grieve_v here_o the_o soul_n pinch_v a_o hypocrite_n be_v weary_a of_o the_o duty_n a_o child_n of_o god_n rejoice_v in_o it_o but_o he_o be_v weary_a of_o his_o sin_n and_o unsavouriness_n and_o weariness_n in_o the_o duty_n i_o persuade_v myself_o sir_n that_o you_o may_v soon_o mistake_v your_o spirit_n herein_o you_o think_v you_o be_v unwilling_a to_o come_v to_o the_o duty_n and_o be_v weary_a of_o it_o when_o indeed_o it_o be_v your_o glory_n joy_n and_o love_n but_o it_o be_v because_o you_o fear_v you_o can_v do_v it_o no_o better_o that_o trouble_v you_o that_o you_o have_v such_o a_o vile_a heart_n in_o it_o and_o if_o your_o trouble_n be_v from_o hence_o the_o good_a lord_n increase_v it_o in_o you_o daily_o and_o withal_o bless_v the_o lord_n and_o say_v lord_n though_o i_o be_o weary_a of_o my_o vile_a heart_n in_o these_o day_n of_o humiliation_n in_o these_o sabbath_n yet_o i_o hless_a thou_o the_o day_n and_o duty_n themselves_o thou_o know_v be_v dear_a yourself_o as_o in_o heb._n 8._o because_o they_o be_v make_v indefinite_o without_o condition_n conditional_a promise_n you_o say_v you_o can_v if_o you_o can_v find_v the_o qualification_n that_o give_v you_o right_a to_o the_o good_a of_o the_o promise_n within_o you_o answ_n this_o useful_a fruitful_a question_n how_o to_o apply_v absolute_a promise_n to_o one_o particular_a deserve_v a_o a_o act_v frame_n for_o he_o and_o if_o it_o can_v do_v iâ—s_o worldly_a employment_n as_o the_o work_n of_o christ_n and_o see_v how_o great_o it_o honour_v christ_n in_o attend_v on_o he_o oh_o what_o peace_n shall_v a_o christian_a enjoy_v notwithstanding_o all_o his_o dislraction_n every_o day_n and_o how_o easy_o will_v such_o devout_a thought_n you_o speak_v of_o be_v repel_v like_o darkness_n before_o the_o light_n for_o the_o nobleness_n of_o those_o good_a thought_n you_o speak_v of_o present_v themselves_o against_o the_o mean_a and_o base_a outside_n of_o civil_a affair_n make_v you_o ready_a to_o honour_v the_o one_o when_o you_o be_v call_v to_o serve_v the_o other_o but_o now_o by_o see_v you_o do_v the_o work_n of_o christ_n jesus_n in_o they_o you_o shall_v hereby_o see_v a_o glory_n in_o the_o mean_a service_n you_o perform_v in_o civil_a affair_n and_o this_o will_v make_v you_o cleave_v unto_o they_o but_o i_o have_v say_v too_o much_o about_o repel_v of_o good_a thought_n in_o these_o time_n wherein_o man_n have_v to_o few_o though_o it_o may_v be_v little_a enough_o to_o satisfy_v you_o quest_n 2._o your_o second_o trouble_n be_v this_o viz._n that_o your_o heart_n be_v keep_v from_o be_v humble_v for_o sinful_a distraction_n that_o hinder_v and_o interrupt_v the_o spiritual_a performance_n of_o holy_a duty_n and_o that_o for_o two_o reason_n first_o because_o they_o be_v involuntary_a and_o accidental_a second_o because_o they_o can_v break_v the_o covenant_n between_o god_n and_o your_o soul_n be_v but_o infirmity_n answ_n for_o the_o latter_a clause_n concern_v breach_n of_o covenant_n together_o with_o the_o other_o 1._o i_o say_v not_o only_o infirmity_n do_v not_o but_o the_o great_a sin_n can_v make_v a_o breach_n of_o covenant_n between_o god_n and_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v once_o real_o not_o
