his_o glory_n to_o appear_v for_o his_o cause_n even_o these_o desire_n of_o his_o be_v spiritual_a although_o not_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o they_o at_o least_o for_o the_o end_n of_o they_o but_o now_o my_o brethren_n on_o the_o other_o side_n he_o that_o have_v not_o christ_n spirit_n desire_v these_o outward_a blessing_n that_o he_o may_v consume_v they_o on_o his_o lust_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v jam._n 4.3_o you_o ask_v and_o receive_v not_o because_o you_o ask_v amiss_o that_o you_o may_v consume_v it_o upon_o your_o lust_n that_o you_o may_v make_v provision_n for_o the_o flesh_n with_o it_o and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v oil_n to_o nourish_v and_o to_o feed_v the_o sinful_a flame_n that_o be_v within_o you_o and_o thus_o it_o be_v my_o brethren_n with_o a_o multitude_n pleasure_n and_o desire_n they_o will_v be_v in_o place_n and_o power_n that_o they_o may_v raise_v their_o name_n and_o family_n that_o they_o may_v swell_v and_o swagger_v over_o their_o inferior_n that_o they_o may_v plague_v their_o enemy_n and_o pleasure_v those_o that_o be_v observant_a of_o they_o they_o will_v have_v wealth_n and_o riches_n in_o abundance_n that_o they_o may_v swimm_n in_o full_a delight_n and_o fare_v delicious_o every_o day_n agur_n measure_v the_o conveniency_n or_o inconveniency_n of_o his_o outward_a state_n as_o it_o will_v fit_v he_o more_o or_o less_o for_o god_n service_n not_o poverty_n lest_o i_o deny_v thou_o not_o riches_n leave_v i_o forget_v thou_o but_o these_o man_n measure_v it_o by_o nothing_o but_o their_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o so_o their_o prayer_n serve_v their_o lust_n and_o they_o will_v have_v god_n himself_o to_o serve_v they_o too_o if_o they_o can_v prevail_v with_o he_o and_o be_v such_o desire_n as_o these_o like_a to_o be_v raise_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n what_o will_v the_o spirit_n stir_v man_n up_o to_o pray_v for_o any_o thing_n to_o nourish_v and_o maintain_v the_o flesh_n the_o carnal_a part_n which_o be_v the_o spirit_n enemy_n the_o flesh_n lu_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n lu_v against_o the_o flesh_n for_o those_o two_o be_v contrary_a one_o to_o another_o and_o will_v these_o symptom_n follow_v viz._n 1._o because_o they_o be_v so_o full_a of_o fear_n they_o walk_v so_o sad_o and_o diject_o faith_n in_o the_o promise_n will_v fill_v the_o heart_n with_o joy_n and_o comfort_n in_o the_o worst_a of_o time_n and_o the_o sharp_a of_o suffering_n believe_v we_o rejoice_v with_o the_o apostle_n and_o that_o with_o joy_n unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a 1_o pet._n 1.8_o you_o can_v think_v of_o any_o trial_n any_o trouble_n whether_o inward_a in_o the_o soul_n or_o outward_a in_o the_o body_n name_n estate_n but_o there_o be_v a_o promise_n for_o it_o to_o clear_v and_o comfort_v and_o support_v the_o soul_n in_o it_o and_o if_o the_o promise_n be_v believe_v the_o soul_n can_v be_v void_a of_o comfort_n it_o will_v revive_v the_o sad_a heart_n it_o be_v for_o want_v of_o faith_n that_o man_n be_v so_o oppress_v with_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n 2._o it_o be_v too_o evident_a that_o man_n do_v not_o believe_v the_o promise_n of_o god_n because_o they_o be_v so_o full_a of_o doubt_n and_o fear_n so_o full_a of_o endless_a care_n and_o trouble_n and_o distraction_n brethren_n there_o be_v no_o end_n of_o the_o care_n and_o fear_n of_o man_n of_o their_o question_n and_o debate_n until_o they_o come_v to_o pitch_v upon_o the_o promise_n till_o they_o come_v to_o rest_v on_o this_o god_n have_v say_v it_o i_o have_v god_n in_o bond_n for_o it_o he_o have_v undertake_v it_o who_o live_v for_o ever_o in_o who_o be_v everlasting_a strength_n the_o soul_n will_v never_o be_v at_o quiet_a it_o will_v be_v shake_v as_o the_o tree_n in_o the_o forest_n as_o isa_n 7.2_o oh_o think_v a_o poor_a wretch_n if_o i_o shall_v live_v till_o i_o be_v blind_a till_o i_o be_v impotent_a till_o i_o have_v spend_v all_o what_o shall_v i_o do_v what_o shall_v my_o wife_n and_o child_n do_v what_o if_o i_o lose_v such_o a_o friend_n or_o such_o a_o comfort_n so_o rich_a man_n have_v as_o much_o trouble_n what_o if_o the_o time_n shall_v frown_v upon_o i_o what_o if_o malicious_a man_n shall_v swear_v against_o i_o what_o if_o the_o enemy_n break_v in_o