instance_n but_o in_o one_o of_o the_o branch_n viz._n in_o the_o branch_n of_o knowledge_n which_o be_v the_o very_a first_o introducer_n in_o the_o way_n of_o happiness_n he_o that_o have_v not_o a_o sound_a knowledge_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n at_o the_o least_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o covenant_n and_o that_o in_o some_o degree_n of_o profundity_n solid_a and_o substantial_a the_o mere_a ignorant_a man_n that_o know_v not_o these_o thing_n as_o hereby_o convince_v that_o he_o be_v out_o of_o the_o way_n to_o happiness_n and_o which_o be_v worse_o i_o be_o afraid_a even_o in_o these_o time_n of_o knowledge_n though_o it_o be_v a_o shame_n it_o shall_v be_v so_o and_o a_o grief_n to_o think_v on_o it_o that_o it_o be_v so_o i_o be_o afraid_a i_o say_v that_o there_o be_v many_o man_n not_o only_o of_o the_o poor_a sort_n of_o people_n that_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o their_o condition_n have_v no_o generous_a thought_n in_o themselves_o nor_o look_v after_o matter_n of_o knowledge_n who_o can_v so_o well_o appear_v in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n i_o mean_v come_v to_o church_n in_o that_o they_o have_v not_o time_n to_o spare_v to_o come_v nor_o understanding_n to_o reach_v what_o they_o hear_v when_o they_o come_v but_o beside_o these_o i_o be_o afraid_a even_o many_o man_n and_o woman_n in_o gaudy_a coat_n and_o gay_a clothes_n yea_o and_o i_o be_o afraid_a too_o many_o that_o be_v of_o good_a intellectual_n and_o understanding_n for_o other_o thing_n as_o for_o the_o world_n and_o their_o trade_n for_o plenty_n and_o honour_n and_o riches_n and_o as_o we_o use_v to_o say_v of_o a_o top_n the_o keen_a point_n of_o it_o be_v towards_o the_o earth_n but_o it_o be_v flat_a and_o dull_a enough_o towards_o heaven_n and_o heavenly_a thing_n i_o be_o afraid_a i_o say_v that_o they_o have_v not_o at_o least_o a_o sound_n and_o solid_a knowledge_n but_o content_v themselves_o either_o with_o none_o at_o all_o or_o at_o best_o very_o little_a though_o they_o know_v other_o thing_n yet_o they_o care_v not_o for_o religion_n or_o if_o they_o do_v they_o content_v themselves_o with_o a_o superficial_a swim_a knowledge_n or_o some_o general_a knowledge_n of_o god_n but_o certain_o belove_v know_v that_o they_o that_o have_v not_o knowledge_n and_o a_o competent_a degree_n of_o knowledge_n in_o some_o measure_n and_o degree_n of_o the_o main_a thing_n of_o religion_n these_o man_n must_v needs_o be_v clean_o out_o of_o the_o way_n to_o happiness_n that_o be_v a_o clear_a truth_n but_o i_o suppose_v many_o man_n will_v escape_v this_o conviction_n and_o when_o they_o come_v at_o this_o door_n they_o be_v it_o may_v be_v admit_v they_o pass_v now_o and_o it_o be_v true_a it_o may_v be_v they_o have_v knowledge_n in_o these_o time_n of_o knowledge_n yet_o know_v that_o many_o man_n that_o have_v it_o shall_v at_o last_o be_v keep_v out_o for_o suppose_v it_o come_v but_o to_o examine_v their_o affection_n how_o their_o heart_n do_v stand_v towards_o god_n especial_o in_o the_o degree_n of_o it_o where_o be_v the_o sovereignty_n of_o the_o affection_n of_o fear_n and_o love_n to_o love_n god_n and_o to_o fear_n god_n above_o all_o certain_a this_o be_v a_o clear_a case_n where_o this_o be_v want_v as_o in_o many_o it_o be_v i_o fear_v knowledge_n will_v not_o give_v entrance_n into_o heaven_n they_o will_v not_o be_v admit_v at_o this_o door_n so_o that_o it_o be_v a_o clear_a case_n