and_o in_o the_o whole_a 14._o chapter_n from_o the_o begin_n to_o the_o end_n thereof_o question_n what_o be_v the_o comfort_v contain_v herein_o answer_n first_o in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o 13._o manner_n of_o communion_n that_o be_v what_o have_v you_o learn_v concern_v this_o point_n question_n answer_n i_o have_v be_v teach_v that_o our_o communion_n with_o our_o saviour_n christ_n consist_v in_o these_o four_o thing_n first_o in_o our_o partake_n of_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o suffering_n and_o obedience_n to_o god_n for_o us._n second_o in_o our_o partake_n of_o christ_n himself_o in_o either_o nature_n of_o his_o person_n as_o be_v both_o god_n and_o man_n the_o head_n of_o his_o church_n three_o in_o our_o partake_n of_o the_o virtue_n and_o efficacy_n of_o the_o same_o his_o divine_a person_n and_o of_o all_o that_o he_o have_v wrought_v and_o suffer_v for_o we_o in_o the_o same_o four_o in_o our_o partake_n of_o his_o dignity_n in_o that_o through_o his_o grace_n god_n have_v adopt_v we_o to_o be_v his_o child_n and_o make_v we_o all_o king_n and_o priest_n unto_o himself_o proof_n explication_n and_o proof_n touch_v the_o first_o of_o these_o point_n of_o our_o communion_n with_o our_o saviour_n christ_n read_v rom._n 5.19_o by_o the_o obedience_n of_o one_o many_o be_v make_v righteous_a and_o ephes_n 1.7_o we_o have_v our_o redemption_n by_o he_o through_o his_o blood_n that_o be_v we_o be_v by_o his_o death_n ransom_v from_o that_o most_o miserable_a captivity_n &_o thraldom_n wherein_o we_o be_v through_o sin_n under_o the_o wrath_n second_o point_n this_o we_o must_v always_o remember_v that_o our_o partake_n of_o either_o nature_n of_o the_o divine_a person_n of_o our_o saviour_n god_n &_o man_n must_v be_v understand_v according_a to_o the_o communicable_a property_n of_o either_o nature_n for_o albeit_o the_o divine_a nature_n be_v in_o we_o though_o in_o deed_n not_o essential_o according_a to_o the_o heresy_n of_o the_o manichy_n but_o only_o by_o the_o energetical_a grace_n or_o effectual_a operation_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o such_o sense_n as_o it_o be_v say_v 2._o pet._n 1_o 4_o that_o we_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n and_o 1._o cor._n 1.30_o that_o we_o be_v of_o god_n in_o christ_n and_o 2._o ep._n 5.17_o that_o he_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n be_v a_o new_a creature_n and_o in_o he_o by_o spiritual_a apprehension_n and_o obedience_n unto_o he_o nevertheless_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o perpetual_a &_o most_o near_o personal_a union_n of_o the_o humane_a nature_n of_o our_o saviour_n with_o the_o
all_o one_o member_n where_o be_v the_o body_n but_o now_o there_o be_v many_o member_n yet_o but_o one_o body_n so_o then_o none_o can_v resist_v or_o detract_v from_o this_o point_n of_o the_o apostle_n doctrine_n but_o they_o shall_v by_o and_o by_o discover_v themselves_o to_o be_v even_o fighter_n against_o god_n and_o against_o that_o very_a light_n of_o nature_n from_o the_o which_o this_o similitude_n be_v take_v and_o beside_o what_o a_o folly_n be_v it_o for_o any_o to_o be_v wayward_a or_o envious_a &c_n &c_n see_v hereby_o such_o as_o forsake_v the_o communion_n of_o saint_n such_o as_o hold_v faithful_o the_o communion_n of_o saint_n all_o thing_n be_v they_o whether_o it_o be_v paul_n or_o apollo_n or_o cephas_n or_o the_o world_n or_o life_n or_o death_n whether_o they_o be_v thing_n present_a or_o thing_n to_o come_v all_o be_v they_o and_o they_o christ_n and_o christ_n god_n and_o see_v god_n will_v dispose_v of_o his_o grace_n to_o who_o and_o in_o what_o measure_n he_o think_v good_a as_o it_o be_v meet_v he_o shall_v what_o matter_v it_o in_o effect_n whether_o we_o or_o other_o have_v this_o or_o that_o special_a gift_n &_o grace_n more_o fit_a either_o for_o