right hand and upon the great toe of his right foot upon the bloud of the trespass-offering 18 And the remnant of the oyl that is in the priests hand he shall pour upon the head of him that is to be cleansed and the priest shall make an atonement for him before the LORD 19 And the priest shall offer the sin-offering and make an atonement for him that is to be cleansed from his uncleanness and afterward he shall kill the burnt-offering 20 And the priest shall offer the burnt-offering and the meat offering upon the altar and the priest shall make an atonement for him and he shall be clean 21 What thing is this thou hast done unto us Why hast thou served us thus that thou calledst us not when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites And they did chide with him † Heb. strongly sharply 2 And he said unto them What have I done now in comparison of you Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better then the vintage of Abiezer 3 God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian Oreb and Zeeb and what was I able to do in comparison of you Then their † Heb. spirit anger was abated toward him when he had said that 4 ¶ And Gideon came to Jordan and passed over he and the three hundred men that were with him saint yet pursuing them 5 And he said unto the men of Succoth Give I pray you loaves of bread unto the people that follow me for they be faint and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna kings of Midian 6 ¶ And the princes of Succoth said Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand that we should give bread unto thine army 7 And Gideon said Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zulmunna into mine hand then I will † Heb. 〈◊〉 tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers 8 And he went up thence to Penuel and spake unto them likewise and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him 9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel saying When I come again in peace I will break down this tower 10 ¶ Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor and their hosts with them about fifteen thousand men all that were lest of all the hosts of the children of the east for there fell ‖ Or an hundred and twenty thousand every one drewing a sword an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword 11 ¶ And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah and smote the host for the host was secure 12 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled he pursued after them and took the two kings of Midian Zebah and Zalmunna and † Heb. terrified discomfited all the host 13 ¶ And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battel before the sun was up 14 And caught a young man of the men of Succoth and enquired of him and he † Heb. ●●rit described unto him the princes of Succoth and the elders thereof even threescore and seventeen men 15 And he came unto the men of Succoth and said Behold Zebah and Zalmunna with whom ye did upbraid me saying Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary 16 And he took the elders of the city and thorns of the wilderness and briers and with them he † Heb. ma●e to know taught the men of Succoth 17 and he beat down the tower of * 1 King 12.25 Penuel and slew the men of the city 18 ¶ Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna What manner of men were they whom ye
light † Heb. of his feet of foot † Heb. as one of the roes that is in the field as a wilde roe 19 And Asahel pursued after Abner and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left † Heb. from after Abner from following Abner 20 Then Abner looked behinde him and said Art thou Asahel and he answered I am 21 And Abner said to him Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left and lay thee hold on one of the young men and take thee his ‖ Or spoil armour But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him 22 And Abner said again to Asahel Turn thee aside from following me wherefore should I smite thee to the ground how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother 23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him under the fifth rib that the spear came out behinde him and he fell down there and died in the same place and it came to pass that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still 24 Joab also and Abishai pursued after Abner and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon 25 ¶ And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner and became one troup and stood on the top of an hill 26 Then Abner called to Joab and said Shall the sword devour for ever knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end how long shall it be then ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren 27 And Joab said As God liveth unless thou hadst spoken surely then † Heb. from the morning in the morning the people had ‖ Or gone away gone up every one from following his brother 28 So Joab blew a trumpet and all the people stood still and pursued after Israel no more neither fought they any more 29 And Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain and passed over Jordan and went through all Bithron and they came to Mahanaim 30 And Joab returned from following Abner and when he had gathered all the people together there lacked of Davids servants nineteen men and Asahel 31 But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin and of Abners men so that three hundred and threescore men died 32 ¶ And they took up Asahel and buried him in the sepulchre of his father which was in Beth-lehem and Joab and his men went all night and they came to Hebron at break of day CHAP. III. 1 During the war David still waxeth stronger 2 Six sons were born to him in Hebron 6 Abner displeased with Ish-bosheth 12 revolteth to David 13 David requireth a condition to bring him his wife Michal 17 Abner having communed with the Israelites is feasted by David and dismissed 22 Joab returning from battel is displeased with the king and killeth Abner 28 David curseth Joab 31 and mourneth for Abner NOw there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David but David waxed stronger and stronger and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker 2 ¶ And unto David were sons born in Hebron and his first-born was Amnon of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess 3 And his second Chileab of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite and the third Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur 4 And the fourth Adonijah the son of Haggith and the fifth Shephatiah the son of Abital 5 And the sixth Ithream by Eglah Davids wife these were born to David in Hebron 6 ¶ And it came to pass while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul 7 And Saul had a concubine whose name was * Chap. 21.10 Rizpah the daughter of Aiah and Ish-bosheth said unto Abner Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my fathers concubine 8 Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth and said Am I a dogs head which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father to his brethren and to his friends and have not delivered thee into the hand of David that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman 9 So do God to Abner and more also except as the LORD hath sworn to David even so I do to him 10 To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah from Dan even to Beer sheba 11 And he could not answer Abner a word again because he feared him 12 ¶ And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf saying Whose is the land saying also Make thy league with me and behold my hand shall be with thee to bring about all Israel unto thee 13 ¶ And he said Well I will make a league with thee but one thing I require of thee † Heb. saying that is Thou shalt not see my face except thou first bring Michal Sauls daughter when thou comest to see my face 14 And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth Sauls son saying Deliver me my wife Michal which I espoused to me * 1 Sam. 18.25 27. for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines 15 And Ish-bosheth sent and took her from her husband even from * 1 Sam. 25.44 Phalti Phaltiel the son of Laish 16 And her husband went with her † Heb. going and weeping along weeping behinde her to Bahurim then said Abner unto him Go return And he returned 17 ¶ And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel saying Ye sought for David † Heb. both yesterday and the third day in times past to be king over you 18 Now then do it for the LORD hath spoken of David saying By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines and out of the hand of all their enemies 19 And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin 20 So Abner came to David to Hebron and twenty men with him and David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast 21 And Abner said unto David I will arise and go and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king that they may make a league with thee that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth And David sent Abner away and he went in peace 22 ¶ And behold the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troup and brought in a great spoil with them but Abner was not with David in Hebron for he had sent him away and he was gone in peace 23 When
that was in the front of the house the length of it was according to the breadth of the house twenty cubits the height was an hundred and twenty and he overlaid it within with pure gold 5 And the greater house he cieled with fir tree which he overlaid with fine gold and set thereon palm-trees and chains 6 And he † Heb. covered garnished the house with precious stones for beauty and the gold was gold of Parvaim 7 He overlaid also the house the beams the posts and the walls thereof and the doors thereof with gold and graved cherubims on the walls 8 And he made the most holy house the length whereof was accord●● to the breadth of the house twenty cubits and the breadth thereof twenty cubits and he overlaid it with fine gold amounting to six hundred talents 9 And the weight of the nails was fifty shekels of gold and he overlaid the upper chambers with gold 10 And in the most holy house he made two cherubims ‖ Or as some think of moveable work of image-work and overlaid them with gold 11 ¶ And the wings of the cherubims were twenty cubits long one wing of the one cherub was five cubits reaching to the wall of the house and the other wing was likewise five cubits reaching to the wing of the other cherub 12 And one wing of the other cherub was five cubits reaching to the wall of the house and the other wing was five cubits also joyning to the wing of the other cherub 13 The wings of these cherubims spread themselves forth twenty cubits and they stood on their feet and their faces were ‖ Or toward the house inward 14 ¶ And he made the * Matth. 