take_v notice_n of_o you_o in_o all_o condition_n especial_o under_o such_o king_n &_o eminent_a person_n that_o will_v make_v you_o sufferer_n for_o your_o profession_n he_o delight_v to_o see_v you_o at_o such_o time_n so_o gracious_o affectionate_a as_o to_o pray_v for_o they_o he_o see_v you_o then_o with_o a_o eye_n of_o acceptation_n and_o approbation_n as_o well_o as_o of_o discrimination_n what_o great_a engagement_n can_v be_v lay_v upon_o a_o heart_n prize_v the_o love_n of_o god_n desirous_a to_o walk_v worthy_o before_o he_o and_o even_o in_o such_o time_n to_o have_v this_o testimony_n in_o he_o that_o he_o please_v god_n and_o mark_v v._o 4._o that_o rational_a ground_n paul_n lay_v to_o prove_v that_o such_o prayer_n be_v acceptable_a because_o they_o be_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n for_o they_o labour_v to_o draw_v out_o the_o mind_n and_o will_n of_o god_n to_o act_v for_o soul_n yet_o in_o darkness_n and_o unbelieving_a our_o saviour_n will_v have_v all_o save_v that_o be_v some_o of_o all_o estate_n some_o king_n and_o governor_n some_o of_o the_o high_a authority_n as_o well_o as_o other_o subject_n his_o blood_n be_v ransom_n sufficient_a to_o redeem_v the_o most_o considerable_a slave_n satan_n have_v and_o he_o be_v able_a by_o the_o evidence_n of_o gospel_n to_o evince_v the_o strong_a reason_n of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n why_o may_v not_o this_o man_n prove_v a_o paul_n this_o trajan_n prove_v a_o joseph_n why_o may_v not_o some_o of_o these_o all_o be_v here_o where_o i_o live_v and_o under_o who_o shadow_n i_o in_o peace_n lie_v down_o however_o whether_o they_o belong_v to_o the_o election_n of_o god_n yet_o the_o duty_n be_v acceptable_a itself_o and_o it_o be_v do_v not_o only_o in_o reference_n to_o the_o command_n reveal_v but_o to_o the_o execution_n of_o the_o secret_a will_n of_o god_n to_o such_o which_o may_v extend_v to_o these_o particular_a man_n in_o this_o present_a authority_n over_o he_o and_o if_o it_o do_v and_o these_o person_n become_v true_a believer_n they_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o obtain_v the_o general_a and_o main_a end_n of_o their_o desire_n viz._n to_o govern_v in_o peace_n to_o promote_v and_o protect_v godliness_n profess_v by_o they_o to_o guard_v their_o person_n &_o estate_n from_o the_o injurious_a deal_n of_o lewd_a person_n that_o be_v the_o notorious_a enemy_n of_o peace_n and_o holiness_n that_o so_o through_o their_o watchfulness_n and_o care_n the_o subject_n may_v be_v deliver_v from_o such_o fear_n and_o trouble_v as_o be_v incident_a to_o they_o through_o a_o loose_a and_o tyrannical_a government_n first_o then_o let_v we_o look_v into_o our_o own_o duty_n which_o be_v to_o seek_v of_o god_n for_o spiritual_a and_o temporal_a blessing_n to_o be_v pour_v forth_o upon_o the_o supreme_a magistrate_n what_o ever_o he_o be_v and_o of_o all_o under_o he_o or_o they_o act_v in_o the_o same_o government_n that_o peace_n may_v be_v establish_v godliness_n advance_v honesty_n maintain_v to_o discuss_v this_o plain_o we_o shall_v draw_v it_o forth_o into_o these_o proposition_n 1._o that_o the_o disposition_n and_o inward_a frame_n of_o a_o christian_a shall_v be_v for_o a_o peaceable_a godly_a and_o honest_a life_n 2._o that_o the_o people_n of_o god_n under_o any_o government_n whatsoever_o may_v be_v deprive_v thereof_o 3._o that_o prayer_n be_v a_o probable_a mean_n to_o recover_v a_o break_a peace_n religion_n and_o liberty_n 4._o that_o under_o all_o government_n whatsoever_o this_o shall_v be_v the_o practice_n of_o a_o true_a christian-subject_a to_o pray_v for_o they_o as_o to_o the_o first_o that_o the_o inward_a temper_n and_o disposition_n of_o a_o christian_a shall_v be_v peaceable_a godly_a and_o honest_a his_o inward_a thought_n and_o affection_n so_o qualify_v the_o heart_n be_v the_o fountain_n of_o desire_n out_o of_o the_o abundance_n of_o it_o we_o speak_v therefore_o that_o we_o pray_v for_o according_a to_o the_o apostle_n precept_n shall_v be_v sincere_o affect_v and_o delight_v in_o by_o the_o soul_n if_o it_o can_v be_v obtain_v by_o prayer_n the_o thing_n seek_v for_o be_v peace_n
