lay_v they_o up_o as_o in_o a_o treasury_n and_o the_o seat_n of_o this_o be_v in_o the_o hindermost_a part_n of_o the_o brain_n and_o in_o this_o most_o admirable_a be_v the_o wisdom_n and_o power_n of_o god_n that_o certain_a image_n of_o thing_n long_o since_o see_v or_o hear_v shall_v be_v lay_v up_o in_o a_o corner_n of_o the_o brain_n and_o there_o preserve_v many_o year_n and_o call_v to_o their_o youth_n and_o consecrate_v the_o first_o fruit_n of_o their_o time_n unto_o god_n be_v exceed_o please_a and_o acceptable_a unto_o he_o 4._o when_o the_o sun_n set_v at_o night_n and_o leave_v we_o in_o the_o dark_a we_o doubt_v not_o but_o that_o he_o will_v return_v again_o so_o when_o christ_n seem_v to_o withdraw_v himself_o from_o a_o faithful_a soul_n on_o which_o he_o have_v cast_v the_o sweet_a beam_n of_o comfort_n and_o refreshment_n let_v such_o a_o one_o know_v for_o his_o comfort_n that_o he_o will_v rise_v again_o this_o night_n will_v not_o always_o last_o though_o it_o be_v a_o long_a winter_n night_n a_o tedious_a time_n of_o desertion_n yet_o a_o dawn_n yea_o a_o perfect_a day_n will_v follow_v it_o when_o the_o face_n of_o christ_n shall_v shine_v again_o upon_o it_o again_o as_o the_o sun_n never_o so_o set_v as_o not_o to_o shine_v at_o all_o but_o when_o it_o set_v to_o one_o part_n of_o the_o world_n it_o arise_v to_o another_o so_o christ_n never_o withdraw_v his_o light_n from_o the_o whole_a world_n but_o although_o he_o remove_v from_o one_o nation_n yet_o he_o shine_v upon_o another_o he_o have_v a_o church_n in_o all_o age_n 5._o again_o as_o among_o those_o fruit_n which_o grow_v in_o the_o earth_n such_o as_o grow_v most_o towards_o the_o sun_n be_v sweet_a such_o as_o be_v most_o in_o the_o shade_n be_v sour_a so_o among_o those_o christian_n which_o be_v unite_v unto_o christ_n those_o who_o have_v more_o free_a and_o constant_a communion_n with_o he_o partake_v most_o of_o his_o spirit_n keep_v more_o close_a to_o he_o than_o other_o they_o bring_v forth_o most_o sweet_a and_o savoury_a fruit_n of_o obedience_n their_o service_n have_v a_o more_o please_a and_o heavenly_a relish_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o they_o than_o they_o who_o though_o they_o partake_v of_o some_o life_n and_o warmth_n from_o christ_n yet_o have_v it_o in_o aless_n degree_n and_o be_v less_o careful_a to_o remove_v such_o thing_n out_o of_o the_o sun_n as_o hide_v the_o face_n of_o christ_n from_o they_o therefore_o this_o shall_v move_v we_o to_o draw_v near_o unto_o he_o to_o dwell_v wiâ—h_v he_o to_o walk_v iâ—_n the_o light_n of_o his_o countenance_n than_o shall_v we_o esteem_v his_o love_n to_o be_v better_a than_o life_n so_o shall_v we_o delight_v more_o in_o he_o and_o both_o we_o and_o our_o service_n will_v be_v more_o please_v to_o he_o ephesus_z be_v charge_v with_o the_o decay_n of_o first-love_n sure_o this_o decay_n of_o heat_n have_v never_o be_v but_o that_o she_o have_v withdraw_v herself_o from_o the_o hâ—m_n that_o we_o may_v receive_v heat_n from_o he_o and_o let_v we_o be_v more_o watchful_a that_o we_o step_v not_o aside_o from_o he_o in_o time_n to_o come_v 6._o as_o the_o sun_n be_v able_a more_o effectual_o to_o thaw_v and_o melt_v the_o freeze_a ice_n than_o many_o thousand_o man_n with_o axe_n and_o bettle_n so_o the_o presence_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o love_n