and_o sometime_o also_o he_o may_v seem_v harsh_a and_o not_o accept_v of_o thy_o person_n but_o it_o be_v to_o try_v thy_o faith_n for_o notwithstanding_o he_o will_v hear_v thou_o and_o accept_v of_o thou_o in_o what_o thou_o desire_v according_a to_o his_o will_n for_o thy_o good_a that_o he_o may_v declare_v his_o transcendent_a love_n you_o know_v christ_n call_v the_o woman_n of_o canaan_n dog_n and_o seem_v to_o speak_v harsh_a to_o she_o and_o yet_o even_o all_o the_o while_n that_o he_o look_v as_o it_o be_v sour_o upon_o she_o and_o speak_v as_o it_o be_v sad_o against_o some_o measure_n concern_v his_o affection_n to_o the_o saint_n yet_o the_o gospel_n of_o all_o part_n of_o the_o bible_n do_v in_o a_o more_o ample_a clear_a and_o satisfactory_a way_n hold_v out_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n to_o believer_n that_o which_o all_o the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o he_o or_o of_o his_o love_n be_v so_o allegorical_a and_o so_o dark_o as_o that_o it_o be_v not_o easy_a at_o least_o for_o every_o one_o to_o observe_v the_o light_n of_o christ_n love_n so_o clear_o shine_v in_o they_o indeed_o the_o sun_n shine_v of_o christ_n love_n be_v in_o the_o firmament_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n but_o as_o it_o be_v there_o it_o be_v much_o cloud_v &_o much_o veil_v but_o in_o the_o firmament_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n it_o shine_v in_o its_o full_a brightness_n lustre_n and_o glory_n and_o therefore_o be_v most_o coversant_a in_o read_v of_o it_o and_o while_o you_o read_v the_o gospel_n be_v sure_a to_o carry_v this_o along_o with_o you_o that_o all_o that_o which_o you_o shall_v read_v there_o either_o there_o in_o the_o life_n or_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v still_o to_o be_v understand_v as_o a_o demonstration_n of_o his_o love_n to_o believer_n second_o if_o thou_o will_v know_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n be_v sure_a to_o labour_v to_o get_v into_o the_o bosom_n of_o christ_n that_o soul_n know_v little_a of_o christ_n love_n in_o the_o power_n and_o sweetness_n and_o spirituality_n thereof_o who_o know_v only_a christ_n in_o his_o head_n as_o be_v without_o he_o and_o be_v a_o stranger_n to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n in_o his_o heart_n as_o be_v in_o he_o labour_v therefore_o to_o have_v christ_n reveal_v in_o thou_o as_o paul_n speak_v of_o himself_o otherwise_o all_o that_o knowledge_n which_o thou_o have_v of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n will_v be_v to_o little_a or_o no_o purpose_n look_v as_o jesus_n christ_n do_v therefore_o know_v the_o father_n most_o because_o as_o the_o scripture_n say_v he_o lie_v in_o the_o father_n bosom_n in_o like_a manner_n do_v thou_o labour_v to_o be_v in_o the_o bosom_n of_o jesus_n christ_n that_o thou_o may_v the_o better_o know_v what_o be_v his_o love_n to_o believer_n three_o consul_n with_o believer_n ask_v those_o object_n of_o love_n concern_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n to_o they_o they_o that_o have_v have_v experience_n of_o his_o love_n can_v best_o inform_v thou_o i_o make_v no_o question_n but_o that_o a_o poor_a believer_n who_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n and_o in_o some_o measure_n experience_v the_o transcendent_a sweetness_n thereof_o be_v far_o better_a able_a to_o help_v thou_o in_o this_o great_a study_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n than_o the_o great_a scholar_n in_o the_o world_n be_v who_o it_o may_v be_v have_v read_v or_o hear_v something_o of_o his_o love_n but_o yet_o have_v no_o experience_n thereof_o in_o his_o soul_n four_o study_v thy_o own_o experience_n consider_v the_o carriage_n of_o christ_n particular_o towards_o thy_o soul_n remember_v how_o long_o he_o bear_v with_o thou_o whilst_o thou_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n i_o and_o a_o enemy_n unto_o he_o how_o long_o do_v he_o stand_v knock_v at_o the_o door_n ere_o thou_o do_v open_v how_o long_o do_v he_o come_v woo_v of_o thy_o