they_o that_o do_v want_v holy_a affection_n and_o that_o in_o some_o degree_n and_o measure_n of_o sovereignty_n they_o that_o want_v these_o be_v clean_o out_o of_o the_o way_n to_o happiness_n though_o they_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o knowledge_n and_o last_o which_o be_v indeed_o the_o main_a trial_n be_v by_o the_o pulse_n the_o physician_n use_v to_o try_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o patient_n by_o feel_v the_o pulse_n and_o though_o there_o be_v one_o through_o the_o whole_a body_n yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o take_v the_o pulse_n at_o the_o hand_n so_o indeed_o the_o great_a trial_n the_o most_o visible_a trial_n be_v by_o our_o hand_n by_o our_o action_n and_o conversation_n they_o that_o walk_v not_o in_o a_o course_n of_o obedience_n unto_o god_n of_o sincere_a obedience_n universal_a obedience_n perpetual_a obedience_n obedience_n arise_v and_o flow_v from_o a_o high_a principle_n of_o love_n and_o affection_n towards_o god_n according_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o his_o word_n and_o aim_v at_o his_o glory_n they_o that_o do_v not_o this_o in_o some_o measure_n they_o be_v here_o convince_v that_o they_o be_v not_o in_o a_o way_n of_o happiness_n for_o the_o way_n of_o happiness_n be_v make_v up_o of_o these_o three_o knowledge_n affection_n and_o obedience_n as_o you_o have_v hear_v at_o large_a i_o will_v add_v no_o more_o of_o this_o use_n but_o come_v to_o the_o next_o and_o only_o in_o a_o word_n examination_n 3._o use_v examination_n this_o serve_v for_o a_o sad_a and_o serious_a examination_n by_o which_o we_o may_v try_v our_o own_o estate_n and_o condition_n whether_o we_o be_v yet_o in_o the_o way_n of_o happiness_n or_o no._n and_o i_o beseech_v you_o do_v not_o you_o deceive_v yourselves_o in_o a_o point_n of_o such_o consequence_n look_v you_o have_v a_o good_a card_n or_o compass_n to_o sail_v by_o against_o you_o come_v to_o the_o trial_n of_o the_o business_n as_o i_o have_v say_v sometime_o of_o scholar_n that_o make_v verse_n though_o they_o will_v not_o try_v have_v some_o apprehension_n of_o those_o thing_n in_o the_o tenor_n of_o they_o assent_n assent_n but_o in_o their_o connexion_n so_o that_o the_o heart_n may_v close_v with_o they_o in_o give_v full_a assent_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o they_o apprehend_v the_o reality_n of_o they_o to_o be_v such_o indeed_o as_o have_v a_o ground_n and_o subsistence_n for_o it_o be_v one_o thing_n to_o apprehend_v the_o promise_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o to_o know_v what_o the_o happiness_n be_v to_o be_v in_o conjunction_n with_o god_n to_o have_v a_o glorify_a body_n and_o a_o glorify_a soul_n far_o beyond_o that_o excellency_n that_o be_v here_o but_o it_o be_v a_o other_o thing_n to_o apprehend_v that_o these_o thing_n be_v real_o promise_v shall_v be_v real_o perform_v by_o god_n and_o so_o to_o set_v a_o man_n soul_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n by_o faith_n that_o these_o be_v not_o only_o mere_a word_n but_o such_o as_o indeed_o shall_v be_v exhibit_v to_o all_o god_n servant_n many_o apprehend_v these_o thing_n and_o understand_v what_o be_v mean_v by_o they_o but_o yet_o they_o have_v a_o root_n of_o atheism_n in_o their_o heart_n so_o that_o they_o think_v they_o be_v but_o devise_v thing_n to_o keep_v man_n in_o awe_n and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o reality_n in_o they_o to_o have_v no_o