of_o it_o and_o even_o in_o that_o infirmity_n reap_v and_o receive_v singular_a comfort_n though_o not_o in_o the_o weakness_n itself_o yet_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o object_n that_o that_o weak_a instrument_n lay_v assure_v hold_n of_o and_o apply_v to_o itself_o 11_o they_o have_v a_o other_o argument_n which_o they_o do_v not_o only_o frame_v and_o fashion_n but_o press_v &_o urge_v right_a of_o creation_n and_o by_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o creator_n yield_v thereunto_o and_o this_o be_v it_o that_o the_o prophet_n teach_v psal_n 104._o saying_n all_o thing_n wait_v upon_o with_o ease_n also_o change_v the_o natural_a course_n of_o all_o his_o creature_n general_o so_o can_v he_o as_o he_o will_v and_o by_o such_o powerful_a instrument_n as_o he_o have_v appoint_v thereto_o alter_v and_o change_v the_o vitiate_v and_o corrupt_v heart_n of_o man_n purge_v it_o so_o by_o faith_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v free_a from_o the_o power_n of_o iniquity_n and_o sanctify_v in_o the_o power_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o it_o and_o special_o also_o when_o it_o be_v egg_v forward_o with_o satan_n malice_n from_o evil_a to_o worse_o yet_o that_o hinder_v not_o but_o by_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o be_v the_o power_n of_o god_n to_o salvation_n to_o every_o one_o that_o believe_v and_o by_o many_o other_o mean_n and_o help_n as_o particular_o the_o gracious_a work_n of_o his_o bless_a spirit_n this_o work_n of_o change_v and_o alter_v our_o nature_n not_o only_o may_v but_o as_o we_o see_v by_o former_a and_o daily_a experience_n be_v bring_v to_o pass_v for_o as_o nothing_o can_v hinder_v he_o but_o further_o he_o rather_o when_o he_o command_v light_a to_o shine_v out_o of_o darkness_n so_o nothing_o now_o can_v stop_v his_o work_n but_o shall_v further_o it_o rather_o in_o change_v that_o curse_a and_o corrupt_a nature_n of_o we_o so_o that_o though_o this_o be_v true_a that_o by_o force_n and_o power_n of_o nature_n they_o can_v be_v remoove_v or_o change_v yet_o that_o let_v not_o but_o that_o this_o also_o may_v be_v true_a that_o by_o god_n word_n outward_o and_o by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n inward_o accompany_v &_o make_v the_o same_o fruitful_a they_o may_v in_o they_o that_o believe_v by_o little_a and_o little_a not_o only_o be_v alter_v and_o change_v but_o at_o the_o last_o be_v utter_o change_v which_o be_v more_o and_o as_o for_o the_o minor_a or_o assumption_n we_o say_v that_o in_o this_o sense_n and_o after_o this_o sort_n namely_o that_o not_o as_o nature_n be_v first_o create_v of_o god_n for_o so_o it_o can_v not_o choose_v but_o be_v as_o he_o be_v

god_n who_o not_o only_o in_o his_o own_o nature_n be_v always_o like_a unto_o himself_o free_a from_o the_o least_o shadow_n or_o show_v of_o turn_v that_o may_v be_v but_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o yet_o this_o i_o think_v we_o may_v say_v of_o it_o namely_o that_o we_o must_v needs_o understand_v it_o either_o of_o man_n that_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n word_n and_o unbeliever_n or_o else_o of_o his_o love_n and_o hatred_n towards_o such_o as_o of_o who_o faith_n we_o doubt_v not_o for_o between_o these_o two_o there_o be_v no_o mean_a neither_o be_v there_o any_o other_o sort_n of_o people_n in_o the_o world_n to_o refer_v it_o to_o the_o incredulous_a &_o to_o understand_v it_o of_o they_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n because_o he_o that_o can_v lie_v have_v tell_v we_o he_o that_o believe_v not_o be_v conden_v already_o because_o he_o believe_v not_o in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o only_a son_n of_o god_n &_o since_o he_o have_v give_v the_o judgement_n we_o judge_v not_o according_a to_o ourselves_o but_o according_a to_o his_o truth_n that_o can_v err_v and_o beside_o he_o that_o beleve_v not_o the_o gospel_n as_o he_o know_v not_o god_n himself_o with_o effect_n and_o fruit_n so_o he_o know_v not_o neither_o for_o himself_o nor_o for_o other_o those_o who_o god_n love_v or_o hate_v or_o of_o what_o force_n his_o love_n and_o hatred_n be_v we_o must_v therefore_o understand_v of_o the_o faithful_a &_o believer_n who_o though_o they_o can_v judge_v of_o other_o man_n special_o by_o their_o outward_a estate_n of_o which_o it_o seem_v solomon_n speak_v here_o whether_o god_n love_v any_o man_n or_o hate_v he_o yet_o concern_v himself_o or_o for_o god_n love_n or_o hatred_n towards_o he_o he_o can_v either_o be_v ignorant_a or_o doubtful_a of_o it_o because_o he_o know_v and_o feel_v the_o love_n of_o god_n towards_o he_o as_o a_o adopt_a child_n and_o that_o by_o better_a proof_n and_o pledge_n then_o outward_a mercy_n as_o we_o may_v perceive_v not_o only_o by_o the_o 7._o verse_n of_o this_o chapter_n where_o he_o say_v go_v eat_v thy_o bread_n with_o joy_n etc._n etc._n for_o god_n now_o accept_v thy_o work_n but_o also_o by_o this_o of_o john_n in_o his_o first_o epistle_n four_o chapter_n herein_o be_v the_o love_n of_o god_n make_v manifest_a among_o we_o because_o god_n send_v that_o his_o only_o beget_v son_n into_o this_o world_n that_o we_o may_v live_v through_o he_o and_o sundry_a such_o other_o place_n and_o therefore_o this_o be_v a_o non_fw-la sequitur_fw-la as_o we_o say_v in_o the_o school_n or_o a_o the_o end_n of_o either_o be_v alike_o therefore_o we_o can_v by_o no_o other_o mean_n discern_v the_o difference_n it_o be_v false_a and_o indeed_o will_v not_o hold_v or_o follow_v by_o all_o these_o thing_n than_o we_o may_v perceive_v that_o howesoever_o we_o understand_v this_o place_n of_o the_o love_n or_o hatred_n of_o god_n towards_o man_n that_o yet_o it_o will_v make_v nothing_o for_o the_o papist_n to_o establish_v their_o doctrine_n of_o doubt_v touch_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o free_a pardon_n and_o full_a forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n that_o we_o may_v take_v no_o advantage_n of_o this_o that_o papist_n affirm_v that_o such_o as_o offend_v against_o their_o conscience_n do_v well_o enough_o know_v that_o they_o be_v under_o god_n hatred_n and_o god_n be_v angry_a with_o they_o do_v by_o this_o doctrine_n across_o their_o own_o sense_n and_o interpretation_n and_o again_o it_o that_o be_v true_a in_o offend_v party_n why_o shall_v they_o enjoin_v such_o as_o be_v turn_v to_o god_n and_o do_v unfeigned_o repent_v they_o of_o their_o sin_n to_o doubt_v of_o the_o grace_n and_o love_n of_o god_n towards_o they_o but_o let_v we_o return_v and_o deliver_v the_o true_a and_o natural_a meaning_n and_o see_v whether_o that_o will_v help_v any_o whit_n at_o all_o i_o know_v that_o both_o jew_n and_o christian_a expositor_n also_o do_v give_v diverse_a sense_n of_o this_o one_o place_n but_o to_o i_o this_o follow_v seem_v most_o right_a in_o this_o chapter_n as_o i_o take_v it_o he_o deal_v with_o such_o a_o sort_n or_o kind_n of_o administration_n or_o order_n of_o thing_n in_o this_o world_n as_o be_v beyond_o man_n reach_n &_o he_o set_v it_o out_o by_o sundry_a particular_n the_o first_o whereof_o be_v contain_v in_o this_o first_o verse_n and_o some_o of_o the_o verse_n follow_v and_o indeed_o respect_v man_n person_n and_o the_o several_a event_n and_o success_n that_o follow_v they_o and_o yet_o in_o this_o first_o verse_n he_o do_v not_o only_o declare_v the_o judgement_n of_o flesh_n &_o blood_n concern_v the_o person_n themselves_o but_o also_o express_v what_o he_o himself_o conceive_v of_o it_o according_a to_o truth_n and_o godliness_n this_o be_v it_o then_o that_o he_o mean_v that_o have_v set_v his_o heart_n not_o only_o to_o search_v into_o these_o thing_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o he_o can_v by_o

