carriage_n and_o cold_a and_o formal_a in_o their_o prayer_n we_o do_v not_o separate_v these_o two_o in_o the_o question_n because_o in_o practice_n they_o be_v seldom_o divide_v and_o though_o the_o most_o eminent_a circumspect_a and_o active_a saint_n may_v sometime_o be_v lukewarm_a and_o meet_v with_o little_a life_n or_o quicken_a in_o prayer_n or_o any_o other_o ordinance_n yet_o that_o be_v but_o for_o a_o short_a season_n it_o be_v but_o a_o fit_a not_o a_o state_n and_o abide_a condition_n and_o before_o a_o answer_n come_v there_o may_v be_v a_o supply_n i_o do_v not_o say_v a_o compensation_n by_o way_n of_o merit_n and_o satisfaction_n for_o the_o former_a negligence_n but_o that_o there_o may_v intervene_v such_o acceptable_a activity_n and_o fervency_n in_o prayer_n as_o will_v prevail_v notwithstanding_o the_o before_o go_v slackness_n and_o deadness_n and_o than_o whatever_o be_v the_o issue_n of_o their_o former_a dead_a and_o liveless_a prayer_n yet_o their_o after_o fervency_n will_v not_o want_v a_o reward_n and_o their_o enjoyment_n will_v thereby_o be_v sanctify_v and_o their_o mercy_n will_v be_v give_v in_o return_n thereto_o and_o in_o this_o case_n there_o be_v no_o ground_n for_o anxiety_n and_o fear_n neither_o have_v the_o present_a question_n place_n here_o unless_o it_o be_v to_o satisfy_v curiosity_n and_o thus_o if_o we_o consider_v these_o formal_a prayer_n abstract_o and_o by_o themselves_o and_o without_o any_o reference_n to_o the_o after_o enlargement_n and_o activity_n in_o that_o exercise_n we_o do_v not_o deny_v that_o such_o prayer_n may_v be_v include_v in_o the_o question_n though_o it_o main_o relate_v to_o a_o state_n of_o negligence_n and_o formality_n and_o to_o such_o deadness_n in_o prayer_n as_o have_v be_v usual_a and_o customary_a and_o to_o which_o way_n have_v be_v give_v for_o a_o considerable_a space_n of_o time_n during_o which_o the_o mercy_n thus_o pray_v for_o have_v be_v give_v unto_o elect_a before_o their_o conversion_n or_o some_o general_a promise_n concern_v the_o saint_n perseverance_n repentance_n reformation_n establishment_n etc._n etc._n in_o which_o those_o mercy_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v direct_o include_v but_o out_o of_o his_o absolute_a sovereignty_n and_o mere_a good_a pleasure_n and_o therefore_o such_o a_o dispensation_n as_o not_o flow_v from_o any_o if_o they_o engage_v and_o set_v the_o heart_n a_o work_n to_o wonder_n and_o admire_v the_o patience_n and_o kindness_n of_o he_o who_o love_n 8.7_o love_n cant._n 8.7_o many_o water_n can_v quench_v and_o if_o they_o make_v we_o blush_v and_o be_v ashamed_a when_o we_o confider_v the_o inequality_n and_o disproportion_n that_o be_v between_o our_o way_n and_o god_n way_n towards_o we_o and_o resolve_v with_o the_o prodigal_a though_o the_o case_n be_v not_o the_o same_o nor_o the_o distance_n so_o great_a to_o return_v and_o go_v to_o our_o father_n be_v convince_v that_o such_o a_o lazy_a and_o negligent_a walk_n do_v rather_o tend_v to_o a_o separation_n from_o than_o a_o union_n with_o god_n etc._n etc._n if_o this_o be_v the_o fruit_n of_o these_o mercy_n they_o must_v be_v give_v in_o love_n but_o 2._o if_o they_o lull_v we_o a_o sleep_n and_o make_v we_o secure_v as_o if_o our_o state_n be_v safe_a and_o our_o performance_n acceptable_a because_o successful_a and_o thus_o follow_v with_o outward_a mercy_n they_o must_v be_v give_v in_o wrath_n not_o pure_a and_o vindictive_a but_o paternal_a and_o castigatory_a for_o this_o dally_v in_o his_o worship_n and_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o this_o and_o those_o other_o design_n which_o have_v nothing_o of_o anger_n and_o wrath_n in_o they_o and_o here_o the_o object_n itself_o be_v absolute_o consider_v be_v paena_fw-la be_v malum_fw-la paena_fw-la evil_a a_o fruit_n and_o punishment_n of_o sin_n and_o a_o testimony_n of_o divine_a displeasure_n and_o therefore_o whatever_o be_v say_v of_o the_o fruit_n and_o event_n yet_o the_o thing_n itself_o abstract_o consider_v can_v well_o be_v call_v a_o return_n and_o answer_v of_o prayer_n now_o let_v we_o name_v some_o of_o those_o gracious_a end_n for_o which_o the_o lord_n deni_v to_o give_v the_o particular_a mercy_n we_o desire_v as_o 1._o the_o exercise_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o patience_n grace_n be_v give_v we_o for_o use_v as_o talent_n wherewith_o we_o shall_v trade_v and_o gain_v and_o not_o to_o be_v lay_v up_o in_o a_o napkin_n to_o rust_v and_o corrupt_v and_o therefore_o its_o needful_a that_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o providence_n shall_v offer_v occasion_n for_o their_o exercise_n as_o in_o the_o present_a case_n while_o he_o withholdeth_a our_o heart_n desire_v then_o in_o patience_n to_o submit_v to_o his_o holy_a counsel_n and_o still_o to_o depend_v upon_o he_o as_o it_o must_v be_v the_o work_n of_o honest_a supplicant_n so_o 2._o it_o be_v their_o trial_n thus_o the_o sincerity_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o reality_n of_o their_o grace_n be_v bring_v to_o the_o touchstone_n not_o only_o must_v our_o grace_n be_v exercise_v for_o their_o growth_n and_o increase_n but_o also_o for_o their_o trial_n and_o discovery_n and_o to_o give_v satan_n the_o world_n yea_o and_o our_o own_o heart_n a_o evidence_n of_o their_o truth_n yea_o and_o sometime_o of_o their_o strength_n and_o perfection_n if_o notwithstanding_o we_o meet_v with_o no_o sensible_a demonstration_n yet_o we_o will_v believe_v god_n word_n of_o promise_n depend_v upon_o he_o and_o patient_o bear_v a_o seem_a repulse_n and_o
