god_n to_o beg_v for_o reconciliation_n for_o grace_n for_o mercy_n for_o strength_n etc._n etc._n though_o there_o be_v many_o sin_n which_o i_o have_v not_o actual_o think_v on_o yet_o this_o may_v be_v a_o right_n and_o penitential_a consideration_n repentance_n iii_o case_n whether_o a_o single_a consideration_n of_o sin_n be_v sufficient_a to_o repentance_n another_o case_n may_v be_v this_o whether_o the_o consideration_n of_o sin_n tend_v to_o repentance_n must_v be_v frequent_a or_o whether_o a_o single_a consideration_n may_v be_v sufficient_a for_o the_o resolution_n of_o this_o case_n thus_o 1._o divine_n distinguish_v of_o repentance_n that_o gradual_a distinction_n premise_v repentance_n be_v either_o initial_a or_o gradual_a it_o be_v either_o initial_a or_o gradual_a the_o initial_a repentance_n be_v the_o first_o turn_v from_o sin_n nay_o the_o very_a first_o will_v and_o desire_v so_o to_o do_v with_o a_o purpose_n and_o endeavour_v to_o effect_v it_o the_o gradual_a repentance_n be_v the_o ripen_n and_o perfect_v of_o repentance_n in_o the_o degree_n of_o all_o the_o part_n of_o it_o 2._o again_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a consideration_n of_o sin_n one_o be_v solemn_a wherein_o the_o solemn_a there_o be_v a_o twofold_a consideration_n of_o sin_n solemn_a soul_n sequester_v itself_o earnest_o search_v into_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o into_o its_o own_o spirit_n and_o into_o the_o way_n of_o life_n peruse_v and_o review_v the_o sinful_a condition_n all_o over_o in_o the_o part_n and_o kind_n in_o the_o heinous_a circumstance_n and_o agravation_n and_o hereupon_o solemn_o indite_v itself_o before_o the_o lord_n by_o confess_v judge_a etc._n etc._n another_o be_v ordinary_a which_o be_v a_o daily_o look_v ordinary_a ordinary_a over_o the_o book_n and_o peruse_v of_o the_o sinful_a account_n from_o time_n to_o time_n 3._o you_o must_v distinguish_v betwixt_o the_o it_o distinguish_v betwixt_o the_o grace_n of_o repentance_n and_o the_o act_n of_o it_o grace_n or_o quality_n of_o repentance_n and_o betwixt_o the_o act_n or_o exercise_n of_o repentance_n the_o grace_n be_v wrought_v only_o by_o god_n spirit_n the_o exercise_n or_o operation_n be_v wrought_v and_o occasion_v by_o consideration_n these_o thing_n be_v premise_v i_o conjecture_v thus_o much_o 1._o that_o solemn_a consideration_n be_v necessary_a to_o initial_a repentance_n repentance_n solemn_a consideration_n necessary_a to_o initial_a repentance_n the_o heart_n be_v not_o effectual_o excite_v to_o the_o actual_a leave_v of_o sin_n until_o it_o do_v first_o serious_o examine_v and_o try_v itself_o find_v out_o and_o ponder_v the_o vileness_n of_o its_o sin_v and_o transgression_n slight_a thought_n work_v no_o more_o then_o slight_a confession_n that_o we_o be_v all_o sinner_n and_o there_o be_v a_o end_n but_o the_o heart_n must_v look_v on_o sin_n in_o the_o kind_n circumstance_n hellish_a vileness_n of_o its_o thought_n if_o ever_o it_o will_v repent_v indeed_o 2._o that_o ordinary_a consideration_n be_v necessary_a to_o gradual_a repentance_n if_o ever_o you_o will_v perfect_v your_o repentance_n ordinary_a consideration_n necessary_a to_o gradual_a repentance_n repentance_n you_o must_v ever_o think_v of_o your_o sin_n those_o that_o be_v past_a those_o that_o be_v present_a by_o ordinary_a consideration_n i_o do_v not_o mean_v a_o slight_a and_o perfunctory_a view_n of_o they_o but_o a_o daily_a view_n though_o not_o in_o length_n of_o time_n yet_o have_v the_o same_o disposition_n of_o heart_n to_o condemn_v and_o abhor_v they_o and_o quicken_a we_o more_o fervent_o to_o seek_v god_n for_o strength_n and_o to_o decline_v the_o occasion_n of_o sin_n and_o to_o grow_v more_o watchful_a and_o tender_a etc._n etc._n if_o you_o do_v not_o ordinary_o consider_v of_o the_o vileness_n of_o sin_n you_o will_v be_v ordinary_o ensnare_v by_o the_o deceitfulness_n of_o sin_n if_o you_o will_v enjoy_v constant_a victory_n and_o deliverance_n you_o must_v admit_v of_o frequent_a consideration_n as_o for_o the_o solemn_a consideration_n that_o i_o conjecture_n be_v not_o necessary_a at_o all_o time_n but_o upon_o special_a occasion_n either_o 1._o before_o we_o necessary_a solemn_a consideration_n not_o necessary_a at_o all_o time_n the_o time_n when_o it_o be_v necessary_a enter_v into_o some_o weighty_a business_n 2._o when_o we_o lie_v under_o some_o weighty_a affliction_n 3._o when_o we_o be_v to_o die_v and_o make_v straight_o our_o weighty_a account_n 4._o when_o we_o be_v more_o solemn_o to_o meet_v