also_o to_o the_o heart_n for_o the_o purge_n of_o it_o at_o the_o first_o and_o for_o the_o guide_n of_o it_o always_o afterward_o 2._o again_o the_o heart_n be_v the_o seat_n of_o the_o affection_n must_v needs_o receive_v and_o embrace_v it_o with_o their_o heart_n that_o so_o their_o heart_n love_v and_o like_n and_o believe_v it_o may_v set_v all_o their_o sense_n and_o all_o the_o part_n of_o their_o body_n on_o work_n to_o practice_v it_o 4._o last_o the_o heart_n be_v the_o safe_a place_n for_o it_o as_o swoon_v corn_n if_o it_o lie_v on_o the_o top_n of_o the_o furrow_n may_v easy_o be_v devour_v by_o the_o fowl_n of_o the_o air_n but_o if_o it_o be_v hide_v and_o cover_v be_v free_a from_o that_o danger_n so_o the_o word_n which_o thou_o hear_v if_o it_o go_v no_o further_o than_o thy_o ear_n or_o head_n it_o be_v easy_o take_v from_o thou_o but_o if_o it_o descend_v to_o the_o bottom_n of_o thy_o heart_n it_o may_v there_o be_v safe_o keep_v it_o be_v a_o heavenly_a treasure_n and_o therefore_o thou_o must_v imitate_v that_o man_n who_o find_v a_o treasure_n in_o the_o field_n do_v 44._o hide_v it_o and_o for_o joy_n thereof_o go_v and_o sell_v all_o that_o he_o have_v to_o buy_v that_o field_n though_o man_n will_v suffer_v their_o base_a stuff_n and_o wooden_a vessel_n to_o be_v more_o common_a and_o lie_v more_o open_a and_o remain_v in_o precious_a of_o great_a value_n and_o worth_n lay_v it_o up_o safe_o in_o the_o bottom_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o if_o this_o be_v a_o property_n of_o good_a hearer_n use_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n with_o their_o heart_n than_o those_o who_o bring_v their_o body_n to_o the_o church_n and_o leave_v their_o heart_n at_o home_n who_o draw_v near_o to_o god_n with_o their_o lip_n and_o with_o their_o ear_n when_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o he_o can_v be_v good_a hearer_n if_o thou_o will_v be_v of_o that_o number_n prepare_v thy_o heart_n before_o hand_n and_o while_o thou_o hear_v let_v not_o thy_o heart_n be_v think_v on_o any_o by-matter_n but_o only_o attend_v to_o that_o hear_v with_o thy_o heart_n as_o well_o as_o with_o thy_o ear_n and_o then_o shall_v thou_o be_v bless_v by_o thy_o hear_n 2._o again_o note_v hence_o more_o special_o the_o quality_n and_o disposition_n of_o their_o heart_n who_o hear_v profitable_o they_o hear_v with_o a_o honest_a and_o good_a heart_n it_o be_v not_o any_o kind_n of_o heart_n that_o will_v make_v your_o hear_n profitable_a it_o must_v be_v a_o honest_a and_o good_a heart_n though_o thou_o shall_v hear_v with_o thy_o heart_n as_o well_o as_o with_o thy_o ear_n yet_o unless_o it_o be_v a_o good_a heart_n it_o will_v little_o avail_v thou_o for_o in_o the_o goodness_n of_o the_o heart_n consist_v a_o main_a difference_n betwixt_o these_o hearer_n and_o some_o of_o the_o former_a those_o which_o be_v compare_v to_o stony_a ground_n do_v hear_v with_o their_o heart_n for_o they_o be_v say_v not_o only_o to_o hear_v but_o also_o to_o receive_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n yet_o be_v they_o not_o good_a and_o honest_a heart_n they_o be_v hard_a and_o stony_a and_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o word_n to_o take_v root_a deep_a enough_o and_o those_o that_o be_v resemble_v to_o thorny_a ground_n do_v hear_v with_o their_o heart_n yet_o be_v their_o heart_n not_o good_a they_o be_v full_a of_o worldly_a care_n and_o carnal_a delight_n which_o afterward_o choke_v