unrighteous_a lust_n and_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o mind_n pervert_v by_o corrupt_a affection_n it_o can_v not_o easy_o resist_v apparent_a truth_n or_o not_o discern_v manifest_a falsehood_n but_o when_o the_o will_n give_v itself_o over_o to_o be_v rule_v by_o the_o appetite_n no_o marvel_n if_o the_o intellect_n natural_o subject_a unto_o the_o willâ—_n be_v as_o easy_o wrap_v in_o error_n ambition_n and_o avarice_n and_o desire_v of_o sin_v with_o sting_n of_o conscience_n have_v once_o seize_v upon_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n of_o old_a what_o strange_a leaven_n be_v they_o soon_o bring_v to_o mingle_v with_o the_o bread_n of_o life_n and_o how_o mighty_o have_v the_o same_o affection_n since_o wrought_v in_o many_o more_o hence_o as_o from_o the_o trojan_a horse_n so_o many_o impious_a but_o profitable_a deceit_n and_o device_n have_v issue_v forth_o upon_o ignorant_a people_n on_o the_o one_o side_n dispense_n with_o they_o for_o their_o own_o sin_n and_o dispense_n to_o they_o other_o man_n merit_n the_o imaginary_a treasure_n of_o the_o church_n that_o the_o church_n may_v be_v fill_v with_o real_a hence_o what_o strange_a position_n and_o unto_o piety_n most_o dangerous_a have_v be_v form_v on_o the_o other_o side_n establish_n justification_n even_o in_o the_o loss_n of_o sanctification_n presumptuous_o clothing_n themselves_o and_o their_o disciple_n with_o the_o righteousness_n of_o another_o even_o then_o when_o they_o be_v wilful_o unrighteous_a in_o themselves_o and_o so_o not_o content_a upon_o repentance_n to_o be_v justify_v by_o imputation_n but_o have_v find_v out_o even_o then_o whilst_o they_o sin_v a_o imputative_a indeed_o a_o mere_a putative_a sanctification_n that_o by_o this_o mean_n amid_o the_o work_n of_o darkness_n in_o the_o paradise_n of_o conceit_n they_o may_v still_o remain_v child_n of_o light_n but_o be_v not_o deceive_v say_v st._n john_n he_o that_o do_v righteousness_n be_v righteous_a all_o which_o though_o spisse_fw-la and_o palpable_a hallucinatious_a on_o both_o part_n yet_o so_o long_o as_o the_o eye_n be_v not_o single_a as_o our_o saviour_n speak_v but_o blear_v with_o mist_n of_o profit_n and_o pleasure_n they_o may_v not_o easy_o be_v deceive_v less_o easy_o redress_v in_o either_o they_o may_v term_v themselves_o as_o they_o please_v but_o so_o long_o as_o impure_a desire_n be_v seat_v in_o the_o soul_n nothing_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o tie_v they_o to_o the_o purity_n of_o that_o truth_n which_o oppose_v or_o withhold_v they_o from_o contend_v for_o such_o falsehood_n as_o suit_n with_o those_o desire_n itch_a ear_n and_o lust_n in_o the_o spirit_n neither_o will_v nor_o can_v endure_v sound_a doctrine_n say_v the_o apostle_n but_o rather_o than_o fail_v will_v raise_v up_o unto_o themselves_o teacher_n after_o their_o own_o lust_n and_o at_o their_o own_o charge_n raise_v preferment_n for_o they_o too_o that_o so_o their_o hire_a tongue_n may_v tickle_v their_o ear_n when_o they_o itch_v smooth_a or_o smother_v their_o sin_n in_o this_o case_n who_o shall_v prevail_v or_o what_o shall_v give_v man_n light_a if_o in_o favour_n of_o their_o evil_a way_n they_o love_v darkness_n more_o than_o light_n it_o be_v only_o the_o search_n and_o study_v of_o righteousness_n that_o can_v bring_v we_o into_o the_o way_n of_o truth_n and_o dissolve_v error_n and_o their_o controversy_n by_o take_v away_o their_o cause_n by_o remove_v those_o gross_a and_o earthly_a affection_n that_o like_v fog_n at_o noon_n darken_v and_o benight_v the_o judgement_n the_o pure_a and_o cleanse_a heart_n shall_v see_v god_n say_v our_o saviour_n see_v he_o perfect_o hereafter_o see_v of_o he_o and_o his_o truth_n more_o clear_o in_o the_o present_a as_o he_o do_v elsewhere_o assure_v we_o if_o any_o man_n do_v the_o will_n of_o my_o father_n he_o shall_v know_v of_o my_o doctrine_n but_o beside_o the_o nature_n of_o righteousness_n lead_v into_o truth_n the_o protection_n and_o providence_n divine_a seem_v special_o to_o assist_v and_o direct_v it_o the_o very_a secret_n of_o the_o lord_n say_v king_n david_n be_v upon_o they_o necessity_n of_o point_n and_o direct_v our_o prosecution_n according_o instruct_v we_o not_o to_o call_v every_o problematical_a question_n by_o the_o name_n of_o necessary_a and_o infallible_a truth_n but_o agree_v in_o fundamental_o either_o to_o leave_v superedification_n to_o the_o
