then_o that_o neglect_n prayer_n that_o cast_v off_o prayer_n and_o restrain_v prayer_n or_o else_o do_v it_o by_o fit_n and_o start_v when_o they_o have_v nothing_o else_o to_o do_v they_o restrain_v family-prayer_n and_o closet-prayer_n what_o shall_v we_o think_v of_o they_o do_v these_o please_v god_n or_o do_v they_o not_o go_v on_o in_o a_o way_n of_o displease_v god_n from_o day_n to_o day_n provoke_v the_o lord_n to_o pour_v out_o his_o wrath_n upon_o they_o if_o there_o be_v any_o such_o here_o let_v they_o not_o go_v on_o any_o long_o thus_o to_o provoke_v the_o lord_n but_o brethren_n exercise_v faith_n in_o hear_v of_o the_o word_n and_o then_o to_o show_v you_o how_o to_o partake_v of_o the_o lords-supper_n in_o faith_n and_o then_o i_o may_v speak_v something_o by_o way_n of_o direction_n how_o we_o may_v exercise_v faith_n in_o the_o business_n and_o concernment_n of_o this_o life_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o our_o particular_a call_n for_o every_o thing_n must_v be_v do_v in_o faith_n for_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n but_o thus_o much_o shall_v suffice_v for_o this_o time_n sermon_n viii_o hebrew_n xi_o 6._o but_o without_o faith_n not_o please_v god_n in_o it_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o that_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n have_v faith_n in_o the_o habit_n the_o grace_n of_o faith_n in_o his_o heart_n while_o he_o be_v hear_v the_o word_n but_o it_o be_v requisite_a unto_o our_o please_a of_o god_n in_o hear_v his_o word_n that_o we_o act_n and_o exercise_v faith_n say_v the_o apostle_n in_o heb._n 4.2_o for_o unto_o we_o be_v the_o gospel_n preach_v as_o well_o as_o unto_o they_o but_o the_o word_n preach_v do_v not_o profit_v they_o why_o not_o why_o do_v not_o the_o word_n preach_v profit_v they_o he_o give_v this_o as_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o not_o be_v mix_v with_o faith_n say_v he_o in_o they_o that_o hear_v it_o they_o do_v not_o exercise_v faith_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n therefore_o they_o do_v not_o profit_n by_o hear_v for_o want_v of_o mix_v faith_n with_o it_o the_o word_n that_o be_v translate_v mix_v it_o signify_v a_o incorporation_n or_o a_o composition_n as_o it_o be_v as_o there_o be_v in_o put_v ingredient_n into_o a_o potion_n as_o now_o suppose_v in_o a_o potion_n if_o there_o want_v some_o special_a ingredient_n that_o be_v requisite_a to_o it_o the_o potion_n will_v do_v little_a good_a nay_o possible_o it_o may_v do_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o hurt_n it_o may_v not_o only_o not_o profit_n but_o it_o may_v prejudice_v it_o may_v be_v very_o hurtful_a true_o so_o this_o faith_n be_v a_o special_a ingredient_n to_o our_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n now_o if_o this_o be_v want_v this_o act_n and_o exercise_v of_o faith_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n we_o may_v be_v much_o prejudice_v it_o be_v of_o great_a concernment_n for_o people_n to_o be_v act_v and_o exercise_v of_o faith_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n i_o do_v not_o deny_v but_o god_n may_v sometime_o and_o do_v ordinary_o by_o the_o word_n work_v faith_n in_o those_o that_o be_v not_o believer_n before_o for_o faith_n come_v by_o hear_v and_o hear_v by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n rom._n 10.17_o yet_o notwithstanding_o we_o can_v say_v though_o god_n may_v please_v to_o work_v faith_n in_o those_o that_o have_v no_o faith_n by_o hear_v the_o word_n yet_o we_o can_v say_v