if_o they_o have_v dye_v without_o repentance_n they_o have_v perish_v of_o all_o disease_n they_o be_v most_o dangerous_a that_o be_v least_o feel_v as_o a_o lethargy_n or_o dead_a palsy_n or_o the_o like_a so_o it_o be_v a_o most_o fearful_a estate_n for_o any_o man_n to_o lie_v in_o sin_n without_o the_o feel_n of_o it_o for_o â—â—at_n be_v a_o sign_n that_o the_o heart_n be_v harden_v in_o comparison_n of_o eternal_a joy_n and_o happiness_n in_o heaven_n who_o have_v not_o rather_o lead_v their_o life_n in_o misery_n here_o then_o in_o eternal_a torment_n in_o hell_n fire_n in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v well_o see_v the_o affliction_n of_o god_n child_n be_v use_v 2_o but_o light_n and_o moment_n any_o and_o last_v but_o for_o a_o few_o day_n we_o must_v learn_v that_o lesson_n which_o saint_n paul_n teach_v we_o namely_o to_o rejoice_v in_o affliction_n know_v 5.3_o rom._n 5.3_o that_o affliction_n bring_v forth_o patience_n patience_n in_o suffering_n bring_v forth_o suspect_v ourselves_o that_o we_o come_v not_o to_o perform_v these_o holy_a duty_n in_o hypocrisy_n but_o in_o truth_n of_o heart_n let_v we_o call_v ourselves_o to_o a_o reckon_n suspect_v our_o faith_n repentance_n and_o obedience_n for_o fear_v we_o deceive_v ourselves_o yea_o as_o paul_n say_v 13.5_o 1_o cor._n 13.5_o prove_v yourselves_o whether_o you_o be_v in_o the_o faith_n for_o a_o it_o a_o cloak_n of_o all_o their_o sin_n the_o evil_n and_o corruption_n not_o only_o towards_o man_n but_o towards_o god_n for_o they_o think_v that_o so_o long_o as_o they_o offer_v sacrifice_n to_o god_n and_o come_v into_o the_o temple_n and_o bring_v their_o beast_n and_o make_v some_o show_n that_o god_n be_v behold_v unto_o they_o and_o that_o he_o can_v not_o be_v angry_a with_o they_o thus_o they_o make_v the_o service_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n a_o cloak_n of_o all_o their_o evil_n and_o a_o covert_n of_o all_o their_o vile_a and_o enormous_a deal_n as_o blindness_n ignorance_n cruelty_n oppression_n covetousness_n pride_n malice_n etc._n etc._n so_o as_o if_o the_o prophet_n of_o god_n do_v reprove_v they_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o tell_v they_o oh_o sir_n you_o see_v i_o hope_v we_o bring_v our_o offering_n sacrifice_n and_o oblation_n and_o come_v daily_o to_o the_o temple_n and_o though_o we_o be_v somewhat_o ignorant_a we_o hope_v so_o long_o as_o we_o mean_v well_o and_o do_v this_o we_o hope_v god_n will_v bear_v with_o we_o &_o we_o shall_v do_v well_o enough_o 6._o je._n 7.11.12_o mat._n 6._o so_o do_v the_o people_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o long_o as_o they_o come_v to_o church_n and_o be_v no_o enemy_n of_o religion_n do_v not_o persecute_v the_o minister_n and_o professor_n 7.13_o jer._n 7.13_o they_o think_v god_n will_v not_o call_v they_o to_o account_v for_o their_o covetousness_n pride_n envy_n murder_n ignorance_n drunkenness_n unconscionable_a deal_n etc._n etc._n and_o what_o be_v this_o but_o to_o make_v the_o house_n of_o god_n a_o den_n of_o thief_n a_o company_n of_o atheist_n and_o profane_a beast_n oh_o then_o let_v we_o beware_v of_o this_o and_o take_v heed_n how_o we_o abuse_v our_o holy_a profession_n take_v heed_n that_o we_o make_v not_o religion_n and_o the_o outward_a service_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n a_o cloak_n of_o sin_n to_o bolster_v we_o up_o in_o evil_a to_o face_n out_o our_o impiety_n and_o abomination_n if_o a_o man_n shall_v get_v the_o king_n cloth_n or_o a_o nobleman_n cloth_n and_o so_o shall_v under_o the_o colour_n of_o that_o rob_fw-mi defraud_n and_o oppress_v poor_a man_n and_o do_v it_o under_o pretence_n of_o his_o master_n cloth_n how_o will_v his_o master_n be_v angry_a turn_v he_o out_o of_o his_o service_n pluck_v his_o cloth_n over_o his_o ear_n even_o so_o
