person_n of_o man_n and_o according_o to_o make_v a_o difference_n between_o man_n if_o he_o see_v a_o poor_a man_n that_o be_v a_o sound_n christian_n though_o he_o be_v contemn_v in_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o world_n yet_o if_o it_o appear_v to_o he_o that_o he_o have_v grace_n in_o his_o heart_n or_o if_o he_o make_v a_o outward_a profession_n of_o love_n to_o god_n he_o do_v high_o esteem_v of_o he_o because_o of_o grace_n on_o the_o contrary_a if_o he_o see_v a_o great_a man_n though_o in_o great_a honour_n and_o esteem_v with_o man_n yet_o he_o respect_v he_o not_o if_o he_o want_v grace_n therefore_o examine_v yourselves_o whether_o you_o be_v able_a to_o distinguish_v of_o person_n in_o this_o kind_n second_o for_o thing_n he_o be_v able_a to_o judge_v of_o thing_n thing_n whether_o they_o be_v spiritual_a or_o earthly_a he_o be_v able_a now_o to_o know_v what_o be_v truth_n and_o to_o embrace_v it_o and_o what_o be_v error_n and_o to_o refuse_v it_o he_o have_v now_o a_o touchstone_n in_o himself_o that_o be_v he_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o discern_v whereby_o he_o make_v trial_n of_o grace_n and_o lay_n hold_v on_o those_o which_o will_v endure_v the_o touch_n those_o he_o will_v receive_v as_o spiritual_a the_o other_o which_o will_v not_o he_o cast_v out_o as_o counterfeit_v therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v 1_o cor._n 2._o 9_o the_o eye_n have_v not_o see_v nor_o the_o ear_n hear_v neither_o have_v enter_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n the_o thing_n that_o god_n have_v prepare_v for_o they_o that_o love_v he_o that_o be_v he_o be_v not_o able_a regenerate_v or_o no_o by_o his_o affection_n how_o he_o be_v affect_v what_o love_n he_o bear_v unto_o heavenly_a thing_n for_o there_o be_v life_n in_o affection_n and_o as_o a_o man_n that_o live_v know_v that_o he_o live_v so_o a_o man_n that_o have_v spiritual_a love_n in_o his_o heart_n towards_o god_n can_v but_o certain_o know_v it_o except_o it_o be_v in_o time_n of_o temptation_n and_o then_o it_o may_v be_v he_o may_v not_o find_v that_o love_n of_o god_n in_o his_o heart_n but_o this_o sense_n of_o the_o want_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n be_v but_o for_o a_o time_n it_o continue_v not_o therefore_o the_o holy_a ghost_n when_o he_o will_v describe_v a_o heavenly_a mind_a man_n he_o describe_v he_o by_o his_o affection_n as_o the_o best_a mark_n to_o try_v he_o by_o as_o abraham_n will_v command_v his_o servant_n to_o serve_v god_n and_o nehemiah_n fear_v god_n and_o david_n psal._n 112._o 1._o delight_v great_o in_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n now_o keep_v be_v they_o earthly_a or_o heavenly_a thing_n those_o thing_n you_o do_v love_v best_a and_o your_o affection_n be_v most_o set_v upon_o that_o your_o thought_n be_v most_o trouble_v withal_o if_o they_o be_v earthly_a you_o may_v just_o fear_v your_o estate_n for_o the_o affection_n flow_v from_o love_n and_o therefore_o if_o you_o do_v not_o love_v they_o you_o will_v not_o set_v your_o sign_n of_o a_o renew_a heart_n i_o may_v the_o more_o safe_o follow_v he_o our_o saviour_n say_v mat._n 12._o 34._o 34._o that_o out_o of_o the_o abundance_n of_o the_o heart_n the_o mouth_n speak_v that_o be_v there_o be_v abundance_n in_o the_o heart_n either_o