the_o word_n but_o these_o receive_v it_o with_o good_a and_o honest_a heart_n agathe_v and_o therefore_o do_v both_o retain_v it_o and_o obey_v it_o in_o describe_v of_o the_o quality_n of_o this_o their_o hart_n christ_n here_o use_v two_o word_n which_o be_v of_o a_o near_a yet_o not_o of_o the_o same_o signification_n there_o be_v some_o difference_n ketwixt_n they_o the_o one_o proper_o signify_v fair_a beautiful_a seemly_a and_o comely_a the_o other_o signify_v good_a and_o excellent_a the_o one_o note_v the_o outward_a apparent_a quality_n the_o other_o express_v the_o inward_a nature_n and_o inherent_a property_n of_o the_o thing_n and_o so_o here_o by_o be_v locum_fw-la signify_v that_o the_o heart_n of_o these_o hearer_n be_v good_a each_o way_n both_o outward_o before_o man_n manifest_v itself_o to_o be_v good_a by_o open_a profession_n by_o abundance_n of_o fruit_n and_o by_o constant_a perseverance_n and_o also_o inward_o in_o itself_o and_o before_o god_n by_o a_o sincere_a sanctification_n and_o holy_a disposition_n and_o so_o their_o heart_n differ_v from_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o former_a hearer_n for_o though_o they_o in_o receyve_v the_o worde_n with_o joy_n in_o believe_v it_o and_o bring_v forth_o some_o fruit_n of_o it_o do_v make_v some_o fair_a show_n and_o give_v some_o outward_a sign_n of_o a_o good_a heart_n yet_o their_o heart_n be_v not_o effectual_o sanctify_v within_o and_o they_o make_v those_o fair_a show_n but_o for_o a_o time_n afterwards_o they_o revolt_a in_o time_n of_o tentation_n or_o fail_v in_o their_o fruit_n through_o worldly_a care_n and_o voluptuousness_n bewray_v the_o filthiness_n of_o their_o heart_n those_o than_o that_o will_v be_v good_a hearer_n must_v have_v good_a heart_n both_o way_n both_o inward_o in_o their_o own_o nature_n and_o inclination_n as_o also_o outward_o before_o man_n by_o the_o fruit_n and_o testimony_n as_o be_v the_o heart_n so_o will_v the_o hear_n be_v good_a meet_a will_v not_o nourish_v that_o man_n body_n who_o have_v a_o bad_a stomach_n that_o can_v well_o
obey_v it_o if_o your_o heart_n be_v set_v on_o wealth_n it_o will_v so_o deceive_v you_o that_o no_o sin_n can_v be_v gainful_a but_o you_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o practice_v it_o and_o no_o duty_n bring_v any_o damage_n but_o you_o shall_v neglect_v it_o be_v not_o the_o desire_n of_o money_n the_o root_n of_o all_o evil_a what_o 10._o make_v some_o to_o lie_v in_o their_o bargayn_n some_o to_o swear_v vain_o &_o false_o some_o to_o use_v fraud_n and_o cozenage_n some_o to_o oppress_v and_o wrong_v other_o but_o a_o immoderate_a desire_n of_o riches_n this_o be_v the_o very_a spawn_n of_o all_o sin_n in_o unjust_a deal_n therefore_o learn_v to_o moderate_v it_o do_v not_o christ_n say_v that_o he_o who_o love_v 26._o father_n or_o mother_n son_n or_o daughter_n wife_n or_o child_n or_o his_o own_o life_n more_o than_o i_o be_v unworthy_a of_o i_o he_o can_v be_v my_o disciple_n and_o be_v he_o worthy_a of_o he_o or_o can_v be_v his_o disciple_n who_o love_v land_n &_o live_a wealth_n and_o riches_n better_a than_o he_o do_v not_o he_o say_v if_o 23._o any_o man_n love_v i_o he_o will_v keep_v my_o word_n those_o than_o that_o transgress_v his_o word_n for_o their_o own_o advantage_n and_o sin_n against_o he_o to_o get_v to_o keep_v or_o to_o increase_v their_o riches_n do_v they_o not_o love_v their_o riches_n better_a than_o he_o 2._o be_v content_a to_o employ_v your_o riches_n