27.51 vail of blue and purple and crimson and fine linen and † Heb. caused to ascend wrought cherubims thereon 15 Also he made before the house * 1 King 7.15 Jer. 52.21 two pillars of thirty and five cubits † Heb. long high and the chapiter that was on the top of each of them was five cubits 16 And he made chains as in the oracle and put them on the heads of the pillars and made an hundred pomegranates and put them on the chains 17 And he * 1 King 7.21 reared up the pillars before the temple one on the right hand and the other on the left and called the name of that on the right hand ‖ That is he shall establish Jachin and the name of that on the left ‖ That is in it is strength Boaz. CHAP. IV. 1 The altar of brass 2 The molten sea upon twelve oxen 6 The ten lavers candlesticks and tables 9 The courts and the instrumants of brass 19 The instruments of gold MOreover he made an altar of brass twenty cubits the length thereof and twenty cubits the breadth thereof and ten cubits the height thereof 2 ¶ * 1 King 7.23 Also he made a molten sea of ten cubits † Heb. from his brim to his brim from brim to brim round in compass and five cubits the height thereof and a fine of thirty cubits did compass it round about 3 * 1 King 7.24 And under it was the similitude of oxen which did compass it round about ten in a cubit compassing the sea round about Two rows of oxen were cast when it was cast 4 It stood upon twelve oxen three looking toward the north and three looking toward the west and three looking toward the south and three looking toward the east and the sea was set above upon them and all their hinder parts were inward 5 And the thickness of it was an hand-breadth and the brim of it like the work of the brim of a cup ‖ Or ●●●e a lily-flower with flowers of lilies and it received and held thre● thousand baths 6 ¶ He made also ten lavers and put five on the right hand and five on the left to wash in them † Heb. the work of burnt-offering such things as they offered for the burnt-offering they washed in them but the sea was for the priests to wash in 7 And he made ten candlesticks of gold according to their form and set them in the temple five on the right hand and five on the left 8 He made also ten tables and placed them in the temple five on the right side and five on the left and he made an hundred ‖ Or hands basons of gold 9 ¶ Furthermore he made the court of the priests the great court and doors for the court and overlaid the doors of them with brass 10 And he set the sea on the right side of the east-end over against the south 11 And Huram made the pots and the shovels and the ‖ Or bowls basons and Huram † Heb. finished to make finished the work that he was to make for king Solomon for the house of God 12 To wit the two pillars and the pommels and the chapiters which were on the top of the two pillars and the two wreaths to cover the two pommels of the chapiters which were on the top of the pillars 13 And four hundred pomegranates on the two wreaths two rows of pomegranates on each wreath to cover the two pommels of the chapiters which were † Heb. upon the face upon the pillars 14 He made also bases and ‖ Or caldrons lavers made he upon the bases 15 One sea and twelve oxen under it 16 The pots also and the shovels and the flesh hooks and all their instruments did Huram his father make to king Solomon for the house of the LORD of † Heb. made bright or scoured bright brass 17 In the plain of Jordan did the king cast them in the † Heb. thicknesses of the ground clay-ground between Succoth and and Zeredathah 18 Thus Solomon made all these vessels in great abundance for the weight of the brass could not be found out 19 ¶ And Solomon made all the vessels that were for the house of God the golden altar also the tables whereon the shew-bread was set 20 Moreover the candlesticks with their lamps that they should burn after the manner before the oracle of pure gold 21 And the flowers and the lamps and the tongs made he of gold and that † Heb. perfections of gold perfect gold 22 And the snuffers and the ‖ Or bowls basons and the spoons and the censers of pure gold and the entry of the house the inner doors thereof for the most holy place and the doors of the house of the temple were of gold CHAP. V. 1 The dedicated treasures 2 The solemn induction of the ark into the cracle 11 God being praised giveth a visible signe of his favour THus all the work that Solomon made for the house of the LORD was finished * 1 King 7.51 and Solomon brought in all the things that David his father had dedicated and the silver and the gold

VIII 1 The religious manner of reading and hearing the law 9 They comfort the people 13 The forwardness of them to hear and be insirusted 16 They keep the feast of tabernacles ANd all * Ezra 3.1 the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water-gate and they spake unto Ezra the * Ezra 7.6 scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses which the LORD had commanded to Israel 2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women and all † Heb. that understood in hearing that could hear with understanding upon the first day of the seventh moneth 3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water-gate † Heb. from the light from the morning until mid-day before the men and the women and those that could understand and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law 4 And Ezra the scribe stood upon a † Heb. tower of wood pulpit of wood which they had made for the purpose and beside him stood Mattithiah and Shema and Anaiah and Urijah and Hilkiah and Maaseiah on his right hand and on his left hand Pedaiah and Mishael and Malchiah and Hashum and Hashbadana Zechariah and Meshullam 5 And Ezra opened the book in the † Heb. eyes sight of all the people for he was above all the people and when he opened it all the people stood up 6 And Ezra blessed the LORD the great God and all the people answered Amen amen with lifting up their hands and they bowed their heads and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground 7 Also Jeshua and Bani and Sherebiah Jamin Akkub Shabbethai Hodijah Maaseiah Kelita Azariah Jozabad Hanan Pelaiah and the Levites caused the people to understand the law and the people stood in their place 8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly and gave the sense and caused them to understand the reading 9 ¶ And Nehemiah which is ‖ Or the governou● the Tirshatha and Ezra the priest the scribe and the Levites that taught the people said unto all the people This day is holy unto the LORD your God mourn not nor weep for all the people wept when they heard the words of the law 10 Then he said unto them Go your way eat the fat and drink the sweet and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared for this day is holy unto our Lord neither be you sorry for the joy of the LORD is your strength 11 So the Levites stilled all the people saying Hold your peace for the day is holy neither be ye grieved 12 And all the people went their way to eat and to drink and to send portions and to make great mirth because they had understood the words that were declared unto them 13 ¶ And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people the priests and the Levites unto Ezra the scribe even ‖ Or that they might instruct in the words of the law to understand the words of the law 14 And they found written in the law which the LORD had commanded † Heb. by the hand of by Moses that the children of Israel should dwell in * Levit. 23.34 Deut. 16.13 booths in the feast of the seventh moneth 15 And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities and in Jerusalem saying Go forth unto the mount and fetch olive-branches and pine-branches and myrtle branches and palm-branches and branches of thick trees to make booths as it is written 16 ¶ So
his anger 18 They are as stubble before the wind and as chaff that the storm † Heb. stealeth away carrieth away 19 God lay●th up ‖ That is the punishment of ●l● iniquity his iniquity for his children he rewardeth him and he shall know it 20 His eyes shall see his destruction and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty 21 For what pleasure hath he in his house after him when the number of his moneths is cut off in the midst 22 Shall any teach God knowledge seeing he judgeth those that are high 23 One dieth † Heb. in his very perfection or in the strength of his pe●fection in his full strength being wholly at ease and quiet 24 His ‖ Or milk pails breasts are full of milk and his bones are moistned with marrow 25 And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul and never eateth with pleasure 26 They shall lie down alike in the dust and the worms shall cover them 27 Behold I know your thoughts and the devices which ye wrongfully magine against me 28 For ye say Where is the house of the prince and where are † Heb. the tent of the taber●●●les of the wicked the dwelling-places of the wicked 29 Have ye not asked them that go by the way and do ye not know their tokens 30 * Pro. 16.4 That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction they shall be brought forth to † Heb. the day of ●raths the day of wrath 31 Who shall declare his way to his face and who shall repay him what he hath done 32 Yet shall he be brought to the † Heb. ●raves grave and shall † Heb. watch in the heap remain in the tomb 33 The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him and every man shall draw after him as there are innumerable before him 34 How then comfort ye me in vain seeing in your answers there remaineth † Heb. transgression falshood CHAP. XXII 1 Elipbaz sheweth that mans goodness profiteth not God 5 He accuseth ●ob of di●ers sins 21 Hee●h●rteth him to repentance with promises of mer●y THen Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said 2 Can a man be profitable unto God ‖ Or if be may be profitable doth his good success depend thereon as he that is wise may be profitable unto himself 3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty that thou art righteous or is it gain to him that thou makest thy ways perfect 4 Will he reprove thee for fear of thee will he enter with thee into judgement 5 Is not thy wickedness great and thine iniquities infinite 6 For thou hast taken a pledge from thy brother for nought and † Heb. stripped the clothes of the naked stripped the naked of their clothing 7 Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry 8 But as for † Heb. the man of arm the mighty man he had the earth and the † Heb. eminent or accepted for counter-na●ee honourable man dwelt in it 9 Thou hast sent widows away empty and the arms of the fatherless have been broken 10 Therefore snares are round about thee and sudden fear troubleth thee 11 Or darkness that thou canst not see and abundance of waters cover thee 12 Is not God in the height of heaven and behold † Heb. the ●ead of the stars the height of the stars how high they are 13 And thou sayest ‖ Or What. How doth God know can he judge through the dark cloud 14 Thick clouds are a covering to him that he seeth not and he walketh in the circuit of heaven 15 Hast thou marked the old way which wicked men have troden 16 Which were cut down out of time † Heb. a floud was pourel upon th●ir