least_o degree_n injurious_a if_o god_n will_v not_o be_v merciful_a unto_o he_o for_o ah_o how_o unfit_a be_v he_o to_o receive_v mercy_n but_o yet_o withal_o he_o take_v heart_n in_o the_o most_o humble_a abasement_n of_o himself_o most_o earnest_o to_o call_v and_o cry_v and_o beg_v for_o mercy_n and_o forgiveness_n and_o for_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n to_o change_v his_o nature_n from_o that_o loathsome_a disposition_n which_o trouble_v he_o now_o it_o may_v be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o hope_n have_v his_o heart_n so_o much_o soften_v that_o tear_n before_o stop_v up_o by_o that_o bind_a force_n that_o strong_a and_o secret_a sorrow_n show_v themselves_o to_o have_v in_o man_n heart_n do_v even_o begin_v to_o flow_v forth_o from_o he_o to_o add_v if_o it_o may_v be_v a_o great_a fervour_n unto_o his_o prayer_n and_o if_o at_o first_o second_o three_o four_o and_o it_o may_v be_v many_o more_o time_n he_o seem_v to_o have_v cry_v in_o vain_a because_o none_o answer_n come_v but_o heaven_n itself_o seem_v strong_o stop_v up_o against_o he_o yet_o he_o go_v again_o still_o to_o the_o same_o throne_n of_o grace_n again_o reckon_v up_o the_o same_o and_o if_o he_o can_v also_o new_a sin_n again_o bewail_v they_o bitter_o and_o hearty_o implore_v both_o pardon_n and_o help_v again_o this_o be_v to_o come_v unto_o christ_n jesus_n heavy_a lade_v as_o our_o saviour_n comfortable_o invit_v we_o this_o be_v to_o seek_v god_n while_o he_o may_v be_v find_v and_o to_o call_v upon_o he_o while_o he_o be_v near_o as_o the_o prophet_n exhort_v us._n which_o his_o misery_n do_v but_o multiply_v idle_a word_n in_o seem_v to_o pray_v when_o he_o feel_v it_o be_v so_o whole_o drown_v and_o swallow_v up_o thereby_o that_o he_o can_v run_v unto_o heaven_n for_o help_v but_o with_o the_o regenerate_a prayer_n and_o supplication_n be_v always_o find_v and_o a_o continue_v therein_o also_o how_o many_o bitter_a repulse_n soever_o he_o suffer_v at_o god_n hand_n as_o often_o he_o do_v very_o many_o the_o lord_n either_o defer_v or_o make_v more_o speed_n to_o answer_v as_o he_o see_v most_o behooveful_a for_o the_o profit_n of_o each_o of_o his_o servant_n and_o proportion_v the_o fruit_n of_o his_o grace_n this_o way_n to_o his_o knowledge_n of_o their_o ability_n and_o fitness_n to_o receive_v a_o answer_n or_o to_o brook_v delay_n it_o must_v not_o be_v deny_v but_o that_o the_o man_n that_o never_o shall_v be_v regenerate_v in_o the_o gripe_a and_o twinge_n of_o his_o accuse_a conscience_n through_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o bare_a illumination_n of_o the_o spirit_n may_v come_v so_o far_o as_o to_o roar_v out_o his_o lord_n have_v mercy_n upon_o i_o very_o often_o yea_o he_o may_v by_o persuasion_n and_o entreaty_n of_o friend_n be_v bring_v to_o read_v some_o good_a prayer_n out_o of_o a_o prayer-book_n yea_o to_o be_v glad_a to_o have_v a_o other_o pray_v for_o he_o in_o his_o own_o hear_n and_o in_o some_o sense_n also_o to_o join_v with_o he_o yea_o more_o by_o frequent_a persuade_v urge_v teach_v of_o some_o godly_a man_n he_o may_v be_v draw_v to_o pray_v for_o himself_o but_o yet_o still_o the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n be_v absent_a in_o that_o he_o do_v not_o find_v himself_o by_o a_o inward_a move_n of_o his_o own_o heart_n incline_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o his_o grief_n and_o fear_n to_o betake_v himself_o to_o god_n for_o help_v by_o call_v upon_o his_o name_n and_o which_o be_v a_o main_a observation_n in_o this_o matter_n if_o he_o pray_v he_o pray_v almost_o altogether_o for_o pardon_n and_o for_o favour_n little_a for_o grace_n and_o holiness_n whereas_o the_o christian_a man_n by_o a_o secret_a draw_v of_o his_o own_o inward_a soul_n wrought_v by_o this_o regenerate_a spirit_n come_v unto_o the_o lord_n with_o his_o request_n beg_v grace_n and_o