manifest_v to_o the_o soul_n and_o shed_v into_o it_o be_v more_o effectual_a in_o melt_v a_o hard_a freeze_a heart_n into_o sound_n godly_a sorrow_n than_o a_o thousand_o threat_n or_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o let_v not_o a_o afflict_a soul_n put_v back_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n tender_v unto_o it_o the_o offer_v of_o grace_n in_o christ-iâ—sus_a because_o it_o be_v not_o yet_o sufficient_o humble_v but_o so_o long_o as_o its_o conscience_n bear_v witness_v that_o it_o seek_v not_o mercy_n for_o a_o cloak_n of_o sin_n but_o for_o a_o motive_n to_o obedience_n let_v it_o with_o confidence_n apply_v the_o promise_n know_v that_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n shine_v upon_o the_o soul_n be_v of_o all_o other_o the_o most_o ready_a and_o the_o most_o excellent_a mean_n kind_o and_o sweet_o to_o melt_v and_o soften_v the_o heart_n and_o to_o conform_v it_o to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n this_o will_v make_v it_o yield_v and_o fit_v it_o to_o receive_v any_o stamp_n of_o grace_n that_o now_o it_o will_v be_v like_o wax_n before_o the_o fire_n that_o will_v be_v mould_v as_o it_o shall_v please_v the_o hand_n of_o god_n therefore_o do_v not_o stand_v back_o from_o christ_n because_o thou_o be_v sensible_a of_o too_o much_o hardeness_n in_o thy_o heart_n but_o rather_o come_v to_o he_o that_o this_o hardeness_n may_v be_v remove_v and_o thy_o heart_n may_v melt_v at_o his_o love_n 7._o let_v the_o glory_n and_o excellency_n of_o the_o sun_n make_v thou_o to_o admire_v the_o infinite_a glory_n and_o excellency_n of_o its_o maker_n if_o the_o sun_n can_v long_o be_v look_v on_o with_o a_o steady-eye_n oh_o then_o how_o do_v god_n dwell_v in_o that_o light_n which_o can_v be_v approach_v unto_o who_o can_v stand_v before_o he_o 〈◊〉_d angel_n may_v well_o hide_v their_o face_n at_o his_o presence_n where_o then_o shall_v man_n appear_v in_o the_o rag_n of_o his_o pollution_n oh_o learn_v to_o contemn_v all_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o earth_n in_o comparison_n of_o his_o infinite_a excellency_n who_o make_v the_o sun_n itself_o of_o nothing_o which_o be_v more_o worth_a than_o the_o whole_a earth_n and_o all_o its_o
be_v none_o of_o those_o that_o be_v bear_v up_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n above_o the_o earth_n consider_v how_o little_a content_v one_o of_o these_o creature_n and_o then_o learn_v to_o be_v ashamed_a that_o thy_o appetite_n be_v so_o much_o beyond_o thy_o necessity_n and_o practice_v mortification_n as_o far_o as_o we_o can_v guess_v the_o bird_n take_v more_o delight_n in_o fly_v and_o sing_v than_o they_o do_v in_o feed_v and_o therefore_o they_o have_v soon_o do_v with_o this_o so_o shall_v a_o christian_n be_v more_o delight_v in_o converse_v with_o god_n in_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n in_o run_v the_o way_n of_o his_o commandment_n than_o in_o serve_v the_o necessity_n of_o nature_n yea_o it_o shall_v be_v his_o meat_n and_o drink_n to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v a_o delight_n to_o the_o bird_n to_o sing_v and_o soar_v aloft_o again_o as_o the_o bird_n use_v not_o these_o thing_n so_o as_o to_o make_v her_o unfit_a to_o fly_v so_o a_o christian_a must_v not_o abuse_v meat_n and_o drink_n so_o as_o to_o clog_v and_o dull_v his_o