dwell_v and_o tabernacle_v therein_o and_o there_o through_o conveigh_v the_o manifestation_n of_o it_o unto_o the_o soul_n fourteen_o now_o a_o man_n regeneration_n be_v not_o simple_o the_o have_v incorporate_v in_o itself_o xv._n but_o before_o this_o divine_a image_n can_v be_v form_v in_o the_o soul_n or_o that_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v tincture_v or_o leaven_v therewith_o the_o soul_n must_v be_v cleanse_v and_o purify_v from_o the_o pollution_n and_o defilement_n it_o have_v receive_v from_o the_o contrary_a image_n which_o be_v that_o of_o the_o serpent_n even_o as_o according_a it_o and_o hungre_v and_o thirste_a after_n righteousness_n and_o so_o be_v a_o true_a inquirer_n after_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n to_o thou_o i_o hope_v this_o small_a treatise_n will_v be_v in_o their_o journey_n and_o travel_n as_o the_o title_n of_o it_o import_v which_o be_v a_o description_n of_o the_o way_n to_o the_o city_n of_o god_n for_o thither_o shall_v all_o our_o endeavour_n and_o labour_n tend_v for_o we_o have_v here_o no_o abide_v city_n and_o see_v without_o holiness_n none_o can_v see_v god_n and_o unless_o a_o man_n be_v bear_v again_o he_o can_v enter_v into_o doubtful_o and_o with_o unclearness_n and_o confusion_n of_o mind_n but_o exercise_v a_o perfect_a passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n as_o to_o all_o these_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o clear_v up_o unto_o thou_o to_o be_v the_o mind_n and_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n the_o right_a knowledge_n use_n and_o observation_n of_o this_o be_v of_o both_o great_a comfort_n and_o advantage_n unto_o the_o soul_n as_o we_o have_v often_o find_v by_o great_a and_o good_a experience_n 1._o it_o be_v of_o great_a comfort_n for_o it_o signify_v the_o great_a lenity_n and_o moderation_n of_o the_o lord_n towards_o we_o that_o if_o we_o be_v single_o give_v up_o in_o our_o mind_n have_v a_o willingness_n of_o heart_n in_o simplicity_n and_o uprightness_n to_o know_v the_o will_n of_o god_n perfect_o in_o all_o thing_n if_o some_o thing_n even_o of_o great_a importance_n be_v unclear_a unto_o we_o he_o spare_v to_o charge_v the_o guiltiness_n of_o disobedience_n upon_o we_o till_o we_o be_v clear_a though_o we_o be_v â—ound_v in_o the_o forbearance_n of_o they_o which_o be_v great_a gentleness_n upon_o the_o lord_n part_n 2._o again_o it_o be_v of_o great_a advantage_n to_o we_o for_o first_o it_o rid_v we_o of_o many_o superstitious_a fear_n which_o other_o have_v whilst_o one_o while_o they_o suppose_v they_o shall_v do_v this_o other_o while_o the_o contrary_a and_o still_o imagine_v god_n to_o be_v angry_a with_o they_o one_o way_n or_o other_o which_o beget_v most_o woeful_a superstitious_a fear_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o indeed_o i_o may_v say_v the_o ground_n of_o all_o superstition_n be_v the_o unclearness_n and_o confusion_n of_o mind_n as_o to_o the_o understanding_n the_o will_n of_o god_n one_o while_o over-rating_a thing_n and_o judge_v itself_o bind_v in_o thing_n wherein_o the_o lord_n have_v leave_v it_o free_a and_o then_o again_o imagine_v but_o both_o doubtful_o to_o please_v the_o lord_n in_o thing_n he_o do_v not_o regard_n second_o it_o reduce_v our_o whole_a work_n as_o it_o be_v within_o a_o narrow_a or_o small_a compass_n and_o yet_o not_o narrow_a than_o the_o lord_n allow_v for_o according_a to_o this_o advertisement_n concern_v the_o many_o thing_n that_o come_v before_o we_o as_o duty_n by_o way_n of_o consideration_n if_o we_o stand_v in_o a_o true_a and_o single_a resignation_n unto_o the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o all_o beginning_n of_o true_a conversion_n wrought_v in_o the_o soul_n the_o difficulty_n do_v in_o some_o measure_n still_o remain_v but_o not_o so_o great_a as_o formerly_z the_o great_a difficulty_n therefore_o belong_v unto_o those_o only_a who_o be_v but_o beginner_n and_o beginning_n to_o travel_v out_o of_o egypt_n and_o babylon_n and_o sodom_n into_o the_o holy_a land_n the_o land_n of_o the_o live_n and_o the_o holy_a hill_n