our_o good_a state_n and_o without_o a_o timely_a repentance_n and_o amendment_n exclude_v we_o out_o of_o heaven_n and_o however_o we_o may_v think_v fit_a to_o abate_v of_o those_o term_n by_o our_o loose_a opinion_n and_o false_a principle_n and_o make_v other_o judgement_n of_o ourselves_o by_o the_o wrong_a measure_n of_o a_o licentious_a age_n or_o as_o mistake_v and_o as_o licentious_a our_o religion_n do_v not_o 3._o there_o be_v some_o particular_a duty_n in_o christianity_n that_o seem_v very_o hard_a and_o difficult_a as_o well_o as_o the_o general_a term_n of_o it_o such_o as_o love_a enemy_n not_o revenge_v injury_n self-denial_n mortification_n and_o the_o like_a which_o though_o they_o be_v against_o the_o grain_n of_o our_o nature_n as_o some_o man_n think_v and_o as_o christian_n to_o love_v our_o enemy_n with_o the_o general_a act_n of_o charity_n due_a to_o all_o mankind_n not_o with_o the_o particular_a office_n of_o kindness_n due_a to_o our_o friend_n we_o must_v not_o revenge_v a_o injury_n to_o gratify_v a_o mere_a private_a and_o outrageous_a passion_n without_o regard_n to_o public_a good_a we_o must_v deny_v ourselves_o any_o worldly_a interest_n when_o it_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o our_o duty_n we_o must_v mortify_v every_o natural_a passion_n and_o sensual_a inclination_n so_o as_o to_o keep_v it_o within_o the_o bound_n of_o virtue_n and_o religion_n these_o be_v all_o agreeable_a to_o reason_n and_o prudence_n and_o to_o the_o law_n of_o civil_a government_n as_o well_o as_o to_o the_o principle_n of_o religion_n 4._o religion_n put_v a_o check_n and_o restraint_n not_o only_o upon_o our_o action_n but_o upon_o our_o word_n and_o our_o very_a thought_n and_o this_o be_v hard_a some_o think_v that_o their_o tongue_n shall_v not_o be_v their_o own_o nor_o their_o thought_n neither_o but_o that_o of_o every_o idle_a word_n they_o must_v give_v a_o account_n in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n and_o by_o our_o word_n we_o shall_v be_v condemn_v or_o justify_v as_o well_o as_o by_o our_o action_n mat._n 12.36_o 37._o and_o that_o our_o secret_a thought_n shall_v be_v tie_v up_o so_o that_o we_o must_v not_o harbour_v any_o wickedness_n even_o in_o our_o heart_n and_o thought_n mark_v 7.21_o now_o this_o however_o severe_a it_o seem_v yet_o if_o by_o idle_a word_n be_v mean_v only_o evil_a word_n as_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o it_o be_v such_o as_o those_o of_o slander_n and_o desamation_n of_o which_o our_o saviour_n there_o particular_o speak_v or_o such_o profane_a and_o lewd_a discourse_n as_o tend_v to_o affront_v heaven_n or_o to_o corrupt_v those_o who_o hear_v it_o and_o proceed_v from_o a_o malicious_a irreligious_a and_o corrupt_a mind_n this_o give_v such_o a_o vicious_a tincture_n even_o to_o our_o word_n that_o he_o who_o can_v better_o govern_v his_o tongue_n than_o thus_o to_o injure_v his_o brother_n or_o let_v fly_v at_o god_n and_o religion_n this_o man_n religion_n be_v vain_a as_o st._n james_n say_v jam._n 1.26_o if_o he_o pretend_v to_o any_o and_o he_o who_o by_o his_o mouth_n thus_o vent_v the_o exulcerate_v malice_n pride_n and_o uncharitableness_n of_o his_o heart_n and_o from_o such_o a_o unchristian_a temper_n call_v his_o brother_n fool_n or_o racha_n be_v in_o