become_v careless_a of_o reform_v evil_n god_n smite_v the_o whole_a society_n for_o the_o sin_n now_o commit_v by_o all_o and_o lament_v by_o none_o and_o then_o he_o that_o mourn_v not_o must_v himself_o also_o smart_a for_o company_n shall_v we_o not_o seek_v to_o stop_v the_o way_n against_o all_o and_o each_o of_o these_o evil_n by_o entrench_v ourselves_o as_o it_o be_v within_o these_o river_n of_o water_n and_o so_o brethren_n you_o have_v reason_n great_a store_n to_o prove_v the_o duty_n and_o persuade_v unto_o it_o if_o you_o love_v god_n who_o sin_n grieve_v if_o you_o love_v your_o neighbour_n who_o sin_n hurt_v and_o if_o you_o hate_v sin_n itself_o which_o all_o aught_o to_o hate_v that_o love_n god_n and_o their_o neighbour_n if_o you_o consider_v how_o loathsome_a and_o grievous_a a_o thing_n sin_n be_v how_o offensive_a to_o god_n yea_o and_o injurious_a how_o harmful_a also_o to_o mankind_n both_o to_o he_o that_o dare_v practice_v it_o who_o soul_n it_o tumble_v to_o the_o bottom_n of_o hell_n beside_o other_o cross_n of_o all_o sort_n which_o attend_v it_o for_o the_o present_a and_o also_o to_o the_o country_n where_o it_o be_v suffer_v cause_v the_o lord_n to_o send_v out_o sword_n pestilence_n famine_n and_o all_o manner_n of_o doleful_a misery_n against_o it_o if_o you_o consider_v that_o this_o mourning_n will_v sure_o cause_v the_o lord_n to_o reprieve_n the_o whole_a country_n and_o that_o it_o will_v keep_v the_o soul_n of_o the_o mourner_n free_a from_o infection_n and_o stir_v he_o up_o to_o all_o due_a mean_n of_o redress_v sin_n and_o so_o save_v his_o own_o soul_n at_o least_o from_o the_o common_a calamity_n when_o it_o can_v now_o be_v long_a not_o defer_v and_o last_o if_o you_o remember_v that_o where_o this_o mourning_n be_v absent_a a_o man_n soul_n will_v sure_o be_v infect_v he_o will_v grow_v careless_a of_o do_v that_o which_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v for_o redress_v of_o evil_a and_o so_o sin_n grow_v mighty_a will_v infallible_o and_o inevitable_o procure_v a_o common_a judgement_n in_o which_o himself_o shall_v also_o as_o a_o man_n not_o sign_v for_o deliverance_n be_v take_v away_o among_o the_o rest_n if_o i_o say_v you_o do_v acknowledge_v and_o confess_v all_o these_o thing_n as_o they_o be_v all_o manifest_a and_o do_v serious_o lay_v they_o to_o heart_n you_o can_v choose_v but_o yield_v in_o your_o very_a conscience_n that_o you_o all_o aught_o to_o do_v as_o the_o prophet_n here_o profess_v to_o the_o lord_n that_o himself_o be_v wont_a to_o do_v even_o cause_n rivers_n of_o water_n gush_v out_o of_o your_o eye_n because_o man_n keep_v not_o the_o law_n of_o god_n chap._n vi_o contain_v the_o first_o use_n of_o the_o point_n a_o reproof_n of_o they_o that_o do_v neglect_v this_o duty_n use_v 1_o but_o alas_o alas_o my_o brethren_n sin_n reproof_n of_o those_o that_o mourn_v not_o for_o common_a sin_n how_o slow_a and_o backward_o have_v we_o all_o be_v to_o this_o so_o with_o he_o or_o she_o that_o be_v able_a to_o profess_v in_o truth_n before_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o own_o soul_n o_o lord_n river_n of_o water_n have_v run_v down_o my_o eye_n because_o they_o keep_v not_o thy_o law_n o_o no_o no_o we_o be_v sell_v over_o to_o mirth_n