suitable_a to_o such_o a_o ordinance_n as_o this_o be_v and_o that_o be_v the_o three_o thing_n require_v in_o sanctify_v of_o god_n name_n in_o this_o ordinance_n the_o purge_v out_o of_o sin_n and_o rise_v of_o the_o heart_n against_o it_o 4._o the_o four_o thing_n that_o be_v to_o be_v do_v for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_v here_o it_o be_v the_o hunger_a and_o thirst_v of_o the_o soul_n after_o jesus_n christ_n whosoever_o come_v hither_o he_o come_v to_o a_o feast_n and_o the_o lord_n exspect_v that_o all_o his_o guest_n shall_v come_v with_o stomach_n unto_o his_o feast_n come_v christ_n that_o i_o may_v have_v my_o soul_n further_o unite_v to_o the_o lord_n christ_n and_o so_o have_v further_a influence_n of_o christ_n to_o my_o soul_n i_o come_v with_o thirst_n after_o the_o lord_n christ_n know_v my_o infinite_a need_n of_o he_o and_o the_o infinite_a excellency_n that_o there_o be_v in_o jesus_n christ_n my_o soul_n do_v famish_v and_o perish_v for_o ever_o without_o christ_n but_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o christ_n there_o be_v a_o fullness_n for_o the_o satisfy_n of_o my_o soul_n that_o i_o have_v have_v of_o christ_n sometime_o in_o the_o word_n and_o sometime_o in_o prayer_n that_o have_v be_v sweet_a unto_o i_o but_o i_o expect_v a_o further_a communion_n with_o christ_n here_o for_o this_o be_v the_o grand_a ordinance_n for_o communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n indeed_o the_o word_n in_o this_o respect_n it_o be_v beyond_o this_o ordinance_n that_o be_v it_o be_v not_o only_o for_o the_o increase_n of_o grace_n but_o for_o the_o beget_n this_o be_v only_o for_o the_o increase_n of_o grace_n and_o not_o appoint_v for_o the_o beget_n now_o in_o that_o respect_n the_o word_n be_v above_o the_o sacrament_n but_o now_o this_o sacrament_n be_v a_o more_o full_a ordinance_n for_o communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n this_o be_v the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o of_o his_o blood_n and_o therefore_o there_o ought_v to_o be_v hunger_a and_o thirst_a desire_n of_o the_o soul_n after_o jesus_n christ_n therefore_o you_o must_v take_v heed_n you_o do_v not_o come_v with_o your_o stomach_n want_n at_o all_o of_o christ_n only_o they_o come_v and_o take_v a_o little_a piece_n of_o bread_n and_o a_o draught_n of_o wine_n but_o for_o any_o strong_a pause_v desire_n to_o meet_v with_o jesus_n christ_n there_o in_o the_o ordinance_n to_o come_v so_o as_o they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o live_v without_o christ_n even_o as_o a_o man_n that_o be_v a_o hunger_v can_v live_v without_o his_o meat_n and_o drink_n and_o so_o for_o the_o soul_n to_o have_v such_o a_o disposition_n after_o christ_n this_o be_v a_o rare_a thing_n but_o know_v that_o god_n name_n be_v not_o sanctify_v unless_o thou_o do_v come_v in_o such_o a_o way_n unto_o his_o holy_a sacrament_n that_o be_v the_o four_o thing_n hungry_a and_o thirsty_a desire_n after_o christ_n from_o a_o deep_a sense_n of_o the_o need_n of_o he_o and_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o excellency_n in_o he_o 5._o in_o the_o five_o place_n there_o must_v be_v a_o exercise_n of_o faith_n for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n not_o able_a to_o discern_v the_o body_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o by_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n if_o thou_o come_v only_o with_o bodily_a eye_n to_o look_v upon_o what_o be_v here_o thou_o see_v nothing_o but_o a_o little_a bread_n and_o wine_n but_o now_o where_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n be_v there_o be_v a_o real_a appearance_n of_o jesus_n christ_n to_o the_o soul_n as_o if_o christ_n be_v bodily_a present_n and_o we_o need_v not_o