remove_v his_o diffidence_n and_o set_v his_o soul_n entire_o at_o peace_n 2._o if_o the_o patient_n have_v no_o cause_n to_o mistrust_v god_n goodness_n to_o he_o but_o be_v terrify_v only_o with_o the_o remembrance_n of_o his_o past_a sin_n or_o the_o temptation_n he_o be_v now_o disturb_v with_o then_o let_v the_o minister_n excite_v his_o hope_n first_o towards_o god_n who_o he_o have_v offend_v by_o tell_v he_o that_o god_n be_v always_o ready_a to_o forgive_v he_o that_o he_o be_v a_o merciful_a father_n that_o his_o grace_n be_v infinite_a that_o he_o be_v full_a of_o tenderness_n and_o compassion_n and_o that_o his_o love_n far_o surpass_v the_o sin_n of_o man_n that_o he_o prevent_v and_o assist_v we_o by_o the_o inspiration_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n and_o pardon_v our_o iniquity_n when_o we_o be_v true_o sorrowful_a for_o they_o second_o towards_o christ_n with_o these_o word_n our_o sin_n we_o must_v confess_v be_v many_o and_o great_a but_o god_n have_v lay_v they_o all_o upon_o jesus_n christ_n by_o who_o suffering_n we_o be_v redeem_v from_o they_o and_o forasmuch_o as_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o make_v satisfaction_n for_o they_o by_o reason_n of_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n his_o love_n for_o we_o have_v extend_v so_o far_o as_o to_o give_v his_o only_a son_n to_o be_v a_o saviour_n to_o we_o his_o humility_n have_v bring_v down_o and_o destroy_v our_o pride_n his_o patience_n our_o passion_n his_o charity_n our_o hatred_n his_o cross_n our_o luxury_n and_o his_o obedience_n even_o to_o die_v for_o we_o have_v blot_v out_o all_o our_o transgression_n and_o as_o the_o least_o of_o his_o torment_n be_v sufficient_a to_o satisfy_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n so_o through_o these_o infinite_a merit_n of_o he_o may_v we_o ask_v of_o he_o both_o the_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o inheritance_n of_o his_o kingdom_n let_v the_o patient_n for_o his_o comfort_n remember_v that_o he_o be_v to_o have_v for_o his_o judge_n this_o same_o jesus_n who_o be_v now_o at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n make_v intercession_n for_o he_o and_o call_v to_o mind_n how_o gracious_a he_o be_v to_o st._n peter_n who_o he_o pardon_v almost_o the_o same_o moment_n he_o deny_v he_o let_v he_o think_v of_o the_o charitable_a word_n he_o pronounce_v upon_o the_o cross_n on_o behalf_n of_o his_o very_a enemy_n father_n forgive_v they_o for_o they_o know_v not_o what_o they_o do_v and_o those_o he_o speak_v to_o the_o penitent_a thief_n that_o the_o selfsame_a day_n he_o shall_v be_v with_o he_o in_o paradise_n in_o short_a let_v he_o be_v persuade_v that_o god_n have_v a_o great_a desire_n to_o save_v he_o than_o he_o himself_o can_v have_v to_o be_v save_v and_o therefore_o he_o have_v not_o the_o least_o cause_n to_o be_v diffident_a of_o his_o mercy_n 3._o the_o minister_n may_v sustain_v his_o hope_n and_o confidence_n in_o god_n goodness_n and_o mercy_n by_o the_o example_n of_o divers_a holy_a person_n that_o remit_v the_o injury_n do_v to_o they_o as_o joseph_n david_n st._n stephen_n and_o other_o teach_v he_o therefrom_o that_o if_o these_o who_o be_v but_o man_n have_v so_o much_o meekness_n and_o charity_n as_o to_o forgive_v their_o very_a persecutor_n what_o ought_v not_o we_o to_o expect_v from_o god_n the_o fountain_n of_o mercy_n who_o goodness_n will_v appear_v still_o the_o great_a by_o how_o much_o more_o numerous_a the_o sin_n be_v which_o he_o pardon_v to_o we_o that_o therefore_o provide_v he_o have_v a_o break_a and_o contrite_a heart_n he_o need_v not_o in_o the_o least_o apprehend_v his_o be_v reject_v or_o abandon_v for_o though_o his_o transgression_n be_v more_o heinous_a than_o those_o of_o the_o devil_n themselves_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n be_v sufficient_a for_o the_o abolish_n of_o they_o we_o do_v not_o mean_v that_o the_o minister_n shall_v say_v all_o these_o thing_n at_o once_o and_o in_o the_o order_n here_o prescribe_v as_o if_o he_o make_v a_o set_a discourse_n to_o he_o but_o that_o he_o use_v his_o discretion_n in_o speak_v they_o by_o little_a and_o little_a and_o at_o several_a time_n according_a as_o he_o shall_v find_v the_o patient_n in_o a_o condition_n of_o hear_v he_o and_o of_o receive_v comfort_n therefrom_o he_o may_v also_o introduce_v and_o relate_v in_o few_o word_n the_o history_n of_o the_o prodigal_a son_n of_o mary_n magdalen_n of_o the_o samaritan_n and_o of_o the_o cananitish_a woman_n mention_v in_o the_o gospel_n with_o that_o of_o the_o whole_a people_n of_o the_o jew_n who_o god_n conduct_v into_o the_o land_n of_o promise_n notwithstanding_o their_o continual_a rebellion_n and_o unfaithfulness_n let_v he_o likewise_o put_v the_o patient_n in_o mind_n of_o the_o passage_n in_o ezekiel_n where_o god_n say_v he_o will_v forget_v the_o iniquity_n of_o a_o sinner_n at_o what_o hour_n soever_o he_o shall_v turn_v and_o repent_v that_o pardon_n be_v in_o the_o gospel_n itself_o secure_v to_o we_o upon_o condition_n of_o our_o forgive_n our_o enemy_n and_o therefore_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o doubt_v of_o forgiveness_n at_o god_n hand_n if_o we_o for_o his_o sake_n free_o and_o entire_o forgive_v they_o that_o have_v offend_v we_o thus_o shall_v the_o minister_n support_v his_o hope_n by_o continual_o say_v before_o he_o god_n mercy_n and_o promise_n of_o pardon_n to_o we_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o christ_n blood_n that_o be_v shed_v for_o all_o sinner_n and_o assure_v he_o that_o god_n will_v not_o fail_v to_o assist_v he_o by_o his_o grace_n nor_o will_v suffer_v he_o to_o fall_v away_o and_o miscarry_v in_o what_o concern_v his_o eternal_a salvation_n which_o have_v say_v and_o add_v thereto_o what_o else_o he_o may_v think_v fit_a for_o the_o same_o purpose_n he_o shall_v admonish_v the_o patient_n to_o apply_v himself_o to_o god_n in_o this_o manner_n lord_n i_o be_o a_o ungrateful_a son_n yet_o still_o thy_o son_n thou_o have_v both_o create_v i_o and_o adopt_v i_o in_o jesus_n christ_n thy_o very_a son_n co-substantial_a with_o thou_o o_o lord_n in_o thou_o i_o have_v put_v my_o trust_n let_v i_o never_o be_v confound_v i_o be_o a_o prodigal_a child_n i_o acknowledge_v that_o i_o have_v sin_v against_o heaven_n and_o before_o thou_o and_o be_o no_o more_o worthy_a to_o be_v call_v thy_o son_n but_o o_o my_o god_n be_v not_o thy_o mercy_n great_a than_o