have_v no_o more_o promise_n in_o the_o whole_a word_n these_o be_v sufficient_a infallible_o to_o bind_v the_o lord_n to_o this_o and_o faithful_o to_o preserve_v the_o expectation_n of_o his_o with_o he_o and_o indeed_o all_o promise_n but_o especial_o those_o of_o this_o nature_n shall_v have_v these_o several_a effect_n on_o every_o true_a believer_n viz._n to_o transform_v we_o into_o the_o likeness_n of_o god_n in_o they_o to_o live_v so_o on_o they_o as_o if_o in_o present_a we_o share_v of_o they_o to_o strengthen_v we_o in_o faith_n and_o patience_n to_o wait_v on_o he_o in_o hope_n to_o rejoice_v in_o he_o by_o prayer_n to_o strive_v for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o they_o and_o by_o our_o practice_n to_o draw_v they_o onward_o to_o we_o and_o to_o prepare_v ourselves_o for_o they_o to_o conclude_v this_o with_o that_o of_o a_o holy_a martyr_n upon_o that_o legacy_n of_o christ_n leave_v to_o his_o people_n my_o peace_n i_o leave_v with_o you_o say_v that_o christ_n have_v leave_v or_o give_v to_o his_o church_n peace_n in_o promise_n hanc_fw-la nobis_fw-la haereditatem_fw-la christus_fw-la dedit_fw-la dona_fw-la omne_fw-la sva_fw-la pollicitationis_fw-la &_o find_v by_o experience_n the_o mighty_a power_n of_o prayer_n effect_v as_o great_a thing_n as_o these_o promise_n contain_v the_o saint_n of_o god_n by_o prayer_n have_v elicit_v the_o power_n of_o god_n and_o stir_v up_o the_o tender_a affection_n of_o god_n to_o put_v forth_o that_o power_n to_o establish_v his_o people_n in_o such_o blessing_n heb._n 11.33_o if_o faith_n in_o the_o promise_n can_v subdue_v kingdom_n can_v the_o same_o faith_n subdue_v the_o heart_n of_o king_n and_o bring_v promise_n of_o as_o little_a difficulty_n to_o perfection_n but_o further_a you_o shall_v see_v what_o way_n prayer_n have_v make_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o king_n and_o that_o god_n have_v wrought_v more_o gracious_o on_o their_o spirit_n upon_o their_o prayer_n than_o by_o his_o judicial_a sign_n and_o wonder_n we_o read_v of_o that_o great_a trouble_n and_o affliction_n the_o spirit_n of_o nehemiah_n lie_v under_o for_o the_o sad_a estate_n of_o jerusalem_n which_o the_o king_n his_o uncertain_a way_n very_o improbable_a it_o be_v that_o a_o woman_n and_o a_o captive_a too_o shall_v upon_o a_o bare_a request_n undo_v what_o a_o great_a court_n favourite_n have_v do_v and_o which_o be_v execute_v carry_v a_o great_a pretence_n of_o emolument_fw-fr and_o income_n to_o the_o king_n treasury_n yet_o mark_v the_o way_n she_o take_v chap._n 4._o v._n 16._o go_v gather_v together_o all_o the_o jew_n that_o be_v in_o shushan_n and_o fast_o you_o for_o i_o i_o also_o &_o i_o will_v etc._n etc._n such_o as_o be_v most_o ready_a must_v join_v in_o this_o duty_n they_o must_v not_o delay_v its_o performance_n till_o all_o that_o be_v like_a to_o suffer_v shall_v know_v of_o it_o but_o first_o they_o pray_v for_o her_o good_a speed_n and_o when_o she_o come_v she_o find_v the_o heart_n of_o of_o the_o king_n as_o ready_a to_o receive_v she_o and_o answer_v she_o in_o all_o her_o desire_n as_o if_o her_o soul_n have_v be_v