hanging of the door to the tabernacle 6 And thou shalt set the altar of the burnt-offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation 7 And thou shalt set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar and shalt put water therein 8 And thou shalt set up the court round about and hang up the hanging at the court-gate 9 And thou shalt take the anointing oyl and anoint the tabernacle and all that is therein and shalt hallow it and all the vessels thereof and it shall be holy 10 And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt-offering and all his vessels and sanctifie the altar and it shall be an altar †Heb. holiness of holinesses most holy 11 And thou shalt anoint the laver and his foot and sanctifie it 12 And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and wash them with water 13 And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments and anoint him sanctifie him that he may minister unto me in the priests office 14 And thou shalt bring his sons and clothe them with coats 15 And thou shalt anoint them as thou didst anoint their father that they may minister unto me in the priests office for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting priest-hood throughout their generations 16 Thus did Moses according to all that the LORD commanded him so did he 17 ¶ And it came to pass in the first moneth in the second year on the first day of the moneth that the * Num. 7. â—â— tabernacle was reared up 18 And Moses reared up the tabernacle and fastned his sockets and set up the boards thereof and put in the bars thereof and reared up his pillars 19 And he spread abroad the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent above upon it as the LORD commanded Moses 20 ¶ And he took and put the testimony into the ark and set the staves on the ark and put the mercy-seat above upon the ark 21 And he brought the ark into the tabernacle and * Ch. 35. â—â— set up the vail of the covering and covered the ark of the testimony as the LORD commanded Moses 22 ¶ And he put the table in the tent of the congregation upon the side of the tabernacle north-ward without the vail 23 And he set the bread in order upon it before the LORD as the LORD had commanded Moses 24 ¶ And he put the candlestick in the tent of the congregation over against the table on the side of the tabernacle south-ward 25 And he lighted the lamps before the LORD as the LORD commanded Moses 26 ¶ And he put the golden altar in the tent of the congregation before the vail 27 And he burnt sweet incense thereon as the LORD commanded Moses 28 ¶ And he set up the hanging at the door of the tabernacle 29 And he put the altar of burnt-offering by the door of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation and offered upon it the burnt-offering and the meat-offering as the * Ch. 30. â—â— LORD commanded Moses 30 ¶ And he set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar and put water there to wash withal 31 And Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet thereat 32 When they went into the tent of the congregation when they came near unto the altar they washed as the LORD commanded Moses 33 And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar and set up the hanging of the court-gate so Moses finished the work 34 ¶ * Numb 9.15 1 King 8.10 Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle 35 And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation because the cloud abode thereon and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle 36 And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle the children of Israel †Heb. journeyed went onward in all their journeys 37 But if the cloud were not taken up then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up 38 For the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by day and fire was on it by night in the sight of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys The third book of Moses called LEVITICUS CHAP. I. 1 The burnt-offerings 3 of the herd 10 of the fâ—ocks 14 of the fowls ANd the LORD called unto Moses and spake unto him out of the tabernacle of the congregation saying 2 Speak unto the children of Israel and say unto them If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD ye shall bring your offering of the cattel even of the herd and of the flock 3 If his offering be a brunt-sacrifice of the herd let him offer a male without blemish he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD 4 * Eâ—od 19.10 And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt-offering and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him 5 And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD and the priests Aarons sons shall bring the bloâ—d and sprinkle the bloud round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 6 And he shall flay the burnt-offering and cut it into his pieces 7 And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire upon the altar and lay the wood in order upon the fire 8 And the priests Aarons sons shall lay the parts the head the fat in order upon the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar 9 But his inwards and his legs shall he wash in water and the priest shall burn all on the altar to be a burnt-sacrifice an offering made by fire of a sweet favour unto the LORD 10 ¶ And if his offering be of the flocks namely of the sheep or of the goats for a burnt-sacrifice he shall bring it a male without blemish 11 And he shall kill it on the side of the altar north-ward before the LORD and the priests Aarons sons shall sprinkle his bloud round â—â—out upon the altar 12 And he shall cut it into his pieces with his head and his fat and the priest shall lay them in order on the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar 13 But he shall wash the inwards and the legs with water and the priests shall bring it all and burn it upon the altar it is a burnt-sacrifice an offering made by fire of a sweet savour unto the LORD 14 ¶ And if the burnt-sacrifice for his offering to the LORD be of fowls then he shall bring his offering of turtle-doves or of young pigeons 15 And the priest shall bring it unto the altar and ‖ Or pinch of the

sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation 16 ¶ And to the office of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest pertaineth the oyl for the light and the * Exod. 3â— 34 sweet incense and the daily meat-offering and the * Exod. 30.23 anointing oyl and the oversight of all the tabernacle and of all that therein is in the sanctuary and in the vessels thereof 17 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 18 Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites 19 But thus do unto them that they may live and not die when they approach unto the most holy things Aaron and his sons shall go in and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden 20 But they shall not go in to see when the holy things are covered lest they die 21 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 22 Take also the sum of the sons of Gershon throughout the houses of their fathers by their families 23 From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them all that enter in †Heb. to war the warfare to perform the service to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation 24 This is the service of the families of the Gershonites to serve and for ‖ Or carriage burdens 25 And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle and the tabernacle of the congregation his covering and the covering of the badgers skins that is above upon it and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 26 And the hangings of the court and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about and their cords and all the instruments of their service and all that is made for them so shall they serve 27 At the †Heb. mouth appointment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites in all their burdens and in all their service and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burdens 28 This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest 29 ¶ As for the sons of Merari thou shalt number them after their families by the house families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty 37 These were they that were numbred of the families of the Kohathites all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation which Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses 38 And those that were numbred of the sons of Gershon throughout their families and by the house of their fathers 39 From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old every one that entreth in to the service for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation 40 Even those that were numbred of them throughout their families by the houses of their fathers were two thousand and fix hundred and thirty 41 These are they that were numbred of the families of the sons of Gershon of all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation whom Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD 42 ¶ And those that were numbred of the families of the sons of Merari throughout their families by the house of their fathers 43 From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old every one that entreth in to the service for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation 44 Even those that were numbred of them after their families were three thousand and two hundred 45 These be those that were numbred of the families of the sons of Merari whom Moses and Aaron numbred according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses 46 All those that were numbred of the Levites whom Moses and Aaron and the chief of Israel numbred after their families and after the house of their fathers 47 From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old every one that came to do the service of the ministery and the service of the burden in the tabernacle of the congregation 48 Even those that were numbred of them were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore 49 According to the commandment of the LORD they were numbred by the hand of Moses every one according to his service and according to his burden thus were they numbred of him as the LORD

