for_o the_o person_n salute_v here_o then_o be_v many_o kind_n of_o salutation_n censure_v first_o the_o profane_a salutation_n of_o swear_v swaggerer_n profane_a not_o profane_a and_o rude_a ruffian_n which_o be_v not_o any_o holy_a form_n or_o prayer_n unto_o god_n but_o a_o most_o fearful_a tear_v and_o rend_v of_o the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o piece_n by_o most_o horrible_a oath_n second_o the_o perfidious_a salvation_n such_o a_o one_o perfidious_a not_o perfidious_a as_o judas_n his_o be_v who_o betray_v his_o master_n with_o a_o kiss_n and_o joabs_n who_o cloak_v his_o inward_a malice_n with_o sweet_a and_o sugar_a salutation_n most_o villanous_o murder_v valiant_a abner_n even_o in_o the_o act_n of_o salute_v three_o the_o formal_a and_o customary_a and_o with_o formal_a not_o formal_a all_o nice_a curious_a and_o affect_a kind_n of_o salute_v when_o man_n be_v so_o full_a of_o their_o ceremony_n and_o compliment_n that_o they_o make_v themselves_o foolish_a and_o ridiculous_a and_o herein_o consist_v all_o their_o grace_n of_o their_o greeting_n in_o court_v and_o congey_v and_o duck_v and_o such_o other_o gesture_n but_o that_o which_o be_v the_o very_a pith_n and_o marrow_n of_o a_o christian_a salutation_n the_o lift_v up_o of_o the_o heart_n to_o god_n in_o desire_v the_o welfare_n of_o those_o they_o salute_v be_v whole_o want_v gesture_n in_o salute_v be_v good_a and_o commendable_a so_o they_o may_v stand_v with_o comeliness_n and_o the_o simplicity_n of_o christianity_n but_o this_o be_v a_o fault_n even_o in_o many_o who_o yet_o be_v not_o so_o fond_a and_o so_o full_a of_o affectation_n in_o their_o salutation_n as_o other_o that_o in_o salute_v their_o brethren_n with_o those_o good_a and_o holy_a form_n in_o common_a use_n as_o god_n be_v with_o you_o god_n save_v you_o etc._n etc._n they_o take_v the_o holy_a name_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a not_o have_v their_o heart_n lift_v up_o to_o god_n who_o name_n they_o call_v upon_o but_o only_o speak_v of_o custom_n and_o so_o not_o mind_v what_o they_o say_v a_o fault_n in_o most_o and_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o humiliation_n unto_o we_o as_o be_v a_o argument_n both_o of_o the_o want_n of_o fear_n to_o god_n and_o love_n to_o our_o neighbour_n salutation_n be_v prayer_n to_o the_o lord_n and_o therefore_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n must_v with_o all_o reverence_n be_v think_v upon_o when_o they_o be_v use_v some_o hence_o take_v occasion_n to_o neglect_v this_o duty_n because_o they_o be_v prayer_n and_o they_o think_v it_o not_o lawful_a to_o wish_v well_o in_o prayer_n to_o every_o one_o we_o meet_v who_o sometime_o may_v haply_o be_v go_v about_o some_o wicked_a enterprise_n but_o beside_o that_o charity_n bid_v we_o to_o think_v and_o hope_v the_o best_a in_o matter_n of_o uncertainty_n they_o shall_v have_v remember_v that_o of_o our_o saviour_n luke_n 10._o into_o whatsoever_o house_n you_o go_v say_v peace_n be_v unto_o this_o house_n and_o if_o the_o son_n of_o peace_n be_v in_o the_o house_n your_o peace_n shall_v come_v upon_o it_o if_o not_o your_o peace_n shall_v return_v upon_o you_o so_o then_o there_o be_v no_o hurt_n do_v whosoever_o we_o salute_v so_o it_o be_v not_o a_o notorious_a heretic_n or_o some_o such_o offender_n not_o much_o unlike_a 2._o joh._n but_o if_o we_o salute_v the_o child_n of_o god_n we_o do_v good_a to_o they_o our_o salutation_n be_v effectual_a mean_n through_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n to_o bring_v upon_o they_o the_o good_a desire_a if_o other_o we_o do_v good_a to_o ourselves_o that_o good_a we_o desire_v to_o they_o shall_v be_v grant_v to_o