transanimate_v to_o his_o body_n or_o have_v be_v long_o before_o prepare_v for_o she_o see_v then_o the_o mighty_a power_n of_o prayer_n that_o prevail_v for_o the_o destruction_n of_o many_o and_o potent_a enemy_n why_o not_o for_o their_o salvation_n do_v not_o their_o salvation_n lie_v in_o the_o way_n of_o thy_o prayer_n as_o well_o as_o their_o ruin_n or_o be_v it_o less_o glory_n to_o god_n or_o will_v it_o be_v less_o comfort_n to_o his_o church_n rather_o to_o see_v they_o save_v then_o ruin_v prayer_n have_v wrought_v favour_n for_o the_o church_n in_o their_o eye_n and_o it_o may_v work_v favour_n for_o they_o also_o in_o the_o lord_n eye_n and_o sure_o it_o be_v that_o this_o be_v the_o best_a way_n to_o make_v they_o the_o church_n for_o if_o they_o be_v the_o lord_n they_o will_v be_v his_o people_n and_o it_o be_v far_o sweet_a to_o suck_v the_o milk_n out_o of_o the_o breast_n of_o gracious_a magistrate_n then_o wicked_a magistrate_n though_o their_o favour_n shall_v be_v all_o one_o and_o if_o prayer_n be_v a_o mean_n whereby_o solomon_n obtain_v grace_n for_o himself_o it_o be_v a_o mean_n also_o whereby_o a_o people_n may_v obtain_v it_o for_o the_o magistrate_n wherein_o they_o may_v be_v make_v effectual_a fervent_a prayer_n of_o the_o righteous_a avail_n much_o but_o as_o to_o these_o in_o particular_a the_o lord_n tell_v he_o his_o people_n how_o precious_a his_o thought_n be_v to_o they_o in_o their_o captivity_n that_o his_o mind_n stand_v to_o their_o grace_n and_o mercy_n jer._n 29.11_o i_o know_v the_o thought_n etc._n etc._n and_o the_o lord_n tell_v they_o this_o for_o this_o yet_o the_o lord_n draw_v argument_n from_o we_o even_o the_o work_n of_o his_o grace_n in_o we_o and_o the_o work_n of_o that_o grace_n out_o of_o we_o up_o to_o himself_o to_o accelerate_v the_o work_n in_o the_o forementioned_a promise_n of_o crown_v his_o spouse_n with_o such_o a_o hopeful_a magistracy_n he_o give_v this_o reason_n of_o it_o isa_n 29.23_o for_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v be_v no_o certain_a discovery_n of_o their_o mind_n but_o their_o prayer_n which_o they_o dare_v not_o counterfeit_a when_o they_o go_v to_o their_o god_n and_o father_n who_o be_v the_o searcher_n and_o trier_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o reins_n nay_o they_o not_o only_o sometime_o pray_v for_o the_o magistrate_n but_o they_o make_v it_o their_o business_n this_o be_v a_o chief_a thing_n that_o in_o the_o first_o of_o all_o thing_n they_o must_v place_v even_o the_o happy_a government_n of_o the_o magistrate_n and_o that_o they_o may_v enjoy_v a_o true_a subject_n life_n as_o god_n have_v commit_v they_o to_o thy_o hand_n so_o they_o commit_v thou_o and_o thy_o government_n into_o god_n hand_n what_o thou_o labour_v for_o they_o true_o pray_v for_o that_o the_o lord_n will_v enable_v thou_o with_o such_o grace_n and_o gift_n to_o guide_v thou_o by_o his_o spirit_n and_o so_o guide_v himself_o too_o that_o thou_o may_v rule_v and_o govern_v in_o peace_n holiness_n and_o honesty_n see_v here_o his_o heart_n run_v in_o unto_o thou_o his_o affection_n make_v haste_n to_o meet_v his_o endeavour_n strive_v to_o answer_v the_o sum_n of_o a_o good_a magistrate_n desire_v and_o to_o themselves_o unless_o in_o apparent_a case_n of_o necessity_n peace_n itself_o be_v concern_v in_o it_o yet_o they_o be_v according_a to_o the_o first_o qualification_n of_o the_o apostle_n the_o true_a subject_n that_o true_o desire_v to_o lead_v a_o peaceable_a and_o quiet_a life_n yet_o questionless_a the_o eminency_n of_o their_o affection_n and_o the_o exactness_n of_o their_o subjection_n appear_v only_o in_o this_o again_o