VII 1 Ezra goeth up to Jerusalem 11 The gracious commission of Artaxerxes to Ezra 27 Ezra blesseth God for his savour NOw after these things in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia Ezra the son of Seraiah the son of Azariah the son of Hilkiah 2 The son of Shallum the son of Zadok the son of Ahitub 3 The son of Amariah the son of Azariah the son of Meraioth 4 The son of Zerahiah the son of Uzzi the son of Bukki 5 The son of Abishua the son of Phinehas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the chief priest 6 This Ezra went up from Babylon and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses which the LORD God of Israel had given and the king granted him all his request according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him 7 And there went up some of the children of Israel and of the priests and the Levites and the singers and the porters and the Nethinims unto Jerusalem in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king 8 And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth moneth which was in the seventh year of the king 9 For upon the first day of the first moneth †Heb. was the foundation of the going up began he to go up from Babylon and on the first day of the fifth moneth came he to Jerusalem according to the good hand of his God upon him 10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD and to do it and to teach in Israel statutes and judgements 11 ¶ Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest the scribe even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD and of his statutes to Israel 12 Artaxerxes king of kings ‖ Or To Ezra the priest a perfect scribe of the law of the God of heaven peace c. Unto Ezra the priest a scribe of the law of the God of heaven perfect peace and at such a time 13 I make a decree that all they of the people of Israel and of his priests and Levites in my realm which are minded of their own

XXV 1 The sons of Abraham by Keturah 5 The division of his goods 7 His age and death 9 His burial 12 The generations of Ishmael 17 His age and death 21 Isaac prayeth for Rebekah being barren 22 The children strive in her womb 24 The birth of Esau and Jacob. 27 Their difference 29 Esau selleth his birth-right THen again Abraham took a wife and her name was Keturah 2 And she bare him Zimran and Jokshan and Medan and Midian and Ishbak and Shuah 3 And * 1 Chroâ— 1.32 Jokshan begat Sheba and Dedan And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim 4 And the sons of Midian Ephah and Epher and Hanoch and Abidah and Eldaah All these were the children of Keturah 5 ¶ And Abraham gave all that he had unto Isaac 6 But unto the sons of the concubines which Abraham had Abraham gave gifts and sent them away from Isaac his son while he yet lived east-ward unto the east-countrey 7 And these are the days of the years of Abrahams life which he lived an hundred threescore and fifteen years 8 Then Abraham gave up the ghost and died in a good old age an old man and full of â—ears and was gathered to his people 9 And his sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah in the field or Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite which is before Mamre 10 * Chap. 23.16 The field which Abraham purchased of the sons of Heth there was Abraham buried and Sarah his wife 11 ¶ And it came to pass after the death of Abraham that God blessed his son Isaac and Isaac dwelt by the * Chap. 1â— 14 and 24 62. well Lahai-roi 12 ¶ Now these are the generations of Ishmael Abrahams son whom Hagar the Egyptian Sarahs handmaid bare unto Abraham 13 And * 1 Chron. 1.29 these are the names of the sons of Ishmael by their names according to their generations The first-born of Ishmael Nebajoth and Kedar and Adbeel and Mibsam 14 And Mishma and Dumah and Massa 15 Hadar and Tema Jetur Naphish and Kedemah 16 These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names by their towns and by their castles twelve princes according to their nations 17 And these are the years of the life of Ishmael an hundred and thirty and seven years and he gave up the ghost and died and was gathered unto his people 18 And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur that is before Egypt as thou goest towards Assyria and he †Heb. fâ—ll died in the presence of all his brethren 19 ¶ And these are the generations of Isaac Abrahams son Abraham begat Isaac 20 And Isaac was fourty years old when he took Rebekah to wife the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan-aram the sister to Laban the Syrian 21 And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife because she was barren the LORD was intreated of him and Rebekah his wife conceived 22 And the children struggled together within her and she said If it be so why am I thus and she went to enquire of the LORD 23 And the LORD said unto her Two nations are in thy womb and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels and the one people shall be stronger then the other people and * Rom. 9. â—2 the elder shall serve the younger 24 ¶ And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled behold there were twins in her womb 25 And the first came out red all over like an hairy garment and they called his name Esau 26 And after that came his brother out and * Hos 12.3 his hand took hold on Esau's heel and his name was called Jacob and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them 27 And the boys grew and Esau was a cunning hunter a man of the field and Jacob was a plain man dwelling in tents 28 And Isaac loved Esau because †Heb. venison was in his mouth he did eat of his venison but Rebekah loved Jacob. 29 ¶ And Jacob sod pottage and Esau came from the field and he was faint 30 And Esau said to Jacob Feed me I pray thee †Heb. with that red with that red pottage with that same red pottage for I am faint therefore was his name called Edom. 31 And Jacob said Sell me this day thy birth-right 32 And Esau said Behold I am †Heb. going to die at the point to die and what profit shall this birth-right do to me 33 And Jacob said Swear to me this day and he sware unto him and * Heb. 12.16 he sold his birth-right unto Jacob. 34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles and he did eat and drink and rose up and went his way thus Esau despised his birth-right CHAP. XXVI 1 Isaac because of famine went to Gerar. 2 God instructeth and blesseth him 7 He is reproved by Abimelech for denying his wife 12 He groweth rich 18 He diggeth Esek Sitnab and Rehoboth 26 Abimelech maketh a covenant with him at Beer-sheba 34 Esaus wives ANd there was a famine in the land besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham And Isaac went unto
and Hamor his father deceitfully and said because he had defiled Dinah their sister 14 And they said unto them We cannot do this thing to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised for that were a reproach unto us 15 But in this will we consent unto you If ye will be as we be that every male of you be circumcised 16 Then will we give our daughters unto you and we will take your daughters to us we will dwell with you we will become one people 17 But if ye will not hearken unto us to be circumcised then will we take our daughter and we will be gone 18 And their words pleased Hamor and Shechem Hamors son 19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing because he had delight in Jacobs daughter and he was more honourable then all the house of his father 20 ¶ And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city and communed with the men of their city saying 21 These men are peaceable with us therefore let them dwell in the land and trade therein for the land behold it is large enough fâ—â— them let us take their daughters to us for wives and let us give them our daughters 22 Onely herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us to be one people if every male among us be circumcised as they are circumcised 23 Shall not their cattel and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours onely let us consent unto them and they will dwell with us 24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkned all that went out of the gate of his city and every male was circumcised all that went out of the gate of his city 25 ¶ And it came to pass on the third day when they were sore that two of the sons of Jacob Simeon and Levi Dinahs brethren took each man his sword and came upon the city boldly and * Chap. 49.6 slew all the males 26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the †Heb. mouth edge of the sword and took Dinah out of Shechems house and went out 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain and spoiled the city because they had defiled their sister 28 They took their sheep and their oxen and their asses and that which was in the city and that which was in the field 29 And all their wealth and all their little ones and their wives took they captive and spoiled even all that was in the house 30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land amongst the Canaanites and the Perizzites and I being few in number they shall gather themselves together against me and slay me and I shall be destroyed I and my house 31 And they said Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot CHAP. XXXV 1 God sendeth Jacob to Beth-el 2 He purgeth his house of idols 6 He buildeth an altar at Beth-el 8 Deborah dieth at Allon-bachuth 9 God blesseth Jacob at Beth-el 16 Rachel travaileth of Benjamin and dieth in the way to Edar 22 Reuben lieth with Bilâ—ah 23 The sons of Jacob. 