must_v needs_o receive_v and_o embrace_v it_o with_o their_o heart_n that_o so_o their_o heart_n love_v and_o like_n and_o believe_v it_o may_v set_v all_o their_o sense_n and_o all_o the_o part_n of_o their_o body_n on_o work_n to_o practice_v it_o 4._o last_o the_o heart_n be_v the_o safe_a place_n for_o it_o as_o swoon_v corn_n if_o it_o lie_v on_o the_o top_n of_o the_o furrow_n may_v easy_o be_v devour_v by_o the_o fowl_n of_o the_o air_n but_o if_o it_o be_v hide_v and_o cover_v be_v free_a from_o that_o danger_n so_o the_o word_n which_o thou_o hear_v if_o it_o go_v no_o further_o than_o thy_o ear_n or_o head_n it_o be_v easy_o take_v from_o thou_o but_o if_o it_o descend_v to_o the_o bottom_n of_o thy_o heart_n it_o may_v there_o be_v safe_o keep_v it_o be_v a_o heavenly_a treasure_n and_o therefore_o thou_o must_v imitate_v that_o man_n who_o find_v a_o treasure_n in_o the_o field_n do_v 44._o hide_v it_o and_o for_o joy_n thereof_o go_v and_o sell_v all_o that_o he_o have_v to_o buy_v that_o field_n though_o man_n will_v suffer_v their_o base_a stuff_n and_o wooden_a vessel_n to_o be_v more_o common_a and_o lie_v more_o open_a and_o remain_v in_o with_o their_o heart_n than_o those_o who_o bring_v their_o body_n to_o the_o church_n and_o leave_v their_o heart_n at_o home_n who_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n with_o their_o lip_n and_o with_o their_o ear_n when_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o he_o can_v be_v good_a hearer_n if_o thou_o will_v be_v of_o that_o number_n prepare_v thy_o heart_n before_o hand_n and_o while_o thou_o hear_v let_v not_o thy_o heart_n be_v think_v on_o any_o by-matter_n but_o only_o attend_v to_o that_o hear_v with_o thy_o heart_n as_o well_o as_o with_o thy_o ear_n and_o then_o shall_v thou_o be_v bless_v by_o thy_o hear_n 2._o again_o note_v hence_o more_o special_o the_o quality_n and_o disposition_n of_o their_o heart_n who_o hear_v profitable_o they_o hear_v with_o a_o honest_a and_o good_a heart_n it_o be_v not_o any_o kind_n of_o heart_n that_o will_v make_v your_o hear_n profitable_a it_o must_v be_v a_o honest_a and_o good_a heart_n though_o thou_o shall_v hear_v with_o thy_o heart_n as_o well_o as_o with_o thy_o ear_n yet_o unless_o it_o be_v a_o good_a heart_n it_o will_v little_o avail_v thou_o for_o in_o the_o goodness_n of_o the_o heart_n consist_v a_o main_a difference_n betwixt_o these_o hearer_n and_o some_o of_o the_o former_a those_o which_o be_v compare_v to_o stony_a ground_n do_v hear_v with_o their_o heart_n for_o they_o be_v say_v not_o only_o to_o hear_v but_o also_o to_o receive_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n yet_o be_v they_o not_o good_a and_o honest_a heart_n they_o be_v hard_a and_o stony_a and_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o word_n to_o take_v root_a deep_a enough_o and_o those_o that_o be_v resemble_v to_o thorny_a ground_n do_v hear_v with_o their_o heart_n yet_o be_v their_o heart_n not_o good_a they_o be_v full_a of_o worldly_a care_n and_o carnal_a delight_n which_o afterward_o choke_v the_o word_n but_o these_o receive_v it_o with_o good_a and_o honest_a heart_n agathe_v and_o therefore_o do_v both_o retain_v it_o and_o obey_v it_o in_o describe_v of_o the_o quality_n of_o this_o their_o hart_n christ_n here_o use_v two_o word_n which_o be_v of_o a_o near_a yet_o not_o of_o the_o same_o signification_n there_o be_v some_o difference_n ketwixt_n they_o the_o one_o proper_o signify_v fair_a beautiful_a seemly_a and_o comely_a the_o other_o signify_v good_a and_o excellent_a the_o one_o note_v the_o outward_a apparent_a quality_n the_o other_o express_v the_o inward_a nature_n and_o inherent_a property_n of_o the_o thing_n and_o so_o here_o