of_o good_a or_o evil_n now_o if_o the_o heart_n be_v full_a of_o heavenly_a mindedness_n if_o i_o say_v this_o abundance_n that_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n be_v grace_n than_o it_o will_v appear_v in_o the_o speech_n for_o the_o speech_n do_v natural_o flow_v from_o the_o affection_n that_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n but_o if_o the_o abundance_n that_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n be_v evil_a than_o the_o heart_n can_v but_o send_v out_o foul_a speech_n and_o rot_a communication_n and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n say_v a_o good_a tree_n can_v bring_v forth_o evil_a fruit_n nor_o a_o evil_a tree_n good_a fruit_n it_o be_v unpossible_a that_o a_o heart_n which_o do_v abound_v and_o be_v full_a of_o earthly_a mindedness_n but_o it_o will_v break_v forth_o and_o appear_v by_o his_o speech_n the_o filthiness_n that_o be_v in_o his_o heart_n if_o it_o have_v simile_n not_o vent_v it_o will_v burst_v as_o we_o know_v a_o new_a vessel_n that_o have_v wine_n put_v into_o it_o must_v have_v a_o vent_n or_o else_o it_o will_v burst_v and_o by_o the_o vent_n you_o may_v know_v what_o wine_n it_o be_v so_o the_o speech_n be_v the_o vent_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o by_o they_o you_o may_v see_v what_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n if_o grace_n be_v there_o the_o speech_n s_o will_v favour_v of_o it_o as_o a_o cask_n will_v taste_v of_o that_o which_o be_v in_o it_o but_o you_o will_v say_v the_o heart_n be_v of_o a_o great_a depth_n
and_o who_o can_v search_v it_o who_o be_v able_a to_o know_v whether_o the_o object_n heart_n be_v renew_v or_o no_o by_o the_o speech_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v i_o say_v not_o that_o a_o man_n may_v at_o all_o time_n and_o in_o all_o place_n judge_v of_o it_o aright_o but_o i_o say_v answer_n that_o a_o man_n may_v certain_o know_v himself_o whether_o he_o be_v renew_v or_o no_o which_o be_v the_o thing_n we_o seek_v to_o prove_v in_o this_o place_n that_o a_o man_n may_v know_v from_o what_o root_n they_o spring_v whether_o of_o weakness_n by_o rebellion_n or_o natural_o through_o unmortified_a lust_n i_o say_v not_o but_o sometime_o a_o child_n of_o god_n a_o regenerate_v man_n may_v have_v foul_a speech_n in_o his_o mouth_n &_o yet_o his_o heart_n be_v good_a towards_o god_n he_o may_v have_v rot_a talk_n but_o it_o be_v but_o for_o a_o time_n it_o will_v not_o continue_v and_o it_o will_v cause_v much_o sorrow_n of_o heart_n if_o he_o have_v grace_n when_o his_o conscience_n touch_v he_o for_o it_o 2_o tim._n 2._o 20_o 21._o in_o a_o great_a man_n house_n there_o be_v vessel_n of_o honour_n and_o vessel_n of_o dishonour_n if_o a_o man_n therefore_o open_v purge_v himself_o he_o shall_v be_v a_o vessel_n of_o honour_n and_o yet_o have_v corruption_n in_o he_o there_o may_v corrupt_v communication_n come_v out_o of_o his_o mouth_n and_o yet_o he_o keep_v his_o goodness_n as_o a_o vessel_n of_o gold_n may_v be_v foul_a within_o and_o yet_o cease_v not_o to_o be_v gold_n a_o vessel_n of_o honour_n neither_o lose_v it_o excellency_n so_o a_o regenerate_a man_n may_v have_v in_o the_o abundance_n of_o his_o heart_n some_o chaff_n aswell_o as_o wheat_n some_o corruption_n aswell_o as_o grace_v and_o yet_o be_v a_o