IV. 1 The second declareth the power of a king 14 The third the force of women 33 and of truth 41 The third is judged to be wisest 47 and obtaineth letters of the king to build Jerusalem 58 He praiseth God and sheweth his brethren what he had done THen the second that had spoken of the strength of the king began to say 2 O ye men do not men excel in strength that ‖ Or have the command bear rule over sea and land and all things in them 3 But yet the king is more mighty for he is lord of all these things and hath dominion over them and whatsoever he commandeth them they do 4 If he bid them make war the one against the other they do it if he send them out against the enemies they go and break down mountains walls and towers 5 They slay and are slain and transgress not the kings commandment if they get the victory they bring all to the king as well the spoil as all things else 6 Likewise for those that are no souldiers and have not to do with wars but use husbandry when they have reaped again that which they had sown they bring it to the king and compel one another to pay tribute unto the king 7 And yet he is but one man if he command to kill they kill if he command to spare they spare 8 If he command to smite they smite if he command to make desolate they make desolate if he command to build they build 9 If he command to cut down they cut down if he command to plant they plant 10 So all his people and his armies obey him furthermore he lieth down he eateth and drinketh and taketh his rest 11 And these keep watch round about him neither ‖ Or can may any one depart and do his own business neither disobey they him in any thing 12 O ye men how should not the king be mightiest when in such sort he is obeyed And he held his tongue 13 ¶ Then the third who had spoken of women and of the truth this was Zorobabel began to speak 14 O ye men it is not the great king nor the multitude of men neither is it wine that †Heb. is of force excelleth who is it then that ruleth them or hath the lordship over them are they not women 15 Women have born the king and all the people that bear rule by sea and land 16 Even of them came they and they nourished them up that planted the vineyards from whence the wine cometh 17 These also make garments for men these bring glory unto men and without women cannot men be 18 Yea and if men have gathered together gold and silver or any other goodly thing do they not love a woman which is comely in favour and beauty 19 And letting all those things go do they not gape and even with open mouth fix their eyes fast on her and have not all men more desire unto her then unto silver or gold or any goodly thing whatsoever 20 A man leaveth his own father that brought him up and his own countrey and cleaveth unto his wife 21 He sticks not to spend his life with his wife and remembreth neither father nor mother nor countrey 22 By this also you must know that women have dominion over you do ye not labour and toil and give and bring all to the woman 23 Yea a man taketh his sword and goeth his way to rob and to steal to sail upon the sea and upon rivers 24 And looketh upon a lion and goeth in the darkness and when he hath stoln spoiled and robbed he bringeth it to his love 25 Wherefore a man loveth his wife better then father or mother 26 Yea many there be that have ‖ Or grown desperate run out of their wits for women and become servants for their sakes 27 Many also have perished have erred and sinned for women 28 And now do you not beleeve me is not the king great in his power do not all regions fear to touch him 29 Yet did I see him and Apame the kings concubine the daughter of the admirable ‖ Jos antiq l. 11. c. 4. VIII 1 At the opening of the seventh seal 2 seven angels had seven trumpets given them 6 Four of them sound their trumpets and great plagues follow 3 Another angel putteth incense to the prayers of the saints on the golden altar ANd when he had opened the seventh seal there was silence in heaven about the space of half an hour 2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God and to them were given seven trumpets 3 And another angel came and stood at the alter having a golden censer and there was given unto him much incense that he should ‖ Or add it to the prayâ—â—â— offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne 4 And the smoke of the incense which came with the prayers of the saints ascended up before God out of the angels hand 5 And the angel took the censer and filled it with fire of the altar and cast it into the earth and there were voices and thundrings and lightnings and an earthquake 6 And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound 7 The first angel sounded and there followed hail and fire mingled with bloud and they were cast upon the earth and the third part of trees was burnt up and all green grass was burnt up 8 And the second angel sounded and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea and the third part of the sea became bloud 9 And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea and had life died and the third part of the ships were destroyed 10 And the third angel sounded and there fell a great star from heaven burning as it were a lamp and it fell upon the third part of the rivers and upon the fountains of waters 11 And the name of the star is called Woormwood and the third part of the waters became woormwood and many men died of the waters because they were made bitter 12 