27 Jacob cometh to Isaac at Hebron 28 The age death and burial of Isaac ANd God said unto Jacob Arise go up to Beth-el and dwell there and make there an altar unto God that appeared unto thee * Chap. 27.43 when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother 2 Then Jacob said unto his houshold and to all that were with him Put away the strange gods that are among you and be clean and change your garments 3 And let us arise and go up to Beth-el and I will make there an altar unto God who answered me in the day of my distress and was with me in the way which I went 4 And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand and all their ear-rings which were in their ears and Jacob hid them under the oke which was by Shechem 5 And they journeyed and the terrour of God was upon the cities that were round about them and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob. 6 ¶ So Jacob came to Luz which is in the land of Canaan that is Beth-el he and all the people that were with him 7 And he built there an altar and * Chap. 28.19 called the place ‖ That is the God of Beth-el El-beth-el because there God appeared unto him when he fled from the face of his brother 8 But Deborah Rebekahs nurse died and she was buried beneath Beth-el under an oke and the name of it was called ‖ That is the oke of weeping Allon-bachuth 9 ¶ And God appeared unto Jacob again when he came out of Padan-aram and blessed him 10 And God said unto him Thy name is Jacob thy name shall not be called any more Jacob * Chap. 32.28 but Israel shall be thy name and he called his name Israel 11 And God said unto him I am God Almighty be fruitful and multiply a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee and kings shall come out of thy loyns 12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac to thee I will give it and to thy seed after thee will I give the land 13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him 14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him even a pillar of stone and he poured a drink-offering thereon and he poured oyl thereon 15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spake with him Beth-el 16 ¶ And they journeyed from Beth-el and there was but †Heb. a little piece of ground a little way to come to Ephrath and Rachel travailed and she had hard labour 17 And it came to pass when she was in hard labour that the midwife said unto her Fear not thou shalt have this son also 18 And it came to pass as her soul was in departing for she died that she called his name ‖ That is the son of my sorrow Ben-om but his father called him ‖ That is the son of the riâ—ht hand Benjamin 19 And Rachel died and was-buried in the way to Ephrath which is Beth lehem 20 And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave that is the pillar of Rachels grave unto this day 21 And Israel journeyed and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar 22 And it came to pass when Israel dwelt in that land that Reuben went and * Ch. 49.4 lay with Bilhah his fathers concubine and Israel heard it Now the sons of Jacob were twelve 23 The sons of Leah Reuben Jacobs first-born and Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Zebulun 24 The sons of Rachel Joseph and Benjamin 25 And the sons of Bilhah Rachels hand-maid Dan and Naphtali 26 And the sons of Zilpah Leahs
therefore and I will send thee unto Pharaoh that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt 11 ¶ And Moses sad unto God Who am I that I should go unto Pharaoh and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt 12 And he said Certainly I will be with thee and this shall be a token unto thee that I have sent thee When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt ye shall serve God upon this mountain 13 And Moses said unto God Behold when I come unto the children of Israel and shall say unto them The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you and they shall say to me What is his name What shall I say unto them 14 And God said unto Moses I AM THAT I AM And he said Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel I AM hath sent uâ— unto you 15 And God said moreover unto Moses Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel The LORD God of your fathers the God of Abraham the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob hath sent me unto you this is my name for ever and this is my memorial unto all generations 16 Go and gather the elders of Israel together and say unto them The LORD God of your fathers the God of Abraham of Isaac and of Jacob appeared unto me saying I have surely visited you and seen that which is done to you in Egypt 17 And I have said I will bring you up out of the affliction of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzâ—tes and the Hivites and the Jebusites unto a land slowing with milk and honey 18 And they shall hearken to thy voice and thou shalt come thou and the elders of Israel unto the king of Egypt and you shall say unto him The LORD God of the Hebrews hath met with us and now let us go we beseech thee three days journey into the wilderness that we may sacritice to the LORD our God 19 ¶ And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go ‖ Or but 〈◊〉 strong hand no not by a mighty hand 20 And I will stretch out my hand and smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midâ—â— thereof after that he will let you go 21 And I will give this people favour in the sight of the Egyptians and it shall come to pass that when ye go ye shall not go empty 22 * Ch. 11.2 12.35 But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour and of her that sojourneth in her house jewels of silver and jewels of gold and raiment and ye shall put them upon your sons and upon your daughters and ye shall spoil ‖ Or Egypt the Egyptians CHAP. IV. 1 Moses rod is turned into a serpent 6 His band is leprous 10 He is lotb to be sent 14 Aaron is appointed to assist him 18 Moses departeth from Jethro 21 Gods message to Pharaob 24 Zipporah circumciseth her son 27 Aaron is sent to next Moses 31 The people beleeveth them ANd Moses answered and said But behold they will not beleeve me nor hearken unto my voice for they will say The LORD hath not appeared unto thee 2 And the LORD said unto him What is that in thine hand And he said A rod. 3 And he said Cast it on the ground and he cast it on the ground and it became a serpent and Moses fled from before it 4 And the LORD said unto Moses Put forth thy hand and take it by the tail And he put forth his hand and caught it and it became a rod in his hand 5 That they may beleeve that the LORD God of their fathers the God of Abraham the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob hath appeared unto thee 6 ¶ And the LORD said furthermore unto him Put now thine hand into thy bosome and he put his hand into his bosome and when he took it out behold his hand was leprous as snow 7 And he said Put thine hand into thy bosome again and he put his hand into his bosome again and plucked it out of his bosome and behold it was turned again as his other flesh 8 And it shall come to pass if they will not beleeve thee neither hearken to the voice of the first signe that they will beleeve the voice of the latter signe 9 And it shall come to pass if they will not beleeve also these two signs neither hearken unto thy voice that thou shalt take of the water of the river and pour it upon the dry-land and the water which thou takest out of the river †Heb. shall be and shall be shall become bloud upon the dry-land 10 ¶ And Moses said unto the LORD O my Lord I am not †Heb. a man of words eloquent neither †Heb. since yestâ—rday nor since the third day her tofore nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant but I am slow of speech and of a slow tongue 11 And the LORD said unto him Who hath made mans mouth or who maketh the dumb or deas or the seeing or the blinde have not I the LORD 12 Now therefore go and I will be * Mat. 10 1â— Mat. 1.11 Luk. 12.11 with thy mouth and teach thee what thou shalt say 13 And he said O my Lord send I pray thee by the hand of him whâ—m thou ‖ Or shouldest wilt send 14 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses and he said Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother I know that he can speak well And also behold he cometh forth to meet thee and when he sâ—â—th 15 And thou shalt speak unto him and put words in his mouth and I will be with thy mouth and with his mouth and will teach you what ye shall do 16 And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people and he shall be even he shall be to thee in stead of a mouth and * Ch. 7.1 thou shalt be to him in stead of God 17 And thou shalt take this rod in thine hand wherewith thou shalt do signs 18 ¶ And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father in law and said unto him Let me go I pray thee and return unto my brethren which art in Egypt and see whâ—ther they be yet alive And Jethro said to Moses Go in peace 19 And the LORD said unto Moses in Midian Go return into Egypt for all the men are dead which fought thy life 20 And Moses took his wife and his sons and set them upon an aâ—s and he returned to the land of Egypt And Moses took the rod of God in his hand 21 And the LORD said unto Moses When thou goâ—st to return into Egypt see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh which I have put in thine hand but I will harden his heart that he shall not let the people go