spirit_n and_o make_v he_o more_o dull_a and_o dead_a in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n but_o so_o to_o refresh_v himself_o that_o he_o may_v be_v the_o more_o cheerful_a and_o lively_a in_o his_o heavenly_a flight_n 7._o as_o the_o bird_n not_o sow_v nor_o gather_v into_o barnes_n as_o our_o saviour_n tell_v we_o yet_o be_v feed_v by_o our_o heavenly_a father_n so_o shall_v a_o child_n of_o god_n depend_v upon_o his_o providence_n without_o distrustful_a ear_n against_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n though_o not_o without_o moderate_a and_o christian_n care_n which_o serve_v the_o providence_n of_o god_n 8._o as_o the_o bird_n have_v find_v somewhat_o to_o satisfy_v its_o hunger_n by_o its_o chirp_n call_v other_o to_o partake_v with_o it_o so_o shall_v christian_n cheerful_o invite_v other_o to_o partake_v with_o they_o of_o those_o thing_n that_o god_n have_v give_v they_o and_o not_o like_o the_o hog_n grunt_v and_o wrangle_v at_o any_o that_o feed_v near_o they_o 9_o as_o the_o bird_n do_v not_o so_o much_o as_o light_v upon_o the_o ground_n without_o the_o all-guiding_a providence_n of_o god_n mat._n 10._o so_o shall_v a_o christian_n learn_v to_o depend_v upon_o the_o providence_n and_o protection_n of_o god_n who_o be_v of_o far_o great_a price_n in_o the_o esteem_n of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n than_o many_o sparrow_n know_v certain_o that_o thy_o hair_n be_v number_v and_o that_o none_o of_o they_o can_v fall_v to_o the_o ground_n without_o thy_o heavenly_a father_n 10._o consider_v that_o as_o when_o the_o bird_n fly_v high_a it_o take_v least_o notice_n of_o earthly_a thing_n and_o be_v least_o move_v with_o they_o and_o affect_v towards_o they_o so_o when_o a_o christian_a be_v most_o raise_v in_o spiritual_a affection_n to_o the_o great_a height_n of_o heavenly-mindedness_a keep_v near_a heaven_n than_o be_v the_o earth_n far_o out_o of_o sight_n and_o he_o be_v least_o move_v with_o the_o thing_n here_o below_o and_o best_a able_a to_o contemn_v earthly_a vanity_n he_o be_v too_o far_o above_o these_o to_o be_v much_o affect_v towards_o they_o therefore_o this_o shall_v make_v we_o think_v of_o the_o exhortation_n of_o the_o apostle_n mind_v the_o thing_n which_o be_v above_o and_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o help_v ourselves_o against_o earthly_a affection_n and_o fleshly_a lust_n think_v with_o thyself_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o i_o be_o so_o earthly-minded_n that_o my_o affection_n be_v so_o engage_v to_o this_o or_o that_o in_o the_o world_n yet_o i_o can_v come_v off_o nor_o free_v myself_o that_o i_o can_v scarce_o persuade_v my_o own_o heart_n to_o be_v without_o these_o and_o these_o thing_n it_o be_v this_o because_o my_o heart_n be_v not_o carry_v aloft_o it_o draw_v too_o near_o the_o ground_n it_o withdraw_v too_o much_o from_o god_n if_o i_o shall_v keep_v up_o my_o heart_n close_o to_o god_n these_o thing_n will_v be_v out_o of_o sight_n the_o earth_n will_v seldom_o be_v in_o my_o thought_n at_o least_o not_o so_o as_o to_o work_v much_o upon_o my_o affection_n on_o the_o other_o side_n you_o see_v that_o those_o bird_n which_o use_v so_o much_o upon_o the_o ground_n they_o fly_v but_o soft_o as_o may_v be_v see_v by_o those_o that_o use_v about_o our_o house_n so_o also_o those_o christian_n that_o