that_o their_o hear_v the_o word_n that_o have_v no_o faith_n be_v please_v unto_o god_n or_o that_o they_o do_v please_v god_n in_o their_o hear_n no_o the_o text_n seem_v to_o speak_v the_o contrary_a the_o text_n say_v that_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n and_o true_o this_o may_v be_v the_o great_a wound_n the_o great_a sore_n upon_o people_n the_o great_a impediment_n and_o hindrance_n and_o reason_n why_o he_o be_v not_o send_v by_o the_o lord_n true_o than_o we_o can_v hear_v in_o faith_n and_o if_o we_o be_v not_o persuade_v that_o he_o be_v send_v by_o christ_n and_o call_v by_o christ_n to_o preach_v and_o dispense_v the_o gospel_n we_o can_v depend_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o ordinance_n of_o god_n we_o can_v expect_v the_o presence_n of_o christ_n we_o can_v expect_v the_o blessing_n of_o christ_n upon_o his_o preach_v there_o be_v two_o thing_n therefore_o that_o we_o be_v to_o attend_v to_o here_o 1._o that_o those_o that_o we_o hear_v preach_v the_o gospel_n be_v send_v and_o call_v thing_n from_o they_o as_o if_o god_n himself_o do_v speak_v it_o minister_n also_o you_o will_v say_v may_v differ_v sometime_o in_o their_o teach_n one_o man_n be_v of_o one_o opinion_n and_o another_o man_n of_o another_o opinion_n what_o be_v we_o to_o receive_v whatever_o one_o and_o another_o speak_v as_o the_o very_a word_n of_o god_n as_o if_o god_n speak_v to_o we_o how_o can_v this_o be_v answ_n for_o answer_v to_o this_o brief_o 1._o i_o say_v therefore_o it_o do_v concern_v minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o take_v very_o great_a heed_n that_o whatever_o they_o speak_v it_o be_v according_a to_o the_o mind_n and_o will_n of_o god_n to_o speak_v nothing_o of_o their_o own_o head_n but_o what_o they_o have_v warrant_n for_o from_o the_o word_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v be_v very_o careful_a of_o that_o so_o that_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o say_v as_o the_o apostle_n do_v 1_o cor._n 15.2_o 3._o for_o i_o deliver_v unto_o you_o first_o of_o all_o that_o which_o i_o also_o receive_v etc._n etc._n and_o so_o shall_v we_o do_v and_o let_v i_o tell_v you_o i_o confess_v it_o have_v be_v matter_n of_o some_o trouble_n to_o i_o fear_v lest_o i_o shall_v sometime_o speak_v what_o i_o have_v not_o warrant_v for_o from_o the_o lord_n mouth_n to_o hold_v forth_o according_a to_o his_o will_n it_o have_v make_v i_o sometime_o to_o tell_v you_o plain_o to_o wish_v that_o i_o be_v otherwise_o employ_v and_o that_o the_o lord_n may_v employ_v those_o that_o may_v more_o full_o declare_v and_o hold_v forth_o his_o mind_n and_o counsel_n to_o the_o people_n than_o possible_o i_o may_v be_v able_a to_o do_v but_o this_o be_v that_o that_o lie_v incumbent_n upon_o minister_n to_o be_v very_o careful_a to_o hold_v forth_o nothing_o but_o what_o they_o have_v warrant_n for_o from_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o 2._o suppose_v what_o be_v hold_v forth_o and_o deliver_v sometime_o by_o minister_n be_v not_o express_o back_v by_o the_o word_n yet_o notwithstanding_o we_o shall_v be_v very_o backward_o and_o slow_a to_o reject_v and_o despise_v what_o be_v hold_v forth_o though_o we_o do_v not_o see_v at_o present_a what_o warrant_v there_o be_v for_o it_o in_o the_o word_n possible_o it_o may_v be_v according_a to_o the_o mind_n of_o christ_n in_o a_o consequential_a way_n it_o may_v be_v reduce_v from_o the_o word_n and_o thus_o far_o further_a we_o shall_v do_v we_o shall_v be_v search_v and_o inquire_v whether_o those_o