22 And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh Thus saith the LORD Israel is my son even my first-born 23 And I say unto thee Let my son go that he may serve me and it thou refuse to let him go behold I will slay thy son even thy first born 24 ¶ And it came to pass by the way in the inn that the LORD met him and sought to kill him 25 Then Zipporah took a sharp ‖ Or knife stone and cut off the sore-skin of her son and †Heb. made it touth cast it at his feet and said Sarely a bloudy husband art thou to me 26 So he let him go then she said A bloudy husband thou art because of the circumcision 27 ¶ And the LORD said to Aaron Go into the wilderness to meet Moses And he went and met him in the mount of God and kisâ—â—â— him 28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of the LORD who had sent him and all the signs which he had commanded him 29 ¶ And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel 30 And Aaron spake all the words which the LORD had spoken unto Moses and did the signs in the sight of the people 31 And the people beseeved and when they heard that the LORD had vinted the children of Israel and that he had looked upon their affliction then they bowed their heads and worshipped CHAP. V. 1 Pharaoh ebideth Moses and Aaron for their message 5 He increaseth the Israelites task 15 He checketh their complaints 19 They cry out upon Moses and Aaron 22 Moses complaineth to God ANd afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Let my people go that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness 2 And Pharaoh said Who is the LORD that I should obey his voice to let Israel go I know not the LORD neither will I let Israel go 3 And they said * Ch. 3. â—8 The God of the Hebrews hath met with us let us go we pray thee three days journey into the desert and sacrifice unto the LORD our God lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword 4 And the king of Egypt said unto them Wherefore do ye Moses and Aaron let the people from their works get you unto your burdens 5 And Pharaoh said Behold the people of the land now are many and you make them rest from their burdens 6 And Pharaoh commanded the same day the task-masters of the people and their officers saying 7 Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick as heretofore let them go and gather straw for themselves 8 And the tale of the bricks which they did make heretofore you shall lay upon them you shall not diminish ought thereof for they be idle therefore they cry saying Let us go and sacrifice to our God 9 †Heb. let the work â—e heavy upon the men Let there more work be laid upon the men that they may labour therein and let them not regard vain words 10 ¶ And the task-masters of the people went out and their officers and they spake to the people saying Thus saith Pharaoh I will not give you straw 11 Go ye get you straw where you can find it yet not ought of your work shall be diminished 12 So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw 13 And the task-masters hasted them saying Fulfil your works your †Heb. a matter of a day in biâ— day daily tasks as when there was straw 14 And the officers of the children of Israel which Pharaohs task-masters had set over them were beaten and demanded Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day as heretofore 15 ¶ Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh saying Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants 16 There is no straw given unto thy servant and they say to us Make brick and behold thy servants are beaten but the fault is in thine own people 17 But he said Ye are idle ye are idle therefore ye say Let us go and do sacrifice to the LORD 18 Go therefore now and work for there shall no straw be given you yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks 19 And the officers of the children of Israel did see that they were in evil case after it was said Ye shall not minish ought from your bricks of your daily task 20 ¶ And they met Moses and Aaron who stood in the way as they came forth from Pharaoh 21 And they said unto them The LORD look upon you and judge because you have made our savour †Heb. to stink to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants to put a sword in their hands to slay us 22 And Moses returned unto the LORD and said Lord wherefore â—aâ—t thou so evil intreated this people why is it that thou hast sent me 23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name he hath done evil to this people †Heb. delivering thou so it delivered neither hast thou delivered thy people at all CHAP. VI. 1 God reneweth his promise by his name JEHOVAH 14 The geneadogy of Reuben 15 of Simeon 16 of Levi of whom came Moses and Aaron THen the LORD said unto Moses Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh for with a strong hand shall he let them go and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land 2 And God spake unto Moses and said unto him I am the LORD 3 And I appeared unto Abraham unto Isaac and unto Jacob by the name of God Almighty but by my name JEHOVAH was I not knowâ— to them 4 And I have also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan the land of their pilgrimage wherein they were strangers 5 And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel whom the Egyptians keep in bondage and I have remembred my covenant 6 Wherefore say unto the children of Israel I am the LORD and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians and I will rid you out or their bondage and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm and with great judgements 7 And I will take you to me for a people and I will be to you a God and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians 8 And I will bring you in unto the land concerning the which I did †Heb. list up my hand swear to give it to Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob and I will give it you for an heritage I am the LORD 9 ¶ And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel but they hearkned not unto Moses for †Heb. shâ—rtness or
straitness anguish of spirit and for cruel bondage 10 And the LORD spake unto Moles saying 11 Go in speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt that he let the children of Israel go out of his land 12 And Moses spake before the LORD saying Behold the children of Israel have not hearkned unto me how then shall Pharaoh hear me who am of uncircumcised lips 13 And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron and gave them a charge unto the children of Israel and unto Pharaoh king of Egypt to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt 14 ¶ These be the heads of their fathers houses * Gen. 46.9 1 Chr. 5.3 The sons of Reuben the first born of Israel Hanoch and Pallu Hezron and Carmi these be the families of Reuben 15 * 1 Chr. 4.24 And the sons of Simeon Jemuel and Jamin and Ohad and Jachin and Zohar and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman these are the families of Simeon 16 ¶ And these are the names of * Num. 3. â—â— 1 Chr. 6.1 the sons of Levi according to their generations Gershon and Kohath and Merari And the years of the life of Levi were an hundred thirty and seven years 17 The sons of Gershon Libni and Shimi according to their families 18 And * Num. 26.57 1 Chr. 6.2 the sons of Kohath Amram and Izhar and Hebron and Uzziel And the years of the life of Kohath were an hundred thirty and three years 19 And the sons of Merari Mahali and Mushi these are the families of Levi according to their generations 20 And * Ch. 2.2 Num. 26.59 Amram took him Jochebed his fathers sister to wife and she bare him Aaron and Moses And the years of the life of Amram were an hundred and thirty and seven years 21 ¶ And the sons of Izhar Korah and Nepheg and Zichri 22 And the sons of Uzziel Mishael and Eizaphan and Zithri 23 And Aaron took him Elisheba daughter of Amminadab sister of Naashon to wife she bare him Nadab Abihu Eleazar and I thamar 24 And the sons of Korah Aâ—lir and Elkanah and Abiasaph these are the families of the Korhites 25 And Eleazar Aarons son took him one of the daughters of Putiel to wife and * Num. 25.11 she bare him Phineas these are the heads of the fathers of the Levites