he_o do_v not_o so_o deal_v though_o they_o have_v deserve_v it_o at_o god_n hand_n as_o well_o as_o pharaoh_n have_v ver._n 18._o therefore_o have_v he_o mercy_n on_o who_o he_o will_v have_v mercy_n and_o who_o he_o will_v he_o harden_v i._n e._n therefore_o have_v he_o just_o without_o any_o the_o least_o unrighteousness_n at_o all_o mercy_n on_o those_o on_o who_o he_o will_v have_v mercy_n and_o again_o on_o who_o he_o will_v not_o have_v that_o mercy_n he_o just_o do_v deny_v it_o to_o they_o and_o without_o the_o least_o unrighteousness_n harden_v they_o these_o word_n just_o or_o without_o unrighteousness_n be_v here_o to_o be_v understand_v that_o the_o conclusion_n may_v come_v up_o to_o answer_v the_o objection_n make_v or_o couch_v in_o the_o fourteen_o verse_n and_o this_o conclusion_n thus_o understand_v be_v no_o more_o than_o the_o premise_n will_v bear_v for_o nature_n itself_o will_v tell_v you_o that_o what_o god_n do_v he_o do_v just_o and_o you_o can_v conceive_v god_n but_o you_o must_v conceive_v he_o to_o be_v just_a for_o he_o that_o be_v unjust_a can_v be_v god_n therefore_o he_o have_v mercy_n on_o who_o he_o will_v have_v mercy_n this_o because_o he_o will_v harden_v they_o who_o god_n will_v he_o just_o harden_v and_o if_o he_o just_o harden_v who_o he_o will_v he_o may_v deny_v remission_n of_o sin_n to_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n according_a to_o the_o flesh_n and_o harden_v they_o if_o he_o will_v or_o because_o he_o will_v yea_o though_o they_o seek_v justification_n by_o work_n without_o any_o injustice_n or_o unrighteousness_n in_o himself_o at_o all_o for_o do_v so_o he_o harden_v this_n be_v oppose_v to_o the_o mercy_n which_o he_o speak_v of_o in_o the_o former_a part_n of_o the_o verse_n which_o mercy_n consist_v in_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o justification_n and_o therefore_o be_v it_o oppose_v to_o that_o because_o where_o god_n do_v not_o remit_v the_o sin_n of_o unbeliever_n and_o justify_v they_o i_o speak_v especial_o in_o the_o case_n of_o positive_a unbelief_n as_o i_o may_v so_o call_v it_o that_o be_v where_o man_n have_v the_o gospel_n or_o word_n of_o god_n preach_v to_o they_o and_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v it_o but_o put_v it_o from_o they_o which_o be_v that_o which_o the_o apostle_n chief_o speak_v of_o and_o against_o in_o this_o epistle_n he_o do_v not_o only_o not_o remit_v their_o sin_n but_o do_v also_o harden_v their_o heart_n for_o a_o kind_n of_o punishment_n of_o their_o unbelief_n see_v for_o this_o matth._n 13._o verse_n 11_o 12_o 13_o 14_o 15._o but_o note_n that_o though_o god_n harden_v the_o heart_n of_o unbeliever_n he_o do_v it_o not_o by_o any_o positive_a operation_n upon_o their_o soul_n or_o heart_n so_o as_o to_o be_v the_o author_n of_o sin_n thereby_o but_o by_o privative_a and_o permissive_a way_n as_o by_o withhold_v his_o grace_n or_o with_o hold_v the_o mean_n by_o which_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v mollify_v and_o by_o permit_v satan_n to_o nourish_v and_o foster_v that_o hardness_n which_o satan_n may_v do_v many_o way_n and_o by_o suggest_v divers_a argument_n to_o they_o and_o by_o stir_v up_o evil_a lust_n and_o affection_n in_o they_o etc._n etc._n he_o do_v it_o sometime_o also_o in_o that_o he_o punish_v not_o offender_n according_a to_o their_o offence_n so_o soon_o as_o they_o offend_v but_o direct_a answer_n take_v up_o the_o objector_n for_o his_o sauciness_n in_o that_o he_o will_v be_v so_o saucy_a as_o to_o chap_v logic_n with_o his_o god_n whereas_o when_o we_o know_v that_o god_n