And the fourth angel sounded and the third part of the sun was smitten and the third part of the moon and the third part of the stars so as the third part of them was darkned and the day shone not for a third part of it and the night likewise 13 And I behold and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven saying with a loud voice Wo wo wo to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels which are yet to sound CHAP. IX 1 At the sounding of the fifth angel a star falleth from heaven to whom is given the key of the bottomless pit 2 He openeth the pit and there come forth locusts like scorpions 12 The first wo past 13 The sixth trumpet soundeth 14 Four angels are let loose that were bound ANd the fifth angel sounded and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit 2 And he opened the bottomless pit and there arose a smoke out of the pit as the smoke of a great furnace and the sun and the air were darkned by reason of the smoke of the pit 3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth and unto them was given power as the sâ—orpions of the earth have power 4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth neither any green thing neither any tree but onely those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads 5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them but that they should be tormented five moneths and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion when he striketh a man 6 And in those days * Isa 2 1â— Chap. 6.16 shall men seek death and shall not finde it and shall desire to die and death shall flee from them 7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battel and on their heads were as it were crowns like Gold and their faces were as the faces of men 8 And they had hair as the hair of women and their teeth were as the teeth of lions 9 And they had breastplates as it were breastplates of iron and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battel 10 And they had tails like unto scorpions and there were stings in their tails and their power was to hurt men five moneths 11 And they had a king over them which is the angel of the bottomless pit whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon but in the Greek tongue hath his name ‖ That is to say a destroyer Apollyon 12 One wo is past and behold there come two woes more hereafter 13 And the sixth angel sounded and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God 14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates 15 And the four angels were loosed which were prepared ‖ Or at for an hour and a day and a moneth and a year for to slay the third part of men 16 And the number of the army of the hors-men were two hundred thousand thousand and I heard the number of them 17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision and them that sat on them having breast-plates of fire and of jacinct and brimstone and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone 18 By these three was the third part of men killed by the fire and by the smoke and by the brimstone which issued out of their mouths 19 For their power is in their mouth and in their tails for their tails were like unto serpents and had heads and with them they do hurt 20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands that they should not worship devils * Psal 115.4 and 135. â—5 and idols of gold and silver and brass and stone and of wood which neither can see nor hear nor walk 21 Neither repented they of their murders nor of their sorceries nor of their fornication nor of their thefts CHAP. XI 1 Divers kings overcome at the waters of Merom 10 Hazar is taken and burnt 16 All the countrey taken by Joshua 21 The Anakims cut off ANd it came to pass when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things that he sent to Jobab king of Madon and to the king of Shimron and to the king of Achshaph 2 And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains and of the plains south of Cinneroth and in the valley and in the borders of Dor on the west 3 And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west and to the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Jebusite in the mountains and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh 4 And they went out they and all their hosts with them much people even as the sand that is upon the sea-shore in multitude with horses and chariots very many 5 And when all these kings were †Heb. assembled by appointment met together they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom to fight against Israel 6 ¶ And the LORD said unto Joshua Be not afraid because of them for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel thou shalt hough their horses and burn their chariots with fire 7 So Joshua came and all the people of war with him against them by the waters of Merom suddenly and they fell upon them 8 And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Israel who smote them and chased them unto ‖ Or Zidon-raâ—bab great Zidon and unto ‖ Or salt-pits †Heb. burnings of waters Misrephothmaim and unto the valley of Mizpeh east-ward and they smote them until they left them none remaining 9 And Joshua did unto them as the LORD bade him he houghed their horses and burnt their chariots with fire 10 ¶ And Joshua at that time turned back and took Hazor and smote the king thereof with the sword for Hazor beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms 