and_o love_a spirit_n now_o for_o the_o conquest_n of_o all_o these_o vice_n which_o engender_v strife_n you_o must_v observe_v the_o same_o method_n which_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v prescribe_v for_o the_o conquest_n of_o any_o other_o that_o be_v you_o must_v lay_v before_o you_o frequent_o and_o serious_o the_o guilt_n and_o mischief_n of_o these_o sin_n you_o must_v endeavour_v to_o persuade_v yourselves_o of_o the_o loveliness_n and_o advantage_n of_o the_o contrary_a virtue_n you_o must_v careful_o avoid_v all_o occasion_n of_o and_o temptation_n to_o these_o sin_n you_o must_v watch_v over_o the_o motion_n of_o your_o own_o heart_n you_o must_v resolve_v sincere_o upon_o reformation_n and_o amendment_n you_o must_v call_v yourselves_o to_o a_o account_n for_o these_o your_o resolution_n you_o must_v not_o faint_v nor_o be_v weary_a though_o you_o do_v not_o present_o conquer_v but_o you_o must_v repeat_v and_o reinforce_v all_o your_o vow_n and_o purpose_n and_o go_v on_o patient_o till_o you_o have_v bring_v forth_o righteousness_n unto_o victory_n and_o with_o all_o this_o you_o must_v join_v fervent_a prayer_n to_o almighty_a god_n for_o his_o assistance_n a_o truth_n and_o meekness_n and_o charity_n proceed_v out_o of_o my_o mouth_n that_o i_o may_v never_o minister_v any_o occasion_n of_o strife_n and_o contention_n but_o way_n ever_o preserve_v and_o raise_v and_o preserve_v the_o love_n of_o his_o master_n etc._n etc._n how_o to_o be_v abstain_v his_o thrift_n etc._n etc._n it_o be_v certain_a that_o every_o man_n duty_n be_v his_o interest_n and_o that_o in_o whatever_o station_n a_o man_n be_v there_o be_v nothing_o can_v render_v he_o more_o prosperous_a in_o it_o or_o more_o effectual_o recommend_v he_o to_o a_o better_a than_o a_o faithful_a and_o conscientious_a discharge_n of_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o place_n nor_o do_v solomon_n when_o he_o ascribe_v to_o wisdom_n these_o glorious_a effect_n or_o fruit_n length_n of_o day_n riches_n and_o honour_n understand_v by_o wisdom_n subtlety_n craft_n or_o worldly_a policy_n but_o pure_o a_o sincere_a performance_n of_o our_o duty_n towards_o god_n and_o man_n have_v therefore_o full_o discourse_v of_o a_o servant_n duty_n both_o towards_o god_n and_o his_o master_n it_o may_v suffice_v here_o to_o tell_v he_o in_o general_n that_o a_o sincere_a performance_n of_o this_o be_v his_o only_a true_a wisdom_n his_o only_a true_a policy_n however_o that_o this_o may_v more_o evident_o appear_v and_o that_o the_o servant_n may_v be_v more_o sensible_a of_o the_o obligation_n he_o lie_v under_o to_o the_o duty_n prescribe_v he_o i_o will_v descend_v to_o a_o particular_a consideration_n of_o his_o interest_n a_o thing_n which_o servant_n as_o well_o as_o other_o be_v allow_v nay_o oblige_v to_o pursue_v and_o advance_v by_o all_o fair_a mean_n it_o will_v easy_o be_v grant_v that_o the_o interest_n of_o a_o servant_n consist_v in_o these_o three_o thing_n his_o credit_n the_o love_n of_o his_o master_n etc._n etc._n the_o profit_n of_o his_o place_n it_o be_v therefore_o a_o duty_n which_o concern_v a_o servant_n to_o consider_v what_o course_n he_o must_v take_v to_o promote_v these_o three_o advance_v the_o servant_n credit_v how_o advance_v first_o then_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o ground_n of_o a_o servant_n credit_n or_o reputation_n it_o depend_v upon_o a_o opinion_n of_o his_o religion_n or_o virtue_n and_o of_o his_o ability_n or_o sufficiency_n for_o the_o place_n he_o undertake_v as_o to_o this_o latter_a it_o be_v not_o my_o business_n to_o direct_v you_o in_o it_o only_o i_o must_v put_v you_o in_o mind_n that_o there_o be_v some_o greneral_a qualification_n such_o as_o truth_n industry_n and_o humility_n which_o be_v necessary_a recommendation_n to_o all_o sort_n of_o lawful_a employment_n without_o which_o whatever_a skill_n or_o experience_n