and_o reach_v our_o own_o end_n this_o be_v not_o a_o life_n of_o grace_n but_o be_v indeed_o a_o dead_a work_n all_o that_o we_o do_v and_o therefore_o rest_v not_o in_o any_o such_o kind_n of_o life_n and_o motion_n but_o if_o you_o find_v a_o inward_a inclination_n of_o soul_n to_o spiritual_a duty_n and_o to_o those_o duty_n in_o special_a that_o be_v pertinent_a to_o your_o place_n and_o if_o they_o be_v not_o within_o the_o compass_n of_o your_o call_n you_o dare_v not_o reach_v unto_o they_o and_o in_o your_o call_n you_o do_v they_o not_o out_o of_o desire_n to_o be_v see_v of_o man_n but_o you_o be_v do_v good_a duty_n out_o of_o a_o sense_n of_o your_o own_o inability_n to_o reach_v any_o duty_n in_o your_o call_n much_o less_o of_o god_n service_n and_o in_o they_o all_o you_o observe_v every_o commandment_n of_o god_n and_o the_o end_v you_o aim_v at_o be_v single_o that_o god_n may_v be_v glorify_v and_o that_o god_n may_v see_v you_o and_o not_o man_n that_o good_a may_v be_v do_v by_o you_o in_o your_o place_n in_o church_n and_o family_n and_o commonwealth_n and_o that_o thereby_o other_o may_v be_v bring_v on_o to_o god_n and_o his_o kingdom_n increase_v this_o very_a motion_n and_o inclination_n of_o of_o a_o coath_a come_v upon_o a_o christian_n that_o so_o benumb_v his_o spirit_n that_o he_o perform_v no_o duty_n at_o all_o but_o if_o he_o may_v have_v his_o own_o mind_n he_o will_v not_o pray_v