holiness_n with_o no_o less_o earnestness_n than_o remission_n and_o salvation_n yea_o and_o have_v once_o begin_v this_o course_n he_o find_v so_o much_o refresh_v thereby_o that_o he_o can_v but_o continue_v to_o do_v it_o even_o sometime_o with_o much_o struggle_v against_o of_o his_o own_o hart_n through_o fear_n and_o doubt_n thereof_o so_o it_o be_v one_o thing_n to_o be_v persuade_v to_o pray_v by_o man_n and_o to_o do_v it_o for_o ease_v sake_n another_o thing_n to_o be_v incline_v unto_o it_o by_o the_o private_a and_o secret_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n one_o thing_n to_o beg_v for_o pardon_n not_o much_o mind_v amendment_n another_o thing_n to_o cry_v for_o the_o help_n
manner_n of_o the_o bring_v to_o pass_v of_o this_o most_o excellent_a and_o wonderful_a work_n of_o a_o new_a beget_n by_o the_o most_o excellent_a and_o wonderful_a begetter_n the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n and_o by_o that_o excellent_a and_o wonderful_a seed_n of_o life_n the_o word_n of_o truth_n four_o 3._o the_o effect_n of_o regeneration_n which_o be_v four_o now_o i_o will_v declare_v unto_o you_o that_o which_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n i_o promise_v the_o effect_n that_o follow_v hereupon_o not_o every_o particular_a for_o who_o can_v name_v they_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n abound_v in_o multiplicity_n of_o action_n and_o operation_n as_o it_o be_v eat_v drink_v breathe_a grieve_v strive_v smart_a of_o the_o soul_n as_o the_o life_n of_o nature_n but_o alone_o some_o principal_n and_o most_o eminent_a by_o the_o see_n of_o which_o in_o itself_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o new_a bear_v babe_n of_o christ_n shall_v have_v cause_n to_o receive_v much_o comfort_n the_o principal_a effect_n therefore_o of_o regeneration_n be_v these_o four_o first_o a_o spiritual_a combat_n second_o a_o good_a life_n for_o all_o this_o combat_n three_o a_o knowledge_n of_o that_o good_a estate_n whereinto_o the_o regenerate_a be_v translate_v four_o spiritual_a growth_n in_o those_o grace_n that_o at_o first_o be_v but_o weak_a and_o feeble_a in_o the_o regenerate_a for_o alack_o a_o infant_n be_v a_o very_a tender_a thing_n and_o so_o be_v god_n infant_n for_o the_o first_o of_o these_o with_o 1._o the_o spiritual_a combat_n with_o no_o soon_o do_v a_o christian_a begin_v to_o draw_v the_o breath_n of_o this_o new_a life_n but_o he_o find_v himself_o call_v to_o fight_v even_o in_o the_o very_a cradle_n as_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v and_o as_o they_o fable_v of_o that_o renown_a heathen_a man_n he_o stand_v in_o a_o pitch_a field_n of_o enemy_n so_o soon_o as_o he_o can_v go_v upon_o the_o foot_n of_o his_o soul_n and_o there_o he_o must_v never_o cease_v give_v and_o take_v blow_n till_o he_o cease_v to_o be_v in_o this_o low_a world_n although_o indeed_o there_o be_v some_o intermission_n and_o relaxation_n of_o the_o strength_n and_o fury_n of_o the_o encounter_n as_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n that_o know_v all_o thing_n to_o temper_v they_o to_o his_o strength_n and_o direct_v they_o to_o his_o good_a devil_n 1._o the_o devil_n first_o the_o devil_n begin_v to_o play_v his_o part_n with_o he_o and_o find_v he_o gain_v out_o of_o his_o hand_n and_o pull_v from_o under_o his_o tyranny_n muster_v up_o a_o army_n of_o tentation_n wherewith_o at_o least_o to_o annoy_v he_o if_o he_o can_v as_o he_o can_v prevail_v to_o bring_v he_o back_o again_o to_o his_o servitude_n and_o thraldom_n for_o when_o the_o strong_a man_n arm_v keep_v his_o house_n all_o thing_n be_v at_o quiet_a under_o he_o but_o when_o he_o feel_v himself_o bind_v and_o cast_v out_o and_o his_o house_n rifle_v by_o a_o strong_a than_o himself_o than_o it_o must_v needs_o follow_v that_o he_o will_v bestir_v himself_o and_o lay_v about_o he_o with_o all_o the_o