this_o day_n and_o will_v do_v to_o the_o world_n end_n he_o will_v never_o give_v it_o over_o so_o that_o we_o may_v be_v confident_a we_o shall_v have_v such_o degree_n of_o holiness_n and_o grace_n bestow_v upon_o we_o as_o be_v necessary_a for_o we_o the_o knowledge_n etc._n etc._n as_o it_o assure_v we_o of_o his_o dear_a love_n to_o we_o and_o his_o tender_a care_n of_o we_o what_o our_o saviour_n do_v in_o heaven_n in_o a_o way_n of_o intercession_n if_o it_o be_v unknown_a to_o we_o though_o it_o may_v profit_v we_o and_o benefit_v we_o very_o much_o it_o can_v not_o comfort_v as_o at_o all_o but_o when_o we_o know_v that_o jesus_n christ_n have_v such_o a_o singular_a regard_n to_o we_o and_o that_o his_o heart_n and_o his_o affection_n work_v towards_o we_o so_o sweet_o and_o so_o strong_o now_o he_o be_v in_o heaven_n at_o so_o great_a a_o distance_n from_o we_o i_o mean_v as_o he_o be_v man_n that_o he_o be_v always_o take_v all_o advantage_n to_o further_o and_o promote_v our_o business_n with_o his_o father_n and_o speak_v to_o he_o upon_o all_o occasion_n for_o our_o good_a and_o in_o a_o word_n that_o he_o be_v so_o extreme_o kind_a and_o love_a to_o we_o joy_n use_v 1_o now_o be_v it_o so_o my_o brethren_n that_o the_o assure_a knowledge_n of_o our_o saviour_n intercession_n be_v one_o etc._n etc._n if_o then_o we_o will_v abound_v in_o this_o heavenly_a affection_n let_v we_o exact_o study_v and_o thorough_o pâ—y_v into_o our_o saviour_n intercession_n that_o we_o may_v know_v as_o much_o of_o it_o as_o we_o be_v able_a to_o attain_v to_o we_o be_v here_o in_o a_o unquiet_a and_o unstable_a world_n in_o which_o we_o meet_v with_o many_o cause_n of_o discomfort_n from_o within_o and_o from_o without_o and_o many_o time_n they_o take_v extreme_o deep_a upon_o we_o so_o as_o almost_o to_o make_v our_o life_n a_o burden_n to_o we_o now_o if_o we_o will_v be_v free_a from_o such_o distemper_n let_v we_o endeavour_v to_o look_v more_o into_o our_o saviour_n intercession_n and_o if_o we_o understand_v it_o well_o it_o will_v fill_v we_o full_a of_o comfort_n that_o will_v swell_v high_a exceed_o above_o all_o the_o affliction_n of_o this_o present_a life_n indeed_o the_o intercession_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v of_o itself_o a_o large_a volume_n too_o much_o for_o we_o to_o read_v over_o and_o that_o volume_n seal_v too_o shut_v up_o in_o heaven_n that_o we_o can_v open_v it_o or_o look_v into_o it_o but_o he_o have_v give_v we_o a_o brief_a compendium_n and_o a_o short_a abridgement_n of_o it_o in_o the_o prayer_n that_o he_o make_v for_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n and_o in_o they_o for_o all_o the_o church_n that_o be_v or_o shall_v be_v to_o the_o world_n end_n that_o we_o may_v read_v it_o and_o acquaint_v ourselves_o with_o it_o he_o speak_v that_o prayer_n in_o the_o world_n that_o they_o may_v hear_v it_o from_o he_o and_o so_o may_v have_v his_o joy_n fulfil_v in_o they_o and_o that_o we_o may_v hear_v it_o from_o they_o and_o so_o may_v have_v his_o joy_n fulfil_v in_o we_o in_o which_o regard_n my_o brethren_n it_o be_v leave_v upon_o record_n in_o public_a in_o the_o church_n for_o ever_o that_o all_o his_o people_n may_v have_v recourse_n thereto_o on_o all_o occasion_n for_o their_o comfort_n and_o therefore_o when_o we_o be_v in_o any_o trouble_n when_o sorrow_n seize_v deep_a outward_a circumstance_n to_o a_o place_n or_o to_o a_o posture_n as_o the_o jew_n of_o old_a be_v and_o yet_o there_o shall_v be_v due_a consideration_n have_v not_o only_o of_o the_o matter_n but_o even_o of_o the_o circumstance_n etc._n etc._n and_o that_o especial_o upon_o