danger_n of_o god_n judgement_n and_o of_o hell-fire_n as_o our_o saviour_n say_v mat._n 5.22_o it_o be_v the_o venom_n and_o malignity_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o inward_a disposition_n that_o like_o a_o corrupt_a fountain_n poison_n and_o vitiate_v those_o ill_a stream_n that_o flow_v from_o it_o and_o this_o be_v the_o true_a plastic_a principle_n within_o we_o that_o form_n and_o denominate_v all_o our_o action_n which_o be_v but_o the_o fruit_n grow_v upon_o that_o root_n and_o as_o our_o saviour_n say_v a_o good_a tree_n bring_v forth_o good_a fruit_n and_o a_o corrupt_a tree_n that_o which_o be_v evil_a v._o 17_o 18._o of_o this_o chapter_n all_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v conceive_v and_o produce_v from_o the_o heart_n and_o god_n who_o see_v it_o there_o even_o before_o it_o come_v into_o act_n whenever_o it_o have_v the_o full_a consent_n of_o the_o will_n do_v very_o just_o condemn_v it_o and_o charge_v it_o upon_o we_o for_o as_o without_o this_o consent_n of_o the_o will_n no_o action_n be_v criminal_a before_o he_o so_o with_o it_o the_o crime_n be_v both_o specify_v commit_v and_o perfect_v though_o it_o go_v no_o further_o than_o the_o thought_n and_o the_o heart_n 5._o religion_n require_v our_o life_n to_o be_v useful_a as_o well_o as_o innocent_a and_o enjoin_v we_o not_o only_o to_o do_v no_o ill_a thing_n but_o to_o do_v all_o the_o good_a that_o we_o be_v able_a else_o it_o be_v but_o a_o negative_a and_o a_o useless_a virtue_n the_o easy_a and_o the_o soft_a side_n of_o it_o like_o the_o old_a principle_n of_o privation_n without_o the_o matter_n and_o form_n that_o be_v to_o give_v it_o a_o be_v and_o a_o substance_n we_o read_v in_o scripture_n not_o only_o of_o the_o wicked_a servant_n who_o be_v guilty_a of_o great_a crime_n misdemeanour_n and_o injury_n against_o his_o lord_n but_o of_o the_o unprofitable_a one_o who_o do_v no_o manner_n of_o good_a but_o be_v idle_a and_o useless_a in_o his_o service_n and_o for_o this_o reason_n alone_o be_v cast_v into_o outer_a darkness_n god_n will_v call_v every_o one_o of_o we_o to_o a_o strict_a and_o severe_a account_n how_o we_o have_v use_v and_o improve_v all_o the_o talent_n he_o commit_v to_o we_o all_o the_o power_n ability_n and_o opportunity_n of_o do_v good_a he_o have_v put_v into_o our_o hand_n and_o if_o like_a loiterer_n in_o his_o vineyard_n we_o have_v only_o feast_v ourselves_o with_o the_o fruit_n and_o delicacy_n of_o it_o and_o waste_v our_o idle_a time_n in_o ease_n and_o luxury_n and_o spend_v a_o vain_a and_o useless_a life_n in_o trifle_v and_o impertinent_a either_o pleasure_n or_o business_n and_o not_o labour_v at_o all_o in_o the_o great_a work_n and_o business_n of_o religion_n for_o which_o we_o be_v send_v into_o the_o world_n we_o must_v not_o at_o the_o last_o expect_v any_o wage_n from_o he_o but_o be_v punish_v for_o our_o useless_a idleness_n and_o great_a omission_n by_o the_o just_a distributer_n of_o reward_n and_o punishment_n who_o will_v render_v to_o all_o man_n according_a to_o their_o work_n and_o who_o expect_v we_o shall_v do_v all_o the_o good_a we_o can_v for_o the_o sake_n of_o heaven_n as_o well_o as_o abstain_v from_o all_o manner_n of_o evil_a for_o the_o sake_n of_o hell_n 6._o religion_n require_v the_o uniform_a