and_o jollity_n behold_v slay_v of_o ox_n and_o kill_v of_o sheep_n eat_v and_o drink_v and_o call_v to_o hang_v sorrow_n forsooth_o because_o his_o neighbour_n be_v wicked_a and_o ill_a live_a man_n and_o keep_v not_o god_n precept_n why_o will_v they_o think_v and_o say_v what_o be_v that_o to_o he_o shall_v he_o bear_v other_o man_n burden_n or_o answer_v for_o other_o man_n sin_n or_o can_v he_o mend_v their_o fault_n by_o sigh_v and_o weep_v for_o they_o why_o then_o shall_v he_o vex_v himself_o for_o that_o which_o will_v bear_v never_o a_o whit_n the_o better_a if_o he_o shall_v vex_v his_o heart_n out_o at_o it_o this_o will_v be_v the_o censure_n of_o the_o common_a and_o ordinary_a man_n of_o such_o a_o mourner_n as_o the_o text_n speak_v of_o they_o will_v count_v his_o tear_n ill_o spend_v and_o himself_o a_o fool_n for_o his_o labour_n and_o as_o be_v their_o judgement_n such_o be_v and_o such_o needs_o must_v be_v their_o practice_n they_o never_o in_o all_o their_o life_n weep_v one_o ten_o part_n of_o a_o tear_n for_o all_o the_o sin_n and_o abominable_a deed_n that_o ever_o they_o hear_v of_o or_o see_v commit_v unless_o it_o have_v fall_v out_o that_o the_o same_o thing_n have_v be_v a_o hurt_n unto_o themselves_o or_o some_o other_o man_n who_o case_n they_o have_v tender_v and_o so_o bemoan_v the_o person_n not_o bewail_v the_o sin_n be_v sorry_a for_o it_o as_o a_o injury_n against_o man_n not_o as_o a_o transgression_n of_o god_n precept_n but_o this_o neglect_n be_v not_o find_v alone_o with_o the_o vulgar_a sort_n of_o man_n nay_o those_o that_o have_v get_v some_o good_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n and_o of_o virtue_n and_o do_v exercise_v themselves_o with_o some_o due_a care_n to_o keep_v themselves_o unsported_a of_o the_o wicked_a world_n even_o these_o also_o for_o the_o most_o part_n have_v eye_n altogether_o dry_a and_o tearless_a in_o regard_n of_o other_o man_n offence_n who_o of_o those_o that_o seem_v to_o know_v and_o fear_n god_n &_o to_o delight_v
in_o his_o way_n be_v careful_a to_o wipe_v away_o the_o stain_n of_o his_o neighbour_n sin_n with_o his_o own_o tear_n brethren_n i_o demand_v of_o each_o of_o you_o can_v you_o say_v &_o affirm_v and_o that_o true_o and_o sincere_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n that_o your_o eye_n do_v yield_v forth_o stream_n of_o water_n for_o the_o public_a sin_n again_o i_o propound_v this_o question_n to_o every_o of_o your_o conscience_n be_v thou_o able_a to_o take_v up_o david_n word_n here_o and_o with_o the_o good_a leave_n of_o thy_o own_o conscience_n to_o affirm_v as_o he_o affirm_v river_n of_o water_n etc._n etc._n doubtless_o there_o be_v but_o very_o few_o if_o at_o all_o there_o be_v any_o of_o we_o that_o may_v affirm_v thus_o much_o of_o himself_o without_o a_o manifest_a accusation_n of_o falsehood_n in_o his_o own_o soul_n if_o we_o lament_v our_o own_o sin_n we_o think_v it_o abundant_o sufficient_a though_o we_o lend_v no_o tear_n at_o all_o to_o bewail_v our_o neighbour_n fault_n indeed_o it_o must_v not_o be_v deny_v that_o the_o great_a number_n of_o tear_n and_o those_o the_o most_o earnest_a and_o bitter_a must_v be_v bestow_v by_o every_o man_n in_o lament_v the_o sin_n of_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o