according to their families 26 These are that Aaron and Moses to whom the LORD said Bring out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their armies 27 These are they which spake to Pharaoh king of Egypt to bring out the children of Israel from Egypt these are that Moses and Aaron 28 ¶ And it came to pass on the day when the LORD spake unto Moes in the land of Egypt 29 That the LORD spake unto Moses saying I am the LORD speak thou unto Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say unto thee 30 And Moses said before the LORD Behold I am of uncircumcised lips and how shall Pharaoh hearken unto me CHAP. VII 1 Moses is encouraged to go to Pharaoh 7 His aâ—e 8 His rod is turned into a serpent 11 The sorcerers do the like 13 Pharaohs heart is hardned 14 Gods massage to Pharaoh 19 the river is turned into bloud ANd the LORD said unto Moses See I have made thee a god to Pharaoh and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet 2 Thou shalt speak all that I command thee and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh that he send the children of Israel out of his land 3 And I will harden Pharaohs heart and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt 4 But Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you that I may lay my hand upon Egypt and bring forth mine armies and my people the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by great judgements 5 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD when I stretch forth mine hand upâ—â— Egypt and bring out the children of Israel from among them 6 And Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them so did they 7 And Moses was fourscore years old and Aaron fourscore and three years old when they spake unto Pharaoh 8 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron saying 9 When Pharaoh shall speak unto you saying Shew a miracle for you then thou shalt say unto Aaron Take thy rod and caâ—t it before Pharaoh and it shall become a serpent 10 ¶ And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh and they did so as the LORD had commanded and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants and it became a serpent 11 Then Pharaoh also called the wifemen and the sorcerers now the magicians of Egypt they also did in like manner with their inchantments 12 For they cast down every man his rod and they became serpents but Aarons rod twallowed up their rods 13 And he hardned Pharaohs heart that he hearkned not unto them as the LORD had said 14 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Pharaohs heart is hardned he refuseth to let the people go 15 Get thee unto Pharaoh in the morning 〈◊〉 he goeth out unto the water and thou shalt stand by the rivers brink against he come and the rod which was turned to a serpent shalt thou take into thine hand 16 And thou shalt say unto him The LORD God of the Hebrews hath sent me unto thee saying Let my people go that they may serve me in the wilderness and behold hitherto thou wouldest not hear 17 Thus saith the LORD In this thou shalt know that I am the LORD behold I will smite with the â—od that is in mine hand upon the waters which are in the river and they shall be turned to bloud 18 And the fish that is in the river shall die and the river shall stink and the Egyptians shall lothe to drink of the water of the river 19 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses Say unto Aaron Take thy rod and stretch out thine hand upon the waters of Egypt upon their streams upon their rivers and upon their ponds and upon all their †Heb gathering of their waters pools of water that they may become bloud and that there may be bloud throughout all the land of Egypt both in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone 20 And Moses and Aaron did so as the LORD commanded and he * Ch. 17.5 lift up the rod and smote the waters that were in the river in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants and all the * Ps 78.44 waters that were in the river were turned into bloud 21 And the fish that was in the river died and the river stunk and the Egyptians could not drink of the water of the river and there was bloud throughout all the land of Egypt 22 * Wisd 17.7 And the magicians of Egypt did so with their inchantments and Pharaohs heart was hardned
neither did he hearken unto them as the LORD had said 23 And Pharaoh turned and went into his house neither did he set his heart to this also 24 And all the Egyptians digged round about the river for water to drink for they could not drink of the water of the river 25 And seven dayes were fulfilled after that the LORD had smitten the river CHAP. VIII 1 Frogs are sent 8 Pharaoh sueth to Moses 12 and Moses by prayer removeth them away 16 The dust is turned into lice which the magicians could not do 20 The swarms of flies 25 Pharaoh inclineth to let the people go 32 but yet is hardened ANd the LORD spake unto Moses Go unto Pharaoh and say unto him Thus saith the LORD Let my people go that they may serve me 2 And if thou refuse to let them go behold I will smite all thy borders with frogs 3 And the river shall bring forth frogs abundantly which shall go up and come into thine house and into thy bed-chamber and upon thy bed and into the house of thy servants and upon thy people and into thine ovens and into thy ‖ Or dough kneading-troughâ— 4 And the frogs shall come up both on thee and upon thy people and upon all thy servants 5 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses Say unto Aaron Stretch forth thine haâ—d with thy rod over the streams over the rivers and over the ponds and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt 6 And Aaâ—on stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt 7 * Wiâ—â— 17.7 And the Magicians did so with their inchantments and brought up frogs upon the land of Egypt 8 ¶ Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron and said Intreat the LORD that he may take away the frogs from me and from my people and I will let the people go that they may do sacrifice unto the LORD 9 And Moses said unto Pharaoh ‖ Or have this bonour over me c. Glory over me ‖ Or arainst when when shall I intreat for thee and for thy servants and for thy people †Heb. to cut off to destroy the frogs from thee and thy houses that they may remain in the river onely 10 And he said ‖ Or against to morrow To morrow And he said Be it according to thy word that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the LORD our God 11 And the frogs shall depart from thee and from thy houses and from thy servants and from thy people they shall remain in the river onely 12 And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh and Moses cried unto the LORD because of the frogs which he had brought against Pharaoh 13 And the LORD did according to the word of Moses and the frogs died out of the houses out of the villages and out of the fields 14 And they gathered them together upon heaps and the land stank 15 But when Pharaoh saw that there was respite he hardned his heart and hearkned not unto them as the LORD had said 16 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Say unto Aaron Stretch out thy rod and smite the dust of the land that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt 17 And they did so for Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod and smote the dust of the earth and it became lice in man and in beaâ—t all the dust of the land became lice throughout all the land of Egypt 18 And the magicians did so with their inchantmentâ— to bring forth lice but they could not so there were lice upon man and upon beast 19 Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh This is the finger of God and Pharaohâ— heart was hardned and he hearkned not unto them as the LORD had said 20 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Rise up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh â—o he cometh forth to the water and say unto him Thus saith the LORD Let my people go that they may serve me 21 Else if thou wilt not let my people go behold I will send ‖ Or a mixture of noysome câ—asts c. swarms of flies upon thee and upon thy servants and upon thy people and into thy houses and the houses of the Egyptians shall be â—ull of swarms of flies and also the ground whereon they are 22 And I will sever in that day the laâ—d of Goshen in which my people dwell that no swarms of flies shall be there to the end thou mayest know that I am the LORD in the midâ—t of the earth 23 And I will put †Heb. a redemption a division between my people and thy people ‖ Or by to morrow to morrow shall this signe be 24 And the LORD did soâ—and * Wisd 16. â— there came a grievous swarm of flies into the house of Pharaoh and into his servants houses and into all the land of Egypt the land was ‖ Or destroyed corrupted by reason of the swarm of flies 25 ¶ And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron and said Go ye sacriâ—ice to your God in the land 26 And Moses said It is not meet so to do for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to the LORD our God Lo shall we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes and will they not stone us 27 We will go three dayes journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD our God as * Ch. 3. â—8 he shall command us 28 And Pharaoh said I will let you go that ye may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness onely you shall not go very far away intreat for me 29 And Moses said Behold I go out from thee and I will intreat the LORD that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh from hiâ— servants and from his people to morrow but let not Pharaoh deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD 30 And Moses went out from Pharaoh and intreated the LORD 31 And the LORD did according to the word of Moses and he removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh from his servants and from his people there remained not one 32 And Pharaoh hardned his heart at this time also neither would he let the people go CHAP. IX 1 The murrain of beasts 8 The plague of boyls and blains 12 The message about the hail 22 The plague of hail 27 Pharaoh sueth to Moses 35 but yet is hardned THen the LORD said unto Moses Go in unto Pharaoh and tell him Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews Let my people go that they may serve me 2 For if thou refuse to let them go and wilt hold them still 3 Behold the hand of the LORD is upon thy cattel which is in the field upon the horses upon the asses upon the camels upon the oxen and upon the sheep there shall be