these_o two_o ground_n for_o these_o outward_a circumstance_n may_v in_o case_n promote_v the_o spiritual_a service_n reason_n 1_o the_o very_a gesture_n or_o the_o utterance_n of_o a_o prayer_n may_v help_v sometime_o to_o raise_v and_o quicken_v the_o affection_n which_o be_v the_o life_n and_o soul_n of_o prayer_n our_o heart_n be_v natural_o dead_a and_o stupid_a and_o profane_a and_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o all_o good_a outward_a help_n to_o stir_v up_o zeal_n and_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n in_o they_o and_o to_o this_o end_n they_o have_v be_v use_v by_o the_o saint_n in_o scripture_n and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o their_o public_a but_o even_o in_o their_o private_a and_o their_o secret_a prayer_n when_o their_o submiss_a and_o humble_a gesture_n can_v have_v no_o influence_n upon_o other_o man_n and_o consequent_o have_v no_o other_o use_n but_o to_o help_v their_o own_o heart_n as_o daniel_n be_v exact_a in_o this_o even_o in_o his_o chamber_n and_o it_o be_v careful_o record_v dan._n 6.10_o he_o kneel_v upon_o his_o knee_n three_o time_n a_o day_n and_o pray_v he_o pray_v three_o time_n spiritual_a service_n they_o testify_v the_o sorrow_n the_o humility_n the_o affection_n and_o the_o devotion_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o reverence_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o in_o my_o text_n our_o saviour_n lift_v up_o his_o eye_n to_o heaven_n discover_v where_o his_o heart_n be_v and_o therefore_o humble_a gesture_n be_v especial_o require_v in_o public_a worship_n because_o god_n will_v be_v honour_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o other_o yea_o they_o be_v sometime_o put_v for_o all_o his_o service_n rom._n 14.11_o as_o i_o live_v say_v the_o lord_n every_o knee_n shall_v bow_v to_o i_o and_o see_v hypocrite_n in_o matter_n of_o the_o worship_n and_o the_o service_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v always_o ready_a to_o pretend_v they_o have_v as_o good_a heart_n as_o the_o very_o best_a therefore_o the_o lord_n be_v wont_a to_o call_v so_o often_o and_o so_o earnest_o for_o the_o external_a service_n of_o the_o body_n and_o that_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o old_a it_o serve_v to_o let_v they_o see_v their_o error_n and_o mistake_v who_o utter_o neglect_v such_o thing_n as_o these_o be_v who_o take_v no_o notice_n of_o their_o outward_a carriage_n in_o such_o holy_a duty_n but_o rather_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o thing_n below_o the_o observation_n of_o a_o christian_a who_o shall_v be_v whole_o and_o entire_o take_v up_o with_o their_o spiritual_a service_n and_o yet_o as_o you_o have_v hear_v the_o holy-ghost_n take_v notice_n of_o a_o gesture_n a_o cast_n of_o the_o eye_n in_o prayer_n and_o set_v it_o down_o in_o white_a and_o black_a we_o need_v not_o doubt_n for_o our_o information_n i_o must_v confess_v the_o great_a defect_n be_v on_o the_o other_o side_n man_n be_v employ_v so_o much_o about_o the_o form_n the_o surface_n and_o the_o outside_n of_o religious_a duty_n many_o time_n that_o they_o neglect_v the_o main_a business_n their_o thought_n be_v exercise_v so_o far_o about_o the_o gesture_n of_o their_o body_n the_o composure_n of_o their_o word_n the_o frame_n of_o their_o voice_n and_o the_o like_a especial_o in_o public_a prayer_n that_o they_o have_v no_o regard_n at_o all_o to_o the_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a service_n the_o outward_a work_n be_v infinite_o more_o easy_a and_o there_o be_v much_o more_o ostentation_n in_o it_o