this_o inform_v that_o a_o wicked_a person_n can_v be_v a_o true_a subject_n the_o contentious_a man_n be_v a_o enemy_n to_o peace_n disquiet_v the_o innocent_a member_n of_o jesus_n christ_n so_o the_o ungodly_a man_n be_v inward_o a_o hater_n of_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o godly_a and_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o entertain_v and_o violent_o to_o honesty_n if_o thou_o be_v a_o gracious_a ruler_n and_o desire_v so_o to_o govern_v the_o people_n thou_o will_v delight_v in_o and_o receive_v to_o thyself_o such_o as_o meet_v thou_o in_o the_o end_n of_o thy_o government_n cornelius_n be_v a_o good_a man_n and_o love_v man_n like_o himself_o as_o good_a though_o not_o as_o great_a as_o himself_o such_o shall_v be_v near_o his_o person_n the_o peace_n of_o common_a society_n sure_o such_o be_v to_o be_v have_v in_o honour_n that_o be_v so_o ready_a to_o every_o good_a work_n i_o know_v that_o there_o be_v many_o in_o authority_n at_o this_o present_a to_o who_o good_a man_n be_v dear_a to_o they_o as_o the_o apple_n of_o their_o eye_n yet_o again_o i_o know_v they_o to_o be_v but_o man_n and_o may_v receive_v accusation_n private_o suggest_v have_v many_o come_n to_o their_o ear_n and_o such_o be_v receive_v and_o the_o mind_n possess_v of_o they_o it_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n to_o unsettle_v they_o and_o remove_v they_o from_o the_o affection_n anger_n inveterate_v rurne_v to_o malice_n and_o that_o to_o worse_a and_o some_o ruler_n be_v too_o apt_a many_o time_n to_o spend_v their_o judgement_n according_a to_o a_o sudden_a apprehension_n or_o present_a information_n a_o ruler_n ought_v to_o be_v very_o careful_a herein_o against_o whosoever_o he_o receive_v any_o thing_n or_o speak_v especial_o of_o a_o good_a man_n who_o heart_n be_v or_o shall_v be_v thus_o dispose_v present_o to_o peace_n holiness_n and_o honesty_n in_o all_o thing_n and_o in_o some_o particular_n that_o oblique_o seem_v to_o oppose_v some_o of_o these_o give_v he_o leave_v sober_o &_o solid_o to_o come_v up_o unto_o they_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n let_v he_o not_o lose_v that_o esteem_n and_o good_a affection_n that_o be_v due_a from_o thou_o to_o he_o which_o another_o day_n thou_o shall_v be_v force_v to_o acknowledge_v 3._o this_o show_n in_o what_o a_o perilous_a estate_n the_o magistrate_n stand_v his_o foot_n be_v set_v upon_o a_o hill_n which_o if_o either_o to_o wet_v or_o to_o dry_a may_v prove_v ill_a for_o he_o he_o therefore_o have_v not_o only_o need_v of_o his_o own_o prayer_n and_o watch_n but_o mouth_n of_o the_o ruler_n for_o if_o they_o err_v many_o err_v with_o they_o and_o in_o their_o ruin_n many_o perish_v moreover_o they_o do_v judge_n and_o speak_v for_o the_o lord_n and_o as_o in_o his_o stead_n and_o place_n and_o thence_o do_v their_o sin_n much_o reflect_v upon_o the_o lord_n and_o they_o do_v judge_v the_o lord_n people_n and_o his_o inheritance_n which_o ought_v tender_o to_o be_v respect_v there_o be_v many_o extraordinary_a and_o occasional_a employment_n that_o they_o need_v constant_o to_o stand_v under_o the_o dropping_n of_o the_o olive_n tree_n and_o we_o always_o to_o be_v put_v up_o our_o supplication_n for_o they_o for_o supply_v influence_n of_o courage_n integrity_n clearness_n of_o judgement_n and_o wisdom_n and_o here_o again_o be_v teach_v they_o that_o as_o the_o care_n of_o the_o people_n lie_v on_o they_o so_o good_a people_n bear_v much_o care_n for_o they_o they_o be_v afraid_a lest_o they_o shall_v slip_v or_o fail_v in_o the_o discharge_n of_o their_o place_n if_o they_o do_v they_o mourn_v over_o they_o