11 And they smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword utterly destroying them there was not †Heb. any breath any left to breathe and he burnt Hazor with fire 12 And all the cities of those kings and all the kings of them did Joshua take and smote them with the edge of the sword and he utterly destroyed them * Numb 23.52 Deut. 7.2 and 20.16.17 as Moses the servant of the LORD commanded 13 But as for the cities that stood still †Heb. on their beap in their strength Israel burned none of them save Hazor onely that did Joshua burn 14 And all the spoil of these cities and the cattel the children of Israel took for a prey unto themselves but every man they smote with the edge of the sword until they had destroyed them neither left they any to breathe 15 ¶ * Exod. 34.11 As the LORD commanded Moses his servant so * Deut. 7.2 did Moses command Joshua and so did Joshua †Heb. be removed nothing he left nothing undone of all that the LORD commanded Moses 16 So Joshua took all that land the hills and all the south-countrey and all the land of Goshen and the valley and the plain and the mountain of Israel and the valley of the same 17 Even from ‖ Or the smooth mountain the mount Halak that goeth up to Seir even unto Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon under mount Hermon and all their kings he took and smote them and slew them 18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings 19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel save * Chap. 2.3 the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon all other they took in battel 20 For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battel that he might destroy them utterly and that they might have no favour but that he might destroy them as the LORD commanded Moses 21 ¶ And at that time came Joshua and cut off the Anakims from the mountains from Hebron from Debir from Anab and from all the mountains of Judah and from all the mountains of Israel Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities 22 There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel onely in Gaza in Gath and in Ashdod there remained 23 So Joshua took the whole land according to all that the LORD said unto Moses and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel * Numb 26.53 according to their diviâ—ions by their tribes And the land rested from war CHAP. 49 The children of Israel give an inheritance to Joshua ANd the second lot came forth to Simeon even for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of Judah 2 And they had in their inheritance Beer-sheba and Sheba and Moladah 3 And Hazar-shual and Balah and Azem 4 And Eltolad and Bethul and Hormah 5 And Ziklag and Beth-marcaboth and Hazar-susah 6 And Beth-lebaoth and Sharuhen thirteen cities and their villages 7 Ain Remmon and Ether and Ashan four cities their villages 8 And all the villages that were round about these cities to Baalath-beer Ramath of the south This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families 9 Out of the portion of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon for the part of the children of Judah was too much for them therefore the children of Simeon had their inheritance within the inheritance of them 10 ¶ And the third lot came up for the children of Zebulun according to their families and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid 11 And their border went up toward the sea and Maralah and reached to Dabasheth and reached to the river that is before Jokneam 12 And turned from Sarid east-ward toward the sun-rising unto the border of Chisloth-tabor and then goeth out to Daberath and goeth up to Japhia 13 And from thence passeth on along on the east to Gittah-hepher to Ittah-kazin and goeth out to Remmon ‖ Or whichtâ— drawn methoar to Neah 14 And the border compasseth it on the north-side to Hannathon and the out-goings thereof are in the valley of Jiphthah-el 15 And Kattath and Nahallal and Shimron and Idalah and Bethlehem twelve cities with their villages 16 This is the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families these cities with their villages 17 ¶ And the fourth lot came out to Issachar for the children of Issachar according to their families 18 And their border was toward Jezreel and Chesulloth Shunem 19 And Hapharaim and Shihon and Anaharath 20 And Rabbith and Kishion and Abez 21 And Remeth and Engannim and En-haddah and Beth-pazzer 22 And the coast reacheth to Tabor and Shahazimah and Beth-shemesh and the out-goings of their border were at Jordan sixteen cities with their villages 23 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families the cities and their villages 24 ¶ And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families 25 And their border was Helkath and Hali and Beten Achshaph 26 And Alammelech and Amad and Misheal and reacheth to Carmel west-ward and to Shihor-libnath 27 And turneth toward the sun-rising to Beth-dagon and reacheth to Zebulun and to the valley of Jiphthah-el toward the north-side of Beth-emek and Neiel and goeth out to Cabul on the left hand 28 And Hebron and Rehob and Hammon and Kanah even unto great Zidon 29 And then the coast turneth to Ramah and to the strong city †Heb. Tzor Tyre and the coast turneth to Hosah and the out-goings thereof are at the sea from the coast to Achzib 30 Ummah also and Aphek and Rehob twenty and two cities with their villages 31 