be_v much_o take_v up_o with_o the_o deal_n and_o business_n of_o the_o world_n they_o fly_v but_o soft_o have_v but_o slow_a affection_n and_o sluggish_a motion_n to_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n they_o go_v but_o cold_o about_o good_a duty_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v pray_v for_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o bear_v we_o upward_o 11._o consider_v also_o that_o as_o the_o bird_n can_v mount_v up_o into_o the_o air_n and_o yet_o light_a upon_o the_o earth_n too_o and_o receive_v some_o refreshment_n there_o whereas_o the_o beast_n can_v mount_v up_o and_o live_v in_o the_o air_n so_o a_o christian_a can_v and_o may_v partake_v of_o the_o natural_a comfort_n and_o refreshment_n of_o this_o life_n though_o in_o a_o moderate_a manner_n and_o measure_n as_o well_o as_o the_o natural_a man_n but_o the_o natural_a man_n can_v mount_v up_o to_o heaven_n can_v live_v in_o the_o air_n can_v live_v by_o the_o spirit_n he_o have_v no_o relish_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n the_o spiritual_a man_n judge_v all_o thing_n he_o can_v discern_v what_o be_v in_o nature_n but_o himself_o be_v judge_v of_o no_o man_n his_o excellency_n can_v be_v discern_v by_o the_o eye_n of_o nature_n 12._o again_o as_o the_o bird_n live_v in_o a_o stormy_a element_n and_o feel_v much_o alteration_n of_o weather_n heat_n cold_a wind_n etc._n etc._n as_o the_o air_n be_v the_o most_o unsettle_a of_o all_o other_o part_n of_o the_o creation_n so_o christian_n do_v live_v in_o a_o condition_n subject_a to_o manifold_a alteration_n subject_a to_o many_o storm_n of_o persecution_n and_o temptation_n and_o as_o the_o bird_n be_v then_o especial_o in_o danger_n by_o snare_n and_o gin_n when_o they_o be_v upon_o the_o earth_n to_o which_o they_o be_v not_o subject_a when_o they_o be_v aloft_o in_o the_o air_n so_o a_o christian_n be_v then_o in_o danger_n to_o be_v ensnare_v and_o entangle_v when_o he_o deal_v with_o earthly_a thing_n and_o be_v most_o affect_a to_o the_o thing_n below_o when_o he_o be_v most_o heavenly-minded_n then_o be_v he_o most_o out_o of_o danger_n of_o these_o snare_n 13._o the_o bird_n in_o the_o air_n meet_v with_o bird_n of_o prey_n there_o also_o which_o be_v ready_a to_o seize_v upon_o they_o and_o destroy_v they_o so_o the_o devil_n who_o be_v call_v the_o prince_n that_o rule_v in_o the_o air_n do_v especial_o choose_v to_o assault_v those_o that_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n even_o then_o when_o they_o be_v most_o spiritual_a endeavour_v to_o pull_v down_o those_o that_o be_v high_a in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n as_o david_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o special_a watchfulness_n must_v be_v use_v by_o such_o 14._o as_o the_o bird_n be_v of_o all_o other_o live_v creature_n the_o most_o cheerful_a as_o they_o be_v high_a above_o the_o earth_n and_o near_a heaven_n so_o shall_v a_o christian_a labour_n of_o all_o other_o man_n to_o be_v most_o cheerful_a &_o replenish_v with_o heavenly_a joy_n as_o he_o be_v near_a heaven_n and_o far_o from_o the_o earth_n than_o other_o god_n be_v infinite_a in_o all_o goodness_n and_o happiness_n and_o the_o near_a to_o god_n the_o more_o happy_a and_o the_o great_a cause_n of_o cheerfulness_n as_o the_o bird_n be_v most_o cheerful_a in_o a_o clear_a