searful in praises doing wonders 12 Thou stretchedst out thy right hand the earth swallowed them 13 Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation 14 * Deut. 2.25 Josh 2.9 The people shall hear and be afraid sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina 15 Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed the mighty men of Moab trembling shall take hold upon them all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away 16 * Deut. 2.15 Josh 2.9 Fear and dread shall fall upon them by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone till thy people pass over O LORD till the people pass over which thou hast purchased 17 Thou shalt bring them in c plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance in the place O LORD which thou hast made for thee to dwell in in the Sanctuary O LORD which thy hands have established 18 The LORD shall reign for ever and ever 19 For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his hors-men into the sea and the LORD brought again the waters of the sea upon them but the children of Israel went on dry-land in the midst of the sea 20 ¶ And Miriam the prophetess the sister of Aaron took a timbrel in her hand and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances 21 And Miriam answered them Sing ye to the LORD for he hath triumphed gloriously the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea 22 So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea and they went out into the wilderness of Shur and they went three days in the wilderness and sound no water 23 ¶ And when they came to Marah they could not drink of the waters of Marah for they were bitter therefore the name of it was called †That is bitterness Marah 24 And the people murmured against Moses saying What shall we drink 25 And he cried unto the Lord and the LORD shewed him a * Ecclus 38.5 tree which when he had cast into the waters the waters were made sweet there he made for them a statute and an ordinance and there he proved them 26 And said If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God and wilt do that which is right in his sight and wilt give car to his commandments and keep all his statutes I will put none of these diseases upon thee which I have brought upon the Egyptians for I am the the LORD that healeth thee 27 ¶ * Numb 33.9 And they came to Elim where were twelve wells of water and threescore and ten palm-trees and they encamped there by the waters CHAP. XVI 1 The Israelites come to Sin 2 They murmure for want of bread 4 God promiseth them bread from heaven 11 Quails are sent 14 and manna 16 The ordering of manna 25 It was not to be found on the sabbath 32 An owner of it is preserved ANd they took their journey from Elim and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin which is between Elim and Sinai on the fifteenth day of the second moneth after their departing out of the land of Egypt 2 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness 3 And the children of Israel said unto them Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt when we sat by the flesh-pots and when we did eat bread to the full for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger 4 ¶ Then said the LORD unto Moses Behold I will rain bread from heaven for you and the people shall go out and gather †Heb. the portion of a say in his day a certain rate every day that I may prove them whether they will walk in my law or no. 5 And it shall come to pass that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in it shall be twice as much as they gather daily 6 And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel At even then ye shall know that the LORD hath brought you out from the land of Egypt 7 And in the morning then ye shall see the glory of the LORD for that he heareth your murmurings against the LORD And what are we that ye murmure against 〈◊〉 8 And Moses said This shall be when the LORD shall give you in the evening â—iâ—sh to eat and in the morning bread to the fâ—ll for that the LORD heareth your murmurings which ye murmure against him And what are 〈◊〉 morning are nor against us but against the LORD 9 ¶ And Moses spake unto Aaron Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel Come near before the LORD for he hath heard your murmurings 10 And it came to pass as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel that they looked toward the wilderness and behold the glory of the LORD * Chap. 13.21 appeared in the cloud 11 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 12 I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel speak unto them saying At even ye shall eat flesh and in the morning ye shall be silled with bread and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God 13 And it came to pass that at even * Numb 11.31 the quails came up and covered the camp and in the morning the dew lay round about the host 14 And when * Numb 11.7 Psa 78.24 Wis 16.20 the dew that lay was gone up behold upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing as small as the hear frost on the ground 15 And when the children of Israel saw it they said one to another ‖ Or What is this or It is a portion It is manna for they wist not what it was And Moses said unto them * Joh. 6.31 2 Cor. 10.3 This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat 16 ¶ This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded Gather of it every man according to his eating an omer †Heb. by the poll or bead for every man according to the number of your †Heb. soult persons take ye every man for them which are in his tents 17 And the children of Israel did so and gathered some more some less 18 And when they did mete it with an omer * 2 Cor. 8.25 he that gathered much had nothing over and he that gathered little had no lack they gathered every man according to his eating 19 And Moses said Let no man leave of it till the morning 20 Notwithstanding they hearkned not unto Moses but some of them left of it until the morning and it bred worms and stank And Moses was wroth with
them 21 And they gathered it every morning every man according to his eating and when the sun waxed hot it melted 22 ¶ And it came to pass that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread two omers for one man and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses 23 And he said unto them This is that which the LORD hath said To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD bake that which ye will bake to day and seethe that ye will seethe and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning 24 And they laid it up tâ—ll the morning as Moses bade and it did not stink neither was there any worm therein 25 And Moses said Eat that to day for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD to day ye shall not finde it in the field 26 Six days ye shall gather it but on the seventh day which is the sabbath in it there shall be none 27 ¶ And it came to pass that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather and they found none 28 And the LORD said unto Moses How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws 29 See for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days abide ye every man in his place let no man go out of his place on the seventh day 30 So the people rested on the seventh day 31 And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna and it was like coriander-seed white and the taste of it was like wasers made with honey 32 ¶ And Moses said This is the thing which the LORD commandeth Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations that they may see the bread wherewith I have fed you in the wilderness when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt 33 And Moses said unto Aaron Take a pot and put an omer full of manna therein and lay it up before the LORD to be kept for your generations 34 As the LORD commanded Moses so Aaron laid it up before the testimony to be kept 35 And the children of Israel did eat manna fourty years * Jos 5.12 Neh. 9.15 until they came to a land inhabited they did eat manna until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan 36 Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah CHAP. XVII 1 The people murmure for water at Rephidim 5 God sendeth them for water to the rock in Horeb. 