meek_a a_o compassionate_a a_o tender-hearted_a saviour_n who_o gather_v his_o lamb_n in_o his_o arm_n and_o carry_v they_o in_o his_o bosom_n and_o gentle_o lead_v those_o that_o be_v with_o young_a walk_v in_o christ_n the_o mark_n of_o our_o receive_v of_o christ_n coloss_n ii_o 6._o as_o you_o have_v therefore_o receive_v christ_n jesus_n the_o lord_n so_o walk_v you_o in_o he_o the_o holy_a corrupt_v that_o doctrine_n in_o this_o second_o chapter_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o minister_n to_o give_v wholesome_a food_n unto_o their_o people_n but_o they_o must_v also_o give_v they_o antidote_n against_o the_o poison_n of_o corrupt_a doctrine_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o minister_n to_o feed_v their_o people_n but_o they_o must_v also_o fence_v their_o people_n against_o wolf_n that_o will_v devour_v the_o flock_n thus_o do_v the_o holy_a apostle_n here_o he_o forewarn_v these_o colossian_n and_o so_o fore-arm_n they_o against_o those_o seducer_n that_o will_v beguile_v they_o with_o philosophy_n with_o legal_a ceremony_n and_o worship_v of_o angel_n and_o other_o such_o corrupt_a doctrine_n mention_v here_o in_o this_o second_o chapter_n to_o that_o end_n he_o lay_v down_o this_o weighty_a rule_n for_o they_o to_o observe_v as_o you_o have_v therefore_o receive_v the_o lord_n christ_n so_o walk_v you_o in_o he_o in_o the_o text_n you_o may_v take_v notice_n of_o two_o thing_n first_o you_o have_v here_o a_o holy_a rule_n prescribe_v in_o these_o word_n as_o you_o have_v receive_v christ_n jesus_n the_o lord_n second_o a_o practice_n answer_v that_o rule_n here_o enjoin_v so_o also_o walk_v you_o in_o he_o as_o you_o have_v the_o word_n will_v admit_v of_o a_o twofold_a interpretation_n either_o take_v the_o sense_n thus_o as_o you_o have_v receive_v the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n by_o epaphras_n who_o be_v a_o faithful_a minister_n of_o christ_n chap._n 1_o 7_o so_o do_v you_o persevere_v in_o that_o doctrine_n and_o live_v according_a to_o it_o this_o be_v the_o usual_a interpretation_n give_v of_o the_o word_n or_o else_o they_o may_v be_v take_v in_o this_o sense_n as_o you_o have_v receive_v the_o lord_n christ_n that_o be_v as_o you_o have_v receive_v he_o into_o your_o heart_n by_o faith_n who_o be_v the_o way_n to_o eternal_a life_n so_o walk_v you_o in_o he_o and_o as_o you_o have_v receive_v grace_n from_o christ_n so_o according_o act_v that_o grace_n that_o you_o have_v receive_v this_o be_v the_o interpretation_n that_o some_o give_v i_o shall_v stick_v rather_o to_o this_o latter_a interpretation_n in_o the_o handle_n of_o this_o text._n many_o doctrine_n may_v be_v gather_v from_o this_o verse_n but_o because_o my_o purpose_n be_v to_o dispatch_v it_o in_o one_o sermon_n as_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o seasonable_a text_n a_o suitable_a subject_n for_o a_o day_n wherein_o we_o have_v be_v partaker_n of_o the_o precious_a ordinance_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n i_o will_v repentance_n to_o israel_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n jesus_n christ_n will_v be_v a_o saviour_n to_o none_o but_o those_o to_o who_o he_o be_v a_o prince_n bishop_n davenant_n in_o his_o commentary_n upon_o the_o colossian_n say_v the_o false_a apostle_n preach_v christ_n and_o their_o disciple_n likewise_o receive_v christ_n but_o neither_o do_v the_o false_a apostle_n preach_v he_o nor_o their_o disciple_n receive_v he_o as_o lord_n but_o they_o receive_v he_o as_o a_o fellow-servant_n with_o moses_n therefore_o say_v the_o apostle_n if_o you_o receive_v christ_n right_o you_o must_v receive_v he_o as_o a_o lord_n three_o here_o i_o may_v observe_v walk_v you_o in_o he_o that_o christ_n be_v the_o way_n the_o live_a way_n the_o