have_v do_v any_o thing_n though_o we_o know_v not_o his_o particular_a reason_n and_o the_o manner_n of_o his_o work_n we_o shall_v with_o david_n become_v dumb_a and_o open_v not_o our_o mouth_n wo_n to_o he_o that_o strive_v with_o his_o maker_n let_v the_o potsherd_v strive_v with_o the_o potsherd_v of_o the_o earth_n shall_v the_o clay_n say_v to_o he_o that_o fashion_v it_o what_o makâ—st_v thou_o ver._n 21._o have_v not_o the_o potter_n power_n over_o the_o clay_n of_o the_o same_o lump_n to_o make_v one_o vessel_n to_o honour_n and_o another_o unto_o dishonour_n supple_a if_o to_o show_v his_o wrath_n and_o to_o make_v his_o power_n know_v endure_v with_o much_o long_a suffering_n the_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n fit_v to_o destruction_n ver._n 23._o and_o that_o he_o may_v make_v know_v the_o riches_n of_o his_o glory_n on_o the_o vesselâ—_n of_o mercy_n which_o he_o have_v afore_o prepare_v unto_o glory_n supple_a what_o can_v thou_o say_v against_o that_o or_o what_o and_o unbelief_n endure_v with_o much_o long_a suffering_n i._n e._n harden_a and_o yet_o not_o positive_o but_o privative_o that_o be_v by_o suffer_v they_o for_o a_o long_a time_n together_o to_o walk_v on_o in_o their_o pervicacious_a way_n without_o punishment_n yet_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o the_o long_a suffering_n of_o god_n lead_v man_n to_o repentance_n though_o they_o after_o their_o hardness_n and_o impenitent_a heart_n treasure_n up_o unto_o themselves_o wrath_n against_o the_o day_n of_o wrath_n rom._n 2._o ver_fw-la 4.5_o so_o that_o god_n in_o wrath_n remember_v appear_v by_o the_o history_n of_o the_o act_n of_o the_o apostle_n ver._n 23._o and_o that_o he_o may_v make_v know_v the_o riches_n of_o his_o glory_n &c_n &c_n and_o what_o if_o god_n that_o he_o may_v make_v know_v the_o abundance_n of_o his_o goodness_n to_o those_o who_o he_o decree_v to_o prepare_v to_o glory_n have_v prepare_v they_o to_o glory_n what_o can_v thou_o say_v to_o that_o or_o what_o unrighteousness_n be_v in_o that_o the_o apostle_n by_o the_o word_n riches_n use_v to_o signify_v a_o abundance_n as_o chap._n 2.4_o chap._n 11.33_o 2_o cor._n 8.2_o ephes_n 1.7_o and_o chap._n 2.7_o and_o so_o he_o do_v here_o and_o by_o glory_n he_o mean_v here_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n so_o that_o by_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o glory_n we_o may_v understand_v the_o abundance_n of_o his_o goodness_n as_o ephes_n 3.16_o every_o attribute_n of_o god_n be_v glorious_a and_o may_v by_o a_o metonymy_n be_v call_v his_o glory_n many_o interpreter_n do_v join_v the_o 22._o and_o 23._o verse_n together_o as_o though_o their_o be_v nothing_o defective_a here_o and_o that_o the_o apostle_n will_v give_v we_o to_o know_v here_o that_o god_n endure_v with_o much_o long_o suffer_v the_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n fit_v to_o destruction_n and_o so_o harden_v they_o for_o two_o reason_n first_o that_o he_o may_v show_v his_o wrath_n and_o make_v his_o power_n know_v in_o the_o destruction_n of_o those_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n and_o second_o that_o by_o his_o severity_n show_v on_o the_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n he_o may_v make_v his_o mercy_n more_o conspicuous_a and_o high_a to_o be_v value_v which_o he_o show_v to_o the_o vessel_n of_o mercy_n for_o a_o contrary_a set_v off_o and_o illustrate_v its_o contrary_a and_o that_o which_o be_v common_a to_o many_o be_v not_o so_o much_o esteem_v of_o as_o that_o which_o appertain_v to_o few_o yet_o notwithstanding_o i_o