life_n but_o yet_o see_v god_n be_v dishonour_v also_o by_o the_o fault_n of_o other_o and_o the_o soul_n of_o our_o brethren_n as_o well_o as_o our_o own_o soul_n aught_o to_o be_v dear_a unto_o we_o neither_o can_v it_o be_v deny_v that_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n and_o a_o fruit_n of_o our_o not_o sufficient_o hate_v sin_n and_o love_a god_n scarce_o five_o scarce_o two_o scarce_o one_o scarce_o half_a a_o one_o do_v proceed_v from_o my_o eye_n for_o the_o many_o and_o heinous_a transgression_n that_o i_o do_v daily_o see_v with_o my_o eye_n where_o be_v my_o love_n to_o thou_o lord_n where_o my_o hatred_n of_o sin_n where_o my_o charity_n to_o my_o brethren_n o_o how_o just_o may_v thou_o sweep_v i_o away_o with_o the_o bosom_n of_o the_o common_a destruction_n and_o bring_v thy_o fearful_a plague_n upon_o all_o of_o we_o even_o myself_o among_o the_o rest_n because_o they_o sin_v and_o i_o weep_v not_o for_o their_o sin_n we_o be_v bind_v brethren_n even_o to_o be_v angry_a and_o to_o fall_v out_o with_o ourselves_o when_o we_o find_v in_o ourselves_o a_o manifest_a neglect_n of_o a_o plain_a duty_n so_o evident_o among_o we_o that_o can_v eager_o inveigh_v against_o the_o word_n naughtiness_n and_o aggravate_v the_o offence_n of_o other_o in_o word_n and_o with_o a_o satirical_a bitterness_n set_v out_o the_o greatness_n of_o their_o folly_n yea_o there_o be_v some_o that_o can_v make_v matter_n worse_o than_o they_o be_v and_o set_v a_o deep_a and_o dirty_o colour_n upon_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o than_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v but_o among_o these_o witty_a and_o sharp_a reproover_n of_o these_o vehement_a and_o clamorous_a accuser_n be_v there_o any_o one_o trow_v you_o that_o may_v be_v call_v a_o weeper_n a_o mourner_n a_o lamenter_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o exercise_v one_o wit_n upon_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o by_o make_v they_o ridiculous_a to_o move_v the_o spleen_n with_o laughter_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o exercise_v one_o stomach_n upon_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o by_o violent_a invective_n to_o make_v the_o offender_n odious_a but_o it_o be_v hard_a yea_o hard_o indeed_o to_o exercise_v one_o sorrow_n upon_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o to_o make_v ourselves_o careful_a of_o not_o offend_v in_o the_o like_a kind_n and_o of_o seek_v to_o stop_v they_o also_o from_o offend_v diverse_a may_v say_v i_o behold_v the_o transgressor_n and_o laugh_v at_o they_o diverse_a also_o i_o behold_v the_o transgressor_n &_o chafe_v at_o they_o but_o few_o alas_o how_o few_o can_v use_v another_o sentence_n of_o david_n in_o this_o psalm_n and_o say_v i_o behold_v the_o transgressor_n and_o be_v grieve_v because_o they_o keep_v not_o thy_o word_n let_v we_o therefore_o earnest_o i_o acknowledge_v a_o generation_n of_o faultfinding_n man_n that_o make_v we_o far_o worse_o than_o we_o be_v their_o sharp-sighted_a eye_n can_v see_v no_o lawful_a ministry_n no_o true_a word_n church_n sacrament_n nor_o prayer_n among_o we_o and_o yet_o of_o these_o captious_a people_n and_o carp_a nation_n that_o overlash_n so_o much_o