by_o be_v locum_fw-la signify_v that_o the_o heart_n of_o these_o hearer_n be_v good_a each_o way_n both_o outward_o before_o man_n manifest_v itself_o to_o be_v good_a by_o open_a profession_n by_o abundance_n of_o fruit_n and_o by_o constant_a perseverance_n and_o also_o inward_o in_o itself_o and_o before_o god_n by_o a_o sincere_a sanctification_n and_o holy_a disposition_n and_o so_o their_o heart_n differ_v from_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o former_a hearer_n for_o though_o they_o in_o receyve_v the_o worde_n with_o joy_n in_o believe_v it_o and_o bring_v forth_o some_o fruit_n of_o it_o do_v make_v some_o fair_a show_n and_o give_v some_o outward_a sign_n of_o a_o good_a heart_n yet_o their_o heart_n be_v not_o effectual_o sanctify_v within_o and_o they_o make_v those_o fair_a show_n but_o for_o a_o time_n afterwards_o they_o revolt_a in_o time_n of_o tentation_n or_o fail_v in_o their_o fruit_n through_o worldly_a care_n and_o voluptuousness_n bewray_v the_o filthiness_n of_o their_o heart_n those_o than_o that_o will_v be_v good_a hearer_n must_v have_v good_a heart_n both_o way_n both_o inward_o in_o their_o own_o nature_n and_o inclination_n as_o also_o outward_o before_o man_n by_o the_o fruit_n and_o testimony_n as_o be_v the_o heart_n so_o will_v the_o hear_n be_v good_a meet_a will_v not_o nourish_v that_o man_n body_n who_o have_v a_o bad_a stomach_n that_o can_v well_o
disposition_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o therefore_o a_o marry_a person_n hear_v in_o a_o better_a manner_n and_o receive_v the_o word_n with_o a_o better_a heart_n than_o a_o virgin_n then_o a_o widow_n shall_v bring_v forth_o more_o fruit_n of_o the_o word_n and_o receive_v more_o benefit_n by_o his_o hear_n 3._o again_o god_n will_v neither_o respect_v nor_o reward_v any_o for_o their_o outward_a estate_n and_o condition_n but_o for_o the_o right_a use_n of_o they_o and_o for_o their_o good_a carriage_n and_o godly_a behaulour_n in_o they_o and_o therefore_o augustine_n say_v of_o god_n together_o and_o all_o be_v profitable_a hearer_n and_o all_o be_v save_v by_o their_o hear_n yet_o all_o do_v not_o profit_v alike_o nor_o bring_v forth_o the_o same_o fruit_n of_o obedience_n in_o their_o life_n but_o some_o few_o some_o more_o according_a as_o their_o heart_n be_v prepare_v and_o according_a as_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n to_o bestow_v his_o grace_n yea_o though_o they_o all_o hear_v one_o and_o the_o same_o man_n and_o the_o same_o sermon_n and_o one_o hear_v as_o often_o as_o another_o yet_o may_v one_o be_v more_o plentiful_a in_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o word_n then_o be_v another_o all_o furrow_n of_o the_o same_o land_n do_v not_o bring_v forth_o a_o equal_a number_n of_o ear_n and_o all_o ear_n of_o the_o same_o furrowe_n do_v not_o bear_v a_o equal_a number_n of_o grain_n but_o some_o more_o some_o less_o as_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n to_o give_v a_o increase_n the_o consideration_n whereof_o serve_v for_o the_o instruction_n of_o accept_v of_o their_o obedience_n and_o the_o worde_n which_o they_o hear_v shall_v save_v their_o soul_n as_o husbandman_n be_v glad_a of_o all_o ear_n which_o have_v corn_n in_o they_o though_o some_o be_v long_o some_o short_a some_o contain_v more_o grain_n some_o contain_v few_o yet_o will_v they_o gather_v all_o into_o the_o barn_n so_o god_n do_v accept_v of_o all_o person_n that_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o word_n and_o will_v bring_v to_o heaven_n as_o well_o those_o that_o have_v lesser_a as_o those_o that_o have_v more_o fruit_n such_o be_v his_o mercy_n and_o bounty_n that_o although_o he_o require_v the_o