ourselves_o the_o sum_n then_o of_o this_o whole_a point_n of_o salutation_n in_o a_o word_n be_v thus_o much_o first_o that_o we_o conscionable_o perform_v this_o duty_n both_o by_o word_n and_o writing_n superior_n to_o their_o inferior_n as_o well_o as_o on_o the_o contrary_a even_o king_n to_o their_o subject_n to_o stranger_n as_o well_o as_o to_o those_o of_o our_o acquaintance_n luk._n 10._o 2._o that_o we_o do_v it_o in_o a_o holy_a manner_n feel_v our_o heart_n with_o reverence_n both_o affect_v to_o god_n and_o enlarge_v in_o love_n to_o our_o brethren_n thus_o much_o in_o general_n in_o this_o salutation_n more_o particular_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v these_o two_o point_n 1._o the_o thing_n that_o paul_n wish_v 1._o grace_n 2._o peace_n 2._o from_o who_o he_o wish_v they_o 1._o from_o god_n the_o father_n 2._o from_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n first_o for_o the_o thing_n desire_v the_o former_a of_o they_o be_v grace_n this_o word_n grace_n often_o be_v take_v for_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n by_o a_o metonymy_n of_o the_o efficient_a because_o they_o come_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o grace_n and_o free_a favour_n of_o god_n as_o john_n 1._o 16._o and_o of_o his_o fullness_n have_v we_o all_o receive_a take_v grace_n how_o take_v grace_n upon_o grace_n and_o verse_n 17._o grace_n and_o truth_n come_v by_o jesus_n christ_n and_o 2._o cor._n 12._o my_o grace_n be_v sufficient_a for_o thou_o but_o this_o grace_n be_v not_o here_o principal_o mean_v by_o the_o apostle_n in_o this_o place_n therefore_o there_o be_v a_o second_o and_o that_o more_o proper_a signification_n of_o this_o word_n grace_n for_o the_o favour_n and_o good_a will_n of_o god_n as_o ephes_n 2._o 8._o for_o by_o grace_n be_v you_o save_v through_o faith_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o here_o the_o apostle_n wish_v to_o philemon_z now_o this_o grace_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n be_v twofold_a first_o that_o favour_n of_o god_n whereby_o he_o purpose_v love_n two_o degree_n of_o god_n love_n to_o make_v we_o capable_a of_o his_o favour_n and_o fit_a to_o be_v favour_v of_o he_o when_o as_o in_o ourselves_o there_o be_v no_o matter_n of_o favour_n but_o only_o of_o displeasure_n the_o give_v of_o christ_n unto_o we_o and_o all_o the_o benefit_n which_o we_o receive_v in_o christ_n be_v make_v fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o this_o favour_n rom_n 5._o 15._o much_o more_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o gift_n by_o grace_n have_v abound_v to_o many_o the_o gift_n by_o grace_n be_v justification_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n a_o man_n will_v think_v we_o can_v not_o be_v in_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n till_o christ_n have_v reconcile_v us._n i_o but_o that_o christ_n be_v give_v unto_o we_o to_o be_v our_o reconciler_n whence_o come_v this_o but_o of_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n namely_o this_o first_o kind_n of_o favour_n whereby_o god_n go_v about_o to_o fit_v and_o prepare_v we_o for_o his_o favour_n so_o the_o apostle_n direct_o affirm_v rom._n 5._o god_n set_v out_o his_o love_n unto_o we_o that_o when_o we_o be_v sinner_n christ_n die_v for_o we_o and_o christ_n himself_o joh._n 3._o 16._o god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o send_v his_o only_o beget_v son_n which_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o such_o a_o kind_n of_o love_n and_o favour_n whereby_o he_o be_v willing_a as_o it_o be_v and_o desirous_a to_o favour_v we_o and_o not_o otherwise_o for_o how_o then_o can_v we_o be_v say_v to_o be_v reconcile_v