wicked_a eye_n second_o what_o be_v the_o fruit_n and_o effect_v thereof_o the_o wicked_a eye_n be_v the_o mind_n and_o understanding_n have_v some_o light_n but_o darken_v dim_a and_o corrupt_v by_o adam_n fall_n that_o you_o may_v yet_o the_o better_a conceive_v what_o this_o wicked_a eye_n be_v you_o must_v know_v that_o the_o mind_n be_v corrupt_v two_o way_n and_o in_o two_o respect_n first_o it_o have_v lose_v the_o gift_n of_o discern_v and_o judge_v and_o in_o this_o respect_n it_o be_v a_o evil_a eye_n and_o mistake_v one_o thing_n for_o a_o other_o good_a for_o evil_n and_o evil_a for_o good_a and_o that_o the_o mind_n have_v lose_v the_o gift_n of_o discern_v in_o many_o thing_n appear_v thus_o many_o of_o we_o by_o nature_n know_v not_o god_n as_o we_o ought_v nor_o ourselves_o touch_v god_n it_o appear_v by_o diverse_a reason_n we_o know_v natural_o that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n yet_o we_o can_v acknowledge_v the_o presence_n of_o god_n man_n natural_o when_o they_o sin_n fear_v not_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n and_o that_o prove_v plain_o that_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o mind_n be_v a_o evil_a eye_n though_o by_o nature_n we_o know_v that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n yet_o we_o acknowledge_v not_o his_o particular_a providence_n we_o can_v discern_v it_o as_o we_o shall_v and_o it_o appear_v in_o this_o that_o man_n natural_o trust_v man_n before_o god_n the_o creature_n above_o the_o creator_n which_o show_v that_o we_o do_v not_o acknowledge_v a_o particular_a presence_n a_o for_o if_o we_o do_v we_o will_v rather_o distrust_v man_n and_o trust_v god_n though_o the_o conscience_n tell_v a_o man_n of_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n yet_o the_o mind_n do_v sooth_n and_o flatter_v we_o natural_o and_o tell_v we_o we_o shall_v escape_v without_o due_a punishment_n and_o so_o deny_v god_n justice_n we_o know_v that_o god_n must_v be_v worship_v yet_o the_o mind_n can_v discern_v &_o judge_v of_o it_o
by_o themselves_o and_o to_o themselves_o for_o example_n sake_n it_o be_v the_o manner_n of_o wise_a man_n to_o prescribe_v how_o they_o will_v be_v save_v they_o take_v it_o for_o a_o small_a matter_n to_o come_v to_o salvation_n if_o they_o can_v but_o make_v a_o prayer_n at_o the_o end_n of_o their_o life_n i_o speak_v of_o they_o which_o be_v not_o guide_v by_o the_o word_n some_o by_o their_o work_n and_o other_o by_o their_o faith_n and_o all_o be_v one_o for_o they_o understand_v nothing_o by_o faith_n but_o their_o good_a intent_n and_o well_o meaning_n natural_o and_o common_o man_n prescribe_v to_o themselves_o how_o they_o will_v be_v save_v &_o how_o they_o will_v worship_v god_n and_o in_o use_v what_o mean_v they_o will_v live_v and_o die_v but_o they_o do_v ill_o wherefore_o in_o a_o word_n be_v not_o wise_a to_o thyself_o in_o this_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o thy_o salvation_n let_v god_n be_v wise_a be_v thou_o a_o fool_n prescribe_v no_o religion_n to_o in_o the_o mind_n it_o be_v further_a say_v that_o if_o this_o light_n be_v darkness_n it_o be_v only_o bury_v so_o as_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o use_n of_o it_o but_o it_o can_v be_v quite_o put_v out_o &_o extinguish_v some_o light_n of_o nature_n be_v remain_v in_o the_o most_o wicked_a man_n because_o conscience_n remain_v now_o here_o it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v none_o but_o darkness_n bury_v what_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n be_v turn_v into_o darkness_n the_o cause_n be_v in_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n of_o man_n the_o desire_n and_o lust_n of_o the_o heart_n it_o be_v sin_n that_o put_v out_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n actual_a sin_n the_o will_n and_o affection_n make_v man_n to_o sin_n