will_v find_v very_o effectual_a as_o for_o the_o intention_n of_o thy_o affection_n by_o raise_v they_o to_o a_o high_a pitch_n so_o for_o the_o attention_n of_o thy_o mind_n in_o keep_v it_o from_o wander_a and_o rove_a after_o worldly_a thought_n and_o imagination_n 4_o but_o if_o notwithstanding_o thou_o find_v that_o in_o pray_v thy_o mind_n and_o heart_n have_v be_v sometime_o take_v up_o and_o possess_v with_o worldly_a thought_n and_o distraction_n it_o will_v be_v a_o good_a course_n in_o thy_o private_a prayer_n to_o repeat_v that_o again_o which_o so_o cold_o and_o careless_o pass_v from_o thou_o labour_v in_o thy_o repetition_n to_o repel_v all_o wander_a thought_n and_o to_o pour_v forth_o those_o petition_n again_o after_o a_o more_o hearty_a manner_n for_o by_o impose_v this_o task_n upon_o thyself_o thou_o will_v become_v more_o wary_a and_o watchful_a over_o thy_o thought_n lest_o otherwise_o thou_o be_v enforce_v to_o continue_v long_o at_o that_o exercise_n unto_o which_o through_o the_o depravation_n of_o thy_o nature_n thou_o be_v so_o backward_o and_o averse_a ii_o as_o preparation_n be_v necessary_a before_o prayer_n so_o in_o prayer_n divers_a thing_n be_v require_v as_o 1_o faith_n prayer_n must_v be_v make_v in_o faith_n which_o our_o saviour_n plain_o express_v 24_o where_o he_o say_v whatsoever_o thing_n you_o desire_v when_o think_v that_o have_v salute_v god_n by_o prayer_n and_o read_v his_o word_n in_o the_o morning_n 38._o thou_o may_v take_v thy_o leave_n of_o he_o all_o the_o day_n after_o but_o second_o thy_o plotter_n of_o all_o treason_n against_o god_n the_o pander_n of_o all_o other_o lust_n so_o much_o the_o apostle_n james_n express_v 15_o when_o lust_n have_v conceive_v it_o bring_v forth_o sin_n lustful_a thought_n be_v conceive_v in_o the_o heart_n they_o soon_o bring_v forth_o sin_n break_v forth_o into_o act_n of_o filthiness_n and_o uncleanness_n 3_o consider_v that_o by_o our_o thought_n especial_o will_v the_o lord_n judge_v we_o at_o the_o last_o day_n 5_o when_o he_o will_v make_v manifest_a the_o counsel_n of_o the_o heart_n as_o the_o apostle_n express_v it_o and_o rom._n 2._o 16._o god_n have_v appoint_v a_o day_n wherein_o he_o will_v judge_v the_o secret_n of_o man_n by_o jesus_n christ._n then_o the_o swarm_n of_o our_o vain_a and_o evil_a thought_n shall_v be_v discover_v and_o lay_v open_a to_o our_o eternal_a shame_n before_o god_n angel_n and_o man_n without_o true_a and_o unfeigned_a repentance_n 4_o evil_a and_o vain_a thought_n without_o true_a and_o unfeigned_a repentance_n will_v sink_v our_o soul_n to_o hell_n such_o of_o you_o therefore_o as_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o your_o thought_n but_o delight_v yourselves_o in_o vain_a and_o wicked_a thought_n in_o lustful_a and_o unclean_a thought_n and_o that_o impenitent_o how_o can_v you_o escape_v the_o vengeance_n of_o hell_n i_o deny_v not_o but_o the_o best_a man_n through_o the_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n in_o they_o be_v subject_a to_o vain_a and_o wicked_a thought_n but_o these_o be_v their_o grief_n and_o their_o burden_n against_o which_o they_o strive_v and_o for_o thought_n begin_v to_o arise_v in_o thy_o heart_n strive_v to_o put_v they_o out_o by_o fix_v thy_o meditation_n upon_o some_o serious_a matter_n when_o earthly_a worldly_a thought_n begin_v to_o arise_v in_o thy_o heart_n fix_v thy_o meditation_n upon_o some_o spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a thought_n when_o any_o lustful_a and_o impure_a thought_n begin_v to_o arise_v in_o thy_o heart_n fix_v thy_o meditation_n upon_o some_o holy_a and_o good_a thought_n think_v of_o the_o excellency_n and_o necessity_n of_o holiness_n 14_o without_o which_o no_o man_n shall_v see_v the_o lord_n 5_o watchfulness_n over_o thy_o action_n be_v to_o commend_v all_o thy_o action_n and_o business_n unto_o god_n by_o prayer_n not_o enterprise_v any_o thing_n without_o seek_v direction_n assistance_n and_o a_o blessing_n from_o god_n for_o as_o the_o psalmist_n speak_v 2_o it_o be_v vain_a for_o you_o to_o rise_v up_o early_o to_o sit_v up_o late_o to_o eat_v the_o bread_n of_o sorrow_n unless_o he_o to_o make_v the_o sacrament_n effectual_a to_o thy_o comfort_n effectual_a to_o the_o mortify_n of_o thy_o lust_n to_o the_o strengthen_n of_o thy_o grace_n especial_o to_o the_o confirm_v of_o thy_o faith_n in_o the_o assurance_n of_o the_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o thy_o sin_n etc._n etc._n iii_o have_v show_v the_o duty_n antecedent_n come_v we_o now_o to_o the_o