vessel_n of_o gold_n that_o be_v heavenly_a mind_v for_o the_o apostle_n say_v if_o anyman_n therefore_o purge_v himself_o he_o shall_v be_v a_o vessel_n of_o honour_n notwithstanding_o his_o corruption_n in_o his_o heart_n &_o it_o appear_v in_o his_o speech_n yet_o if_o he_o purge_v himself_o if_o he_o labour_v to_o mortify_v they_o if_o he_o labour_v to_o rid_v his_o heart_n of_o they_o he_o shall_v be_v a_o vessel_n of_o rottenness_n that_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n will_v appear_v in_o impatiency_n of_o spirit_n three_o you_o may_v know_v whether_o your_o heart_n be_v renew_v by_o your_o action_n this_o also_o our_o saviour_n make_v another_o action_n sign_n of_o a_o renew_a heart_n mat._n 7._o 20._o by_o their_o work_n you_o shall_v know_v they_o that_o be_v by_o their_o action_n now_o every_o thing_n be_v know_v by_o his_o action_n therefore_o examine_v yourselves_o what_o be_v your_o action_n be_v they_o the_o action_n of_o the_o regenerate_a part_n or_o of_o the_o veregenerate_a part_n be_v they_o holy_a action_n or_o be_v they_o unclean_a action_n by_o this_o you_o may_v know_v whether_o you_o be_v heavenly_a mind_a or_o no._n now_o this_o must_v necessary_o follow_v the_o other_o two_o for_o if_o the_o heart_n be_v renew_v then_o there_o will_v be_v heavenly_a affection_n in_o it_o towards_o god_n and_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o if_o heavenly_a affection_n than_o there_o will_v be_v heavenly_a speech_n for_o these_o flow_n from_o heavenly_a affection_n and_o if_o there_o be_v these_o two_o then_o there_o must_v needs_o be_v holy_a action_n therefore_o our_o saviour_n say_v luk._n 6._o 45._o a_o good_a man_n out_o of_o the_o good_a treasure_n of_o his_o heart_n bring_v forth_o good_a fruit_n that_o be_v if_o the_o heart_n have_v in_o it_o a_o treasure_n of_o heavenly_a affection_n and_o speech_n it_o can_v be_v but_o it_o will_v send_v forth_o good_a action_n in_o the_o life_n the_o five_o and_o last_o sign_n whereby_o you_o may_v examine_v yourselves_o whether_o you_o be_v heavenly_a mind_a or_o no_o 5._o be_v by_o examine_v yourselves_o how_o you_o stand_v affect_v towards_o he_o that_o seek_v to_o take_v these_o earthly_a member_n from_o you_o how_o you_o as_o a_o part_n of_o themselves_o than_o you_o can_v touch_v they_o but_o you_o must_v touch_v their_o life_n for_o these_o be_v a_o part_n of_o their_o life_n and_o if_o you_o seek_v to_o take_v these_o away_o you_o seek_v to_o take_v away_o their_o life_n â—ow_o what_o man_n will_v be_v content_v to_o part_v with_o his_o life_n it_o be_v a_o principle_n in_o nature_n that_o god_n have_v implant_v in_o every_o creature_n to_o love_v their_o life_n but_o if_o you_o account_v they_o not_o as_o a_o part_n of_o yourselves_o but_o as_o your_o enemy_n than_o you_o will_v account_v he_o as_o a_o spiritualfriend_n that_o shall_v help_v you_o to_o slay_v they_o for_o who_o be_v there_o that_o will_v not_o love_v he_o that_o shall_v help_v he_o to_o slay_v his_o enemy_n therefore_o if_o the_o heart_n be_v heavenly_a dispose_v he_o reckon_v they_o as_o his_o enemy_n but_o if_o he_o be_v not_o renew_v he_o account_v they_o as_o a_o part_n of_o himself_o therefore_o examine_v yourselves_o by_o this_o whether_o you_o be_v heavenly_a mind_a or_o no._n the_o use_n of_o this_o that_o have_v be_v speak_v be_v