sun-shiny_a day_n so_o be_v a_o christian_n when_o the_o light_n of_o god_n countenance_n shine_v on_o he_o as_o the_o bird_n sing_v most_o cheerful_o after_o a_o sweet_a refresh_a shower_n so_o shall_v a_o christian_a go_v away_o most_o cheer_v from_o the_o word_n of_o god_n when_o it_o have_v distil_v upon_o he_o as_o the_o dew_n of_o heaven_n as_o the_o bird_n be_v merry_a in_o the_o spring_n so_o a_o christian_n be_v when_o there_o be_v a_o spring_n and_o increase_v of_o grace_n in_o his_o soul_n and_o a_o near_a approach_n of_o the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n and_o a_o special_a warmth_n of_o god_n love_n be_v shed_v abroad_o into_o his_o heart_n as_o the_o bird_n by_o chirp_a do_v set_v other_o on_o sing_v and_o many_o join_v together_o in_o consort_n so_o one_o christian_n shall_v draw_v another_o by_o example_n to_o yield_v up_o sweet_a song_n of_o praise_n to_o god_n and_o many_o shall_v join_v together_o with_o one_o spirit_n to_o glorify_v the_o lord_n as_o the_o bird_n sing_v although_o they_o know_v not_o where_o to_o have_v their_o next_o supply_n of_o
and_o breath_n and_o that_o upright_a posture_n of_o his_o body_n be_v a_o fit_a resemblance_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n that_o make_v it_o 2._o now_o without_o the_o body_n there_o be_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o the_o sweet_a and_o happy_a habitation_n which_o adam_n have_v in_o the_o garden_n of_o eden_n such_o as_o now_o no_o place_n with_o the_o great_a cost_n and_o art_n in_o the_o world_n can_v possible_o afford_v hereby_o resemble_v god_n who_o have_v the_o glorious_a heaven_n for_o his_o dwell_a place_n wherein_o he_o do_v especial_o manifest_v his_o divine_a and_o glorious_a presence_n 2._o his_o dominion_n over_o the_o earth_n ayr_n and_o water_n with_o all_o the_o creature_n in_o they_o whereby_o as_o a_o under-officer_n or_o deputy_n he_o do_v represent_v the_o person_n of_o god_n who_o be_v the_o supreme_a lord_n of_o all_o chap._n ix_o use_v 1_o learn_v here_o then_o to_o admire_v this_o wonderful_a work_n of_o god_n and_o to_o magnify_v he_o for_o that_o the_o one_o side_n oâ—_n the_o other_o 2._o learn_v here_o not_o to_o think_v god_n the_o author_n of_o any_o sinful_a disposition_n in_o thou_o remember_v how_o he_o make_v thou_o and_o condemn_v thyself_o justify_v his_o purity_n and_o holiness_n by_o who_o thou_o be_v make_v upright_a 3._o learn_v to_o lament_v thy_o own_o misery_n who_o be_v so_o far_o from_o that_o perfection_n which_o god_n give_v to_o man_n at_o the_o first_o look_v upon_o thy_o defect_n every_o way_n within_z and_o without_o and_o see_v the_o fruit_n of_o sin_n in_o thyself_o and_o give_v no_o rest_n to_o thyself_o till_o thou_o see_v thyself_o new-made_a again_o until_o thou_o be_v become_v a_o new_a creature_n and_o have_v the_o image_n of_o god_n restore_v unto_o thou_o so_o far_o as_o we_o come_v short_a of_o adam_n perfection_n so_o far_o we_o come_v short_a of_o that_o which_o we_o shall_v be_v of_o that_o which_o we_o must_v continual_o seek_v for_o but_o you_o will_v say_v all_o in_o the_o world_n come_v short_a of_o adam_n perfection_n true_a and_o therefore_o all_o must_v strive_v to_o grow_v in_o grace_n more_o and_o more_o and_o none_o must_v condemn_v another_o that_o go_v beyond_o himself_o but_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n in_o this_o