duty_n they_o in_o like_a manner_n on_o the_o day_n when_o god_n child_n present_v themselves_o before_o the_o lord_n in_o that_o solemn_a ordinance_n satan_n will_v be_v sure_a to_o appear_v among_o they_o with_o god_n while_o you_o be_v at_o the_o sacrament_n you_o shall_v exercise_v your_o repentance_n in_o both_o these_o particular_n 1_o you_o shall_v labour_v to_o be_v affect_v with_o a_o true_a grief_n and_o sorrow_n foâ—_n your_o sin_n to_o that_o end_n serious_o meditate_v of_o the_o manifold_a suffering_n of_o christ_n for_o certain_o a_o due_a and_o serious_a meditation_n of_o what_o who_o shall_v build_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o they_o and_o yet_o how_o many_o foolish_a christian_n be_v there_o who_o build_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o other_o thing_n beside_o jesus_n christ._n as_o 1_o some_o upon_o their_o freedom_n from_o scandalous_a sin_n they_o be_v not_o so_o bad_a as_o other_o man_n and_o thereupon_o flatter_v themselves_o with_o a_o conceit_n of_o their_o good_a estate_n yea_o and_o hope_v of_o salvation_n which_o be_v the_o deceit_n of_o the_o proud_a pharisee_fw-mi 11._o who_o think_v himself_o a_o good_a man_n because_o he_o desire_v grace_n but_o if_o you_o rest_v content_v with_o your_o desire_n after_o grace_n and_o goodness_n and_o not_o go_v unto_o jesus_n christ_n the_o fountain_n of_o all_o grace_n and_o goodness_n you_o may_v lie_v down_o in_o sorrow_n and_o fall_v short_a of_o eternal_a life_n and_o salvation_n 3_o other_o build_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o their_o bare_a outward_a profession_n of_o religion_n they_o have_v be_v baptize_v and_o profess_v the_o true_a christian_a faith_n and_o thereupon_o think_v themselves_o as_o good_a christian_n as_o the_o best_a 19_o but_o as_o christ_n curse_v the_o figtree_n which_o have_v leaf_n only_o and_o no_o fruit_n so_o will_v he_o curse_v they_o who_o bear_v the_o leaf_n of_o profession_n but_o want_v the_o fruit_n of_o a_o godly_a life_n and_o conversation_n and_o it_o be_v like_a to_o fare_v with_o they_o as_o it_o do_v with_o the_o five_o foolish_a virgin_n who_o have_v their_o lamp_n of_o profession_n as_o well_o as_o the_o wise_a virgin_n but_o for_o want_v of_o oil_n in_o their_o lamp_n i._n e._n of_o grace_n in_o their_o heart_n be_v shut_v out_o of_o the_o bride-chamber_n i._n e._n out_o of_o heaven_n which_o be_v the_o bride-chamber_n of_o jesus_n christ._n 4_o other_o build_v and_o bottom_n their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o their_o civil_a righteousness_n and_o moral_a honesty_n their_o just_a and_o upright_o deal_n with_o man_n and_o the_o like_a when_o as_o many_o heathen_a who_o have_v no_o knowledge_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o so_o fall_v short_a of_o heaven_n have_v go_v further_o in_o morality_n and_o civil_a righteousness_n than_o these_o man_n 5_o other_o build_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o their_o religious_a righteousness_n their_o frequent_a performance_n of_o holy_a and_o religious_a duty_n they_o be_v frequent_a in_o hear_v pray_v read_v partake_v of_o the_o lord_n supper_n etc._n etc._n and_o hereupon_o flatter_v themselves_o with_o a_o hope_n of_o salvation_n whereas_o their_o best_a service_n shall_v they_o be_v weigh_v in_o the_o balance_n of_o the_o sanctuary_n will_v be_v find_v too_o light_a and_o insufficient_a to_o salvation_n be_v full_a of_o weakness_n infirmity_n and_o imperfection_n for_o which_o the_o lord_n may_v just_o condemn_v they_o shall_v he_o deal_v with_o they_o according_a to_o the_o rigour_n of_o his_o justice_n 6_o other_o build_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o their_o sorrow_n and_o humiliation_n find_v their_o heart_n in_o some_o measure_n affect_v with_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n especial_o rest_n conceive_v that_o christ_n have_v promise_v rest_n and_o peace_n yea_o life_n and_o salvation_n unto_o all_o that_o find_v their_o heart_n affect_v with_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n without_o any_o more_o ado_n whereas_o i_o conceive_v it_o be_v not_o so_o much_o a_o promise_n of_o rest_n and_o salvation_n unto_o humble_a soul_n as_o a_o invitation_n unto_o such_o because_o salvation_n upon_o their_o work_n of_o charity_n think_v to_o purchase_v heaven_n by_o their_o good_a work_n and_o so_o whole_o exclude_v christ_n merit_n which_o they_o ground_n upon_o that_o sentence_n of_o absolution_n pronounce_v by_o our_o saviour_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n