it_o be_v also_o certain_a that_o in_o those_o that_o be_v natural_o timorous_a the_o great_a heart_n denote_v also_o the_o great_a timidity_n we_o must_v then_o say_v that_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o heart_n do_v nothing_o of_o itself_o as_o to_o the_o courage_n and_o that_o we_o must_v add_v thereunto_o the_o abundance_n of_o heat_n and_o spirit_n for_o if_o the_o heart_n be_v great_a and_o that_o it_o have_v much_o heat_n and_o many_o spirit_n it_o will_v certain_o produce_v a_o very_a great_a courage_n but_o if_o the_o heart_n be_v small_a and_o that_o it_o have_v as_o much_o heat_n and_o as_o many_o spirit_n as_o that_o which_o be_v great_a it_o will_v make_v a_o more_o boil_a and_o a_o more_o impetuous_a courage_n because_o the_o heat_n be_v more_o active_a when_o it_o be_v shut_v up_o and_o restrain_v but_o that_o also_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o it_o be_v not_o so_o noble_a and_o generous_a forasmuch_o as_o that_o constraint_n make_v it_o easy_o pass_v to_o fury_n and_o that_o the_o smallness_n of_o the_o part_n be_v a_o effect_n of_o the_o weakness_n of_o the_o formative_a virtue_n or_o a_o defect_n of_o the_o matter_n which_o in_o the_o principal_a part_n both_o it_o appear_v less_o in_o this_o and_o be_v great_a in_o the_o great_a we_o have_v now_o nothing_o to_o add_v to_o the_o understanding_n of_o this_o business_n but_o to_o resolve_v two_o very_a considerable_a doubt_n which_o may_v arise_v from_o the_o former_a discourse_n for_o if_o the_o courage_n consist_v in_o the_o disposition_n we_o have_v now_o speak_v of_o two_o thing_n will_v follow_v which_o seem_v to_o combat_v reason_n and_o experience_n 1._o that_o courage_n will_v only_o be_v in_o the_o sensitive_a part_n because_o those_o disposition_n be_v all_o material_a and_o sensible_a although_o it_o be_v true_a that_o there_o be_v many_o which_o out_o of_o mere_a reason_n only_o be_v valiant_a and_o courageous_a without_o have_v this_o heat_n in_o the_o heart_n which_o we_o have_v observe_v 2._o that_o that_o animal_n which_o have_v not_o these_o disposition_n will_v never_o be_v move_v by_o any_o boldness_n see_v he_o will_v want_v the_o courage_n which_o be_v a_o power_n whence_o this_o passion_n proceed_v and_o yet_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o most_o timorous_a in_o divers_a encounter_n perform_v action_n of_o boldness_n and_o of_o courage_n and_o that_o the_o weak_a be_v most_o susceptible_a of_o choler_n which_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o boldness_n we_o must_v then_o say_v that_o there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o courage_n boldness_n there_o be_v two_o kind_n of_o boldness_n the_o one_o which_o belong_v to_o the_o superior_a part_n and_o the_o other_o which_o be_v in_o the_o sensitive_a appetite_n for_o since_o the_o irascible_a faculty_n be_v the_o principle_n and_o as_o it_o be_v the_o substance_n of_o courage_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o the_o will_n which_o have_v its_o irascible_a part_n must_v also_o have_v its_o particular_a courage_n and_o must_v be_v as_o much_o different_a from_o that_o which_o be_v in_o the_o appetite_n as_o the_o will_n be_v from_o the_o appetite_n itself_o it_o be_v true_a that_o courage_n consist_v not_o only_o in_o the_o irascible_a virtue_n but_o that_o it_o suppose_v also_o in_o it_o a_o certain_a disposition_n which_o make_v it_o the_o more_o easy_o operate_v for_o a_o animal_n be_v not_o courageous_a for_o have_v the_o irascible_a part_n but_o for_o have_v of_o it_o such_o that_o it_o easy_o may_v move_v itself_o against_o difficulty_n but_o this_o disposition_n ever_o follow_v the_o that_o satisfaction_n which_o this_o subject_n require_v as_o also_o in_o the_o discourse_n of_o hope_n that_o which_o be_v necessary_a to_o make_v we_o understand_v how_o the_o spirit_n settle_v and_o dart_v forth_o themselves_o at_o the_o same_o time_n we_o be_v only_o to_o observe_v that_o when_o we_o say_v that_o the_o motion_n of_o desire_n and_o of_o boldness_n be_v alike_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v understand_v in_o this_o dart_v forth_o for_o its_o certain_a that_o the_o soul_n never_o stiffen_v itself_o in_o desire_n unless_o it_o be_v accompany_v with_o hope_n with_o boldness_n or_o with_o anger_n forasmuch_o as_o she_o stiffen_v herself_o only_o to_o fortify_v herself_o and_o that_o she_o need_v not_o employ_v her_o strength_n unless_o difficulty_n present_v themselves_o which_o be_v not_o in_o the_o passion_n of_o the_o concupiscible_a part_n as_o elsewhere_o have_v be_v already_o