when_o sin_n do_v awake_v they_o out_o of_o sleep_n than_o they_o shall_v find_v it_o be_v not_o mortify_v but_o they_o only_o asleep_a samson_n judg._n 16._o so_o long_o as_o he_o be_v asleep_a in_o his_o sin_n think_v all_o be_v well_o and_o that_o his_o strength_n be_v not_o go_v but_o when_o he_o awake_v out_o of_o sleep_n his_o sin_n awake_v and_o then_o with_o much_o sorrow_n he_o find_v and_o think_v with_o himself_o that_o this_o his_o sin_n be_v mortify_v when_o as_o indeed_o it_o be_v not_o mortify_v but_o only_o remove_v unto_o another_o for_o now_o it_o may_v be_v he_o be_v grow_v ambitious_a and_o seek_v after_o honour_n and_o therefore_o it_o stand_v not_o now_o with_o his_o reputation_n and_o credit_n to_o be_v covetous_a hereupon_o he_o may_v grow_v bountiful_a and_o forsake_v drunkenness_n covetousness_n pride_n and_o the_o like_a and_o yet_o his_o sin_n be_v not_o mortify_v for_o here_o be_v the_o difference_n
than_o he_o can_v do_v to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o the_o regenerate_a man_n be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o than_o he_o can_v do_v in_o these_o two_o particular_n 1._o first_o he_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v any_o duty_n or_o any_o thing_n 1_o god_n command_v according_a to_o the_o proportion_n of_o grace_n man_n that_o he_o have_v receive_v but_o if_o the_o duty_n or_o thing_n exceed_v the_o grace_n that_o he_o have_v receive_v than_o he_o be_v to_o pray_v for_o a_o extraordinary_a help_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o he_o can_v not_o do_v this_o before_o neither_o be_v it_o in_o the_o power_n of_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n to_o do_v it_o second_o he_o be_v able_a to_o resist_v any_o temptation_n or_o sin_n 2_o if_o it_o be_v not_o great_a or_o above_o the_o measure_n of_o grace_n that_o he_o have_v receive_v if_o it_o be_v a_o temptation_n of_o distrust_n or_o impatiency_n or_o presumption_n if_o it_o exceed_v not_o the_o measure_n of_o grace_n that_o he_o have_v receive_v he_o be_v able_a to_o put_v it_o to_o flight_n but_o if_o it_o do_v exceed_v than_o he_o be_v to_o pray_v for_o a_o extraordinary_a help_n of_o the_o spirit_n now_o the_o unregenerate_a man_n have_v no_o power_n to_o resist_v sin_n or_o temptation_n in_o this_o case_n but_o you_o will_v say_v again_o that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o power_n in_o the_o regenerate_a man_n for_o the_o apostle_n say_v gal._n 5._o 17._o 2._o the_o flesh_n lust_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n against_o 17._o the_o flesh_n and_o these_o be_v contrary_a one_o to_o the_o other_o so_o that_o you_o can_v do_v the_o thing_n that_o you_o will_v to_o this_o i_o answer_v it_o be_v true_a that_o in_o the_o most_o sanctify_a man_n thatis_o there_o be_v corruption_n and_o this_o corruption_n 2._o will_v fight_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o may_v sometime_o hinder_v good_a but_o it_o be_v then_o when_o it_o exceed_v the_o measure_n of_o grace_n he_o have_v receive_v neither_o be_v it_o always_o prevail_v in_o this_o kind_n for_o when_o it_o exceed_v not_o the_o grace_n the_o spirit_n overcome_v it_o neither_o do_v it_o always_o continue_v it_o may_v be_v in_o the_o heart_n but_o it_o can_v reign_v in_o the_o heart_n it_o may_v be_v in_o the_o heart_n as_o a_o thief_n in_o a_o house_n not_o to_o have_v residence_n and_o a_o dwell_a place_n but_o for_o a_o night_n and_o be_v go_v so_o this_o lust_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o regenerate_a man_n dwell_v not_o there_o that_o be_v it_o do_v not_o always_o hinder_v he_o from_o good_a but_o for_o a_o time_n and_o then_o depart_v but_o it_o be_v not_o thus_o with_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n sin_n take_v possession_n and_o keep_v possession_n of_o his_o heart_n the_o three_o consectary_n or_o use_n stand_v thus_o see_v the_o apostle_n say_v mortify_v that_o be_v do_v not_o only_o abstain_v from_o the_o 