against_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n and_o against_o conscience_n and_o so_o put_v out_o both_o and_o bury_v they_o this_o make_v a_o man_n not_o to_o know_v that_o which_o by_o nature_n he_o may_v know_v now_o see_v the_o fruit_n of_o it_o rom._n 1._o in_o most_o horrible_a and_o brutish_a sin_n upon_o the_o blind_a mind_n and_o reprobate_a sense_n the_o consideration_n of_o this_o point_n that_o the_o understanding_n may_v be_v quite_o bury_v by_o actual_a sin_n teach_v we_o to_o enter_v into_o a_o examination_n of_o ourselves_o we_o have_v in_o we_o even_o the_o best_a of_o we_o all_o wretched_a devilish_a and_o damnable_a desire_n such_o as_o will_v put_v out_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n in_o the_o understanding_n this_o teach_v we_o to_o be_v vile_a in_o our_o own_o eye_n who_o have_v such_o vile_a heart_n that_o they_o can_v put_v out_o that_o light_n which_o adam_n fall_n do_v not_o second_o in_o that_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n blind_v the_o mind_n dazzle_v and_o dim_v the_o light_n of_o our_o understanding_n we_o learn_v to_o look_v to_o these_o principal_o that_o they_o be_v mortify_v and_o bring_v in_o subjection_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o god_n commandment_n for_o now_o the_o case_n be_v alter_v before_o the_o fall_n the_o mind_n rule_v the_o will_n but_o now_o the_o will_n overrule_v the_o mind_n therefore_o a_o special_a regard_n must_v be_v have_v of_o this_o we_o must_v renounce_v our_o own_o will_n and_o have_v our_o eye_n enlighten_v and_o so_o see_v the_o right_a way_n to_o eternal_a life_n for_o the_o want_n of_o this_o discern_a be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o disorder_n and_o particular_o of_o this_o disorder_n in_o prefer_v temporal_a and_o earthly_a thing_n before_o eternal_a and_o heavenly_a and_o by_o this_o you_o may_v walk_v with_o comfort_n and_o peace_n of_o conscience_n the_o way_n to_o life_n eternal_a whereas_o without_o it_o you_o wander_v in_o darkness_n all_o the_o day_n of_o your_o life_n 24._o no_o man_n can_v serve_v two_o master_n for_o either_o he_o shall_v hate_v the_o one_o and_o love_n the_o other_o or_o else_o he_o shall_v lean_v to_o the_o one_o and_o despise_v the_o other_o you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o mammon_n or_o riches_n we_o have_v hear_v of_o two_o commandment_n of_o christ_n first_o negative_a in_o the_o 19_o verse_n the_o second_o affirmative_a in_o the_o 20._o verse_n and_o afterward_o a_o objection_n answer_v in_o the_o 22._o verse_n now_o he_o remove_v another_o impediment_n the_o former_a objection_n be_v this_o if_o our_o treasure_n must_v be_v lay_v up_o in_o heaven_n and_o not_o here_o on_o earth_n it_o be_v marvel_n that_o so_o many_o lie_v up_o treasure_n here_o and_o not_o in_o heaven_n the_o answer_n hereof_o be_v they_o have_v either_o a_o blind_a eye_n or_o a_o evil_a eye_n and_o so_o want_v the_o gift_n of_o discern_v now_o in_o this_o verse_n he_o meet_v with_o a_o other_o objection_n which_o the_o carnal_a wisdom_n of_o man_n make_v common_o and_o have_v ever_o make_v against_o these_o commandment_n and_o it_o be_v thus_o why_o may_v we_o not_o love_n and_o serve_v god_n and_o serve_v mammon_n too_o some_o man_n flatter_v and_o persuade_v themselves_o that_o they_o may_v serve_v god_n &_o yet_o set_v their_o heart_n to_o seek_v riches_n too_o and_o therefore_o they_o think_v that_o they_o may_v seek_v earthly_a riches_n &_o heavenly_a riches_n both_o together_o and_o that_o one_o do_v not_o hinder_v a_o other_o but_o that_o one_o may_v have_v both_o treasure_n in_o earth_n and_o treasure_n in_o heaven_n here_o therefore_o christ_n meet_v with_o this_o carnal_a conceit_n of_o natural_a man_n and_o prove_v it_o to_o be_v impossible_a that_o one_o man_n shall_v practice_v both_o these_o thus_o you_o see_v how_o this_o verse_n do_v depend_v on_o the_o former_a and_o this_o will_v the_o better_o