foundation whose foundation was overflown with a floud 17 * Ch. 21.14 Which said unto God depart from us and what can the Almighty do ‖ Or to them for them 18 Yet he filled their houses with good things but * Ch. 21.16 the counsel of the wicked is far from me 19 * Ps 107.42 The righteous see it and are glad and the innocent laugh them to scorn 20 Whereas our ‖ Or estate substance is not cut down but ‖ Or their excellency the remnant of them the fire consumeth 21 Acquaint now thy self ‖ That is with God with him and be at peace thereby good shall come unto thee 22 Receive I pray thee the law from his mouth and lay up his words in thine heart 23 * Chap. 8.5 6. If thou return to the Almighty thou shalt be built up thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles 24 Then shalt thou lay up gold ‖ Or on the dust as dust and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks 25 Yea the Almighty shall be thy ‖ Or gold defence and thou shalt have † Heb. silver of strength plenty of silver 26 For then shalt thou have thy delight in the Almighty and shalt lift up thy face unto God 27 Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him and he shall hear thee and thou shalt pay thy vows 28 Thou shalt also decree a thing and it shall be established unto thee and the light shall shine upon thy ways 29 When men are cast down then thou shalt say There is lifting up and he shall save † Heb. him that hath low eyes the humble person 30 ‖ Or the innocent shall deliver the island He shall deliver the island of the innocent and it is delivered by the pureness of thine hands CHAP. XXIII 1 Job lonzeth to appear before God 6 in confidence of his mercy 8 God who is invisible observeth our ways 11 Jobs innocency 13 Gods decree is immutable THen ●ob answered and said 2 Even to day is my complaint bitter † Heb. my hand my stroke is heavier then my groaning 3 O that I knew where I might finde him that I might come even to his seat 4 I would order my cause before him and fill my mouth with arguments 5 I would know the words which he would answer me and understand what he would say unto me 6 Will he plead against me with his great power No but he would put strength in me 7 There the righteous might dispute with him so should I be delivered for ever from my judge 8 Behold I go forward but he is not there and backward but I cannot perceive him 9 On the left hand where he doth work but I cannot behold him he hideth himself on the right hand that I cannot see him 10 But he knoweth † Heb. the way that is with me the way that I take when he hath tried me I shall come forth as gold 11 My foot hath held his steps his way have I kept and not declined 12 Neither have I gone back from the
sincere 7 and his life safe from snares ¶ A psalm of David LORD I cry unto thee make Laste unto me give car unto my voice when I cry unto thee 2 Let my prayer be † Heb. directed set forth before thee as incense and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice 3 Set a watch O LORD before my mouth keep the door of my lips 4 Incline not my heart to any evil thing to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity and let me not eat of their dainties 5 ‖ Or let the righteous smite me kindly and reprove me let not their pricious oyl break my head c. X. 1 The wo of tyrants 5 Assyria the rod of hypocrites for his pride shall he broken 20. Mauzzim or as for the almighty God in his seat he shall honour yea he shall honour a god c. forces and a God whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold and silver and with precious stones and † Heb. things desired pleasant things 39 Thus shall he do in the † Heb. fortresses of munitions most strong holds with a strange God whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory and he shall cause them to rule over many and shall divide the land for † Heb. a price gain 40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind with chariots and with hors men and with many ships and he shall enter into the countreys and shall overflow and pass over 41 He shall enter also into the ‖ Or goodly land † Heb. land of delight or ornament glorious land and many countreys shall be overthrown but these shall escape out of his hand even Edom and Moa● and the chief of the children of Ammon 42 He shall † Heb. send forth stretch forth his hand also upon the countreys and the land of Egypt shall not escape 43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver and over all the precious things of Egypt and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps 44 But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him therefore he s●●ll go forth with great fury to destroy and utterly to make away many 45 And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the ‖ Or goodly † Heb. mountain of delicht of holiness glorious holy mountain yet he shall come to his end and none shall help him CHAP. II. 1 The prayer of Jonah 10 He is delivered from the fish THen Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fishes belly 2 And said I * Ps 12● 1 cried ‖ Or out of mine affliction by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD and he heard me out of the belly of ‖ Or the grave hell cried I and thou heardest my voice 3 For thou hadst cast me into the deep in the † Heb heart midst of the seas and the flouds compassed me about all thy billows and thy waves passed over me 4 Then I said I am cast out of thy sight yet I will look again toward thy holy temple 5 The * Psal 69.1 waters compassed me about even to the soul the depth closed me round about the weeds were wrapt about my head 6 I went down to the † Heb. cuttings off bottoms of the mountains the earth with her bars was about me for ever yet hast thou brought up my life from ‖ Or the pit corruption O LORD my God 7 When my soul fainted within me I remembred the LORD and my prayer came in unto thee into thine holy temple 8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy 9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of * Ps 50.14 23. 116.17 Hos 14.2 Heb. 13.15 thanksgiving I will pay that that I have vowed * Psal 3.8 salvation is of the LORD 10 ¶ And the LORD spake unto the fish and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land CHAP. III. 1 Jonah sent again preacheth to the Ninevites 5Vpon their repentance 10 God repenteth ANd the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time saying 2 Arise go unto Nineveh that great city and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee 3 So Jonah arose and went unto Nineveh according to the word of the LORD now Nineveh was an † Heb. of God exceeding great citie of three days journey 4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a days journey and he cried and said Yet fourty days and Nineveh shall be overthrown 5 ¶ So the people of Nineveh * Mat. 12.41 Luk. 11.32 beleeved God and proclaimed a fast and put on sackcloth from the greatest of them even to the least of them 6 For word came unto the king of Nineveh and he arose from his throne and he laid his robe from him and covered him with sackcloth and sat in ashes 7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and † Heb. said published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his † Heb. great men nobles saying Let neither man nor beast herd nor flock taste any thing let them not feed nor drink water 8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth and cry mightily unto God yea let them turn every one from his evil way and from the violence that is in their hands 9 * Joel 2.14 Who can tell if God will turn and repent and turn away from his fierce anger that we perish not 10 ¶ And God saw their works that they turned from their evil way and God repented of the evil that he had said that he would do unto them and he did it not CHAP. IV. 1 Jonah repining at Gods mercy 4 is reproved by the type of a gourd BUt it disbleased Jonah exceedingly and he was very angry 2 And he prayed unto the LORD and said I pray thee O LORD was not this my saying when I was yet in my countrey Therefore I * Chap. 1.3 fled before unto Tarshish for I knew that thou art a * Exod. 24.6 ●sal 86.5 Joel 2.13 gracious God and merciful slow to anger and of great kindness and repentest thee of the evil 3 Therefore now O LORD take I beseech thee my life from me for it is better for me to die then to live 4 ¶ Then said the LORD ‖ Or Art thou greatly angry Doest thou well to be angry 5 So Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east-side of the city and there made him a booth and sat under it in the shadow till he might see what would become of the city 6 And the LORD God prepared a ‖ Or palm-rist † Heb. Kikajon gourd and made it to come up over Jonah that it might be a shadow over his head to deliver him from his grief So ●onah † Heb. rej●yced with great joy was exceeding glad of the gourd 7 But God prepared a worm when the morning rose the next day and it smote the gourd that it withered 8 And it came to pa●● when the sun did arise that God prepared a ‖ Or silent vehement east-wind and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah that he fainted and wished in himself to die and said It is better for me to die then to live 9 And God said to Jonah ‖ Or Art thou greatly angry Doest thou well to be angry for the gourd and he said ‖ Or I am greatly angry I do well to be angry even unto death 10 Then said the LORD Thou hast ‖ Or spared had pity on the gourd for the which thou hast not laboured neither madest it grow which † Heb. was the son of the night came up in a night and perished in a night 11 And should not I spare Nineveh that great city wherein are more then sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand and also much cattel ¶ MICAH CHAP. I. 1 Micah sheweth the wrath of God against Jacob for idolatry 10 He exhorteth to mourning THe word of the LORD that came to Micah the Morasthite in the days of Jotham Ahaz and Hezekiah kings of Judah which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem 2 † Heb. III. 1Vnder the type of Joshua the restauration of the church 8 Christ the Branch is promised ANd he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD and ‖ That is an adversary Satan standing at his right hand † Heb. to ●ebis adversary to resist him 2 And the LORD said unto Satan * Jude 9. The LORD rebuke thee O Satan even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee is not this a brand pluckt out of the fire 3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments and stood before the angel 4 And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him saying Take away the filthy garments from him And unto him he said Behold I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee and I will clothe thee with change of raiment 5 And I said Let them set a fair mitre upon his head so they set a fair mitre upon his head and clothed him with garments and the angel of the LORD stood by 6 And the angel of the LORD protested unto Joshua saying 7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts If thou wilt walk in my ways and if thou wilt keep my ‖ Or ordinance