in_o accuse_v there_o be_v scarce_o any_o that_o mourn_v for_o the_o thing_n he_o carp_v at_o for_o they_o so_o spend_v themselves_o in_o false_a accuse_v that_o they_o have_v no_o leisure_n to_o bestow_v in_o true_a bewail_v of_o our_o sin_n but_o though_o we_o may_v not_o nor_o must_v not_o acknowledge_v ourselves_o so_o bad_a as_o they_o will_v make_v we_o for_o a_o body_n may_v live_v though_o he_o be_v sick_a and_o disease_a and_o job_n be_v a_o true_a and_o live_a man_n though_o cover_v over_o from_o head_n to_o foot_n with_o boil_n and_o ulcer_n that_o his_o friend_n know_v he_o not_o yet_o neither_o can_v we_o deny_v ourselves_o to_o be_v a_o people_n very_o wicked_a and_o disorder_v to_o who_o the_o prophet_n word_n may_v fit_o be_v apply_v ah_o sinful_a nation_n ah_o people_n lade_v with_o wickedness_n a_o corrupt_a seed_n and_o again_o we_o have_v deep_o revolt_v from_o the_o lord_n and_o our_o sin_n be_v go_v over_o our_o head_n and_o they_o reach_v up_o to_o heaven_n and_o in_o another_o sense_n we_o may_v say_v as_o he_o the_o whole_a head_n be_v sick_a the_o whole_a heart_n be_v heavy_a from_o the_o crown_n of_o the_o head_n to_o the_o sole_n of_o the_o foot_n there_o be_v little_a to_o be_v see_v but_o wound_n and_o swell_n and_o yet_o ah_o yet_o we_o lament_v not_o those_o that_o fear_v god_n lament_v not_o those_o that_o come_v to_o church_n and_o love_v the_o word_n lament_v not_o those_o that_o desire_v otherwise_o to_o walk_v upright_o and_o conscionable_o lament_v not_o so_o that_o it_o may_v well_o be_v a_o question_n whether_o most_o of_o we_o ever_o read_v this_o sentence_n or_o hear_v it_o we_o be_v make_v of_o a_o firm_a mettle_n than_o that_o sorrow_n can_v melt_v we_o we_o may_v then_o lay_v the_o blame_n upon_o the_o body_n rather_o than_o the_o mind_n and_o yet_o if_o nature_n have_v deny_v we_o tear_n it_o have_v not_o deny_v we_o sigh_n &_o groan_n it_o have_v not_o deny_v we_o the_o power_n of_o sit_v in_o heaviness_n and_o of_o make_v ourselves_o sad_a and_o pensive_a though_o we_o can_v not_o weep_v so_o plentiful_o as_o this_o prophet_n yet_o we_o may_v end_v our_o heart_n and_o earn_v in_o our_o bowel_n and_o ache_v within_o and_o sigh_v and_o grind_v our_o very_a soul_n to_o powder_n which_o yet_o alas_o we_o neither_o do_v nor_o strive_v to_o do_v as_o the_o outward_a demonstration_n of_o sorrow_n i_o mean_v wet_a eye_n be_v absent_a from_o we_o so_o be_v also_o the_o substance_n thereof_o i_o mean_v the_o inward_a tumble_v of_o the_o soul_n up_o and_o down_o disquiet_o the_o heart_n beat_v itself_o as_o it_o be_v against_o itself_o and_o cause_v itself_o to_o be_v pain_v so_o then_o we_o neither_o mourn_v outward_o nor_o yet_o inward_o we_o neither_o weep_v with_o our_o eye_n nor_o grieve_v with_o our_o heart_n and_o what_o can_v we_o say_v in_o our_o own_o defence_n for_o certain_o brethren_n it_o be_v not_o the_o want_n of_o aptness_n to_o weep_v that_o make_v we_o not_o to_o weep_v for_o our_o eye_n be_v ready_a enough_o in_o other_o case_n and_o for_o other_o matter_n to_o yield_v forth_o even_a river_n of_o water_n let_v but_o a_o husband_n or_o wife_n or_o child_n or_o friend_n lie_v sick_a and_o be_v ready_a to_o die_v let_v but_o fire_n come_v and_o consume_v some_o part_n of_o our_o good_n let_v any_o