appear_v if_o we_o seek_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o word_n no_o man_n can_v serve_v two_o master_n etc._n etc._n it_o may_v seem_v at_o the_o first_o to_o be_v otherwise_o for_o both_o in_o reason_n and_o also_o by_o experience_n one_o servant_n may_v serve_v two_o diverse_a master_n as_o we_o see_v one_o factor_n may_v and_o do_v well_o serve_v diveser_fw-ge merchant_n therefore_o how_o can_v this_o be_v that_o christ_n say_v here_o some_o answer_n it_o thus_o that_o the_o word_n must_v be_v conceive_v after_o this_o manner_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v two_o diverse_a or_o contrary_a master_n as_o for_o example_n when_o one_o shall_v say_v come_v and_o a_o other_o shall_v say_v come_v not_o when_o two_o master_n be_v thus_o contrary_a &_o diverse_a in_o their_o mind_n and_o will_n one_o servant_n can_v serve_v both_o and_o so_o these_o word_n carry_v a_o holy_a truth_n but_o this_o clause_n of_o diverse_a and_o contrary_a be_v not_o express_v therefore_o i_o say_v further_o that_o this_o sentence_n be_v a_o common_a proverb_n among_o they_o now_o in_o a_o proverb_n if_o it_o be_v usual_o or_o general_o true_a though_o it_o hold_v not_o always_o if_o it_o have_v effect_v ordinary_o it_o be_v enough_o as_o no_o prophet_n be_v honour_v in_o his_o own_o country_n that_o be_v usual_o and_o common_o it_o be_v so_o so_o this_o proverb_n be_v true_a ordinary_o and_o thus_o this_o sentence_n must_v be_v understand_v as_o a_o familiar_a proverb_n usual_a and_o common_a among_o the_o jew_n which_o christ_n take_v for_o the_o ground_n of_o his_o speech_n now_o it_o follow_v for_o either_o he_o shall_v hate_v the_o one_o that_o be_v as_o he_o be_v a_o master_n or_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o commandment_n and_o he_o shall_v love_v the_o other_o in_o respect_n of_o his_o commandment_n in_o that_o he_o do_v embrace_v it_o and_o perform_v it_o or_o else_o he_o shall_v lean_v to_o the_o one_o this_n be_v a_o illustration_n of_o the_o former_a word_n for_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v how_o shall_v he_o be_v know_v to_o love_n or_o hate_v they_o the_o answer_n be_v thus_o love_n will_v cleave_v to_o the_o one_o and_o contemn_v the_o other_o that_o be_v a_o servant_n be_v know_v to_o love_v his_o master_n in_o his_o commandment_n first_o if_o he_o cleave_v unto_o he_o second_o if_o he_o give_v himself_o as_o a_o servant_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o commandment_n and_o he_o will_v despise_v the_o other_o that_o be_v he_o will_v neglect_v his_o commandment_n thus_o he_o testify_v his_o love_n or_o hatred_n by_o omit_v and_o neglect_v or_o by_o perform_v and_o practise_v the_o commandment_n enjoin_v he_o now_o the_o word_n that_o follow_v you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o mammon_n be_v the_o application_n of_o the_o argument_n you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o riches_n treasure_n profit_n gain_n a_o man_n can_v serve_v god_n and_o give_v himself_o to_o get_v and_o lay_v up_o riches_n it_o be_v not_o say_v you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o have_v riches_n for_o abraham_n joseph_n &_o job_n serve_v god_n and_o yet_o have_v riches_n but_o thus_o you_o can_v serve_v god_n &_o serve_v riches_n that_o be_v give_v yourselves_o to_o seek_v they_o and_o set_v your_o heart_n upon_o they_o thus_o the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n be_v plain_a and_o now_o the_o scope_n of_o the_o word_n will_v the_o better_o appear_v the_o objection_n be_v this_o why_o may_v we_o not_o do_v both_o viz._n lay_v up_o treasure_n in_o heaven_n and_o in_o earth_n the_o answer_n be_v no_o man_n can_v serve_v two_o master_n but_o god_n and_o mammon_n be_v two_o master_n therefore_o you_o can_v serve_v both_o these_o the_o proposition_n be_v confirm_v by_o a_o reason_n which_o be_v add_v and_o thus_o you_o see_v the_o