together_o by_o joint_n and_o band_n increase_v with_o the_o increase_n of_o god_n last_o in_o as_o these_o sin_n do_v not_o reign_v in_o i_o or_o over_o rule_n by_o that_o but_o that_o they_o be_v master_v and_o beat_v down_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n plentiful_o shed_v abroad_o in_o into_o my_o heart_n and_o powerful_o prevail_v against_o my_o corruption_n one_o while_n while_o it_o do_v in_o a_o notable_a measure_n subdue_v iniquity_n present_a in_o i_o and_o another_o while_n while_o after_o sin_n commit_v it_o raise_v i_o up_o to_o repentance_n and_o amendment_n so_o that_o i_o lie_v not_o sleep_v and_o snort_v in_o sin_n as_o the_o wicked_a but_o these_o sin_n be_v through_o the_o mighty_a operation_n and_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a chost_n daily_o by_o little_a life_n that_o be_v to_o be_v reveal_v 4_o and_o therefore_o the_o assault_n that_o he_o make_v against_o we_o be_v by_o a_o argument_n frame_v thus_o innumerable_a man_n and_o woman_n perish_v and_o be_v condemn_v as_o who_o christ_n and_o righteousness_n do_v no_o whit_n at_o all_o profit_n but_o thou_o be_v of_o that_o number_n as_o appear_v by_o this_o because_o thou_o be_v no_o whit_n better_o than_o they_o that_o worse_v rather_o therefore_o thou_o be_v damn_v hereunto_o i_o answer_v that_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o proposition_n i_o willing_o consent_v unto_o namely_o that_o sound_a judgement_n appertain_v but_o affirm_v false_o that_o which_o he_o can_v never_o prove_v nay_o the_o contrary_a whereof_o i_o be_o able_a to_o show_v and_o that_o not_o only_o by_o my_o own_o judgement_n which_o happy_o may_v be_v suspect_v in_o my_o own_o cause_n and_o yet_o speak_v the_o truth_n i_o see_v no_o reason_n why_o i_o shall_v not_o as_o well_o be_v believe_v for_o myself_o as_o satan_n against_o i_o but_o even_o from_o the_o testimony_n and_o witness_n of_o god_n holy_a word_n i_o know_v i_o be_o faithful_a and_o i_o be_o confirm_v in_o the_o truth_n and_o certainty_n of_o the_o persuasion_n because_o i_o do_v not_o in_o a_o evil_a or_o idle_a opinion_n but_o in_o true_a and_o certain_a faith_n lie_v hold_v of_o christ_n and_o stay_v and_o settle_v myself_o whole_o and_o only_o upon_o he_o this_o no_o heathen_a idolater_n can_v do_v because_o he_o be_v not_o only_o without_o christ_n but_o without_o god_n in_o the_o world_n this_o no_n mahometist_n or_o jew_n can_v perform_v because_o they_o deny_v he_o and_o defy_v he_o from_o their_o heart_n this_o no_v counterfeit_v or_o corrupt_a christian_n can_v accomplish_v for_o the_o false_a christian_n as_o papist_n join_v their_o work_n at_o the_o least_o with_o he_o and_o the_o carnal_a professor_n in_o the_o corrupt_a course_n of_o his_o conversation_n deny_v his_o power_n to_o mortification_n and_o sanctification_n therefore_o i_o separate_v from_o all_o and_o everye_o one_o of_o they_o in_o strength_n of_o persuasion_n in_o particular_a application_n and_o the_o fruit_n of_o faith_n and_o bless_a obedience_n can_v perish_v but_o may_v truelye_o and_o effectual_o say_v that_o christ_n jesus_n dwell_v in_o my_o heart_n and_o make_v i_o fruitful_a to_o good_a work_n and_o i_o again_o be_v thereby_o in_o he_o there_o be_v no_o condemnation_n to_o i_o nor_o any_o such_o yea_o i_o be_o thorough_o and_o certain_o persuade_v that_o neither_o life_n nor_o death_n height_n nor_o breadth_n most_o or_o more_o the_o wicked_a can_v discern_v of_o they_o of_o another_o no_o not_o one_o of_o they_o well_o of_o their_o heart_n as_o we_o see_v even_o particular_o by_o this_o that_o many_o time_n they_o be_v not_o only_o blind_v but_o senseless_a also_o and_o yet_o a_o man_n will_v think_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v as_o well_o able_a either_o to_o know_v the_o height_n and_o heinousness_n of_o one_o another_o corruption_n or_o their_o own_o as_o satan_n shall_v be_v acquaint_v with_o they_o and_o if_o satan_n can_v tell_v whether_o i_o be_v worse_o than_o they_o he_o less_o know_v whether_o i_o be_v in_o any_o measure_n of_o mercy_n better_o than_o they_o for_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o fullness_n of_o his_o own_o corruption_n he_o can_v much_o better_o discern_v of_o evil_a than_o any_o whit_n at_o all_o of_o good_a by_o reason_n of_o his_o adversnesse_n and_o waye-wardnesse_n and_o unto_o wardness_n thereto_o but_o be_v it_o as_o it_o may_v be_v we_o will_v yield_v he_o the_o hard_a that_o i_o be_o such_o a_o one_o to_o wit_n by_o nature_n yet_o be_o i_o another_o man_n by_o grace_n and_o adoption_n which_o vari_v the_o state_n and_o though_o i_o be_v in_o myself_o &_o of_o myself_o no_o whit_n better_o than_o other_o nay_o i_o will_v say_v more_o worse_a than_o other_o if_o god_n be_v please_v to_o account_v otherwise_o of_o i_o what_o be_v that_o to_o satan_n since_o god_n will_v have_v mercy_n upon_o whosoever_o he_o will_v have_v mercy_n &_o will_v cause_v i_o and_o other_o to_o feel_v and_o find_v that_o true_a in_o ourselves_o that_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o the_o general_a doctrine_n of_o the_o word_n where_o sin_n have_v abound_v there_o grace_n have_v over_o abound_v and_o free_o confess_v of_o himself_o that_o god_n have_v mercy_n on_o he_o the_o chief_a of_o all_o sinner_n and_o therefore_o i_o be_o so_o far_o of_o from_o despair_n in_o myself_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o in_o that_o respect_n i_o may_v cover_v my_o face_n with_o shame_n that_o i_o may_v rather_o great_o comfort_v myself_o because_o in_o this_o life_n god_n favour_n and_o good_a will_n do_v not_o in_o any_o thing_n so_o plain_o appear_v as_o in_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o my_o sin_n but_o satan_n will_v yet_o again_o press_v and_o urge_v this_o further_a thus_o the_o faithful_a very_o be_v not_o damn_v but_o save_v by_o christ_n but_o thou_o be_v not_o faithful_a or_o have_v not_o faith_n therefore_o thou_o can_v not_o be_v save_v by_o christ_n but_o must_v notwithstanding_o for_o the_o want_n of_o thy_o faith_n remain_v still_o under_o condemnation_n for_o answer_v whereto_o i_o say_v still_o notwithstanding_o all_o thy_o opposition_n satan_n that_o i_o have_v faith_n and_o do_v believe_v and_o if_o thou_o will_v ask_v how_o i_o know_v it_o or_o can_v be_v assure_v of_o it_o i_o will_v show_v thou_o christ_n our_o saviour_n tell_v we_o that_o we_o shall_v know_v the_o tree_n by_o the_o fruit_n from_o the_o effect_n
