run_v not_o into_o idolatry_n and_o superstition_n we_o make_v not_o void_a the_o commandment_n of_o god_n by_o receive_v the_o tradition_n of_o man_n however_o we_o be_v divide_v among_o ourselves_o in_o some_o matter_n of_o opinion_n and_o about_o civil_a thing_n yet_o we_o keep_v our_o first_o faith_n against_o popery_n answ_n but_o alas_o than_o our_o heart_n be_v divide_v from_o god_n when_o it_o by_o division_n it_o be_v worth_a our_o observe_v concern_v the_o jew_n they_o be_v many_o year_n contend_v about_o government_n from_o their_o come_n out_o of_o babylon_n till_o their_o subdue_a by_o the_o roman_n whether_o the_o priest_n shall_v govern_v they_o or_o some_o other_o till_o such_o time_n as_o they_o be_v reconcile_v by_o a_o desolation_n god_n destroy_v their_o temple_n and_o their_o city_n and_o by_o that_o mean_v put_v a_o end_n to_o all_o their_o intestine_a quarrel_n about_o government_n but_o till_o such_o time_n as_o god_n have_v bring_v upon_o they_o that_o judgement_n they_o can_v not_o be_v quiet_a division_n so_o far_o prevail_v among_o they_o that_o when_o their_o city_n be_v besiege_v by_o the_o roman_n without_o they_o have_v no_o soon_o get_v any_o little_a respite_n by_o beat_v back_o their_o assault_n but_o they_o fall_v present_o to_o fight_v as_o eager_o among_o themselves_o as_o if_o they_o have_v have_v no_o enemy_n near_o they_o if_o we_o will_v know_v how_o likely_a a_o people_n be_v to_o be_v destroy_v or_o how_o near_o they_o be_v to_o a_o mercy_n let_v we_o consider_v with_o ourselves_o how_o far_o forth_o they_o be_v divide_v or_o how_o far_o forth_o they_o be_v in_o a_o way_n of_o reconciliation_n the_o more_o division_n increase_v so_o much_o the_o near_o they_o be_v to_o ruin_v the_o near_a reconciliation_n not_o fit_a for_o mercy_n and_o therefore_o to_o make_v way_n for_o it_o he_o here_o promise_n i_o will_v send_v you_o elijah_n to_o turn_v the_o heart_n of_o the_o father_n etc._n etc._n lest_o i_o come_v and_o smite_v the_o earth_n with_o a_o curse_n second_o the_o mean_n which_o god_n principal_o intend_v to_o 2._o doctrine_n 2._o make_v use_n of_o to_o heal_v division_n by_o be_v ministry_n be_v able_a to_o do_v nothing_o because_o neither_o the_o one_o sword_n nor_o the_o other_o be_v a_o proper_a instrument_n to_o reach_v the_o heart_n or_o to_o work_v upon_o it_o they_o can_v destroy_v the_o person_n and_o take_v away_o the_o outward_a be_v and_o so_o make_v a_o change_n in_o the_o external_a state_n or_o condition_n of_o man_n but_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o make_v any_o inward_a conversion_n nor_o to_o put_v a_o principle_n of_o reconciliation_n into_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n one_o towards_o another_o the_o lord_n reserve_v this_o as_o his_o own_o work_n that_o he_o alone_o may_v have_v the_o glory_n of_o it_o it_o be_v a_o work_n which_o he_o take_v to_o himself_o because_o he_o alone_o be_v able_a to_o effect_v it_o and_o therefore_o when_o we_o desire_v or_o endeavour_v reconciliation_n one_o with_o another_o our_o eye_n must_v be_v principal_o upon_o he_o in_o who_o hand_n be_v all_o man_n heart_n the_o provide_v of_o instrument_n and_o the_o blessing_n of_o their_o labour_n be_v he_o and_o there_o can_v be_v no_o reconciliation_n without_o he_o it_o be_v a_o vain_a thing_n therefore_o for_o man_n to_o endeavour_v reconciliation_n among_o themselves_o until_o such_o time_n as_o they_o have_v make_v a_o reconcliation_n with_o god_n god_n be_v the_o party_n principal_a not_o only_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o offence_n but_o in_o the_o business_n of_o reconciliation_n we_o offend_v against_o he_o and_o therefore_o our_o great_a care_n must_v be_v to_o gain_v he_o and_o to_o strengthen_v our_o interest_n in_o he_o when_o god_n be_v reconcile_v to_o a_o people_n he_o will_v raise_v up_o fit_a instrument_n show_v they_o their_o work_n and_o their_o way_n and_o make_v their_o labour_n effectual_a and_o although_o the_o instrument_n which_o he_o provide_v be_v unlikely_a such_o as_o promise_v but_o a_o very_a little_a yet_o the_o work_n shall_v prosper_v in_o their_o hand_n and_o why_o because_o god_n be_v reconcile_v and_o provide_v mean_n of_o reconciliation_n among_o man_n with_o a_o purpose_n to_o bless_v oh_o how_o exceed_o be_v we_o behold_v unto_o god_n that_o he_o be_v please_v to_o take_v mind_v those_o matter_n of_o lesser_a difference_n wherein_o the_o jew_n of_o those_o time_n contend_v among_o themselves_o but_o sixthly_a although_o the_o ministry_n of_o john_n be_v practical_a rather_o then_o polemical_a yet_o he_o be_v a_o faithful_a witness_n in_o the_o grand_a controversy_n of_o the_o time_n concern_v the_o matter_n of_o religion_n in_o that_o great_a question_n whether_o jesus_n christ_n be_v the_o true_a messiah_n or_o no_o and_o therein_o he_o alone_o bear_v up_o his_o head_n against_o all_o the_o 8._o john_n 1._o 8._o body_n of_o the_o jew_n and_o though_o he_o be_v not_o that_o light_n yet_o he_o come_v to_o bear_v witness_n of_o that_o light_n in_o this_o he_o be_v so_o far_o from_o not_o engage_v himself_o as_o that_o he_o become_v the_o be_v not_o humane_a but_o beyond_o the_o power_n of_o a_o natural_a spirit_n but_o those_o elevation_n be_v no_o other_o than_o such_o as_o proceed_v from_o himself_o the_o prince_n of_o darkness_n