the_o common_a edification_n of_o the_o church_n or_o to_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o or_o that_o more_o commendable_a service_n in_o some_o more_o particular_a respect_n so_o that_o god_n be_v glorify_v and_o the_o church_n have_v the_o benefit_n this_o be_v the_o scope_n which_o every_o one_o ought_v to_o aim_v at_o and_o if_o this_o be_v obtain_v what_o reason_n may_v any_o have_v why_o he_o shall_v not_o rejoice_v and_o be_v glad_a of_o it_o by_o whosoever_o it_o be_v bring_v to_o pass_v as_o well_o as_o if_o he_o himself_o have_v be_v the_o instrument_n of_o it_o answerable_a to_o that_o of_o the_o same_o apostle_n 1._o cor._n 15.11_o whether_o it_o be_v i_o or_o they_o sow_v preach_v and_o so_o have_v you_o believe_v read_v also_o phi._n chap._n 1.18_o thus_o much_o concern_v the_o evil_a of_o frowardness_n and_o envy_n in_o the_o inferior_a member_n of_o the_o church_n now_o in_o the_o second_o place_n touch_v the_o discovery_n and_o reproof_n of_o the_o noisomeness_n of_o pride_n and_o also_o of_o contempt_n the_o companion_n or_o attendant_n upon_o pride_n in_o those_o that_o have_v great_a gift_n and_o be_v in_o high_a place_n &_o office_n i_o speak_v of_o such_o as_o have_v not_o there_o withal_o that_o singular_a grace_n of_o god_n to_o walk_v humble_o before_o he_o the_o apostle_n discover_v and_o reprove_v it_o from_o the_o light_n of_o the_o former_a similitude_n of_o the_o natural_a body_n as_o it_o follow_v verse_n 21_o &c_n &c_n to_o the_o 28._o verse_n in_o that_o he_o reason_v from_o that_o necessity_n which_o the_o superior_a and_o more_o excellent_a member_n of_o the_o body_n have_v of_o the_o inferior_a to_o show_v from_o thence_o the_o like_a necessity_n which_o the_o principal_a member_n of_o the_o church_n have_v of_o those_o which_o be_v in_o the_o low_a place_n or_o degree_n for_o say_v the_o apostle_n even_o as_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o natural_a body_n can_v say_v to_o the_o hand_n i_o have_v no_o need_n of_o thou_o nor_o the_o head_n again_o to_o the_o foot_n i_o have_v no_o need_n of_o you_o for_o god_n have_v dispose_v of_o the_o body_n in_o such_o sort_n that_o there_o be_v no_o one_o member_n which_o stand_v not_o in_o need_n of_o another_o so_o likewise_o it_o be_v in_o the_o mystical_a body_n of_o the_o church_n of_o god_n no_o christian_n of_o the_o rare_a gift_n among_o the_o rest_n no_o not_o the_o pastor_n which_o be_v as_o the_o eye_n to_o watch_v over_o &_o to_o direct_v the_o rest_n can_v with_o any_o good_a reason_n despise_v or_o withdraw_v his_o love_a affection_n or_o help_a hand_n from_o the_o weak_a and_o poor_a of_o the_o brethren_n nay_o rather_o he_o shall_v find_v himself_o at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o in_o this_o or_o that_o thing_n to_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o his_o help_n and_o if_o not_o otherwise_o yet_o of_o his_o prayer_n howsoever_o it_o be_v whether_o they_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o they_o or_o no_o this_o be_v the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n that_o the_o strong_a and_o wise_a must_v be_v the_o servant_n of_o the_o weak_a and_o less_o instruct_v christian_n or_o else_o he_o shall_v by_o his_o pride_n and_o contempt_n provoke_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n with_o you_o through_o our_o mutual_a faith_n both_o you_o and_o i_o and_o again_o 1._o cor._n 9.19_o though_o i_o be_v free_a from_o all_o man_n yet_o have_v i_o make_v myself_o servant_n unto_o without_o law_n as_o pertain_v to_o god_n but_o in_o the_o law_n through_o christ_n that_o i_o may_v win_v they_o that_o be_v without_o the_o law_n to_o the_o weak_a i_o become_v as_o weak_a that_o i_o may_v win_v the_o weak_a i_o be_o make_v all_o thing_n to_o all_o man_n that_o i_o may_v by_o all_o mean_n save_o some_o and_o this_o say_v he_o i_o do_v for_o the_o