soul_n ere_o thou_o do_v embrace_v he_o how_o many_o way_n do_v he_o take_v to_o work_v upon_o thou_o to_o open_v thy_o heart_n to_o let_v he_o in_o that_o he_o may_v love_v thou_o how_o free_o do_v he_o tender_a love_n to_o thy_o soul_n be_v there_o any_o other_o condition_n on_o which_o he_o tender_v himself_o to_o thou_o than_o thy_o acceptance_n of_o he_o say_v he_o not_o when_o he_o come_v and_o knock_v at_o thy_o door_n if_o thou_o will_v open_v i_o will_v come_v in_o and_o sup_v and_o thy_o heart_n shall_v be_v at_o no_o cost_n to_o prepare_v i_o have_v bring_v that_o with_o i_o that_o shall_v feast_v thou_o say_v he_o not_o if_o thou_o do_v but_o thinst_a come_v and_o drink_v and_o if_o thy_o heart_n be_v but_o willing_a eat_v the_o good_a thing_n of_o my_o bosom_n and_o live_v for_o ever_o thus_o mind_n those_o experience_n of_o christ_n act_v towards_o thou_o remember_v all_o the_o feast_n of_o love_n which_o he_o have_v give_v thou_o and_o by_o these_o thou_o will_v come_v to_o see_v how_o good_a how_o kind_a how_o love_v he_o be_v last_o add_v prayer_n to_o all_o these_o it_o be_v the_o choice_a wisdom_n to_o be_v wise_a in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n and_o if_o you_o lack_v this_o wisdom_n james_n give_v you_o his_o advice_n ask_v it_o of_o god_n and_o if_o you_o ask_v of_o god_n a_o wise_a heart_n in_o this_o particular_a doubtless_o he_o will_v not_o deny_v thou_o for_o he_o give_v
as_o the_o last_o thing_n observe_v from_o these_o word_n viz._n to_o let_v you_o see_v how_o efficacious_a the_o love_n of_o christ_n be_v unto_o the_o support_a of_o believer_n in_o any_o tribulation_n sermon_n vi._n ephes._n 3_o ver._n 19_o and_o to_o know_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n which_o pass_v knowledge_n he_o that_o be_v but_o little_o skill_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o face_n of_o time_n may_v very_o well_o see_v that_o these_o time_n wherein_o we_o live_v be_v very_o sad_a calamity_n lie_v upon_o every_o creature_n and_o woe_n have_v as_o it_o be_v enter_v upon_o the_o stage_n of_o the_o world_n and_o act_n a_o very_a bloody_a part_n to_o the_o terror_n of_o all_o even_o believer_n themselves_o some_o put_v on_o black_a and_o walk_v disconsolate_o yea_o almost_o all_o the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v clad_v in_o mourning_n as_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o misery_n under_o which_o most_o of_o the_o world_n at_o this_o day_n groan_v in_o these_o time_n therefore_o what_o can_v be_v more_o suitable_a to_o our_o thought_n than_o to_o consider_v of_o that_o which_o may_v serve_v to_o support_v our_o spirit_n it_o be_v the_o wisdom_n of_o such_o as_o be_v weak_a and_o liable_a to_o faint_n to_o carry_v about_o they_o some_o cordial_a or_o other_o to_o revive_v they_o and_o it_o shall_v be_v doubtless_o the_o wisdom_n of_o believer_n who_o be_v liable_a always_o to_o tribulation_n to_o lay_v in_o something_o which_o may_v keep_v they_o from_o faint_v under_o these_o tribulation_n indeed_o our_o lord_n jesus_n out_o of_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o mercy_n have_v prepare_v and_o provide_v rich_a and_o glorious_a cordial_n to_o support_v the_o soul_n of_o he_o and_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n especial_o who_o be_v the_o minister_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n to_o help_v believer_n with_o these_o cordial_n which_o our_o lord_n and_o their_o lord_n have_v prepare_v and_o therefore_o while_o other_o forget_v not_o only_o the_o saint_n but_o themselves_o take_v leave_n to_o press_v and_o urge_v great_a thing_n as_o matter_n of_o faith_n upon_o poor_a soul_n as_o if_o they_o have_v dominion_n over_o their_o faith_n i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o imitate_v the_o great_a apostle_n paul_n rather_o to_o show_v my_o self_n a_o helper_n of_o your_o joy_n ult_n 2_o cor._n 1._o ult_n than_o a_o lord_n of_o your_o faith_n it_o be_v this_o indeed_o which_o paul_n be_v much_o upon_o viz._n the_o furtherance_n of_o the_o joy_n and_o comfort_n of_o believer_n