3_o outward_a action_n of_o sin_n but_o from_o the_o thought_n of_o the_o heart_n for_o mortification_n be_v a_o slay_v of_o the_o evil_a disposition_n of_o the_o heart_n aswell_o as_o the_o slay_v of_o the_o action_n of_o the_o body_n mortification_n be_v first_o inward_a and_o then_o outward_a hence_o we_o gather_v this_o point_n that_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o a_o man_n to_o abstain_v from_o the_o action_n heart_n of_o sin_n but_o he_o must_v abstain_v from_o sin_n in_o his_o heart_n if_o he_o will_v prove_v his_o mortification_n to_o be_v true_a 2_o pet._n 2._o 14._o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o their_o eye_n be_v fullof_o adultery_n now_o lust_n be_v not_o in_o the_o eye_n but_o in_o the_o heart_n but_o by_o this_o he_o fhewe_v that_o it_o be_v the_o fullness_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o heart_n that_o fill_v the_o eye_n therefore_o look_v unto_o the_o heart_n for_o the_o action_n be_v but_o the_o branch_n but_o the_o root_n be_v in_o the_o heart_n that_o be_v whatsoever_o evil_a action_n be_v in_o the_o hand_n it_o have_v its_o first_o breed_n in_o the_o heart_n if_o therefore_o you_o will_v great_a than_o the_o effect_n it_o produce_v even_o so_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o heart_n because_o it_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o evil_a action_n be_v great_a than_o the_o evil_a that_o it_o produce_v then_o think_v not_o with_o you_o self_n that_o if_o you_o abstain_v from_o the_o outward_a gross_a action_n of_o sin_n that_o sin_n be_v mortify_v in_o you_o but_o go_v first_o unto_o the_o cause_n and_o see_v whether_o that_o evil_a disposition_n of_o the_o heart_n be_v mortify_v whether_o there_o be_v wrought_v in_o you_o a_o new_a disposition_n to_o good_a and_o a_o wither_a of_o all_o inordinate_a affection_n but_o you_o will_v say_v unto_o i_o our_o saviour_n say_v that_o every_o man_n shall_v be_v judge_v by_o his_o work_n and_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o every_o man_n shall_v or_o the_o evil_a that_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n so_o that_o he_o will_v judge_v the_o heart_n first_o as_o the_o cause_n and_o then_o the_o action_n as_o the_o effect_n rom._n 8._o 27._o it_o be_v say_v he_o that_o search_v the_o heart_n know_v the_o mind_n of_o the_o spirit_n so_o it_o be_v as_o true_a that_o he_o know_v the_o mind_n of_o the_o flesh_n that_o be_v the_o action_n of_o the_o unregenerate_a part_n now_o as_o the_o sap_n be_v great_a in_o the_o root_n than_o in_o the_o branch_n so_o the_o great_a sin_n be_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o therefore_o it_o shall_v receive_v great_a punishment_n therefore_o if_o the_o root_n be_v not_o purge_v notwithstanding_o thou_o abstain_v from_o the_o outward_a action_n thou_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o mortify_a sin_n because_o thy_o heart_n whence_o spring_v many_o branch_n and_o therefore_o have_v need_n of_o continual_a mortification_n because_o the_o flesh_n will_v still_o lust_n against_o the_o spirit_n and_o although_o there_o be_v such_o corruption_n in_o they_o yet_o be_v they_o not_o under_o the_o power_n of_o it_o neither_o do_v it_o bear_v rule_v in_o they_o let_v they_o therefore_o that_o have_v not_o set_v upon_o this_o work_n of_o mortification_n now_o begin_v to_o mortify_v their_o lust_n and_o let_v all_o those_o that_o have_v already_o begin_v continue_v in_o this_o work_n thus_o much_o for_o the_o use_n but_o may_v at_o all_o time_n and_o in_o all_o place_n judge_v of_o it_o aright_o but_o i_o say_v answer_n that_o a_o man_n may_v certain_o know_v himself_o whether_o he_o be_v renew_v or_o no_o which_o be_v the_o thing_n we_o seek_v to_o prove_v in_o this_o place_n that_o a_o man_n may_v know_v from_o what_o root_n they_o spring_v whether_o of_o weakness_n by_o rebellion_n or_o natural_o through_o unmortified_a lust_n i_o say_v not_o but_o sometime_o a_o child_n of_o god_n a_o