they_o seek_v to_o restore_v they_o be_v very_o sensible_a of_o their_o condition_n know_v what_o loss_n the_o people_n of_o god_n may_v suffer_v by_o they_o and_o if_o such_o be_v the_o charge_n of_o other_o for_o they_o how_o great_a need_n have_v they_o in_o humility_n godly_a temperance_n and_o vigilancy_n to_o be_v overseer_n of_o themselves_o and_o frequent_o to_o examine_v their_o own_o heart_n and_o way_n and_o fall_v full_o to_o attend_v the_o lord_n in_o prayer_n and_o all_o other_o mean_n for_o strength_n and_o direction_n chap._n xiii_o herein_o by_o way_n of_o reflection_n the_o magistrate_n may_v take_v a_o view_n of_o his_o own_o duty_n to_o the_o subject_a what_o the_o subject_n be_v bind_v to_o seek_v for_o of_o god_n what_o they_o be_v bind_v in_o duty_n to_o endeavour_v to_o perform_v to_o he_o for_o the_o subject_n pray_v that_o he_o he_o may_v lead_v a_o quiet_a godly_a and_o honest_a life_n under_o he_o and_o to_o enable_v the_o magistrate_n so_o to_o rule_v and_o govern_v that_o his_o government_n may_v conduce_v hereunto_o which_o ought_v to_o be_v his_o study_n shall_v he_o not_o pray_v for_o he_o and_o this_o call_v upon_o i_o to_o handle_v the_o other_o part_n the_o ruler_n duty_n and_o how_o just_a the_o expectation_n of_o the_o subject_n be_v from_o he_o for_o their_o blessing_n but_o i_o must_v leave_v this_o for_o another_o opportunity_n which_o i_o hope_v god_n may_v cast_v into_o my_o lap_n only_o in_o present_a receive_v these_o brief_a observation_n 1._o let_v the_o magistrate_n endeavour_v a_o confluence_n of_o these_o three_o peace_n holiness_n and_o honesty_n let_v he_o not_o satisfy_v himself_o as_o a_o political_a person_n with_o peace_n and_o honesty_n but_o if_o it_o please_v god_n to_o bless_v he_o with_o they_o strive_v by_o way_n of_o gratitude_n to_o return_v the_o other_o for_o thyself_o upon_o the_o subject_a you_o have_v a_o duteous_a interest_n in_o they_o all_o though_o somewhat_o different_a yet_o so_o great_a as_o to_o promote_v the_o remote_a from_o your_o power_n truth_n and_o holiness_n you_o see_v how_o the_o lord_n be_v please_v to_o join_v they_o in_o promise_n jer._n 33.6_o behold_v i_o will_v give_v unto_o they_o health_n etc._n etc._n what_o we_o have_v lay_v up_o in_o promise_n we_o ought_v to_o strive_v each_o of_o we_o in_o our_o call_n which_o may_v confer_v something_o to_o it_o to_o draw_v that_o forth_o those_o that_o establish_v a_o last_a peace_n must_v build_v it_o upon_o these_o two_o column_n without_o which_o it_o will_v inevitable_o ruin_v and_o those_o will_v be_v ruin_v that_o lie_n under_o it_o let_v it_o otherwise_o be_v lay_v upon_o the_o strong_a basis_n of_o policy_n i_o never_o read_v otherwise_o in_o the_o history_n of_o any_o church_n either_o jewish_a or_o christian_a but_o where_o either_o of_o they_o two_o perish_v either_o the_o government_n itself_o or_o at_o least_o the_o magistrate_n perish_v when_o god_n will_v in_o a_o vision_n represent_v to_o nebucadnezar_n and_o therein_o to_o every_o magistrate_n his_o charge_n he_o adumbrate_v tyranny_n as_o some_o term_n it_o consist_v as_o much_o in_o the_o no-execution_n of_o his_o power_n as_o in_o the_o licentious_a exceed_n of_o the_o bound_n of_o his_o just_a power_n it_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n to_o keep_v in_o measue_v though_o he_o must_v exceed_o endeavour_v it_o that_o he_o neither_o two_o much_o slacken_v nor_o too_o much_o straighten_v his_o golden_a rein_n for_o beside_o his_o own_o sin_n and_o danger_n herein_o it_o be_v too_o subject_a to_o the_o unadvised_a subject_n to_o murmur_v without_o just_a occasion_n sloth_n and_o baseness_n of_o spirit_n be_v as_o
