time_n may_v be_v measure_v and_o be_v measure_v by_o our_o mind_n and_o use_v as_o a_o measure_n of_o the_o continuance_n of_o other_o thing_n it_o have_v a_o beginning_n and_o since_o the_o begin_n heaven_n pickle_n of_o sand_n on_o the_o sea_n shore_n drop_n of_o water_n in_o the_o ocean_n yet_o be_v we_o infinite_o short_a of_o the_o length_n of_o eternity_n which_o have_v no_o end_n at_o all_o so_o it_o be_v a_o endurance_n simple_o and_o altogether_o unmeasurable_a the_o second_o property_n of_o it_o be_v that_o it_o be_v such_o a_o endurance_n as_o have_v no_o flux_n in_o it_o once_o no_o
be_v not_o from_o the_o earth_n but_o from_o heaven_n and_o if_o he_o give_v life_n to_o they_o that_o be_v dead_a he_o may_v be_v just_o call_v the_o bread_n of_o life_n 3._o he_o add_v these_o word_n to_o comfort_v believer_n and_o to_o terrify_v unbeliever_n for_o no_o great_a comfort_n can_v be_v to_o they_o that_o receive_v he_o by_o a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n than_o the_o assure_a hope_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v raise_v up_o by_o he_o from_o death_n to_o a_o glorious_a and_o immortal_a life_n and_o on_o the_o other_o part_n it_o be_v matter_n of_o exceed_a terror_n to_o the_o unbelieving_a and_o wicked_a that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v partaker_n of_o this_o bless_a resurrection_n but_o they_o shall_v be_v raise_v up_o to_o shame_n and_o confusion_n this_o point_n be_v urge_v diverse_a time_n hereafter_o by_o our_o lord_n resurrection_n and_o therefore_o it_o may_v be_v we_o shall_v have_v occasion_n to_o speak_v of_o it_o more_o full_o only_o now_o peace_n according_a to_o the_o sense_n it_o be_v also_o to_o be_v find_v elsewhere_o especial_o in_o the_o 31._o 33._o of_o iâ—r_n where_o the_o lord_n speak_v of_o the_o church_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n say_v after_o those_o day_n it_o shall_v come_v to_o pass_v that_o i_o will_v put_v my_o law_n in_o their_o heart_n &_o write_v it_o in_o their_o inward_a part_n and_o they_o shall_v be_v my_o people_n and_o i_o will_v be_v their_o god_n and_o they_o shall_v not_o teach_v every_o man_n his_o brother_n and_o every_o man_n his_o neighbour_n but_o they_o shall_v know_v i_o from_o the_o some_o fantastic_a person_n in_o this_o last_o age_n have_v go_v exceed_v far_o this_o way_n and_o by_o this_o mad_a conceit_n have_v stir_v up_o horrible_a confusion_n and_o have_v draw_v many_o with_o themselves_o into_o perdition_n far_o be_v it_o from_o we_o to_o imagine_v any_o such_o thing_n god_n have_v ordain_v mean_n whereinto_o although_o he_o have_v not_o tie_v himself_o yet_o have_v he_o tie_v we_o to_o these_o mean_n to_o wit_n his_o word_n his_o sacrament_n prayer_n &_o meditation_n these_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o conduit_n of_o his_o grace_n &_o as_o it_o be_v the_o vein_n by_o which_o we_o must_v search_v after_o the_o heavenly_a wisdom_n if_o thou_o neglect_v the_o mean_n thou_o but_o tempt_v god_n &_o deceive_v thy_o own_o soul_n and_o though_o the_o mean_n satan_n be_v subtle_a who_o can_v transform_v himself_o into_o a_o angel_n of_o light_n and_o make_v we_o believe_v that_o his_o illusion_n and_o fancy_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n be_v the_o inspiration_n of_o god_n when_o we_o take_v not_o heed_n unto_o god_n word_n many_o be_v deceive_v in_o this_o kind_n some_o think_v their_o own_o conceit_n to_o be_v the_o very_a light_n of_o god_n when_o indeed_o there_o be_v in_o they_o nothing_o but_o darkness_n their_o carnal_a affection_n to_o be_v the_o motion_n of_o god_n spirit_n their_o wrath_n they_o think_v zeal_n their_o pride_n courage_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o deceat_fw-la be_v common_o incident_a to_o proud_a and_o presumptuous_a man_n yea_o sometime_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n be_v in_o some_o measure_n this_o way_n deceive_v and_o think_v the_o indictment_n of_o their_o own_o spirit_n to_o proceed_v from_o