upon_o i_o and_o plunder_v i_o etc._n etc._n and_o a_o thousand_o of_o these_o doubt_n and_o fear_n man_n have_v and_o whence_o be_v all_o these_o true_o they_o be_v not_o so_o much_o from_o the_o greatness_n of_o their_o danger_n as_o from_o the_o smallness_n of_o their_o faith_n o_o you_o of_o little_a faith_n wherefore_o do_v you_o doubt_v whence_o be_v your_o doubt_n trouble_n and_o perplexity_n but_o because_o you_o do_v not_o keep_v the_o word_n of_o promise_n in_o your_o heart_n by_o believe_v you_o do_v not_o act_v your_o faith_n upon_o that_o word_n of_o god_n that_o he_o will_v never_o fail_v you_o nor_o forsake_v you_o belove_a let_v a_o man_n look_v where_o he_o will_v there_o be_v a_o a_o man_n can_v never_o be_v secure_a in_o they_o and_o therefore_o if_o you_o will_v be_v settle_v and_o secure_v for_o the_o future_a build_v on_o god_n and_o on_o the_o promise_n say_v not_o i_o have_v such_o a_o parent_n such_o a_o friend_n and_o he_o will_v provide_v for_o i_o he_o will_v see_v i_o shall_v not_o want_v i_o have_v such_o income_n by_o the_o year_n such_o a_o trade_n such_o a_o estate_n such_o a_o power_n on_o my_o side_n the_o conclusion_n will_v not_o hold_v but_o say_v rather_o i_o have_v such_o a_o god_n and_o such_o a_o promise_n god_n have_v say_v that_o he_o will_v feed_v i_o and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v be_v feed_v god_n have_v say_v that_o he_o will_v keep_v i_o and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v be_v keep_v god_n have_v say_v that_o he_o will_v pardon_v i_o and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v be_v forgive_v 3._o it_o be_v apparent_a that_o man_n do_v not_o believe_v the_o promise_n because_o they_o be_v inconstant_a and_o uncertain_a in_o their_o way_n they_o know_v not_o what_o to_o do_v nor_o where_o to_o live_v nor_o what_o side_n to_o stick_v to_o they_o be_v toss_v to_o and_o fro_o they_o be_v on_o and_o off_o again_o and_o what_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o this_o true_o it_o be_v for_o want_v of_o faith_n upon_o the_o promise_n for_o that_o will_v settle_v they_o and_o root_v they_o but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n say_v god_n and_o bind_v it_o with_o a_o strong_a asseveration_n too_o if_o you_o will_v not_o believe_v sure_o you_o shall_v not_o be_v establish_v isa_n 7.9_o you_o will_v be_v thus_o unstable_a still_o and_o fickle_a still_o unless_o you_o pitch_v by_o faith_n upon_o the_o promise_n 4._o it_o be_v apparent_a that_o man_n do_v not_o believe_v the_o promise_n because_o they_o will_v suffer_v nothing_o for_o it_o bond_n imprisonment_n when_o they_o be_v stone_v saw_v asunder_o what_o make_v they_o able_a to_o endure_v such_o thing_n and_o not_o to_o accept_v deliverance_n when_o it_o be_v offer_v if_o they_o love_n that_o they_o shall_v never_o break_v forth_o into_o bitterness_n against_o their_o brethren_n but_o while_o they_o have_v such_o a_o deal_n of_o pride_n among_o they_o while_o they_o be_v so_o makebate_n it_o have_v a_o special_a hand_n and_o be_v a_o violent_a eager_a stickler_n in_o all_o the_o quarrel_n that_o be_v drive_v to_o and_o fro_o among_o man_n from_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o man_n be_v so_o inflexible_a and_o so_o extreme_o stiff_a in_o their_o opinion_n that_o they_o will_v abate_v nothing_o nor_o yield_v to_o nothing_o for_o quietness_n and_o peace_n sake_n it_o be_v their_o love_n not_o to_o the_o truth_n but_o to_o themselves_o it_o be_v their_o self-love_n and_o so_o it_o be_v the_o selfishness_n of_o man_n that_o make_v they_o so_o intent_n upon_o their_o own_o thing_n that_o they_o will_v have_v the_o utmost_a in_o a_o business_n and_o urge_v extremity_n of_o right_n and_o will_v not_o part_v with_o any_o thing_n almost_o to_o purchase_v precious_a peace_n it_o be_v because_o they_o love_v themselves_o too_o well_o and_o because_o there_o be_v so_o much_o of_o this_o even_a in_o the_o saint_n this_o make_v it_o wonderful_o hard_a for_o they_o to_o be_v at_o unity_n among_o themselves_o i_o may_v name_v other_o thing_n in_o which_o they_o be_v too_o much_o alike_o to_o close_v so_o near_o as_o they_o shall_v but_o these_o shall_v serve_v for_o that_o branch_n it_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n for_o the_o saint_n to_o live_v at_o unity_n among_o themselves_o because_o as_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n