of_o zion_n with_o their_o face_n thitherwards_o to_o who_o also_o it_o be_v a_o great_a difficulty_n how_o to_o distinguish_v not_o only_o betwixt_o the_o naturals_n understanding_n and_o the_o divine_a light_n of_o faith_n in_o they_o but_o to_o distinguish_v betwixt_o the_o true_a divine_a light_n and_o satan_n transform_v himself_o into_o the_o similitude_n of_o a_o angel_n of_o light_n in_o all_o which_o notwithstanding_o the_o difficulty_n be_v not_o so_o great_a as_o the_o enemy_n of_o the_o soul_n do_v represent_v it_o to_o be_v now_o to_o help_v any_o distress_a or_o perplex_a soul_n that_o may_v be_v in_o doubt_n concern_v this_o thing_n to_o such_o i_o say_v since_o thou_o be_v real_o convince_v that_o god_n have_v give_v a_o measure_n of_o the_o true_a divine_a light_n of_o his_o son_n christ_n jesus_n unto_o every_o man_n and_o woman_n and_o consequent_o unto_o thou_o for_o to_o such_o only_a at_o present_a do_v i_o write_v who_o be_v convince_v of_o this_o truth_n but_o do_v question_v the_o nature_n of_o their_o convincement_n why_o shall_v thou_o question_v that_o thy_o convincement_n do_v only_o proceed_v from_o the_o natural_a light_n and_o mere_a natural_a understanding_n of_o thy_o soul_n as_o influence_v by_o scripture_n argument_n and_o other_o outward_a help_n and_o not_o also_o from_o the_o divine_a principle_n of_o the_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n of_o christ_n jesus_n
all_o time_n to_o help_v the_o travel_a soul_n but_o yet_o there_o be_v some_o time_n more_o especial_o wherein_o the_o lord_n do_v give_v more_o abundant_a access_n and_o opportunity_n unto_o the_o soul_n which_o every_o one_o be_v to_o observe_v within_o himself_o and_o improve_v the_o same_o let_v none_o therefore_o strive_v or_o wrestle_v in_o their_o own_o will_n or_o natural_a strength_n another_o as_o they_o be_v move_v and_o to_o worship_n and_o call_v upon_o he_o in_o spirit_n and_o in_o truth_n for_o the_o life_n of_o the_o faithful_a and_o of_o such_o as_o be_v near_o unto_o the_o lord_n who_o be_v become_v strong_a man_n in_o christ_n have_v a_o exceed_a great_a influence_n upon_o the_o weak_a to_o help_v they_o and_o gather_v they_o to_o the_o true_a silence_n and_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v more_o abundant_o manifest_a where_o the_o faithful_a meet_v together_o in_o his_o name_n as_o â—e_n have_v promise_v whereunto_o many_o can_v set_v their_o seal_n and_o thus_o every_o one_o who_o be_v sincere_a and_o faithful_a to_o what_o they_o know_v and_o have_v receive_v will_v natural_o and_o as_o it_o be_v by_o a_o natural_a growth_n in_o the_o truth_n attain_v by_o degree_n more_o and_o more_o unto_o such_o a_o state_n until_o they_o perfect_o come_v to_o enjoy_v and_o possess_v it_o so_o as_o to_o see_v jerusalem_n a_o quiet_a habitation_n and_o to_o behold_v the_o king_n in_o his_o beauty_n and_o see_v his_o go_n in_o the_o sanctuary_n which_o will_v cause_v the_o soul_n to_o sing_v with_o david_n and_o to_o say_v as_o it_o be_v psal._n 84._o ver_n 1_o 10._o how_o amiable_a be_v thy_o tabernacle_n o_o lord_n of_o host_n for_o a_o day_n in_o thy_o court_n be_v better_a than_o a_o thousand_o but_o of_o this_o i_o warn_v thou_o that_o if_o thou_o have_v time_n enough_o to_o spare_v as_o thou_o think_v to_o rest_v from_o all_o outward_a affair_n that_o thou_o may_v the_o more_o abundant_o apply_v thyself_o to_o this_o silence_n and_o silent_a wait_a yet_o thou_o may_v exceed_v through_o a_o wrong_n and_o blind_a zeal_n and_o so_o may_v endanger_v and_o hurt_v thyself_o for_o such_o a_o silence_n as_o do_v not_o such_o unable_a to_o do_v any_o thing_n acceptable_a to_o god_n and_o unfit_a for_o fellowship_n and_o communion_n with_o he_o ii_o that_o god_n have_v not_o left_a man_n whole_o in_o this_o condition_n but_o have_v give_v unto_o all_o and_o every_o one_o of_o they_o a_o occasion_n in_o a_o day_n or_o time_n of_o visitation_n whereby_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o they_o to_o come_v out_o of_o their_o first_o state_n of_o unholiness_n and_o unrighteousness_n which_o be_v also_o a_o state_n of_o spiritual_a blindness_n and_o