better_a to_o have_v a_o small_a portion_n of_o riches_n with_o moderate_a care_n and_o travail_n then_o to_o have_v great_a abundance_n with_o toil_n and_o vexation_n of_o spirit_n and_o that_o be_v very_o true_a and_o then_o be_v it_o set_v down_o as_o the_o mean_a between_o the_o slothful_a and_o the_o miserable_a drudge_n speak_v of_o next_o or_o else_o he_o speak_v in_o the_o person_n of_o the_o slothful_a show_v how_o he_o persuade_v himself_o unto_o idleness_n that_o he_o have_v rather_o fare_v thin_o and_o take_v his_o ease_n then_o to_o weary_v himself_o with_o labour_n for_o to_o get_v riches_n it_o be_v a_o true_a say_n when_o it_o be_v apply_v against_o a_o over_o greedy_a desire_n or_o riches_n yet_o be_v it_o a_o bad_a reason_n as_o the_o sluggard_n use_v it_o to_o his_o purpose_n for_o he_o carry_v himself_o by_o it_o not_o unto_o moderate_a care_n and_o travail_v to_o provide_v thing_n necessary_a but_o in_o deed_n into_o idleness_n and_o beggeris_fw-la he_o say_v one_o handful_n that_o be_v a_o little_a be_v better_o with_o quiet_a rest_n than_o two_o handful_n with_o labour_n but_o he_o have_v not_o that_o one_o handful_n at_o his_o will_n for_o the_o sluggard_n lu_v and_o have_v nothing_o prou._n 6._o let_v it_o not_o seem_v strange_a that_o the_o idle_a do_v abuse_v a_o true_a say_n to_o colour_v their_o lazine_n you_o shall_v find_v it_o so_o in_o other_o vice_n the_o prodigal_a ruffian_n behold_v the_o covetbus_n niggard_n and_o what_o say_v he_o there_o be_v a_o miserable_a caitiff_n he_o make_v his_o money_n his_o god_n i_o will_v never_o say_v he_o be_v a_o slave_n to_o my_o purse_n i_o will_v make_v gold_n my_o servant_n andiso_n he_o pour_v forth_o so_o long_o as_o he_o have_v any_o and_o that_o riotous_o where_o there_o be_v no_o need_n the_o coustous_a man_n look_v upon_o he_o o_o say_v he_o yonder_o beaâ—â—_n follo_o w_v his_o pleasure_n he_o be_v a_o unthrist_n he_o be_v worse_a than_o a_o infidel_n say_v the_o scripture_n which_o provide_v not_o for_o his_o family_n thus_o do_v man_n with_o true_a sentence_n seek_v to_o colour_v their_o sin_n and_o be_v carry_v into_o extremity_n and_o so_o do_v the_o idle_a fool_n here_o he_o see_v man_n labour_n and_o take_v pain_n for_o their_o sustenance_n and_o to_o provide_v somewhat_o for_o their_o child_n o_o think_v he_o these_o be_v foolish_a man_n they_o vex_v &_o weary_v themselves_o i_o have_v rather_o have_v a_o cup_n of_o beer_n and_o a_o morsel_n of_o bread_n with_o ease_n then_o to_o have_v all_o their_o good_a cheer_n with_o the_o pain_n which_o they_o take_v this_o no_o doubt_n be_v a_o sweet_a reason_n unto_o flesh_n and_o blood_n which_o shun_v labour_n and_o be_v prone_a unto_o idleness_n and_o lust_n it_o cause_v thousand_o to_o seek_v easy_a occupation_n brethren_n withstand_v this_o temptation_n remember_v that_o god_n have_v lay_v upon_o every_o man_n that_o he_o shall_v travail_v careful_o in_o his_o vocation_n as_o no_o man_n ought_v to_o set_v his_o heart_n upon_o riches_n so_o ought_v all_o to_o beware_v of_o slothfulness_n for_o it_o be_v a_o folly_n that_o bring_v great_a calamity_n in_o the_o end_n thus_o have_v etc._n he_o describe_v such_o a_o man_n as_o punish_v himself_o with_o extreme_a care_n and_o labour_n to_o heap_v up_o riches_n and_o can_v never_o have_v his_o eye_n satisfy_v yea_o such_o a_o one_o as_o be_v a_o niggard_n to_o his_o own_o belly_n and_o do_v even_o grudge_v to_o bestow_v any_o good_a thing_n