there_o be_v in_o the_o evidence_n which_o persuade_v we_o to_o believe_v so_o much_o will_v be_v want_v to_o our_o love_n desire_n labour_n adventure_n and_o especial_o to_o our_o joy_n therefore_o i_o think_v it_o necessary_a to_o speak_v a_o little_a and_o but_o a_o little_a to_o fortify_v the_o believer_n against_o temptation_n and_o to_o confirm_v his_o faith_n in_o the_o certain_a truth_n truth_n this_o be_v but_o a_o unsavoury_a and_o loose_a apprehension_n but_o when_o it_o be_v apprehend_v as_o good_a as_o well_o as_o true_a this_o be_v a_o fast_a and_o delightful_a apprehend_n as_o a_o man_n be_v not_o so_o prone_a to_o live_v according_a to_o the_o truth_n he_o know_v except_o it_o do_v deep_o affect_v he_o so_o neither_o do_v his_o soul_n enjoy_v its_o sweetness_n except_o speculation_n do_v pass_v to_o affection_n the_o understanding_n be_v not_o the_o whole_a soul_n and_o therefore_o can_v do_v the_o whole_a work_n as_o god_n have_v make_v several_a part_n in_o man_n to_o perform_v their_o several_a office_n for_o his_o nourish_a and_o life_n so_o have_v he_o ordain_v the_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o perform_v their_o several_a office_n for_o his_o spiritual_a life_n the_o stomach_n must_v chy_fw-mi lisy_n and_o prepare_v for_o the_o liver_n the_o liver_n and_o spleen_n must_v sanguify_v and_o prepare_v for_o the_o heart_n and_o brain_n and_o these_o must_v beget_v the_o vital_a and_o animal_n spirit_n etc._n etc._n so_o the_o understanding_n must_v take_v in_o truth_n and_o prepare_v they_o for_o the_o will_n and_o it_o must_v receive_v they_o and_o commend_v they_o to_o the_o affection_n the_o best_a digestion_n be_v in_o the_o bottom_n of_o the_o stomach_n the_o affection_n be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o bottom_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o
circumstance_n though_o to_o some_o they_o may_v seem_v small_a thing_n do_v much_o conduce_v to_o our_o hindrance_n or_o our_o help_n 23._o christ_n himself_o think_v it_o not_o vain_a to_o direct_v in_o this_o circumstance_n of_o private_a duty_n mat._n 6.4_o 6_o 18_o if_o in_o private_a prayer_n we_o must_v shut_v our_o door_n upon_o we_o that_o our_o father_n may_v hear_v we_o in_o secret_a so_o be_v it_o also_o requisite_a in_o this_o meditation_n how_o oft_o do_v christ_n himself_o depart_v to_o some_o mountain_n or_o wilderness_n or_o other_o solitary_a place_n for_o occasional_a be_v the_o society_n of_o godly_a man_n that_o thou_o may_v a_o while_n enjoy_v the_o society_n of_o christ_n if_o a_o student_n can_v study_v in_o a_o crowd_n who_o exercise_v only_o his_o invention_n and_o memory_n much_o less_o when_o thou_o must_v exercise_v all_o the_o power_n of_o thy_o soul_n and_o that_o upon_o a_o object_n so_o far_o above_o nature_n when_o thy_o eye_n be_v fill_v with_o the_o person_n and_o action_n of_o man_n and_o thy_o ear_n with_o their_o discourse_n its_o hard_a then_o to_o have_v thy_o thought_n and_o affection_n free_a for_o this_o duty_n though_o i_o will_v not_o persuade_v thou_o to_o pythagoras_n his_o cave_n nor_o to_o the_o hermit_n wilderness_n nor_o to_o the_o monk_n cell_n yet_o i_o will_v advise_v thou_o to_o frequent_a solitariness_n that_o thou_o may_v sometime_o confer_v with_o christ_n and_o with_o thyself_o as_o well_o as_o with_o other_o we_o be_v flee_v so_o far_o from_o the_o solitude_n of_o superstition_n that_o the_o love_n of_o the_o father_n and_o the_o joy_n of_o the_o spirit_n may_v enter_v at_o our_o thought_n and_o revive_v our_o affection_n and_o overflow_v our_o soul_n so_o that_o as_o christ_n meditation_n be_v the_o sluice_n or_o floodgate_n to_o let_v in_o hell_n to_o overflow_v his_o affection_n so_o our_o meditation_n shall_v be_v the_o sluice_n to_o let_v in_o heaven_n into_o our_o affection_n 9_o sect_n ix_o so_o much_o concern_v the_o time_n and_o place_n of_o this_o duty_n i_o be_o next_o to_o advise_v thou_o somewhat_o concern_v the_o preparation_n of_o thy_o heart_n the_o success_n of_o the_o work_n do_v much_o depend_v on_o the_o frame_n of_o thy_o heart_n when_o man_n heart_n have_v nothing_o in_o it_o that_o may_v grieve_v the_o spirit_n than_o be_v it_o the_o the_o heart_n grow_v sinful_a and_o too_o loathsome_a a_o dungeon_n for_o god_n to_o delight_v in_o and_o be_v this_o soul_n reduce_v to_o its_o former_a innocency_n god_n will_v quick_o return_v to_o his_o former_a habitation_n yea_o so_o far_o as_o it_o be_v renew_v and_o repair_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o purge_v of_o its_o lust_n and_o beautify_v with_o his_o image_n the_o lord_n will_v yet_o acknowledge_v it_o his_o own_o and_o christ_n will_v manifest_v himself_o unto_o it_o and_o the_o spirit_n will_v take_v it_o for_o his_o temple_n and_o residence_n so_o far_o as_o the_o soul_n be_v all_o i_o be_o sure_a thou_o can_v not_o sure_o if_o thou_o once_o address_v thyself_o to_o the_o business_n indeed_o thou_o will_v be_v as_o the_o covetous_a man_n at_o the_o heap_n of_o gold_n that_o when_o he_o may_v take_v as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v carry_v away_o lament_v that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o bear_v no_o more_o so_o when_o thou_o shall_v get_v into_o the_o mount_n in_o contemplation_n thou_o will_v find_v there_o as_o much_o of_o god_n and_o glory_n as_o thy_o narrow_a heart_n be_v able_a to_o contain_v and_o almost_o nothing_o to_o hinder_v thy_o full_a possession_n but_o only_o the_o uncapableness_n of_o thy_o own_o spirit_n o_o then_o will_v thou_o think_v that_o this_o understanding_n be_v large_a that_o i_o may_v conceive_v more_o that_o these_o affection_n be_v wide_a to_o contain_v more_o it_o be_v more_o my_o own_o unfitness_n than_o any_o thing_n else_o which_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o even_o this_o place_n be_v not_o my_o heaven_n god_n be_v in_o this_o place_n and_o i_o know_v it_o not_o this_o mount_n be_v full_a of_o the_o angel_n of_o god_n but_o my_o eye_n be_v shut_v and_o can_v see_v they_o o_o the_o word_n of_o love_n that_o christ_n have_v to_o speak_v o_o the_o wonder_n of_o love_n that_o he_o have_v to_o show_v but_o alas_o i_o can_v bear_v they_o yet_o heaven_n be_v here_o ready_a at_o hand_n for_o i_o but_o my_o feel_v the_o smart_n as_o peter_n preach_v reproof_n to_o his_o hearer_n till_o they_o be_v prick_v to_o the_o heart_n and_o cry_v out_o and_o as_o a_o father_n or_o master_n will_v chide_v the_o
