or_o piece_n of_o arras_n which_o never_o make_v they_o smart_v or_o fear_n why_o now_o they_o find_v it_o be_v their_o own_o story_n and_o they_o perceive_v they_o read_v their_o own_o doom_n as_o if_o they_o find_v their_o name_n write_v in_o the_o curse_n or_o hear_v the_o law_n say_v as_o nathan_n thou_o be_v the_o man_n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n seem_v to_o he_o before_o but_o as_o a_o storm_n to_o a_o man_n in_o the_o dry_a house_n or_o as_o the_o pain_n of_o the_o sick_a to_o the_o healthful_a stander-by_n or_o as_o the_o torment_n of_o hell_n to_o a_o child_n that_o see_v the_o story_n of_o dives_n and_o lazarus_n upon_o the_o wall_n but_o now_o he_o find_v the_o disease_n be_v his_o own_o and_o feel_v the_o pain_n in_o his_o own_o bowel_n and_o the_o smart_n of_o the_o wound_n in_o his_o own_o soul._n in_o a_o word_n he_o find_v himself_o a_o condemn_a man_n and_o that_o he_o be_v dead_a and_o damn_a in_o point_n of_o law_n and_o that_o nothing_o be_v want_v but_o mere_a execution_n to_o make_v he_o most_o absolute_o and_o irrecoverable_o miserable_a gospel_n whether_o you_o will_v call_v this_o a_o work_n of_o the_o law_n or_o gospel_n as_o in_o several_a sense_n it_o be_v of_o both_o the_o law_n express_v and_o the_o gospel_n intimate_v and_o imply_v our_o former_a condemnation_n misery_n sure_o i_o be_o it_o be_v a_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n wrought_v in_o some_o measure_n in_o all_o the_o regenerate_a and_o though_o some_o do_v judge_n it_o a_o unnecessary_a bondage_n yet_o it_o be_v beyond_o my_o conceive_n how_o he_o shall_v come_v to_o christ_n for_o pardon_v that_o first_o find_v not_o himself_o guilty_a and_o condemn_v or_o for_o life_n that_o never_o find_v himself_o dead_a the_o whole_a need_v not_o the_o physician_n humiliation_n but_o they_o that_o be_v sick_a yet_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o the_o discovery_n of_o the_o remedy_n as_o soon_o as_o the_o misery_n must_v needs_o prevent_v a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o trouble_n and_o make_v the_o distinct_a effect_n on_o the_o soul_n to_o be_v with_o much_o more_o difficulty_n discern_v nay_o the_o act_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v so_o quick_a and_o oft_o so_o confuse_v that_o the_o distinct_a order_n of_o these_o working_n may_v not_o be_v apprehend_v or_o remember_v at_o all_o and_o perhaps_o the_o joyful_a apprehension_n of_o mercy_n may_v make_v the_o sense_n of_o misery_n the_o soon_o forget_v 3._o so_o do_v the_o spirit_n also_o convince_v the_o soul_n insufficiency_n of_o the_o creature_n vanity_n and_o insufficiency_n every_o man_n natural_o be_v a_o flat_a idolater_n our_o heart_n turn_v from_o god_n in_o our_o first_o fall_n and_o ever_o since_o the_o creature_n have_v be_v our_o god_n this_o be_v the_o grand_a sin_n of_o nature_n when_o we_o set_v up_o to_o ourselves_o a_o wrong_a end_n we_o must_v needs_o err_v in_o all_o the_o mean_n god_n the_o creature_n be_v to_o every_o unregenerate_a man_n his_o god_n and_o his_o christ._n he_o ascribe_v to_o it_o the_o divine_a prerogative_n and_o allow_v it_o the_o high_a room_n in_o his_o soul_n or_o if_o ever_o he_o come_v to_o be_v convince_v of_o misery_n he_o fly_v to_o we_o will_v be_v at_o our_o own_o and_o when_o we_o shall_v submit_v to_o his_o providence_n we_o usual_o quarrel_v at_o it_o as_o if_o we_o know_v better_a what_o be_v good_a or_o fit_a for_o we_o than_o he_o or_o how_o to_o dispose_v of_o all_o thing_n more_o wise_o if_o we_o have_v the_o disposal_n of_o the_o event_n of_o war_n and_o the_o order_n of_o the_o affair_n of_o church_n and_o state_n or_o the_o choice_n of_o our_o own_o outward_a condition_n it_o will_v be_v far_o otherwise_o then_o now_o it_o be_v and_o we_o think_v we_o can_v make_v a_o better_a disposal_n order_n and_o choice_n than_o god_n have_v make_v this_o be_v the_o language_n of_o a_o carnal_a heart_n though_o it_o do_v not_o always_o speak_v it_o out_o when_o we_o shall_v study_v god_n we_o study_v that_o great_a work_n to_o bring_v the_o heart_n back_o to_o god_n himself_o he_o convince_v the_o sinner_n 1._o that_o the_o creature_n or_o himself_o can_v neither_o be_v his_o god_n to_o make_v place_n this_o be_v it_o that_o i_o intend_v in_o this_o place_n the_o other_o be_v when_o a_o man_n do_v take_v the_o lord_n for_o his_o god_n but_o yet_o swerve_v in_o some_o thing_n from_o his_o command_n of_o this_o before_o it_o be_v a_o vain_a distinction_n that_o some_o make_v that_o the_o soul_n must_v be_v turn_v first_o