subsistence_n it_o be_v therefore_o a_o knowledge_n of_o apprehension_n join_v with_o a_o full_a assent_n of_o faith_n rest_v on_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o thing_n promise_v but_o in_o this_o place_n i_o shall_v use_v the_o word_n no_o further_o 3_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o main_a of_o all_o degree_n degree_n viz._n in_o regard_n of_o the_o degree_n or_o manner_n i_o desire_v every_o one_o to_o be_v industrious_a after_o knowledge_n divine_a knowledge_n especial_o and_o careful_a to_o join_v assent_n of_o faith_n to_o their_o knowledge_n to_o mix_v and_o temper_v they_o together_o and_o last_o to_o aim_v at_o a_o soundness_n of_o knowledge_n and_o a_o soundness_n of_o believe_v that_o they_o be_v solid_a and_o not_o superficial_a that_o they_o have_v not_o mere_o flashing_n or_o glimmering_n of_o light_n like_a lightning_n which_o do_v not_o guide_v a_o man_n in_o the_o way_n but_o rather_o lead_v a_o man_n out_o of_o the_o way_n many_o man_n may_v have_v a_o flash_n of_o knowledge_n and_o assent_n but_o this_o be_v not_o bottom_v nor_o ground_v it_o be_v not_o solid_a here_o you_o must_v remember_v these_o three_o thing_n wherein_o i_o shall_v comprehend_v all_o that_o i_o aim_v at_o in_o this_o substantial_a and_o solid_a knowledge_n which_o i_o exhort_v every_o one_o to_o endeavour_v after_o 1_o that_o it_o be_v so_o extensive_o 2_o that_o it_o be_v so_o intensive_o 3_o that_o it_o be_v proportionable_o 1_o to_o have_v it_o extensive_o substantial_a and_o solid_a not_o some_o catching_n and_o snatching_n at_o some_o thing_n in_o religion_n extensively_n extensively_n here_o to_o get_v a_o scrap_n and_o there_o to_o get_v a_o scrap_n and_o in_o the_o other_o place_n another_o scrap_n still_o scrape_v at_o a_o little_a like_o a_o garment_n make_v up_o of_o patch_n but_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o know_v the_o whole_a will_n of_o god_n and_o all_o thing_n necessary_a at_o least_o that_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n to_o be_v ignorant_a in_o none_o of_o they_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o near_a connexion_n and_o that_o necessary_a influence_n that_o they_o must_v have_v in_o the_o form_n and_o fashion_v of_o a_o right_n and_o faithful_a receive_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n which_o will_v not_o be_v without_o such_o a_o solid_a knowledge_n as_o be_v apprehensive_a of_o all_o that_o be_v necessary_a intensively_n intensively_n 2_o it_o must_v be_v intensive_o solid_a and_o substantial_a not_o only_o to_o know_v and_o give_v assent_n to_o all_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v necessary_a not_o mere_o catch_v at_o one_o act_n or_o some_o piece_n of_o it_o but_o to_o join_v to_o this_o a_o penetration_n of_o knowledge_n not_o only_o to_o have_v it_o swim_v in_o the_o brain_n but_o that_o it_o penetrate_v and_o sink_v into_o the_o understanding_n and_o make_v a_o deep_a impression_n there_o a_o man_n may_v have_v sometime_o a_o swim_a notion_n in_o the_o brain_n float_v aloft_o on_o the_o top_n which_o never_o penetrate_v nor_o enter_v in_o a_o man_n which_o i_o desire_v we_o will_v most_o aim_v at_o not_o to_o content_v ourselves_o with_o a_o mere_a swim_a notion_n to_o lick_v on_o the_o outside_n as_o it_o be_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o fable_n of_o the_o fox_n when_o the_o crane_n invite_v the_o fox_n to_o the_o feast_n he_o provide_v gruel_n for_o he_o in_o a_o narrow_a mouth_a vessel_n