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families these cities with their villages 32 ¶ The sixth lot came out to the children of Naphtali even for the children of Naphtali according to their families 33 And their coast was from Heleph from Allon to Zaanannim and Adami Nekeb and Jabneel unto Lakum and the out goings thereof were at Jordan 34 And then the coast turneth west-ward to Aznoth-tabor and goeth out from thence to Hukkok and reacheth to Zebulun on the south-side and reacheth to Asher on the west-side and to Judah upon Jordan toward the sun-rising 35 And the fenced cities are Ziddim Zer and Hammath Rakkath and Cinnereth 36 And Adamah and Ramah and Hazor 37 And Kedesh and Edrei and En-hazor 38 And Iron and Migdal-el Horem and Beth-anath and Beth-shemesh nineteen cities with their villages 39 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Naphtali according to their families the cities and their villages 40 ¶ And the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families 41 And the coast of their inheritance was Zorah and Eshtaol and Ir-shemesh 42 And Shaalabbin and Ajalon and Jethlah 43 And Elon and Thimnathah and Ekron 44 And Eltekeh and Gibbethon and Baalath 45 And Jehud and Bene-berak and Gath-rimmon 46 And Me-jarkon and Rakkon with the border ‖ Or over against before ‖ Or Joppa Act. 9.36 Japho 47 And the coast of the children of Dan went out too little for them therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem and took it and smote it with the edge of the sword possessed it dwelt therein and called Leshem * Judg. 18 29. Dan after the name of Dan their father 48 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families these cities with their villages 49 ¶ When they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them 50 According to the word of the LORD they gave him the city which he asked even * Chap. 24.30 Timnath-serah in mount Ephraim and he built the city and dwelt therein 51 * Numb 3â— 17 These are the inheritances which Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel divided for an inheritance by lot in Shiâ—oh before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation so they made an end of dividing the countrey CHAP. XX. 1 God commandeth 7 and the children of Israel appoint the six cities of refuge THe LORD also spake unto Jeshua saying 2 Speak to the children of Israel saying * Ex. 21.13 Num. 35.6 11 14. Deut. 19.2 Appoint out for you cities of refuge whereof I spake unto you by the hand or Moses 3 That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of bloud 4 And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entring of the gate of the city and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city they shall take him into the city unto them and give him a place that he may dwell among them 5 And if the avenger of bloud pursue after him then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand because he smote his neighbour unwittingly and hated him not before time 6 And he shall dwell in that city until he
his son Abishua his son 51 Bukki his son Uzzi his son Zerahiah his son 52 Meraioth his son Amariah his son Ahitub his son 53 Zadok his son Ahimaaz his son 54 ¶ Now these are their dwelling-places throughout their castles in their coasts of the sons of Aaron of the families of the Kohathites for theirs was the lot 55 And they gave them Hebron in the land of Judah and the suburbs thereof round about it 56 But the fiâ—lds of the city and the villages thereof they gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh 57 And to the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of Judah namely Hebron the city of refuge and Libnah with her suburbs and Jattir and Eshtemoa with their suburbs 58 And ‖ Or Holou Jesh 21.15 Hilen with her suburbs Debir with her suburbs 59 And ‖ Or Am oâ—h 21.16 Ashan with her suburbs and Beth-shemesh with her suburbs 60 And out of the tribe of Benjamin Geba with her suburbs and ‖ Or Almon Josh 21.18 Alemeth with her suburbs and Anathoth with her suburbs All their cities throughout their families were thirteen cities 61 And unto the sons of Kohath which were left of the family of that tribe were cities given out of the half-tribe namely cut of the half-tribe of Manasseh * Josh 21.5 by lot ten cities 62 And to the sons of Gershom throughout their families out of the tribe of Issachar and out of the tribe of Asher and out of the tribe of Naphtali and out oâ— the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan thirteen cities 63 Unto the sons of Merari were given by lot throughout their families out of the tribe of Reuben and out of the tribe of Gad and out of the tribe of Zebulun * Josh 11.7 34. twelve cities 64 And the children of Israel gave to the Levites these cities with their suburbs 65 And they gave by lot out of the tribe of the children of Judah and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon and out of the tribe of the children of Benjamin these cities which are called by their names 66 And the residue of the families of the sons of Kohath had cities of their coasts out of the tribe of Ephraim 67 * Josh 21.21 â—nd they gave unto them of the cities of refuge Shechem in mount Ephraim with her suburbs they gave also Gezer with her suburbs 68 And Jokmeam with her suburbs and Beth-horon with her suburbs 69 And Aijalon with her suburbs and Gath-rimmon with her suburbs 70 And out of the half-tribe of Manasseh Aner with her suburbs and Bileam