therefore_o or_o fruit_n of_o my_o faith_n will_v i_o gather_v this_o truth_n against_o thou_o to_o the_o stay_n &_o uphold_v of_o my_o own_o heart_n and_o first_o because_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o god_n and_o the_o infallible_a testimony_n that_o it_o yield_v unto_o my_o heart_n be_v a_o principal_o prop_n and_o stay_n unto_o i_o i_o tell_v thou_o satan_n that_o even_o that_o shall_v testify_v unto_o my_o spirit_n that_o i_o be_o god_n child_n and_o dare_v thereupon_o without_o fear_n or_o tremble_a call_v upon_o he_o and_o say_v abba_n o_o father_n by_o which_o i_o perceive_v i_o do_v believe_v for_o otherwise_o how_o can_v i_o call_v upon_o he_o in_o who_o i_o believe_v not_o and_o assure_o know_v that_o i_o have_v faith_n because_o i_o stay_v myself_o whole_o and_o only_o upon_o he_o say_v unto_o he_o in_o some_o sort_n and_o sense_n as_o the_o prophet_n david_n say_v lord_n who_o have_v i_o in_o heaven_n but_o thou_o and_o in_o earth_n i_o desire_v none_o with_o thou_o and_o lest_o satan_n shall_v think_v i_o do_v this_o without_o warrant_n or_o reason_n i_o will_v not_o fear_v or_o be_v ashamed_a to_o set_v down_o my_o ground_n out_o of_o the_o word_n how_o comfortable_a be_v this_o say_n of_o the_o apostle_n roman_n 8._o we_o have_v not_o receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n to_o fear_v again_o but_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n whereby_o we_o cry_v as_o with_o boldness_n so_o with_o earnestness_n father_n father_n the_o same_o spirit_n witness_v with_o our_o spirit_n that_o we_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n if_o child_n than_o heir_n also_o etc._n etc._n to_o the_o same_o end_n tend_v that_o of_o 1._o cor._n 2._o where_o he_o say_v we_o have_v receive_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o world_n but_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v of_o god_n that_o by_o it_o we_o may_v know_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v give_v unto_o we_o of_o god_n and_o though_o this_o be_v sufficient_a and_o indeed_o great_a than_o all_o exception_n yet_o have_v we_o beside_o the_o powerful_a work_n of_o the_o same_o spirit_n frame_v we_o and_o fashion_v we_o to_o sound_v conversion_n before_o god_n and_o to_o the_o yield_a orbr_v out_o of_o the_o sincere_a fruit_n of_o faith_n that_o be_v to_o say_v good_a work_n which_o can_v but_o assure_v i_o of_o my_o salvation_n and_o of_o god_n grace_n and_o confirm_v i_o in_o the_o certain_a hope_n of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o saint_n peter_n provoke_v unto_o when_o he_o say_v brethren_n g_o we_o diligence_n by_o good_a work_n to_o make_v your_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a for_o if_o you_o do_v these_o thing_n you_o shall_v never_o fall_v because_o by_o this_o mean_v a_o entry_n shall_v be_v minister_v unto_o you_o abundant_o into_o the_o everlasting_a kingdom_n of_o our_o lord_n &_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n and_o of_o this_o truth_n we_o have_v further_o this_o double_a reason_n if_o that_o which_o be_v from_o ourselves_o as_o for_o example_n our_o sin_n may_v just_o shall_v we_o that_o carry_v god_n heavenly_a treasure_n in_o earthen_a vessel_n conceive_v hope_n of_o profit_v by_o they_o in_o ourselves_o or_o of_o do_v good_a with_o they_o unto_o other_o but_o may_v be_v idle_a in_o we_o no_o very_o satan_n when_o he_o possess_v man_n will_v not_o suffer_v they_o to_o be_v idle_a much_o less_o jesus_n christ_n but_o provoke_v they_o still_o to_o honest_a labour_n and_o good_a work_n for_o by_o his_o spiritual_a power_n he_o manife_v his_o own_o strength_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o our_o manifold_a weakness_n now_o if_o that_o be_v true_a than_o this_o ensue_v thereupon_o that_o i_o be_o christ_n and_o christ_n be_v i_o as_o the_o church_n &_o faithful_a soul_n sing_v in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o canticle_n yea_o he_o himself_o with_o all_o his_o grace_n and_o merit_n whatsoever_o so_o that_o he_o which_o feel_v and_o find_v these_o effect_n in_o himself_o can_v not_o but_o must_v of_o necessity_n infer_v thereupon_o that_o he_o have_v faith_n and_o that_o therefore_o he_o have_v christ_n in_o he_o in_o this_o life_n make_v he_o fruitful_a unto_o all_o good_a work_n and_o seal_v up_o unto_o he_o &_o in_o he_o salvation_n &_o everlasting_a rare_o appear_v or_o be_v see_v what_o then_o satan_n grant_v that_o my_o faith_n and_o good_a work_n be_v faint_a and_o few_o in_o i_o will_v thou_o infer_v that_o therefore_o i_o have_v none_o that_o be_v against_o all_o reason_n and_o religion_n in_o reason_n he_o that_o have_v but_o a_o sick_a pine_a or_o languish_v life_n live_v still_o and_o in_o hope_n of_o the_o better_n of_o his_o estate_n either_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o this_o world_n if_o god_n will_v or_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v especial_o and_o why_o shall_v not_o this_o in_o measure_n and_o manner_n be_v true_a as_o in_o respect_n of_o our_o spiritual_a life_n here_o in_o religion_n we_o know_v that_o god_n accept_v both_o the_o whole_a church_n &_o the_o several_a member_n of_o it_o according_a to_o that_o they_o have_v and_o not_o according_a to_o that_o they_o have_v not_o provide_v always_o that_o that_o which_o they_o have_v they_o have_v it_o from_o he_o or_o else_o how_o fellowship_n of_o the_o brethren_n and_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o church_n as_o the_o manner_n of_o sin_n be_v but_o n_o holy_a wisdom_n and_o power_n from_o above_o to_o put_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o good_a and_o evil_a and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o our_o persuasion_n but_o in_o our_o practice_n not_o forsake_v the_o good_a of_o our_o god_n for_o some_o evil_n or_o corruption_n of_o man_n adjoin_v therewithal_o nor_o yet_o for_o the_o good_n sake_n justify_v or_o approve_v the_o evil_a and_o if_o this_o be_v not_o sufficient_a yet_o we_o have_v further_a prop_n to_o our_o faith_n here_o namely_o first_o that_o though_o our_o faith_n be_v weak_a and_o faint_a yet_o be_v it_o true_a and_o sound_a for_o even_o that_o faith_n which_o be_v infirm_a and_o weak_a may_v yet_o notwitstanding_n be_v true_a &_o right_a the_o reason_n be_v because_o that_o not_o weak_a faith_n and_o true_a faith_n be_v opposite_a but_o weak_a faith_n and_o no_o faith_n and_o this_o we_o may_v see_v also_o by_o the_o worthy_a speech_n of_o the_o father_n of_o the_o sick_a child_n in_o the_o gospel_n lord_n i_o believe_v but_o help_v thou_o my_o unbelief_n this_o weakness_n &_o imperfection_n our_o faith_n not_o come_v from_o itself_o nor_o be_v in_o itself_o as_o of_o itself_o for_o so_o it_o be_v a_o excellent_a and_o a_o absolute_a work_n of_o god_n but_o as_o it_o be_v intermingle_v with_o the_o remainder_n of_o our_o unbelieve_a heart_n which_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o faintness_n and_o weakness_n of_o it_o may_v no_o less_o effectual_o