any_o man_n have_v he_o be_v unfit_a for_o any_o service_n the_o other_o basis_n or_o pillar_n of_o a_o servant_n credit_n be_v religion_n and_o virtue_n he_o that_o have_v raise_v in_o other_o a_o opinion_n of_o his_o virtue_n have_v by_o consequence_n render_v himself_o more_o valuable_a and_o considerable_a to_o they_o for_o such_o be_v the_o beauty_n and_o majesty_n of_o virtue_n that_o it_o command_v from_o all_o some_o degree_n of_o affection_n and_o respect_n and_o such_o be_v the_o manifold_a use_n of_o it_o in_o the_o world_n that_o he_o who_o be_v possess_v of_o it_o be_v present_o account_v of_o as_o more_o worthy_a and_o more_o serviceable_a than_o other_o man_n which_o be_v a_o character_n which_o command_v esteem_v now_o if_o you_o will_v possess_v man_n with_o the_o persuasion_n of_o your_o virtue_n the_o most_o effectual_a way_n be_v real_o to_o be_v what_o you_o will_v fain_o appear_v to_o be_v for_o a_o hypocrite_n can_v long_o be_v conceal_v and_o when_o he_o be_v discover_v he_o look_v more_o loathsome_a than_o a_o open_a sinner_n beside_o that_o a_o hypocrite_n lie_v under_o this_o one_o great_a disadvantage_n that_o his_o dissimulation_n once_o prove_v upon_o he_o his_o credit_n can_v never_o be_v redeem_v by_o his_o follow_a sincerity_n his_o very_a repentance_n shall_v never_o find_v credit_n with_o man_n there_o be_v no_o way_n leave_v man_n to_o distinguish_v it_o from_o a_o strain_n of_o his_o know_a art_n you_o must_v therefore_o be_v real_o virtuous_a if_o you_o will_v gain_v a_o reputation_n for_o virtue_n you_o must_v endeavour_v to_o be_v most_o eminent_a in_o these_o virtue_n which_o be_v proper_a to_o your_o station_n sobriety_n industry_n faithfulness_n &c_n &c_n for_o these_o be_v the_o virtue_n man_n require_v and_o regard_v in_o you_o there_o be_v scarce_o any_o place_n wherein_o there_o be_v not_o a_o opportunity_n of_o practise_v these_o in_o some_o degree_n which_o practice_n be_v one_o way_n and_o the_o best_a too_o of_o raise_v your_o reputation_n but_o beside_o this_o that_o you_o may_v both_o confirm_v and_o increase_v these_o virtue_n in_o yourselves_o and_o the_o opinion_n that_o you_o have_v of_o they_o in_o other_o you_o must_v first_o industrious_o avoid_v all_o vicious_a company_n for_o this_o if_o it_o do_v not_o destroy_v your_o virtue_n which_o be_v next_o to_o a_o miracle_n it_o will_v certain_o destroy_v your_o credit_n for_o no_o wise_a man_n will_v ever_o believe_v that_o you_o can_v be_v otherwise_o than_o vicious_a in_o vicious_a company_n this_o be_v general_o the_o ruin_n of_o most_o servant_n it_o be_v here_o they_o learn_v to_o despise_v virtue_n and_o their_o master_n it_o be_v here_o they_o learn_v to_o love_v liberty_n and_o idleness_n and_o final_o it_o be_v here_o they_o learn_v those_o sin_n which_o they_o can_v neither_o maintain_v nor_o enjoy_v without_o the_o guilt_n of_o disobedience_n and_o unfaithfulness_n to_o their_o master_n therefore_o follow_v the_o advice_n of_o solomon_n prov._n 4.14_o 15._o enter_v not_o into_o the_o path_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o go_v not_o in_o the_o way_n of_o evil_a man_n avoid_v it_o pass_v not_o by_o it_o turn_v from_o it_o and_o pass_v away_o where_o the_o wise_a man_n do_v dread_n of_o dishonour_v christ_n and_o provoke_a god_n by_o it_o those_o other_o property_n of_o the_o right_a performance_n of_o this_o duty_n singleness_n of_o heart_n cheerfulness_n etc._n etc._n as_o they_o respect_v your_o duty_n towards_o your_o master_n shall_v be_v treat_v in_o their_o proper_a place_n i_o be_o only_o here_o to_o mind_v you_o that_o they_o be_v here_o press_v upon_o you_o as_o duty_n to_o god_n the_o apostle_n intimate_v that_o where_o the_o master_n eye_n can_v not_o there_o god_n eye_n will_v see_v regard_n and_o mark_v the_o behaviour_n of_o the_o servant_n and_o eye_n be_v upon_o he_o that_o be_v govern_v by_o this_o conscience_n he_o will_v not_o do_v how_o far_o