upon_o himself_o when_o a_o man_n have_v a_o wife_n and_o child_n brethren_n or_o kindred_n there_o be_v some_o bond_n of_o natural_a affection_n which_o may_v move_v he_o to_o lay_v up_o some_o what_o to_o geve_v unto_o they_o when_o it_o be_v so_o there_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o just_a excuse_n as_o in_o deed_n it_o be_v commendable_a where_o measure_n be_v keep_v but_o this_o be_v to_o be_v wonder_v at_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v so_o cruel_a a_o sickness_n in_o our_o nature_n that_o a_o man_n be_v alone_o have_v no_o son_n nor_o any_o kindred_n to_o provide_v for_o be_v yet_o so_o insatiable_a that_o he_o can_v never_o think_v he_o have_v enough_o but_o do_v continual_o whip_v and_o torment_v himself_o with_o it_o thought_n and_o sorrowful_a care_n and_o with_o pain_n and_o niggardly_a pinch_n he_o do_v also_o geve_v we_o to_o understand_v how_o blind_a and_o foolish_a this_o man_n be_v for_o he_o have_v not_o the_o wisdom_n to_o think_v in_o himself_o for_o who_o do_v i_o toil_n and_o defraud_v my_o soul_n of_o good_a if_o a_o man_n can_v but_o reason_n thus_o in_o his_o heart_n i_o have_v plenty_n of_o riches_n i_o have_v no_o child_n i_o have_v no_o near_a kinsman_n for_o who_o do_v i_o torment_v myself_o with_o care_n to_o get_v riches_n declare_v it_o choose_v such_o a_o person_n to_o set_v it_o forth_o in_o as_o in_o who_o the_o disease_n be_v break_v forth_o and_o have_v nothing_o to_o cover_v it_o shall_v we_o think_v that_o to_o want_v child_n and_o kindred_n do_v breed_v this_o vile_a malady_n nay_o that_o do_v but_o detect_v it_o as_o the_o world_n do_v swarm_v full_a of_o idle_a fool_n so_o be_v it_o certain_a that_o there_o be_v thousand_o of_o these_o miserable_a hard_a man_n which_o moil_n in_o the_o world_n as_o base_a drudge_n to_o get_v and_o heap_v up_o riches_n for_o their_o child_n which_o if_o they_o have_v no_o child_n yet_o their_o disease_n will_v remain_v with_o they_o he_o say_v this_o be_v vanity_n and_o this_o be_v a_o evil_a affliction_n and_o doubtless_o who_o
because_o it_o be_v not_o subject_a unto_o the_o law_n of_o god_n neither_o in_o deed_n can_v be_v rom._n 8._o god_n do_v destroy_v the_o wisdom_n 8._o of_o this_o world_n 1._o cor._n 1._o he_o have_v give_v 1._o christ_n to_o be_v our_o wisdom_n and_o in_o he_o be_v all_o the_o treasure_n of_o wisdom_n &_o knowledge_n col._n 1._o his_o doctrine_n destrole_v that_o 1._o wherein_o the_o wise_a do_v most_o glory_n and_o therefore_o they_o do_v account_v it_o most_o absurd_a few_o such_o wise_a man_n be_v call_v to_o be_v partaker_n of_o god_n glory_n 1._o cor._n 1._o they_o follow_v the_o 1._o world_n they_o heap_v up_o riches_n they_o seek_v countenance_n and_o glory_n moreover_o we_o must_v beware_v that_o we_o do_v not_o misunderstand_v solomon_n in_o this_o place_n when_o he_o do_v speak_v of_o wisdom_n compare_v she_o to_o the_o light_n &_o to_o the_o eye_n in_o the_o head_n we_o may_v not_o judge_v that_o he_o do_v speak_v this_o of_o craft_n and_o subtlety_n but_o of_o such_o knowledge_n as_o be_v good_a in_o itself_o and_o in_o the_o right_a use_n do_v bring_v commodity_n now_o a_o day_n though_o therebe_a few_o wise_a man_n for_o it_o be_v attain_v with_o great_a &_o long_a travail_n yet_o there_o be_v many_o that_o think_v themselves_o wise_a and_o be_v offend_v if_o man_n do_v not_o so_o deem_v they_o when_o as_o in_o deed_n the_o great_a part_n of_o their_o