say_v now_o the_o first_o thing_n which_o follow_v this_o motion_n boldness_n whence_o the_o heat_n come_v that_o raise_v up_o itself_o in_o boldness_n be_v the_o heat_n which_o shed_v itself_o over_o all_o the_o body_n and_o which_o by_o degree_n augment_v itself_o and_o proportionable_o as_o the_o impetuosity_n grow_v great_a for_o at_o first_o before_o the_o spirit_n dart_v themselves_o forth_o when_o they_o keep_v themselves_o only_o firm_a this_o quality_n be_v very_o moderate_a as_o it_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o hope_n but_o when_o they_o begin_v to_o make_v their_o fally_n and_o darting_n which_o drive_v and_o throw_v they_o forth_o it_o be_v then_o that_o it_o become_v violent_a and_o that_o at_o last_o it_o inflame_v all_o the_o part_n but_o the_o difficulty_n be_v to_o know_v whence_o this_o heat_n proceed_v for_o although_o there_o be_v a_o appearance_n which_o engender_v have_v no_o place_n in_o those_o which_o be_v subtle_a and_o fluid_a it_o be_v certain_a that_o there_o be_v passion_n where_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o spirit_n have_v a_o very_a quick_a and_o impetuous_a motion_n as_o we_o see_v in_o fear_n yet_o even_o in_o they_o heat_n augment_v not_o but_o even_o weaken_v itself_o for_o my_o part_n i_o believe_v that_o without_o stick_v at_o now_o what_o other_o source_n can_v it_o have_v but_o this_o secret_a virtue_n we_o speak_v of_o in_o fine_a since_o the_o soul_n reside_v in_o this_o part_n as_o in_o its_o throne_n and_o that_o be_v necessary_a and_o that_o in_o perform_v their_o endeavour_n and_o stir_v itself_o to_o produce_v it_o they_o cause_v it_o to_o issue_n out_o of_o those_o principle_n where_o she_o potential_o be_v beside_o since_o the_o soul_n have_v force_n which_o she_o employ_v when_o she_o will_v which_o she_o awake_v and_o stir_v up_o at_o her_o need_n she_o must_v needs_o have_v the_o same_o power_n this_o temperature_n meet_v with_o a_o subtle_a and_o loose_a matter_n as_o be_v to_o be_v see_v in_o those_o pure_o choleric_a it_o will_v indeed_o produce_v courage_n but_o the_o force_n thereof_o will_v not_o be_v perfect_a and_o can_v long_v neither_o maintain_v a_o combat_n or_o a_o strong_a assault_n because_o the_o spirit_n present_o dissipate_v themselves_o and_o that_o the_o part_n concupiscible_a for_o beside_o that_o heat_n and_o spirit_n be_v necessary_a for_o all_o the_o faculty_n of_o life_n and_o that_o love_n and_o desire_n be_v ardent_a and_o impetuous_a passion_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v that_o those_o creature_n which_o be_v to_o go_v fly_v or_o swim_v and_o which_o be_v often_o oblige_v to_o run_v after_o good_a shall_v have_v disposition_n necessary_a to_o perform_v these_o great_a motion_n to_o wit_n heat_v and_o firmness_n thus_o force_n will_v not_o be_v particular_o affect_v to_o the_o irascible_a part_n but_o it_o will_v be_v always_o in_o common_a for_o other_o great_a little_a or_o temperate_a and_o every_o one_o have_v its_o portion_n and_o measure_n different_a from_o all_o the_o rest_n we_o then_o confess_v that_o the_o concupiscible_a and_o irascible_a appetite_n both_o employ_v heat_n and_o spirit_n and_o that_o there_o must_v be_v firmness_n in_o the_o motion_n of_o either_o of_o they_o but_o there_o be_v this_o difference_n that_o the_o one_o require_v a_o sweet_a heat_n moist_a and_o pleasant_a and_o that_o the_o other_o will_v have_v one_o that_o be_v lively_a dry_a and_o pungent_a for_o the_o reason_n we_o shall_v hereafter_o deduce_v and_o that_o that_o firmness_n which_o appear_v in_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o concupiscible_a part_n be_v outward_o and_o pure_o accidental_a not_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o happen_v to_o the_o part_n out_o of_o necessity_n instead_o that_o in_o other_o it_o be_v first_o find_v in_o the_o irascible_a appetite_n which_o afterward_o communicate_v it_o to_o the_o organ_n for_o this_o appetite_n only_o can_v establish_v itself_o and_o when_o the_o soul_n suffer_v this_o kind_n of_o motion_n it_o even_a form_n some_o passion_n of_o the_o irascible_a appetite_n indeed_o this_o establishment_n of_o the_o soul_n seem_v to_o be_v the_o proper_a agitation_n of_o the_o irascible_a appetite_n because_o there_o be_v no_o motion_n more_o efficacious_a to_o resist_v and_o assault_v then_o that_o which_o reunite_v the_o virtue_n which_o hinder_v it_o to_o yield_v and_o which_o render_v the_o assault_n the_o more_o strong_a she_o also_o make_v use_n of_o it_o in_o all_o generous_a passion_n and_o if_o she_o cast_v herself_o into_o boldness_n and_o