charge then thou shalt also judge my house and shalt also keep my courts and I will give thee † Heb. walks places to walk among these that stand by 8 Hear now O Joshua the high priest thou and thy fellows that sit before thee for they are † Heb. men of wonder men wondred at for behold I will bring forth my servant the * Isa 11.1 Jer. 23.5 and 33.15 Ch. 6.12 Luk. 1.78 BRANCH 9 For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua upon one stone shall be seven eyes behold I will engrave the graving thereof saith the LORD of hosts I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day 10 In that day saith the LORD of hosts shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig-tree CHAP. IV. 1 By the golden candlestick is foreshewed the good success of Zerubbabels foundation 11 By the two olive-trees the two anointed ones ANd the angel that talked with me came again and waked me as a man that is wakened out of his sleep 2 And said unto me What seest thou And I said I have looked and behold a candlestick all of gold † Heb. with her bowl with a bowl upon the top of it and his seven lamps thereon and ‖ Or seven several pipes to the lamps c. seven pipes to the seven lamps which were upon the top thereof 3 And two olive-trees by it one upon the right side of the bowl and the other upon the left side thereof 4 So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me saying What are these my lord 5 Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me Knowest thou not what these be And I said No my lord 6 Then he answered and spake unto me saying This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel saying Not by ‖ Or army might nor by power but by my spirit saith the LORD of hosts 7 Who art thou O great mountain before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain and he shall bring forth the head-stone thereof with shoutings crying Grace grace unto it 8 Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me saying 9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house his hands shall also finish it and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you 10 For who hath despised the day of small things ‖ Or sith the seven ●es of the LORD shall rejoyce for they shall rejoyce and shall see the † Heb. stone of tin plummet in the hand of Zerubhabel with those seven * Ch. 3.9 they are the eyes of the LORD which run to and fro through the whole earth 11 ¶ Then answered I and said unto him What are these two olive-trees upon the right side of the candlestick upon the left side thereof 12 And I answered again and said unto him What be these two olive-branches which † Heb. by the hand through the two golden pipes ‖ Or empty out of themselves oylinto the gold empty † Heb. the gold the golden oyl out of themselves 13 And he answered me and said Knowest thou not what these be And I said No my lord 14 Then said he These are the two † Heb. sons of oyl anointed ones that stand by the Lord of the whole earth CHAP. unto us your minde concerning the writings Then began the first who had spoken of the strength of wine 18 And he said thus O ye men how exceeding strong is wine it causeth all men to err that drink it 19 It maketh the minde of the king and of the fatherless childe to be all one of the bond-man and of the freeman of the poor man and of the rich 20 It turneth also every thought into jollity and mirth so that a man remembreth neither sorrow nor debt 21 And it maketh every heart rich so that a man remembreth neither king nor governour and it maketh to speak all things by talents 22 And when they are in their cups they forget their love both to friends and brethren and a little after draw out swords 23 But when they are from the wine they remember not what they have done 24 O ye men is not wine the strongest that enforceth to do thus And when he had so spoken he held his peace CHAP. IV. 1 The second declareth the power of a king 14 The third the force of women 33 and of truth 41 The third is judged to be wisest 47 and obtaineth letters of the king to build Jerusalem 58 He praiseth God and sheweth his brethren what he had done THen the second that had spoken of the strength of the king began to say 2 O ye men do not men excel in strength that ‖ Or have the command bear rule over sea and land and all things in them 3 But yet the king is more mighty for he is lord of all these things and hath dominion over them and whatsoever he commandeth them they do 4 If he bid them make war the one against the other they do it if he send them out against the enemies they go and break down mountains walls and towers 5 They slay and are slain and transgress not the kings commandment if they get the victory they bring all to the king as well the spoil as all things else 6 Likewise for those that are no souldiers and have not to do with wars but use husbandry when they have reaped again that which they had sown they bring it to the king and compel one another to pay tribute unto the king 7 And yet he is but one man if he command to kill they kill if he command to spare they spare 8 If he command to smite they smite if he command to make desolate they make desolate if he command to build they build 9 If he command to cut down they cut down if he command to plant they plant 10 So all his people and his armies obey him furthermore he lieth down he eateth and drinketh and taketh his rest 11 And these keep watch round about him neither ‖ Or can may any one depart and do his own business neither disobey they him in any thing 12 O ye men how should not the king be mightiest when in such sort he is obeyed And he held his tongue 13 ¶ Then the third who had spoken of women and of the truth this was Zorobabel began to speak 14 O ye men it is not the great king nor the multitude of men neither is it wine that † Heb. is of force excelleth who is it then that ruleth them or hath the lordship over them are they not women 15 Women have born the king and all the people that bear rule by sea and land 16 Even of them came they and they nourished them up that planted the vineyards from whence the wine cometh 17 These also make garments for men these bring glory unto men and without women cannot men be 18 Yea and if men have gathered together gold and silver or any other goodly thing do they not love a woman which is comely in favour and beauty 19 And letting all those things go do they not gape and even with open mouth fix their eyes fast on her and have not all men more desire unto her then unto silver or gold or any goodly thing whatsoever 20 A man leaveth his own father that brought him up and his own countrey and cleaveth unto his wife 21 He sticks not to spend his life with his wife and remembreth neither father nor mother nor countrey 22 By this also you must know that women have dominion over you do ye not labour and toil and give and bring all to the woman 23 Yea a man taketh his sword and goeth his way to rob and to steal to sail upon the sea and upon rivers 24 And looketh upon a lion and goeth in the darkness and when he hath stoln spoiled and robbed he bringeth it to his love 25 Wherefore a man loveth his wife better then father or mother 26 Yea many there be that have ‖ Or grown desperate run out of their wits for women and become servants for their sakes 27 Many also have perished have erred and sinned for women 28 And now do you not beleeve me is not the king great in his power do not all regions fear to touch him 29 Yet did I see him and Apame the kings concubine the daughter of the admirable ‖ Jos antiq l. 11. c. 4. ESDRAS CHAP. VI. 1 Christ continueth his sermon in the mount speaking of alms 5 prayer 14 forgiving our brethren 16 fasting 19 where our treasure is to be laid up 24 of serving God and mammon 25 exhorteth not to be careful for wordly things 33 but to seek Gods kingdom TAke heed that ye do not your alms before men to be seen of them otherwise ye have no reward ‖ Or with of your Father which is in heaven 2 Therefore * Rom. 12.8 when thou doest thine alms ‖ Or cause not a trumpet to be sounded do not sound a trumpet before thee as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets that they may have glory of men Verily I say unto you they have their reward 3 But when thou doest alms let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth 4 That thine alms may be in secret and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly 5 ¶ And when thou prayest thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets that they may be seen of men Verily I say unto you they have their reward 6 But thou when thou prayest enter into thy closet and when thou hast shut thy door pray to thy Father which is in secret and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly 7 But when ye pray use not vain * Ecclus 7.14 repetitions as the heathen do for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking 8 Be not ye therefore like unto them for your father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him 9 After this manner therefore pray ye * Luk. 11. ● Our Father which art in heaven Hallowed be thy name 10 Thy kingdom come Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven 11 Give us this day our daily bread 12 And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debters 13 And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever Amen 14 * Mark 11.25 For if ye forgive men their trespasses your heavenly Father will also forgive you 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses neither will your Father forgive your trespasses 16 ¶ Moreover when ye fast be not as the hypocrites of a sad countenance for they disfigure their faces that they may appear unto men to fast Verily I say unto you they have their reward 17 But thou when thou fastest anoint thine head and wash thy face 18 That thou appear not unto men to fast but unto thy Father which is in secret thy father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly 19 ¶ Lay not up for your selves treasures upon earth where moth and rust doth corrupt and where theeves break through and steal 20 * Luke 12.32 1 Tim. 6.19 But lay up for your selves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt and where theeves do not break through nor steal 21 For where your treasure is there will your heart be also 22 * Luke 11.34 The light of the body is the eye if therefore thine eye be single thy whole body shall be full of light 23 But if thine eye be evil thy whole body shall be full of darkness If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness how great is that darkness 24 ¶ * Luke 16.13 No man can serve two masters for either he will hate the one and love the other or else he will hold to the one and despise the other Ye cannot serve God and mammon 25 Therefore I say unto you * Ps 55.22 Luk 12.22 1 Pet. 5.7 Take no thought for your life what ye shall eat or what ye shall drink nor yet for your body what ye shall put on Is not the life more then meat and the body then raiment 26 Behold the fowls of the air for they sowe not neither do they reap nor gather into barns yet your heavenly Father feedeth them Are ye