and_o it_o be_v this_o which_o he_o drive_v at_o in_o these_o word_n in_o the_o behalf_n of_o the_o ephesian_n for_o fear_v lest_o the_o news_n of_o these_o trouble_n in_o which_o he_o be_v shall_v so_o far_o trouble_v the_o ephesian_n as_o to_o make_v they_o faint_a he_o therefore_o bow_v his_o knee_n to_o the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n that_o he_o will_v be_v please_v to_o give_v they_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n that_o so_o by_o it_o their_o spirit_n may_v be_v keep_v from_o faint_a either_o at_o the_o news_n of_o he_o or_o fear_v of_o their_o own_o tribulation_n this_o be_v therefore_o the_o end_n why_o paul_n pray_v to_o god_n in_o the_o behalf_n of_o the_o ephesian_n that_o they_o may_v know_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n which_o pass_v knowledge_n i_o do_v observe_v this_o doctrine_n from_o it_o viz._n that_o the_o spiritual_a knowledge_n of_o the_o transcendency_n of_o christ_n love_n towards_o he_o be_v of_o special_a efficacy_n to_o keep_v our_o heart_n from_o faint_v under_o any_o trouble_n i_o suppose_v you_o easy_o see_v both_o the_o foundation_n and_o the_o proof_n of_o this_o point_n in_o this_o place_n yet_o that_o you_o may_v see_v both_o the_o clear_a let_v i_o hint_n these_o three_o thing_n first_o consider_v it_o that_o the_o apostle_n suppose_v that_o the_o ephesiant_a heart_n be_v apt_a to_o faint_v at_o their_o tribulation_n at_o the_o 13_o verse_n his_o desire_n that_o they_o may_v not_o faint_v do_v clear_o intimate_v this_o that_o they_o be_v apt_a to_o faint_v indeed_o the_o child_n of_o faith_n be_v not_o only_o prone_a to_o fear_v but_o be_v apt_a to_o faint_v in_o those_o fear_n second_o observe_v how_o upon_o this_o fear_n of_o the_o apostle_n lest_o they_o may_v faint_v or_o if_o you_o will_v upon_o his_o desire_n that_o they_o may_v not_o faint_v he_o fall_v to_o prayer_n and_o make_v it_o his_o request_n to_o god_n who_o alone_a royalty_n be_v to_o support_v the_o faint_a spirit_n of_o all_o the_o creature_n that_o be_v will_v be_v please_v to_o keep_v they_o from_o faint_v for_o say_v he_o for_o this_o cause_n i_o how_o my_o knee_n to_o the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n that_o be_v upon_o this_o desire_n of_o i_o that_o you_o may_v not_o faint_a i_o bow_v my_o knee_n to_o he_o who_o alone_o be_v able_a to_o support_v your_o spirit_n three_o consider_v that_o among_o the_o rest_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o he_o pray_v to_o god_n for_o in_o their_o behalf_n that_o they_o may_v not_o faint_v he_o pray_v for_o this_o in_o the_o text_n as_o in_o the_o last_o place_n that_o they_o may_v know_v the_o love_n of_o christ_n which_o pass_v knowledge_n and_o indeed_o the_o very_a spirit_n and_o strength_n of_o all_o that_o which_o the_o apostle_n have_v pray_v for_o in_o the_o former_a verse_n in_o their_o behalf_n lie_v in_o this_o last_o and_o happy_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o he_o bring_v in_o this_o as_o the_o last_o particular_a be_v as_o it_o be_v that_o last_o cordial_a which_o he_o pray_v for_o in_o their_o behalf_n and_o if_o it_o have_v fail_v he_o know_v not_o as_o it_o be_v what_o to_o ask_v of_o god_n for_o they_o this_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o last_o dosis_n of_o the_o doctor_n which_o if_o it_o help_v not_o the_o patient_a the_o doctor_n be_v at_o a_o stand_n and_o be_v puzzle_v and_o know_v not_o what_o else_o to_o give_v so_o that_o i_o suppose_v you_o may_v easy_o see_v not_o only_o the_o foot_n that_o this_o text_n afford_v for_o this_o truth_n but_o also_o a_o great_a and_o solid_a proof_n of_o the_o truth_n thereof_o in_o it_o and_o yet_o that_o you_o may_v see_v this_o truth_n more_o clear_o from_o this_o place_n i_o will_v in_o a_o word_n show_v you_o how_o that_o the_o very_a spirit_n and_o strength_n of_o the_o other_o cordial_n which_o he_o here_o pray_v for_o be_v as_o it_o be_v wrap_v up_o in_o this_o viz._n the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n for_o consider_v first_o he_o pray_v that_o they_o may_v be_v