so_o that_o he_o himself_o can_v put_v in_o his_o long_a bill_n and_o suck_v it_o out_o but_o the_o fox_n can_v not_o put_v in_o his_o head_n but_o be_v fain_o to_o lick_v the_o outside_n etc._n etc._n i_o will_v not_o have_v man_n to_o content_v themselves_o with_o the_o outside_n to_o have_v a_o little_a superficial_a notion_n but_o the_o solidity_n of_o knowledge_n consist_v in_o this_o that_o a_o man_n have_v a_o real_a notion_n and_o apprehension_n which_o do_v enter_v into_o his_o mind_n and_o penetrate_v it_o thorough_o make_v a_o deep_a impression_n that_o it_o be_v receive_v there_o and_o such_o a_o impression_n as_o may_v put_v a_o tincture_n on_o the_o heart_n and_o affection_n too_o for_o indeed_o that_o be_v never_o a_o perfect_a dye_n of_o knowledge_n do_v not_o redound_v and_o overflow_v to_o the_o affection_n and_o draw_v they_o leave_v a_o tincture_n on_o they_o and_o therein_o indeed_o be_v the_o crisis_n of_o knowledge_n when_o it_o be_v save_v and_o solid_a namely_o then_o when_o it_o be_v penetrate_v when_o it_o so_o far_o fill_v the_o understanding_n and_o enter_v so_o deep_o into_o it_o that_o there_o be_v a_o resultance_n to_o overflow_v from_o it_o on_o the_o affection_n to_o inflame_v and_o draw_v they_o that_o will_v give_v the_o through_o die_v which_o be_v in_o grain_n which_o will_v never_o out_o but_o true_o save_v 3_o let_v every_o one_o endeavour_n after_o a_o proportioble_a knowledge_n proportionable_o proportionable_o proportionable_a to_o his_o part_n and_o mean_n proportionable_a to_o the_o place_n in_o which_o god_n have_v set_v he_o and_o proportionable_a to_o the_o opportunity_n that_o god_n have_v give_v he_o where_o god_n bestow_v much_o he_o require_v much_o a_o lesser_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n may_v be_v save_v where_o god_n afford_v a_o lesser_a measure_n of_o light_n in_o time_n of_o superstition_n and_o darkness_n without_o all_o doubt_n many_o do_v get_v to_o heaven_n with_o a_o very_a weak_a light_n yet_o it_o be_v such_o that_o make_v a_o impression_n on_o their_o heart_n but_o far_o short_a of_o that_o glitteringnesse_n of_o light_n that_o be_v in_o our_o time_n therefore_o we_o shall_v for_o this_o be_v one_o branch_n of_o the_o exhortation_n labour_v every_o one_o to_o make_v his_o knowledge_n go_v hand_n in_o hand_n in_o a_o equipage_n with_o the_o mean_n that_o he_o enjoy_v with_o the_o opportunity_n he_o have_v afford_v he_o by_o god_n and_o with_o the_o part_n he_o have_v to_o make_v he_o capable_a they_o that_o have_v more_o mean_n let_v not_o they_o content_v themselves_o to_o have_v so_o much_o as_o some_o have_v have_v that_o live_v in_o time_n of_o darkness_n they_o that_o have_v part_n and_o better_a understanding_n let_v they_o not_o content_v themselves_o to_o have_v so_o much_o as_o a_o poor_a ignoramus_fw-la have_v it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o they_o though_o the_o thing_n itself_o be_v sufficient_a to_o salvation_n and_o so_o be_v not_o necessary_a absolute_o yet_o god_n require_v more_o of_o they_o because_o he_o have_v give_v more_o to_o they_o god_n exact_v more_o at_o their_o hand_n because_o they_o have_v receive_v more_o at_o his_o hand_n god_n require_v that_o they_o shall_v keep_v proportion_n it_o how_o shall_v we_o attain_v to_o it_o 2_o this_o be_v premise_v now_o let_v i_o add_v concern_v the_o other_o thing_n viz._n how_o shall_v we_o attain_v to_o this_o knowledge_n suppose_v we_o be_v willing_a and_o desirous_a of_o it_o as_o nothing_o