same_o measure_n of_o all_o yet_o find_v difference_n among_o they_o because_o of_o the_o diversity_n of_o his_o grace_n he_o do_v so_o receive_v the_o first_o and_o the_o best_a as_o he_o do_v not_o refuse_v the_o second_o and_o middle-sorte_n nor_o yet_o reject_v the_o last_o and_o least_o under_o the_o law_n there_o be_v some_o sacrifice_n cheap_a hear_v yet_o wisdom_n shall_v be_v iustify_v of_o her_o child_n as_o many_o as_o be_v ordain_v to_o eternal_a life_n shall_v believe_v some_o shall_v be_v call_v and_o by_o hear_v shall_v grow_v in_o knowledge_n in_o grace_n and_o obedience_n this_o may_v comfort_v and_o encourage_v we_o in_o our_o labour_n though_o it_o be_v some_o grief_n to_o see_v many_o non_fw-la proficient_o who_o hear_v will_v they_o be_v such_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o this_o heavenly_a seed_n that_o it_o will_v not_o make_v the_o ground_n more_o barren_a but_o more_o fertile_a by_o often_o sow_v as_o the_o seed_n be_v good_a that_o be_v sow_v in_o your_o heart_n so_o let_v the_o soil_n be_v make_v answerable_a unto_o it_o and_o then_o you_o need_v not_o to_o doubt_v of_o a_o plentiful_a increase_n let_v not_o that_o hear_v much_o and_o practice_v little_a have_v bad_a heart_n but_o those_o that_o hear_v and_o practice_v the_o word_n in_o their_o life_n have_v honest_a and_o good_a heart_n though_o none_o know_v the_o heart_n of_o another_o immediate_o and_o direct_o but_o god_n alone_o who_o be_v the_o only_a searcher_n of_o it_o yet_o as_o the_o physician_n can_v judge_v of_o the_o inward_a temperature_n of_o the_o body_n by_o the_o pulse_n and_o as_o we_o may_v judge_v of_o the_o tree_n by_o the_o fruit_n so_o may_v we_o judge_v of_o the_o inward_a goodness_n and_o badness_n of_o the_o heart_n by_o the_o outward_a behaviour_n in_o the_o life_n and_o to_o keep_v i_o to_o the_o present_a comparison_n of_o this_o parable_n if_o a_o man_n know_v a_o field_n sow_v in_o a_o good_a sort_n with_o good_a seed_n yet_o afterward_o do_v see_v the_o corn_n to_o be_v thin_a and_o course_n and_o yield_v no_o good_a crop_n he_o will_v say_v the_o ground_n be_v barren_a but_o if_o he_o pass_v by_o a_o close_a towards_o harvest_n time_n and_o see_v the_o corn_n very_o thick_a and_o rank_a and_o bear_v a_o long_a ear_n full_a of_o corn_n he_o will_v say_v it_o be_v good_a land_n so_o if_o we_o know_v people_n to_o be_v well_o teach_v and_o yet_o yield_v little_a obedience_n in_o their_o life_n we_o may_v just_o suspect_v that_o their_o heart_n be_v not_o upright_o before_o god_n but_o if_o we_o see_v they_o reform_v their_o life_n according_a to_o the_o word_n avoid_v those_o sin_n which_o it_o forbid_v and_o practice_v those_o duty_n which_o it_o commend_v and_o that_o in_o a_o constant_a course_n of_o their_o conversation_n we_o may_v be_v assure_v that_o their_o heart_n be_v honest_a and_o good_a if_o therefore_o you_o will_v have_v other_o to_o think_v that_o you_o have_v honest_a and_o good_a heart_n show_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o word_n in_o your_o life_n the_o second_o special_a property_n in_o these_o hearer_n be_v their_o keep_n of_o the_o word_n they_o do_v not_o only_o receive_v it_o with_o their_o heart_n and_o lay_v it_o up_o in_o the_o bottom_n of_o they_o but_o likewise_o there_o they_o keep_v it_o fast_o they_o will_v not_o let_v it_o go_v locum_fw-la out_o thence_o nor_o suffer_v any_o to_o take_v it_o from_o they_o the_o original_a word_n as_o some_o have_v observe_v be_v very_o emphatical_a and_o import_v a_o keep_n with_o much_o labour_n and_o difficulty_n and_o so_o fit_o express_v the_o manner_n of_o their_o keep_n which_o be_v with_o strive_v and_o struggle_v against_o their_o own_o corruption_n against_o satan_n suggestion_n and_o against_o the_o world_n allurement_n though_o all_o conspire_v and_o join_v their_o force_n together_o yet_o do_v they_o keep_v it_o