strengthen_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n by_o his_o spirit_n verse_n 16._o now_o what_o be_v that_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n by_o the_o spirit_n but_o that_o divine_a and_o spiritual_a joy_n which_o be_v through_o he_o the_o joy_n of_o the_o lord_n do_v give_v strength_n nehem_n 8.10_o now_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o demonstrate_v that_o the_o chief_a ground_n upon_o which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v build_v that_o joy_n which_o through_o he_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n be_v this_o viz._n the_o shed_v abroad_o of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n in_o they_o christ_n have_v promise_v to_o send_v the_o spirit_n as_o a_o comforter_n to_o believer_n he_o say_v that_o he_o i.e._n the_o spirit_n shall_v take_v of_o i_o and_o show_v unto_o you_o john_n 16._o for_o 14_o &_o 15._o now_o what_o be_v there_o in_o all_o jesus_n christ_n of_o sweet_a efficacy_n and_o power_n which_o the_o spirit_n can_v take_v and_o declare_v to_o believer_n than_o the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o love_n which_o pass_v knowledge_n so_o that_o if_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v that_o which_o help_v to_o support_v thy_o soul_n from_o faint_a and_o if_o that_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v by_o a_o creation_n of_o divine_a joy_n or_o bring_v of_o divine_a comfort_n and_o that_o bring_v of_o comfort_n in_o the_o spirit_n depend_v upon_o reveal_v something_o of_o the_o heart_n of_o christ_n to_o the_o soul_n than_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o this_o cordial_a lie_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n which_o alone_o the_o spirit_n be_v able_a to_o bring_v in_o as_o it_o be_v from_o christ_n heart_n and_o shed_v it_o into_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n second_o the_o apostle_n do_v pray_v as_o a_o mean_n to_o keep_v the_o ephesian_n from_o faint_v that_o christ_n may_v dwell_v in_o their_o heart_n by_o faith_n ver_fw-la 17._o now_o a_o very_a few_o thought_n will_v discover_v that_o the_o strength_n of_o this_o comfort_n do_v lie_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n for_o whereas_o the_o soul_n may_v
do_v great_o rejoice_v the_o heart_n of_o a_o believer_n more_o than_o wine_n do_v the_o heart_n of_o any_o carnal_a creature_n so_o that_o this_o shall_v suffice_v as_o to_o the_o first_o particular_a viz._n the_o declaration_n wherein_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n as_o it_o be_v efficacious_a to_o keep_v the_o heart_n from_o faint_v in_o trouble_n do_v consist_v now_o in_o the_o next_o place_n we_o shall_v show_v wherein_o the_o efficacy_n of_o such_o a_o knowledge_n as_o this_o be_v of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n do_v appear_v for_o the_o support_v of_o faint_a soul_n and_o this_o we_o shall_v show_v in_o two_o branch_n first_o general_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n will_v appear_v in_o its_o effect_n of_o five_o thing_n which_o be_v of_o great_a virtue_n to_o bear_v up_o the_o heart_n that_o it_o faint_v not_o in_o any_o trouble_n as_o now_o first_o in_o that_o it_o free_v the_o soul_n from_o those_o doubt_n and_o fear_n in_o which_o it_o be_v about_o its_o eternal_a condition_n there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o virtue_n in_o such_o a_o freedom_n as_o this_o be_v to_o keep_v up_o the_o soul_n from_o faint_v in_o trouble_n usual_o even_o those_o that_o be_v faithful_a when_o they_o be_v in_o any_o trouble_n be_v fearful_a of_o their_o eternal_a estate_n and_o do_v much_o question_v it_o but_o when_o that_o fear_n be_v remove_v and_o that_o great_a question_n be_v resolve_v they_o be_v exceed_o enable_v to_o bear_v up_o not_o only_o in_o regard_n of_o faint_v under_o but_o also_o cheerful_o to_o go_v through_o all_o their_o trouble_n the_o example_n of_o that_o martyr_n mr._n glover_n be_v famous_a for_o this_o he_o much_o doubt_v his_o condition_n a_o little_a before_o he_o suffer_v and_o