thing_n be_v so_o or_o no_o like_o the_o berean_o in_o act_n 17.11_o it_o be_v say_v that_o they_o be_v more_o particular_o to_o we_o so_o in_o this_o case_n so_o long_o as_o the_o word_n lie_v only_o in_o the_o scripture_n before_o we_o the_o word_n of_o command_n or_o the_o word_n of_o promise_n or_o perform_v duty_n every_o day_n and_o they_o attend_v upon_o the_o lord_n as_o they_o have_v opportunity_n to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o read_v the_o word_n daily_o they_o go_v on_o amain_o ay_o but_o still_o they_o steer_v a_o wrong_a course_n they_o sail_v by_o a_o false_a compass_n and_o certain_o they_o will_v never_o come_v to_o the_o haven_n of_o rest_n but_o will_v run_v upon_o their_o own_o ruin_n at_o last_o therefore_o observe_v it_o the_o devil_n will_v allow_v a_o professor_n to_o go_v on_o in_o a_o course_n of_o duty_n to_o pray_v every_o day_n in_o his_o family_n and_o closet_n he_o will_v allow_v he_o to_o go_v on_o in_o a_o course_n of_o ordinance_n attend_v upon_o god_n daily_o so_o long_o as_o his_o duty_n and_o service_n be_v not_o touch_v with_o the_o loadstone_n if_o they_o be_v not_o do_v in_o faith_n he_o know_v what_o will_v be_v the_o issue_n of_o they_o he_o let_v he_o alone_o because_o he_o know_v he_o do_v but_o deceive_v himself_o and_o delude_v his_o purge_v and_o cleanse_v the_o soul_n from_o sin_n that_o he_o will_v put_v away_o all_o guilt_n when_o he_o come_v to_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n see_v what_o be_v say_v in_o job_n 11.13_o 14_o 15._o if_o thou_o prepare_v thy_o heart_n and_o stretch_v out_o thy_o hand_n towards_o he_o if_o iniquity_n be_v in_o thy_o hand_n put_v it_o far_o away_o and_o let_v not_o wickedness_n dwell_v in_o thy_o holy_a duty_n the_o one_o be_v it_o empty_v the_o soul_n of_o the_o sense_n of_o its_o own_o sufficiency_n and_o ability_n to_o perform_v holy_a duty_n and_o also_o it_o empty_v the_o soul_n of_o the_o sense_n of_o its_o own_o worthiness_n to_o receive_v any_o mercy_n from_o the_o lord_n in_o any_o duty_n or_o ordinance_n these_o two_o thing_n faith_n do_v empty_a the_o soul_n of_o and_o so_o you_o shall_v find_v it_o that_o where_o faith_n have_v be_v act_v and_o
question_n not_o only_o the_o habit_n of_o faith_n that_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v a_o believer_n but_o also_o the_o very_a act_n and_o exercise_n of_o faith_n be_v requisite_a for_o our_o profitable_a partake_n of_o this_o ordinance_n the_o grace_n of_o faith_n be_v necessary_a for_o the_o give_v of_o we_o a_o right_a to_o partake_v of_o this_o ordinance_n for_o a_o man_n must_v have_v life_n or_o else_o meat_n will_v do_v he_o no_o good_a set_v the_o dainty_a meat_n before_o he_o that_o be_v dead_a he_o will_v be_v never_o a_o whit_n the_o better_a for_o it_o the_o meat_n can_v nourish_v he_o so_o if_o we_o have_v not_o a_o principle_n of_o spiritual_a life_n which_o be_v infuse_v into_o the_o heart_n by_o faith_n in_o christ_n if_o we_o have_v not_o spiritual_a life_n spiritual_a food_n will_v do_v we_o no_o good_a therefore_o there_o must_v be_v the_o grace_n of_o faith_n again_o this_o ordinance_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n it_o be_v a_o seal_a ordinance_n to_o seal_v and_o confirm_v and_o ratify_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o covenant_n now_o if_o so_o be_v we_o be_v not_o in_o the_o covenant_n than_o this_o ordinance_n can_v seal_v to_o we_o the_o blessing_n and_o benefit_n of_o the_o covenant_n no_o we_o do_v but_o set_v a_o seal_n to_o a_o blank_a and_o that_o signify_v nothing_o