his_o first_o root_n and_o so_o to_o sorrow_n and_o loath_a and_o condemn_v himself_o so_o that_o to_o wind_n up_o all_o that_o i_o have_v say_v look_v upon_o yourself_o as_o in_o christ_n you_o may_v say_v these_o involuntary_a infirmity_n do_v not_o shall_v not_o condemn_v i_o but_o lord_n it_o be_v grace_n grace_n that_o it_o be_v not_o so_o and_o this_o be_v evangelical_n humiliation_n look_v again_o upon_o yourself_o as_o you_o stand_v on_o your_o own_o bottom_n and_o live_v in_o your_o own_o nature_n and_o so_o you_o may_v say_v after_o the_o least_o infirmity_n i_o have_v now_o break_v a_o most_o holy_a and_o righteous_a law_n and_o rherefore_o i_o be_o already_o condemn_v o_o woe_n be_v i_o i_o have_v already_o undo_v myself_o by_o my_o iniquity_n and_o this_o be_v legal_a humiliation_n which_o serve_v for_o mortification_n as_o the_o first_o for_o vification_n i_o know_v it_o be_v very_o difficult_a to_o bring_v the_o heart_n to_o acknowledge_v free_o it_o deserve_v death_n after_o so_o small_a a_o involuntary_a offence_n but_o when_o the_o lord_n reveal_v two_o thing_n first_o himself_o in_o his_o glory_n second_o how_o the_o least_o sin_n strike_v he_o i_o persuade_v myself_o the_o vile_a heart_n can_v but_o be_v force_v to_o confess_v how_o just_a god_n shall_v be_v in_o his_o severe_a proceed_n against_o he_o and_o withal_o consider_v the_o more_o involuntary_a any_o sin_n be_v the_o more_o strong_a and_o natural_a it_o be_v and_o the_o more_o natural_a the_o more_o horrible_a as_o to_o be_v a_o natural_a thief_n be_v far_o worse_a than_o to_o be_v a_o deliberate_a thief_n who_o sometime_o steal_v and_o therefore_o good_a sir_n take_v heed_n of_o look_v no_o deep_o nor_o see_v no_o further_o than_o the_o bare_a act_n and_o unvoluntariness_n and_o accidentalness_n and_o suddenness_n of_o your_o infirmity_n for_o if_o you_o do_v you_o look_v through_o the_o wrong_a end_n of_o the_o glass_n and_o they_o will_v appear_v so_o small_a that_o you_o will_v find_v it_o a_o very_a tough_a work_n to_o bring_v your_o heart_n consentive_o to_o say_v if_o i_o may_v say_v and_o use_v your_o own_o phrase_n it_o be_v thy_o mercy_n lord_n that_o i_o be_o not_o consume_v for_o they_o but_o look_v upon_o they_o as_o indeed_o they_o be_v in_o respect_n of_o that_o infinite_a glory_n you_o strike_v do_v the_o great_a mischief_n to_o god_n by_o they_o and_o which_o make_v they_o the_o vile_a as_o they_o be_v so_o strong_a you_o can_v remove_v they_o and_o so_o horrible_a as_o that_o it_o be_v natural_a to_o you_o to_o commit_v they_o etc._n etc._n and_o sure_o you_o will_v not_o through_o grace_n find_v such_o thought_n haunt_v you_o long_o not_o but_o that_o they_o will_v be_v haply_o rise_a and_o tempt_v but_o never_o always_o vex_v and_o prevail_v ans_fw-fr satan_n ground_n reach_v as_o far_o as_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n people_n and_o therefore_o so_o far_o he_o may_v come_v and_o there_o he_o may_v walk_v for_o he_o come_v into_o the_o mind_n of_o innocent_a adam_n nay_o jesus_n christ_n by_o his_o suggest_v temptation_n but_o the_o heart_n be_v christ_n peculiar_a possession_n and_o purchase_n and_o if_o he_o shall_v still_o there_o offer_v to_o come_v in_o and_o vex_v you_o and_o prevail_v against_o you_o and_o to_o lodge_v his_o suggestion_n this_o or_o any_o other_o way_n with_o you_o you_o have_v law_n and_o christ_n on_o your_o side_n by_o this_o little_a light_n now_o give_v you_o to_o cast_v he_o out_o quest_n 3._o the_o three_o thing_n that_o trouble_v you_o be_v the_o disranking_a of_o the_o person_n in_o the_o trinity_n for_o though_o you_o think_v