abuse_v his_o grace_n seem_v to_o be_v a_o great_a sin_n than_o to_o distrust_v his_o power_n or_o to_o slight_v his_o authority_n or_o to_o trample_v upon_o his_o law_n you_o only_o have_v i_o know_v condemnation_n of_o it_o 2._o we_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n as_o a_o covenant_n of_o life_n and_o salvation_n we_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n as_o to_o the_o rigid_a exaction_n of_o towards_o the_o mend_n and_o better_n of_o it_o methinks_v your_o own_o thought_n shall_v suggest_v to_o you_o many_o thing_n that_o may_v make_v you_o groan_n and_o lament_v the_o sadness_n of_o your_o case_n while_o you_o be_v utter_a stranger_n to_o the_o save_a effect_n of_o grace_n 2._o if_o it_o be_v by_o grace_n that_o we_o be_v save_v then_o consider_v that_o your_o case_n though_o it_o be_v sad_a yet_o it_o be_v not_o hopeless_a and_o remediless_a though_o it_o be_v dangerous_a it_o be_v not_o yet_o altogether_o desperate_a think_v thus_o with_o yourselves_o if_o all_o that_o a_o humble_v and_o affect_v consideration_n to_o see_v many_o and_o many_o save_v while_o you_o be_v yet_o in_o your_o sin_n so_o there_o be_v real_o in_o this_o very_a thing_n some_o ground_n of_o effect_n to_o man_n and_o these_o be_v the_o word_n and_o ordinance_n and_o duty_n of_o holiness_n and_o worship_n hence_o the_o gospel_n be_v call_v the_o gospel_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o ordinance_n of_o worship_n be_v call_v the_o mean_n of_o grace_n not_o only_o because_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v therein_o reveal_v and_o make_v know_v but_o also_o because_o it_o be_v thereby_o in_o the_o serious_a diligent_a and_o reverend_a use_n of_o they_o communicate_v and_o bestow_v upon_o carnal_a blind_a and_o dead_a sinner_n for_o the_o enlighten_v sanctify_a and_o save_v they_o therefore_o here_o you_o must_v lie_v and_o wait_v for_o it_o as_o the_o impotent_a man_n do_v at_o the_o pool_n of_o bethesda_n wait_v for_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o water_n there_o be_v a_o heal_a virtue_n communicate_v but_o it_o be_v by_o those_o water_n and_o no_o other_o so_o grace_n do_v communicate_v its_o heal_n sanctify_a and_o save_a virtue_n but_o it_o be_v by_o its_o own_o choose_a and_o appoint_v mean_n and_o no_o other_o as_o it_o be_v the_o influence_n and_o blessing_n of_o heaven_n that_o give_v we_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o earth_n but_o this_o only_a by_o blessing_n man_n labour_n and_o industry_n in_o plough_v and_o sow_v and_o never_o without_o it_o so_o it_o be_v here_o carnal_a heart_n be_v apt_a to_o draw_v a_o quite_o contrary_a conclusion_n from_o hence_o and_o to_o say_v if_o it_o be_v grace_n that_o save_v we_o than_o we_o have_v the_o less_o if_o any_o thing_n to_o do_v ourselves_o but_o you_o see_v the_o contrary_n inference_n to_o this_o of_o they_o be_v clear_a viz._n that_o we_o shall_v not_o do_v the_o less_o ourselves_o but_o rather_o the_o more_o because_o grace_n save_v we_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v work_v out_o your_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_v for_o it_o be_v god_n that_o work_v in_o you_o both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v a_o strange_a inference_n some_o will_v think_v and_o yet_o it_o be_v very_o clear_a as_o you_o may_v see_v in_o other_o thing_n the_o husbandman_n when_o the_o season_n fit_v he_o do_v bestir_v himself_o the_o more_o in_o plough_v and_o sow_v and_o gather_v in_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o earth_n because_o