and_o die_v the_o soul_n of_o the_o receiver_n which_o must_v be_v make_v partaker_n or_o shall_v be_v make_v guilty_a either_o partaker_n of_o the_o virtue_n or_o guilty_a of_o the_o shed_n thereof_o to_o his_o endless_a destruction_n that_o receive_v it_o unworthy_o the_o guilt_n you_o have_v in_o the_o precedent_a verse_n he_o shall_v be_v guilty_a of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o the_o lord_n the_o destruction_n in_o the_o subsequent_a he_o eat_v and_o drink_v damnation_n to_o himself_o not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n the_o exhortation_n in_o my_o text_n lie_v between_o both_o a_o man_n examine_v etc._n etc._n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n itself_o and_o a_o admission_n unto_o it_o hereafter_o at_o this_o time_n only_o of_o the_o preparation_n that_o shall_v go_v before_o it_o wherein_o you_o may_v consider_v 1._o the_o act_n wherein_o it_o consist_v examination_n and_o then_o the_o object_n of_o that_o act_n himself_o let_v a_o man_n etc._n etc._n but_o we_o shall_v preparation_n or_o qualification_n be_v the_o study_n and_o knowledge_n of_o ourselves_o and_o our_o own_o way_n 4._o because_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n be_v deceitful_a above_o all_o thing_n and_o we_o be_v all_o apt_a to_o deceive_v ourselves_o in_o judge_v of_o ourselves_o that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o superficial_a view_n but_o a_o strict_a examination_n that_o must_v give_v the_o just_a and_o true_a knowledge_n of_o ourselves_o 5._o and_o last_o we_o will_v make_v and_o practice_v this_o examination_n in_o those_o point_n we_o have_v find_v necessary_a that_o after_o it_o they_o who_o be_v approve_v in_o their_o own_o conscience_n may_v cheerful_o approach_v unto_o the_o sacred_a mystery_n and_o eat_v of_o that_o bread_n and_o drink_n of_o that_o cup_n to_o their_o endless_a comfort_n and_o other_o that_o be_v not_o so_o as_o i_o think_v few_o be_v may_v first_o reform_v themselves_o lest_o they_o eat_v and_o drink_v as_o the_o apostle_n here_o threaten_v damnation_n to_o themselves_o so_o these_o five_o the_o necessity_n of_o preparation_n and_o what_o the_o prepation_n be_v that_o be_v so_o necessary_a that_o the_o best_a mean_n to_o attain_v it_o be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o ourselves_o and_o the_o best_a way_n to_o come_v to_o this_o knowledge_n examination_n which_o examination_n because_o it_o be_v the_o chief_a point_n we_o will_v strict_o make_v in_o the_o last_o place_n that_o according_a to_o it_o we_o may_v either_o approve_v or_o reform_v ourselves_o before_o we_o presume_v to_o come_v to_o the_o dreadful_a sacrament_n of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o our_o lord_n these_o 5._o i_o say_v we_o shall_v at_o this_o time_n as_o god_n shall_v enable_v prosecute_v in_o their_o order_n but_o plain_o as_o desirous_a to_o leave_v you_o rather_o better_o than_o more_o learned_a and_o first_o of_o the_o first_o the_o necessity_n of_o preparation_n but_o let_v a_o man_n examine_v etc._n etc._n the_o end_n of_o examination_n be_v preparation_n be_v mean_v the_o affection_n of_o the_o heart_n for_o as_o by_o the_o foot_n the_o body_n walk_v so_o by_o the_o affection_n the_o soul_n move_v to_o whatsoever_o it_o desire_v they_o be_v the_o spring_n and_o fountain_n of_o all_o her_o vital_a operation_n and_o