so_o safe_a and_o sure_a as_o that_o they_o can_v wrest_v it_o from_o they_o and_o herein_o they_o also_o differ_v from_o all_o the_o former_a hearer_n the_o first_o sort_n lose_v it_o as_o soon_o as_o they_o receive_v it_o even_o while_o they_o be_v in_o hear_v the_o devil_n take_v it_o from_o they_o the_o second_o sort_n keep_v it_o a_o while_n but_o not_o long_o for_o they_o believe_v for_o a_o time_n they_o keep_v the_o word_n no_o long_o than_o they_o keep_v their_o faith_n though_o they_o keep_v both_o in_o time_n of_o peace_n yet_o they_o lose_v both_o in_o time_n of_o persecution_n the_o three_o sort_n keep_v the_o word_n yet_o not_o long_o when_o as_o afterward_o it_o be_v choke_v by_o care_n and_o pleasure_n it_o be_v take_v from_o they_o but_o these_o keep_v it_o for_o ever_o neither_o the_o devil_n by_o his_o suggestion_n nor_o other_o man_n by_o their_o persecution_n nor_o their_o own_o lust_n by_o their_o provocation_n can_v deprive_v they_o of_o the_o word_n such_o a_o hearer_n be_v the_o bless_a virgin_n the_o mother_n of_o christ_n she_o keep_v all_o her_o saviour_n saying_n in_o her_o 51._o heart_n she_o do_v not_o only_o lay_v they_o up_o but_o also_o keep_v they_o and_o not_o only_o in_o her_o head_n but_o also_o in_o her_o heart_n and_o not_o some_o only_a but_o all_o his_o word_n and_o such_o keeper_n be_v all_o profitable_a hearer_n for_o if_o the_o word_n enter_v into_o man_n heart_n and_o afterward_o go_v out_o again_o it_o will_v do_v they_o little_a or_o no_o good_a at_o all_o though_o the_o meat_n which_o a_o man_n eat_v be_v receive_v into_o his_o stomach_n yet_o unless_o it_o continue_v there_o for_o a_o time_n and_o be_v there_o digest_v it_o will_v not_o nourish_v and_o feed_v his_o body_n though_o seed_n be_v cast_v into_o the_o furrow_n yet_o unless_o it_o do_v there_o remain_v for_o a_o season_n to_o sprout_v and_o take_v root_a it_o will_v not_o yield_v any_o crop_n to_o the_o reaper_n even_o so_o though_o the_o word_n shall_v be_v receive_v into_o the_o heart_n yet_o unless_o it_o do_v there_o abide_v it_o can_v fructify_v in_o the_o life_n but_o if_o it_o be_v there_o safe_o keep_v it_o will_v bring_v forth_o plentiful_a increase_n and_o therefore_o christ_n say_v happy_a be_v 28._o they_o which_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o keep_v it_o yea_o he_o account_v they_o more_o happy_a for_o state_n of_o salvation_n so_o shall_v they_o continue_v therein_o for_o ever_o whereupon_o john_n say_v whosoever_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n sin_v 9_o not_o for_o his_o seed_n remain_v in_o he_o hearer_n which_o have_v their_o heart_n mollify_v but_o in_o part_n or_o have_v their_o heart_n fraught_v with_o worldly_a care_n and_o voluptuousness_n may_v receive_v and_o keep_v the_o word_n for_o a_o time_n and_o loose_v it_o afterward_o as_o you_o hear_v before_o but_o these_o who_o have_v honest_a and_o good_a heart_n shall_v keep_v it_o and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n this_o be_v a_o main_a difference_n betwixt_o they_o that_o the_o rest_n keep_v it_o for_o a_o time_n these_o keep_v it_o for_o ever_o if_o these_o hearer_n may_v afterward_o loose_v it_o as_o well_o as_o the_o rest_n and_o bring_v forth_o no_o fruit_n of_o it_o than_o be_v there_o no_o difference_n betwixt_o they_o and_o the_o former_a but_o certain_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n and_o therefore_o those_o who_o receive_v it_o and_o keep_v it_o not_o long_o receive_v it_o with_o bad_a heart_n those_o who_o receive_v it_o with_o good_a and_o honest_a heart_n shall_v