practice_n of_o all_o virtue_n and_o the_o entire_a union_n and_o conjunction_n of_o all_o christian_a grace_n to_o make_v and_o constitute_v a_o good_a man_n whereas_o any_o single_a vice_n or_o wilful_a habit_n of_o sin_n will_v denominate_v and_o make_v a_o bad_a one_o so_o as_o to_o make_v he_o incapable_a of_o happiness_n and_o obnoxious_a to_o misery_n this_o be_v a_o undoubted_a truth_n in_o religion_n which_o require_v thou_o not_o the_o perfection_n of_o degree_n yet_o the_o perfection_n of_o part_n so_o that_o no_o plain_a virtue_n must_v be_v want_v nor_o no_o voluntary_a sin_n be_v allow_v without_o the_o certain_a danger_n of_o be_v exclude_v out_o of_o heaven_n as_o st._n james_n say_v he_o that_o shall_v keep_v the_o guilty_a of_o all_o resist_v and_o oppose_v all_o that_o divine_a power_n and_o authority_n which_o give_v force_n and_o sanction_n to_o every_o law_n and_o become_v liable_a to_o the_o same_o sort_n of_o punishment_n though_o not_o to_o the_o same_o equal_a degree_n of_o it_o the_o virtue_n of_o

disease_n that_o be_v incident_a to_o we_o but_o since_o these_o affect_v the_o mind_n more_o and_o the_o mind_n also_o by_o its_o close_a union_n and_o re-action_n upon_o the_o body_n do_v in_o that_o and_o therefore_o they_o be_v in_o brute_n we_o often_o see_v as_o well_o as_o man_n but_o the_o soul_n by_o be_v vital_o unite_v to_o the_o body_n have_v a_o preception_n and_o sensation_n body_n will_v alter_v and_o destroy_v it_o i_o come_v now_o to_o show_v how_o we_o may_v attain_v it_o which_o be_v the_o most_o considerable_a thing_n of_o all_o and_o when_o we_o have_v if_o we_o and_o it_o be_v a_o kind_a of_o create_v we_o again_o to_o new_a work_n a_o raise_v we_o from_o the_o dead_a a_o quicken_a a_o give_v we_o a_o new_a life_n in_o the_o scripture_n phrase_n when_o from_o bad_a he_o make_v we_o good_a one_o which_o be_v something_o great_a than_o create_v we_o at_o first_o because_o in_o the_o other_o there_o be_v no_o hindrance_n and_o obstacle_n in_o the_o subject_n as_o there_o be_v in_o this_o many_o be_v the_o hardship_n and_o difficulty_n that_o a_o sincere_a penitent_n find_v in_o overcome_v a_o unruly_a appetite_n a_o irregular_a passion_n a_o belove_a lust_n and_o inclination_n which_o be_v all_o make_v so_o by_o the_o strength_n of_o custom_n and_o long_a habit_n and_o which_o will_v have_v be_v much_o easy_a master_v have_v they_o not_o be_v so_o long_o indulge_v and_o grow_v upon_o he_o many_o a_o sinner_n when_o his_o reason_n be_v convince_v and_o he_o see_v the_o evil_a of_o his_o sin_n and_o will_v glad_o leave_v if_o a_o faint_a wish_n will_v do_v it_o yet_o be_v such_o a_o slave_n to_o they_o by_o long_a custom_n that_o they_o lead_v he_o captive_n at_o their_o pleasure_n and_o he_o can_v break_v the_o fetter_n and_o shake_v off_o the_o chain_n that_o he_o have_v make_v himself_o and_o which_o be_v very_o uneasy_a to_o he_o now_o all_o this_o a_o man_n be_v free_a from_o by_o a_o early_a religion_n and_o a_o constant_a obedience_n and_o be_v never_o engage_v in_o the_o way_n of_o wickedness_n which_o be_v so_o hard_a to_o get_v out_o of_o 3._o there_o can_v be_v that_o full_a comfort_n and_o security_n in_o the_o return_n and_o repentance_n of_o a_o sinner_n as_o in_o a_o constant_a and_o unbroken_a obedience_n all_o a_o man_n life_n for_o