death_n into_o a_o state_n of_o holiness_n and_o some_o have_v none_o at_o all_o so_o as_o to_o fall_v under_o outward_a observation_n and_o yet_o the_o work_n of_o god_n in_o they_o may_v be_v as_o real_a and_o true_a as_o in_o other_o who_o have_v they_o most_o for_o it_o be_v much_o the_o same_o with_o bodily_a tremble_n as_o tear_n some_o will_v be_v make_v to_o shed_v tear_n in_o abundance_n other_o but_o little_a and_o other_o perhaps_o most_o inward_o of_o it_o call_v by_o some_o the_o fund_z of_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o ground_n or_o bottom_n of_o it_o and_o there_o will_v be_v some_o little_a room_n or_o place_n in_o thy_o heart_n mortify_v and_o purify_v through_o the_o operation_n of_o the_o power_n of_o god_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n which_o through_o its_o mortification_n and_o purification_n from_o sin_n become_v a_o fit_a and_o prepare_v matrix_fw-la or_o womb_n for_o the_o divine_a seed_n to_o conceive_v and_o bud_v therein_o a_o to_o receive_v some_o formation_n for_o as_o be_v say_v the_o seed_n can_v conceive_v but_o in_o a_o pure_a matrix_fw-la and_o womb_n indeed_o it_o may_v be_v as_o a_o fire_n and_o be_v so_o in_o that_o part_n of_o the_o heart_n which_o be_v unclean_a but_o it_o can_v never_o grow_v bud_n or_o conceive_v in_o it_o as_o a_o plant_n till_o it_o be_v cleanse_v therefore_o be_v it_o that_o it_o work_v as_o a_o fire_n in_o the_o heart_n as_o aforesaid_a to_o the_o end_n it_o may_v prepare_v some_o place_n for_o itself_o to_o take_v root_n in_o and_o therein_o to_o bud_v and_o conceive_v that_o it_o may_v spring_v up_o and_o blossom_n and_o bring_v forth_o its_o precious_a fruit_n x._o and_o as_o the_o heart_n and_o mind_n persist_v in_o its_o conversion_n aforesaid_a there_o will_v be_v by_o this_o time_n some_o tender_a bud_n of_o the_o divine_a and_o holy_a seed_n appear_v so_o far_o as_o way_n be_v make_v for_o they_o through_o the_o purification_n or_o mortification_n aforesaid_a and_o some_o real_a and_o true_a beginning_n not_o only_o of_o some_o but_o of_o all_o christian_a virtue_n will_v appear_v such_o as_o of_o love_n joy_n peace_n gentleness_n meekness_n patience_n temperance_n etc._n etc._n and_o other_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n for_o even_o as_o it_o be_v frequent_o in_o natural_a operation_n so_o in_o this_o spiritual_a it_o be_v also_o that_o after_o the_o destruction_n of_o one_o thing_n immediate_o follow_v the_o generation_n of_o another_o life_n hasten_v as_o swift_o after_o death_n as_o possible_o as_o can_v be_v conceive_v so_o that_o no_o distance_n or_o space_n of_o time_n be_v admit_v betwixt_o they_o thus_o i_o have_v brief_o point_v at_o divers_a good_a and_o precious_a effect_n which_o do_v follow_v upon_o the_o soul_n convert_v unto_o the_o divine_a presence_n and_o the_o light_n and_o power_n thereof_o in_o the_o holy_a seed_n and_o upon_o its_o continue_n or_o abide_v therein_o if_o there_o be_v any_o other_o not_o express_o mention_v they_o may_v be_v reduce_v unto_o they_o or_o implicit_o understand_v in_o they_o which_o be_v particular_o mention_v of_o all_o which_o the_o soul_n must_v expect_v at_o first_o yea_o and_o for_o some_o considerable_a time_n afterward_o but_o some_o certain_a beginning_n which_o will_v increase_v and_o become_v more_o and_o more_o observable_a according_a unto_o its_o continuance_n in_o the_o conversion_n aforesaid_a and_o much_o of_o all_o these_o effect_n except_v somewhat_o as_o to_o the_o latter_a do_v answer_v rather_o unto_o