there_o be_v a_o great_a many_o despondency_n in_o his_o spirit_n and_o a_o great_a many_o faint_n as_o it_o be_v so_o that_o he_o do_v not_o carry_v himself_o so_o cheerful_o as_o he_o will_v but_o afterward_o when_o god_n be_v please_v to_o shine_v in_o with_o the_o assurance_n of_o his_o love_n and_o to_o free_v he_o from_o this_o doubt_n under_o which_o he_o do_v saint_n than_o be_v he_o enable_v not_o only_o to_o bear_v out_o from_o faint_a but_o to_o go_v out_o and_o suffer_v with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o joy_n and_o cheerfulness_n now_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o show_v how_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n serve_v to_o free_v the_o soul_n from_o those_o doubt_n in_o which_o it_o be_v about_o its_o eternal_a condition_n he_o that_o know_v the_o transcendency_n of_o christ_n love_n will_v be_v easy_o free_v from_o doubt_v about_o his_o condition_n the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n in_o this_o respect_n cast_v out_o fear_n and_o indeed_o the_o chief_a ground_n of_o this_o doubt_n be_v the_o want_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n when_o once_o the_o believer_n be_v able_a to_o say_v i_o know_v the_o love_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o i_o know_v it_o not_o only_o for_o other_o but_o myself_o than_o he_o will_v be_v able_a to_o resolve_v what_o shall_v i_o doubt_v or_o who_o shall_v i_o fear_v sith_o jesus_n christ_n love_v i_o with_o such_o a_o transcendent_a love_n and_o thus_o be_v free_v from_o his_o fear_n he_o be_v also_o free_v from_o his_o faint_n second_o a_o assurance_n of_o a_o reward_n after_o all_o suffering_n and_o tribulation_n this_o do_v mighty_o support_v the_o soul_n from_o faint_v under_o they_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o moses_n do_v not_o faint_a though_o he_o be_v in_o affliction_n with_o the_o people_n of_o god_n because_o he_o be_v assure_v of_o the_o recompense_n of_o reward_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o paul_n notwithstanding_o his_o great_a tribulation_n be_v keep_v from_o faint_a because_o he_o be_v assure_v of_o a_o crown_n of_o life_n which_o be_v lay_v up_o for_o he_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o jesus_n christ_n himself_o be_v enable_v to_o endure_v without_o faint_v because_o of_o the_o joy_n that_o be_v set_v before_o he_o now_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n do_v effect_v and_o produce_v this_o assurance_n the_o soul_n that_o know_v how_o dear_o jesus_n christ_n do_v love_v he_o and_o what_o transcendent_a affection_n he_o bear_v unto_o he_o will_v with_o a_o little_a pain_n be_v bring_v to_o believe_v that_o certain_o he_o will_v full_o and_o glorious_o reward_v he_o for_o all_o the_o tribulation_n he_o endure_v for_o he_o o_o say_v the_o believer_n that_o know_v the_o love_n of_o jesus_n christ_n albeit_o what_o i_o feel_v be_v sore_o and_o what_o i_o fear_v be_v sad_a though_o my_o tribulation_n be_v many_o yea_o and_o heavy_a too_o yet_o i_o know_v i_o shall_v have_v a_o reward_n for_o all_o after_o all_o because_o jesus_n christ_n love_v i_o with_o a_o love_n pass_v knowledge_n and_o thus_o the_o believer_n will_v be_v sweet_o support_v from_o faint_v three_o a_o full_a acquiescence_n for_o rest_n in_o christ_n be_v very_o efficacious_a to_o keep_v the_o soul_n from_o faint_v under_o trouble_n that_o which_o cause_v the_o heart_n to_o despond_v and_o to_o be_v apt_a to_o faint_v be_v because_o it_o be_v apt_a to_o be_v toss_v up_o and_o down_o a_o unstable_a soul_n be_v like_a to_o the_o vessel_n in_o the_o storm_n without_o a_o anchor_n toss_v up_o and_o down_o with_o every_o wave_n and_o every_o wind_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o soul_n be_v apt_a to_o fret_v and_o to_o faint_v because_o they_o do_v not_o and_o can_v rest_v in_o god_n hence_o be_v that_o exhortation_n psal_n 37._o v._n 7._o rest_v in_o the_o lord_n fret_v not_o thyself_o man_n do_v fret_v and_o faint_a because_o they_o do_v not_o rest_v in_o the_o lord_n whereas_o if_o they_o can_v