and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o man_n be_v whole_o take_v up_o with_o that_o which_o they_o themselves_o can_v do_v and_o be_v do_v procure_v they_o most_o applause_n from_o other_o man_n but_o yet_o their_o place_v all_o in_o form_n and_o outside_n and_o mind_v nothing_o else_o in_o holy_a duty_n do_v not_o justify_v at_o all_o our_o run_v off_o to_o the_o extreme_a upon_o the_o other_o side_n no_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o even_o circumstance_n of_o their_o prayer_n the_o gesture_n or_o the_o manner_n of_o their_o utterance_n which_o be_v considerable_a notwithstanding_o as_o i_o have_v make_v it_o plain_a enough_o and_o therefore_o to_o be_v whole_o careless_a of_o they_o be_v a_o fail_v yea_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v in_o the_o best_a of_o god_n people_n use_v 2_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o second_o place_n let_v i_o persuade_v you_o to_o think_v such_o outward_a circumstance_n worthy_a of_o your_o thought_n the_o very_a gesture_n and_o the_o utterance_n of_o your_o prayer_n let_v there_o be_v due_a author_n of_o the_o scripture_n other_o there_o be_v who_o though_o they_o do_v not_o question_v all_o the_o scripture_n yet_o they_o do_v not_o believe_v it_o all_o they_o give_v not_o absolute_a belief_n to_o every_o part_n and_o parcel_n of_o it_o and_o since_o the_o word_n have_v in_o it_o precept_n promise_n and_o threaten_n and_o there_o be_v some_o that_o question_n one_o and_o some_o another_o of_o they_o we_o will_v proceed_v with_o they_o distinct_o and_o in_o order_n 1._o some_o there_o be_v who_o do_v not_o give_v assent_n to_o the_o divine_a authority_n of_o all_o the_o and_o efficacy_n in_o they_o must_v show_v all_o good_a fidelity_n in_o the_o discharge_n and_o execution_n of_o their_o office_n but_o you_o will_v ask_v i_o how_o may_v this_o be_v do_v and_o wherein_o do_v this_o consist_v i_o will_v show_v you_o in_o a_o word_n and_o pass_v on_o to_o another_o point_n of_o observation_n the_o messenger_n of_o jesus_n christ_n if_o he_o will_v be_v well_o receive_v and_o well-approved_n must_v show_v his_o faithfulness_n especial_o two_o way_n 1._o in_o a_o active_a way_n he_o must_v show_v his_o faithfulness_n in_o two_o respect_n first_o in_o a_o once_o perceive_v that_o he_o will_v serve_v the_o word_n to_o any_o interest_n and_o make_v it_o to_o comply_v with_o any_o humour_n though_o they_o may_v like_v it_o well_o enough_o who_o humour_n and_o corruption_n he_o comply_v with_o yet_o they_o will_v never_o like_v he_o nor_o think_v the_o better_a of_o he_o but_o the_o worse_o no_o they_o will_v look_v upon_o he_o as_o a_o man_n of_o no_o fidelity_n of_o no_o conscience_n and_o so_o according_o will_n suspect_n and_o undervalue_v any_o thing_n that_o he_o deliver_v whereas_o if_o he_o deliver_v what_o he_o have_v receive_v without_o fear_n without_o favour_n and_o will_v not_o vary_v in_o the_o least_o degree_n to_o comply_v with_o any_o man_n they_o must_v take_v it_o as_o it_o come_v they_o will_v say_v of_o he_o as_o ahab_n of_o micaiah_n 1_o king_n 22.8_o i_o hate_v he_o for_o he_o prophecy_v against_o i_o still_o but_o yet_o he_o be_v a_o prophet_n of_o the_o lord_n he_o cross_v i_o and_o meet_v with_o i_o continual_o but_o yet_o i_o must_v confess_v he_o be_v a_o honest_a and_o a_o faithful_a man_n 2._o as_o he_o must_v show_v his_o faithfulness_n in_o a_o right_n and_o just_a delivery_n of_o his_o message_n so_o in_o the_o second_o place_n in_o a_o delivery_n of_o it_o too_o for_o right_a end_n conceive_v it_o for_o his_o master_n end_n and_o not_o his_o own_o to_o advance_v christ_n glory_n to_o build_v up_o christ_n church_n