the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v god_n yet_o you_o have_v not_o so_o high_a a_o repute_n of_o he_o as_o of_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n because_o the_o son_n address_v himself_o to_o god_n the_o father_n in_o all_o his_o prayer_n and_o acknowledgmenr_n in_o a_o more_o immediate_a manner_n than_o unto_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o therefore_o you_o will_v know_v if_o the_o word_n father_n as_o in_o the_o lord_n prayer_n include_v not_o the_o unity_n in_o trinity_n to_o this_o brief_o consider_v three_o thing_n 1._o without_o all_o question_n the_o same_o god_n which_o lie_v under_o that_o relative_a property_n of_o father_n be_v the_o same_o god_n with_o the_o godhead_n of_o the_o son_n and_o the_o godhead_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n there_o be_v not_o three_o god_n and_o therefore_o the_o godhead_n of_o the_o son_n and_o spirit_n be_v not_o exclude_v but_o include_v in_o the_o godhead_n of_o the_o father_n when_o we_o look_v upon_o the_o father_n as_o god_n in_o the_o lord_n prayer_n or_o any_o where_o else_o 2._o but_o second_o the_o father_n as_o father_n be_v never_o take_v for_o the_o same_o holy_a ghost_n in_o scripture_n nor_o the_o son_n as_o son_n be_v take_v for_o the_o father_n nor_o the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o holy_a ghost_n be_v at_o any_o time_n take_v for_o the_o son_n for_o it_o be_v a_o rule_n in_o theology_n though_o the_o res_fw-la substrata_fw-la the_o thing_n that_o lie_v under_o the_o relative_n property_n viz._n the_o godhead_n of_o every_o person_n be_v common_a and_o communicate_v yet_o the_o same_o godhead_n consider_v as_o clothe_v with_o his_o relative_n property_n as_o father_n son_n and_o spirit_n it_o be_v not_o common_a but_o peculiar_a for_o the_o godhead_n of_o the_o father_n as_o fathet_z be_v not_o the_o godhead_n of_o the_o son_n as_o son_n etc._n etc._n 3._o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o when_o christ_n address_v himself_o to_o the_o father_n as_o father_n in_o scripture_n it_o be_v not_o because_o he_o be_v either_o a_o diverse_a or_o great_a god_n than_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o it_o be_v for_o two_o other_o reason_n 1._o because_o the_o father_n as_o father_n receive_v primary_o the_o wrong_a that_o sin_n do_v against_o his_o work_n of_o creation_n for_o the_o father_n be_v the_o first_o person_n in_o order_n &_o creation_n the_o first_o transcient_a act_n as_o election_n and_o reprobation_n be_v the_o best_a immanent_n hence_o this_o work_n be_v attribute_v chief_o to_o god_n the_o father_n in_o respect_n of_o our_o orderly_a apprehension_n and_o hence_o man_n sin_v then_o when_o he_o be_v only_o make_v this_o be_v chief_o attribute_v to_o be_v against_o the_o father_n because_o his_o work_n appear_v to_o be_v chief_o there_o and_o not_o against_o the_o son_n for_o his_o work_n chief_o appear_v in_o redemption_n he_o be_v the_o second_o person_n and_o this_o the_o second_o main_n and_o wonderful_a work_n neither_o against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o his_o work_n chief_o appear_v to_o we_o in_o application_n be_v the_o three_o person_n and_o this_o the_o three_o main_a act_n that_o ever_o god_n will_v do_v or_o show_v forth_o to_o the_o world_n in_o this_o life_n hence_o god_n the_o father_n receive_v to_o our_o apprehension_n the_o wrong_n in_o creation_n by_o sin_n