indeed_o be_v more_o desirable_a than_o knowledge_n to_o be_v a_o know_a creature_n a_o rational_a creature_n a_o understand_a creature_n it_o be_v pabulum_fw-la anima_fw-la the_o food_n of_o the_o soul_n a_o soul_n that_o be_v a_o reasonable_a soul_n be_v as_o much_o nourish_v and_o refresh_v with_o reasonable_a thing_n with_o knowledge_n and_o other_o intellectual_n as_o the_o body_n that_o be_v a_o body_n be_v nourish_v with_o corporeal_a sustenance_n but_o suppose_v now_o we_o desire_v this_o how_o shall_v we_o attain_v it_o this_o be_v a_o large_a compass_n to_o go_v through_o the_o full_a of_o it_o i_o shall_v therefore_o point_v out_o brief_o
with_o they_o make_v no_o use_n of_o they_o for_o that_o purpose_n we_o may_v soon_o loose_v all_o the_o benefit_n of_o those_o mean_n we_o have_v it_o be_v admirable_a to_o think_v how_o under_o the_o drop_n of_o the_o pipe_n a_o man_n shall_v be_v dry_a how_o that_o under_o the_o continual_a mean_n of_o grace_n a_o man_n may_v continue_v in_o deep_a ignorance_n it_o be_v admirable_a i_o say_v to_o think_v that_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o but_o yet_o if_o a_o man_n do_v not_o allow_v time_n nor_o employ_v his_o part_n nor_o make_v use_n of_o the_o mean_v both_o public_a and_o private_a that_o god_n have_v bestow_v on_o we_o it_o will_v be_v so_o i_o say_v if_o a_o man_n make_v no_o use_n of_o these_o mean_n that_o he_o have_v public_o which_o be_v now_o so_o rich_a and_o so_o plentiful_a that_o mannah_n fall_v daily_o about_o our_o tent_n as_o it_o be_v that_o if_o a_o man_n will_v but_o vouchsafe_v to_o step_v out_o of_o his_o door_n and_o carry_v his_o omer_n in_o his_o hand_n public_a public_a he_o may_v fill_v it_o every_o day_n but_o if_o man_n will_v not_o vouchsafe_v the_o gather_n of_o it_o never_o attend_v on_o the_o post_n of_o the_o door_n of_o wisdom_n never_o make_v use_v of_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n that_o god_n offer_v but_o will_v be_v as_o childish_a and_o as_o foolish_a as_o those_o that_o go_v to_o the_o market_n they_o go_v there_o for_o some_o business_n but_o when_o they_o come_v there_o like_o fool_n they_o go_v see_v this_o gay_a thing_n and_o the_o other_o gaudy_a thing_n and_o so_o forget_v utter_o their_o errand_n and_o go_v home_o again_o without_o it_o if_o man_n and_o woman_n i_o say_v will_v do_v so_o as_o i_o fear_v too_o many_o do_v come_v to_o god_n house_n to_o see_v and_o to_o be_v see_v to_o see_v this_o gew-gaw_n and_o the_o other_o gay_a thing_n this_o woman_n dress_n and_o the_o other_o woman_n fashion_n to_o prattle_v with_o this_o party_n and_o gape_v and_o look_v on_o the_o other_o and_o so_o let_v all_o fall_v beside_o they_o without_o mind_v what_o they_o hear_v either_o to_o know_v or_o remember_v it_o they_o may_v have_v excellent_a mean_n but_o yet_o they_o will_v never_o make_v any_o advantage_n of_o they_o a_o man_n therefore_o that_o will_v thrive_v and_o increase_v in_o knowledge_n must_v make_v precious_a account_n and_o use_v of_o the_o mean_n he_o must_v resolve_v thus_o much_o at_o least_o to_o lay_v up_o some_o thing_n out_o of_o every_o opportunity_n that_o he_o have_v to_o keep_v a_o stock_n of_o knowledge_n and_o add_v little_a to_o little_a he_o must_v labour_v to_o learn_v something_o this_o day_n and_o something_o the_o next_o day_n and_o so_o to_o treasure_n up_o something_o out_o of_o all_o opportunity_n at_o least_o and_o not_o only_o this_o for_o the_o public_a private_a private_a but_o a_o man_n must_v labour_v