8 Awalek is overcome by the holding up of Moses hands 15 Moses buildeth the altar JEHOVAH-nissi ANd all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin after their journeys according to the commandment of the LORD and pitched in Rephidim and there was no water for the people to drink 2 * Numb 20.4 Wherefore the people did chide with Moses and said Give us water that we may drink And Moses said unto them Why chide you with me wherefore do ye tempt the LORD 3 And the people thirsted there for water and the people murmured against Moses and said Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt to kill us and our children our cattel with thirst 4 And Moses cried unto the LORD saying What shall I do unto this people they be almost ready to stone me 5 And the LORD said unto Moses Go on before the people and take with thee of the elders of Israel and thy rod wherewith * Chap. 7.20 thou smotest the river take in thine hand and go 6 * Numb 20.9 Psa 78.15 105.41 Wis 11.4 1 Cor. 10.4 Behold I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb and thou shalt smite the rock and there shall come water out of it that the people may drink And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel 7 And he called the name of the place ‖ That is tentation Massah and ‖ That is â—biding or strife Meribah because of the chiding of the children of Israel and because they tempted the LORD saying Is the LORD among us or not 8 ¶ * Deut. 25.17 Wis 11.3 Then came Amalek and sought with Israel in Rephidim 9 And Moses said unto * Called Jesus Acts 7.45 Joshua Choose us out men and go out fight with Amalek to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand 10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him and fought with Amalek and Moses Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill 11 And it came to pass when Moses held up his hand that Israel prevailed and when he let down his hand Amalek prevailed 12 But Moses hands were heavy and they took a stone and put it under him and he sat thereon and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands the one on the one side and the other on the other side and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun 13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword 14 And the LORD said unto Moses Write this for a memorial in a book and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua for * Numb 24 20. 1 Sam. 15.3 I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven 15 And Moses built an altar and called the name of it ‖ That is the LORD my banner JEHOVAH-niâ—li 16 For he said ‖ Or Because the hand of Amalek is against the throne of the LORD therefore c. Because †Heb. the hand upon the throne of the LORD the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation CHAP. XVIII 1 Jethro bringeth to Moses his wife and two sons 7 Moses entertaineth him 13 Jethro's counsel is accepted 27 Jethro departeth WHen * Chap. 2.16 Jethro the priest of Midian Moses father in law heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel his people and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt 2 Then Jethro Moses father in law took Zipporah Moses wife after he had sent her back 3 And her two sons of which the * Chap. 2.22 name of the one was ‖ That is a stranger there Gerihom for he said I have been an alien in a strange land 4 And the name of the other was ‖ That is my God is an help Eliezer for the God of my father said be was mine help and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh 5 And Jethro Moses father in law came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness where he encamped at the mount of God 6 And he said unto Moses I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee and thy wife and her two sons with her 7 ¶ And Moses went out to meet his father in

girdle of the ephod 6 And thou shalt put the mitre upon his head and put the holy crown upon the mitre 7 Then shalt thou take the anointing * Ch. 30.25 oyl and pour it upon his head and anoint him 8 â— â—â— Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the bullock 11 And thou shalt kill the bullock before the LORD by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 12 And thou shalt take of the bloud of the bullock and put it upon the horns of the altar with thy finger and pour all the bloud beside the bottom of the altar 13 And * Lev. 3. â— thou shalt take all the fat that covereth the inwards and ‖ It seemeth by anatomy and the Hebrew doctours to be the midriff the caul that is above the liver and the two kidneys and the fat that is upon them and burn them upon the altar 14 But the flesh of the bullock and his skin and his dung shalt thou burn with fire without the camp it is a sin-offering 15 ¶ Thou shalt also take one ram and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the ram 16 And thou shalt slay the ram and thou shalt take his bloud and sprinkle it round about upon the altar 17 And thou shalt cut the ram in pieces and wash the inwards of him and his legs and put them unto his pieces and ‖ Or upon unto his head 18 And thou shalt burn the whole ram upon the altar it is a burnt offering unto the LORD it is a sweet savour an offering made by fire unto the LORD 19 ¶ And thou shalt take the other ram and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands upon the head of the ram 20 Then shalt thou kill the ram and take of his bloud and put it upon the up of the right ear of Aaron and upon the tip of the right ear of his sons and upon the thumb of their right hand and upon the great toe of their right foot and sprinkle the bloud upon the altar round about 21 And thou shalt take of the bloud that is upon the altar and of the anointing oyl and sprinkle it upon Aaron and upon his garments and upon his sons and upon the garments of his sons with him and he shall be hallowed and his garments and his sons and his sons garments with him 22 Also thou shalt take of the ram the fat and the rump and the fat that covereth the inwards and the caul above the liver and the two kidneys and the fat that is upon them and the right shoulder for it is a ram of consecration 23 And one loaf of bread and one cake of oyled bread and one wafer out of the basket of the unleavened bread that is before the LORD 24 And thou shalt put all in the hands of Aaron and in the hands of his sons shalt †Heb. shake to and fro wave them for a wave-offering before the LORD 25 And thou shalt receive them of their hands and burn them upon the altar for a burnt-offering for a sweet savour before the LORD it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD 26 And thou shalt take the breast of the ram of Aarons consecrations and wave it for a wave-offering before the LORD and it shall be thy part 27 And thou shalt sanctifie the breast of the wave-offering and the shoulder of the heave-offering which is waved and which is heaved up of the ram of the consecration even of that which is for Aaron and of that which is for his sons 28 And it shall be Aarons and his sons by a statute for ever from the children of Israel for it is an heave-offering and it shall be an heave-offering from the children of Israel of the sacrifice of their peace-offerings even their heave-offering unto the LORD 29 ¶ And the holy garments of Aaron shall be his sons after him to be anointed therein and to be consecrated in them 30 And †Heb. he of his sons that son that is priest in his stead shall put them on seven days when he cometh into the tabernacle of the congregation to minister in the holy place 31 ¶ And thou shalt take the ram of the consecration and seethe his flesh in the holy place 32 And Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram and the * Lev. â— 31 Mat. 12.4 bread that is in the basket by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 33 And they shall eat those things wherewith the atonement was made to consecrate and to sanctifie them but a stranger shall not eat thereof because they are holy 34 And if ought of the flesh of the consecrations or of the bread remain unto the morning then thou shalt burn the remainder with fire it shall not be eaten because it is holy 35 And thus shalt thou do unto Aaron and to his sons according to all things which I have commanded thee seven days shalt thou consecrate them 36 And thou shalt offer every day a bullock for a sin-offering for atonement and thou shalt cleanse the altar when thou hast made an atonement for it and thou shalt anoint it to sanctifie it 37 Seven days thou shalt make an atonement for the altar and sanctifie it and it shall be an altar most holy whatsoever toucheth the altar shall be holy 38 ¶ Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar * Num. 2â— 3 two lambs of the first year day by day continually 39 The one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning and the other lamb thou shalt offer at even 40 And with the one lamb a tenth-deal of flour mingled with the fourth part of an hin of beaten oyl and the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink-offering 41 And the other lamb thou shalt offer at even and shalt do thereto according to the meat-offering of the morning and according to the drink-offering thereof for a sweet savour an offering made by fire unto the