he_o be_v the_o person_n that_o be_v to_o be_v satisfy_v and_o not_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o hence_o jesus_n christ_n in_o all_o his_o prayer_n have_v a_o most_o special_a eye_n to_o he_o and_o not_o to_o the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o holy_a ghost_n because_o he_o come_v into_o the_o world_n by_o his_o death_n and_o intercession_n and_o strong_a cry_n to_o satisfy_v god_n the_o father_n and_o not_o god_n the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o a_o three_o person_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v say_v 1_o john_n 2._o 1_o 2._o if_o any_o sin_n we_o have_v a_o advocate_n with_o god_n the_o father_n not_o god_n the_o holy_a ghost_n because_o he_o be_v to_o our_o apprehension_n the_o person_n wrong_v and_o hence_o we_o be_v after_o sin_n commit_v chief_o to_o eye_n the_o father_n in_o our_o prayer_n and_o to_o go_v to_o he_o for_o pardon_n with_o our_o advocate_n with_o we_o because_o to_o who_o offence_n be_v chief_o offer_v from_o he_o chief_o pardon_n and_o reconciliation_n be_v to_o be_v expect_v 2._o therefore_o christ_n address_v himself_o chief_o in_o his_o prayer_n to_o god_n the_o father_n because_o he_o be_v the_o original_n and_o first_o cause_n of_o all_o good_a because_o he_o be_v the_o first_o person_n in_o order_n of_o subsist_v and_o therefore_o first_o too_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o convey_v i_o know_v the_o godhead_n be_v the_o original_n of_o all_o good_a but_o consider_v the_o person_n one_o with_o another_o and_o so_o the_o father_n be_v ever_o the_o first_o in_o operation_n as_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v the_o last_o in_o consummation_n for_o all_o good_a come_v from_o the_o father_n james_n work_v hope_n it_o also_o work_v a_o desire_n or_o come_v to_o christ_n by_o desire_n oh_o that_o thou_o lord_n will_v honour_v thy_o grace_n thy_o power_n thy_o love_n thy_o promise_n in_o help_v i_o second_o thing_n viz_o how_o and_o promise_n how_o to_o apply_v absolute_a promise_n when_o a_o christian_a may_v apply_v these_o promise_n i_o answer_v every_o christian_a be_v either_o 1._o within_o covenant_n with_o god_n and_o know_v it_o or_o 2._o within_o covenant_n with_o god_n and_o know_v it_o not_o or_o 3._o out_o of_o covenant_n indeed_o for_o his_o present_a estate_n and_o condition_n yet_o he_o be_v in_o fieri_fw-la or_o make_v towards_o it_o 1._o if_o he_o be_v in_o covenant_n and_o know_v it_o than_o you_o may_v easy_o perceive_v how_o and_o when_o he_o ought_v to_o apply_v god_n he_o may_v bold_o challengeatall_a time_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n nay_o if_o in_o some_o respect_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o justice_n itself_o the_o fulfil_a oâ—_n god_n the_o father_n will_v deliver_v in_o the_o several_a legacy_n of_o the_o promise_n buy_v by_o the_o blood_n &_o seal_v by_o the_o same_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n that_o they_o may_v and_o shall_v be_v make_v good_a unto_o he_o that_o be_v clear_a 2._o second_o if_o he_o be_v in_o covenant_n and_o know_v it_o not_o and_o question_n hence_o whether_o god_n be_v he_o or_o not_o and_o consequent_o whether_o the_o promise_n belong_v unto_o he_o then_o the_o rule_n be_v to_o be_v observe_v let_v he_o so_o sue_v and_o seek_v for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o absolute_a promise_n until_o by_o