keep_v it_o unto_o the_o end_n in_o this_o respect_n christ_n compare_v he_o that_o hear_v his_o word_n and_o do_v the_o same_o to_o a_o wise_a man_n which_o build_v his_o house_n upon_o a_o rock_n the_o 25._o rain_n fall_v the_o flood_n into_o any_o part_n of_o their_o heart_n but_o those_o who_o have_v heart_n partly_o soft_a and_o partly_o hard_a may_v receive_v the_o word_n and_o retain_v it_o for_o a_o time_n but_o will_v never_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o wherefore_o the_o holy_a ghost_n say_v in_o the_o psalm_n and_o it_o be_v apply_v by_o the_o apostle_n to_o the_o hearer_n 7._o of_o the_o gospel_n to_o day_n their_o corrupt_a affection_n which_o they_o can_v not_o bridle_v they_o differ_v from_o the_o second_o sort_n because_o they_o fall_v away_o in_o time_n of_o tribulation_n and_o persecution_n these_o fall_n away_o in_o time_n of_o peace_n and_o prosperity_n those_o be_v urge_v by_o external_a mean_n come_v from_o other_o these_o be_v draw_v away_o by_o internal_a mean_n proceed_v from_o themselves_o those_o be_v hinder_v in_o their_o perseverance_n and_o fruitfulness_n through_o the_o want_n of_o good_a these_o through_o the_o have_v of_o evil_n even_o sinful_a lust_n and_o bad_a affection_n in_o their_o heart_n which_o like_a thorn_n choke_v the_o word_n which_o they_o hear_v those_o renounce_v their_o profession_n these_o keep_v their_o profession_n and_o yet_o be_v be_v these_o affection_n to_o the_o hearer_n of_o god_n word_n you_o know_v that_o although_o the_o soil_n be_v reasonable_a good_a of_o itself_o yet_o if_o thorn_n grow_v among_o the_o corn_n they_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o ground_n to_o yield_v any_o good_a crop_n so_o if_o hearer_n have_v indifferent_a good_a mind_n of_o themselves_o especial_o if_o some_o froward_a affection_n be_v expel_v yet_o so_o long_o as_o those_o affection_n remain_v in_o
they_o they_o will_v hinder_v the_o grow_v of_o the_o word_n and_o therefore_o peter_n exhort_v we_o first_o to_o lay_v aside_o all_o maliciousness_n &_o all_o guile_n 2._o and_o dissimulation_n and_o envy_n and_o then_o as_o new_o bear_v babe_n to_o desire_v the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n that_o we_o may_v grow_v thereby_o and_o james_n bid_v we_o 21_o lay_v apart_o all_o filthiness_n many_o thing_n when_o with_o her_o sister_n mary_n she_o shall_v rather_o have_v hear_v christ_n doctrine_n those_o guest_n who_o be_v invite_v to_o the_o wedding_n feast_n make_v excuse_n 18._o that_o one_o have_v buy_v a_o farm_n and_o must_v needs_o go_v see_v it_o another_o have_v buy_v 5._o yoke_n of_o ox_n and_o must_v go_v prove_v they_o another_o have_v marry_v a_o wife_n and_o ground_n unfruitful_a some_o have_v their_o heart_n so_o exercise_v with_o think_v and_o plot_v of_o worldly_a matter_n that_o they_o can_v attend_v to_o the_o word_n deliver_v other_o have_v beat_v their_o brain_n and_o busy_v their_o head_n before_o fall_v to_o sleep_v when_o they_o shall_v hear_v other_o that_o be_v awake_a and_o listen_v have_v no_o love_n nor_o like_n of_o that_o which_o be_v teach_v the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n have_v so_o put_v their_o mouth_n out_o of_o taste_n as_o they_o can_v find_v no_o sweetness_n in_o the_o word_n other_o attend_v &_o seem_v to_o like_v all_o well_o for_o a_o time_n yet_o afterward_o the_o care_n of_o the_o world_n enter_v into_o their_o head_n and_o heart_n and_o drive_v the_o word_n out_o of_o they_o even_o as_o one_o nail_n drive_v out_o another_o there_o may_v be_v in_o they_o for_o a_o time_n some_o strive_v and_o struggle_v betwixt_o the_o world_n and_o the_o word_n but_o the_o world_n overcome_v in_o the_o end_n and_o make_v they_o no_o better_o then_o