do_v the_o one_o they_o will_v be_v free_a from_o the_o other_o now_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n do_v bring_v the_o soul_n to_o such_o a_o rest_a and_o quiescance_n on_o christ_n o_o say_v the_o believer_n when_o to_o rest_v my_o heart_n in_o christ_n and_o to_o solace_v my_o soul_n in_o he_o and_o to_o be_v so_o far_o from_o faint_v under_o or_o fret_v at_o my_o tribulation_n as_o that_o i_o be_o able_a in_o my_o patience_n to_o possess_v myself_o and_o to_o rejoice_v in_o christ_n thus_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n work_v a_o rest_a upon_o he_o and_o that_o rest_n keep_v from_o faint_v four_o strength_n of_o love_n to_o jesus_n christ_n person_n serve_v to_o support_v the_o soul_n from_o faint_v under_o tribulation_n jacob_n love_n to_o rachel_n keep_v he_o from_o faint_v beginning_n now_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n be_v that_o which_o be_v able_a to_o produce_v that_o divine_a joy_n and_o that_o divine_a joy_n keep_v the_o heart_n from_o sink_v under_o sadness_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o gather_v up_o this_o conclusion_n that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n love_n be_v of_o special_a efficacy_n for_o keep_v the_o soul_n from_o faint_v under_o like_a suffering_n for_o what_o may_v they_o think_v be_v paul_n in_o prison_n for_o preach_v the_o gospel_n then_o sure_o may_v we_o fear_v the_o like_a for_o receive_v the_o gospel_n it_o be_v common_o see_v that_o the_o receiver_n of_o gospel-truth_n suffer_v as_o well_o as_o the_o revealer_n note_n note_n and_o certain_o the_o ephesian_n may_v say_v we_o shall_v be_v account_v as_o strange_o one_o upon_o another_o who_o be_v yet_o all_o belove_v of_o jesus_n christ_n but_o sad_a it_o be_v to_o see_v any_o saint_n look_v upon_o another_o with_o a_o frown_a countenance_n when_o as_o christ_n look_v upon_o he_o as_o well_o as_o upon_o himself_o with_o a_o smile_a face_n who_o do_v not_o bleed_v to_o see_v one_o believer_n to_o write_v a_o book_n of_o revile_n against_o another_o when_o as_o you_o look_v upon_o the_o gospel_n as_o a_o glorious_a book_n of_o love_n writ_v by_o christ_n to_o they_o all_o tell_v it_o not_o in_o gath_n publish_v it_o not_o in_o the_o of_o vanity_n in_o our_o desire_a knowledge_n we_o be_v all_o of_o we_o apt_a either_o to_o desire_v the_o knowledge_n of_o that_o that_o be_v above_o we_o and_o so_o unattainable_a or_o else_o beneath_o we_o and_o in_o that_o respect_n not_o so_o much_o desirable_a it_o be_v this_o golden_a apple_n of_o knowledge_n which_o be_v so_o take_v and_o tempt_v with_o our_o grandmother_n eve_n that_o albeit_o the_o best_a that_o she_o get_v by_o eat_v that_o apple_n be_v but_o the_o knowledge_n of_o evil_a which_o we_o have_v all_o be_v better_o without_o yet_o she_o be_v draw_v to_o eat_v of_o the_o apple_n not_o only_o as_o persuade_v of_o its_o be_v pleasant_a to_o the_o taste_n but_o because_o it_o be_v desirable_a to_o make_v one_o wise_a and_o sure_o as_o our_o grandmother_n do_v eat_v those_o sour_a grape_n so_o we_o all_o her_o child_n have_v ever_o since_o have_v our_o tooth_n set_v on_o edge_n with_o the_o same_o desire_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o too_o too_o often_o out_o of_o a_o eager_a desire_n and_o affectation_n of_o knowledge_n we_o be_v apt_a upon_o the_o one_o hand_n for_o to_o five_o too_o high_a and_o to_o pry_v into_o those_o hide_a secret_n which_o god_n have_v not_o reveal_v or_o else_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n we_o be_v apt_a to_o stoop_v too_o low_o and_o to_o dive_v into_o nicety_n and_o vanity_n at_o least_o into_o the_o knowledge_n of_o such_o thing_n in_o which_o we_o be_v not_o concern_v but_o as_o the_o apostle_n do_v say_v i_o shall_v show_v you_o a_o more_o excellent_a way_n by_o declare_v how_o you_o may_v poise_v your_o desire_n of_o knowledge_n so_o as_o that_o you_o shall_v be_v neither_o too_o high_a nor_o too_o low_a in_o the_o pursuit_n thereof_o do_v not_o say_v therefore_o who_o shall_v ascend_v to_o bring_v down_o jesus_n christ_n from_o above_o