reflect_v upon_o his_o own_o act_n herein_o he_o perceive_v himself_o adorn_v and_o dignify_v with_o the_o qualification_n of_o some_o conditional_a promise_n and_o then_o if_o he_o can_v find_v the_o condition_n or_o qualification_n within_o himself_o then_o as_o you_o judge_v and_o write_v he_o may_v conclude_v that_o the_o conditional_a promise_n belong_v to_o he_o &_o if_o one_o promise_n than_o all_o god_n promise_n and_o therefore_o that_o absolute_a promise_n be_v his_o own_o because_o at_o least_o one_o condional_a promise_n be_v for_o no_o unregenerate_a man_n be_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o any_o one_o conditional_a promise_n of_o grace_n unless_o you_o will_v say_v he_o be_v under_o the_o everlasting_a love_n of_o god_n the_o promise_n of_o grace_n be_v but_o the_o midway_n between_o the_o eternal_a purpose_n and_o decree_n of_o love_n and_o the_o glorious_a certain_a execution_n of_o that_o love_n in_o time_n the_o promise_n be_v the_o break_n day_n of_o god_n most_o glorious_a love_n which_o must_v shine_v out_o in_o time_n object_n but_o here_o you_o will_v say_v be_v the_o difficulty_n viz._n how_o i_o shall_v so_o seek_v for_o the_o good_a of_o absolute_a promise_n as_o therein_o to_o find_v may_v self_n within_o the_o compass_n of_o some_o conditional_a one_o i_o answer_v it_o be_v do_v chief_o by_o three_o act_n 1._o by_o be_v humble_o content_v that_o see_v the_o lord_n have_v absolute_o promise_v to_o work_v and_o do_v all_o for_o the_o soul_n he_o intend_v for_o to_o save_v even_o when_o it_o can_v do_v nothing_o for_o itself_o and_o that_o he_o have_v take_v the_o work_n into_o his_o own_o hand_n so_o that_o it_o be_v his_o promise_n offer_v office_n and_o honour_n to_o do_v all_o that_o therefore_o you_o lie_v down_o not_o sluggish_o but_o humble_o at_o the_o foot_n of_o god_n and_o content_v to_o have_v he_o to_o be_v your_o god_n and_o for_o ever_o to_o be_v dispose_v of_o in_o any_o thing_n by_o god_n if_o he_o will_v fulfil_v his_o covenant_n in_o you_o content_v to_o part_n with_o any_o sin_n if_o he_o will_v rend_v it_o from_o you_o content_v to_o know_v any_o truth_n if_o he_o will_v reveal_v it_o to_o you_o content_v to_o do_v any_o duty_n if_o he_o will_v enable_v you_o content_v to_o shine_v bright_a with_o all_o his_o glorious_a grace_n if_o he_o will_v create_v and_o maintain_v they_o in_o you_o content_v to_o bear_v any_o evil_n if_o he_o will_v lay_v his_o hand_n under_o your_o head_n and_o thereunto_o strengthen_v you_o and_o so_o see_v the_o lord_n promise_v to_o undertake_v the_o work_n for_o some_o put_v out_o the_o work_n and_o put_v over_o your_o soul_n to_o he_o that_o he_o will_v fulfil_v the_o good_a that_o his_o covenant_n promise_v in_o yourself_o now_o when_o you_o do_v thus_o which_o no_o question_n you_o and_o many_o a_o soul_n do_v many_o time_n reflect_v upon_o this_o act_n and_o see_v if_o you_o can_v or_o may_v not_o find_v yourself_o by_o it_o under_o the_o condition_n of_o some_o conditional_a promise_n and_o if_o you_o do_v then_o be_v you_o bind_v to_o believe_v all_o god_n promise_n be_v and_o will_v be_v yea_o and_o amen_o unto_o you_o now_o that_o you_o do_v so_o by_o this_o act_n itself_o speak_v plain_o for_o how_o many_o conditional_a promise_n be_v make_v to_o the_o meek_a bless_a be_v the_o meek_a mat._n 5._o and_o to_o the_o humble_a who_o god_n will_v raise_v up_o for_o this_o be_v not_o save_v meekness_n