as_o the_o fountain_n be_v such_o be_v the_o stream_n if_o those_o be_v trouble_v these_o will_v be_v foul_a if_o they_o be_v cleanse_v the_o other_o will_v run_v clear_a and_o therefore_o these_o foot_n these_o affection_n of_o the_o heart_n be_v once_o wash_v the_o meditation_n of_o the_o head_n the_o word_n of_o the_o mouth_n and_o the_o action_n of_o the_o hand_n which_o be_v but_o river_n flow_v from_o the_o abundance_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o heart_n affection_n can_v but_o partake_v of_o the_o same_o purity_n for_o which_o reason_n when_o peter_n who_o at_o the_o first_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o be_v wash_v at_o all_o afterward_o be_v desirous_a to_o have_v all_o wash_v his_o head_n and_o his_o we_o we_o can_v attain_v unto_o they_o you_o do_v withal_o say_v and_o confess_v that_o you_o do_v not_o true_o believe_v for_o true_a faith_n be_v not_o dead_a or_o droâ—zy_a but_o powerful_a and_o account_n whatsoever_o you_o think_v none_o be_v take_v for_o believer_n any_o far_a than_o they_o be_v practiser_n of_o his_o word_n he_o that_o say_v he_o know_v god_n and_o hate_v his_o brother_n be_v a_o liar_n say_v st._n john_n and_o sure_o he_o that_o say_v he_o believe_v in_o god_n and_o yet_o forsake_v not_o his_o sin_n lie_v as_o loud_o and_o do_v but_o abuse_v his_o own_o soul_n vain_o night_n of_o treasure_n and_o in_o the_o morning_n when_o he_o awake_v be_v not_o worth_a a_o farthing_n with_o that_o church_n in_o the_o revelation_n they_o have_v a_o name_n that_o they_o live_v and_o conceit_n they_o be_v rich_a whenas_o there_o it_o be_v say_v they_o be_v blind_a and_o poor_a and_o naked_a and_o miserable_a and_o shall_v so_o understand_v themselves_o in_o the_o end_n for_o however_o now_o we_o please_v ourselves_o for_o a_o while_n with_o the_o vain_a opinion_n of_o our_o imaginary_a faith_n yet_o when_o we_o have_v sleep_v our_o sleep_n and_o dream_v our_o dream_n in_o the_o morning_n when_o we_o shall_v all_o awake_a from_o our_o grave_n and_o come_v unto_o judgement_n it_o will_v be_v find_v far_o otherwise_o than_o we_o conceive_v when_o the_o son_n of_o man_n come_v say_v our_o saviour_n himself_o shall_v he_o sin_v faith_n upon_o the_o earth_n sure_o yes_o such_o as_o we_o for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v faith_n enough_o such_o a_o speculative_a fancy_n enthrone_v in_o the_o very_a heart_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o from_o thence_o command_v all_o the_o power_n and_o faculty_n which_o it_o have_v of_o that_o prevalent_a and_o victorious_a faith_n conquer_a sin_n and_o satan_n and_o tread_v under_o foot_n the_o glory_n and_o vanity_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n of_o this_o solid_a and_o substantial_a faith_n which_o only_o deserve_v the_o name_n of_o faith_n and_o he_o only_o look_v for_o of_o this_o he_o shall_v then_o find_v but_o little_a in_o the_o world_n as_o indeed_o there_o be_v very_o little_a now_o some_o scatter_a spark_n of_o it_o only_o there_o be_v in_o a_o few_o of_o our_o bosom_n but_o rake_v up_o in_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o ember_n and_o if_o we_o take_v not_o heed_n like_a enough_o to_o be_v stifle_v ere_o we_o be_v aware_a o_o preserve_v and_o collect_v they_o careful_o blow_v upon_o they_o with_o thy_o
meditation_n and_o fervent_a prayer_n never_o cease_v till_o they_o break_v forth_o into_o a_o flame_n that_o may_v even_o scorch_v thy_o heart_n with_o compunction_n and_o penitent_a remorse_n and_o fire_v thy_o soul_n with_o ardent_a and_o burn_a affection_n of_o love_n unto_o god_n and_o charity_n to_o thy_o brother_n which_o be_v the_o rest_n of_o the_o qualification_n wherewith_o you_o be_v to_o prepare_v yourselves_o and_o wherein_o if_o we_o shall_v proceed_v to_o search_v and_o continue_v a_o strict_a examination_n i_o be_o sure_a we_o shall_v find_v they_o every_o way_n and_o every_o