only_a way_n wherein_o we_o shall_v walk_v as_o well_o as_o a_o habitual_a receive_n of_o he_o if_o you_o ask_v i_o what_o be_v the_o difference_n between_o these_o two_o receiving_n of_o christ_n the_o habitual_a and_o gradual_a i_o answer_v the_o difference_n lie_v in_o two_o thing_n first_o the_o habitual_a receive_n of_o christ_n be_v do_v but_o once_o the_o gradual_a be_v do_v often_o the_o habitual_a receive_n of_o christ_n be_v do_v wheat_n if_o you_o be_v not_o do_v god_n work_n you_o will_v be_v do_v satan_n work_n on_o the_o contrary_a see_v what_o the_o apostle_n say_v gal_n 5.16_o this_o i_o say_v then_o walk_v in_o the_o not_o be_v remove_v from_o it_o when_o a_o man_n be_v root_v in_o the_o faith_n settle_a and_o establish_v in_o jesus_n christ_n than_o he_o have_v receive_v a_o satisfy_a light_n three_o that_o be_v a_o fatisfy_a light_n when_o a_o man_n can_v act_v faith_n upon_o that_o light_n he_o have_v receive_v and_o make_v bold_a adventure_n for_o the_o truth_n that_o he_o have_v embrace_v when_o he_o can_v act_v faith_n upon_o it_o so_o do_v those_o three_o worthy_n in_o daniel_n 3.17_o they_o have_v receive_v such_o satisfy_a light_n that_o god_n be_v the_o true_a god_n and_o his_o worship_n the_o true_a worship_n that_o they_o venture_v a_o furnace_n for_o it_o say_v they_o if_o it_o be_v so_o our_o god_n who_o we_o serve_v be_v able_a to_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o burn_a fiery_a be_v mask_v with_o never_o such_o fair_a pretence_n yet_o notwithstanding_o a_o man_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o discover_v that_o error_n and_o abhor_v it_o and_o though_o truth_n be_v eclipse_v with_o never_o so_o many_o false_a gloss_n and_o interpretation_n and_o never_o so_o much_o oppose_v yet_o a_o man_n can_v discern_v it_o and_o close_o with_o it_o and_o cleave_v to_o it_o five_o this_o be_v a_o satisfy_a light_n that_o will_v enable_v a_o man_n to_o reconcile_v some_o seem_a difference_n that_o be_v in_o the_o scripture_n let_v i_o give_v you_o a_o instance_n in_o one_o or_o two_o those_o two_o place_n compare_v together_o gen._n 6.6_o and_o it_o repent_v the_o lord_n that_o he_o have_v make_v man_n on_o the_o earth_n and_o it_o grieve_v he_o at_o his_o heart_n but_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o man_n because_o he_o do_v those_o thing_n that_o man_n do_v when_o he_o repent_v let_v i_o give_v you_o another_o instance_n saint_n paul_n tell_v we_o rom._n 3.28_o therefore_o we_o conclude_v that_o a_o man_n be_v justify_v by_o faith_n without_o the_o deed_n of_o the_o law_n but_o saint_n james_n he_o tell_v the_o quite_o contrary_a james_n 2.25_o you_o see_v then_o how_o by_o work_v a_o man_n be_v justify_v and_o not_o by_o faith_n only_o now_o a_o man_n that_o have_v satisfy_v light_n he_o reconcile_v these_o two_o thus_o saint_n paul_n he_o speak_v of_o justification_n before_o god_n and_o saint_n james_n he_o speak_v of_o justification_n before_o man_n we_o be_v justify_v before_o god_n by_o faith_n only_o we_o be_v justify_v before_o man_n by_o work_n again_o they_o may_v be_v reconcile_v thus_o faith_n do_v justify_v our_o person_n but_o good_a work_n do_v justify_v our_o faith_n good_a work_n be_v no_o part_n of_o our_o justification_n but_o only_o a_o proof_n of_o our_o justification_n last_o in_o the_o description_n i_o say_v this_o a_o believer_n have_v receive_v a_o satisfy_a light_n give_v up_o his_o understanding_n resolve_o to_o this_o certainty_n of_o knowledge_n indeed_o and_o thus_o you_o see_v the_o description_n of_o it_o and_o have_v the_o point_v open_v now_o let_v i_o make_v application_n of_o it_o use_v 1_o if_o this_o be_v a_o certain_a truth_n that_o they_o that_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n shall_v not_o only_o know_v more_o of_o god_n
