he_o than_o be_v christ_n not_o rise_v if_o christ_n have_v not_o be_v not_o rise_v say_v we_o there_o be_v not_o will_v not_o be_v a_o resurrection_n to_o the_o same_o purpose_n both_o he_o and_o we_o both_o of_o we_o make_v christ_n rise_v the_o cause_n the_o ground_n of_o we_o if_o he_o than_o we_o if_o not_o he_o not_o we_o neither_o our_o ground_n the_o same_o and_o the_o inference_n the_o same_o too_o for_o whether_o we_o say_v if_o there_o be_v no_o resurrection_n christ_n be_v not_o rise_v or_o if_o christ_n be_v not_o rise_v there_o be_v no_o resurrection_n we_o affirm_v both_o christ_n rise_v and_o our_o own_o and_o if_o either_o be_v false_a we_o be_v find_v false_a witness_n both_o nay_o all_o not_o st._n paul_n only_o who_o see_v he_o last_o but_o those_o also_o that_o see_v he_o first_o but_o cephas_n also_o and_o the_o twelve_o but_o five_o hundred_o brethren_n at_o a_o clap_n who_o see_v he_o all_o at_o once_o st._n james_n too_o and_o all_o the_o apostle_n who_o be_v vain_a but_o that_o perhaps_o be_v little_a in_o the_o world_n account_n who_o can_v peradventure_o willing_o spare_v both_o preacher_n and_o preach_v too_o nay_o but_o your_o faith_n be_v also_o vain_a your_o hope_n be_v vain_a you_o be_v yet_o in_o your_o sin_n and_o when_o you_o die_v you_o perish_v and_o miserable_a you_o be_v both_o alive_a and_o dead_a miserable_a deceiver_n we_o to_o preach_v miserable_o deceive_v you_o to_o trust_v a_o saviour_n who_o can_v not_o save_v himself_o but_o be_v dead_a and_o perish_v miserable_a both_o you_o and_o we_o to_o continue_v in_o a_o religion_n so_o groundless_a so_o unprofitable_a so_o troublesome_a so_o uncomfortable_a so_o hopeless_a whence_o little_a good_a be_v to_o be_v expect_v here_o and_o less_o hereafter_o as_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o hope_n in_o christ_n but_o only_o here_o but_o the_o comfort_n be_v the_o text_n be_v but_o a_o supposition_n what_o will_v become_v of_o we_o if_o our_o hope_n be_v only_o here_o now_o a_o mere_a supposition_n as_o it_o infer_v a_o necessary_a consequence_n upon_o the_o supposal_n so_o be_v but_o a_o mere_a supposition_n it_o as_o evident_o prove_v a_o real_a truth_n contrary_a to_o the_o supposal_n if_o in_o this_o life_n only_o we_o have_v hope_n suppose_v that_o so_o it_o be_v not_o true_o though_o true_o so_o it_o may_v be_v and_o we_o be_v most_o miserable_a say_v in_o effect_n that_o so_o we_o be_v not_o though_o upon_o the_o supposal_n so_o it_o will_v be_v so_o that_o by_o this_o we_o have_v two_o general_a part_n to_o handle_v in_o the_o text_n 1._o what_o our_o hope_n may_v be_v and_o what_o then_o may_v be_v the_o issue_n it_o may_v be_v only_o in_o this_o life_n such_o hope_n there_o be_v and_o then_o the_o issue_n will_v be_v misery_n then_o 2._o what_o our_o hope_n be_v and_o what_o therefore_o the_o success_n it_o be_v not_o in_o this_o life_n therefore_o in_o the_o other_o or_o not_o in_o this_o life_n only_o then_o in_o both_o a_o double_a hope_n a_o last_a and_o everlasting_a hope_n and_o then_o the_o effect_v sure_a will_v be_v good_a if_o the_o other_o end_n in_o misery_n happiness_n must_v be_v the_o close_a of_o this_o the_o first_o of_o these_o be_v true_a only_a upon_o supposal_n the_o second_o true_a without_o it_o the_o first_o the_o apostle_n only_o suppose_v to_o prove_v the_o absurdity_n of_o deny_v a_o resurrection_n or_o our_o hope_n in_o christ_n concern_v it_o the_o second_o he_o true_o mean_v that_o the_o christian_n hope_v in_o christ_n be_v not_o only_o here_o and_o he_o be_v therefore_o the_o most_o happy_a of_o the_o world_n because_o it_o be_v not_o though_o if_o it_o be_v he_o of_o all_o be_v the_o most_o desperate_o miserable_a the_o sum_n must_v be_v to_o teach_v we_o 1._o where_o not_o to_o place_v our_o hope_n and_o 2._o where_o to_o place_n it_o 3_o