to_o do_v something_o in_o private_a he_o must_v be_v content_a likewise_o to_o use_v some_o diligence_n in_o private_a i_o do_v not_o speak_v now_o of_o a_o scholastical_a much_o less_o of_o a_o monastical_a sequester_v of_o a_o man_n self_n leave_v all_o other_o employment_n and_o so_o make_v the_o plough_n stand_v still_o in_o all_o other_o trade_n to_o drive_v on_o this_o i_o know_v there_o be_v a_o difference_n of_o person_n and_o employment_n and_o condition_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o in_o the_o commonwealth_n and_o there_o be_v a_o use_n and_o we_o have_v need_n of_o all_o these_o but_o yet_o there_o be_v one_o general_a trade_n that_o every_o one_o shall_v drive_v viz._n the_o trade_n for_o heaven_n and_o so_o for_o matter_n of_o divine_a knowledge_n to_o get_v skill_n and_o to_o furnish_v himself_o with_o it_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n i_o say_v that_o general_o belong_v to_o all_o be_v they_o of_o what_o trade_n or_o profession_n they_o will_v they_o must_v if_o ever_o they_o will_v look_v to_o come_v to_o happiness_n if_o they_o be_v of_o god_n and_o will_v enjoy_v god_n and_o be_v indeed_o christian_n they_o must_v look_v after_o these_o thing_n that_o tend_v and_o conduce_v this_o way_n that_o be_v a_o general_a thing_n that_o belong_v to_o all_o and_o therefore_o i_o conceive_v this_o be_v one_o of_o the_o main_a impediment_n why_o man_n who_o live_v under_o the_o mean_v both_o public_a and_o private_a and_o yet_o alas_o die_v of_o poor_a estate_n and_o leave_v but_o little_a that_o appear_v of_o any_o stock_n or_o advantage_n that_o they_o have_v make_v under_o these_o mean_n of_o knowledge_n i_o say_v one_o of_o the_o main_a reason_n be_v not_o only_o because_o they_o do_v neglect_v to_o attend_v the_o public_a or_o if_o they_o attend_v it_o it_o be_v for_o some_o other_o end_n and_o purpose_n not_o with_o a_o mind_n to_o grow_v and_o increase_v in_o the_o knowledge_n and_o grace_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n to_o increase_v and_o add_v to_o their_o stock_n of_o knowledge_n but_o as_o the_o say_n be_v in_o parabola_fw-la ovis_fw-la capras_fw-la quarunt_fw-la i._n e._n come_v for_o some_o other_o end_n but_o it_o be_v not_o only_o the_o neglect_n of_o the_o public_a i_o say_v for_o suppose_v a_o man_n do_v attend_v on_o it_o and_o bend_v his_o ear_n to_o go_v along_o diligent_o to_o hear_v and_o understand_v the_o thing_n that_o a_o man_n hear_v and_o so_o to_o advantage_v himself_o in_o knowledge_n labour_v also_o to_o revit_z and_o fasten_v in_o his_o memory_n those_o thing_n he_o hear_v and_o understand_v that_o they_o slip_v not_o out_o lock_v up_o all_o those_o door_n that_o may_v let_v it_o out_o as_o his_o eye_n from_o gaze_v up_o and_o down_o and_o his_o ear_n from_o listen_v to_o other_o matter_n and_o so_o stop_v as_o it_o be_v all_o the_o chink_n that_o his_o memory_n may_v hold_v and_o keep_v it_o fast_o yet_o i_o say_v for_o all_o this_o i_o will_v have_v you_o mark_v it_o if_o man_n will_v do_v nothing_o at_o all_o in_o private_a be_v go_v out_o of_o the_o house_n of_o god_n in_o public_a never_o meditate_v on_o that_o which_o he_o have_v hear_v never_o chew_v the_o cud_n as_o it_o be_v never_o roll_v that_o sweet_a bit_n he_o have_v in_o his_o mouth_n never_o chafe_v it_o by_o private_a meditation_n so_o as_o to_o make_v a_o full_a impression_n on_o his_o understanding_n and_o so_o more_o strong_o lock_v it_o up_o in_o his_o memory_n if_o a_o man_n i_o say_v will_v take_v