to_o be_v quiet_o content_v to_o be_v or_o to_o do_v or_o to_o bear_v any_o thing_n that_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v i_o from_o my_o own_o strength_n and_o feeling_n but_o to_o be_v to_o do_v or_o to_o bear_v any_o thing_n that_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v i_o if_o the_o lord_n enable_v i_o many_o a_o stout_a heart_n will_v glad_o have_v christ_n but_o if_o he_o can_v have_v he_o in_o his_o own_o term_n viz._n christ_n and_o his_o lust_n christ_n and_o the_o world_n too_o or_o by_o his_o own_o strength_n and_o power_n he_o will_v have_v none_o of_o he_o but_o desperate_o cast_v he_o away_o and_o say_v what_o shall_v i_o look_v after_o he_o any_o more_o i_o can_v pray_v i_o can_v believe_v i_o can_v break_v this_o vile_a and_o unruly_a will_n this_o stony_a adamant_n hearr_o thus_o the_o pride_n of_o a_o man_n heart_n work_v now_o he_o that_o be_v true_o meekn_v and_o humble_v he_o be_v content_v glad_o to_o have_v god_n his_o god_n and_o christ_n his_o redeemer_n and_o that_o upon_o jesus_n christ_n his_o own_o term_n first_o on_o his_o own_o covenant_n now_o what_o be_v that_o why_o it_o be_v this_o i_o will_v give_v you_o the_o good_a and_o work_v in_o you_o the_o condition_n to_o i_o will_v give_v you_o myself_o and_o therefore_o will_v not_o stick_v to_o give_v you_o a_o eye_n to_o see_v and_o a_o heart_n to_o receive_v too_o this_o be_v the_o covenant_n now_o hereupon_o a_o humble_a soul_n accept_v of_o christ_n according_a to_o his_o covenant_n on_o his_o own_o term_n thus_o viz._n upon_o that_o condition_n lord_n that_o thou_o will_v humble_v i_o teach_v i_o persuade_v i_o cause_v i_o to_o believe_v and_o in_o every_o thing_n to_o honour_v thou_o lord_n i_o be_o content_v glad_o and_o joyful_o to_o have_v thou_o do_v therefore_o what_o thou_o will_v with_o i_o just_o as_o

your_o spirit_n be_v move_v with_o joy_n or_o sorrow_n which_o it_o may_v be_v will_v not_o be_v stir_v at_o some_o other_o time_n as_o by_o drink_v a_o cup_n of_o wine_n the_o spirit_n be_v make_v more_o cheerful_a &_o lively_a etc._n etc._n answ_n i_o answer_v these_o three_o thing_n 1._o first_o that_o it_o be_v very_o usual_a for_o natural_a affection_n to_o be_v raise_v by_o a_o natural_a temper_n as_o by_o drink_v eat_a noveltiness_n of_o the_o gospel_n john_n candle_n fly_v be_v ravish_v with_o the_o gospel_n people_n be_v natural_o move_v sometime_o by_o a_o thunder_a minister_n yet_o never_o a_o whit_n the_o more_o grace_n etc._n etc._n and_o it_o be_v a_o good_a speech_n of_o doctor_n ames_n arminian_n universal_a grace_n as_o they_o describe_v it_o may_v be_v the_o effect_n of_o a_o good_a dinner_n sometime_o 2._o that_o though_o the_o be_v of_o grace_n depend_v not_o upon_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o body_n yet_o the_o exercise_n of_o grace_n and_o many_o gift_n say_v you_o can_v see_v a_o positive_a providence_n although_o you_o do_v see_v a_o negative_a providence_n in_o all_o your_o occasion_n and_o comfort_n and_o cross_n you_o meet_v withal_o as_o namely_o you_o can_v thank_v god_n for_o not_o take_v away_o your_o life_n etc._n etc._n but_o you_o can_v see_v god_n give_v it_o answ_n 1._o i_o answer_v 1._o consider_v what_o i_o write_v to_o you_o at_o first_o about_o this_o question_n in_o general_n 2._o ponder_v sad_o whether_o any_o creature_n or_o appurtenance_n to_o it_o have_v its_o be_v from_o itself_o or_o from_o the_o will_n