if_o they_o have_v never_o hear_v christ_n bad_a his_o disciple_n take_v heed_n to_o themselves_o least_o at_o any_o time_n their_o heart_n 34._o be_v oppress_v with_o surfeit_v and_o drunkenness_n and_o care_n of_o this_o life_n and_o lest_o the_o last_o day_n shall_v come_v on_o they_o at_o unaware_o because_o care_n of_o the_o world_n do_v oppress_v the_o heart_n as_o well_o as_o surfeit_v and_o drunkenness_n and_o make_v we_o unfit_a for_o his_o come_n to_o judgement_n our_o people_n be_v much_o oppress_v with_o worldly_a care_n they_o rise_v early_o and_o lie_v down_o late_o and_o eat_v the_o bread_n of_o carefulness_n they_o busy_v their_o head_n they_o beat_v their_o brain_n they_o weary_a their_o body_n they_o break_v their_o sleep_n they_o weaken_v their_o strength_n they_o hinder_v their_o health_n and_o shorten_v their_o life_n with_o cark_n and_o care_v toil_a and_o moil_a about_o worldly_a affair_n and_o this_o be_v one_o special_a cause_n why_o they_o hear_v so_o much_o and_o profit_n so_o little_a these_o then_o who_o will_v be_v profitable_a hearer_n must_v before_o and_o after_o their_o hear_n keep_v these_o care_n out_o of_o their_o heart_n let_v they_o remember_v the_o exhortation_n give_v by_o christ_n be_v not_o careful_a 25._o for_o your_o life_n what_o you_o shall_v eat_v nor_o what_o you_o shall_v drink_v nor_o for_o your_o body_n what_o raiment_n you_o shall_v put_v on_o be_v not_o the_o life_n more_o worth_a than_o meat_n and_o the_o body_n than_o raiment_n which_o of_o you_o by_o take_v of_o they_o as_o by_o all_o of_o they_o it_o be_v not_o impossible_a to_o find_v they_o all_o three_o in_o one_o &_o the_o same_o man_n a_o man_n may_v be_v much_o perplex_v with_o worldly_a care_n how_o to_o get_v and_o increase_v riches_n and_o when_o he_o have_v get_v they_o he_o may_v be_v deceive_v by_o they_o in_o think_v too_o high_o of_o they_o in_o love_v they_o too_o dear_o and_o trust_v too_o much_o unto_o they_o he_o may_v then_o also_o live_v in_o pleasure_n he_o may_v be_v careful_a to_o get_v riches_n and_o to_o increase_v they_o that_o so_o he_o may_v consume_v they_o on_o his_o own_o lust_n by_o reason_n of_o his_o worldly_a care_n and_o the_o deceitfulnes_n of_o his_o riches_n he_o may_v be_v spare_v and_o niggard-like_a in_o relieve_n of_o other_o yet_o in_o regard_n of_o voluptuousness_n he_o may_v spend_v much_o on_o himself_o that_o richman_n luke_n 12._o have_v much_o 19_o good_n lay_v up_o for_o himself_o for_o many_o year_n not_o any_o for_o other_o but_o all_o for_o himself_o and_o therefore_o he_o will_v live_v at_o ease_n eat_v drink_n and_o take_v his_o pastime_n and_o the_o rich_a glutton_n which_o will_v not_o 21._o give_v so_o much_o as_o the_o crumb_n that_o fall_v from_o his_o table_n to_o poor_a lazarus_n be_v give_v to_o pleasure_n &_o spend_v much_o on_o his_o own_o back_n &_o belly_n such_o man_n as_o these_o have_v many_o thorn_n grow_v in_o the_o field_n of_o their_o heart_n they_o have_v many_o impediment_n to_o hinder_v they_o in_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o word_n and_o therefore_o can_v be_v profitable_a hearer_n and_o diligent_a practiser_n of_o the_o word_n the_o more_o thorn_n grow_v in_o a_o swoon_n field_n the_o less_o corn_n be_v reap_v at_o harvest_n so_o of_o all_o carnal_a hearer_n these_o yield_v the_o least_o fruit_n yet_o be_v these_o three_o thing_n distinguish_v one_o from_o another_o as_o be_v show_v before_o be_v oftentimes_o sever_v in_o their_o subject_n one_o of_o they_o may_v be_v find_v in_o one_o man_n and_o not_o either_o of_o the_o other_o and_o one_o of_o the_o other_o may_v be_v find_v in_o another_o man_n and_o not_o that_o a_o man_n may_v be_v careful_a and_o yet_o poor_a a_o man_n may_v