wisdom_n do_v rest_n in_o a_o naughty_a dissemble_a craftiness_n and_o falsehood_n they_o have_v no_o skill_n in_o good_a science_n and_o yet_o because_o they_o can_v with_o subtle_a shift_n and_o very_a cozen_a trick_n over_o reach_v other_o they_o glory_v much_o and_o take_v themselves_o to_o be_v the_o only_a politike_n of_o the_o world_n these_o man_n be_v none_o of_o those_o of_o who_o he_o speak_v when_o he_o say_v the_o wise_a man_n eye_n be_v in_o his_o head_n this_o kind_n of_o skill_n be_v get_v without_o sore_a travail_n and_o sorrow_n it_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n for_o man_n corrupt_a nature_n to_o put_v in_o practice_v this_o devilish_a art_n who_o can_v not_o fain_o lie_v and_o dissemble_v well_o these_o be_v to_o be_v put_v out_o of_o the_o number_n and_o send_v among_o the_o fool_n lest_o they_o may_v glory_v and_o say_v we_o be_v the_o man_n of_o who_o solomon_n do_v speak_v we_o have_v our_o eye_n in_o our_o head_n no_o no_o your_o subtle_a wiliness_n be_v oftentimes_o a_o snare_n or_o a_o net_n a_o pit_n or_o a_o trap_n to_o catch_v yourselves_o he_o catch_v the_o wise_a in_o their_o craftiness_n 1._o 4._o cor._n 4._o moreover_o we_o may_v learn_v this_o in_o continual_a experience_n that_o a_o man_n who_o policy_n be_v craft_n be_v suspect_v in_o all_o his_o do_n and_o think_v to_o dissemble_v even_o when_o he_o mean_v simple_o and_o without_o fraud_n away_o than_o all_o dissemble_a and_o false_a not_o wise_a man_n but_o fool_n you_o will_v reply_v that_o there_o be_v such_o deep_a craft_n and_o dissimulation_n now_o practise_v in_o the_o world_n that_o unless_o a_o man_n do_v meet_v with_o it_o with_o the_o like_a he_o shall_v never_o go_v through_o for_o some_o be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o say_v that_o he_o which_o will_v live_v in_o these_o day_n must_v dissemble_v and_o use_v craft_n for_o private_a affair_n and_o for_o public_a business_n in_o government_n of_o commonwelth_n if_o a_o man_n do_v not_o use_v craft_n if_o he_o do_v not_o fain_o and_o dissemble_v he_o be_v make_v a_o fool_n he_o must_v study_v with_o subtlety_n to_o repel_v subtlety_n and_o so_o fashion_v himself_o to_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o world_n alas_o be_v wisdom_n become_v so_o weak_a that_o she_o can_v defend_v herself_o against_o falsehood_n certain_o there_o be_v no_o false_a pack_v in_o the_o world_n but_o wisdom_n be_v able_a both_o to_o espy_v it_o and_o to_o encounter_v it_o make_v a_o difference_n therefore_o my_o brethren_n béetwixt_n these_o sort_n of_o man_n count_v not_o the_o wisdom_n of_o this_o world_n to_o be_v fraud_n and_o guile_n no_o it_o be_v simple_a and_o plain_a the_o other_o be_v but_o the_o abuse_n thereof_o thus_o far_o have_v we_o see_v what_o solomon_n find_v in_o pleasure_n and_o wisdom_n join_v together_o and_o in_o all_o his_o royal_a &_o magnifical_a work_n which_o serve_v for_o honour_n and_o delight_n there_o do_v remain_v the_o reason_n which_o he_o bring_v to_o prove_v that_o not_o excellent_a and_o magnifical_a work_n which_o serve_v for_o either_o of_o they_o we_o have_v also_o hear_v what_o profit_n he_o find_v this_o way_n now_o come_v he_o to_o show_v by_o reason_n why_o yet_o all_o be_v vanity_n and_o first_o for_o wisdom_n it_o have_v profit_n in_o it_o above_o