soever_o he_o be_v absent_a for_o he_o will_v fear_v damnation_n more_o than_o the_o loss_n of_o his_o service_n and_o the_o displeasure_n of_o god_n more_o than_o that_o of_o man._n a_o second_o duty_n towards_o god_n which_o i_o will_v recommend_v to_o servant_n be_v god_n 2._o trust_v in_o god_n trust_v in_o he_o or_o dependence_n upon_o he_o there_o be_v no_o state_n so_o secure_a or_o so_o fortunate_a as_o not_o to_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o god_n and_o consequent_o none_o wherein_o servant_n they_o be_v therefore_o to_o endeavour_v to_o be_v eminent_a in_o this_o grace_n there_o be_v no_o way_n by_o which_o they_o can_v more_o direct_o and_o immediate_o own_o god_n by_o which_o they_o can_v make_v a_o more_o public_a and_o eminent_a profession_n of_o their_o firm_a belief_n of_o his_o wisdom_n power_n and_o goodness_n the_o servant_n therefore_o must_v learn_v to_o look_v upon_o god_n as_o his_o father_n as_o his_o patron_n as_o his_o guardian_n as_o all_o in_o all_o to_o he_o to_o he_o he_o must_v resort_v for_o counsel_n to_o he_o he_o must_v complain_v if_o wrong_a of_o he_o he_o must_v beg_v assistance_n and_o on_o he_o alone_o he_o must_v rely_v for_o a_o blessing_n in_o all_o he_o do_v and_o for_o provision_n he_o must_v learn_v to_o call_v upon_o he_o in_o all_o his_o strait_n and_o praise_v he_o in_o all_o his_o enjoyment_n from_o the_o conscientious_a practice_n of_o this_o duty_n the_o master_n will_v reap_v two_o great_a advantage_n the_o first_o that_o his_o servant_n will_v do_v his_o duty_n with_o much_o better_a courage_n as_o aim_v in_o all_o he_o do_v to_o recommend_v himself_o not_o only_o to_o his_o master_n who_o power_n to_o the_o service_n of_o joseph_n and_o laban_n in_o that_o of_o jacob_n the_o prosperity_n of_o those_o idolater_n be_v owe_v to_o the_o religion_n of_o their_o servant_n the_o servant_n beside_o the_o contentment_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o his_o mind_n arise_v from_o his_o frequent_a address_n to_o god_n and_o beside_o the_o actual_a blessing_n which_o god_n will_v one_o time_n or_o other_o certain_o bestow_v upon_o those_o that_o trust_v in_o he_o will_v also_o find_v a_o good_a support_n a_o ready_a antidote_n against_o all_o the_o real_a and_o imaginary_a evil_n of_o his_o state_n that_o sense_n of_o which_o they_o ought_v such_o be_v for_o instance_n raise_v dissension_n and_o feud_n in_o the_o family_n by_o lie_v and_o whisper_v second_o blast_v the_o credit_n and_o reputation_n of_o their_o master_n and_o mistress_n whether_o by_o false_a or_o true_a report_n the_o guilt_n of_o these_o practice_n will_v be_v evident_a to_o he_o who_o consider_v the_o spread_a report_n though_o true_a to_o another_o disadvantage_n be_v uncharitableness_n in_o any_o man_n but_o in_o a_o servant_n it_o be_v not_o only_o a_o breach_n of_o charity_n but_o of_o faith_n and_o secrecy_n too_o and_o the_o black_a ingratitude_n to_o boot_v and_o if_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n to_o spread_v a_o uncharitable_a truth_n how_o much_o a_o great_a to_o forge_v a_o malicious_a lie_n for_o one_o neighbour_n or_o one_o stranger_n to_o belie_v or_o slander_v another_o by_o a_o false_a charge_n be_v a_o effect_n &_o property_n not_o only_o of_o a_o mean_a but_o devilish_a spirit_n what_o name_n then_o can_v this_o sin_n find_v when_o a_o master_n or_o a_o mistress_n be_v thus_o treat_v by_o a_o servant_n who_o lie_v under_o not_o only_o the_o general_a obligation_n of_o charity_n truth_n and_o justice_n but_o also_o more_o particular_a and_o if_o it_o can_v be_v more_o sacred_a one_o of_o secrecy_n faith_n and_o gratitude_n the_o same_o thing_n may_v be_v say_v of_o kindle_v strife_n for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o heinous_a wickedness_n in_o any_o one_o to_o stir_v up_o contention_n by_o lie_v and_o whisper_a how_o much_o more_o in_o a_o servant_n who_o be_v so_o strict_o