though_o there_o be_v certain_a pardon_n promise_v and_o assure_v to_o such_o a_o penitent_a yet_o no_o man_n can_v be_v so_o sure_a that_o he_o have_v full_o repent_v of_o any_o sin_n as_o that_o he_o have_v once_o commit_v it_o but_o there_o will_v be_v some_o fear_n and_o doubt_n and_o misgiving_n still_o in_o his_o mind_n upon_o the_o remembrance_n of_o it_o which_o he_o can_v never_o be_v so_o free_a from_o as_o if_o he_o have_v never_o be_v guilty_a of_o it_o and_o it_o be_v fit_a indeed_o this_o shall_v always_o be_v that_o a_o penitent_n shall_v be_v always_o humble_a and_o a_o little_a afraid_a and_o shall_v not_o be_v full_o confident_a as_o if_o he_o have_v be_v always_o innocent_a fear_n be_v the_o necessary_a punishment_n and_o consequent_a of_o sin_n and_o guilt_n and_o the_o sinner_n shall_v tremble_v at_o the_o thought_n of_o god_n judgement_n and_o the_o desert_n of_o his_o sin_n though_o they_o be_v not_o inflict_v upon_o he_o and_o though_o he_o have_v his_o pardon_n seal_v in_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n yet_o he_o ought_v to_o look_v upon_o it_o with_o tear_n in_o his_o eye_n and_o a_o mixture_n both_o of_o joy_n and_o sorrow_n the_o gospel_n declare_v only_o a_o general_a pardon_n to_o those_o who_o repent_v but_o no_o man_n can_v see_v his_o own_o name_n particular_o express_v in_o it_o nor_o be_v he_o sure_a of_o it_o any_o far_a than_o he_o be_v of_o his_o repentance_n and_o a_o man_n of_o fear_n and_o caution_n and_o not_o of_o presumption_n will_v have_v some_o doubt_n that_o his_o repentance_n be_v not_o so_o full_a and_o so_o perfect_a as_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v and_o be_v once_o a_o malefactor_n condemn_v both_o by_o god_n and_o his_o own_o conscience_n though_o he_o have_v reasonable_a hope_n of_o pardon_n yet_o will_v be_v more_o afraid_a to_o be_v judge_v than_o if_o his_o conscience_n have_v whole_o acquit_v he_o and_o he_o can_v never_o have_v charge_v himself_o with_o any_o great_a crime_n for_o that_o will_v strike_v he_o with_o more_o certain_a fear_n than_o he_o can_v have_v certain_a hope_n of_o his_o particular_a pardon_n 4._o neither_o shall_v such_o a_o penitent_a be_v so_o much_o in_o god_n favour_n or_o so_o high_o reward_v by_o he_o as_o a_o man_n of_o more_o constant_a and_o great_a virtue_n this_o be_v a_o rule_n i_o think_v of_o eternal_a justice_n and_o follow_v from_o god_n render_v to_o all_o man_n according_a to_o their_o work_n as_o the_o scripture_n speak_v which_o will_v not_o be_v if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o proportion_n of_o the_o reward_n to_o the_o work_n as_o well_o as_o a_o reward_n in_o general_n god_n indeed_o out_o of_o his_o great_a grace_n will_v accept_v a_o great_a sinner_n upon_o his_o repentance_n and_o receive_v he_o into_o his_o favour_n and_o pass_v by_o and_o forgive_v his_o past_a offence_n but_o it_o be_v his_o become_n a_o good_a man_n qualify_v and_o entitle_v he_o to_o this_o for_o god_n can_v love_v no_o other_o and_o the_o more_o any_o be_v a_o good_a man_n the_o more_o he_o will_v be_v belove_v by_o he_o and_o the_o more_o high_o reward_v at_o the_o last_o day_n it_o be_v great_a mercy_n and_o favour_n in_o god_n and_o what_o christ_n have_v purchase_v for_o we_o to_o accept_v of_o a_o imperfect_a and_o after_o goodness_n