in_o this_o same_o dangerous_a combat_n whereof_o also_o as_o seem_v to_o i_o there_o be_v great_a reason_n for_o if_o our_o sin_n which_o be_v from_o satan_n malice_n or_o our_o own_o corruption_n do_v grieve_v we_o &_o possess_v our_o heart_n with_o fear_n why_o shall_v not_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o obedience_n which_o be_v from_o god_n yield_v we_o comfort_v &_o fill_v our_o heart_n with_o hope_n not_o because_o they_o be_v in_o we_o for_o so_o we_o do_v many_o time_n weaken_v they_o at_o the_o jest_n if_o not_o impair_v or_o hurt_v they_o but_o as_o they_o be_v in_o we_o from_o god_n who_o we_o be_v sure_o will_v accept_v of_o his_o own_o good_a work_n and_o grace_n vouchsafe_v unto_o us._n last_o i_o say_v that_o as_o we_o abstain_v not_o from_o meat_n and_o drink_v and_o other_o necessary_a aide_n of_o natural_a life_n because_o we_o know_v that_o the_o term_n and_o time_n of_o the_o say_a life_n be_v limit_v by_o god_n so_o there_o be_v no_o man_n unless_o he_o the_o law_n or_o of_o the_o dignity_n of_o our_o work_n but_o be_v from_o christ_n absolute_a obedience_n &_o the_o holy_a gospel_n which_o every_o where_n teach_v that_o christ_n be_v therefore_o send_v and_o come_v into_o the_o world_n that_o he_o may_v save_v sinner_n and_o redeem_v we_o from_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n may_v make_v we_o righteouse_a through_o faith_n in_o he_o the_o mayor_n or_o proposition_n separate_v as_o we_o see_v it_o be_v from_o christ_n and_o understand_v as_o it_o must_v be_v and_o may_v appear_v by_o the_o minor_a not_o of_o christ_n but_o of_o our_o obedience_n can_v not_o be_v true_a beside_o since_o the_o word_n general_o and_o more_o particular_o the_o gospel_n a_o special_a part_n of_o it_o every_o where_o instruct_v we_o not_o to_o respect_v our_o own_o dignity_n or_o worthiness_n which_o indeed_o be_v none_o but_o all_o manner_n of_o unworthines_n nor_o yet_o to_o behold_v our_o own_o unworthiness_n otherwise_o then_o to_o humble_v we_o before_o god_n and_o in_o ourselves_o and_o to_o make_v we_o to_o run_v unto_o christ_n and_o to_o his_o righteousness_n more_o earnest_o &_o speedy_o then_o we_o do_v but_o send_v we_o unto_o christ_n and_o to_o his_o merit_n and_o worthiness_n that_o so_o for_o his_o sake_n we_o may_v be_v reconcile_v unto_o god_n that_o be_v to_o say_v both_o justify_v and_o sanctify_v before_o he_o it_o may_v discover_v unto_o we_o a_o mean_a a_o manner_n yea_o and_o matter_n of_o justification_n that_o in_o the_o law_n can_v not_o be_v find_v out_o and_o also_o teach_v we_o how_o to_o appropriate_v and_o apply_v the_o same_o unto_o our_o own_o heart_n last_o concern_v the_o minor_a we_o answer_v and_o say_v that_o no_o man_n have_v in_o himself_o as_o of_o himself_o that_o perfect_a and_o obedience_n of_o the_o law_n that_o they_o speak_v of_o howbeit_o we_o be_v assure_v that_o all_o that_o have_v christ_n have_v it_o because_o they_o do_v by_o faith_n lie_v hold_v of_o christ_n and_o his_o perfect_a obedience_n the_o want_n or_o lack_v of_o then_o own_o in_o themselves_o be_v so_o far_o of_o from_o hinder_v christ_n righteousness_n to_o they_o and_o in_o they_o that_o it_o rather_o further_v they_o thereto_o for_o he_o that_o be_v fill_v with_o his_o own_o can_v have_v no_o part_n of_o christ_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o he_o that_o be_v full_a though_o it_o be_v but_o of_o airy_a and_o windy_a matter_n or_o as_o we_o say_v bad_a repletion_n can_v hardly_o or_o not_o at_o all_o till_o he_o be_v purge_v of_o that_o admit_v any_o more_o but_o also_o because_o there_o be_v such_o a_o flat_a opposition_n between_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o man_n that_o they_o can_v both_o be_v at_o one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o time_n in_o one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o subject_n but_o the_o have_v of_o the_o one_o be_v the_o privation_n of_o the_o other_o as_o the_o apostle_n show_v in_o many_o place_n of_o his_o writing_n and_o namely_o rom._n 10._o verse_n 3._o and_o also_o rom._n 11._o verse_n 5.6_o psal_n 3.6_o and_o this_o i_o think_v may_v satisfy_v any_o reasonable_a man_n yea_o stop_n his_o mouth_n from_o bark_v or_o bellow_v against_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n howbeit_o our_o adversary_n yet_o press_v this_o point_n further_o and_o object_n say_v christ_n say_v in_o the_o gospel_n if_o any_o man_n love_v i_o he_o will_v keep_v my_o commandment_n or_o say_n or_o word_n but_o no_o man_n keep_v his_o word_n therefore_o say_v they_o no_o man_n know_v whether_o god_n love_v he_o yea_o or_o no._n first_o for_o the_o form_n of_o the_o syllogysmo_n and_o then_o for_o the_o matter_n in_o the_o conclusion_n there_o be_v more_o then_o be_v in_o the_o promise_n for_o whereas_o the_o mayor_n teach_v we_o that_o obedience_n to_o christ_n word_n be_v a_o sign_n unto_o other_o and_o a_o pledge_n unto_o ourselves_o of_o some_o love_n that_o god_n have_v wrought_v in_o our_o heart_n towards_o he_o the_o conclusion_n turn_v it_o up_o side_n down_o and_o say_v no_o man_n can_v know_v whether_o god_n love_v he_o yea_o or_o no_o as_o though_o our_o love_n &_o god_n love_n be_v all_o one_o or_o as_o though_o god_n love_v not_o many_o i_o will_v not_o say_v unto_o eternal_a life_n for_o that_o love_n only_o belong_v to_o the_o elect_a but_o in_o many_o outward_a respect_n from_o which_o also_o as_o it_o shall_v seem_v christ_n himself_o math._n 5._o infer_v this_o doctrine_n love_v they_o that_o hate_v you_o etc._n etc._n and_o make_v this_o comfortable_a use_n of_o it_o that_o you_o may_v be_v the_o child_n of_o your_o heavenly_a father_n who_o can_v set_v his_o sun_n to_o shine_v &_o his_o rain_n to_o rain_v upon_o the_o just_a and_o unjust_a now_o to_o the_o matter_n all_o the_o doubt_n rest_v in_o the_o true_a and_o natural_a meaning_n of_o this_o phrase_n keep_v my_o word_n and_o say_n that_o our_o saviour_n shall_v mean_v thereby_o absolute_a obedience_n and_o performance_n thereof_o there_o be_v no_o likelihood_n for_o he_o that_o know_v the_o heart_n of_o all_o know_v also_o that_o even_o in_o the_o best_a there_o be_v great_a defect_n and_o want_n and_o to_o have_v deliver_v such_o a_o speech_n i_o mean_v in_o that_o sense_n and_o meaning_n have_v be_v by_o his_o own_o word_n to_o have_v cross_v and_o thuart_v his_o own_o knowledge_n and_o to_o have_v speak_v more_o indeed_o then_o truth_n be_v why_o they_o what_o be_v it_o that_o he_o will_v signify_v and_o set_v out_o unto_o we_o thereby_o sure_o this_o much_o that_o the_o care_n and_o conscience_n that_o the_o faithful_a have_v to_o obey_v his_o will_n and_o these_o good_a beginning_n and_o proceed_n that_o they_o have_v make_v therein_o by_o his_o spirit_n he_o will_v accept_v they_o as_o absolute_a and_o cover_v with_o the_o fullness_n of_o righteousness_n and_o obedience_n that_o be_v and_o be_v in_o himself_o and_o so_o present_v they_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n neither_o do_v that_o dislike_n i_o that_o one_o answer_v hereto_o namely_o that_o this_o be_v a_o sentence_n or_o say_n of_o the_o gospel_n must_v not_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o perfect_a fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n part_n and_o piece_n of_o the_o voice_n of_o the_o gospel_n these_o term_n to_o keep_v christ_n saying_n or_o word_n signify_v nothing_o else_o but_o by_o faith_n to_o embrace_v and_o to_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n and_o purity_n of_o that_o doctrine_n that_o in_o the_o gospel_n be_v commend_v unto_o we_o concern_v christ_n and_o as_o sound_a member_n of_o the_o church_n to_o profess_v it_o open_o and_o as_o faithful_a