will_v the_o lord_n deal_v one_o day_n with_o all_o hypocritical_a seruer_n of_o god_n who_o because_o they_o be_v such_o as_o make_v show_n of_o religion_n and_o service_n of_o god_n think_v that_o their_o profession_n may_v be_v a_o cloak_n of_o all_o their_o impiety_n i_o desire_v mercy_n and_o not_o sacrifice_n this_o be_v a_o most_o worthy_a sentence_n as_o it_o do_v appear_v in_o that_o our_o saviour_n christ_n do_v twice_o allege_v it_o in_o the_o gospel_n of_o matthew_n â—3_n mat._n 9_o â—3_n when_o christ_n keep_v company_n with_o the_o poor_a publican_n and_o sinner_n the_o one_o pardon_n and_o forbear_v another_o and_o be_v not_o over_o cruel_a and_o severe_a one_o to_o another_o so_o when_o christ_n disciple_n pluck_v the_o ear_n of_o corn_n upon_o the_o sabbath_n 12._o mat._n 12._o the_o pharisy_n be_v present_o offend_v because_o they_o break_v the_o sabbath_n but_o christ_n tell_v they_o this_o scripture_n i_o will_v have_v mercy_n and_o not_o sacrifice_v outward_a and_o external_a worship_n of_o god_n and_o all_o the_o ceremony_n of_o the_o law_n so_o now_o we_o be_v to_o come_v to_o the_o two_o latter_a word_n mercy_n and_o knowledge_n by_o which_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v the_o duty_n of_o piety_n and_o mercy_n faith_n to_o god_n and_o love_n and_o mercy_n towards_o man_n and_o here_o the_o lord_n compare_v these_o two_o together_o and_o show_v that_o he_o prefer_v faith_n piety_n and_o godliness_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o merciful_a and_o kind_a deal_n towards_o man_n before_o the_o great_a show_n which_o man_n make_v in_o the_o outward_a service_n of_o god_n true_a it_o be_v the_o lord_n will_v have_v we_o perform_v such_o part_n of_o his_o service_n &_o worship_n as_o he_o command_v in_o his_o word_n and_o such_o ceremony_n as_o he_o prescribe_v but_o he_o prefer_v faith_n obedience_n repentance_n fear_n and_o love_n of_o god_n and_o love_n &_o kindness_n and_o merciful_a deal_n unto_o man_n before_o all_o such_o sacrifice_n and_o burn_a offering_n and_o all_o other_o show_v whatsoever_o yea_o all_o this_o outward_a show_n and_o all_o our_o profession_n of_o religion_n if_o it_o be_v not_o join_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n that_o be_v with_o faith_n repentance_n and_o obedience_n and_o with_o the_o duty_n of_o love_n unto_o man_n it_o be_v but_o abomination_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n doct._n 5_o so_o then_o the_o point_n of_o doctrine_n be_v this_o that_o see_v the_o lord_n say_v i_o will_v have_v mercy_n and_o not_o sacrifice_v worship_n god_n do_v prefer_v the_o duty_n of_o love_n and_o the_o like_a all_o be_v well_o with_o they_o they_o need_v no_o more_o in_o these_o jew_n we_o may_v clear_o see_v a_o counterpane_n of_o our_o people_n and_o time_n what_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o after_o use_v 1_o so_o much_o and_o so_o long_o preach_v man_n shall_v remain_v so_o ignorant_a so_o covetous_a so_o vile_a and_o so_o sinful_a still_o be_v it_o not_o because_o most_o man_n content_v themselves_o with_o the_o outward_a service_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n why_o do_v not_o the_o mean_n that_o convert_v those_o jew_n in_o the_o begin_n of_o this_o chapter_n convert_v these_o of_o who_o the_o lord_n speak_v in_o this_o place_n sure_o the_o prophet_n give_v a_o reason_n of_o it_o in_o this_o verse_n namely_o because_o these_o jew_n think_v that_o they_o have_v goodness_n they_o no_o good_a and_o be_v not_o this_o the_o sin_n of_o our_o time_n and_o people_n note_n note_n do_v not_o most_v man_n content_v themselves_o with_o the_o outward_a service_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n to_o come_v to_o church_n to_o hear_v the_o word_n &_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o think_v then_o they_o have_v honour_v god_n high_o and_o serve_v he_o aswell_o as_o the_o best_a of_o they_o all_o and_o that_o god_n can_v require_v no_o more_o at_o their_o hand_n i_o appeal_v unto_o your_o heart_n and_o conscience_n whether_o this_o be_v not_o so_o that_o most_o do_v content_a themselves_o with_o the_o very_a outward_a action_n of_o god_n worship_n never_o look_v for_o soundness_n of_o heart_n to_o come_v in_o faith_n repentance_n and_o obedience_n oh_o then_o

that_o you_o may_v seem_v good_a with_o more_o feeling_n and_o comfort_n second_o in_o that_o the_o lord_n compare_v their_o repentance_n and_o goodness_n all_o their_o piety_n and_o service_n of_o god_n to_o a_o morning_n cloud_n and_o to_o the_o dew_n before_o the_o sun_n he_o show_v that_o their_o repentance_n be_v not_o only_o unsound_a but_o also_o uncertain_a of_o no_o continuance_n some_o