not much better then they 27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature 28 And why take ye thought for raiment Consider the lillies of the field how they grow they toil not neither do they spin 29 And yet I say unto you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arayed like one of these 30 Wherefore if God so clothe the grass of the field which to day is and to morrow is cast into the oven shall be not much more clothe you O ye of little faith 31 Therefore take no thought saying What shall we eat or what shall we drink or wherewithal shall we be clothed 32 For after all these things do the Gentiles seek for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you 34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow for the morrow shall take thought for the things of it self sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof CHAP. VII 1 Christ ending his sermon in the mount reproveth rash judgement 6 forbiddeth to cast holy things to dogs 7 exhorteth to prayer 13 to enter in at the strait gate 15 to beware of false prophets 21 not to be hearers but do●rs of the word 24 like houses builded on a rock 26 and not on the sand * Luk. 6.37 Rom. 2.1 JUdge not that ye be not judged 2 For with what judgement ye judge ye shall be judged * Mar. 4.24 Luk. 6.38 and with what measure ye mete it shall be measured to you again 3 * Luk. 6.41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brothers eye but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye 4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye and behold a beam is in thine own eye 5 Thou hypocrite first cast out the beam out of thine own eye and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brothers eye 6 ¶ Give not that which is holy

XXVI 1 The rulers conspire against Christ 6 The woman anointeth his ●ead 14 Judas selleth him 17 Christ eateth the pass-over 26 instituteth his holy supper 36 prayeth in the garden 47 and being betrayed with a kiss 57 is carried to Caiaphas 69 and dented of Peter ANd it came to pass when Jesus had finished all these sayings he said unto his disciples 2 * Mar. 14.1 Luk. 22.1 John 13.1 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the pass over and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified 3 * Joh. 11.47 Then assembled together the chief priests and the scribes and the elders of the people unto the palace of the high priest who was called Caiaphas 4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty and kill him 5 But they said Not on the feast day lest there be an uproar among the people 6 ¶ * Mar. 14.3 Joh. 11.1 Now when Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper 7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster-box of very precious ointment and poured it on his head as he sat at meat 8 But when his disciples saw it they had indignation saying To what purpose is this waste 9 For this ointment might have been sold for much and given to the poor 10 When Jesus understood it he said unto them Why trouble ye the woman for she hath wrought a good work upon me 11 * Deut. 15.11 For ye have the poor always with you but me ye have not always 12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body she did it for my burial 13 Verily I say unto you Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world there shall also this that this woman hath done be told for a memorial of her 14 ¶ * Mark 14.10 Luke 23.3 Then one of the twelve called Judas Iscariot went unto the chief priests 15 And said unto them What will ye give me and I will deliver him unto you And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver 16 And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him 17 ¶ * Mark 14.12 Luke 22.7 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus saying unto him Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the pass-over 18 And he said Go into the city to such a man and say unto him The Master saith My time is at hand I will keep the pass-over at thy house with my disciples 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them and they made ready the pass-over 20 * Mark 14.16 Luke 22.14 Jo● 13.21 Now when the even was come he sat down with the twelve 21 And as they did eat he said Verily I say unto you that one of you shall betray me 22 And they were exceeding sorrowful and began every one of them to say unto him Lord is it I 23 And he answered and said * Psal 41.9 He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish the same shall betray me 24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him but wo unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed it had been good for that man if he had not been born 25 Then Judas which betrayed him answered and said Master is it I He said unto him Thou hast said 26 ¶ And as they were eating * 1 Cor. 11.22 24. I say unto you He shall not lose his reward 42 * Mat. 18.5 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that beleeve in me it is better for him that a milstone were hanged about his neck and he were cast into the sea 43 * Mat. 5.27 18.8 And if thy hand ‖ Or cause thee to offend offend thee cut it off it is better for thee to enter into life maimed then having two hands to go into hell into the fire that never shall be quenched 44 * Isa 66.24 Where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched 45 And if thy foot offend thee cut it off it is better for thee to enter halt into life then having two feet to be cast into hell into the fire that never shall be quenched 46 Where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched 47 And if thine eye ‖ Or cause t●●e to offend offend thee pluck it out it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye then having two eyes to be cast into hell fire 48 Where their worm dieth not and the fire is not quenched 49 For every one shall be salted with sire * Lev. 2.13 and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt 50 * Mat. 5.13 Salt is good but if the salt have lost his saltness wherewith will you leason it Have salt in your se●●es have peace one with another CHAP. X. 2 Christ disputeth with the Pharisees touching divorcement 13 blesseth the children that are brought unto him 17 resolveth a rich man how he may inherit ●●fe everlasting 23 telleth his disciples of the danger of riches 28 promiseth rewards to them that forsake any thing for the gospel 32 foretelleth his death and resurrection 35 biddeth the two ambitious suiters to think rather of suffering with him 45 and restoreth to Bartimeus his sight ANd * Mat. 19.1 he arose from thence and cometh into the coasts of Judea by the farther side of Jordan and the people resort unto him again and as he was wont he taught them again 2 ¶ And the Pharisees came to him and asked him Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife tempting him 3 And he answered said unto them What did Moses command you 4 And they said Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement and to put her away 5 And Jesus answered and said unto them For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept 6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife 8 And they twain shall be one flesh so then they are no more twain but one flesh 9 What therefore God hath joyned together let no man put asunder 10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter 11 And he said unto them * Mat. 5.32 19.9 Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another committeth adultery against her 12 And if a woman shall put away her husband and be married to another she committeth adultery 13 ¶ * Mat. 19.13 And they brought young children to him that he should touch them and his disciples rebuked those that brought them 14 But when Jesus saw it he was much displeased and said unto them Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of God 15 Verily I say unto you Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little childe he shall not enter therein 16 And he took them up in his arms put his hands upon them and blessed them 17 ¶ * Mat. 19.15 And when he was gone forth into the way there came one running and kneeled to him and asked him Good Master what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life 18 And Jesus said unto him Why callest thou me good there is none good but one that is God 19 Thou knowest the commandments Do not commit adultery Do not kill Do not steal Do not bear false witness Defraud not Honour thy father and mother 20 And he answered and said unto him Master all these have I observed from my youth 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him and said unto him One thing thou lackest go thy way sell whatsoever thou hast and give to the poor and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come take up the cross and follow me 22 And he was sad at that saying and went away grieved for he had great possessions 23 ¶ And Jesus looked round about and saith unto his disciples How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were astonished at his words But Jesus answereth again and saith unto them Children how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle then for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God 26 And they were astonished out of measure saying among themselves Who then can be saved 27 And Jesus looking upon them saith With men it is impossible but not with God for with God all things are possible 28 ¶ * Mat. 19.27 Then Peter began to say unto him Lo we have left all and have followed thee 29 And Jesus answered and said Verily I say unto you There is no man that hath left house or brethren or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands for my sake and the gospels 30 But he shall receive an hundred-sold now in this time houses and brethren and sisters and mothers and children and lands with persecutions and in the world to come eternal life 31 * Mat. 19.30 But many that are first shall be last and the last first 32 ¶ * Mat. 20.17 And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem and Jesus went before them and they were amazed and as they followed they were afraid And he took again the twelve and began to tell them what things should happen unto him 33 Saying Behold we go up to Jerusalem and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests and unto the scribes and they shall condemn him to death and shall deliver him to the Gentiles 34 And they shall mock him and shall scourge him and shall spit upon him and shall kill him and the third day he shall rise again 35 ¶ * Mat. 20 2● And James and John the sons of Zebedee come unto him saying Master we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire 36 And he said unto them What would ye that I should do for you 37 They said unto him Grant unto us that we may sit one on thy right hand and the other on thy left hand in thy glory 38 But Jesus said unto them Ye know not