what_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o a_o ill_a place_v hope_n and_o 4._o what_o of_o that_o which_o be_v right_o set_v by_o both_o show_v we_o even_o the_o necessity_n of_o a_o resurrection_n and_o of_o a_o faithful_a expectation_n of_o it_o and_o two_o kind_n of_o hope_n now_o with_o their_o several_a effect_n shall_v divide_v the_o text_n a_o false_a one_o and_o a_o true_a one_o i._o a_o false_a hope_n in_o christ_n in_o this_o life_n only_o and_o its_o effect_n misery_n misery_n both_o in_o this_o life_n and_o in_o the_o other_o most_o miserable_a of_o all_o man_n most_o miserable_a then_o in_o both_o life_n to_o be_v sure_a ii_o a_o true_a hope_n not_o in_o this_o life_n only_o with_o its_o effect_n happiness_n double_a happiness_n here_o and_o hereafter_o both_o that_o also_o not_o in_o this_o life_n only_o for_o if_o the_o other_o make_v its_o owner_n the_o most_o miserable_a this_o then_o by_o the_o law_n of_o contrary_n make_v most_o happy_a in_o this_o world_n as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o other_o though_o there_o most_o because_o there_o be_v most_o yet_o here_o too_o because_o here_o be_v some_o the_o first_o hope_n and_o its_o effect_n more_o plain_o express_v the_o second_o and_o its_o effect_n as_o necessary_o imply_v both_o of_o they_o together_o the_o full_a content_n of_o the_o text._n i_o shall_v for_o once_o begin_v with_o the_o false_a hope_n because_o the_o apostle_n purpose_v here_o seem_v more_o especial_o to_o be_v to_o beat_v down_o that_o which_o once_o do_v a_o few_o word_n and_o a_o little_a time_n will_v serve_v for_o the_o other_o and_o as_o the_o apostle_n here_o do_v but_o only_o intimate_v it_o so_o it_o shall_v serve_v we_o anon_o but_o to_o touch_v it_o lest_o we_o too_o much_o transgress_v the_o bound_n both_o of_o text_n and_o time_n to_o search_v then_o thorough_o into_o the_o vanity_n and_o misery_n of_o a_o hope_n that_o reach_v short_a of_o heaven_n we_o shall_v consider_v these_o four_o particular_n 1._o that_o such_o a_o hope_n there_o be_v a_o false_a hope_n in_o christ._n that_o 2._o that_o which_o be_v in_o he_o in_o this_o life_n only_o be_v such_o a_o one_o that_o 3._o the_o effect_n of_o it_o be_v misery_n all_o those_o that_o have_v it_o miserable_a they_o that_o have_v hope_n in_o christ_n in_o this_o life_n only_o miserable_a they_o yet_o 4._o of_o those_o some_o more_o miserable_a than_o other_o some_o most_o miserable_a we_o of_o all_o we_o apostle_n we_o the_o minister_n we_o the_o preacher_n of_o it_o most_o miserable_a of_o all_o of_o all_o the_o rest_n if_o in_o this_o life_n only_o we_o have_v hope_n we_o of_o all_o etc._n etc._n that_o a_o false_a hope_n there_o be_v even_o in_o he_o general_n who_o be_v the_o hope_n of_o all_o the_o end_n of_o the_o earth_n be_v i_o will_v we_o can_v not_o say_v but_o a_o false_a belief_n there_o be_v in_o he_o nay_o many_o false_a one_o therefore_o a_o false_a hope_n too_o yea_o many_o such_o for_o all_o hope_n presuppose_v a_o belief_n and_o such_o as_o our_o belief_n such_o be_v our_o hope_n also_o we_o can_v easy_o peradventure_o bear_v it_o be_v that_o hope_n only_o false_a which_o be_v in_o thing_n below_o in_o thing_n transitory_a why_o they_o deceive_v
day_n by_o the_o course_n of_o holy_a church_n to_o wish_v you_o to_o look_v up_o and_o lift_v up_o your_o head_n to_o see_v the_o son_n of_o man_n your_o redeemer_n in_o his_o second_o come_v come_v this_o last_o come_n there_o be_v in_o the_o apostle_n time_n and_o there_o be_v still_o in_o we_o man_n who_o love_v to_o scare_v the_o people_n with_o prophecy_n and_o dream_n of_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n as_o if_o this_o then_o already_o be_v at_o hand_n such_o as_o will_v define_v the_o year_n and_o day_n as_o if_o they_o have_v late_o drop_v out_o of_o god_n council_n chamber_n but_o