god_n himself_o so_o we_o see_v nathan_n be_v consult_v by_o david_n concern_v the_o build_n of_o the_o temple_n say_v unto_o he_o go_v and_o do_v all_o that_o be_v in_o â—hine_v heart_n for_o the_o lord_n be_v with_o thou_o &_o yet_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n the_o lord_n have_v not_o say_v so_o as_o gregory_n observe_v for_o he_o appear_v immediate_o thereafter_o and_o forbid_v the_o work_n albeit_o he_o approve_v the_o intention_n upon_o the_o other_o part_n man_n sometime_o be_v so_o deceive_v in_o this_o kind_n that_o they_o think_v that_o to_o be_v but_o a_o fancy_n of_o their_o own_o which_o be_v indeed_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o so_o also_o it_o please_v god_n sometime_o to_o exercise_v his_o own_o in_o time_n of_o temptation_n that_o they_o may_v be_v the_o more_o try_v and_o that_o they_o may_v grow_v in_o humility_n and_o other_o virtue_n these_o be_v like_a to_o the_o disciple_n s._n mark_n 6._o 49._o who_o in_o the_o tempest_n when_o they_o see_v our_o lord_n himself_o walk_v on_o the_o water_n they_o think_v it_o be_v but_o a_o ghost_n thus_o sometime_o we_o take_v evil_a for_o good_a and_o good_a for_o evil_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o separate_v the_o inward_a word_n from_o the_o outward_a we_o must_v not_o believe_v every_o spirit_n but_o we_o must_v try_v the_o spirit_n if_o they_o be_v of_o god_n we_o ought_v to_o try_v they_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o shall_v have_v our_o recourse_n diligent_o to_o they_o to_o who_o the_o dispensation_n of_o the_o word_n be_v commit_v who_o shall_v be_v more_o skilful_a in_o discern_v of_o the_o spirit_n according_a to_o god_n word_n which_o be_v commit_v unto_o they_o to_o conclude_v this_o point_n than_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o despise_v the_o outward_a mean_v but_o shall_v high_o esteem_v of_o they_o and_o shall_v great_o praise_v god_n for_o the_o occasion_n which_o we_o have_v of_o they_o we_o have_v particular_a reason_n of_o thankfullnes_n in_o this_o respect_n there_o be_v no_o nation_n under_o heaven_n with_o which_o god_n have_v deal_v more_o bountiful_o in_o this_o kind_n then_o with_o we_o who_o live_v in_o these_o three_o nation_n es._n no_o nation_n have_v the_o gospel_n in_o great_a plenty_n and_o purity_n no_o nation_n
for_o aught_o i_o know_v have_v have_v so_o great_a peace_n and_o prosperity_n join_v with_o the_o profession_n of_o it_o the_o second_o thing_n which_o i_o will_v have_v you_o to_o observe_v be_v wisdom_n that_o albeit_o the_o outward_a mean_n be_v much_o to_o be_v esteem_v yet_o we_o be_v to_o depend_v chief_o upon_o the_o instruction_n of_o god._n he_o be_v the_o chief_a master_n and_o in_o and_o knowledge_n god_n be_v essential_o and_o of_o himself_o wise_a he_o have_v not_o have_v nor_o can_v not_o have_v any_o teacher_n counsellor_n or_o book_n of_o which_o he_o may_v learn_v his_o communicate_v it_o put_v the_o case_n the_o knowledge_n of_o a_o man_n be_v never_o so_o great_a yet_o can_v he_o not_o make_v other_o learned_a except_o they_o have_v engine_n and_o take_v pain_n but_o our_o heavenly_a master_n be_v able_a to_o make_v the_o most_o rude_a to_o learn_v every_o truth_n that_o he_o please_v he_o be_v absolute_a lord_n of_o our_o spirit_n and_o can_v speak_v in_o which_o be_v by_o god_n reach_v to_o the_o affection_n also_o that_o be_v speculative_a this_o be_v practical_a &_o effectual_a that_o be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o shine_a light_n this_o both_o shine_v &_o burn_v that_o make_v learned_a but_o this_o markeâ—_n saint_n it_o be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o salvation_n or_o the_o save_a knowledge_n 〈◊〉_d 1._o 97._o and_o therefore_o shall_v be_v chief_o desire_v three_o observe_v that_o he_o 〈◊〉_d hear_v to_o the_o soul_n every_o one_o that_o hear_v and_o learn_v of_o the_o father_n sense_n as_o the_o body_n have_v five_o sense_n whereby_o it_o whereby_o he_o speak_v inward_o to_o