therefore_o i_o say_v it_o be_v necessary_a there_o shall_v be_v the_o grace_n of_o faith_n the_o habit_n of_o faith_n that_o those_o that_o do_v partake_v of_o this_o ordinance_n shall_v be_v believer_n but_o this_o be_v that_o which_o i_o be_o to_o speak_v to_o that_o though_o only_a such_o as_o be_v believer_n be_v to_o partake_v of_o this_o ordinance_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o we_o that_o we_o be_v believer_n but_o if_o we_o will_v partake_v of_o this_o ordinance_n so_o as_o to_o please_v god_n we_o must_v act_v and_o exercise_v faith_n also_o about_o it_o for_o i_o pray_v consider_v 1._o it_o be_v possible_a for_o those_o that_o be_v believer_n to_o partake_v unworthy_o to_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o say_v the_o apostle_n in_o 1_o cor._n 11.29_o he_o that_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o eat_v and_o drink_v damnation_n to_o himself_o who_o do_v he_o speak_v to_o there_o he_o write_v to_o believer_n believer_n than_o may_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o how_o come_v a_o soul_n then_o to_o eat_v and_o drink_v worthy_o to_o partake_v worthy_o of_o this_o ordinance_n true_o by_o the_o act_n and_o exercise_v of_o faith_n for_o though_o he_o have_v the_o habit_n of_o faith_n he_o may_v partake_v unworthy_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o divers_a believer_n come_v to_o partake_v of_o this_o ordinance_n some_o partake_v worthy_o and_o some_o unworthy_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o some_o partake_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n and_o they_o partake_v worthy_o and_o some_o partake_v without_o the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n and_o they_o partake_v unworthy_o and_o mark_v how_o the_o apostle_n go_v on_o say_v he_o it_o be_v requisite_a that_o those_o that_o partake_v at_o the_o lord_n table_n that_o they_o shall_v examine_v themselves_o let_v a_o man_n examine_v himself_o vers_fw-la 28._o and_o so_o let_v he_o eat_v examine_v himself_o concern_v what_o why_o among_o other_o thing_n about_o his_o faith_n what_o whether_o he_o be_v a_o believer_n or_o no_o yes_o that_o be_v one_o thing_n he_o must_v examine_v whether_o he_o do_v true_o believe_v or_o no_o whether_o he_o have_v the_o grace_n of_o faith_n or_o no_o but_o that_o be_v partake_n of_o this_o ordinance_n further_o say_v the_o apostle_n they_o that_o come_v to_o this_o ordinance_n must_v discern_v the_o lord_n body_n vers_fw-la 29._o he_o that_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o eat_v and_o drink_v damnation_n to_o himself_o not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n i_o may_v speak_v something_o by_o and_o by_o concern_v that_o to_o help_v you_o to_o understand_v that_o i'faith_o than_o must_v be_v act_v and_o exercise_v in_o this_o ordinance_n or_o else_o we_o do_v not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n and_o if_o we_o do_v not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n than_o we_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o and_o so_o do_v not_o please_v god_n therefore_o there_o be_v require_v the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o partake_n of_o this_o ordinance_n i_o may_v add_v further_o still_o that_o the_o blessing_n and_o benefit_n that_o be_v hold_v forth_o and_o convey_v by_o this_o ordinance_n be_v all_o spiritual_a blessing_n and_o therefore_o they_o must_v be_v partake_v of_o by_o the_o exercise_n of_o our_o spiritual_a sense_n it_o be_v not_o for_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n to_o