regenerate_v man_n may_v have_v foul_a speech_n in_o his_o mouth_n &_o yet_o his_o heart_n be_v good_a towards_o god_n he_o may_v have_v rot_a talk_n but_o it_o be_v but_o for_o a_o time_n it_o will_v not_o continue_v and_o it_o will_v cause_v much_o sorrow_n of_o heart_n if_o he_o have_v grace_n when_o his_o conscience_n touch_v he_o for_o it_o 2_o tim._n 2._o 20_o 21._o in_o a_o great_a man_n house_n there_o be_v vessel_n of_o honour_n and_o vessel_n of_o dishonour_n if_o a_o man_n therefore_o open_v purge_v himself_o he_o shall_v be_v a_o vessel_n of_o honour_n and_o yet_o have_v corruption_n in_o he_o there_o may_v corrupt_v communication_n come_v out_o of_o his_o mouth_n and_o yet_o he_o keep_v rottenness_n that_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n will_v appear_v in_o impatiency_n of_o spirit_n three_o you_o may_v know_v whether_o your_o heart_n be_v renew_v by_o your_o action_n this_o also_o our_o saviour_n make_v another_o action_n sign_n of_o a_o renew_a heart_n mat._n 7._o 20._o by_o their_o work_n you_o shall_v know_v they_o that_o be_v by_o their_o action_n now_o every_o thing_n be_v know_v by_o his_o action_n therefore_o examine_v yourselves_o what_o be_v your_o action_n be_v they_o the_o action_n of_o the_o regenerate_a part_n or_o of_o the_o veregenerate_a part_n be_v they_o holy_a action_n or_o be_v they_o unclean_a action_n by_o this_o you_o may_v know_v whether_o you_o be_v heavenly_a mind_a or_o no._n now_o this_o must_v necessary_o follow_v the_o other_o two_o for_o if_o the_o heart_n be_v renew_v then_o there_o will_v be_v heavenly_a affection_n in_o it_o towards_o god_n and_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o if_o heavenly_a affection_n than_o there_o will_v be_v heavenly_a speech_n for_o these_o flow_n from_o heavenly_a affection_n and_o if_o there_o be_v these_o two_o then_o there_o must_v needs_o be_v holy_a action_n therefore_o our_o saviour_n say_v luk._n 6._o 45._o a_o good_a man_n out_o of_o the_o good_a treasure_n of_o his_o heart_n bring_v forth_o good_a fruit_n that_o be_v if_o the_o heart_n have_v in_o it_o a_o treasure_n of_o heavenly_a these_o away_o you_o seek_v to_o take_v away_o their_o life_n â—ow_o what_o man_n will_v be_v content_v to_o part_v with_o his_o life_n it_o be_v a_o principle_n in_o nature_n that_o god_n have_v implant_v in_o every_o creature_n to_o love_v their_o life_n but_o if_o you_o account_v they_o not_o as_o a_o part_n of_o yourselves_o but_o as_o your_o enemy_n than_o you_o will_v account_v he_o as_o kind_n of_o grease_n and_o spot_n out_o of_o it_o so_o it_o shall_v be_v a_o christian_n duty_n to_o labour_n to_o keep_v all_o soil_n out_o of_o his_o soul_n because_o it_o be_v a_o precious_a garment_n and_o the_o reside_a place_n of_o the_o spirit_n we_o know_v that_o if_o a_o man_n have_v one_o spot_n in_o his_o garment_n it_o make_v he_o out_o of_o love_n with_o it_o and_o then_o care_v not_o how_o many_o light_n upon_o it_o so_o it_o be_v with_o sin_n if_o thou_o suffer_v thy_o heart_n to_o be_v spot_v but_o with_o one_o sin_n it_o will_v work_v carelessness_n in_o thou_o so_o that_o hereafter_o thou_o will_v not_o much_o care_n what_o sin_n thou_o commit_v nor_o how_o thy_o soul_n be_v soil_v therefore_o it_o behoove_v you_o to_o keep_v your_o heart_n from_o every_o sin_n covenant_n of_o god_n be_v not_o violate_v as_o by_o the_o other_o speak_v of_o prov._n 2._o 17._o neither_o find_v we_o the_o punishment_n absolute_o to_o be_v death_n yet_o it_o be_v a_o 17._o grievous_a sin_n and_o to_o be_v fear_v in_o that_o it_o subject_n those_o man_n that_o be_v guilty_a of_o it_o to_o the_o curse_n of_o god_n and_o damnation_n for_o the_o apostle_n say_v 1_o cor._n every_o sin_n there_o be_v a_o certain_a contrariety_n 1_o and_o repugnancy_n as_o in_o nature_n we_o know_v there_o be_v betwixt_o heat_n and_o cold_a now_o in_o all_o contrary_n a_o intense_a degree_n be_v more_o repugnant_a than_o a_o remiss_a as_o a_o intense_a heat_n be_v more_o contrary_a than_o