to_o god_n by_o christ_n if_o before_o we_o be_v actual_o in_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o of_o this_o grace_n our_o election_n be_v make_v a_o fruit_n ephes_n 1._o 5_o 6._o who_o have_v predestinate_v we_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o grace_n whereby_o he_o have_v free_o make_v we_o accept_v in_o his_o belove_a that_o be_v whereby_o he_o have_v predestinate_v us._n second_o there_o be_v another_o degree_n of_o god_n favour_n when_o have_v a_o desire_n to_o favour_v we_o and_o a_o free_a disposition_n to_o do_v we_o good_a and_o because_o it_o will_v not_o stand_v with_o his_o justice_n to_o favour_v the_o vile_a and_o abominable_a have_v further_o of_o his_o own_o good_a pleasure_n in_o christ_n fit_v we_o for_o his_o favour_n he_o do_v now_o take_v a_o singular_a pleasure_n and_o delight_n in_o us._n so_o then_o there_o be_v a_o favour_n whereby_o god_n make_v we_o as_o i_o may_v say_v favourable_a such_o as_o may_v be_v favour_v and_o it_o be_v the_o description_n of_o the_o apostle_n himself_o ephes_n 1._o 6._o by_o the_o which_o grace_n he_o have_v make_v we_o accept_v and_o there_o be_v a_o further_a favour_n whereby_o have_v make_v we_o accept_v that_o be_v such_o as_o may_v be_v accept_v he_o do_v indeed_o accept_v we_o and_o be_v exceed_o well_o please_v with_o us._n this_o may_v be_v call_v the_o favour_n of_o complacency_n
dead_a and_o deject_a spirit_n which_o paul_n right_o well_o know_v have_v command_v we_o to_o rejoice_v and_o that_o evermore_o even_o in_o our_o affliction_n 1_o thess_n 5._o 16._o 17._o add_v immediate_o a_o commandment_n of_o pray_v continual_o as_o the_o only_a special_a and_o sovereign_a mean_n whereby_o sound_a joy_n and_o comfort_n be_v carry_v and_o convey_v into_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n will_v we_o then_o rejoice_v and_o refresh_v our_o spirit_n cast_v down_o and_o lift_v they_o up_o again_o with_o consolatory_a meditation_n see_v then_o that_o thou_o remember_v the_o apostle_n rule_v to_o pray_v continual_o and_o in_o prayer_n to_o acquaint_v god_n with_o those_o thy_o meditation_n prayer_n be_v that_o which_o wringe_v and_o press_v out_o that_o sweet_a ivyce_n and_o precious_a liquor_n of_o that_o heavenly_a comfort_n which_o be_v contain_v in_o they_o they_o be_v the_o sigh_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o prayer_n that_o fetch_v out_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o word_n and_o to_o they_o only_o and_o to_o no_o other_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o word_n comfortable_a in_o affliction_n who_o in_o prayer_n can_v utter_v they_o to_o the_o lord_n with_o the_o same_o spirit_n wherewithal_o the_o holy_a ghost_n secretary_n write_v they_o and_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o many_o learned_a man_n which_o know_v the_o comfort_n of_o the_o word_n yet_o reap_v no_o benefit_n by_o they_o because_o they_o want_v the_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n to_o utter_v they_o this_o one_o meditation_n of_o the_o blessedness_n of_o the_o man_n chastise_v and_o teach_v by_o god_n yield_v comfort_n only_o to_o he_o who_o with_o this_o holy_a prophet_n can_v in_o the_o apprehension_n of_o this_o meditation_n advance_v his_o heart_n to_o god_n and_o say_v bless_a be_v the_o man_n who_o thou_o chastize_v o_o lord_n etc._n etc._n and_o sure_o good_a reason_n be_v there_o if_o we_o right_o consider_v of_o it_o that_o matter_n of_o comfort_n conceive_v in_o our_o heart_n shall_v be_v utter_v in_o prayer_n unto_o the_o lord_n for_o whence_o be_v it_o that_o any_o matter_n of_o comfort_n come_v into_o thy_o mind_n be_v it_o not_o of_o god_n who_o have_v this_o as_o part_v of_o his_o style_n