nature_n by_o the_o help_n of_o those_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d those_o common_a principle_n of_o reason_n that_o be_v in_o all_o man_n this_o be_v the_o conviction_n you_o read_v of_o rom._n 2.14_o 15._o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o gentile_n who_o have_v not_o the_o law_n yet_o have_v their_o conscience_n bear_v witness_n and_o accuse_v or_o excuse_v one_o another_o though_o they_o have_v not_o the_o light_n of_o scripture_n yet_o they_o have_v conviction_n from_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n now_o by_o the_o help_n of_o the_o gospel_n light_n these_o conviction_n may_v be_v much_o improve_v and_o yet_o the_o heart_n not_o renew_v what_o spiritual_a conviction_n what_o but_o then_o there_o be_v a_o spiritual_a conviction_n and_o this_o be_v that_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o sinner_n heart_n by_o the_o word_n whereby_o the_o guilt_n and_o filth_n of_o sin_n be_v full_o discover_v and_o the_o woe_n and_o misery_n of_o a_o natural_a state_n distinct_o set_v home_o upon_o the_o conscience_n to_o the_o dread_n and_o terror_n of_o the_o sinner_n whilst_o he_o abide_v in_o that_o state_n and_o condition_n and_o this_o be_v the_o conviction_n that_o be_v a_o sound_n and_o through_o work_n many_o have_v their_o conviction_n but_o not_o this_o spiritual_a conviction_n quere_z quere_z now_o you_o will_v say_v suppose_v i_o be_o at_o any_o time_n under_o conviction_n how_o shall_v i_o know_v whither_o my_o conviction_n be_v only_o from_o a_o natural_a conscience_n or_o whether_o they_o be_v from_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n i_o shall_v digress_v too_o much_o to_o draw_v out_o the_o solution_n of_o this_o question_n to_o its_o just_a length_n i_o shall_v therefore_o in_o five_o thing_n only_o lay_v down_o the_o most_o considerable_a difference_n between_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o 1._o natural_a conviction_n reach_v chief_o to_o open_v and_o scandalous_a sin_n sin_n against_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n for_o natural_a conviction_n can_v reach_v no_o far_o than_o natural_a light_n but_o spiritual_a conviction_n reach_v to_o secret_a inward_a and_o undiscerned_a sin_n such_o as_o hypocrisy_n formality_n lukewarmness_n deadness_n and_o hardness_n of_o heart_n etc._n etc._n observe_v then_o whether_o your_o trouble_n for_o sin_n look_v inward_a as_o well_o as_o outward_a and_o reach_v not_o only_o to_o open_a sin_n but_o to_o secret_a lust_n to_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a sin_n and_o if_o so_o this_o be_v a_o sure_a sign_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n because_o the_o trouble_n occasion_v by_o these_o sin_n bear_v a_o more_o immediate_a relation_n to_o the_o holiness_n of_o god_n who_o only_o be_v offend_v by_o they_o they_o be_v such_o as_o none_o else_o can_v see_v or_o know_v 2._o natural_a conviction_n deal_v only_o with_o a_o man_n conversation_n not_o with_o his_o state_n and_o condition_n with_o sin_n actual_a not_o original_a but_o spiritual_a conviction_n reach_v to_o
