spira_n there_o you_o may_v see_v what_o amaze_a astonish_a expression_n and_o wish_n come_v from_o he_o under_o a_o sense_n of_o god_n wrath_n lie_v upon_o he_o he_o be_v so_o torment_v that_o but_o he_o be_v watch_v by_o his_o friend_n and_o can_v not_o get_v opportunity_n he_o will_v have_v kill_v himself_o yea_o and_o consider_v our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n who_o never_o have_v any_o sin_n and_o stay_v the_o heart_n upon_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n to_o deliver_v such_o a_o one_o from_o go_v down_o to_o the_o pit_n and_o bring_v the_o soul_n to_o everlasting_a life_n object_n i_o state_n and_o condition_n they_o that_o be_v thus_o in_o the_o flesh_n can_v please_v god_n and_o this_o be_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o holy-ghost_n in_o rom._n 7.5_o for_o when_o we_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n say_v he_o etc._n etc._n why_o he_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n in_o one_o sense_n but_o he_o be_v not_o in_o the_o flesh_n in_o another_o sense_n when_o we_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n that_o be_v when_o we_o be_v unbeliever_n in_o a_o fleshly_a carnal_a state_n when_o we_o be_v so_o in_o the_o flesh_n we_o can_v not_o please_v god_n and_o no_o man_n that_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n in_o that_o sense_n can_v please_v god_n but_o why_o be_v it_o not_o possible_a for_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o be_v a_o unbeliever_n to_o please_v god_n why_o so_o why_o look_v but_o into_o the_o former_a verse_n rom._n 8.7_o there_o he_o give_v you_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o why_o those_o that_o be_v unbeliever_n can_v please_v god_n because_o the_o carnal_a mind_n be_v enmity_n against_o god_n it_o be_v not_o subject_a to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n nether_a indeed_o can_v be_v and_o then_o he_o bring_v in_o this_o conclusion_n so_o then_o they_o that_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n they_o that_o have_v a_o carnal_a mind_n they_o that_o be_v altogether_o unbeliever_n can_v please_v god_n because_o they_o be_v enemy_n to_o god_n enemy_n in_o the_o high_a degree_n for_o mark_v the_o expression_n he_o do_v not_o say_v the_o carnal_a mind_n be_v a_o enemy_n to_o god_n but_o he_o put_v it_o in_o the_o abstract_n the_o carnal_a mind_n be_v enmity_n against_o god_n enmity_n itself_o it_o be_v irreconcilable_a to_o god_n it_o be_v not_o subject_a to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n neither_o indeed_o can_v be_v till_o god_n change_v it_o now_o see_v the_o force_n of_o the_o demonstration_n every_o unbeliever_n be_v a_o enemy_n to_o god_n and_o every_o thing_n he_o do_v come_v from_o a_o principle_n of_o enmity_n against_o god_n and_o do_v you_o think_v that_o can_v please_v god_n though_o he_o seem_v to_o do_v much_o for_o god_n he_o pray_v much_o and_z reads_z much_o and_o be_v much_o in_o thanksgiving_n and_o much_o in_o confess_v of_o sin_n but_o all_o this_o come_v from_o a_o principle_n of_o enmity_n against_o god_n and_o what_o can_v this_o please_v god_n suppose_v now_o you_o shall_v have_v a_o enemy_n and_o he_o shall_v come_v and_o seem_v to_o speak_v you_o fair_a and_o you_o know_v that_o he_o have_v a_o heart_n full_a of_o hatred_n and_o enmity_n against_o you_o possible_o he_o come_v and_o confess_v he_o have_v do_v you_o wrong_n and_o he_o be_v sorry_a for_o it_o but_o he_o hope_v he_o shall_v