and_o to_o reveal_v the_o knowledge_n of_o hide_a glory_n and_o unconceivable_a mystery_n neither_o say_v who_o shall_v descend_v to_o raise_v he_o up_o from_o beneath_o but_o full_o and_o clear_o reveal_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o by_o the_o study_n and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o it_o we_o shall_v come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o now_o of_o all_o knowledge_n the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n as_o it_o be_v most_o sacred_a so_o it_o be_v most_o satisfactory_a and_o of_o all_o thing_n in_o christ_n the_o knowledge_n of_o his_o love_n and_o as_o that_o be_v most_o satisfactory_a so_o it_o be_v most_o sweet_a it_o be_v this_o knowledge_n which_o the_o apostle_n here_o pray_v that_o the_o ephesian_n may_v obtain_v and_o by_o consequence_n that_o knowledge_n which_o all_o christian_n ought_v to_o desire_v and_o labour_n for_o it_o concern_v you_o not_o so_o much_o to_o know_v art_n and_o science_n though_o in_o themselves_o and_o their_o way_n they_o be_v necessary_a and_o of_o worth_n neither_o do_v it_o concein_o you_o at_o least_o so_o much_o to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o other_o truth_n of_o the_o scripture_n which_o in_o their_o place_n be_v very_o mine_n of_o love_n and_o it_o concern_v we_o to_o dig_v very_o deep_a into_o it_o and_o not_o content_v ourselves_o with_o a_o bare_a discovery_n of_o that_o golden_a oar_n or_o vein_n of_o love_n which_o be_v upon_o the_o superficies_n or_o top_n of_o the_o same_o mine_n and_o in_o which_o we_o may_v easy_o discover_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o very_a letter_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o it_o do_v concern_v we_o to_o endeavour_v to_o attain_v unto_o the_o deep_a and_o mysterial_a discovery_n thereof_o which_o saint_n by_o the_o light_n of_o the_o spirit_n come_v to_o attain_v experimental_a 2_o a_o spiritual_a and_o experimental_a 2_o yea_o and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o also_o to_o endeavour_v to_o get_v a_o experimental_a knowledge_n of_o this_o love_n that_o as_o the_o painter_n curious_o paint_a love_n by_o draw_v the_o type_n of_o it_o out_o of_o his_o own_o bosom_n so_o we_o in_o like_a manner_n may_v be_v able_a by_o our_o christian_a discourse_n to_o paint_v forth_o and_o to_o declare_v what_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n be_v take_v especial_o the_o ground_n thereof_o out_o of_o our_o own_o bosom_n our_o own_o experience_n divine_n observe_v that_o the_o scripture_n own_v not_o any_o thing_n for_o knowledge_n at_o least_o save_v which_o be_v not_o experimental_a and_o certain_o that_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n whereof_o we_o shall_v now_o speak_v ought_v to_o be_v not_o only_o a_o bare_a head_n knowledge_n but_o especial_o a_o heart_n knowledge_n a_o experimental_a knowledge_n this_o i_o think_v good_a to_o add_v for_o the_o explication_n of_o the_o subject_n of_o the_o proposition_n now_o for_o the_o predicate_v or_o the_o thing_n that_o we_o do_v affirm_v of_o this_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n you_o our_o knowledge_n i.e._n so_o far_o as_o it_o can_v be_v know_v by_o the_o finite_a knowledge_n of_o creature_n but_o yet_o then_o we_o shall_v not_o know_v it_o so_o full_a as_o it_o be_v the_o schoolman_n speak_v of_o knowledge_n as_o they_o do_v of_o see_v objecti_fw-la duplex_fw-la plenitudo_fw-la scientioe_fw-la &_o visionis_fw-la viz_o plenitudo_fw-la 1_o subjecti_fw-la 2_o objecti_fw-la there_o be_v a_o twofold_a fullness_n of_o knowledge_n first_o a_o fullness_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o object_n i.e._n such_o a_o fullness_n as_o regard_v the_o thing_n itself_o second_o a_o fullness_n of_o knowledge_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o subject_n in_o which_o it_o be_v now_o for_o my_o own_o part_n i_o incline_v at_o least_o for_o present_a to_o conclude_v that_o although_o without_o doubt_n there_o shall_v be_v a_o fullness_n of_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n