our_o heart_n this_o be_v that_o hear_n without_o which_o the_o outward_a avail_v nothing_o it_o be_v the_o voice_n of_o god_n as_o we_o say_v that_o change_v the_o heart_n which_o soften_v the_o hard_a heart_n and_o make_v it_o to_o melt_v which_o inflame_v the_o cold_a heart_n &_o make_v it_o to_o burn_v as_o we_o read_v of_o the_o two_o disciple_n go_v to_o emaus_n which_o pacifi_v the_o trouble_a heart_n and_o secle_v it_o in_o tranquillity_n thus_o god_n speak_v sometime_o to_o sinner_n he_o make_v they_o to_o hear_v a_o voice_n as_o it_o be_v behind_o they_o say_v this_o be_v the_o good_a way_n walk_v in_o it_o and_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n unto_o your_o soul_n but_o most_o common_o this_o way_n he_o speak_v to_o the_o godly_a instruct_n comfort_v and_o exhort_v they_o to_o a_o continual_a progress_n in_o piety_n 2._o there_o be_v a_o spiritual_a sight_n while_o as_o god_n infuse_v a_o clear_a light_n in_o our_o mind_n raise_v up_o love_n desire_v and_o joy_n in_o our_o heart_n for_o this_o fight_n the_o holy_a apostle_n do_v pray_v ephes_n 1._o 17._o 18._o when_o he_o desire_v that_o god_n will_v give_v they_o the_o spirit_n of_o wisdom_n and_o revelation_n in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o that_o the_o eye_n of_o their_o mind_n be_v enlighten_v they_o may_v see_v what_o be_v the_o hope_n of_o his_o call_v and_o the_o riches_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o inheritance_n in_o the_o saint_n so_o there_o be_v a_o spiritual_a smell_n christ_n be_v anoint_a with_o the_o oil_n of_o gladness_n above_o his_o fellow_n his_o name_n be_v as_o ointment_n pour_v forth_o the_o good_a ointment_n of_o his_o divine_a perfection_n and_o heavenly_a virtue_n send_v forth_o so_o sweet_a a_o savour_n as_o make_v the_o spouse_n in_o the_o gant_n to_o say_v draw_v we_o and_o we_o will_v run_v after_o thou_o this_o the_o soul_n perceive_v by_o a_o spiritual_a kind_n of_o smell_n and_o the_o feel_n of_o it_o raise_v up_o most_o ardent_a desire_n and_o stir_v up_o to_o most_o earnest_a endeavour_n of_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v heavenly_a like_o wise_a the_o soul_n have_v a_o spiritual_a taste_n there_o be_v a_o unspeakable_a sweetnet_n in_o god_n in_o his_o divine_a mystery_n and_o obedience_n which_o may_v be_v taste_v by_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o spiritual_a man_n o_o taste_n and_o see_v how_o sweet_a the_o lord_n be_v say_v david_n as_o if_o he_o will_v say_v if_o you_o taste_v you_o will_v know_v the_o sweetness_n of_o his_o goodness_n mercy_n liberality_n and_o power_n so_o we_o may_v say_v of_o every_o divine_a mystery_n taste_v and_o see_v how_o sweet_a it_o be_v and_o of_o every_o virtue_n taste_v &_o see_v how_o sweet_a be_v obedience_n patience_n humility_n chastiry_n charity_n etc._n etc._n last_o there_o be_v also_o a_o spiritual_a touch_n hence_o the_o devote_n soul_n cant._n 2._o 6._o say_v his_o left_a hand_n be_v under_o my_o head_n and_o his_o right_a hand_n do_v embrace_v i_o and_o again_o i_o have_v find_v he_o who_o my_o soul_n love_v i_o hold_v he_o and_o will_v not_o let_v he_o go_v but_o why_o do_v i_o insist_v so_o much_o upon_o this_o we_o first_o to_o show_v the_o admirable_a goodness_n of_o god_n who_o vouchsafe_v so_o many_o way_n to_o communicate_v himself_o to_o we_o and_o make_v we_o so_o many_o way_n able_a to_o receive_v he_o all_o this_o proceed_v the_o wiseman_n ecclestast_n chap._n 30._o 23._o and_o which_o be_v worst_a of_o all_o this_o sorrow_n lead_v to_o eternal_a death_n for_o god_n be_v offend_v with_o it_o it_o stir_v up_o a_o man_n to_o do_v many_o thing_n whereat_o god_n be_v offend_v and_o make_v a_o man_n guilty_a of_o eternal_a death_n so_o this_o sorrow_n be_v no_o matter_n of_o joy_n but_o the_o sorrow_n that_o be_v in_o the_o corinthian_n and_o which_o ought_v to_o be_v in_o we_o all_o be_v of_o another_o kind_n it_o be_v a_o godly_a sorrow_n or_o a_o sorrow_n according_a to_o god_n for_o better_a understanding_n