minister_n to_o publish_v it_o &_o spread_v it_o abroad_o and_o all_o as_o man_n mindful_a of_o and_o careful_a for_o the_o glory_n of_o our_o god_n to_o addorne_v and_o beautify_v it_o and_o to_o do_v what_o we_o can_v in_o holy_a life_n to_o make_v it_o honourable_a and_o so_o be_v it_o that_o christ_n say_v and_o mean_v also_o joh._n 17._o where_n speak_v of_o his_o apostle_n he_o affirm_v that_o they_o keep_v the_o word_n of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n and_o therefore_o also_o to_o such_o as_o after_o this_o manner_n embrace_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o profess_v it_o believe_v it_o and_o obey_v it_o in_o some_o measure_n be_v very_o large_a and_o excellent_a grace_n promise_v as_o justification_n sanctification_n and_o glorification_n etc._n etc._n not_o because_o imperfect_a work_n can_v merit_v or_o deserve_v any_o more_o at_o god_n hand_n then_o gross_a corruption_n for_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o absolute_a justice_n no_o imperfect_a thing_n can_v please_v he_o but_o because_o that_o god_n through_o his_o mercy_n and_o christ_n obedience_n be_v please_v as_o to_o forgive_v and_o forget_v our_o defect_n so_o to_o crown_v his_o own_o grace_n in_o we_o and_o by_o these_o large_a promise_n and_o performance_n also_o to_o whet_v we_o unto_o perfection_n in_o this_o life_n though_o indeed_o we_o can_v never_o here_o attain_v thereto_o now_o the_o mayor_n be_v thus_o expound_v and_o these_o word_n to_o keep_v christ_n saying_n be_v take_v in_o this_o sense_n in_o the_o minor_a or_o assumption_n we_o do_v not_o deny_v the_o minor_a as_o untrue_a because_o christ_n say_v of_o his_o apostle_n john_n 17._o they_o have_v keep_v thy_o word_n and_o all_o that_o they_o have_v and_o do_v in_o sort_n as_o before_o be_v express_v embrace_n and_o hold_v fast_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n keep_v faith_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n as_o the_o scripture_n say_v may_v right_o be_v term_v in_o their_o measure_n to_o keep_v christ_n say_n though_o he_o will_v not_o or_o dare_v not_o affirm_v they_o do_v it_o so_o well_o and_o in_o such_o a_o large_a measure_n as_o the_o apostle_n do_v 7_o another_o argument_n they_o frame_v as_o follow_v he_o that_o by_o the_o gospel_n can_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v sufficient_a repentance_n for_o his_o sin_n he_o can_v be_v assure_v touch_v justification_n or_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n towards_o he_o or_o concern_v salvation_n for_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n require_v repentance_n of_o us._n but_o no_o man_n by_o the_o gospel_n can_v tell_v whether_o he_o have_v sufficient_a repentance_n yea_o or_o no_o therefore_o no_o man_n no_o not_o by_o the_o gospel_n know_v or_o can_v know_v concern_v god_n grace_n towards_o he_o &_o his_o own_o salvation_n there_o be_v many_o thing_n in_o the_o maior_fw-la proposition_n that_o have_v need_n of_o explanation_n first_o that_o word_n of_o sufficient_a repentance_n be_v not_o only_o ambiguous_a and_o doubtful_a but_o full_a of_o unsoundnesse_n as_o though_o forsooth_o our_o justification_n before_o god_n or_o reconciliation_n with_o he_o stand_v upon_o the_o dignity_n sufficiency_n and_o merit_n of_o our_o repentance_n that_o be_v of_o our_o contrition_n faith_n and_o new_a obedience_n whereas_o we_o know_v it_o depend_v not_o upon_o all_o or_o any_o of_o these_o thing_n but_o upon_o the_o absolute_a obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n which_o as_o it_o be_v sufficient_a indeed_o to_o take_v away_o all_o sin_n so_o it_o be_v much_o more_o powerful_a to_o supply_v the_o defect_n of_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n or_o as_o though_o again_o we_o can_v sufficient_o and_o enough_o sorrow_n for_o our_o sin_n whereas_o if_o we_o weigh_v not_o only_o all_o our_o sin_n but_o any_o of_o they_o in_o it_o own_o nature_n and_o according_a to_o the_o grievous_a effect_n it_o bring_v forth_o or_o the_o heavy_a judgement_n of_o god_n against_o we_o for_o the_o same_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o our_o conscience_n and_o in_o truth_n before_o god_n that_o though_o we_o will_v or_o can_v do_v nothing_o else_o all_o the_o day_n of_o our_o life_n but_o repent_v we_o of_o that_o one_o yet_o we_o can_v not_o sufficient_o perform_v it_o therefore_o or_o as_o though_o we_o have_v some_o sufficiency_n in_o ourselves_o to_o all_o or_o any_o good_a thing_n whereas_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o in_o plain_a &_o evident_a term_n that_o we_o be_v not_o sufficient_a of_o ourselves_o as_o of_o ourselves_o to_o think_v any_o thing_n much_o less_o sufficient_o to_o repent_v but_o that_o all_o our_o sufficiency_n be_v of_o god_n who_o work_v in_o we_o both_o the_o will_n and_o the_o deed_n according_a to_o his_o good_a pleasure_n secondlie_o whereas_o the_o mayor_n affirm_v that_o unless_o a_o man_n have_v sufficient_a repentance_n for_o his_o sin_n he_o can_v be_v assure_v of_o justification_n etc._n etc._n we_o answer_v that_o be_v false_a for_o though_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o that_o which_o be_v want_v in_o himself_o he_o can_v be_v assure_v yet_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o that_o which_o for_o he_o be_v supply_v by_o another_o and_o accept_v of_o he_o to_o who_o that_o supply_n be_v due_a he_o may_v conceive_v comfort_n and_o certainty_n also_o for_o even_o as_o when_o the_o debt_n that_o a_o man_n owe_v be_v satisfy_v by_o his_o brother_n &_o the_o party_n to_o who_o it_o be_v due_a acknowledge_v himself_o content_v and_o pay_v he_o that_o ought_v the_o debt_n need_v not_o doubt_n much_o less_o distrust_n so_o be_v the_o case_n between_o god_n and_o we_o through_o the_o death_n &_o obedience_n of_o christ_n his_o son_n &_o our_o elder_a brother_n for_o god_n confess_v contentment_n and_o acknowledge_v satisfaction_n when_o he_o say_v this_o be_v my_o wellbe_n love_v son_n in_o who_o i_o be_o well_o please_v &c_n &c_n and_o christ_n have_v pay_v the_o debt_n because_o he_o have_v put_v out_o the_o hand_n writing_n of_o ordinance_n that_o be_v against_o we_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o we_o he_o even_o take_v it_o out_o of_o the_o way_n and_o fasten_v it_o upon_o the_o cross_n and_o have_v spoil_v principality_n and_o power_n and_o have_v make_v a_o christ_n obedience_n or_o the_o absolutenes_n of_o god_n work_v in_o give_v he_o to_o the_o death_n for_o we_o all_o three_o this_o be_v faulty_a in_o the_o mayor_n that_o it_o make_v it_o a_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o office_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o certify_v man_n heart_n of_o repentance_n whereas_o the_o chief_a duty_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v to_o publish_v forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o by_o consequent_a eternal_a life_n also_o for_o where_o the_o first_o be_v the_o latter_a can_v choose_v but_o follow_v in_o the_o name_n and_o obedience_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o though_o we_o will_v not_o or_o can_v deny_v but_o that_o repentance_n be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o join_v with_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n yet_o be_v not_o therefore_o annex_v thereunto_o that_o in_o the_o worthiness_n or_o suffiencie_n of_o it_o we_o may_v merit_v assurance_n but_o that_o in_o the_o have_v of_o it_o it_o may_v pledge_v up_o in_o our_o heart_n the_o forgiveness_n of_o all_o our_o transgression_n and_o yet_o not_o as_o though_o it_o be_v of_o ourselves_o though_o it_o be_v in_o ourselves_o but_o as_o it_o be_v god_n work_n in_o we_o he_o give_v this_o glory_n to_o his_o own_o work_n to_o testify_v this_o favour_n