with her suburbs for the family of the remnant of the sons of Kohath 71 Unto the sons of Gershom were given out of the family of the half-tribe of Manasseh Golan in Bashan with her suburbs and Ashtaroth with her suburbs 72 And out of the tribe of Issachar Kedesh with her suburbs Daberath with her suburbs 73 And Ramoth with her suburbs and Anem with her suburbs 74 And out of the tribe of Asher Mashal with her suburbs and Abdon with her suburbs 75 And Hukok with her suburbs and Rehob with her suburbs 76 And out of the tribe of Naphtali Kedesh in Galilee with her suburbs and Hammon with her suburbs and Kirjathaim with her suburbs 77 Unto the rest of the children of Merari were given out of the tribe of Zebulun Rimmon with her suburbs Tabor with her suburbs 78 And on the other side Jordan by Jericho on the east-side of Jordan were given them out of the tribe of Reuben Bezer in the wilderness with her suburbs and Jahzah with her suburbs 79 Kedemoth also with her suburbs and Mephaath with her suburbs 80 And out of the tribe of Gad Ramoth in Gilead with her suburbs and Mahanaim with her suburbs 81 And Heshbon with her suburbs and Jazer with her suburbs CHAP. VII 1 Abaz being troubled with fear of Rezin and Pekah is comforted by Isaiah 10 Abaz having liberty to choose a siene and reâ—using it hath for a siene Christ promised 17 His judgement is prophesied to come by Assyria ANd it came to pass in the days of * 2 King 16.5 Ahaz the son of Jotham the son of Uzziah king of Judah that Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah king of Israel went up towards Jerusalem to war against it but could not prevail against it 2 And it was told the house of David saying Syria †Heb. resteth on Ephraim is confederate with Ephraim And his heart was moved and the heart of his people as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind 3 Then said the LORD unto Isaiah Go forth now to meet Ahaz thou and ‖ That is The remnant shall return Shear jashub thy son at the end of the * 2 King 18.17 conduit of the upper pool in the ‖ Or causey-way high-way of the fullers field 4 And say unto him Take heed and be quiet fear not †Heb. let not thy â—eart be tender neither be faint-hearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria and of the son of Remaliah 5 Because Syria â—phraim and the son of Remaliah have taken evil counsel against thee saying 6 Let us go up against Judah and ‖ Or waken vex it and let us make a breach therein for us and set a king in the midst of it even the son of Tabeal 7 Thus saith the Lord GOD It shall not stand neither shall it come to pass 8 For the head of Syria is Damascus and the head of Damascus is Rezin and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken †Heb. from a people that it be not a people 9 And the head of Ephraim is Samaria and the head of Samaria is Remaliahs son ‖ Or Do ye not beleever it is because ye are not slable If ye will not beleeve surely ye shall not be established 10 ¶ †Heb. VIII 1 In Maâ—â—â—â—st alalâ—â— hash hazâ—â—e prophesieth that Syria and Israel shall be suâ—â—ate 〈…〉 â—â—a 3 Judaâ— likewise for their infidelity 9 Gods judcemâ—â—â—â—â— shall be unrest stable 11 Comfort shall be to them that â—ear God 19 â—reat aâ—flictions to â—â—â—laters MOreover the LORD said unto me Take thee a great roll and write in it with a mans pen concerning †Heb. In â—â—aking spâ—â—â— to the spâ—â—â— be 〈◊〉 the pres Or make speed c. Maher-shalal-hash-baz 2 And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah 3 And I †Heb. approaâ—hes unto went unto the prophetess and she conceived and bare a son then said the LORD to me Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz 4 For before the childe shall have knowledge to cry My father and my mother ‖ Or he that is before the king of Assyria shall take away the riches c. the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria 5 ¶ The LORD spake also unto me again saying 6 Forsomuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly and rejoyce in Rezâ—n and Remaliahs son 7 Now therefore behold the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river strong and many even the king of Assyria and all his glory and he shall come up over all his chanels and go over all his banks 8 And he shall pass through Judah he shall overflow and go over he shall reach even to the neck and †Heb. the â—ulâ—ess of the breaâ—th of thy land shall be the stretchings out of his wings the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land O Immaâ—el 9 ¶ Associate your selves O ye people ‖ Or yet and ye shall be broken in pieces and give ear all ye of far countreys gird your selves and ye shall be broken in pieces gird your selves and ye shall be broken in pieces 10 Take counsel together and it shall come to nought speak the word and it shall not stand for God is with us 11 ¶