for_o exhortation_n use_v unto_o all_o those_o that_o be_v heavenly_a mind_v let_v i_o now_o exhort_v such_o to_o persevere_v in_o heavenly_a mindedness_n let_v they_o labour_n to_o grow_v every_o day_n more_o heavenly_a mind_v then_o other_o rev._n 22._o 11._o let_v leave_v a_o spot_n behind_o it_o now_o we_o know_v that_o if_o a_o man_n have_v a_o rich_a garment_n which_o he_o set_v much_o simile_n by_o he_o will_v be_v marvellous_a careful_a to_o keep_v all_o kind_n of_o grease_n and_o spot_n out_o of_o it_o so_o it_o shall_v be_v a_o christian_n duty_n to_o labour_n to_o keep_v all_o soil_n out_o of_o his_o soul_n because_o it_o be_v a_o precious_a garment_n and_o the_o reside_a place_n of_o the_o spirit_n we_o know_v that_o if_o a_o man_n have_v one_o spot_n in_o his_o garment_n it_o make_v he_o out_o of_o love_n with_o it_o and_o then_o care_v not_o how_o many_o light_n upon_o it_o so_o it_o be_v with_o sin_n if_o thou_o suffer_v thy_o heart_n to_o be_v spot_v but_o with_o one_o sin_n it_o will_v work_v carelessness_n in_o thou_o so_o that_o hereafter_o thou_o will_v not_o much_o care_n what_o sin_n thou_o commit_v nor_o how_o thy_o soul_n be_v soil_v therefore_o it_o behoove_v you_o to_o keep_v your_o heart_n from_o every_o sin_n sense_n and_o affect_v that_o which_o the_o mind_n affect_v and_o thus_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n hang_v upon_o the_o mind_n it_o be_v unpossible_a that_o the_o will_n of_o a_o man_n shall_v will_n and_o affect_v any_o other_o thing_n then_o that_o which_o the_o mind_n be_v affect_v with_o but_o here_o some_o question_n may_v be_v move_v the_o first_o question_n be_v this_o but_o be_v there_o such_o light_n in_o the_o understanding_n 1._o as_o you_o say_v than_o it_o seem_v that_o a_o natural_a man_n mâ—y_n by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n come_v unto_o true_a knowledge_n to_o where_o the_o apostle_n say_v he_o do_v not_o know_v they_o at_o all_o 14._o for_o he_o want_v a_o sanctify_a knowledge_n of_o they_o he_o know_v they_o but_o not_o by_o that_o knowledge_n which_o carnal_a man_n may_v have_v light_n but_o it_o be_v but_o a_o dark_a light_n he_o may_v have_v light_n in_o the_o understanding_n but_o it_o be_v not_o transcendent_a unto_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n to_o transform_v and_o enlighten_v they_o and_o therefore_o though_o he_o have_v light_a yet_o still_o he_o remain_v in_o darkness_n the_o second_o thing_n to_o be_v consider_v be_v this_o with_o a_o spiritual_a man_n before_o he_o be_v regenerate_v he_o listen_v not_o he_o regard_v not_o spiritual_a thing_n when_o he_o hear_v of_o justification_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n he_o slight_o pass_v they_o over_o because_o he_o feel_v himself_o in_o health_n and_o find_v no_o want_n of_o they_o for_o what_o shall_v a_o man_n take_v and_o apply_v a_o plaster_n to_o a_o whole_a place_n that_o have_v no_o need_n of_o such_o a_o thing_n but_o when_o he_o be_v once_o renew_v and_o mortify_v than_o he_o find_v these_o suitable_a to_o his_o disposition_n and_o this_o be_v to_o be_v ready_a to_o receive_v into_o the_o soul_n any_o sin_n or_o embrace_v any_o object_n and_o carry_v the_o impression_n of_o it_o unto_o action_n now_o what_o shall_v move_v we_o to_o morifie_v these_o earthly_a member_n member_n the_o first_o motive_n