as_o the_o word_n direct_v you_o you_o be_v but_o 2_o steward_n of_o your_o riches_n the_o lord_n be_v the_o owner_n and_o will_v one_o day_n call_v you_o to_o give_v a_o account_n for_o your_o stewardship_n you_o must_v not_o therefore_o use_v they_o as_o you_o list_v but_o as_o he_o will_v how_o he_o will_v have_v you_o to_o use_v they_o he_o teach_v you_o by_o his_o word_n wherefore_o make_v the_o word_n your_o counsellor_n in_o all_o your_o deal_n do_v not_o get_v your_o wealth_n by_o any_o other_o mean_v then_o the_o word_n allow_v do_v not_o keep_v it_o any_o long_a riches_n and_o more_o precious_a jewel_n than_o all_o the_o wealth_n of_o the_o world_n know_v that_o godliness_n as_o the_o apostle_n teach_v be_v great_a gain_n 9_o be_v of_o paul_n mind_n who_o esteem_v of_o they_o thou_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o wealth_n of_o the_o world_n to_o hinder_v thou_o of_o they_o if_o thou_o can_v not_o enjoy_v both_o together_o thou_o will_v rather_o forgo_v wealth_n then_o the_o word_n the_o want_n of_o this_o due_a estimation_n cause_v riches_n to_o be_v a_o hindrance_n to_o many_o they_o think_v too_o high_o of_o worldly_a wealth_n but_o too_o base_o of_o god_n word_n and_o his_o grace_n and_o therefore_o have_v rather_o get_v and_o keep_v their_o wealth_n then_o obey_v the_o word_n and_o increase_v in_o grace_n 4._o pray_v earnest_o unto_o god_n that_o he_o will_v give_v thou_o grace_n to_o use_v riches_n aright_o even_o for_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o name_n for_o the_o good_a of_o thy_o own_o soul_n and_o for_o the_o benefit_n of_o other_o thou_o abound_v in_o wealth_n yet_o be_v not_o proud_a but_o be_v as_o lowly_a and_o humble_a as_o if_o thou_o live_v in_o want_n for_o god_n resist_v the_o proud_a and_o give_v 17._o grace_n to_o the_o humble_a paul_n will_v not_o have_v command_v timothy_n to_o charge_v rich_a man_n that_o they_o be_v not_o high_a mind_v unless_o there_o be_v some_o danger_n that_o way_n they_o be_v in_o and_o behaviour_n than_o his_o outward_a estate_n if_o thou_o be_v poor_a be_v not_o dismay_v if_o rich_a be_v not_o proud_a last_o if_o riches_n deceive_v man_n and_o 2._o hinder_v they_o in_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o word_n let_v not_o the_o poor_a sort_n always_o follow_v the_o example_n of_o rich_a man_n their_o riches_n do_v often_o choke_v the_o word_n which_o they_o hear_v so_o as_o it_o take_v no_o effect_n in_o their_o heart_n nor_o yield_v any_o fruit_n in_o their_o life_n if_o then_o the_o poor_a sort_n will_v do_v as_o they_o do_v they_o will_v prove_v unprofitable_a hearer_n in_o worldly_a matter_n the_o poor_a sort_n will_v follow_v they_o no_o further_o than_o serve_v for_o their_o present_a profit_n if_o the_o rich_a shall_v sow_v among_o thorn_n and_o reap_v a_o course_n crop_n of_o corn_n at_o harvest_n through_o ill_a husbandry_n the_o poor_a will_v not_o be_v draw_v by_o their_o example_n to_o use_v the_o like_a ill_a husbandry_n nor_o be_v content_a to_o reap_v the_o like_a crop_n but_o whatsoever_o the_o other_o do_v they_o will_v be_v careful_a to_o dress_v their_o ground_n after_o the_o best_a manner_n and_o seek_v to_o make_v the_o best_a profit_n of_o that_o little_a land_n which_o they_o occupy_v and_o why_o then_o shall_v they_o imitate_v their_o ill_a husbandry_n in_o spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a thing_n if_o in_o christ_n time_n and_o the_o adostle_n time_n the_o poor_a have_v be_v lead_v by_o the_o