he_o know_v he_o have_v not_o the_o season_n in_o his_o own_o power_n and_o all_o his_o labour_n and_o industry_n without_o that_o will_v signify_v nothing_o at_o all_o so_o here_o if_o it_o be_v grace_n that_o must_v save_v we_o if_o ever_o we_o be_v save_v then_o you_o have_v great_a reason_n to_o bestir_v yourselves_o in_o use_v the_o mean_n wherein_o grace_n communicate_v itself_o 6._o if_o grace_n save_v we_o then_o as_o you_o must_v use_v the_o mean_n that_o be_v of_o its_o appoint_v so_o you_o must_v use_v then_o dependent_o with_o a_o eye_n to_o grace_n for_o its_o blessing_n upon_o they_o to_o make_v they_o successful_a grace_n be_v too_o little_o eye_v too_o little_o seek_v unto_o too_o little_o depend_v on_o in_o the_o use_n of_o mean_n and_o therefore_o the_o success_n be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n according_o person_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n eye_n man_n that_o be_v instrument_n but_o eye_v not_o god_n and_o his_o grace_n which_o rich_a man_n to_o be_v save_v they_o be_v amaze_v at_o it_o and_o say_v who_o then_o can_v be_v save_v why_o say_v our_o saviour_n those_o thing_n that_o be_v impossible_a with_o man_n be_v easy_a how_o powerful_a corruption_n be_v and_o how_o weak_a and_o unable_a they_o be_v to_o conquer_v it_o than_o they_o be_v ready_a to_o say_v alas_o who_o can_v be_v save_v why_o here_o be_v great_a encouragement_n for_o you_o that_o though_o conversion-work_n be_v above_o your_o own_o power_n and_o the_o power_n of_o any_o mere_a creature_n yet_o grace_n can_v enlighten_v your_o darkness_n quicken_v your_o deadness_n and_o overcome_v your_o resistance_n as_o for_o instance_n when_o the_o soul_n consider_v its_o own_o earthly_a carnal_a temper_n and_o disposition_n how_o disincline_v and_o averse_a it_o be_v to_o god_n and_o holiness_n and_o all_o spiritual_a and_o divine_a thing_n it_o be_v ready_a to_o say_v how_o shall_v this_o heart_n of_o i_o ever_o be_v make_v to_o love_n god_n above_o all_o and_o to_o delight_v in_o he_o and_o his_o service_n why_o here_o be_v encouragement_n god_n that_o make_v the_o heart_n can_v master_n it_o can_v renew_v and_o change_v it_o he_o satan_n thus_o since_o it_o be_v by_o grace_n that_o we_o be_v save_v then_o notwithstanding_o all_o difficulty_n here_o be_v great_a encouragement_n to_o use_v his_o appoint_a mean_n to_o pray_v and_o wait_v and_o strive_v in_o hope_n of_o success_n and_o a_o good_a issue_n for_o be_v the_o difficulty_n more_o and_o great_a than_o they_o be_v yet_o they_o be_v not_o insuperable_a to_o a_o almighty_a grace_n 4._o if_o it_o be_v by_o grace_n that_o we_o be_v save_v than_o what_o use_n shall_v those_o make_v of_o this_o doctrine_n that_o have_v already_o taste_v and_o experience_v the_o of_o ourselves_o be_v a_o thing_n most_o hateful_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o god_n most_o contrary_a to_o his_o nature_n and_o his_o law_n god_n resist_v the_o proud_a and_o he_o be_v say_v to_o know_v the_o proud_a afar_o off_o but_o humility_n be_v a_o thing_n of_o great_a price_n and_o value_n in_o his_o eye_n 1_o pet._n 3._o 4._o yea_o the_o humble_a spirit_n be_v a_o habitation_n that_o he_o make_v choice_n of_o as_o a_o seat_n of_o his_o special_a residence_n isa._n 57_o 15._o and_o therefore_o god_n have_v contrive_v the_o whole_a business_n of_o our_o recovery_n and_o salvation_n by_o christ_n in_o such_o a_o way_n and_o method_n as_o shall_v most_o effectual_o hide_v pride_n from_o man_n salvation_n be_v of_o grace_n from_o first_o to_o last_o that_o the_o loftiness_n of_o man_n