be_v rich_a and_o yet_o not_o give_v to_o pleasure_n and_o all_o of_o they_o have_v their_o special_a and_o several_a effect_n one_o hinder_v after_o one_o manner_n and_o another_o after_o another_o manner_n and_o therefore_o any_o one_o of_o these_o be_v able_a of_o itself_o to_o hinder_v the_o fruitfulness_n of_o the_o word_n you_o know_v there_o be_v many_o kind_n of_o thorn_n with_o we_o there_o be_v white_a thorn_n and_o black_a thorn_n hawthorne_n and_o slowthorne_n and_o the_o word_n in_o the_o original_n be_v take_v not_o only_o akantha_n for_o thorn_n but_o likewise_o for_o briar_n and_o bramble_n and_o any_o thing_n that_o have_v prick_v and_o therefore_o as_o one_o kind_a of_o thorn_n if_o there_o be_v many_o of_o that_o kind_a may_v as_o well_o hinder_v the_o fruitfulness_n of_o your_o field_n as_o many_o kind_n so_o one_o kind_n of_o corrupt_a affection_n in_o your_o heart_n may_v hinder_v the_o efficacy_n of_o the_o word_n as_o well_o as_o many_o and_o therefore_o as_o when_o you_o plough_v and_o sow_v your_o ground_n you_o rid_v up_o not_o only_o one_o kind_n of_o thorn_n and_o briar_n but_o likewise_o all_o of_o each_o kind_n so_o when_o you_o hear_v the_o word_n expel_v out_o of_o your_o heart_n not_o only_o all_o bad_a affection_n of_o one_o kind_n but_o likewise_o all_o bad_a affection_n of_o each_o kind_n it_o be_v lamentable_a to_o see_v how_o fond_o people_n deceive_v themselves_o herein_o many_o man_n do_v harbour_v one_o noisome_a lust_n one_o corrupt_a affection_n or_o other_o in_o their_o heart_n and_o because_o they_o keep_v out_o many_o other_o they_o hope_v all_o be_v well_o with_o 45._o they_o the_o covetous_a worldling_n condemn_v the_o voluptuous_a epicure_n and_o the_o voluptuous_a epicure_n condemn_v the_o greedy_a and_o miserable_a worldling_n the_o covetous_a man_n think_v that_o he_o be_v a_o good_a christian_a because_o he_o be_v not_o give_v to_o prodigal_a licentiousness_n and_o the_o voluptuous_a man_n will_v be_v esteem_v a_o good_a hearer_n because_o he_o abhor_v worldly_a care_n and_o miserable_a covetousness_n but_o let_v they_o both_o know_v that_o either_o of_o these_o two_o sinful_a lust_n be_v sufficient_a to_o condemn_v their_o soul_n and_o let_v they_o not_o purge_v their_o heart_n from_o the_o one_o alone_o but_o from_o both_o together_o if_o they_o will_v be_v fit_a soil_n for_o the_o lord_n seed_n the_o last_o thing_n to_o be_v observe_v in_o these_o hearer_n be_v the_o effect_n of_o their_o choke_n namely_o what_o be_v the_o issue_n and_o event_n that_o befall_v they_o when_o they_o be_v thus_o choke_v by_o those_o corrupt_a lust_n they_o bring_v forth_o no_o fruit_n though_o they_o do_v not_o fall_v away_o from_o their_o profession_n as_o those_o hearer_n mention_v in_o the_o former_a verse_n but_o still_o continue_v professor_n and_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n yet_o be_v they_o unfruitful_a in_o their_o profession_n the_o original_a word_n do_v proper_o signify_v that_o they_o do_v not_o bring_v 〈◊〉_d forth_o any_o full_a and_o perfect_a any_o ripe_a and_o true_o fruit_n as_o if_o they_o may_v bring_v forth_o some_o kind_n of_o fruit_n yet_o no_o good_a fruit_n no_o full_a corn_n nor_o profitable_a gain_n corn_n sow_v among_o thorn_n may_v yield_v some_o kind_n of_o fruit_n yet_o not_o such_o as_o will_v please_v the_o husbandman_n it_o will_v be_v a_o untimely_a fruit_n it_o will_v wither_v away_o before_o it_o be_v thorough_o feed_v and_o full_o ripe_a it_o will_v be_v very_o thin_a on_o the_o ground_n when_o it_o be_v reap_v it_o will_v prove_v nothing_o but_o short_a ear_n and_o small_a gain_n and_o when_o it_o be_v thresh_v nothing_o but_o light_a corn_n and_o unprofitable_a such_o be_v the_o obedience_n of_o