example_n of_o the_o rich_a very_o few_o have_v embrace_v the_o gospel_n many_o of_o they_o do_v receive_v it_o though_o most_o of_o the_o rich_a do_v reject_v it_o consider_v this_o that_o their_o example_n will_v not_o excuse_v you_o before_o god_n your_o mean_a estate_n have_v least_o impediment_n the_o wise_a man_n be_v our_o hope_n or_o joy_n or_o crown_v of_o rejoice_v be_v not_o even_o you_v it_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n at_o his_o come_n when_o we_o sow_v good_a seed_n in_o the_o lord_n field_n the_o envious_a man_n sow_v tare_n we_o must_v not_o look_v that_o in_o a_o populous_a congregation_n all_o shall_v be_v good_a and_o true_a hearer_n if_o some_o only_o be_v good_a and_o profitable_a hearer_n let_v we_o praise_v god_n for_o they_o and_o pray_v unto_o he_o daily_o to_o increase_v their_o number_n but_o to_o come_v near_o to_o the_o property_n of_o these_o hearer_n in_o particular_a in_o the_o description_n of_o they_o and_o by_o compare_v they_o with_o the_o former_a hearer_n we_o may_v easy_o perceive_v that_o in_o some_o thing_n they_o do_v agree_v with_o they_o in_o some_o thing_n they_o differ_v from_o they_o and_o do_v much_o excel_v they_o there_o be_v some_o commendable_a thing_n in_o diverse_a of_o the_o former_a hearer_n and_o will_v have_v wrought_v good_a in_o they_o if_o they_o have_v be_v well_o use_v in_o these_o thing_n do_v these_o good_a hearer_n agree_v with_o they_o they_o have_v the_o selfsame_o thing_n though_o in_o a_o better_a manner_n and_o with_o better_a use_n 1._o they_o agree_v with_o they_o in_o that_o they_o hear_v as_o well_o as_o the_o rest_n all_o the_o person_n speak_v of_o in_o this_o parable_n be_v hearer_n both_o good_a and_o bad_a and_o they_o all_o hear_v one_o and_o the_o same_o doctrine_n though_o not_o after_o one_o and_o the_o same_o manner_n nor_o with_o the_o like_a efficacy_n and_o fruit_n and_o therefore_o those_o which_o refuse_v to_o hear_v either_o through_o error_n as_o our_o recusant_n or_o through_o contempt_n and_o negligence_n as_o some_o careless_a and_o carnal_a people_n be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v the_o ground_n here_o mention_v as_o that_o they_o be_v worse_o than_o the_o bad_a ground_n speak_v of_o before_o there_o can_v be_v any_o goodness_n in_o their_o heart_n nor_o yet_o in_o their_o life_n can_v any_o field_n yield_v a_o good_a crop_n of_o corn_n at_o harvest_n which_o be_v not_o sow_v at_o the_o seed_n time_n they_o be_v worse_o than_o many_o reprobate_n have_v be_v and_o be_v how_o then_o can_v they_o look_v to_o be_v as_o good_a as_o the_o elect_n be_v and_o shall_v be_v 2._o they_o agree_v in_o the_o understanding_n of_o the_o word_n for_o it_o be_v say_v in_o matthew_n he_o that_o receive_v seed_n in_o good_a ground_n 19_o be_v he_o that_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o understandeth_v it_o and_o although_o the_o first_o sort_n of_o bad_a hearer_n be_v say_v to_o hear_v and_o not_o understand_v yet_o the_o other_o two_o sort_n be_v insinuate_v to_o have_v understand_v for_o how_o can_v they_o receive_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n unless_o they_o understand_v it_o how_o can_v care_n of_o the_o world_n the_o deceitfulness_n of_o riches_n and_o voluptuous_a live_n choke_v the_o word_n after_o it_o be_v hear_v unless_o it_o have_v be_v understand_v so_o that_o as_o the_o understanding_n of_o the_o word_n be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o make_v you_o good_a