do_v so_o no_o more_o if_o you_o know_v he_o come_v and_o speak_v this_o with_o a_o spirit_n of_o enmity_n and_o that_o he_o do_v maintain_v his_o enmity_n as_o full_o in_o his_o heart_n and_o mind_n as_o ever_o be_v you_o please_v with_o these_o confession_n no_o you_o abhor_v he_o the_o more_o because_o he_o come_v in_o a_o dissemble_a hipocritical_a way_n now_o god_n see_v and_o know_v our_o heart_n possible_o we_o may_v be_v take_v with_o some_o such_o expression_n of_o a_o enemy_n and_o think_v he_o mean_v as_o he_o say_v and_o take_v it_o in_o good_a part_n but_o a_o man_n can_v deceive_v god_n so_o when_o a_o unbeliever_n come_v and_o confess_v his_o sin_n to_o god_n the_o lord_n see_v he_o do_v it_o with_o a_o spirit_n of_o enmity_n he_o come_v with_o his_o humble_a petition_n and_o supplication_n and_o the_o heart_n be_v full_a of_o enmity_n and_o hatred_n against_o god_n will_v the_o lord_n now_o accept_v of_o this_o he_o come_v and_o give_v thanks_o to_o god_n but_o the_o lord_n look_v upon_o all_o as_o hypocritical_a and_o flatter_a and_o can_v this_o be_v please_v to_o god_n in_o psalm_n 78.34_o when_o he_o slay_v they_o than_o they_o seek_v he_o and_o they_o return_v and_o inquire_v early_o after_o god_n verse_n 35._o and_o they_o remember_v that_o god_n be_v their_o rock_n and_o the_o high_a god_n their_o redeemer_n now_o they_o challenge_v acquaintance_n with_o god_n and_o claim_v interest_n in_o god_n well_o but_o what_o do_v the_o holy-ghost_n say_v of_o this_o their_o inquire_v after_o god_n verse_n 36._o nevertheless_o they_o flatter_v he_o with_o their_o mouth_n and_o they_o lie_v unto_o he_o with_o their_o tongue_n and_o can_v god_n be_v please_v with_o this_o i_o pray_v consider_v this_o be_v the_o yet_o consider_v be_v this_o faith_n or_o no_o if_o it_o be_v not_o faith_n it_o can_v please_v god_n possible_o you_o may_v desire_v and_o endeavour_v to_o walk_v in_o the_o strict_a way_n of_o profession_n and_o worship_n god_n in_o the_o close_a way_n suppose_v you_o do_v so_o you_o desire_v to_o walk_v in_o church-fellowship_n with_o the_o saint_n but_o this_o be_v not_o faith_n still_o and_o without_o faith_n be_v be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n i_o pray_v consider_v the_o apostle_n paul_n say_v paul_n before_o he_o be_v convert_v and_o be_v bring_v to_o believe_v on_o christ_n in_o act_n 16.5_o say_v he_o after_o the_o most_o straight_a sect_n of_o our_o religion_n i_o live_v a_o pharisee_n and_o say_v he_o in_o another_o place_n in_o phil._n 3.7_o 8_o 9_o as_o may_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n and_o how_o shall_v we_o partake_v of_o the_o lords-table_n in_o faith_n so_o as_o to_o please_v god_n i_o can_v come_v to_o answer_v this_o now_o but_o possible_o if_o the_o lord_n please_v i_o may_v speak_v something_o to_o that_o at_o some_o other_o time_n all_o that_o i_o have_v to_o say_v for_o the_o present_a be_v this_o you_o see_v friend_n brethren_n and_o belove_a what_o cause_n we_o have_v all_o of_o we_o i_o speak_v not_o only_o to_o unbeliever_n but_o to_o those_o that_o be_v believer_n as_o for_o unbeliever_n what_o cause_n have_v they_o to_o go_v home_o and_o bewail_v and_o bemoan_v their_o condition_n before_o the_o lord_n look_v back_o upon_o all_o that_o you_o have_v do_v throughout_o your_o whole_a life_n and_o you_o may_v write_v this_o upon_o it_o all_o you_o have_v displease_v god_n you_o have_v make_v many_o prayer_n and_o confess_v many_o sin_n and_o give_v thanks_o to_o god_n often_o