those_o man_n which_o be_v give_v to_o covetousness_n and_o voluptuousness_n they_o may_v perform_v some_o outward_a duty_n yet_o not_o many_o only_o such_o as_o do_v not_o hinder_v they_o in_o their_o worldly_a profit_n nor_o abridge_v they_o of_o their_o carnal_a pleasure_n and_o those_o which_o they_o do_v perform_v be_v very_o imperfect_a neither_o acceptable_a to_o god_n nor_o comfortable_a to_o their_o own_o soul_n they_o be_v not_o such_o as_o god_n exact_v they_o do_v not_o proceed_v from_o such_o sincerity_n of_o the_o heart_n neither_o be_v they_o direct_v to_o that_o right_a end_n neither_o be_v they_o perform_v in_o such_o a_o holy_a manner_n as_o he_o require_v though_o they_o seem_v to_o begin_v well_o yet_o their_o inward_a lust_n do_v so_o hinder_v they_o that_o they_o can_v bring_v their_o action_n to_o a_o due_a perfection_n but_o wax_v weary_a of_o do_v well_o and_o either_o quite_o cease_v from_o their_o enterprise_n begin_v or_o else_o efaint_a much_o in_o their_o proceed_n before_o they_o bring_v any_o thing_n to_o a_o good_a end_n whence_o first_o we_o may_v take_v notice_n of_o the_o nature_n quality_n and_o manner_n of_o their_o obedience_n who_o heart_n be_v still_o possess_v with_o the_o care_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n they_o may_v perform_v many_o good_a duty_n yet_o fail_v in_o some_o main_a duty_n and_o yet_o those_o which_o they_o perform_v can_v please_v the_o lord_n we_o have_v pregnant_a example_n hereof_o in_o the_o scripture_n naaman_n the_o syrian_a be_v cure_v of_o his_o leprosy_n by_o the_o but_o the_o god_n of_o israel_n yet_o desire_v he_o to_o be_v tolerate_v in_o one_o point_n that_o when_o he_o go_v with_o his_o master_n into_o the_o house_n of_o rimmon_n and_o when_o 18._o his_o master_n lean_v on_o his_o hand_n and_o he_o do_v bow_n as_o his_o master_n and_o other_o do_v the_o lord_n will_v be_v merciful_a unto_o he_o therein_o though_o he_o mislike_v that_o idolatry_n in_o never_o have_v choose_v he_o to_o be_v one_o of_o the_o twelve_o he_o hear_v his_o sermon_n live_v a_o long_a time_n civil_o and_o preach_v the_o gospel_n to_o other_o yet_o because_o covetousness_n do_v still_o reign_v in_o his_o heart_n for_o money_n he_o betray_v his_o master_n that_o rich_a young_a man_n which_o come_v to_o christ_n to_o know_v the_o way_n to_o eternal_a life_n have_v so_o keep_v the_o commandment_n for_o outward_a act_n as_o christ_n love_v he_o 21._o yet_o because_o his_o corrupt_a affection_n be_v only_o keep_v under_o and_o not_o kill_v he_o leave_v christ_n and_o have_v rather_o break_v his_o commandment_n then_o leave_v his_o own_o wealth_n herod_n as_o you_o hear_v do_v many_o thing_n which_o john_n baptist_n teach_v yet_o because_o the_o word_n be_v not_o powerful_a in_o his_o heart_n to_o mortify_v his_o sinful_a lust_n he_o will_v not_o break_v off_o his_o incest_n nor_o put_v away_o his_o brother_n wife_n if_o you_o suffer_v the_o like_a affection_n to_o abide_v in_o your_o heart_n your_o obedience_n will_v be_v no_o better_o you_o see_v by_o experience_n that_o corn_n grow_v among_o thorn_n be_v neither_o so_o much_o nor_o so_o good_a as_o that_o which_o grow_v in_o other_o ground_n and_o that_o it_o may_v have_v be_v more_o and_o also_o better_a in_o the_o same_o ground_n if_o the_o thorn_n before_o the_o sow_v have_v be_v rid_v up_o a_o more_o excellent_a manner_n and_o therefore_o those_o who_o be_v nothing_o move_v nor_o comfort_v by_o the_o word_n be_v worse_o than_o some_o bad_a hearer_n and_o must_v not_o be_v reckon_v in_o the_o number_n of_o good_a hearer_n notwithstanding_o in_o this_o description_n of_o these_o good_a hearer_n we_o may_v perceive_v that_o in_o diverse_a other_o thing_n they_o differ_v much_o from_o