from_o sin_n second_o from_o the_o creature_n to_o god_n for_o the_o sin_n that_o be_v thus_o set_v up_o against_o god_n be_v the_o choice_n of_o something_o below_o in_o his_o stead_n and_o no_o creature_n in_o itself_o be_v evil_a but_o the_o abuse_n of_o it_o be_v the_o sin_n creature_n therefore_o to_o turn_v from_o the_o creature_n be_v only_o to_o turn_v from_o that_o sinful_a abuse_n yet_o have_v the_o creature_n here_o a_o twofold_a consideration_n first_o as_o it_o be_v vain_a and_o insufficient_a to_o perform_v what_o the_o idolater_n expect_v and_o so_o i_o handle_v it_o here_o second_o as_o it_o be_v the_o object_n of_o such_o sinful_a abuse_n and_o the_o occasion_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o it_o fall_v under_o the_o former_a branch_n of_o our_o turn_v from_o sin_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n their_o division_n may_v be_v grant_v but_o this_o be_v only_o a_o various_a respect_n for_o indeed_o it_o be_v still_o only_o our_o sinful_a abuse_n of_o the_o creature_n in_o our_o vain_a admiration_n undue_a estimation_n too_o strong_a affection_n and_o false_a expectation_n which_o we_o turn_v from_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a error_n very_o common_a in_o the_o description_n of_o the_o work_n of_o conversion_n conversion_n the_o one_o of_o those_o who_o only_o mention_v the_o sinner_n turn_v from_o sin_n to_o god_n without_o mention_v any_o receive_n of_o christ_n by_o faith_n the_o other_o of_o those_o who_o on_o the_o contrary_a only_o mention_v a_o sinner_n believe_v and_o then_o think_v they_o have_v say_v all_o nay_o they_o blame_v they_o as_o legalist_n who_o make_v any_o thing_n but_o the_o bare_a believe_v of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n to_o we_o to_o be_v part_n of_o this_o work_n christ._n and_o will_v persuade_v poor_a soul_n to_o question_v all_o their_o former_a comfort_n and_o conclude_v the_o work_n to_o have_v be_v only_o legal_a and_o unsound_a because_o they_o have_v make_v their_o change_n of_o heart_n and_o turn_v from_o sin_n and_o creature_n part_n of_o it_o and_o have_v take_v up_o part_n of_o their_o comfort_n from_o the_o review_v of_o these_o as_o evidence_n of_o a_o right_a work_n indeed_o shall_v they_o take_v up_o here_o without_o christ_n or_o take_v such_o change_n in_o stead_n of_o christ_n in_o whole_a or_o in_o part_n the_o reprehension_n be_v just_a and_o the_o danger_n great_a but_o can_v christ_n be_v the_o way_n where_o the_o creature_n be_v the_o end_n be_v he_o not_o only_o the_o way_n to_o the_o father_n and_o must_v not_o a_o right_a end_n be_v intend_v before_o right_a mean_n can_v we_o seek_v to_o christ_n for_o to_o reconcile_v we_o to_o god_n while_o in_o our_o heart_n we_o prefer_v the_o creature_n before_o he_o 11.6_o or_o do_v god_n dispossess_v the_o creature_n and_o sincere_o turn_v the_o heart_n therefrom_o when_o he_o will_v not_o bring_v the_o soul_n to_o christ_n be_v it_o a_o work_n that_o be_v ever_o wrought_v in_o a_o unrenewed_a soul_n you_o will_v say_v that_o without_o faith_n it_o christ._n can_v christ_n be_v believe_v in_o where_o our_o own_o righteousness_n or_o any_o other_o thing_n be_v trust_v as_o our_o saviour_n father_n or_o do_v god_n ever_o thorough_o discover_v sin_n and_o misery_n and_o clear_o take_v the_o heart_n from_o all_o creature_n and_o self-righteousness_n and_o yet_o leave_v the_o soul_n unrenewed_a the_o truth_n be_v where_o the_o work_n be_v sincere_a there_o it_o be_v entire_a and_o all_o these_o part_n be_v true_o wrought_v and_o as_o turn_v from_o the_o creature_n to_o god_n and_o not_o by_o christ_n be_v no_o true_a turn_n so_o believe_v in_o christ_n while_o the_o creature_n have_v our_o heart_n be_v no_o true_a believe_v and_o therefore_o in_o the_o work_n of_o self-examination_n whoever_o will_v find_v in_o himself_o a_o through-sincere_a work_n must_v find_v a_o entire_a work_n even_o the_o one_o of_o these_o as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o in_o the_o
dark_a and_o our_o faith_n in_o he_o exceed_v feeble_a so_o be_v our_o love_n to_o he_o but_o little_a and_o therefore_o be_v our_o desire_n after_o he_o so_o dull_a 4._o sect_n iv_o 3._o it_o a_o enemy_n to_o prefer_v his_o brethren_n hearty_o before_o himself_o and_o to_o think_v mean_o of_o his_o own_o gift_n and_o worth_a and_o to_o take_v it_o well_o
of_o other_o that_o think_v so_o too_o and_o to_o love_v they_o that_o have_v low_a thought_n of_o he_o as_o well_o as_o those_o that_o have_v high_a to_o bear_v easy_o the_o injury_n or_o