to_o be_v the_o god_n of_o comfort_n be_v it_o not_o he_o that_o pour_v those_o comfort_n into_o thy_o soul_n good_a reason_n than_o thou_o shall_v again_o pour_v they_o forth_o into_o his_o bosom_n and_o return_v they_o back_o to_o he_o that_o be_v the_o father_n and_o fountain_n of_o they_o and_o in_o truth_n such_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o spiritual_a comfort_n that_o be_v shed_v into_o our_o heart_n it_o so_o enlarge_n and_o dilate_v they_o that_o it_o make_v they_o to_o pour_v forth_o themselves_o in_o prayer_n unto_o the_o lord_n the_o sweet_a comfortable_a ray_n of_o this_o sun_n when_o once_o they_o have_v light_v upon_o our_o heart_n by_o our_o read_n and_o meditate_v in_o the_o word_n do_v forthwith_o again_o rebound_v and_o reflect_v back_o upon_o god_n from_o who_o they_o come_v by_o our_o earnest_n and_o fervent_a prayer_n send_v up_o to_o he_o and_o therefore_o no_o soon_o can_v the_o lord_n minister_v a_o answer_n to_o the_o objection_n which_o rise_v in_o the_o prophet_n mind_n out_o of_o his_o former_a argument_n of_o consolation_n but_o the_o prophet_n forthwith_o as_o you_o see_v return_n this_o answer_n to_o the_o author_n thereof_o therein_o give_v he_o the_o glory_n of_o that_o comfort_n which_o he_o reap_v by_o it_o say_v bless_a be_v the_o man_n etc._n etc._n so_o much_o of_o the_o scope_n and_o coherence_n of_o the_o text_n the_o word_n themselves_o contain_v a_o attribution_n of_o blessedness_n to_o the_o man_n chastise_v of_o god_n and_o teach_v by_o he_o in_o his_o law_n in_o the_o man_n therefore_o here_o pronounce_v bless_v two_o thing_n be_v propound_v 1._o he_o be_v one_o of_o god_n chastise_v 2._o he_o be_v one_o of_o god_n teach_v and_o here_o for_o the_o right_a understanding_n of_o the_o word_n we_o must_v remember_v that_o blessedness_n be_v give_v in_o both_o these_o respect_n joint_o together_o and_o not_o several_o in_o regard_n of_o each_o the_o prophet_n meaning_n be_v not_o that_o he_o who_o be_v chastise_v of_o god_n be_v bless_v and_o so_o also_o he_o that_o be_v teach_v of_o god_n but_o that_o he_o in_o who_o both_o these_o meet_v together_o to_o be_v both_o chastise_v and_o teach_v of_o god_n that_o such_o a_o one_o be_v bless_v in_o the_o handle_n of_o the_o word_n i_o will_v speak_v of_o these_o two_o point_n 1._o of_o the_o quality_n of_o the_o man_n here_o bless_v by_o the_o prophet_n 2._o of_o that_o blessedness_n which_o here_o be_v ascribe_v unto_o he_o in_o regard_n of_o those_o quality_n for_o the_o first_o the_o quality_n be_v two_o 1._o he_o be_v chastise_v of_o god_n here_o it_o may_v seem_v strange_a that_o the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o affliction_n which_o come_v by_o wicked_a man_n unto_o the_o church_n as_o appear_v by_o the_o former_a part_n of_o the_o psalm_n shall_v yet_o ascribe_v they_o unto_o god_n but_o we_o must_v know_v that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o prophet_n meaning_n hereby_o any_o thing_n at_o all_o to_o excuse_v the_o wicked_a persecutor_n who_o beside_o the_o evil_a of_o punishment_n in_o correct_v the_o church_n which_o be_v god_n just_a and_o holy_a work_n be_v to_o be_v charge_v with_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n in_o that_o they_o do_v this_o work_n of_o god_n blind_o and_o ignorant_o propound_v to_o themselves_o the_o satisfy_a of_o their_o own_o malicious_a and_o spiteful_a affection_n as_o the_o only_a end_n of_o that_o they_o do_v and_o no_o such_o thing_n as_o god_n intend_v what_o then_o sure_o hereby_o he_o will_v teach_v we_o that_o god_n holy_a doct._n hand_n have_v a_o special_a stroke_n in_o those_o affliction_n which_o come_v to_o his_o church_n and_o child_n even_o by_o mean_n of_o evil_a