you_o have_v read_v and_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o have_v do_v this_o and_o that_o and_o yet_o in_o all_o that_o you_o have_v do_v you_o have_v never_o please_v god_n because_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n go_v and_o bewail_v it_o before_o the_o lord_n that_o you_o have_v lead_v such_o a_o course_n of_o life_n that_o you_o have_v do_v nothing_o that_o have_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n and_o you_o that_o in_o every_o duty_n and_o service_n that_o we_o have_v perform_v but_o thus_o much_o shall_v suffice_v for_o this_o time_n sermon_n vi._n hebrew_n xi_o 6._o but_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v he_o the_o word_n as_o you_o have_v hear_v be_v a_o entire_a proposition_n doct._n that_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n by_o all_o all_o be_v not_o do_v in_o faith_n it_o can_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n quest_n you_o will_v say_v unto_o i_o then_o how_o shall_v we_o so_o act_v in_o faith_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o all_o duty_n and_o in_o the_o partake_n of_o all_o ordinance_n that_o so_o we_o may_v please_v god_n in_o what_o we_o do_v this_o be_v a_o great_a question_n and_o i_o shall_v desire_v through_o the_o lord_n assistance_n to_o speak_v something_o to_o this_o at_o this_o time_n and_o o_o brethren_n this_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o very_o great_a concernment_n to_o do_v all_o that_o we_o do_v in_o faith_n to_o pray_v every_o prayer_n in_o faith_n and_o every_o time_n we_o hear_v the_o word_n to_o hear_v it_o in_o faith_n and_o if_o we_o partake_v of_o the_o lords-table_n every_o time_n to_o partake_v in_o faith_n or_o else_o we_o do_v not_o please_v god_n in_o any_o of_o these_o duty_n let_v i_o therefore_o a_o little_a stir_n you_o up_o to_o it_o that_o you_o may_v be_v provoke_v if_o possible_a to_o do_v all_o that_o you_o do_v in_o faith_n brief_o let_v i_o hint_n three_o or_o four_o word_n that_o way_n to_o show_v you_o that_o it_o be_v of_o very_o great_a concernment_n for_o every_o one_o of_o we_o to_o perform_v every_o duty_n and_o to_o partake_v of_o every_o ordinance_n in_o a_o way_n of_o faith_n for_o first_o of_o all_o else_o all_o that_o ever_o we_o do_v all_o our_o labour_n all_o our_o endeavour_n all_o our_o pain_n in_o our_o duty_n and_o performance_n will_v be_v all_o in_o vain_a and_o will_v a_o wise_a man_n be_v willing_a to_o do_v any_o thing_n in_o vain_a to_o take_v pain_n and_o all_o in_o vain_a have_v you_o suffer_v so_o many_o thing_n say_v the_o apostle_n gal._n 3_o 4._o in_o vain_a true_o so_o may_v we_o say_v to_o those_o that_o do_v not_o exercise_v faith_n in_o their_o duty_n and_o performance_n have_v you_o do_v so_o many_o thing_n in_o vain_a will_v any_o of_o you_o take_v pain_n in_o your_o calling_n willing_o in_o vain_a and_o loose_v all_o your_o labour_n be_v you_o willing_a that_o all_o your_o labour_n and_o travel_n and_o pain_n from_o day_n to_o day_n shall_v be_v lose_v and_o all_o in_o vain_a you_o will_v count_v it_o a_o very_a grievous_a and_o uncomfortable_a thing_n if_o any_o of_o you_o shall_v take_v any_o great_a voyage_n by_o sea_n and_o all_o your_o voyage_n and_o hazard_n shall_v be_v in_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n upon_o we_o and_o that_o by_o the_o eternal_a spirit_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n this_o be_v the_o way_n and_o the_o only_a way_n