unto_o our_o heart_n of_o reconciliation_n and_o peace_n indeed_o if_o repentance_n be_v of_o and_o from_o man_n it_o be_v deny_v because_o every_o where_o almost_o it_o be_v say_v repent_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n but_o he_o that_o require_v it_o for_o these_o end_n &_o purpose_n that_o these_o man_n imagine_v as_o exceed_o good_a but_o as_o after_o the_o fall_n of_o our_o first_o parent_n it_o be_v derive_v and_o covey_v over_o unto_o we_o that_o so_o to_o doubt_v of_o the_o grace_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n for_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n for_o the_o save_n of_o our_o soul_n etc._n etc._n be_v very_o natural_a indeed_o that_o be_v to_o say_v that_o in_o and_o through_o this_o depravation_n and_o corruption_n of_o that_o excellent_a nature_n which_o by_o creation_n be_v infuse_v into_o our_o first_o parent_n and_o in_o they_o to_o all_o their_o posterity_n have_v they_o continue_v therein_o because_o we_o be_v all_o in_o their_o loin_n to_o have_v be_v partaker_n of_o their_o excellent_a grace_n by_o creation_n as_o well_o as_o we_o be_v of_o their_o sin_n by_o transgression_n man_n do_v doubt_n of_o god_n his_o goodness_n etc._n etc._n and_o though_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o man_n natural_a or_o faculty_n or_o power_n that_o they_o have_v in_o they_o as_o of_o they_o we_o acknowledge_v it_o impossible_a to_o alter_v or_o change_v this_o doubt_v and_o distrustfulness_n yet_o by_o god_n to_o who_o all_o thing_n be_v possible_a and_o by_o his_o singular_a help_n aid_n that_o not_o only_o in_o the_o affection_n and_o thought_n of_o our_o heart_n to_o which_o we_o must_v refer_v doubt_v and_o distrustfulnes_n but_o even_o in_o the_o word_n of_o our_o mouth_n and_o work_n of_o our_o hand_n also_o and_o therefore_o not_o safe_a to_o follow_v the_o example_n of_o god_n saint_n either_o in_o inward_a or_o outward_a thing_n further_o than_o as_o they_o themselves_o be_v sanctify_v and_o walk_v in_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o word_n and_o tread_v in_o the_o holy_a step_n of_o god_n and_o this_o the_o apostle_n mean_v when_o he_o say_v ephes_n 5._o be_v you_o follower_n of_o god_n as_o dear_a child_n and_o walk_v in_o love_n even_o as_o christ_n have_v love_v we_o and_o in_o anolh_a place_n be_v you_o follower_n of_o i_o even_o as_o i_o be_o of_o christ_n first_o to_o the_o corinthian_n eleven_o by_o which_o we_o see_v that_o though_o the_o faithful_a fall_n into_o doubt_v yet_o they_o do_v it_o not_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o they_o have_v receive_v but_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o remainder_n of_o flesh_n &_o corruption_n in_o they_o unreform_v and_o yet_o so_o as_o they_o do_v oppose_v and_o set_v themselves_o what_o they_o can_v and_o higge_n and_o wrestle_v with_o their_o doubt_v by_o set_v against_o the_o same_o holy_a and_o heavenly_a thought_n of_o god_n free_a grace_n &_o gracious_a promise_n as_o also_o the_o strength_n and_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o god_n provoke_v they_o as_o they_o be_v regenerate_v to_o many_o good_a work_n and_o particular_o to_o prayer_n by_o mean_n whereof_o that_o which_o be_v faint_a and_o weak_a in_o and_o of_o themselves_o may_v be_v strengthen_v as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o the_o father_n of_o the_o possess_a child_n mark_n 9_o lord_n i_o believe_v help_v my_o unbelief_n and_o by_o the_o apostle_n beseech_v god_n to_o increase_v their_o faith_n this_o assurance_n of_o their_o heart_n concern_v favour_n from_o god_n and_o salvation_n be_v a_o fruit_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o a_o work_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o they_o without_o which_o indeed_o they_o can_v never_o attain_v thereunto_o and_o that_o doubt_v that_o they_o find_v and_o feel_v flow_v from_o the_o remainder_n of_o their_o corruption_n as_o yet_o unregenerate_v but_o as_o man_n that_o be_v in_o a_o labyrinth_n and_o can_v tell_v which_o way_n to_o get_v out_o do_v more_o and_o more_o inwrappe_v themselves_o so_o fare_v it_o with_o these_o person_n oppose_v themselves_o against_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n and_o assay_v to_o defend_v the_o error_n and_o corruption_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n for_o as_o though_o that_o which_o they_o have_v say_v already_o have_v not_o be_v miry_a and_o filthy_a enough_o they_o yet_o urge_v more_o clay_n and_o dongue_z draw_v out_o of_o the_o beastly_a puddle_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n thus_o therefore_o they_o yet_o press_v and_o urge_v this_o point_n natural_a thing_n that_o be_v such_o thing_n as_o we_o have_v natural_o in_o our_o mind_n be_v not_o sin_n but_o doubt_v be_v natural_a therefore_o it_o be_v not_o sin_n we_o answer_v to_o the_o proposition_n or_o mayor_n by_o distinguish_v natural_a thing_n be_v of_o two_o sort_n that_o be_v either_o such_o as_o we_o have_v first_o from_o god_n by_o creation_n &_o remain_v some_o of_o they_o in_o we_o as_o yet_o untainted_a be_v not_o sin_n as_o for_o example_n our_o fear_n our_o love_n etc._n etc._n simple_o and_o in_o themselves_o consider_v as_o it_o be_v not_o sin_n in_o itself_o to_o have_v that_o passion_n of_o fear_n or_o that_o affection_n of_o fear_n as_o to_o our_o child_n etc._n etc._n so_o that_o they_o be_v free_v from_o extremity_n and_o such_o thing_n in_o the_o consideration_n before_o express_v be_v not_o to_o be_v account_v simple_o sin_n or_o evil_n but_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n now_o count_v natural_a which_o have_v both_o come_v upon_o &_o prevail_v upon_o the_o purity_n of_o our_o nature_n as_o it_o be_v in_o creation_n as_o for_o example_n ignorance_n in_o steed_n of_o our_o knowledge_n doubt_v or_o distrustfulnes_n in_o stead_n of_o our_o hope_n etc._n etc._n and_o these_o can_v choose_v but_o be_v evil_a for_o even_o as_o our_o creation_n and_o all_o the_o thing_n we_o have_v therein_o come_v from_o god_n make_v we_o to_o be_v denominate_v good_a because_o nothing_o can_v come_v from_o he_o but_o that_o which_o be_v good_a so_o these_o proceed_n from_o a_o contrary_a fountain_n that_o be_v satan_n and_o his_o malice_n can_v choose_v but_o be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n that_o he_o be_v of_o that_o be_v evil_a &_o sinful_a and_o therefore_o concern_v doubt_v say_v that_o it_o be_v natural_a indeed_o but_o not_o as_o from_o our_o first_o creation_n for_o than_o it_o shall_v have_v be_v good_a but_o come_v unto_o our_o nature_n after_o the_o fall_n and_o so_o be_v deprave_a be_v evil_a special_o when_o it_o be_v refer_v to_o god_n as_o in_o all_o this_o question_n it_o be_v for_o though_o when_o we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o man_n special_o such_o as_o who_o for_o their_o waywardness_n inconstancy_n &_o other_o corruption_n that_o we_o ourselves_o have_v have_v experience_n of_o we_o have_v just_a