to_o save_v the_o soul_n of_o christ_n people_n if_o we_o will_v be_v well_o receive_v and_o entertain_v our_o hearer_n must_v have_v no_o occasion_n to_o distrust_v that_o that_o which_o we_o deliver_v though_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o right_a and_o sound_a be_v to_o satisfy_v our_o own_o passion_n or_o to_o promote_v our_o own_o end_n first_o not_o to_o satisfy_v our_o own_o passion_n they_o must_v not_o think_v that_o our_o seem_a heat_n and_o zeal_n be_v for_o ourselves_o and_o not_o for_o christ_n and_o this_o we_o must_v be_v very_o wary_a of_o in_o the_o great_a difference_n that_o be_v on_o foot_n at_o this_o time_n corruption_n will_v be_v apt_a enough_o if_o there_o be_v nothing_o else_o to_o make_v we_o sharp_a and_o bitter_a against_o those_o and_o their_o opinion_n who_o be_v it_o may_v be_v violent_a against_o we_o and_o if_o they_o apprehend_v we_o so_o we_o shall_v never_o do_v they_o good_a and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v strive_v to_o carry_v matter_n so_o that_o we_o may_v satisfy_v they_o and_o convince_v they_o that_o we_o speak_v nothing_o out_o of_o spleen_n against_o they_o and_o to_o this_o end_n make_v his_o crooked_a like_o your_o own_o 2._o if_o god_n and_o you_o agree_v not_o every_o way_n as_o you_o be_v irregular_a so_o you_o be_v undutiful_a you_o be_v his_o servant_n and_o you_o be_v his_o creature_n and_o therefore_o ought_v in_o all_o thing_n to_o be_v rule_v by_o he_o the_o master_n will_n must_v be_v the_o servant_n will_v in_o lawful_a thing_n and_o therefore_o in_o the_o we_o find_v it_o use_v for_o elect_v and_o sanctify_a and_o sometime_o for_o reprobate_a and_o unsanctified_a person_n sometime_o we_o find_v it_o take_v for_o believer_n and_o sometime_o for_o unbeliever_n as_o i_o can_v give_v you_o instance_n of_o both_o these_o and_o when_o for_o unbeliever_n sometime_o for_o those_o who_o believe_v not_o for_o the_o present_a but_o shall_v believe_v in_o after_o time_n sometime_o for_o those_o who_o
such_o ground_n and_o reason_n as_o his_o spirit_n natural_o be_v not_o likely_a to_o suggest_v because_o they_o do_v not_o any_o way_n concern_v he_o as_o a_o natural_a man_n as_o when_o upon_o the_o apprehension_n of_o some_o great_a dishonour_n that_o will_v come_v to_o god_n if_o such_o a_o thing_n shall_v be_v deny_v a_o man_n be_v much_o enlarge_v and_o quicken_v in_o his_o prayer_n yea_o when_o his_o prayer_n be_v against_o his_o natural_a desire_n when_o he_o be_v earnest_a with_o the_o lord_n in_o secret_a to_o help_v he_o to_o pluck_v out_o a_o right_a eye_n or_o to_o cut_v off_o motive_n wherein_o there_o be_v no_o self_n respect_n when_o he_o shall_v serious_o and_o sincere_o beg_v the_o lord_n to_o give_v but_o a_o little_a wealth_n a_o little_a honour_n if_o he_o perceive_v that_o more_o will_v do_v he_o spiritual_a hurt_n that_o it_o will_v puff_n he_o up_o and_o make_v he_o proud_a as_o agur_n do_v give_v i_o not_o riches_n feed_v i_o with_o food_n christ_n and_o they_o that_o be_v devoid_a of_o it_o do_v both_o pray_v for_o earthly_a blessing_n for_o there_o be_v promise_n of_o these_o as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o other_o but_o now_o the_o difference_n lie_v in_o this_o both_o aim_v not_o at_o the_o same_o end_n he_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n desire_v these_o outward_n blessing_n moderate_o with_o submission_n that_o he_o may_v serve_v god_n with_o they_o that_o he_o may_v promote_v his_o end_n that_o he_o may_v be_v the_o able_a instrument_n to_o help_v his_o church_n to_o support_v his_o people_n to_o advance_v his_o glory_n to_o appear_v for_o his_o cause_n