what ye ask can ye drink of the cup that I drink of and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with 39 And they said unto him We can And Jesus said unto them Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized 40 But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared 41 And when the ten heard it they began to be much displeased with James and John 42 But Jesus called them to him and saith unto them * Luk. 22.23 Ye know that they which ‖ Or think good are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them and their great ones exercise authority upon them 43 But so shall it not be among you but whosoever will be great among you shall be your minister 44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest shall be servant of all 45 For even the Son of man came not to be administred unto but to minister and to give his life a ransom for many 46 ¶ * Mat. 20.19 And they came to Jericho and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people blinde Bartimeus the son of Timeus sat by the high-way-side begging 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth he began to cry out and say Jesus thou son of David have mercy on me 48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace but he cried the more a great deal Thou son of David have mercy on me 49 And Jesus stood still and commanded him to he called and they call the blinde man saying unto him Be of good comfort rise he calleth thee 50 And he casting away his garment rose and came to Jesus 51 And Jesus answered and said unto him What will thou that I should do unto thee The blinde man said unto him Lord that I might receive my sight 52 And Jesus said unto him Go thy way thy faith hath ‖ Or saved th●● made thee whole And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus in the way CHAP. XI 1 Christ rideth with triumph into Jerusalem 12 curseth the fruitless leafie tree 15 purgeth the temple 20 exhorteth his disciples to stedfastness of faith and to forgive their enemies 27 and defendeth the lawfulness of his actions by the witness of John who was a man sent of God ANd * Mat. 21.1 when they came nigh to Jerusalem unto Bethphage and Bethany at the mount of Olives he sendeth forth two of his disciples 2 And saith unto them Go your way into the village over against you and assoon as ye be entred into it ye shall finde a colt tied whereon never man sat loose him and bring him 3 And it any man say unto you Why do ye this say ye that the Lord hath need of him and straightway he will send him hither 4 And they went their way and sound the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met and they loose him 5 And certain of them that stood there said unto them What do ye loosing the colt 6 And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded and they let them go 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and cast their garments on him and he sat upon him 8 And many spread their garments in the way and others cut down branches off the trees and strawed them in the way 9 And they that went before and they that followed cried saying Hosanna blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. 10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David that cometh in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest 11 And Jesus entred into Jerusalem and into the temple and when he had looked round about upon all things and now the even-tide was come he went out unto Bethany with the twelve 12 ¶ And on the morrow when they were come from Bethany he was hungry 13 * Mat. 2● 19 And seeing a fig-tree asar off having leaves he came if haply he might finde any thing thereon and when he came to it he sound nothing but leaves for the time of figs was not yet 14 And Jesus answered and said unto it No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever And his disciples heard it 15 ¶ * Mat. 2● 12 And they come to Jerusalem and Jesus went into the temple and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple and overthrew the tables of the money-changers and the seats of them that sold doves 16 And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple 17 And he taught saying unto them Is it not written My house shall be called of all nations the house of Prayer but ye have made it a den of theeves 18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it and sought how they might destroy him for they feared him because all the people was astonished at his doctrine 19 And when even was come he went out of the city 20 ¶ * Mat. 21.19 And in the morning as they passed by they saw the fig-tree dried up from the roots 21 And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him Master behold the sig-tree which thou cursedst is withered away 22 And Jesus answering saith unto them ‖ Or Have the faith of God Have faith in God 23 For verily I say unto you that whosoever shall say unto this mountain Be thou removed and be thou cast into the sea and shall not doubt in his heart but shall beleeve that those things which he saith shall come to pass he shall have whatsoever he saith 24 Therefore I say unto you * Mat. 7.7 What things soever ye desire when ye pray beleeve that ye receive them and ye shall have them 25 And when ye stand praying * Mat. 6.14 forgive if ye have ought against any that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses 26 But if you do not forgive neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses 27 ¶ And they come against to Jerusalem * Mat. 21.23 and as he was walking in the temple there come to him the chief Priests and the scribes and the elders 28 And say unto him By what authority doest thou these things and who gave thee this authority to do these things 29 And Jesus answered and said unto them I will also ask of you one ‖ Or thing question and answer me and I will tell you by what authority I do these things 30 The baptism of John was it from heaven or of men answer me 31 And they reasoned with themselves saying If we shall say From heaven he will say Why then did ye not beleeve him 32 But if we shall say Of men they feared the people for all men
49 The children of Israel give an inheritance to Joshua ANd the second lot came forth to Simeon even for the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families and their inheritance was within the inheritance of the children of Judah 2 And they had in their inheritance Beer-sheba and Sheba and Moladah 3 And Hazar-shual and Balah and Azem 4 And Eltolad and Bethul and Hormah 5 And Ziklag and Beth-marcaboth and Hazar-susah 6 And Beth-lebaoth and Sharuhen thirteen cities and their villages 7 Ain Remmon and Ether and Ashan four cities their villages 8 And all the villages that were round about these cities to Baalath-beer Ramath of the south This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Simeon according to their families 9 Out of the portion of the children of Judah was the inheritance of the children of Simeon for the part of the children of Judah was too much for them therefore the children of Simeon had their inheritance within the inheritance of them 10 ¶ And the third lot came up for the children of Zebulun according to their families and the border of their inheritance was unto Sarid 11 And their border went up toward the sea and Maralah and reached to Dabasheth and reached to the river that is before Jokneam 12 And turned from Sarid east-ward toward the sun-rising unto the border of Chisloth-tabor and then goeth out to Daberath and goeth up to Japhia 13 And from thence passeth on along on the east to Gittah-hepher to Ittah-kazin and goeth out to Remmon ‖ Or whicht● drawn methoar to Neah 14 And the border compasseth it on the north-side to Hannathon and the out-goings thereof are in the valley of Jiphthah-el 15 And Kattath and Nahallal and Shimron and Idalah and Bethlehem twelve cities with their villages 16 This is the inheritance of the children of Zebulun according to their families these cities with their villages 17 ¶ And the fourth lot came out to Issachar for the children of Issachar according to their families 18 And their border was toward Jezreel and Chesulloth Shunem 19 And Hapharaim and Shihon and Anaharath 20 And Rabbith and Kishion and Abez 21 And Remeth and Engannim and En-haddah and Beth-pazzer 22 And the coast reacheth to Tabor and Shahazimah and Beth-shemesh and the out-goings of their border were at Jordan sixteen cities with their villages 23 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Issachar according to their families the cities and their villages 24 ¶ And the fifth lot came out for the tribe of the children of Asher according to their families 25 And their border was Helkath and Hali and Beten Achshaph 26 And Alammelech and Amad and Misheal and reacheth to Carmel west-ward and to Shihor-libnath 27 And turneth toward the sun-rising to Beth-dagon and reacheth to Zebulun and to the valley of Jiphthah-el toward the north-side of Beth-emek and Neiel and goeth out to Cabul on the left hand 28 And Hebron and Rehob and Hammon and Kanah even unto great Zidon 29 And then the coast turneth to Ramah and to the strong city † Heb. XX. 1 God commandeth 7 and the children of Israel appoint the six cities of refuge THe LORD also spake unto Jeshua saying 2 Speak to the children of Israel saying * Ex. 21.13 Num. 35.6 11 14. Deut. 19.2 Appoint out for you cities of refuge whereof I spake unto you by the hand or Moses 3 That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of bloud 4 And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entring of the gate of the city and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city they shall take him into the city unto them and give him a place that he may dwell among them 5 And if the avenger of bloud pursue after him then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand because he smote his neighbour unwittingly and hated him not before time 6 And he shall dwell in that city until he