whereby_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n come_v to_o be_v habitual_o clean_a and_o holy_a by_o faith_n in_o christ_n whereby_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o only_o justify_v from_o the_o gild_n of_o sin_n but_o there_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n convey_v and_o communicate_v to_o the_o soul_n whereby_o there_o be_v a_o principle_n of_o holiness_n of_o habitual_a holiness_n put_v upon_o the_o soul_n well_o this_o be_v now_o the_o first_o general_a rule_n and_o therefore_o i_o say_v brethren_n and_o friend_n it_o be_v of_o great_a concernment_n to_o we_o to_o look_v to_o that_o if_o we_o will_v act_v faith_n in_o our_o duty_n so_o as_o to_o please_v god_n we_o must_v first_o of_o all_o look_n that_o there_o be_v a_o work_n of_o faith_n wrought_v in_o our_o heart_n that_o we_o do_v true_o believe_v on_o christ_n and_o to_o that_o end_n we_o shall_v be_v venture_v to_o lean_v the_o weight_n of_o our_o soul_n upon_o christ_n and_o upon_o his_o blood_n and_o righteousness_n as_o it_o be_v tender_v and_o hold_v forth_o to_o we_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o to_o this_o end_n also_o let_v we_o wrestle_v with_o the_o lord_n and_o beg_v for_o the_o spirit_n of_o faith_n to_o be_v give_v out_o to_o we_o christ_n have_v promise_v that_o our_o heavenly_a father_n will_v give_v the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o they_o that_o ask_v he_o this_o be_v the_o first_o rule_n to_o look_v that_o we_o be_v true_a believer_n 2._o second_o as_o faith_n do_v possess_v the_o soul_n with_o habitual_a holiness_n so_o it_o be_v by_o faith_n also_o that_o a_o soul_n come_v to_o be_v cleanse_v from_o actual_a gild_n therefore_o the_o second_o rule_n to_o act_v in_o faith_n in_o our_o duty_n and_o performance_n be_v to_o put_v away_o all_o gild_n all_o sinful_a uncleanness_n from_o we_o when_o we_o come_v to_o perform_v any_o service_n or_o offer_v up_o any_o sacrifice_n to_o the_o lord_n if_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n come_v before_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o guilt_n of_o any_o know_a sin_n that_o he_o live_v in_o if_o he_o do_v not_o put_v that_o away_o it_o make_v all_o his_o duty_n unclean_a and_o not_o please_v to_o god_n a_o man_n can_v act_v in_o faith_n so_o long_o as_o he_o come_v know_o with_o any_o guilt_n upon_o his_o conscience_n live_v in_o the_o neglect_n of_o any_o know_a duty_n or_o live_v in_o the_o commission_n of_o any_o know_a sin_n if_o he_o live_v in_o it_o he_o can_v act_v in_o faith_n faith_n will_v purge_v and_o cleanse_v the_o soul_n from_o sin_n that_o he_o will_v put_v away_o all_o guilt_n when_o he_o come_v to_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n see_v what_o be_v say_v in_o job_n 11.13_o 14_o 15._o if_o thou_o prepare_v thy_o heart_n and_o stretch_v out_o thy_o hand_n towards_o he_o if_o iniquity_n be_v in_o thy_o hand_n put_v it_o far_o away_o and_o let_v not_o wickedness_n dwell_v in_o thy_o tabernacle_n for_o then_o shall_v thou_o lift_v up_o thy_o face_n without_o spot_n etc._n etc._n when_o you_o come_v to_o stretch_v out_o your_o hand_n towards_o god_n in_o prayer_n or_o when_o you_o any_o ordinance_n in_o any_o know_a sin_n that_o you_o do_v allow_v yourselves_o in_o for_o if_o you_o do_v you_o can_v perform_v those_o duty_n in_o faith_n and_o so_o they_o can_v be_v please_v unto_o god_n therefore_o be_v sure_a that_o you_o put_v away_o all_o evil_n from_o you_o as_o now_o for_o example_n to_o show_v you_o the_o