into_o the_o hand_n of_o sinner_n to_o be_v so_o deal_v with_o as_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v in_o the_o fullness_n of_o time_n and_o according_a to_o this_o in_o a_o true_a sense_n it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o he_o bear_v the_o weight_n of_o his_o outward_a suffering_n in_o great_a measure_n from_o the_o very_a beginning_n as_o even_o among_o we_o man_n what_o we_o do_v certain_o foresee_v of_o suffering_n or_o trial_n to_o come_v upon_o we_o for_o the_o future_a do_v affect_v we_o with_o no_o less_o weight_n many_o time_n in_o the_o foresight_n of_o they_o then_o in_o their_o accomplishment_n yea_o sometime_o more_o as_o every_o one_o know_v by_o some_o experience_n and_o that_o he_o be_v give_v up_o and_o resign_v in_o the_o very_a beginning_n to_o come_v into_o the_o world_n outward_o and_o suffer_v those_o indignity_n and_o cruelty_n with_o many_o other_o deep_a trial_n be_v certain_o a_o sacrifice_n of_o a_o sweet_a smell_n before_o the_o lord_n and_o be_v very_o acceptable_a and_o satisfactory_a unto_o he_o vi_o and_o thus_o according_a to_o the_o plain_a and_o genuine_a sense_n above_o mention_v obvious_a to_o the_o weak_a capacity_n we_o may_v true_o outward_a by_o what_o they_o can_v outward_o hear_v or_o read_v of_o he_o while_o as_o they_o remain_v estrange_v from_o his_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n in_o the_o holy_a seed_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o yet_o they_o can_v never_o know_v the_o same_o but_o in_o this_o and_o oh_o at_o what_o great_a pain_n have_v many_o poor_a soul_n be_v to_o imitate_v christ_n in_o his_o heavenly_a virtue_n by_o set_v he_o as_o their_o example_n before_o he_o but_o mere_o as_o the_o letter_n or_o history_n declare_v of_o he_o by_o which_o way_n yet_o they_o can_v never_o attain_v unto_o the_o true_a imitation_n or_o follow_v of_o he_o for_o
whence_o it_o be_v what_o be_v its_o tendency_n and_o wherefore_o it_o be_v give_v they_o if_o then_o thou_o be_v but_o diligent_a in_o thy_o mind_n to_o observe_v and_o give_v attendance_n to_o the_o inward_a operation_n motion_n and_o shining_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n in_o thou_o and_o breathe_n of_o the_o divine_a life_n in_o the_o silence_n and_o quietness_n of_o thy_o soul_n out_o of_o the_o many_o wander_n vain_a thought_n and_o imagination_n of_o thy_o mind_n thou_o will_v certain_o come_v to_o a_o true_a measure_n of_o clear_a discern_a of_o the_o true_a divine_a principle_n life_n and_o light_n and_o of_o the_o operation_n thereof_o so_o as_o to_o distinguish_v it_o from_o all_o that_o which_o be_v but_o natural_a and_o carnal_a as_o also_o from_o all_o that_o be_v of_o satan_n in_o his_o cunning_a transforming_n and_o although_o in_o the_o beginning_n it_o will_v be_v very_o hard_a to_o thou_o to_o attain_v to_o that_o perfect_a and_o absolute_a inward_a silence_n of_o mind_n from_o all_o thy_o own_o thought_n and_o imagination_n which_o will_v afterward_o become_v easy_a and_o familiar_a unto_o thou_o as_o thou_o do_v experience_n any_o considerable_a growth_n in_o the_o truth_n yet_o as_o thou_o presse_v after_o it_o thou_o will_v find_v they_o self_n help_v by_o the_o lord_n to_o come_v into_o some_o measure_n of_o true_a silence_n and_o although_o thou_o can_v not_o say_v that_o all_o vain_a foolish_a thought_n and_o idle_a imagination_n be_v put_v out_o of_o thy_o mind_n yet_o if_o a_o considerable_a part_n of_o they_o be_v go_v and_o evanished_a so_o that_o thy_o mind_n be_v somewhat_o more_o cool_a and_o quiet_a and_o still_o and_o empty_a of_o such_o thing_n than_o it_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v here_o thou_o will_v find_v thyself_o at_o some_o advantage_n and_o in_o some_o capacity_n to_o discern_v the_o divine_a light_n and_o work_v thereof_o even_o as_o it_o be_v in_o this_o imperfect_a state_n of_o silence_n or_o half_a silence_n as_o we_o may_v call_v it_o to_o help_v thou_o then_o a_o little_a further_o in_o this_o inquiry_n and_o search_n that_o thou_o may_v come_v to_o know_v discern_v and_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o true_a divine_a light_n and_o work_v thereof_o in_o thou_o which_o be_v indeed_o a_o very_a necessary_a knowledge_n and_o without_o which_o thou_o be_v liable_a to_o sit_v down_o in_o a_o false_a rest_n and_o build_v upon_o a_o false_a foundation_n as_o many_o do_v at_o this_o day_n take_v the_o natural_a light_n and_o principle_n for_o the_o divine_a and_o supernatural_a and_o so_o what_o the_o socinian_o and_o pelagian_n be_v in_o profession_n who_o profess_v no_o high_a principle_n in_o they_o necessary_a than_o the_o natural_a these_o man_n be_v whatever_o they_o profess_v of_o the_o