have_v the_o bread_n trune_v in_o to_o his_o body_n for_o faith_n can_v see_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n through_o the_o bread_n and_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n gush_v in_o the_o wine_n and_o it_o be_v a_o mighty_a thing_n to_o have_v christ_n and_o such_o spiritual_a thing_n make_v real_a and_o not_o to_o be_v a_o fancy_n if_o one_o look_v upon_o the_o fire_n that_o be_v paint_v one_o can_v heat_v one_o self_n in_o cold_a wether_n with_o that_o but_o fire_n that_o be_v real_o burn_v upon_o the_o hearth_n so_o those_o that_o come_v to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o not_o come_v with_o faith_n that_o have_v only_o the_o eye_n of_o their_o body_n they_o only_o see_v as_o it_o be_v a_o paint_a christ_n they_o do_v not_o see_v christ_n real_o his_o body_n and_o blood_n and_o those_o great_a mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v not_o present_v as_o real_a thing_n to_o their_o soul_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o they_o go_v away_o and_o get_v nothing_o but_o now_o when_o the_o soul_n come_v with_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n the_o soul_n see_v the_o
in_o their_o child_n it_o be_v one_o of_o the_o forest_n affliction_n that_o almost_o ever_o any_o saint_n of_o god_n meet_v withal_o in_o his_o child_n this_o affliction_n of_o aaron_n at_o this_o time_n that_o two_o of_o his_o son_n and_o as_o i_o tell_v you_o the_o last_o day_n renown_a man_n in_o israel_n new_o consecrate_v to_o the_o office_n of_o priesthood_n that_o the_o very_o first_o day_n they_o come_v to_o offer_v in_o their_o office_n they_o be_v strike_v before_o all_o the_o people_n with_o fire_n from_o heaven_n and_o be_v consume_v oh_o what_o a_o sad_a affliction_n be_v there_o be_v any_o miscarriage_n of_o they_o you_o think_v it_o be_v a_o heavy_a hand_n of_o god_n but_o especial_o if_o god_n take_v away_o your_o child_n by_o death_n than_o you_o mourn_v and_o will_v not_o be_v comfort_v yea_o but_o though_o god_n have_v take_v away_o your_o child_n by_o death_n yea_o perhaps_o it_o may_v be_v by_o a_o violent_a death_n as_o be_v drown_v etc._n etc._n yet_o they_o have_v not_o be_v strike_v with_o fire_n from_o heaven_n by_o god_n and_o they_o have_v not_o be_v of_o such_o public_a use_n these_o here_o be_v renown_a man_n and_o take_v away_o in_o their_o very_a sin_n too_o your_o child_n which_o have_v go_v upon_o their_o lawful_a employment_n and_o god_n have_v take_v away_o their_o life_n there_o be_v no_o such_o cause_n of_o murmur_v here_o but_o when_o god_n take_v away_o child_n in_o their_o sin_n and_o in_o such_o a_o way_n as_o by_o fire_n from_o heaven_n thus_o god_n take_v away_o aaron_n child_n and_o he_o be_v as_o dear_a to_o god_n the_o affirmative_a in_o express_a word_n yet_o if_o we_o may_v have_v it_o by_o consequence_n it_o be_v a_o affirmative_a as_o well_o as_o the_o negative_a when_o we_o have_v it_o by_o consequence_n but_o now_o the_o note_n of_o observation_n be_v that_o the_o near_a any_o come_v to_o god_n if_o they_o sin_n against_o he_o they_o must_v not_o expect_v to_o be_v spare_v do_v not_o think_v that_o god_n will_v spare_v you_o the_o more_o because_o you_o be_v professor_n of_o religion_n or_o because_o you_o do_v often_o worship_v he_o i_o suppose_v you_o that_o be_v acquaint_v with_o scripture_n scorner_n and_o opposer_n of_o religion_n remember_v what_o be_v say_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n against_o such_o and_o so_o learn_v to_o sanctify_v god_n name_n we_o may_v have_v mention_v some_o particular_a threat_n of_o god_n against_o particular_a sinner_n for_o the_o help_a of_o you_o that_o when_o you_o see_v exemplary_a judgement_n to_o have_v recourse_n to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o