enemies 15 Whithersoever they went out the hand of the LORD was against them for evil as the LORD had said and * Lev. 25. Deu. 28. as the LORD had sworn unto them and they were greatly distressed 16 ¶ Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges which † Heb. saved delivered them out of the hand of those that spoiled them 17 And yet they would not hearken unto their judges but they went a whoring after other gods and bowed themselves unto them they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in obeying the commandments of the LORD but they did not so 18 And when the LORD raised them up judges then the LORD was with the judge and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them 19 And it came to pass * Ch. 3.12 when the judge was dead that they returned and ‖ Or were corrupt corrupted themselves more then their fathers in sollowing other gods to serve them and to bow down unto them † Heb. they let nothing fall of their they ceased not from their own doings nor from their stubborn way 20 ¶ And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel and he said Because that this People hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers and have not hearkned unto my voice 21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died 22 That through them I may prove Israel whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein as their fathers did keep it or not 23 Therefore the LORD ‖ Or suffered left those nations without driving them out hastily neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua CHAP. III. 1 The nations which were left to prove Israel 5 By communion with them they commit idolatry 8 Othniel delivereth them from Chushan-rishathaim 12 Ebud from E●lon 21 Sham●ar from the Philistines NOw these are the nations which the LORD left to prove Israel by them even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan 2 Onely that the generations of the children of Israel might know to teach them war at the least such as before knew nothing thereof 3 Namely five lords of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon from mount Baal-hermon unto the entring in of Hamath 4 And they we●● to prove Israel by them to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses 5 ¶ And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites Hittites and Amorites and Perizzites and Hivites and Jebusites 6 And they took their daughters to be their wives and gave their daughters to their sons and served their gods 7 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD and forgat the LORD their God and served Baalim and the groves 8 ¶ Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel and he sold them into the hand of Chushan-rishathaim king of † Heb. Aram nabara●m Mesopotamia and the children of Israel served Chushan-rishathaim eight years 9 And when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD the LORD raised up a † Heb. saviour deliverer to the children of Israel who delivered them even Othmel the son of Kenaz Calebs younger brother 10 And the spirit of the LORD † Heb. was came upon him and he judged Israel and went out to war and the LORD delivered Chushan-rishathaim king of † Heb. Aaram Mesopotamia into his hand and his hand prevailed against Chushan-rishathaim 11 And the land had rest fourty years and Othniel the son of Kenaz died 12 ¶ And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD and the LORD strengthned Eglon the king of Moab against Israel because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD 13 And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek and went and smote Israel and possessed the city of palm-trees 14 So the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years 15 But when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD the LORD raised them up a deliverer Ehud the son of Gera ‖ Or the son of Jemini a Benjamite a man † Heb. shut of his right hand left-handed and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab 16 But Ehud made him a dagger which had two edges of a cubit length and he did gird it under his raiment upon his right thigh 17 And he brought the present unto Eglon king of Moab and Eglon was a very fat man 18 And when he had made an end to offer the present he sent away the people that bare the present 19 But he himself turned again from the ‖ Or graven images quarries that were by Gilgal and said I have a secret errand unto thee O king who said Keep silence And all that stood by him went out from him 20 And Ehud came unto him and he was sitting in † Heb. a parlour of cooling a summer-parlour which he had for himself alone and Ehud said I have a message from God unto thee And he arose out of his seat 21 And Ehud put forth his left hand and took the dagger from his right thigh and thrust it into his belly 22 And the haft also went in after the blade and the fat closed upon the blade so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly and ‖ Or it came out at the fundament the dirt came out 23 The Ehud went forth through the porch and shut the doors of the parlour upon him and locked them 24 When he was gone out his servants came and when they saw that behold the doors of the parlour were locked they said Surely he ‖ Or doth his ●asement covereth his feet in his summer-chamber 25 And they tarried till they were ashamed and behold he opened not the doors of the parlour therefore they took a key and opened them and behold their lord was faln down dead on the earth 26 And Ehud escaped while they tarried and passed beyond the quarries and escaped unto Seirath 27 And it came to pass when he was come that he blew a trumpet in the mountain of Ephraim and the children of Israel went down with him from the mount and he before them 28 And he said unto them Follow after me for the LORD hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand And they went down after him and took the fords of Jordan toward Moab and suffered not a man to pass over 29 ¶ And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men all † Heb. fet Iusty and all men of

III. 1 They of the sea-coasts intreat for peace 7 Holofernes is received there 8 Yet he destroyeth their gods that they might worship onely Nabuchodonosor 9 He cometh near to Judea SO they sent ambassadours unto him to treat of peace saying 2 Behold we the servants of Nabuchodonosor the great king lie before thee use us as shall be good in thy sight 3 Behold our houses and all our places and all our fields of wheat and flocks and herds and all the lodges of our tents lie before thy face use them as it pleaseth thee 4 Behold even our cities and the inhabitants thereof are thy servants come and deal with them as seemeth good unto thee 5 So the men came to Holofernes and declared unto him after this manner 6 Then came he down toward the sea-coast both he and his army and set garisons in the high cities and took out of them chosen men for aid 7 So they and all the countrey round about received them with garlands with dances and with timbrels 8 Yet he did cast down their frontiers and cut down their groves for he had decreed to destroy all the gods of the land that all Nations should worship Nabuchodonosor onely and that all tongues and tribes should call upon him as god 9 Also he came over against ‖ Or Es●●elom Esdraelon near unto ‖ Or Do●u Dothan Junius Gen. 37.17 Judea over against the † Gr. great sea great strait of Judea 10 And he pitched between Geba and Scythopolis and there he tarried a whole moneth that he might gather together all the carriages of his army CHAP. IV. 4 The Jews are afraid of Holofernes 5 and fortifie the hills 6 They of Bethulia take charge of the passages 9 All Israel fall to fasting and prayer NOw the children of Israel that dwelt in Judea heard all that Holofernes the chief captain of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians had done to the nations and after what manner he had spoiled all their temples and brought them to nought 2 Therefore they were exceedingly afraid of him and were troubled for Jerusalem and for the temple of the Lord their God 3 For they were newly returned from the captivity and all the people ‖ Or out of Judea of Judea were lately gathered together and the vessels and the altar and the house were sanctified after the profanation 4 Therefore they sent into all the coasts of Samaria and the villages and to Bethoron and Belmen and Jericho and to Choba and Esora and to the valley of Salem 5 And possessed themselves before-hand of all the tops of the high mountains and fortified the villages that were in them and laid up victuals for the provision of war for their fields were of late reaped 6 Also Joacim the hig●-priest which was in those days in Jerusalem wrote to them that ●●elt in Bethulia and Betomestham which is over against ‖ Or Esdredom Esdraelon toward the ‖ Or plain open countrey near to Dothaim 7 Charging them to keep the passages of the hill-countrey for by them there was an entrance into Judea and it was easie to stop them that would come up because the passage was strait ‖ Or two against all for two men at the most 8 And the children of Israel did as Joacim the high priest had commanded them with the ‖ Or ●o●●●nours ancients of all the people of Israel which dwelt at Jerusalem 9 Then every man of Israel cried to God with great servency and with great vehemency did they humble their souls 10 Both they and their wives and their children and their cattel and every stranger and hireling and their servants bought with money put sackcloth upon their loyns 11 Thus every man and woman and the little children and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the temple and cast ashes upon their heads and spread out their sackcloth before the face of the Lord also they put sackcloth about the altar 12 And cried to the God of Israel all with one consent earnestly that he would not give their children for a prey and their wives for a spoil and the cities of their inheritance to destruction and the sanctuary to profanation and reproach and for the nations to rejoyce at 13 So God heard their prayers and looked upon their afflictions for the people fasted many days in all Judea and Jerusalem before the sanctuary of the Lord Almighty 14 And Joacim the high priest and all the priests that stood before the Lord and they which ministred unto the Lord had their loyns girf with sackcloth and offered the daily burnt-offerings with the vows and free-gifts of the people 15 And had ashes on their mitres and cried unto the Lord with all their power that he would look upon all the house of Israel graciously CHAP. V. ● Achior telleth Holofernes what the Jews are 8 and what their God had done for them 2● and adviseth not to meddle with them 22 All that heard him were offended at him THen was it declared to Holofernes the chief captain of the army of Assur that the children of Israel had prepared for war and had shut up the passages of the hill-countrey and had fortified † Gr. all the top all the tops of the high