unto_o his_o elect_n 34_o wherein_o he_o give_v heaven_n to_o they_o who_o have_v express_v their_o charity_n to_o his_o poor_a member_n in_o feed_v clothing_n they_o and_o the_o like_a whereas_o our_o saviour_n instance_v in_o these_o work_n of_o charity_n as_o the_o fruit_n of_o their_o faith_n whereby_o they_o do_v evidence_n their_o faith_n to_o be_v a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n which_o manifest_v its_o life_n by_o those_o work_n of_o charity_n so_o that_o work_v of_o charity_n in_o themselves_o can_v be_v no_o good_a ground_n to_o bottom_v your_o salvation_n upon_o but_o only_a faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n which_o be_v ever_o accompany_v with_o work_n of_o charity_n if_o true_a and_o sound_a 9_o other_o bottom_n their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n they_o will_v confess_v themselves_o to_o be_v poor_a wretched_a sinful_a creature_n but_o they_o hope_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n will_v pardon_v their_o sin_n and_o accept_v their_o poor_a service_n thus_o many_o make_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n to_o eik_v out_o their_o own_o righteousness_n and_o so_o both_o put_v together_o they_o think_v will_v be_v a_o mean_n of_o atonement_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n yea_o and_o of_o obtain_v eternal_a life_n and_o salvation_n but_o such_o do_v wonderful_o mistake_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o god_n mercy_n which_o be_v not_o to_o eik_v out_o our_o righteousness_n but_o to_o show_v we_o our_o unrighteousness_n and_o misery_n and_o then_o to_o show_v we_o jesus_n christ_n the_o perfection_n of_o his_o righteousness_n the_o all-sufficiency_n of_o his_o sacrifice_n with_o his_o willingness_n to_o receive_v all_o poor_a sinner_n that_o will_v come_v unto_o he_o and_o then_o to_o stir_v up_o our_o heart_n to_o receive_v jesus_n christ_n as_o our_o priest_n prophet_n and_o king_n and_o to_o rest_v upon_o he_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n and_o thus_o may_v i_o go_v on_o show_v you_o the_o many_o false_a and_o rot_a foundation_n upon_o which_o the_o great_a part_n of_o man_n do_v build_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n whereas_o in_o truth_n christ_n be_v the_o only_a true_a solid_a foundation_n whereon_o we_o can_v safe_o build_v the_o hope_n of_o our_o salvation_n 11_o and_o therefore_o say_v the_o apostle_n israelite_n cure_n of_o the_o sting_n of_o the_o fiery_a serpent_n and_o that_o be_v by_o look_v upon_o the_o brazen_a serpent_n for_o as_o the_o israelite_n by_o look_v upon_o the_o brazen_a serpent_n be_v perfect_o cure_v of_o the_o sting_n of_o the_o fiery_a serpent_n in_o like_a manner_n all_o poor_a sinner_n sensible_a of_o the_o sting_n of_o sin_n by_o look_v with_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n upon_o jesus_n christ_n lift_v up_o upon_o the_o cross_n shall_v be_v perfect_o cure_v of_o the_o sting_n of_o their_o sin_n this_o application_n of_o that_o type_n our_o saviour_n himself_o make_v 15_o for_o say_v he_o as_o moses_n lift_v up_o the_o serpent_n in_o the_o wilderness_n even_o so_o must_v the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v lift_v up_o that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v everlasting_a life_n so_o that_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n be_v the_o only_a mean_n of_o partake_v of_o christ_n and_o of_o salvation_n by_o he_o what_o this_o faith_n be_v which_o make_v we_o partaker_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o salvation_n by_o he_o i_o have_v former_o show_v in_o the_o direction_n for_o the_o worthy_a receive_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n how_o shall_v the_o consideration_n hereof_o stir_v you_o up_o to_o labour_v above_o all_o thing_n to_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n that_o be_v to_o go_v whole_o out_o of_o yourselves_o unto_o 2_o the_o embrace_v of_o some_o truth_n 3_o the_o practise_v of_o some_o duty_n the_o let_n and_o impediment_n be_v of_o two_o sort_n 1_o such_o as_o keep_v natural_a man_n and_o woman_n from_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ._n 2_o such_o as_o keep_v off_o many_o a_o sincere_a brokenhearted_a sinner_n i._o the_o let_v and_o impediment_n that_o keep_v off_o natural_a man_n and_o woman_n from_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n be_v these_o and_o such_o like_a 1_o a_o love_n of_o their_o lust_n for_o this_o man_n general_o know_v that_o as_o dagon_n fall_v down_o before_o the_o ark_n so_o