foolish_a and_o noisome_a lust_n which_o drown_v man_n in_o destruction_n &_o perdition_n for_o the_o love_n of_o money_n be_v the_o root_n of_o all_o evil_a which_o while_o some_o have_v lust_v after_o they_o have_v err_v from_o the_o faith_n and_o have_v pierce_v themselves_o through_o with_o many_o sorrow_n i_o say_v if_o a_o man_n be_v thorough_o persuade_v in_o his_o hart_n that_o any_o good_a to_o remain_v of_o their_o worldly_a travail_n for_o if_o man_n do_v this_o they_o can_v not_o be_v so_o blind_v with_o a_o vain_a hope_n and_o carry_v away_o as_o if_o the_o commodity_n be_v incomparable_a which_o they_o shall_v reap_v by_o their_o labour_n man_n be_v blind_a herein_o by_o nature_n and_o the_o devil_n do_v blindfold_v they_o he_o will_v not_o let_v they_o see_v that_o which_o make_v solomon_n turn_v away_o and_o make_v his_o heart_n despair_n of_o his_o labour_n and_o to_o see_v what_o be_v other_o man_n work_n in_o comparison_n of_o he_o he_o do_v as_o it_o be_v fish_n in_o the_o main_a sea_n and_o they_o in_o little_a ditch_n if_o his_o net_n come_v up_o emty_n how_o then_o touch_v this_o matter_n he_o have_v hitherto_o speak_v of_o himself_o now_o he_o do_v amplify_v it_o by_o a_o kind_n of_o comparison_n it_o be_v take_v from_o the_o mean_a sort_n of_o man_n there_o be_v none_o of_o they_o but_o if_o he_o have_v labour_v in_o wisdom_n knowledge_n and_o equity_n but_o it_o may_v gréeve_v he_o that_o he_o must_v leave_v it_o to_o another_o man_n which_o have_v not_o travayl_v therein_o for_o his_o portion_n this_o he_o say_v be_v vanity_n and_o a_o great_a evil_n for_o by_o this_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o one_o man_n travail_v and_o another_o receive_v all_o the_o profit_n and_o commodity_n the_o father_n to_o make_v his_o son_n rich_a so_o turmoyl_v and_o pyne_v himself_o that_o he_o have_v no_o pleasure_n of_o his_o life_n the_o son_n when_o he_o be_v a_o father_n do_v the_o like_a for_o his_o child_n and_o so_o every_o one_o join_v grief_n with_o man_n travail_n for_o he_o add_v in_o the_o next_o word_n that_o all_o his_o day_n be_v sorrow_n and_o his_o travail_n grief_n his_o heart_n also_o rest_v not_o in_o the_o night_n he_o do_v in_o few_o word_n paint_v out_o a_o miserable_a condition_n of_o such_o as_o be_v worldling_n and_o greedy_a of_o gain_n a_o covetous_a man_n have_v torture_n and_o sorrow_n some_o have_v lust_v after_o they_o have_v err_v from_o the_o faith_n and_o pierce_v themselves_o through_o with_o many_o sorrow_n but_o this_o which_o he_o add_v last_o go_v beyond_o all_o that_o the_o heart_n do_v not_o lie_v down_o or_o rest_n in_o the_o night_n the_o night_n be_v make_v for_o rest_n when_o man_n have_v on_o the_o day_n time_n travail_v and_o weary_a themselves_o the_o body_n can_v endure_v without_o rest_n now_o when_o that_o be_v lay_v down_o the_o heart_n or_o mind_n do_v not_o lie_v down_o but_o walk_v about_o all_o the_o night_n long_o it_o be_v the_o chéef_n part_n of_o man_n but_o in_o this_o respect_n in_o worse_a case_n than_o the_o body_n that_o it_o walk_v all_o about_o and_o take_v no_o rest_n in_o the_o night_n in_o the_o day_n time_n it_o be_v busy_v and_o set_v the_o body_n a_o work_n if_o the_o body_n can_v hold_v out_o it_o will_v also_o and_o never_o rest_n but_o it_o can_v and_o therefore_o in_o the_o night_n the_o heart_n do_v wander_v and_o follow_v the_o business_n alone_o here_o be_v great_a instruction_n for_o covetous_a ambitious_a worldling_n if_o they_o may_v have_v their_o eye_n open_v certain_o they_o be_v stark_a fole_n which_o covet_v to_o be_v rich_a