power_n that_o he_o can_v make_v so_o now_o the_o poor_a christian_n though_o perhaps_o but_o a_o infant_n in_o grace_n be_v violent_o assail_v by_o satan_n according_a to_o his_o nature_n with_o extreme_a rage_n and_o subtlety_n and_o if_o it_o have_v so_o fall_v out_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v fain_o to_o batter_v down_o the_o height_n of_o his_o heart_n and_o make_v passage_n for_o himself_o with_o horrible_a fear_n and_o terror_n then_o satan_n labour_v often_o to_o revive_v those_o terror_n and_o by_o infinite_a cavil_n and_o objection_n to_o make_v he_o even_o despair_v of_o his_o salvation_n there_o be_v none_o end_v almost_o of_o the_o devil_n strive_v in_o this_o case_n but_o he_o will_v labour_v continual_o with_o new_a doubt_n and_o objection_n to_o call_v his_o salvation_n into_o question_n and_o to_o make_v he_o think_v that_o he_o shall_v never_o enjoy_v the_o quiet_a possession_n of_o his_o heavenly_a inheritance_n yet_o against_o all_o these_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n so_o strengthen_v he_o that_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o gracious_a promise_n of_o god_n and_o by_o the_o power_n of_o constant_a prayer_n and_o supplication_n he_o support_v himself_o and_o still_o continue_v to_o rest_v himself_o upon_o the_o free_a goodness_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n notwithstanding_o all_o these_o objection_n and_o shake_n neither_o yet_o will_v satan_n rest_v here_o but_o be_v further_a troublesome_a unto_o he_o by_o stir_v up_o innumerable_a vile_a suggestion_n to_o draw_v he_o to_o the_o commit_n of_o some_o most_o notorious_a sin_n perhaps_o worse_o than_o ever_o in_o all_o his_o life_n before_o and_o for_o his_o old_a corruption_n he_o cease_v not_o to_o provoke_v and_o incense_v they_o with_o all_o vehemency_n that_o he_o may_v drive_v he_o into_o lewd_a and_o hateful_a practice_n of_o sin_n but_o against_o these_o suggestion_n also_o he_o fight_v resolute_o much_o indeed_o vex_v and_o disquiet_v with_o they_o but_o still_o reject_v &_o abhor_v they_o and_o beat_v they_o back_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o be_v his_o sword_n &_o by_o constant_a supplication_n whereby_o still_o he_o settle_v his_o soul_n firm_a and_o fast_o in_o his_o holy_a purpose_n of_o obedience_n i_o confess_v that_o the_o devil_n be_v a_o common_a enemy_n to_o all_o mankind_n both_o sanctify_a and_o unsanctified_a and_o therefore_o the_o unregenerate_a also_o be_v much_o molest_v with_o he_o oftentimes_o when_o he_o grow_v exorbitant_a and_o seek_v to_o pull_v they_o by_o the_o strength_n of_o utter_a despair_n as_o it_o be_v quick_a into_o hell_n and_o to_o make_v they_o kill_v themselves_o or_o do_v some_o other_o most_o gross_a and_o unnatural_a crime_n but_o satan_n be_v not_o willing_a to_o deal_v so_o rough_o with_o they_o if_o he_o can_v choose_v for_o he_o stand_v ever_o in_o most_o danger_n of_o lose_v they_o when_o he_o carry_v himself_o towards_o they_o in_o so_o hard_a a_o fashion_n wherefore_o he_o rather_o flatter_v and_o faun_n endeavour_v to_o rock_v they_o asleep_a still_o if_o he_o can_v in_o the_o cradle_n of_o security_n and_o presumption_n neither_o will_v he_o storm_v thus_o but_o when_o he_o see_v his_o advantage_n in_o regard_n of_o some_o bodily_a cross_n or_o distemper_n or_o that_o he_o see_v the_o lord_n will_v needs_o awaken_v their_o sleepy_a conscience_n but_o for_o the_o poor_a christian_a he_o will_v not_o give_v he_o rest_n no_o not_o for_o a_o day_n or_o two_o from_o the_o most_o horrible_a fear_n and_o from_o the_o foul_a tentation_n whereto_o his_o corruption_n give_v any_o passage_n or_o from_o other_o more_o hideous_a especial_o if_o he_o see_v he_o weak_a scrupulous_a and_o iniudicious_a than_o he_o make_v use_v of_o such_o ignorance_n and_o weakness_n and_o will_v never_o find_v time_n to_o make_v a_o end_n of_o vex_v he_o but_o that_o