gospel_n sake_n that_o i_o may_v be_v partaker_n thereof_o with_o you_o and_o again_o ch_n 10.32_o 33._o give_v no_o offence_n neither_o to_o the_o jew_n nor_o to_o the_o grecian_n nor_o to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n even_o 16.6.7_o etc._n etc._n the_o greatness_n of_o this_o comfort_n of_o god_n fatherly_a encouragement_n may_v be_v some_o thing_n familiar_o discern_v of_o we_o from_o the_o similitude_n of_o a_o love_a natural_a father_n who_o speech_n must_v needs_o be_v comfortable_a to_o his_o dutiful_a child_n when_o he_o shall_v bid_v he_o be_v careful_a for_o nothing_o but_o to_o follow_v his_o book_n insomuch_o as_o he_o be_v mind_v to_o bring_v he_o up_o in_o learning_n and_o therefore_o promise_v he_o to_o provide_v for_o he_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v meet_v so_o as_o he_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o take_v any_o care_n for_o they_o nevertheless_o this_o comfort_n of_o the_o natural_a child_n be_v infinite_o inferior_a to_o that_o comfort_n which_o the_o child_n of_o god_n may_v take_v from_o the_o body_n into_o the_o grave_n as_o may_v further_o appear_v ch_n 11.44_o let_v we_o i_o sâ—â—_n well_o observe_v from_o these_o witness_n that_o these_o linen_n clothes_n be_v lâ—ft_v behind_o that_o which_o he_o see_v to_o believe_v the_o resurrection_n though_o not_o perfect_o because_o as_o he_o say_v of_o himself_o among_o the_o rest_n that_o as_o yet_o his_o faith_n be_v not_o ground_v upon_o the_o holy_a scripture_n touch_v this_o point_n the_o which_o as_o he_o give_v to_o understand_v be_v the_o only_a sure_a ground_n for_o faith_n to_o stay_v upon_o yea_o more_o sure_a than_o end_n we_o do_v not_o weaken_v the_o comfort_n of_o our_o faith_n concern_v the_o eternity_n of_o the_o bless_a life_n let_v we_o in_o no_o wise_n give_v place_n to_o any_o doubt_v or_o lessen_v of_o the_o sentence_n by_o he_o whensoever_o that_o shall_v be_v the_o go_v of_o the_o wicked_a into_o that_o everlasting_a pain_n which_o our_o saviour_n speak_v of_o shall_v not_o be_v with_o their_o good_a will_n but_o no_o doubt_n altogether_o against_o their_o will_n like_v as_o the_o thief_n or_o traitor_n go_v to_o the_o gallow_n or_o to_o any_o other_o place_n of_o execution_n or_o rather_o they_o shall_v not_o go_v unwilling_o as_o be_v say_v even_o now_o of_o the_o wicked_a but_o most_o willing_o and_o ioyous_o and_o thankful_o to_o god_n for_o so_o inestimable_a a_o advancement_n as_o first_o of_o all_o that_o it_o be_v a_o distinct_a blessing_n from_o that_o life_n of_o god_n which_o he_o communicate_v unto_o we_o in_o this_o world_n though_o it_o please_v he_o to_o give_v we_o a_o taste_n of_o eternal_a life_n by_o the_o first_o fruit_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n according_a to_o that_o heb._n 6.4.5_o for_o that_o which_o the_o unregenerate_a and_o unsanctified_a have_v grow_v up_o from_o mean_a estate_n and_o small_a gift_n to_o a_o high_a degree_n and_o to_o great_a learning_n that_o he_o be_v now_o another_o man_n than_o he_o be_v before_o in_o like_a manner_n may_v we_o say_v of_o eternal_a life_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o present_a life_n yea_o even_o of_o the_o life_n of_o the_o most_o godly_a that_o it_o be_v another_o life_n the_o which_o that_o we_o may_v yet_o the_o more_o clear_o perceive_v we_o be_v further_a to_o understand_v that_o beside_o our_o natural_a life_n which_o be_v no_o better_a than_o a_o death_n in_o sin_n and_o trespass_n and_o so_o of_o a_o clean_a contrary_a nature_n there_o be_v three_o degree_n of_o that_o spiritual_a life_n which_o god_n bestow_v upon_o his_o child_n first_o that_o life_n which_o they_o live_v in_o this_o world_n after_o that_o he_o have_v regenerate_v and_o bear_v they_o again_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o yet_o be_v always_o unpersit_a and_o fail_v in_o godliness_n and_o