entred into the house from the people his disciples asked him concerning the parable 18 And he saith unto them Are ye so without understanding also Do ye not perceive that whatsoever thing from without entreth into the man it cannot defile him 19 Because it entreth not into his heart but into the belly and goeth out into the draught purging all meats 20 And he said That which cometh out of the man that defileth the man 21 * Gen. 6.5 8.21 Mat. 15.19 For from within out of the heart of men proceed evil thoughts adulteries fornications murders 22 Thefts coveteousness wickedness deceit lasciviousness an evil eye blasphemy pride foolishness 23 All these evil things come from within and defile the man 24 ¶ * Mat. 15.21 And from thence he arose and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon and entred into an house and would have no man know it but he could not be hid 25 For a certain woman whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell at his feet 26 The woman was a ‖ Or Gentile Greek a Syrophenician by nation and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter 27 But Jesus said unto her Let the children first be filled for it is not meet to take the childrens bread and to cast it unto the dogs 28 And she answered and said unto him Yes Lord yet the dogs under the table eat of the childrens crumbs 29 And he said unto her For this saying go thy way the devil is gone out of thy daughter 30 And when she was come to her house she found the devil gone out and her daughter laid upon the bed 31 ¶ And again departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon he came unto the sea of Galilee through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis 32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf and had an impediment in his speech and they beseech him to put his hand upon him 33 And he took him aside from the multitude and put his fingers into his ears and he spit and touched his tongue 34 And looking up to heaven he sighed and saith unto him Ephphatha that is Be opened 35 And straightway his ears were opened and the string of his tongue was loosed and he spake plain 36 And he charged them that they should tell no man but the more he charged them so much the more a great deal they published it 37 And were beyond measure astonished saying He hath done all things well he maketh both the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak CHAP. VIII 1 Christ feedeth the people miraculously 10 refuseth to give a signe to the Pharisees 14 admonisheth his disciples to beware of the leaven of the Pharis●es and of the leaven of Herod 22 giveth a blinde man his sight 27 acknowledgeth that he is the Christ who should suffer and rise again 34 and exhorteth to patience in persecution for the profession of the gospel IN those days * Mat. ●5 32 the multitude being very great and having nothing to eat Jesus called his disciples unto him and saith unto them 2 I have compassion on the multitude because they have now been with me three days and have nothing to eat 3 And if I send them away ●a●ing to their own houses they will faint by the way for divers of them came from far 4 And his disciples answered him From whence can a man satisfie these men with bread here in the wilderness 5 And he asked them How many loaves have ye And they said Seven 6 And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground and he took the seven loaves and gave thanks and brake and gave to his disciples to set before them and they did set them before the people 7 And they had a few small fishes and he blessed and commanded to set them also before them 8 So they did eat and were filled and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets 9 And they that had eaten were about four thousand and he sent them away 10 ¶ And straightway he entred into a ship with his disciples and came into the parts of Dalmanutha 11 * Mat. 16.1 And the Pharisees came forth and began to question with him seeking of him a signe from heaven tempting him 12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit and saith Why doth this generation seek after a signe verily I say unto you There shall no signe be given to this generation 13 And he left them and entring into the ship again departed to the other side 14 ¶ * Mat. 16.5 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread neither had they in the ship with them more then one loaf 15 And he charged them saying Take heed beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod 16 And they reasoned among themselves saying It is * Mat. 16.7 because we have no bread 17 And when Jesus knew it he saith unto them Why reason ye because ye have no bread ● perceive ye not yet neither understand have ye your heart yet hardned 18 Having eyes see ye not and having ears hear ye not and do ye not remember 19 When I brake the five loaves among five thousand how many baskets full of fragments took ye up they say unto him Twelve 20 And when the seven among four thousand how many baskets full of fragments took ye up And they said Seven 21 And he said unto them How is it that ye do not understand 22 ¶ And he cometh to Bethsaida and they bring a blinde man unto him and besought him to touch him 23 And he took the blinde man by the hand and led him out of the town and when he had spit on his eyes and put his hands upon him he asked him if he saw ought 24 And he looked up and said I see men as trees walking 25 After that he put his hands again upon his eyes and made him look up and he was restored and saw every man clearly 26 And he sent him away to his house saying Neither go into the town nor tell it to any in the town 27 ¶ * Mat. ●● 13 And Jesus went out and his disciples into the towns of Cesarea Philippi and by the way he asked his disciples saying unto them Whom do men say that I am 28 And they answered John the Baptist but some say Elias and others One of the prophets 29 And he saith unto them But whom say ye that I am And Peter answereth and saith unto him Thou art the Christ 30 And he charged them that they should tell no man of him 31 And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things and be rejected of the elders and of the chief priests and scribes and be killed and after three days rise again 32 And he spake that saying openly And Peter took him and began
supper and preacheth 9 Eutychus having faln down dead 10 is raised to life 17 At Miletus he calleth the elders together telleth them what shall befal to himself 28 committeth Gods flock to them 29 warneth them of false teachers 22 commendeth them to God 36 prayeth with them and goeth his way ANd after the uproar was ceased Paul called unto him the disciples and embraced them and departed for to go into Macedonia 2 And when he had gone over those parts and had given them much exhortation he came into Greece 3 And there abode three moneths when the Jews laid wait for him as he was about to sail into Syria he purposed to return through Macedonia 4 And there accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea and of the Thessalonians Aristarchus and Secundus and Gaius of Derbe and Timotheus and of Asia Tychicus and Trophimus 5 These going before tarried for us at Troas 6 And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread and came unto them to Troas in five days where we abode seven days 7 And upon the first day of the week when the disciples came together * Chap. 2.45 to break bread Paul preached unto them ready to depart on the morrow and continued his speech until midnight 8 And there were many lights in the upper chamber where they were gathered together 9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus being faln into a deep sleep and as Paul was long preaching he sunk down with sleep fell down from the third loft was taken up dead 10 And Paul went down and fell on him and embracing him said Trouble not your selves for his life is in him 11 When he therefore was come up again and had broken bread eaten and talked a long while even till break of day so he departed 12 And they brought the young man alive and were not a little comforted 13 ¶ And we went before to ship and sailed unto Assos there intending to take in Paul for so had he appointed minding himself to go a foot 14 And when he met with us at Assos we took him in and came to Mytilene 15 And we sailed thence and came the next day over against Chios and the next day we arrived at Samos and tarried at Trogyllium and the next day we came to Miletus 16 For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus because he would not spend the time in Asia for he halted if it were possible for him to be at Jerusalem the day of Pentecost 17 ¶ And from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church 18 And when they were come to him he said unto them Ye know from the first day that I came into Asia after what manner I have been with you at all seasons 19 Serving the Lord with all humility of minde with many tears and temptations which befel me by the lying in wait of the Jews 20 And how I kept back nothing the was profitable unto you but have shewed you and have taught you publickly and from house to house 21 Testifying both to the Jews and also to the Greeks repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ 22 And now behold I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem not knowing the things that shall befal me there 23 Save that the holy Ghost witnesseth in every city saying that bonds and afflictions ‖ Or wait for me abide me 24 But none of these things move me neither count I my life dear unto my self so that I might finish my course with joy and the ministery which I have received of the Lord Jesus to testifie the gospel of the grace of God 25 And now behold I know that ye all among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God shall see my face no more 26 Wherefore I take you to record this day that I am pure from the bloud of all men 27 For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God 28 ¶ Take heed therefore unto your selves and to all the flock over the which the holy Ghost hath made you overseers to feed the church of God which he hath purchased with his own bloud 29 For I know this that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you not sparing the flock 30 Also of your own selves shall men arise speaking perverse things to draw away disciples after them 31 Therefore watch and remember that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears 32 And now brethren I commend you to God and to the word of his grace which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified 33 I have coveted no mans silver or gold or apparel 34 Yea you yourselves know * 1 Cor. 4.12 1 Thes 2.9 2 Thes 2.8 that these hands have ministred unto my necessities and to them that were with me 35 I have shewed you all things how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus how he said It is more blessed to give then to receive 36 ¶ And when he had thus spoken he kneeled down and prayed with them all 37 And they all wept sore and fell on Pauls neck and kissed him 38 Sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake that they should see his face no more And they accompanied him unto the ship CHAP. XXI Paul will not by any means be disswaded from going to Jerusalem 9 Philips daughters prophetesses 17 Paul cometh to Jerusalem 27 where he is apprehended and in great danger 31 but by the chief captain is rescued and permitted to speak to the people ANd it came to pass that after we were gotten from them and had lauched we came with a straight course unto ●o●s and the day following unto Rhodes and from thence unto Patara 2 And finding a ship salling over unto Phenicia we went aboard and set forth 3 Now when we had discovered Cyprus we left it on the left hand and sailed into Syria and landed at Tyre for there the ship was to unlade her burden 4 And finding disciples we tarried there seven days who said to Paul through the Spirit that he should not go up to Jerusalem 5 And when we had accomplished those days we departed and went our way and they all brought us on our way with wives and children till we were out of the city we kneeled down on the shore prayed 6 And when we had taken our leave one of another we took ship and they returned home again 7 And when we had finished our course from Tyre we came to Ptolemais and sluted the brethren and abode with them one day 8 And the next day we that were of Pauls company departed and came unto Cesarea and we entred into the house of Philip the evangelist * Cha●