the_o lord_n himself_o do_v please_v to_o sound_v a_o retreat_n indeed_o the_o lord_n by_o this_o mean_n to_o keep_v down_o his_o pride_n and_o overmaster_n his_o strong_a corruption_n do_v give_v much_o way_n to_o satan_n rage_n but_o so_o still_o that_o he_o forget_v not_o to_o refresh_v he_o with_o seasonable_a aid_n of_o his_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n and_o with_o the_o strength_n and_o comfort_n of_o his_o holy_a word_n and_o promise_n and_o in_o these_o term_n stand_v he_o with_o satan_n ever_o almost_o assail_v and_o encumber_v by_o he_o and_o beside_o this_o the_o flesh_n also_o flesh_n 2._o of_o the_o flesh_n as_o a_o more_o dangerous_a enemy_n though_o not_o so_o violent_a step_v forth_o to_o encounter_v he_o for_o though_o by_o grace_n it_o be_v wound_v and_o mortify_v yet_o be_v it_o not_o quite_o and_o clean_o take_v away_o and_o remove_v wherefore_o the_o corruption_n of_o his_o heart_n also_o grow_v violent_a in_o he_o lust_a against_o the_o spirit_n and_o with_o a_o kind_n of_o insinuate_a and_o secret_a inclination_n carry_v he_o forward_o to_o all_o the_o former_a lust_n of_o his_o ignorance_n and_o perhaps_o to_o some_o that_o be_v more_o loathsome_a and_o abominable_a now_o unbelief_n passion_n lust_n revenge_n wantonness_n worldliness_n and_o all_o the_o old_a distemper_n will_v be_v move_v in_o his_o soul_n and_o he_o shall_v find_v himself_o ever_o and_o anon_o little_o less_o than_o ready_a to_o yield_v unto_o they_o and_o to_o be_v quite_o overcome_v by_o they_o but_o the_o spirit_n in_o this_o case_n reviu_v itself_o also_o and_o lust_n against_o the_o flesh_n stir_v up_o good_a motion_n against_o the_o bad_a and_o holy_a desire_n against_o the_o unholy_a and_o virtuous_a wish_n against_o the_o vicious_a and_o hearty_a prayer_n and_o request_n to_o god_n against_o the_o sinful_a inclination_n of_o the_o evil_a heart_n so_o that_o at_o length_n his_o
godly_a purpose_n grow_v strong_a and_o he_o remain_v resolute_a not_o to_o work_v wickedness_n for_o all_o his_o earnest_a proneness_n thereunto_o thus_o the_o regenerate_a find_v himself_o strange_o divide_v within_o and_o against_o himself_o sometime_o he_o will_v be_v sinful_a and_o commit_v such_o and_o such_o wickedness_n and_o yet_o again_o have_v better_o think_v of_o the_o matter_n he_o will_v not_o at_o other_o time_n he_o will_v cast_v away_o all_o sin_n and_o fain_o perform_v all_o good_a duty_n with_o all_o constancy_n but_o he_o find_v something_o within_o resist_v and_o rebel_a they_o quarrel_n 3._o in_o the_o motive_n of_o the_o opposition_n 4._o in_o the_o mean_n of_o resistance_n and_o five_o in_o the_o issue_n thereof_o first_o in_o the_o unregenerate_a the_o will_n be_v whole_o carry_v after_o sin_n alone_o the_o conscience_n make_v a_o clamorous_a gainsay_n and_o suffer_v not_o the_o will_v to_o go_v on_o in_o its_o evil_a course_n uncontrolled_a he_o will_v with_o hungry_a dog_n have_v a_o strong_a appetite_n to_o be_v devour_v some_o meat_n that_o stand_v before_o he_o but_o at_o the_o same_o time_n he_o see_v a_o man_n stand_v by_o with_o a_o cudgel_n to_o strike_v he_o if_o he_o touch_v it_o now_o his_o appetite_n be_v altogether_o to_o the_o meat_n but_o he_o be_v fear_v and_o overawed_n by_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o man_n that_o be_v ready_a to_o strike_v he_o so_o be_v it_o with_o the_o unsanctified_a man_n sin_n be_v his_o food_n his_o will_n be_v whole_o carry_v to_o it_o but_o the_o conscience_n hold_v as_o it_o be_v a_o cudgel_n over_o by_o those_o that_o be_v infamous_a among_o man_n as_o in_o perjury_n murder_n adultery_n theft_n false_a witness_n bear_v and_o such_o like_a for_o small_a evil_n and_o such_o as_o the_o world_n little_a account_n of_o though_o know_v and_o confess_v to_o be_v sin_n the_o natural_a conscience_n be_v content_a to_o dispense_v and_o daub_v and_o daily_o and_o give_v easy_a way_n to_o the_o do_v