application_n of_o this_o rule_n that_o you_o may_v know_v how_o to_o make_v use_n of_o it_o for_o every_o duty_n suppose_v now_o you_o go_v to_o prayer_n if_o you_o will_v pray_v in_o faith_n so_o as_o to_o please_v god_n you_o must_v not_o allow_v yourselves_o in_o any_o know_a sin_n no_o say_v david_n in_o psal_n 66.18_o if_o i_o regard_v iniquity_n in_o my_o heart_n the_o lord_n will_v not_o hear_v i_o i_o can_v make_v a_o prayer_n in_o faith_n if_o you_o have_v make_v a_o thousand_o prayer_n though_o you_o be_v a_o believer_n in_o the_o main_a yet_o all_o those_o prayer_n that_o you_o have_v put_v up_o in_o such_o a_o way_n with_o the_o guilt_n of_o any_o know_a sin_n upon_o you_o that_o you_o allow_v yourself_o in_o and_o go_v on_o in_o your_o prayer_n have_v not_o be_v put_v up_o in_o faith_n and_o so_o god_n will_v not_o regard_v they_o therefore_o be_v sure_a of_o that_o when_o you_o come_v to_o pray_v see_v that_o you_o do_v not_o allow_v yourself_o in_o any_o know_a sin_n so_o if_o you_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n if_o you_o will_v hear_v in_o faith_n so_o as_o to_o please_v god_n in_o it_o you_o must_v put_v away_o all_o evil_a out_o of_o your_o hand_n in_o jam_fw-la 1.21_o say_v the_o apostle_n there_o lay_v aside_o all_o filthiness_n and_o superfluity_n of_o naughtiness_n and_o receive_v with_o meekness_n the_o engraft_a word_n which_o be_v able_a to_o save_v your_o soul_n do_v you_o desire_v to_o unworthy_o eat_v and_o drink_v damnation_n to_o himself_o who_o do_v he_o speak_v to_o there_o he_o write_v to_o believer_n believer_n than_o may_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o how_o come_v a_o soul_n then_o to_o eat_v and_o drink_v worthy_o to_o partake_v worthy_o of_o this_o ordinance_n true_o by_o the_o act_n and_o exercise_v of_o faith_n for_o though_o he_o have_v the_o habit_n of_o unworthy_o and_o mark_v how_o the_o apostle_n go_v on_o say_v he_o it_o be_v requisite_a that_o those_o that_o partake_v at_o the_o lord_n table_n that_o they_o shall_v examine_v themselves_o let_v in_o this_o ordinance_n and_o therefore_o this_o duty_n of_o examination_n of_o a_o man_n self_n do_v imply_v that_o there_o must_v be_v a_o actuate_a and_o exercise_v of_o faith_n in_o the_o we_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o and_o so_o do_v not_o please_v god_n therefore_o there_o be_v require_v the_o exercise_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o partake_n of_o this_o ordinance_n i_o may_v add_v further_o still_o that_o the_o blessing_n and_o benefit_n that_o be_v hold_v forth_o and_o convey_v by_o this_o ordinance_n be_v all_o spiritual_a blessing_n and_o therefore_o they_o must_v be_v partake_v of_o by_o the_o exercise_n of_o our_o spiritual_a sense_n it_o be_v not_o for_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n to_o come_v and_o take_v the_o bread_n and_o wine_n and_o savour_v it_o by_o the_o exercise_n of_o his_o bodily_a sense_n of_o taste_v no_o but_o there_o must_v be_v the_o spiritual_a sense_n exercise_v so_o as_o to_o partake_v of_o the_o spiritual_a blessing_n that_o be_v hold_v forth_o and_o convey_v by_o it_o well_o then_o it_o be_v grant_v now_o that_o it_o be_v requisite_a that_o there_o must_v be_v not_o only_o the_o grace_n of_o faith_n or_o the_o habit_n of_o faith_n but_o there_o must_v be_v the_o actual_a exercise_v of_o faith_n in_o the_o partake_n of_o this_o ordinance_n or_o else_o we_o can_v please_v god_n quest_n well_o then_o the_o great_a question_n be_v