we_o let_v that_o pass_v a_o further_a note_n from_o this_o story_n be_v this_o that_o the_o great_a honour_n that_o god_n intend_v to_o his_o name_n it_o be_v the_o make_n of_o his_o name_n give_v it_o once_o he_o give_v it_o to_o they_o all_o and_o say_v drink_v you_o all_o of_o this_o so_o it_o be_v do_v quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v be_v it_o not_o better_a for_o to_o be_v give_v into_o every_o one_o hand_n answ_n no_o because_o that_o the_o give_v of_o it_o once_o for_o all_o do_v signify_v more_o full_o the_o fellowship_n and_o communion_n that_o they_o have_v together_o as_o at_o a_o table_n it_o be_v a_o strange_a thing_n that_o every_o bit_n of_o meat_n must_v be_v give_v to_o every_o one_o particular_o no_o but_o the_o dish_n must_v be_v set_v before_o they_o and_o they_o must_v take_v it_o themselves_o indeed_o if_o they_o be_v child_n you_o cut_v every_o piece_n of_o meat_n and_o give_v it_o into_o their_o hand_n or_o mouth_n but_o that_o be_v suitable_a to_o a_o fellowship_n at_o table_n and_o communion_n to_o have_v the_o meat_n set_v before_o they_o be_v blessed_v and_o then_o for_o all_o to_o partake_v of_o it_o and_o beside_o this_o giving_z it_o into_o every_o one_o hand_n certain_o it_o come_v to_o we_o from_o a_o popish_a and_o superstitous_a conceit_n of_o the_o papist_n for_o the_o papist_n will_v give_v it_o into_o their_o mouth_n because_o the_o people_n must_v not_o defile_v it_o with_o their_o hand_n and_o it_o be_v to_o bring_v more_o reverence_n to_o the_o sacrament_n now_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o danger_n for_o to_o bring_v in_o man_n device_n for_o to_o cause_v more_o reverence_n we_o be_v to_o look_v to_o the_o ordinance_n of_o christ_n he_o give_v it_o once_o and_o say_v drink_v you_o all_o of_o it_o in_o general_a to_o they_o all_o and_o so_o the_o minister_n shall_v do_v and_o beside_o there_o be_v this_o in_o it_o more_o and_o one_o will_v wonder_v that_o minister_n shall_v give_v it_o in_o particular_a and_o not_o in_o general_a to_o the_o church_n for_o by_o this_o mean_n minister_n may_v abundant_o ease_v themselves_o of_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o charge_n and_o guilt_n for_o upon_o this_o ground_n it_o will_v appear_v that_o a_o minister_n though_o as_o a_o eminent_a officer_n he_o be_v to_o look_v to_o his_o
keep_v covenant_n on_o his_o part_n but_o it_o may_v be_v we_o shall_v not_o keep_v covenant_n on_o we_o and_o so_o we_o may_v fail_v at_o last_o but_o now_o when_o thou_o look_v upon_o all_o the_o good_a thing_n in_o the_o gospel_n dispense_v in_o the_o way_n of_o a_o testament_n that_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n the_o legacy_n that_o god_n do_v bequeath_v to_o his_o servant_n this_o be_v a_o mighty_a comfort_n to_o the_o foul_a that_o all_o the_o precious_a thing_n of_o the_o gospel_n come_v to_o i_o in_o the_o way_n of_o a_o testament_n and_o that_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o new_a substance_n but_o administer_v in_o a_o dark_a way_n and_o many_o difference_n there_o be_v but_o now_o when_o we_o hear_v of_o the_o new_a testament_n there_o be_v present_v unto_o we_o all_o the_o riches_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o way_n of_o a_o legacy_n and_o in_o the_o administration_n of_o it_o with_o cleverness_n and_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n the_o terror_n and_o harshness_n of_o the_o old_a administration_n be_v take_v away_o now_o these_o be_v the_o meditation_n by_o which_o we_o shall_v labour_v to_o sanctify_v our_o heart_n when_o we_o be_v receive_v of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o in_o the_o work_n of_o these_o meditation_n upon_o our_o heart_n we_o shall_v come_v to_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n