and_o break_a obedience_n instead_o of_o what_o be_v whole_a and_o entire_a which_o be_v his_o due_n and_o not_o punish_v we_o for_o our_o past_a sin_n and_o disobedience_n after_o we_o have_v leave_v they_o as_o he_o may_v do_v in_o strict_a justice_n but_o still_o it_o be_v only_o our_o obedience_n and_o goodness_n which_o be_v after_o our_o disobedience_n and_o sin_n be_v call_v repentance_n be_v acceptable_a and_o please_a to_o god_n and_o it_o will_v be_v more_o so_o have_v it_o be_v more_o constant_a unbroken_a and_o uninterrupted_a and_o it_o be_v only_o for_o that_o as_o a_o qualification_n and_o condition_n in_o ourselves_o for_o which_o he_o will_v reward_v we_o and_o the_o more_o and_o great_a that_o be_v the_o great_a shall_v be_v our_o reward_n indeed_o in_o case_n a_o penitent_n be_v after_o his_o sin_n bring_v to_o love_n much_o and_o to_o obey_v much_o and_o to_o be_v more_o abundant_o zealous_a in_o good_a work_n and_o do_v his_o duty_n to_o make_v amends_o as_o much_o as_o he_o be_v able_a for_o his_o past_a failure_n and_o repair_v the_o divine_a honour_n and_o express_v his_o gratitude_n for_o the_o mercy_n show_v he_o and_o so_o take_v care_n to_o rise_v to_o high_a degree_n of_o virtue_n and_o perform_v more_o signal_n act_n of_o obedience_n so_o that_o his_o fall_n make_v he_o rise_v high_o and_o he_o redeem_v his_o loss_n with_o great_a gain_n and_o improve_n more_o in_o grace_n and_o goodness_n afterward_o this_o shall_v entitle_v he_o to_o great_a reward_n and_o to_o god_n special_a favour_n not_o bare_o because_o he_o repent_v but_o because_o upon_o his_o repentance_n he_o become_v a_o better_a man_n and_o go_v fast_o and_o make_v more_o progress_n in_o the_o way_n of_o virtue_n after_o he_o have_v get_v into_o they_o but_o he_o that_o never_o wander_v out_o of_o they_o nor_o never_o stray_v into_o the_o way_n of_o sin_n but_o always_o keep_v on_o in_o the_o path_n of_o virtue_n which_o he_o be_v early_o enter_v into_o be_v a_o thousand_o time_n more_o likely_a to_o go_v far_o and_o make_v a_o great_a progress_n in_o virtue_n and_o attain_v to_o high_a degree_n and_o improvement_n of_o it_o than_o the_o other_o and_o consequent_o to_o be_v more_o high_o reward_v by_o god_n the_o impartial_a judge_n and_o distributer_n of_o reward_n and_o punishment_n at_o the_o last_o day_n there_o be_v several_a mansion_n in_o our_o father_n house_n and_o several_a degree_n of_o glory_n in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n those_o who_o have_v be_v more_o constant_o and_o more_o high_o virtuous_a and_o obedient_a or_o have_v do_v or_o suffer_v more_o for_o christ_n and_o his_o religion_n these_o shall_v have_v crown_n of_o great_a weight_n and_o brightness_n and_o shall_v shine_v in_o a_o high_a orb_n among_o those_o star_n of_o heaven_n who_o differ_v from_o one_o and_o another_o in_o glory_n according_a to_o their_o different_a virtue_n and_o attainment_n 5._o this_o make_v we_o more_o true_o christian_n and_o more_o the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o live_v more_o answerable_o to_o the_o end_n and_o design_n of_o our_o religion_n for_o though_o christianity_n be_v to_o restore_v and_o recover_v lose_v and_o undo_v mankind_n and_o do_v it_o chief_o by_o the_o benefit_n of_o repentance_n which_o be_v the_o great_a duty_n and_o the_o