way_n to_o good_a manner_n be_v never_o to_o late_a and_o shall_v we_o prescribe_v time_n mean_v matter_n or_o any_o thing_n else_o to_o the_o almighty_a god_n be_v able_a and_o will_v also_o at_o what_o time_n &_o how_o it_o please_v himself_o to_o call_v his_o own_o &_o myself_o among_o the_o rest_n he_o call_v some_o soon_o and_o yet_o their_o state_n not_o much_o the_o better_a for_o that_o and_o some_o late_a and_o yet_o their_o condition_n not_o much_o the_o worse_o for_o that_o which_o our_o saviour_n himself_o declare_v in_o the_o parable_n of_o they_o that_o be_v call_v at_o diverse_a time_n to_o work_v in_o his_o vyneyard_n mat._n 20._o where_o those_o that_o be_v call_v at_o the_o dawn_n of_o the_o day_n and_o at_o the_o three_o sixth_o &_o nine_o hour_n they_o murmur_v at_o this_o that_o they_o come_v at_o the_o eleven_o hour_n receive_v as_o much_o as_o themselves_o which_o have_v bear_v the_o burden_n and_o heat_n of_o the_o day_n but_o what_o say_v the_o master_n of_o the_o vineyard_n friend_n i_o have_v do_v you_o no_o wrong_n take_v that_o which_o be_v your_o own_o go_v your_o way_n i_o will_v give_v unto_o this_o last_o as_o much_o as_o unto_o you_o and_o why_o do_v he_o so_o but_o that_o we_o may_v see_v that_o to_o be_v true_a in_o himself_o which_o he_o say_v of_o himself_o he_o will_v have_v mercy_n on_o who_o soever_o he_o will_v have_v mercy_n and_o that_o in_o such_o a_o measure_n of_o mercy_n to_o as_o he_o &_o not_o they_o shall_v think_v best_a yea_o he_o do_v it_o to_o this_o end_n that_o we_o may_v find_v that_o fulfil_v in_o the_o world_n among_o his_o own_o that_o he_o promise_v in_o his_o word_n that_o whensoever_o it_o please_v he_o to_o show_v mercy_n he_o will_v yea_o and_o that_o that_o may_v be_v verify_v which_o follow_v in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o parable_n the_o 1._o shall_v be_v last_o &_o the_o last_o first_o nay_o we_o will_v say_v more_o than_o this_o even_o in_o they_o that_o be_v call_v late_o as_o we_o say_v there_o be_v or_o do_v appear_v many_o time_n more_o evident_a testimony_n of_o faith_n &_o salvation_n then_o in_o those_o that_o be_v call_v somewhat_o soon_o for_o over_o &_o beside_o that_o we_o may_v say_v nothing_o of_o this_o that_o many_o forward_a at_o the_o first_o do_v not_o only_o hold_v slow_o on_o but_o sometime_o slip_v back_o the_o very_a work_n itself_o and_o the_o plenty_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v shed_v abroad_o into_o their_o heart_n do_v plain_o show_v that_o god_n alone_o and_o not_o man_n or_o mean_v have_v wrought_v the_o thing_n and_o therefore_o all_o the_o glory_n thereof_o as_o likewise_o thanks_o for_o it_o to_o be_v return_v unto_o he_o whereas_o if_o it_o be_v a_o work_n of_o great_a continuance_n we_o will_v or_o may_v seem_v to_o ascribe_v it_o partly_o to_o length_n of_o time_n and_o partly_o to_o some_o other_o instrument_n or_o mean_n use_v in_o the_o effect_n thereof_o if_o any_o man_n doubt_n of_o this_o let_v he_o look_v upon_o the_o example_n of_o one_o of_o the_o thief_n that_o be_v crucify_v with_o christ_n oh_o what_o a_o heavenly_a and_o holy_a end_n make_v he_o and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o rebuke_v evil_a in_o his_o lewd_a and_o wicked_a companion_n neither_o yet_o in_o justify_v the_o innocence_n and_o clearness_n of_o our_o saviour_n but_o in_o call_v upon_o he_o and_o that_o from_o the_o bottom_n of_o his_o heart_n for_o mercy_n all_o which_o be_v special_o this_o last_o be_v full_a of_o singular_a grace_n in_o regard_n of_o god_n and_o marvellous_a consort_n in_o respect_n of_o us._n from_o whence_o also_o i_o think_v we_o may_v infer_v that_o whosoever_o he_o be_v that_o do_v but_o in_o the_o very_a pinch_n of_o death_n feel_v these_o holy_a and_o heavenly_a motion_n he_o may_v certain_o assure_v himself_o of_o infallible_a testimony_n of_o faith_n and_o by_o consequent_a also_o of_o eternal_a salvation_n because_o faith_n and_o everlasting_a life_n be_v never_o sunder_v in_o god_n child_n for_o the_o feel_n of_o it_o in_o this_o life_n and_o the_o fruition_n of_o it_o in_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v and_o if_o in_o my_o death_n the_o feel_n of_o these_o motion_n may_v yield_v i_o spiritual_a &_o heavenly_a comfort_n why_o shall_v they_o not_o also_o minister_v unto_o i_o strong_a consolation_n at_o what_o time_n soever_o in_o my_o life_n god_n of_o his_o own_o bountiful_a liberality_n make_v i_o a_o plentiful_a partaker_n thereof_o beside_o all_o this_o satan_n that_o have_v be_v say_v i_o must_v and_o will_v tell_v thou_o one_o thing_n further_o not_o only_o for_o the_o full_a confutation_n of_o that_o which_o thou_o obiecte_v but_o even_o for_o the_o throwinge_v of_o thy_o own_o dongue_z and_o filthiness_n into_o thy_o own_o face_n for_o howsoever_o in_o other_o thing_n thou_o show_v thyself_o to_o be_v a_o most_o subtle_a adversary_n yet_o therein_o i_o will_v from_o thyself_o take_v that_o that_o shall_v hinder_v i_o from_o yield_v if_o there_o be_v nothing_o else_o be_v there_o any_o thing_n more_o gross_a in_o the_o world_n than_o popery_n which_o thou_o have_v hatch_v and_o bring_v forth_o to_o behold_v this_o light_n among_o popery_n be_v there_o any_o point_n more_o detestable_a than_o that_o of_o man_n merit_n do_v not_o this_o thy_o temptation_n open_o under_o prop_n and_o shore_n up_o the_o ruinous_a bulwark_n or_o butteresse_n if_o for_o the_o length_n of_o my_o call_n i_o shall_v be_v accept_v shall_v not_o god_n be_v move_v with_o worldly_a respect_n for_o my_o very_a call_n itself_o though_o nevet_n so_o effectual_a i_o be_o not_o respect_v but_o for_o god_n free_a favour_n and_o last_v cast_v upon_o i_o in_o christ_n and_o therefore_o not_o for_o the_o length_n of_o time_n wherein_o i_o be_o call_v for_o i_o may_v reason_v of_o my_o call_n as_o i_o do_v of_o other_o grace_n of_o god_n the_o faith_n that_o god_n have_v wrought_v in_o i_o be_v a_o excellent_a grace_n and_o indeed_o the_o hand_n as_o it_o be_v to_o lay_v hold_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o yet_o i_o be_o not_o save_v for_o my_o faith_n but_o for_o god_n mercy_n sake_n in_o christ_n jesus_n these_o grace_n of_o faith_n and_o feel_n of_o vocation_n sanctification_n etc._n etc._n be_v bestow_v upon_o i_o and_o wrought_v in_o i_o not_o so_o much_o nay_o indeed_o no_o whit_n at_o all_o for_o the_o work_n of_o my_o salvation_n for_o that_o belong_v unto_o god_n mercy_n and_o christ_n merit_n as_o to_o pledge_v up_o unto_o i_o the_o certainty_n &_o assurance_n of_o that_o and_o all_o other_o grace_n that_o god_n be_v please_v free_o &_o of_o his_o own_o accord_n to_o bestow_v upon_o i_o &_o other_o wretched_a that_o have_v the_o gift_n to_o believe_v but_o satan_n press_v again_o this_o point_n and_o frame_v a_o new_a argument_n thus_o thou_o thyself_o need_v not_o hear_v thyself_o so_o bold_a other_o that_o think_v themselves_o as_o strong_a as_o thou_o do_v thyself_o have_v fall_v away_o thou_o be_v but_o infirm_a and_o weak_a and_o may_v not_o only_o slide_v and_o slip_n but_o fall_v away_o from_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n &_o loose_v the_o faith_n that_o thou_o have_v thou_o can_v not_o therefore_o at_o any_o hand_n be_v sure_a of_o everlasting_a life_n and_o the_o save_n of_o thy_o soul_n but_o i_o tell_v thou_o satan_n though_o i_o can_v be_v content_a thou_o shall_v humble_v i_o myself_o and_o of_o myself_o as_o law_n as_o thou_o can_v and_o i_o know_v it_o also_o sometime_o to_o be_v needful_a by_o reason_n of_o the_o high_a conceit_n that_o flesh_n and_o blood_n carry_v of_o itself_o yet_o thou_o shall_v never_o take_v away_o the_o righteousness_n from_o i_o that_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v i_o nether_a will_v i_o suffer_v he_o to_o be_v blaspheme_v that_o have_v deal_v so_o bountiful_o with_o i_o no_o though_o thou_o shall_v either_o in_o malice_n against_o i_o or_o in_o blasphemye_n against_o god_n write_v a_o book_n much_o less_o shall_v these_o few_o and_o weak_a thing_n overthrow_v my_o hope_n i_o tell_v thou_o therefore_o satan_n that_o though_o i_o be_v infirm_a and_o weak_a in_o myself_o and_o ready_a every_o minute_n of_o a_o hour_n to_o slip_v and_o concern_v who_o goodness_n towards_o i_o i_o have_v that_o sound_n in_o my_o heart_n that_o be_v answer_v to_o the_o