and_o unreasonable_a man_n be_v there_o any_o evil_n in_o the_o city_n and_o i_o have_v not_o do_v it_o amos_n 3._o 6._o and_o yet_o we_o know_v that_o many_o if_o not_o most_o evil_n be_v do_v by_o some_o bad_a man_n or_o other_o but_o for_o all_o that_o god_n will_v have_v all_o acknowledge_v as_o his_o own_o do_v hereupon_o joseph_n though_o of_o his_o envious_a brethren_n sell_v into_o egypt_n say_v that_o god_n send_v he_o thither_o and_o job_n rob_v patient_o suffer_v the_o stroke_n of_o death_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o base_a executioner_n therein_o show_v their_o subjection_n and_o obedience_n to_o their_o prince_n so_o must_v we_o patient_o and_o meek_o endure_v all_o the_o indignity_n and_o injury_n of_o wicked_a worldly_a man_n therein_o give_v testimony_n of_o our_o obedience_n to_o god_n who_o use_v they_o as_o instrument_n of_o his_o
justice_n to_o correct_v us._n in_o correction_n come_v immediate_o from_o god_n hand_n we_o be_v not_o ordinary_o so_o impatient_a as_o in_o those_o which_o come_v by_o mean_n of_o wicked_a instrument_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o in_o these_o latter_a we_o cast_v our_o eye_n too_o much_o upon_o the_o malice_n hatred_n and_o spite_n of_o the_o instrument_n and_o can_v therein_o behold_v the_o lord_n holy_a hand_n strike_v we_o with_o these_o rod_n but_o if_o we_o will_v consider_v that_o it_o be_v god_n that_o scourge_v we_o by_o they_o we_o shall_v then_o be_v ashamed_a of_o our_o folly_n in_o be_v angry_a at_o the_o rod_n without_o any_o regard_n of_o the_o smiter_n in_o snarl_v like_o dog_n at_o the_o stone_n never_o look_v at_o the_o fling_a yea_o we_o shall_v then_o frame_v ourselves_o to_o great_a patience_n put_v our_o mouth_n in_o the_o dust_n and_o give_v our_o cheek_n to_o he_o that_o smite_v we_o because_o it_o be_v the_o lord_n do_v more_o than_o he_o and_o though_o he_o be_v unjust_a unmerciful_a unfaithful_a and_o unkind_a yet_o god_n therein_o be_v most_o just_a merciful_a faithful_a and_o kind_a unto_o us._n 2._o it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n of_o singular_a comfort_n to_o the_o child_n use_v of_o god_n be_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o their_o cruel_a and_o crafty_a adversary_n because_o their_o adversary_n also_o be_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n as_o a_o rod_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o smiter_n and_o therefore_o as_o the_o rod_n of_o itself_o can_v do_v nothing_o any_o further_a than_o the_o force_n of_o the_o hand_n use_v it_o give_v strength_n unto_o it_o no_o more_o can_v they_o do_v any_o thing_n unto_o we_o as_o our_o saviour_n tell_v pilate_n further_a than_o it_o be_v give_v they_o from_o above_o joh._n 19_o a_o merciful_a father_n though_o he_o take_v a_o great_a swinge_v rod_n into_o his_o hand_n to_o correct_v his_o child_n yet_o he_o will_v not_o spend_v it_o whole_o upon_o his_o tender_a child_n back_n he_o will_v strike_v but_o soft_o and_o so_o will_v not_o do_v he_o all_o the_o hurt_n which_o he_o may_v use_v the_o rod_n to_o the_o uttermost_a when_o the_o poor_a child_n see_v such_o a_o terrible_a rod_n he_o may_v just_o be_v afraid_a know_v he_o not_o that_o his_o love_a father_n will_v so_o handle_v the_o rod_n that_o it_o shall_v do_v he_o no_o more_o harm_n than_o a_o small_a one_o will_v when_o god_n let_v we_o loose_v upon_o we_o bloody_a and_o boisterous_a tyrant_n who_o throat_n be_v a_o open_a sepulchre_n who_o foot_n be_v swift_a to_o shed_v blood_n and_o who_o mercy_n be_v cruel_a this_o might_n well_o dismay_v we_o know_v we_o not_o that_o god_n by_o his_o overruling_a hand_n do_v moderate_a and_o restrain_v they_o otherwise_o if_o as_o their_o power_n