in_o which_o they_o be_v too_o much_o alike_o so_o there_o be_v other_o thing_n in_o which_o they_o differ_v overmuch_o so_o close_o so_o near_o as_o they_o shall_v together_o for_o difference_n make_v division_n many_o time_n even_o among_o christ_n disciple_n and_o that_o you_o may_v the_o better_a look_n into_o the_o business_n i_o will_v show_v you_o many_o thing_n in_o which_o they_o differ_v many_o time_n which_o render_v a_o conjunction_n and_o a_o perfect_a union_n infinite_o hard_a to_o be_v make_v and_o keep_v among_o they_o 1._o they_o be_v of_o divers_a temper_n and_o of_o divers_a constitution_n and_o those_o will_v hardly_o close_o together_o as_o divers_a string_n unless_o they_o be_v of_o purpose_n tune_v alike_o will_v not_o be_v unison_n they_o will_v not_o be_v of_o one_o sound_n they_o may_v be_v very_o sweet_a apart_o but_o if_o you_o strike_v they_o all_o together_o they_o will_v make_v a_o discord_n so_o it_o be_v in_o this_o case_n some_o of_o the_o saint_n be_v of_o a_o melancholy_n sad_a and_o other_o of_o a_o sanguine_a cheerful_a temper_n the_o melancholy_n do_v not_o like_o the_o cheerful_a the_o cheerful_a do_v not_o like_o the_o melancholy_a saint_n or_o if_o he_o like_v he_o in_o his_o judgement_n he_o care_v not_o to_o converse_v with_o he_o or_o not_o so_o much_o at_o least_o as_o with_o another_o because_o he_o do_v not_o suit_v his_o disposition_n one_o saint_n by_o reason_n of_o his_o constitution_n which_o grace_n do_v never_o whole_o alter_v be_v very_o hot_a and_o very_a active_a another_o saint_n be_v very_o cold_a and_o very_o dull_a those_o two_o be_v so_o unlike_a will_v continual_o be_v dislike_a one_o another_o and_o it_o may_v be_v censure_v so_o that_o it_o will_v be_v very_o hard_a to_o bring_v they_o to_o so_o near_o a_o close_a as_o shall_v be_v between_o christ_n disciple_n 2._o they_o be_v of_o divers_a station_n and_o condition_n in_o the_o world_n and_o in_o the_o church_n some_o be_v high_a and_o some_o be_v low_a some_o be_v rich_a and_o some_o be_v poor_a the_o high_a be_v ready_a to_o despise_v the_o low_a the_o low_a be_v ready_a to_o envy_v the_o high_a the_o rich_a be_v ready_a to_o despise_v the_o poor_a the_o poor_a etc._n etc._n one_o of_o they_o will_v be_v apt_a on_o all_o occasion_n to_o be_v perk_v at_o the_o other_o and_o this_o will_v make_v a_o perfect_a union_n extreme_o difficult_a between_o they_o 3._o they_o be_v of_o divers_a interest_n by_o reason_n of_o their_o calling_n judgement_n opinion_n habitation_n outward_a substance_n and_o estate_n and_o difference_n will_v arise_v and_o grow_v from_o all_o these_o so_o that_o it_o will_v be_v hard_a to_o keep_v they_o quiet_a and_o to_o hold_v they_o close_o together_o meum_fw-la and_o tuum_fw-la be_v the_o rise_n of_o all_o dissension_n it_o be_v this_o same_o thou_o and_o i_o that_o set_v man_n yea_o the_o best_a man_n sometime_o together_o by_o the_o ear_n this_o be_v my_o right_n and_o that_o be_v thou_o this_o be_v my_o place_n and_o that_o be_v thou_o this_o be_v my_o opinion_n and_o that_o be_v thou_o if_o the_o interest_n be_v one_o they_o will_v be_v one_o but_o sure_o it_o can_v be_v avoid_v but_o it_o will_v be_v so_o different_a in_o this_o world_n there_o will_v be_v difference_n now_o and_o then_o even_o among_o the_o saint_n themselves_o it_o be_v upon_o the_o point_n of_o interest_n that_o abraham_n and_o lot_n fall_v out_o though_o they_o be_v both_o good_a man_n and_o it_o be_v note_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n himself_o as_o one_o especial_a reason_n of_o the_o strange_a consent_n and_o harmony_n that_o be_v among_o the_o primitive_a saint_n because_o their_o interest_n be_v one_o act_v 4.32_o the_o multitude_n of_o they_o that_o believe_v be_v of_o one_o heart_n and_o of_o one_o soul_n how_o so_o they_o have_v all_o thing_n common_a neither_o say_v any_o of_o they_o that_o any_o of_o the_o thing_n which_o he_o possess_v be_v his_o own_o the_o state_n of_o those_o time_n my_o brethren_n hard_a to_o keep_v perfect_a unity_n among_o the_o saint_n when_o once_o they_o shall_v come_v all_o to_o be_v in_o one_o place_n in_o one_o condition_n of_o one_o opinion_n and_o to_o have_v one_o inheritance_n and_o so_o to_o have_v one_o common_a interest_n among_o they_o all_o when_o god_n shall_v be_v all_o in_o all_o there_o will_v be_v no_o more_o division_n but_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n