god_n and_o be_v the_o work_n of_o his_o own_o grace_n in_o we_o and_o appoint_v indeed_o among_o other_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n notwithstanding_o the_o weakness_n and_o want_n of_o it_o which_o be_v from_o ourselves_o &_o not_o from_o god_n or_o his_o work_n in_o we_o and_o therefore_o may_v indeed_o comfort_v we_o for_o as_o this_o be_v a_o sure_a rule_n that_o whatsoever_o be_v of_o or_o from_o ourselves_o may_v just_o discourage_v we_o and_o cause_v we_o to_o hang_v down_o our_o head_n for_o shame_n and_o to_o cast_v down_o our_o heart_n for_o fear_n so_o this_o be_v as_o certain_a that_o whatsoever_o be_v from_o god_n may_v and_o aught_o as_o in_o and_o of_o itself_o special_o when_o it_o be_v reverent_o receive_v and_o right_o use_v notwithstanding_o there_o be_v imperfection_n in_o they_o that_o take_v and_o use_v the_o same_o yield_v unto_o we_o singular_a consolation_n hitherto_o concern_v the_o mayor_n now_o for_o the_o minor_a whereunto_o we_o answer_v that_o in_o the_o gospel_n the_o measure_n of_o repentance_n that_o be_v of_o contrition_n faith_n and_o new_a obedience_n be_v not_o prescribe_v my_o meaning_n be_v that_o there_o be_v not_o show_v how_o great_a or_o how_o much_o our_o repentance_n shall_v be_v but_o rather_o the_o thing_n itself_o in_o itself_o &_o the_o soundness_n of_o it_o exact_v or_o require_v so_o that_o we_o may_v safe_o say_v not_o the_o quantity_n of_o it_o as_o whether_o it_o be_v little_a or_o great_a suffice_v but_o the_o soundness_n &_o truth_n of_o it_o suffice_v though_o not_o before_o god_n neither_o for_o there_o be_v want_n in_o we_o &_o our_o good_a work_n that_o way_n yet_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o and_o our_o own_o assurance_n for_o though_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o our_o purpose_n or_o before_o god_n yet_o it_o may_v suffice_v for_o another_o and_z as_o in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o for_o even_o as_o not_o the_o quantity_n so_o much_o as_o the_o quality_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o truth_n and_o steadfastness_n of_o it_o be_v it_o that_o in_o some_o sort_n commend_v we_o to_o god_n but_o special_o minister_v much_o comfort_n to_o our_o own_o conscience_n and_o as_o not_o long_o and_o many_o prayer_n but_o short_a and_o sweet_a as_o we_o may_v say_v yea_o so_o do_v we_o say_v and_o believe_v also_o touch_v all_o other_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o namely_o our_o repentance_n and_o let_v this_o suffice_v for_o this_o point_n 8_o their_a eight_o argument_n they_o make_v thus_o pride_n be_v a_o vice_n displease_v god_n on_o the_o other_o side_n humility_n and_o modesty_n be_v a_o virtue_n that_o he_o take_v delight_n in_o but_o for_o a_o man_n to_o say_v that_o he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n and_o be_v assure_v of_o eternal_a salvation_n be_v a_o point_n of_o arrogancy_n as_o again_o to_o doubt_v whether_o he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n a_o token_n of_o modesty_n and_o humility_n therefore_o for_o a_o man_n to_o say_v that_o he_o be_v sure_a he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n be_v a_o soul_n fault_n and_o to_o doubt_v of_o it_o be_v a_o goodly_a virtue_n the_o mayor_n of_o this_o proposition_n be_v as_o clear_a as_o possible_a can_v be_v and_o to_o be_v prove_v by_o many_o place_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o particular_o by_o this_o god_n resist_v the_o proud_a and_o give_v grace_n to_o the_o humble_a and_o therefore_o we_o say_v nothing_o to_o it_o but_o willing_o yield_v and_o submit_v ourselves_o to_o the_o truth_n thereof_o but_o the_o minor_a be_v corrupt_a and_o false_a and_o therefore_o we_o deny_v it_o in_o both_o the_o part_n or_o proposition_n of_o it_o for_o it_o be_v not_o arrogancy_n to_o be_v assure_v general_o of_o god_n favour_n for_o all_o mercy_n and_o particular_o of_o his_o grace_n concern_v eternal_a salvation_n since_o god_n himself_o for_o the_o better_a uphold_v of_o our_o heart_n and_o hope_n that_o way_n have_v be_v please_v to_o give_v unto_o we_o many_o gracious_a both_o prop_n and_o promise_n in_o his_o word_n which_o also_o in_o good_a time_n he_o will_v perform_v unto_o we_o as_o he_o have_v do_v to_o many_o of_o his_o faithful_a servant_n who_o have_v go_v before_o we_o in_o the_o flesh_n and_o in_o the_o faith_n for_o this_o and_o not_o that_o be_v arrogancy_n indeed_o to_o take_v that_o which_o do_v not_o belong_v unto_o we_o or_o to_o presume_v of_o this_o or_o that_o which_o we_o have_v not_o and_o yet_o deceive_v in_o our_o own_o heart_n imagine_v we_o have_v it_o or_o else_o have_v it_o to_o be_v puff_v up_o with_o a_o conceit_n of_o have_v more_o than_o we_o enjoy_v or_o else_o enjoy_v it_o to_o be_v proud_a of_o it_o either_o as_o though_o we_o have_v not_o receive_v it_o or_o as_o though_o god_n have_v give_v it_o we_o to_o that_o end_n to_o make_v we_o swell_v over_o other_o but_o to_o assure_v ourselves_o of_o god_n grace_n and_o of_o eternal_a life_n be_v a_o doctrine_n that_o god_n have_v deliver_v in_o his_o word_n for_o the_o good_a and_o stay_n of_o his_o own_o people_n as_o we_o have_v already_o hear_v heretofore_o and_o shall_v again_o hereafter_o hear_v it_o prove_v more_o at_o large_a and_o therefore_o we_o can_v not_o arrogate_v or_o take_v any_o more_o unto_o ourselves_o then_o that_o that_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o free_a favour_n of_o god_n belong_v unto_o we_o and_o presume_v here_o we_o can_v or_o be_v proud_a whether_o we_o have_v it_o or_o have_v not_o for_o it_o be_v madness_n to_o be_v lift_v up_o with_o that_o we_o have_v not_o and_o since_o we_o have_v it_o not_o of_o ourselves_o but_o from_o another_o we_o may_v say_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v what_o have_v thou_o that_o ihou_fw-mi have_v not_o receive_v &_o if_o thou_o have_v receive_v it_o why_o reioyc_a thou_o as_o though_o thou_o have_v not_o receive_v it_o and_o again_o we_o know_v god_n give_v no_o grace_n to_o any_o evil_a end_n howesoever_o man_n in_o his_o own_o corruption_n and_o satan_n in_o his_o malice_n against_o he_o abuse_v they_o many_o time_n thereto_o but_o as_o the_o grace_n themselves_o be_v good_a so_o both_o he_o in_o his_o purpose_n do_v and_o we_o in_o our_o practice_n ought_v to_o aim_v at_o good_a end_n and_o effect_n that_o so_o the_o one_o answer_v the_o other_o he_o may_v have_v glory_n other_o man_n good_a and_o ourselves_o comfort_n on_o the_o other_o side_n it_o be_v not_o humility_n to_o doubt_v of_o god_n favour_n but_o distrustfulnes_n or_o doubt_v rather_o for_o humility_n respect_v not_o god_n or_o not_o reach_v unto_o he_o though_o it_o be_v acceptable_a in_o his_o eye_n as_o other_o