into_o anger_n it_o be_v certain_a she_o first_o settle_v herself_o and_o the_o only_a difference_n which_o there_o be_v betwixt_o the_o motion_n of_o desire_n and_o that_o of_o boldness_n be_v that_o at_o first_o the_o soul_n dart_v itself_o forth_o without_o settle_v itself_o and_o that_o in_o the_o other_o it_o perform_v both_o together_o as_o have_v be_v say_v the_o other_o difficulty_n be_v courage_n how_o force_n be_v different_a from_o courage_n that_o if_o force_v consist_v in_o the_o heat_n of_o the_o heart_n where_o we_o also_o have_v place_v courage_n it_o must_v follow_v that_o force_n and_o courage_n be_v the_o same_o thing_n what_o ever_o be_v say_v that_o a_o man_n have_v courage_n but_o want_v force_n and_o that_o force_v and_o courage_n must_v be_v join_v for_o the_o execution_n of_o great_a design_n we_o therefore_o say_v that_o heat_n alone_o may_v make_v courage_n all_o entire_a but_o that_o it_o make_v but_o a_o part_n of_o force_n beside_o courage_n be_v the_o power_n itself_o and_o force_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v as_o the_o instrument_n of_o this_o power_n for_o heat_n be_v not_o courage_n but_o it_o produce_v in_o the_o faculty_n this_o disposition_n and_o capacity_n of_o operate_a which_o we_o call_v courage_n instead_o whereof_o we_o may_v say_v subject_n wherein_o it_o be_v but_o it_o be_v to_o go_v too_o far_o into_o the_o subtlety_n of_o the_o school_n let_v we_o return_v to_o our_o discourse_n of_o boldness_n and_o see_v what_o effect_n it_o produce_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o in_o the_o humour_n chap._n iu._n what_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o of_o the_o humour_n be_v in_o boldness_n have_v show_v you_o that_o the_o consider_v the_o countenance_n of_o a_o man_n before_o he_o assault_v ill_a but_o who_o only_o see_v it_o come_v will_v perceive_v no_o sign_n of_o this_o sally_n of_o the_o spirit_n forasmuch_o as_o he_o change_v not_o colour_n and_o that_o fire_n which_o we_o see_v afterward_o glitter_v in_o his_o eye_n appear_v not_o for_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o if_o these_o spirit_n cast_v themselves_o on_o those_o part_n they_o will_v carry_v thither_o redness_n and_o splendour_n and_o will_v not_o leave_v they_o that_o coldness_n and_o equality_n with_o which_o he_o look_v upon_o and_o consider_v it_o be_v natural_a and_o ordinary_a in_o some_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o greatness_n of_o courage_n because_o the_o soul_n which_o have_v a_o secret_a knowledge_n of_o the_o motion_n it_o ought_v proceed_v wherewith_o the_o spirit_n be_v agitate_a in_o this_o passion_n to_o seek_v now_o what_o the_o end_n of_o all_o these_o motion_n be_v and_o what_o the_o soul_n motive_n be_v when_o she_o excite_v they_o be_v a_o useless_a thing_n at_o least_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o stiffen_a and_o dart_v forth_o of_o the_o spirit_n which_o have_v be_v curious_o examine_v in_o the_o precedent_a chapter_n and_o as_o for_o those_o which_o grief_n cause_v we_o shall_v then_o propose_v they_o when_o we_o treat_v of_o that_o passion_n for_o as_o concern_v the_o shock_n the_o ebullition_n and_o the_o trouble_n which_o here_o happen_v they_o be_v effect_n which_o be_v do_v out_o of_o necessity_n without_o the_o soul_n intention_n of_o produce_v they_o be_v altogether_o useless_a for_o her_o design_n yet_o not_o to_o leave_v the_o reader_n in_o doubt_n concern_v those_o two_o kind_n of_o motion_n which_o in_o grief_n we_o assign_v the_o spirit_n it_o shall_v suffice_v to_o say_v by_o way_n of_o advance_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o at_o that_o time_n content_a to_o cause_v the_o spirit_n to_o retire_v to_o the_o heart_n but_o that_o she_o also_o cause_v they_o to_o shut_v themselves_o up_o in_o themselves_o and_o in_o the_o design_n which_o she_o have_v to_o estrange_v herself_o from_o the_o ill_a which_o urge_v she_o she_o conceive_v slight_a be_v not_o able_a to_o save_v she_o from_o the_o danger_n unless_o she_o shut_v herself_o up_o in_o herself_o if_o she_o stop_v not_o the_o enemy_n passage_n and_o if_o as_o much_o as_o she_o possible_o can_v she_o hide_v aversion_n which_o common_o accompany_v anger_n forasmuch_o as_o their_o agitation_n be_v conformable_a to_o that_o grief_n raise_v up_o as_o in_o its_o place_n we_o shall_v make_v know_v it_o be_v anger_n which_o restrain_v and_o drive_v they_o forth_o with_o impetuosity_n we_o may_v hereupon_o say_v that_o joy_n may_v form_v itself_o in_o the_o superior_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n whilst_o