in_o respect_n of_o our_o knowledge_n i.e._n according_a to_o the_o utmost_a bound_n or_o extent_n which_o our_o knowledge_n when_o it_o be_v perfect_v to_o the_o high_a be_v capable_a of_o yet_o notwithstanding_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o fullness_n of_o knowledge_n as_o it_o relate_v to_o the_o thing_n itself_o viz._n the_o love_n of_o christ_n quoad_fw-la essentiam_fw-la &_o virtutem_fw-la intensivam_fw-la &_o extensivam_fw-la i.e._n when_o it_o be_v consider_v so_o far_o forth_o as_o it_o may_v be_v have_v unto_o all_o the_o effect_n and_o purpose_n whereunto_o that_o knowledge_n do_v extend_v itself_o this_o i_o say_v i_o think_v we_o shall_v not_o have_v but_o to_o all_o eternity_n we_o shall_v be_v the_o light_n and_o lustre_n and_o glory_n of_o all_o the_o gospel_n the_o love_n of_o christ_n to_o believer_n and_o i_o can_v choose_v but_o think_v those_o blame-worthy_a and_o to_o be_v reprove_v who_o in_o these_o time_n speak_v much_o of_o their_o part_n and_o ability_n in_o the_o beat_n out_o of_o some_o truth_n mere_o controversall_a which_o yet_o i_o speak_v not_o against_o in_o its_o place_n and_o yet_o neglect_v this_o knowledge_n which_o be_v of_o such_o necessary_a concernment_n i_o do_v not_o altogether_o blame_v those_o who_o study_v this_o headship_n of_o christ_n i_o mean_v this_o government_n it_o be_v i_o think_v this_o present_a truth_n which_o be_v most_o controvert_v in_o these_o time_n yet_o notwithstanding_o to_o study_v so_o far_o the_o head_n of_o christ_n as_o how_o many_o be_v there_o that_o may_v as_o one_o say_v of_o the_o schoolman_n be_v like_a unto_o traveller_n or_o man_n in_o a_o journey_n who_o have_v good_a bread_n about_o they_o but_o go_v gnaw_v and_o bite_v upon_o hard_a stone_n so_o indeed_o some_o man_n who_o have_v at_o least_o mean_n to_o have_v the_o bread_n of_o life_n christ_n love_n but_o they_o neglect_v it_o and_o spend_v their_o time_n in_o gnaw_v upon_o hard_a trivial_o at_o least_o not_o useful_a question_n be_v reprove_v o_o all_o you_o who_o so_o far_o spend_v yourselves_o about_o the_o obtain_n of_o any_o knowledge_n put_v it_o by_o and_o will_v not_o take_v it_o how_o often_o do_v christ_n open_v his_o bosom_n to_o the_o believer_n and_o let_v we_o he_o see_v love_n write_v in_o the_o golden_a letter_n of_o free_a grace_n and_o beseech_v the_o believer_n to_o look_v and_o live_v to_o contemplate_v it_o and_o to_o take_v comfort_n from_o it_o how_o often_o do_v christ_n say_v soul_n i_o love_v thou_o i_o love_v thou_o with_o a_o everlasting_a love_n therefore_o have_v i_o draw_v thou_o into_o this_o wilderness_n of_o trouble_n that_o here_o i_o may_v speak_v comfort_n unto_o thou_o where_o none_o case_n in_o which_o thou_o need_v comfort_v and_o for_o which_o thou_o will_v go_v to_o christ_n love_n answ_n my_o case_n be_v spiritual_a my_o soul_n be_v trouble_v within_o i_o see_v much_o sin_n but_o little_a grace_n and_o this_o go_v to_o my_o heart_n fill_v it_o with_o trouble_n how_o shall_v i_o improve_v christ_n love_n in_o this_o case_n for_o a_o cordial_a answ_n for_o that_o believer_n know_v christ_n love_v thou_o notwithstanding_o all_o this_o i_o beeleeve_v you_o think_v that_o christ_n do_v not_o affect_v you_o because_o your_o sin_n be_v so_o much_o and_o your_o grace_n be_v so_o little_a know_v soul_n though_o the_o woman_n be_v a_o sinner_n in_o the_o city_n and_o so_o full_a of_o sin_n yet_o christ_n love_n pass_v by_o her_o sin_n and_o pardon_v she_o christ_n love_n take_v the_o advantage_n of_o she_o many_o sin_n to_o show_v much_o love_n to_o her_o soul_n and_o it_o be_v his_o custom_n where_o sin_n abound_v there_o to_o make_v love_n superabound_v therefore_o thou_o may_v comfort_v thyself_o o_o sad_a soul_n with_o the_o thought_n of_o christ_n love_n this_o love_n make_v he_o to_o suffer_v for_o sin_n and_o this_o love_n make_v only_o much_o sin_n but_o little_a grace_n a._n be_v it_o so_o o_o believer_n yet_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n may_v comfort_v thou_o notwithstanding_o it_o thou_o think_v that_o grace_n be_v the_o