a_o heat_n in_o a_o less_o degree_n so_o it_o be_v with_o god_n spirit_n and_o this_o sin_n destruction_n as_o long_o as_o the_o lord_n look_v for_o any_o fruit_n of_o any_o man_n he_o keep_v he_o from_o this_o pit_n but_o such_o as_o notwithstanding_o all_o his_o water_v prune_a and_o dress_v will_v bring_v forth_o no_o fruit_n with_o those_o the_o lord_n be_v angry_a they_o shall_v fall_v into_o it_o now_o as_o in_o a_o ladder_n or_o any_o thing_n that_o have_v step_n to_o by_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n and_o out_o of_o a_o love_n unto_o god_n to_o begin_v to_o mortify_v sin_n if_o the_o heart_n in_o this_o case_n do_v fight_v against_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v the_o lust_n of_o the_o heart_n it_o be_v because_o it_o have_v receive_v the_o deadly_a wound_n but_o if_o it_o be_v not_o our_o of_o love_n unto_o god_n that_o thou_o mortifie_v sin_n if_o thy_o heart_n in_o this_o case_n have_v much_o rebellion_n in_o it_o whatsoever_o thou_o think_v of_o thyself_o sin_n be_v not_o mortify_v in_o thou_o every_o thing_n proceed_v from_o some_o cause_n if_o the_o cause_n be_v good_a the_o effect_n must_v needs_o be_v good_a likewise_o as_o for_o instance_n if_o the_o tree_n be_v good_a the_o fruit_n must_v be_v good_a but_o if_o the_o tree_n be_v evil_a the_o fruit_n can_v be_v good_a let_v every_o man_n therefore_o examine_v himself_o upon_o this_o ground_n second_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o the_o we_o rebel_n against_o god_n and_o who_o motive_n will_v be_v a_o rebel_n and_o traitor_n against_o god_n and_o christ_n who_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o his_o be_v the_o apostle_n say_v be_v servantsunto_o sin_n we_o become_v servant_n 19_o of_o unrighteousness_n rom._n 6._o 19_o that_o be_v if_o we_o suffer_v sin_n to_o reign_v in_o we_o than_o we_o become_v servant_n of_o have_v take_v possession_n of_o the_o heart_n it_o draw_v and_o expel_v away_o all_o the_o darkness_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o make_v it_o to_o look_v and_o to_o see_v christ_n in_o a_o more_o excellent_a manner_n than_o before_o assure_v he_o of_o perfect_a justification_n and_o remission_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o here_o the_o error_n of_o many_o be_v meet_v withal_o in_o the_o confute_v matter_n of_o mortification_n they_o will_v have_v mortification_n first_o wrought_v and_o then_o they_o will_v lay_v hold_n upon_o christ_n for_o remission_n of_o sin_n oh_o say_v they_o if_o i_o sin_n than_o he_o begin_v to_o mortify_v and_o to_o slay_v his_o corruption_n for_o mortification_n be_v a_o fruit_n of_o faith_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v phil._n 3._o 10._o that_o i_o order_n now_o if_o man_n do_v but_o know_v the_o benefit_n of_o this_o change_n they_o will_v be_v more_o easy_o persuade_v to_o leave_v earthly_a mindedness_n the_o second_o motive_n to_o move_v all_o man_n to_o leave_v earthly_a thing_n mindedness_n be_v because_o there_o be_v no_o sweetness_n in_o these_o earthly_a member_n there_o be_v a_o insufficiency_n in_o they_o they_o can_v give_v any_o true_a content_n to_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n and_o that_o they_o can_v do_v it_o this_o be_v clear_a by_o two_o particular_n first_o this_o arise_v from_o the_o mutability_n of_o the_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o meet_v with_o his_o absalon_n above_o all_o the_o rest_n if_o ely_n will_v not_o correct_v his_o son_n but_o let_v they_o dishonour_v the_o worship_n &_o service_n of_o god_n proceed_v from_o a_o evil_a root_n but_o this_o desire_n proceed_v from_o a_o evil_a root_n and_o a_o bitter_a that_o be_v from_o lust_n it_o come_v not_o from_o god_n spirit_n which_o bid_v every_o man_n to_o be_v content_v with_o food_n and_o raiment_n nor_o yet_o from_o nature_n which_o seek_v not_o superfluity_n therefore_o proceed_v from_o lust_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v sinful_a three_o