hearer_n so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o want_n of_o understanding_n declare_v you_o to_o be_v bad_a hearer_n all_o good_a hearer_n understand_v the_o word_n though_o not_o only_o they_o good_a hearer_n must_v practice_v that_o which_o be_v teach_v they_o but_o how_o can_v they_o practice_v that_o which_o they_o understand_v not_o 3._o they_o agree_v in_o their_o affection_n to_o the_o word_n those_o that_o be_v as_o stony_a ground_n receive_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n so_o also_o do_v these_o good_a hearer_n though_o the_o thing_n itself_o be_v not_o express_o mention_v the_o gospel_n be_v glad_a tiding_n and_o rejoice_v the_o heart_n of_o all_o that_o embrace_v it_o there_o be_v no_o commendable_a property_n in_o the_o reprobate_n and_o unprofitable_a hearer_n but_o it_o be_v find_v in_o the_o elect_a and_o profitable_a hearer_n and_o that_o in_o a_o more_o excellent_a manner_n and_o therefore_o those_o who_o be_v nothing_o move_v nor_o comfort_v by_o the_o word_n be_v worse_o than_o some_o bad_a hearer_n and_o must_v not_o be_v reckon_v in_o the_o number_n of_o good_a hearer_n notwithstanding_o in_o this_o description_n of_o these_o good_a hearer_n we_o may_v perceive_v that_o in_o diverse_a other_o thing_n they_o differ_v much_o from_o all_o the_o former_a hearer_n and_o therein_o do_v great_o exceed_v and_o excel_v they_o all_o they_o be_v describe_v by_o three_o property_n and_o by_o they_o all_o they_o differ_v from_o the_o rest_n 1._o by_o the_o manner_n of_o receive_v the_o word_n they_o receive_v it_o with_o a_o honest_a and_o good_a heart_n 2._o by_o the_o manner_n of_o retain_v it_o they_o keep_v it_o 3._o by_o the_o manner_n of_o practise_v it_o they_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n and_o that_o with_o patience_n and_o plenty_n touch_v the_o first_o property_n 2._o thing_n may_v be_v note_v the_o one_o more_o genenerall_a and_o that_o be_v the_o instrument_n of_o hear_v it_o be_v with_o the_o heart_n the_o other_o more_o special_a and_o that_o be_v the_o quality_n and_o disposition_n of_o their_o heart_n it_o be_v a_o honest_a and_o good_a heart_n 1._o concern_v the_o former_a we_o may_v hence_o observe_v that_o those_o who_o will_v be_v profitable_a hearer_n of_o god_n most_o holy_a word_n must_v hear_v it_o with_o their_o heart_n not_o only_o with_o their_o ear_n to_o harken_v unto_o the_o sound_n of_o it_o while_o it_o be_v utter_v nor_o only_a with_o their_o head_n to_o understand_v that_o gather_v provision_n for_o winter_n so_o must_v we_o at_o one_o time_n learn_v instruction_n which_o may_v stand_v we_o in_o stead_n at_o another_o time_n in_o time_n of_o peace_n we_o must_v man_n heart_n be_v like_o a_o break_a pitcher_n that_o will_v hold_v no_o water_n or_o like_v to_o sive_n which_o hold_v water_n no_o long_o than_o they_o be_v keep_v in_o the_o water_n there_o be_v some_o who_o be_v desirous_a to_o hear_v much_o and_o yet_o they_o keep_v little_a they_o forget_v as_o fast_o as_o they_o learn_v as_o it_o be_v better_a to_o eat_v less_o meat_n and_o keep_v it_o in_o the_o stomach_n and_o digest_v it_o then_o to_o eat_v much_o and_o present_o to_o cast_v it_o up_o again_o so_o be_v it_o better_a to_o hear_v less_o and_o keep_v it_o well_o then_o to_o hear_v much_o and_o present_o forget_v it_o no_o more_o shall_v profit_v we_o then_o that_o we_o keep_v what_o must_v we_o do_v that_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o keep_v it_o quâ—st_n 1._o empty_a your_o