when_o we_o be_v draw_v nigh_o to_o he_o in_o that_o holy_a ordinance_n of_o he_o thus_o for_o meditation_n the_o next_o thing_n when_o we_o be_v there_o must_v be_v a_o actuate_a of_o these_o holy_a disposition_n that_o before_o we_o speak_v of_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o a_o christian_n to_o bring_v grace_n to_o the_o sacrament_n but_o there_o must_v be_v a_o stir_v of_o that_o grace_n at_o that_o time_n or_o otherwise_o the_o name_n of_o god_n be_v not_o sanctify_v in_o receive_v of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o above_o all_o grace_n the_o actuate_a of_o the_o grace_n of_o faith_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o that_o thou_o be_v a_o believer_n but_o thy_o faith_n must_v act_v at_o that_o very_a instant_n as_o thus_o first_o when_o thou_o hear_v the_o minister_n in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n say_v thus_o this_o be_v the_o body_n of_o jesus_n christ_n which_o be_v give_v for_o you_o take_v eat_z thou_o shall_v have_v thy_o faith_n so_o act_v upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o give_v at_o that_o instant_n when_o thou_o take_v the_o bread_n and_o put_v it_o into_o thy_o mouth_n to_o eat_v thou_o shall_v stir_v up_o the_o act_n of_o faith_n afresh_o lay_v more_o hold_n upon_o jesus_n christ_n look_v as_o once_o thou_o do_v in_o thy_o first_o conversion_n when_o christ_n be_v present_v to_o thou_o in_o the_o word_n or_o in_o any_o other_o way_n there_o be_v a_o act_n of_o faith_n draw_v forth_o whereby_o thy_o soul_n do_v cast_v itself_o and_o roll_n itself_o upon_o jesus_n christ_n so_o shall_v thou_o renew_v it_o renew_v the_o same_o work_n of_o faith_n that_o thou_o do_v find_v in_o the_o very_a first_o conversion_n and_o thereby_o thou_o shall_v come_v to_o have_v renew_v comfort_n in_o the_o renew_n of_o that_o act_n i_o may_v name_v thou_o other_o grace_n and_o disposition_n how_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o stir_v and_o a_o act_n of_o they_o only_o remember_v i_o leave_v all_o this_o point_n with_o this_o note_n that_o grace_n be_v not_o enough_o for_o partake_v the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n except_o there_o be_v a_o act_n and_o a_o stir_v up_o of_o that_o grace_n many_o christian_n be_v careful_a to_o prepare_v and_o examine_v before_o whether_o they_o have_v grace_n or_o no_o but_o at_o that_o time_n when_o they_o come_v to_o receive_v than_o there_o be_v not_o a_o lively_a work_n and_o stir_v of_o that_o grace_n and_o so_o they_o come_v to_o lose_v the_o comfort_n and_o benefit_n of_o that_o ordinance_n thus_o much_o shall_v suffice_v for_o this_o point_n of_o sanctify_a god_n name_v in_o receive_v the_o holy_a communion_n i_o shall_v now_o come_v to_o the_o last_o point_n which_o be_v the_o sanctify_a the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o prayer_n sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o prayer_n now_o this_o argument_n may_v take_v we_o up_o many_o sermon_n but_o upon_o occasion_n of_o the_o day_n of_o prayer_n and_o hmiliation_n i_o have_v preach_v divers_a sermon_n about_o the_o point_n of_o prayer_n therefore_o i_o shall_v be_v brief_a and_o only_o now_o reckon_v up_o together_o and_o set_v before_o your_o view_n the_o several_a thing_n that_o be_v to_o be_v do_v for_o the_o sanctify_a of_o the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o prayer_n first_o for_o prayer_n in_o that_o we_o draw_v nigh_o to_o god_n and_o it_o be_v a_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n that_o i_o suppose_v all_o of_o you_o can_v but_o in_o prayer_n wherein_o the_o creature_n tender_v up_o his_o homage_n to_o god_n and_o manifest_v his_o profession_n of_o his_o dependence_n upon_o god_n for_o all_o good_a that_o he_o have_v and_o