the_o lord_n and_o renew_v our_o covenant_n with_o he_o as_o in_o the_o day_n of_o humiliation_n or_o when_o we_o be_v to_o come_v unto_o the_o sacrament_n now_o be_v we_o more_o solemn_o and_o serious_o to_o consider_v of_o our_o sin_n partly_o 1._o because_o now_o the_o lord_n it_o reason_n of_o it_o consider_v they_o who_o come_v into_o his_o special_a presence_n how_o you_o come_v 2._o because_o you_o be_v serious_o to_o renew_v your_o repentance_n which_o you_o can_v serious_o do_v without_o serious_a consideration_n 3._o because_o you_o be_v to_o renew_v your_o covenant_n with_o god_n to_o keep_v a_o more_o serious_a watch_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o now_o let_v we_o search_v our_o heart_n try_v and_o consider_v of_o our_o way_n renew_v our_o repentance_n turn_v with_o all_o our_o strength_n unto_o the_o lord_n put_v away_o iniquity_n far_o from_o we_o humble_v ourselves_o low_a before_o the_o lord_n confess_v our_o sin_n judge_v ourselves_o thus_o if_o we_o do_v we_o shall_v find_v more_o strength_n in_o our_o repentance_n more_o peace_n in_o our_o conscience_n more_o sweetness_n in_o the_o sacrament_n more_o confidence_n towards_o christ_n and_o may_v comfortable_o expect_v the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o salvation_n by_o his_o blood_n the_o three_o
be_v knowledge_n of_o christ_n as_o reveal_v in_o the_o word_n which_o a_o man_n may_v have_v and_o utter_v too_o and_o yet_o not_o have_v faith_n there_o be_v profession_n of_o faith_n for_o the_o truth_n against_o error_n and_o yet_o the_o grace_n of_o faith_n be_v another_o thing_n a_o man_n may_v have_v so_o much_o faith_n as_o to_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v a_o christ_n and_o to_o confess_v his_o excellency_n and_o in_o some_o sort_n to_o see_v his_o own_o necessity_n of_o christ_n yea_o he_o may_v begin_v to_o article_n and_o capitulate_v as_o the_o youngman_n and_o yet_o break_v off_o and_o be_v far_o enough_o from_o a_o faith_n which_o do_v indeed_o espouse_v and_o marry_v his_o soul_n unto_o christ_n 4._o last_o the_o misery_n and_o danger_n suppose_v danger_n the_o misery_n and_o danger_n you_o do_v deceive_v yourselves_o and_o in_o the_o event_n it_o appear_v that_o you_o be_v not_o espouse_v to_o jesus_n christ_n by_o faith_n that_o you_o never_o give_v your_o all_o other_o the_o like_a effect_n do_v faith_n produce_v if_o it_o espouse_v we_o to_o christ_n it_o set_v up_o christ_n above_o all_o account_n of_o he_o as_o most_o excellent_a judge_v of_o all_o other_o thing_n but_o as_o dross_n and_o dung_n in_o comparison_n of_o he_o will_v part_v with_o all_o for_o to_o get_v christ_n the_o beauty_n of_o christ_n be_v glorious_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o every_o believer_n christ_n do_v not_o seem_v a_o mean_a thing_n a_o ordinary_a or_o common_a thing_n but_o he_o be_v the_o pearl_n the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n my_o lord_n and_o my_o god_n say_v thomas_n in_o a_o word_n faith_n if_o right_o exalt_v the_o excellency_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o authority_n of_o christ_n the_o excellency_n of_o his_o person_n and_o the_o authority_n of_o his_o kindle_v in_o we_o a_o love_n unto_o christ_n not_o a_o divide_a love_n a_o love_n to_o christ_n and_o a_o love_n to_o sin_n a_o love_n to_o christ_n and_o a_o love_n to_o the_o world_n but_o a_o unite_a love_n none_o be_v by_o we_o esteem_v and_o love_v as_o our_o lord_n but_o christ_n nor_o do_v it_o satisfy_v itself_o with_o a_o remiss_a and_o diminutive_a love_n which_o may_v serve_v any_o inferior_a object_n but_o as_o christ_n be_v in_o himself_o the_o most_o excellent_a object_n so_o faith_n produce_v such_o a_o degree_n of_o love_n which_o bear_v some_o proportion_n with_o that_o object_n viz._n a_o superlative_a love_n a_o love_n of_o christ_n above_o all_o and_o more_o than_o all_o more_o set_v on_o christ_n than_o on_o any_o other_o object_n which_o yet_o may_v lawful_o be_v love_v more_o than_o our_o father_n or_o mother_n or_o wife_n or_o child_n do_v we_o find_v this_o love_n in_o our_o heart_n to_o christ_n against_o all_o and_o above_o all_o nay_o again_o true_a conjugal_a love_n infer_v with_o it_o a_o love_n 1._o of_o complacency_n to_o delight_v in_o the_o thing_n love_v 2._o of_o society_n to_o be_v with_o the_o person_n love_v be_v it_o so_o with_o we_o what_o delght_n have_v we_o in_o christ_n in_o his_o person_n in_o his_o excellency_n in_o his_o work_n in_o his_o ordinance_n be_v it_o our_o best_a joy_n to_o hear_v he_o to_o see_v he_o to_o