man_n but_o cousin_n and_o deceive_v we_o of_o some_o sum_n of_o money_n yea_o let_v any_o friend_n show_v himself_o unkind_a and_o disrespectful_a of_o we_o yea_o let_v any_o enemy_n reproach_n we_o with_o froward_a and_o bitter_a speech_n yea_o let_v a_o governor_n chide_v and_o shend_v we_o as_o we_o think_v make_v more_o account_n of_o its_o self_n then_o of_o its_o maker_n here_o now_o if_o in_o any_o thing_n we_o shall_v enlarge_v ourselves_o in_o speak_v against_o ourselves_o and_o in_o reprove_v shame_v condemn_v ourselves_o and_o this_o if_o any_o thing_n we_o shall_v most_o vehement_o press_v upon_o ourselves_o as_o a_o extreme_a and_o unansweerable_a aggravation_n of_o our_o hardness_n which_o by_o this_o we_o know_v not_o to_o be_v natural_a but_o sinful_a say_v to_o thyself_o i_o come_v to_o such_o a_o place_n such_o a_o time_n and_o find_v the_o countenance_n of_o my_o parent_n brother_n sister_n or_o friend_n estrange_v from_o i_o and_o his_o word_n and_o carriage_n unloving_a towards_o i_o it_o put_v i_o in_o my_o dump_n for_o a_o day_n or_o two_o after_o and_o make_v i_o defectivenesse_n in_o the_o other_o but_o both_o lay_v together_o do_v make_v up_o the_o measure_n of_o my_o hardheartednesse_n to_o the_o full_a if_o i_o can_v sigh_v mourn_n weep_v for_o nothing_o it_o be_v not_o so_o much_o that_o i_o do_v it_o not_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o but_o when_o i_o have_v such_o store_n of_o tear_n for_o other_o thing_n now_o to_o be_v so_o scant_o of_o they_o for_o that_o that_o deserve_v the_o far_o great_a quantity_n what_o shall_v i_o say_v of_o myself_o sure_o this_o deserve_v a_o degree_n of_o sorrow_n beyond_o tear_n and_o so_o fall_v upon_o thy_o own_o heart_n and_o crush_v it_o too_o piece_n with_o dislike_n of_o thyself_o that_o have_v be_v so_o extreme_o isensible_a in_o god_n behalf_n so_o overtend_a in_o thy_o own_o o_o that_o these_o word_n of_o i_o may_v so_o far_o prevail_v with_o myself_o and_o you_o brethren_z that_o we_o may_v at_o leastwise_o acknowledge_v ourselves_o to_o be_v great_o faulty_a for_o not_o have_v discover_v our_o detestation_n of_o sin_n our_o good_a will_n to_o god_n and_o man_n our_o religious_a care_n of_o the_o public_a welfare_n and_o our_o own_o by_o take_v out_o the_o lesson_n of_o david_n and_o of_o jeremy_n and_o by_o follow_v the_o worthy_a pattern_n of_o holy_a ezra_n and_o bless_a paul_n and_o our_o most_o bless_a and_o worthy_a saviour_n himself_o doubtless_o it_o will_v do_v some_o good_a to_o know_v our_o sin_n and_o to_o confess_v against_o ourselves_o say_v i_o be_o in_o truth_n exceed_o oh_o blame_v for_o my_o lavish_a and_o prodigal_a cast_v away_o such_o a_o multitude_n of_o tear_n for_o nothing_o and_o bestow_v so_o very_a few_o or_o none_o in_o that_o case_n wherein_o they_o will_v have_v be_v as_o precious_a seed_n in_o a_o good_a ground_n exceed_v profitable_a to_o myself_o and_o other_o i_o mean_v in_o bewail_v the_o sin_n both_o of_o myself_o and_o of_o the_o time_n chap._n vii_o contain_v the_o second_o use_n viz._n a_o exhortation_n and_o direction_n to_o this_o duty_n of_o mourn_v for_o the_o fault_n of_o other_o use_v 2_o but_o now_o hope_v that_o you_o do_v all_o both_o fee_n and_o feel_v mourn_v exhortation_n to_o mourn_v this_o omission_n