even_o these_o desire_n of_o his_o be_v spiritual_a although_o not_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o they_o at_o least_o for_o the_o end_n of_o they_o but_o now_o my_o brethren_n on_o the_o other_o side_n he_o that_o have_v not_o christ_n spirit_n desire_v these_o outward_a blessing_n that_o he_o may_v consume_v they_o on_o his_o lust_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v jam._n 4.3_o you_o ask_v and_o receive_v not_o because_o you_o ask_v amiss_o that_o you_o may_v consume_v it_o upon_o your_o lust_n that_o you_o may_v make_v provision_n for_o the_o flesh_n with_o it_o and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v oil_n to_o nourish_v and_o to_o feed_v the_o sinful_a flame_n that_o be_v within_o you_o and_o thus_o it_o be_v my_o brethren_n with_o a_o multitude_n of_o man_n they_o pray_v to_o god_n for_o some_o thing_n to_o bestow_v upon_o their_o sensual_a appetite_n to_o serve_v their_o carnal_a turn_n to_o satisfy_v their_o brutish_a and_o voluptuous_a pleasure_n and_o desire_n they_o will_v be_v in_o place_n and_o power_n that_o they_o may_v raise_v their_o name_n and_o family_n that_o they_o may_v swell_v and_o swagger_v over_o their_o inferior_n that_o they_o may_v plague_v their_o enemy_n and_o pleasure_v those_o that_o be_v observant_a of_o they_o they_o will_v have_v wealth_n and_o riches_n in_o abundance_n that_o they_o may_v swimm_n in_o full_a delight_n and_o fare_v delicious_o every_o day_n agur_n measure_v the_o conveniency_n or_o inconveniency_n of_o his_o outward_a state_n as_o it_o will_v fit_v he_o more_o or_o less_o for_o god_n service_n not_o poverty_n lest_o i_o deny_v thou_o not_o riches_n leave_v i_o forget_v thou_o but_o these_o man_n measure_v it_o by_o nothing_o but_o their_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o so_o their_o prayer_n serve_v their_o lust_n and_o they_o will_v have_v god_n himself_o to_o serve_v they_o too_o if_o they_o can_v prevail_v with_o he_o and_o be_v such_o desire_n as_o these_o like_a to_o be_v raise_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n what_o will_v the_o spirit_n stir_v man_n up_o to_o pray_v for_o any_o thing_n to_o nourish_v and_o maintain_v the_o flesh_n the_o carnal_a part_n which_o be_v the_o spirit_n enemy_n the_o flesh_n lu_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n lu_v against_o the_o flesh_n for_o those_o two_o be_v contrary_a one_o to_o another_o and_o will_v the_o spirit_n notwithstanding_o strive_v for_o that_o which_o shall_v uphold_v and_o feed_v those_o lust_n against_o which_o the_o spirit_n lu_v believe_v it_o brethren_n they_o that_o pray_v for_o or_o she_o die_v when_o once_o the_o heart_n be_v set_v on_o any_o thing_n that_o serve_v to_o feed_v a_o sensual_a appetite_n whether_o it_o be_v the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n or_o the_o lust_n of_o the_o eye_n it_o be_v violent_o bend_v and_o it_o must_v not_o be_v deny_v 3._o you_o shall_v discover_v it_o by_o the_o effect_n i_o mean_v the_o use_n of_o those_o external_a blessing_n which_o successor_n in_o the_o church_n the_o mean_n of_o work_a love_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n i_o have_v declare_v unto_o they_o thy_o name_n and_o will_v declare_v it_o that_o the_o love_n wherewith_o thou_o have_v love_v i_o may_v be_v in_o they_o now_o be_v it_o so_o my_o brethren_n that_o the_o love_n which_o be_v in_o true_a believer_n come_v use_v 1_o from_o god_n here_o than_o not_o do_v his_o will_n his_o will_n shall_v certain_o be_v do_v upon_o you_o if_o you_o submit_v not_o here_o to_o his_o command_a will_n you_o shall_v be_v force_v to_o submit_v to_o his_o condemn_a