be_v because_o if_o we_o do_v not_o moritifie_v they_o the_o devil_n will_v ensnare_v we_o by_o these_o earthly_a member_n though_o we_o seem_v not_o to_o be_v within_o 1_o his_o power_n as_o a_o dog_n that_o have_v break_v away_o from_o simile_n his_o keeper_n yet_o go_v with_o his_o chain_n he_o will_v the_o more_o easy_o be_v take_v so_o these_o earthly_a member_n be_v as_o a_o chain_n whereby_o the_o devil_n lay_v hold_v on_o we_o therefore_o if_o you_o will_v not_o be_v take_v by_o satan_n then_o mortify_v these_o earthly_a it_o may_v be_v a_o particular_a loss_n of_o credit_n or_o the_o like_a but_o not_o for_o any_o particular_a sin_n three_o it_o may_v be_v there_o be_v a_o deep_a ground_n the_o 3_o person_n of_o some_o man_n that_o be_v rich_a but_o now_o be_v fall_v and_o therefore_o because_o their_o hope_n depend_v upon_o this_o man_n and_o now_o be_v unable_a to_o help_v they_o they_o be_v deject_v but_o this_o be_v a_o false_a humiliation_n for_o true_a stand_v humiliation_n consist_v in_o a_o abstain_v from_o sin_n because_o it_o be_v displease_v unto_o god_n and_o a_o raise_n up_o of_o the_o heart_n by_o faithin_n christ_n to_o believe_v the_o promise_n both_o of_o justification_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o then_o from_o hence_o flow_v a_o loathe_n of_o sin_n second_o if_o you_o will_v get_v a_o loathe_n of_o earthly_a thing_n you_o must_v remember_v the_o royalty_n of_o the_o spiritual_a thing_n thing_n what_o the_o excellency_n of_o they_o be_v they_o far_o surpass_v all_o the_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n grace_n have_v the_o great_a power_n in_o it_o it_o be_v able_a to_o quench_v fire_n to_o stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o lion_n heb._n 11._o 34._o now_o if_o man_n do_v but_o believe_v 34._o that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o power_n in_o grace_n they_o will_v never_o be_v bring_v to_o mind_n earthly_a thing_n therefore_o labour_n to_o ground_n yourselves_o in_o the_o earthly_a thing_n they_o will_v work_v carelessness_n and_o remissness_n of_o better_a thing_n it_o so_o possess_v his_o heart_n with_o fear_n that_o he_o altogether_o neglect_v spiritual_a thing_n it_o will_v make_v thou_o careless_a in_o prayer_n and_o other_o holy_a duty_n take_v heed_n therefore_o of_o fill_v thy_o heart_n with_o earthly_a thing_n for_o it_o will_v take_v away_o the_o there_o will_v be_v more_o spiritual_a life_n in_o they_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o spiritual_a duty_n therefore_o if_o it_o be_v for_o no_o other_o cause_n but_o this_o that_o you_o may_v be_v enable_v unto_o every_o good_a work_n and_o holy_a duty_n and_o that_o you_o may_v keep_v in_o you_o your_o spiritual_a life_n feel_v and_o move_v labour_v to_o keep_v thy_o heart_n clean_o from_o not_o the_o end_n of_o our_o calling_n for_o that_o look_v only_o to_o god_n we_o must_v not_o make_v gain_v the_o end_n of_o our_o calling_n there_o be_v many_o that_o make_v gain_v their_o godliness_n and_o the_o end_n of_o their_o calling_n some_o preach_v only_o for_o gain_n other_o use_v other_o calling_n only_o for_o gain_n but_o if_o any_o man_n will_v makegaine_v the_o end_n of_o his_o call_n though_o he_o may_v conceal_v and_o hide_v his_o end_n from_o man_n yet_o let_v he_o be_v sure_a that_o he_o shall_v answer_v god_n the_o