case_n for_o some_o be_v not_o sensible_a of_o their_o fail_n at_o least_o not_o so_o as_o to_o be_v careful_a to_o reform_v they_o but_o rather_o dislike_v those_o that_o give_v they_o the_o best_a example_n and_o keep_v themselves_o most_o close_o to_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o word_n these_o have_v not_o the_o image_n of_o god_n at_o all_o restore_v to_o they_o they_o have_v no_o part_n of_o that_o spiritual_a life_n which_o adam_n have_v but_o other_o there_o be_v who_o the_o lord_n have_v new-molded_n and_o once_o again_o by_o his_o spirit_n have_v breathe_v into_o they_o the_o breath_n of_o spiritual_a life_n who_o see_v themselves_o to_o come_v short_a of_o that_o perfection_n which_o adam_n have_v and_o mourn_v and_o strive_v and_o pray_v and_o use_v all_o holy_a mean_n and_o help_v to_o this_o purpose_n who_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v show_v wherein_o they_o come_v short_a of_o this_o image_n of_o god_n in_o adam_n wherein_o they_o be_v unlike_a unto_o it_o willing_a to_o be_v reprove_v by_o the_o word_n these_o have_v some_o degree_n of_o his_o image_n renew_v in_o they_o and_o these_o strive_v after_o far_a perfection_n but_o now_o compare_v thyself_o with_o this_o image_n of_o god_n in_o adam_n before_o his_o fall_n and_o see_v what_o thou_o have_v to_o do_v how_o much_o be_v amiss_o in_o thou_o and_o must_v be_v amend_v when_o a_o man_n have_v lose_v a_o great_a estate_n and_o by_o some_o mean_n begin_v to_o recover_v again_o he_o will_v scarce_o think_v he_o have_v enough_o until_o he_o have_v get_v as_o much_o as_o he_o have_v before_o he_o will_v fain_o be_v as_o rich_a as_o ever_o he_o be_v man_n be_v too_o greedy_a of_o these_o thing_n but_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v so_o say_v i_o covet_v you_o the_o best_a thing_n thou_o be_v rich_a in_o adam_n our_o first_o parent_n have_v abundance_n of_o riches_n to_o leave_v we_o but_o he_o commit_v treason_n and_o so_o all_o be_v forfeit_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o lord_n now_o we_o shall_v never_o think_v ourselves_o well_o until_o we_o have_v recover_v the_o same_o degree_n of_o excellency_n which_o we_o lose_v thou_o that_o think_v thou_o know_v enough_o consider_v how_o far_o thou_o come_v short_a of_o adam_n who_o know_v the_o lord_n perfect_o but_o thou_o be_v ignorant_a of_o many_o thing_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o those_o thing_n which_o thou_o do_v know_v thou_o know_v it_o very_o imperfect_o how_o far_o be_v thou_o from_o that_o full_a purpose_n of_o heart_n in_o obey_v god_n and_o cleave_v to_o he_o that_o be_v in_o adam_n how_o far_o from_o that_o uprightness_n that_o perfection_n of_o holiness_n those_o heavenly_a affection_n that_o strong_a love_n to_o god_n that_o ravish_v constant_a joy_n in_o he_o which_o adam_n have_v how_o unsettle_a be_v thy_o affection_n how_o dead_a be_v thy_o heart_n how_o little_o be_v thou_o affect_v towards_o heavenly_a thing_n how_o far_o in_o love_n with_o the_o earth_n and_o earthly_a thing_n therefore_o think_v with_o thyself_o in_o these_o and_o these_o thing_n i_o be_o unlike_a to_o god_n i_o bear_v not_o his_o image_n i_o be_o contrary_a to_o his_o purity_n and_o so_o resolve_v upon_o present_a reformation_n and_o beware_v thou_o be_v not_o of_o the_o number_n of_o those_o who_o instead_o of_o the_o image_n