come_v and_o take_v the_o bread_n and_o wine_n and_o savour_v it_o by_o the_o exercise_n of_o his_o bodily_a sense_n of_o taste_v no_o but_o there_o must_v be_v the_o spiritual_a sense_n exercise_v so_o as_o to_o partake_v of_o the_o spiritual_a blessing_n that_o be_v hold_v forth_o and_o convey_v by_o it_o well_o then_o it_o be_v grant_v now_o that_o it_o be_v requisite_a that_o there_o must_v be_v not_o only_o the_o grace_n of_o faith_n or_o the_o habit_n of_o faith_n but_o there_o must_v be_v the_o actual_a exercise_v of_o faith_n in_o the_o partake_n of_o this_o ordinance_n or_o else_o we_o can_v please_v god_n quest_n well_o then_o the_o great_a question_n be_v how_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n shall_v so_o exercise_v faith_n in_o the_o partake_n of_o the_o lord_n table_n that_o so_o he_o may_v please_v god_n in_o his_o partake_n of_o it_o answ_n there_o be_v every_o thing_n that_o be_v speak_v in_o the_o gospel_n be_v true_a no_o no_o this_o faith_n whereby_o we_o come_v to_o please_v god_n be_v another_o manner_n of_o faith_n but_o suppose_v now_o that_o shall_v we_o perform_v the_o duty_n of_o prayer_n so_o as_o it_o may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n or_o for_o hear_v the_o word_n how_o shall_v we_o so_o hear_v the_o word_n in_o faith_n that_o it_o may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n and_o how_o shall_v we_o partake_v of_o the_o lords-table_n in_o faith_n so_o as_o to_o please_v god_n i_o can_v come_v to_o answer_v this_o now_o but_o possible_o if_o the_o lord_n please_v i_o may_v speak_v something_o to_o that_o at_o some_o other_o time_n all_o that_o i_o have_v to_o say_v for_o the_o present_a be_v this_o you_o see_v friend_n brethren_n and_o belove_a what_o cause_n we_o have_v all_o of_o we_o i_o speak_v not_o only_o to_o unbeliever_n but_o to_o those_o that_o be_v believer_n as_o for_o unbeliever_n what_o cause_n have_v they_o to_o go_v home_o and_o bewail_v and_o bemoan_v their_o condition_n before_o the_o lord_n look_v back_o upon_o all_o that_o you_o have_v do_v throughout_o your_o whole_a life_n and_o you_o may_v write_v this_o upon_o it_o all_o you_o have_v displease_v god_n you_o have_v make_v many_o prayer_n and_o confess_v many_o sin_n and_o give_v thanks_o to_o god_n often_o you_o have_v read_v and_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o have_v do_v this_o and_o that_o and_o yet_o in_o all_o that_o you_o have_v do_v you_o have_v never_o please_v god_n because_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n we_o shall_v come_v to_o god_n with_o a_o sense_n upon_o our_o heart_n of_o our_o inability_n to_o perform_v the_o work_n and_o also_o with_o a_o sense_n of_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n that_o god_n shall_v hear_v our_o prayer_n when_o we_o have_v pray_v never_o so_o well_o as_o other_o may_v judge_v yet_o we_o must_v come_v with_o self-abasing_a and_o self-emptying_a so_o if_o we_o go_v to_o the_o people_n shall_v be_v sanctify_v and_o purify_v when_o they_o shall_v come_v to_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n and_o god_n shall_v draw_v near_o to_o they_o exod._n 19.10_o 11._o and_o so_o now_o when_o we_o be_v to_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o his_o word_n we_o be_v to_o be_v careful_a to_o remove_v all_o impediment_n that_o may_v hinder_v our_o profit_v by_o our_o hear_n which_o will_v certain_o hinder_v our_o profit_v by_o the_o word_n i_o shall_v name_v some_o few_o special_a one_o which_o the_o scripture_n hint_n to_o we_o as_o first_o this_o be_v one_o malice_n