XI 1 He seeth in his dream an eagle coming out of the sea 37 and a lion out of a wood talking to the eagle THen saw I a dream and behold there came up from the sea an eagle which had twelve feathered wings and three heads 2 And I saw and behold she spread her wings over all the earth and all the winds of the air blew on her and were gathered together 3 And I beheld and out of her feathers there grew other contrary feathers and they became little feathers and small 4 But her heads were at rest the head in the midst was greater then the other yet rested †Lat. sa it with the residue 5 Moreover I beheld and so the eagle flew with her feathers and reigned upon earth and over them that dwelt therein 6 And I saw that all things under heaven were subject unto her and no man spake against her no not one creature upon earth 7 And I beheld and so the eagle rose upon her talons and spake to her feathers saying 8 Watch not all at once sleep every one in his own place and watch by course 9 But set the heads be preserved for the last 10 And I beheld and so the voice went not out of her heads but from the midst of her body 11 And I numbred her contrary feathers and behold there were eight of them 12 And I looked and behold on the right side there arose one feather and reigned over all the earth 13 And so it was that when it reigned the end of it came and the place thereof appeared no more so the next following stood up and reigned and had a great time 14 And it hapned that when it reigned the end of it came also like as the first so that it appeared no more 15 Then came there a voice unto it and said 16 Hear thou that hast born rule over the earth so long this I say unto thee before thou beginnest to appear no more 17 There shall none after thee attain unto thy time neither unto the half thereof 18 Then arose the third and reigned as the other before and appeared no more also 19 So went it with all the residue one after another as that every one reigned and then appeared no more 20 Then I beheld and so in process of time the feathers that followed stood up upon the right side that they might rule also and some of them ruled but within a whise they appeared no more 21 For some of them were set up but ruled not 22 After this I looked and behold the twelve feathers appeared no more nor the two little feathers 23 And there was no more upon the eagles body but three heads that rested and six little wings 24 Then saw I also that two little feathers divided themselves from the six and remained under the head that was upon the right side for the four continued in their place 25 And I beheld and so the feathers that were under the wing thought to set up themselves and to have the rule 26 And I beheld and so there was one set up but shortly it appeared no more 27 And the second was sooner away then the first 28 And I beheld and so the two that remained thought also in themselves to reign 29 And when they so thought behold there awaked one of the heads that were at rest namely it that was in the midst for that was greater then the two other heads 30 And then I saw that the two other heads were joyned with it 31 And behold the head was turned with them that were with it and did eat up the two feathers under the wing that would have reigned 32 But this head put the whole earth in fear and bare rule in it over all those that dwelt upon the earth with much oppression and it had the governance of the world more then all the wings that had been 33 And after this I beheld and so the head that was in the midst suddenly appeared no more like as the wings 34 But there remained the two heads which also in like sort ruled upon the earth and over those that dwelt therein 35 And I beheld and so the head upon the right side devoured it that was upon the left side 36 Then I heard a voice which said unto me Look before thee and consider the thing that thou seest 37 And I beheld and so as it were a roaring lion chased out of the wood and I saw that he sent out a mans voice unto the eagle and said 38 Hear thou I will talk with thee and the Highest shall say unto thee 39 Art not thou it that remainest of the four beasts whom I made to reign in my world that the end of their times might come through them 40 And the fourth came and over came all the beasts that were past and had power over the world with great fearfulness and over the whole compass of the earth with much wicked oppression and so long time dwelt he upon the earth with deceit 41 For the earth hast thou not judged with truth 42 For thou hast afflicted the meek thou hast hurt the peaceable thou hast loved liars and destroyed the dwellings of them that brought forth fruit and hast cast down the walls of such as did thee no harm 43 Therefore is thy wrongful dealing come up unto the Highest and thy pride unto the Mighty 44 The Highest also hath looked upon the proud times and behold they are ended and his abominations are fulfilled 45 And therefore appear no more thou eagle nor thy horrible wings nor thy wicked feathers nor thy malicious heads nor thy hurtful claws nor all thy vain body 46 That all the earth may be refreshed and may return being delivered from thy violence and that she may hope for the judgment and mercy of him that made her CHAP. XII 1 The eacle which be saw is destroyed 10 The vision is interpreted 37 He is bid to write his visions 39 and to fast that he may see more 46 He doth comfort those that were grieved for his absence ANd it came to pass whiles the lion spake these words unto the eagle I saw 2 And behold the head that remained and the four wings appeared no more and the two went unto it and set themselves up to reign and their kingdom was small and full of uproar 3 And I saw and behold they appeared no more and the whole body of the eagle was burnt so that the earth was in great fear then awaked I out of the trouble and trance of my minde and from great fear and said unto my spirit 4 Lo this hast thou done unto me in that thou searchest out the ways of the Highest 5 Lo yet am I weary in my minde and very weak in