if_o they_o be_v not_o blind_a as_o stone_n they_o must_v needs_o feel_v that_o which_o he_o utter_v here_o &_o have_v these_o thought_n in_o themselves_o i_o desire_v and_o i_o labour_n to_o gather_v riches_n all_o my_o labour_n be_v full_a of_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n i_o have_v such_o hindrance_n and_o loss_n &_o meet_v with_o so_o many_o cross_a matter_n that_o it_o vex_v and_o disqui_v my_o heart_n i_o have_v such_o care_n to_o increase_v and_o keep_v that_o which_o i_o have_v that_o my_o hart_n rest_v not_o in_o y_z e_z night_n i_o have_v so_o come_v by_o my_o own_o but_o why_o do_v i_o go_v about_o to_o reckon_v up_o all_o particular_n a_o man_n be_v almost_o as_o good_a take_v upon_o he_o to_o number_v the_o star_n my_o sorrow_n and_o care_n be_v infinite_a i_o dream_v of_o thief_n i_o be_o trouble_v in_o my_o sleep_n with_o this_o and_o that_o business_n i_o perceive_v that_o my_o hart_n never_o lie_v down_o never_o take_v any_o rest_n but_o when_o my_o body_n be_v a_o sleep_n that_o walk_v about_o in_o the_o morning_n my_o body_n be_v refresh_v i_o be_o carry_v abroad_o again_o so_o long_o as_o i_o be_o able_a to_o endure_v my_o sorrow_n do_v last_v continual_o and_o have_v no_o end_n i_o be_o a_o nightwalker_n what_o shall_v i_o get_v when_o i_o have_v labour_v and_o heap_v up_o all_o that_o i_o can_v another_o which_o have_v not_o travayl_v therein_o must_v have_v my_o portion_n i_o have_v deal_v wise_o to_o get_v riches_n which_o i_o leave_v behind_o i_o in_o great_a plenty_n it_o may_v be_v they_o shall_v come_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o fool_n which_o will_v scatter_v they_o abroad_o what_o a_o wretched_a fool_n be_o i_o thus_o to_o torment_fw-mi and_o disquiet_v myself_o in_o vain_a grief_n and_o care_n and_o sorrow_n &_o toil_v night_n and_o day_n and_o no_o good_a remain_n i_o wish_v it_o from_o the_o very_a bottom_n of_o my_o hart_n and_o i_o do_v instant_o beg_v it_o of_o god_n that_o man_n eye_n may_v be_v open_v to_o see_v clear_a in_o this_o point_n &_o that_o they_o will_v deep_o meditate_v upon_o this_o doctrine_n for_o i_o do_v not_o hope_v to_o see_v any_o great_a fruit_n of_o the_o gospel_n so_o long_o as_o man_n be_v so_o greedy_a of_o this_o world_n you_o shall_v see_v hot_a professor_n of_o god_n word_n both_o of_o precher_n and_o people_n which_o in_o few_o year_n set_v their_o heart_n upon_o riches_n become_v cold_a enough_o alas_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a they_o shall_v continue_v upright_o unless_o we_o will_v imagine_v that_o the_o scripture_n be_v not_o true_a which_o say_v you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o riches_n and_o here_o again_o geve_v i_o leave_v to_o reason_v a_o little_a by_o comparison_n king_n solomon_n hate_v life_n hate_v all_o his_o work_n turn_v away_o his_o heart_n to_o make_v it_o despair_v of_o his_o travail_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o riches_n and_o honour_n lawful_o get_v cry_v out_o that_o all_o be_v vanity_n sorrow_n and_o grief_n be_v to_o be_v esteem_v from_o our_o disposition_n how_o rude_a how_o unreverent_a &_o how_o unmannerly_a our_o heart_n be_v when_o we_o speak_v to_o the_o lord_n we_o door_n not_o in_o such_o sort_n speak_v unto_o a_o earthly_a prince_n no_o noâ—_n to_o a_o man_n of_o mean_a worship_n but_o to_o avoid_v this_o rudeness_n and_o to_o come_v with_o due_a reverence_n yea_o even_o with_o fear_n and_o