LORD 42 This shall be a continual burnt-offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD where I will meet you to speak there unto thee 43 And there I will meet with the children of Israel and ‖ Or Israel the tabernacle shall be sanctified by my glory 44 And I will sanctifie the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar I will sanctifie also both Aaron and his sons to minister to me in the priests office 45 ¶ * Levit. 26.12 2 Cor. 6.16 And I will dwell amongst the children of Israel and will be their God 46 And they shall know that I am the LORD their God that brought them forth out of the land of Egypt that I may dwell amongst them I am the LORD their God CHAP. XXX 1 The altar of incense 11 The ransom of souls 17 The brasen laver 22 The holy anointing oyl 34 The composition of the perfume ANd thou shalt make an altar to burn Incense upon of shittim-wood shalt thou make it 2 A cubit shall be the length thereof and a cubit the breadth thereof four-square shall it be and two cubits shall be the height thereof the horns thereof shall be of the same 3 And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold the †Heb. roof top thereof and the †Heb. walls sides thereof round about and the horns thereof and thou shalt make unto it a crown of gold round about 4 And two golden rings shalt thou make to it under the crown of it by the two †Heb. ribs corners thereof upon the two sides of it shalt thou make it and they shall be for places for the staves to bear it withall 5 And thou shalt make the staves of shittim-wood and overlay them with gold 6 And thou shalt put it before the vail that is by the ark of the testimony before the mercy-seat that is over the testimony where I will meet with thee 7 And Aaron shall burn thereon †Heb. incense of spices sweet incense every morning when he dresseth the lamps he shall burn incense upon it 8 And when Aaron ‖ Or setteth up †Heb. causeth to ascend lighteth the lamps †Heb. between the two evens at even he shall burn incense upon it a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations 9 Ye shall offer no strange incense thereon nor burnt-sacrifice nor meat offering neither shall ye pour drink-offering thereon 10 And Aaron shall make an atonement upon the horns of it once in a year with the blood of the sin-offering of atonements once in the year shall he maâ—â— atonement upon it throughout your generations it is most holy unto the LORD 11 And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 12 * Num. 1.1.2 5. When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel after †Heb. them that are to be numbred their number then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul unto the LORD when thou numbrest them that there be no plague amongst them when thou numbrest them 13 This they shall give every one that passeth among them that are numbred half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary * Lev. 27.25 Numb 3.47 Ezek. 45.12 A shekel is twenty gerahs an hall-shekel shall be the offering of the LORD 14 Every one that passeth among them that are numbred from twenty years old and above shall give an offering unto the LORD 15 The rich shall not †Heb. multiply give more and the poor shall not †Heb. diminish give less then hall a shekel when they give an offering unto the LORD to make an atonement for your souls 16 And thou shalt take the atonement-money of the children of Israel and shalt appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of the congregation that it may be a memorial unto the children of Israel before the LORD to make an atonement for your souls 17 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 18 Thou shalt also make a laver of brass and his foot also of brass to wash withal and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar and thou shalt put water therein 19 For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands their feet thereat 20 When they go into the tabernacle of the congregation they shall wash with water that they die not or when they come near to the altar to minister to burn offering made by fire unto the LORD 21 So they shall wash their hands and their feet that they die not and it shall be a statute for eâ—er to them even to him and to his seed throughout their generations 22 ¶ Moreover the LORD spake unto Moses saying 23 Take thou also unto thee principal spices of pure myrrh five hundred shekels and of sweet cinnamon half so much even two hundred and fifty shekels and of sweet calamus two hundred fifty shekels 24 And of cassia five hundred shekels after the shekel of the sanctuary and of oyl-olive an * Chap. â— 29.40 hin 25 And thou shalt make it an oyl of holy ointment an ointment compound after the art of the ‖ Or perfumer apothecary it shall be an holy anointing oyl 26 And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith and the ark of the testimony 27 And the table and all his vessels and the candlestick and his vessels and the altar of incense 28 And the altar of burnt-offering with all his vessels and the laver and his foot 29 And thou shalt sanctifie them that they may be most holy whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy 30 And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them that they may minister unto me in the priests office 31 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel saying This shall be an holy anointing oyl unto me throughout your generations 32 Upon mans flesh shall it not be poured neither shall ye make any other like it after the composition of it it is holy and it shall be holy unto you 33 Whosoever compoundeth any like it or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger shall even be cut off from his people 34 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Take unto thee sweet spices stacte and onycha and galbanum these sweet spices with pure frankincense of each shall there be a like weight 35 And thou shalt make it a perfume a confection after the art of the apothecary †Heb. sâ—ited tempered together pure and holy 36 And thou shalt beat some of it very small and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation where I will meet with thee it shall be unto you most holy 37 And as for the perfume which thou shalt make you shall not make to your selves according to the composition thereof it shall be unto thee holy for the LORD 38 Whosoever shall make like unto
that to smell thereto shall even be cut off from his people CHAP. XXXI 1 Bezaleel and Aholiab are called and made meet for the work of the tabernacle 12 The observation of the sabbath is again commanded 18 Moses receiveth the two tables ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 See I have called by name Bezaleel the * 1 Chr. â— 20. son of Uri the son of Hur of the tribe of Judah 3 And I have filled him with the Spirit of God in wisdom and in understanding and in knowledge and in all manner of workmanship 4 To devise cunning works to work in gold in silver and in brass 5 And in cutting of stones to set them and in carving of timber to work in all manner of workmanship 6 And I behold I have given with him Aholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan and in the hearts of all that are wise-hearted I have put wisdom that they may make all that I have commanded thee 7 The tabernacle of the congregation and the ark of the testimony and the mercy-seat that is thereupon and all the †Heb. vessels furniture of the tabernacle 8 And the table and his furniture and the pure candlestick with all his furniture and the altar of incense 9 And the altar of burnt-offering with all his furniture and the laver and his foot 10 And the clothes of service and the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons to minister in the priests office 11 And the anointing oyl and sweet incense for the holy place according to all that I have commanded thee shall they do 12 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel saying Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep for it is a signe between me and you throughout your generations that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctifie you 14 * Chap. 20.8 Deut. 5. â—2 Ezek. 20.12 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore for it is holy unto you Every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death for whosoever doeth any work therein that soul shall be cut off from amongst his people 15 Six days may work be done but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest †Heb. holiness holy to the LORD whosoever doth any work in the sabbath-day he shall surely be put to death 16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath to observe the sabbath throughout their generations for a perpetual covenant 17 It is a signe between me and the children of Israel for ever for * Gen. 1.31 2. â— in six days the LORD made heaven and earth and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed 18 ¶ And he gave unto Moses when he had made an end of communing with him upon mount Sâ—nai * Deut. 9.10 two tables of testimony tables of stone written with the finger of God CHAP. †Heb carcase beast that dieth of it self and the fat of that which is torn with beasts may be used in any other use but ye shall in no wise eat of it 25 For whosoever eateth the fat of the beast of which men offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD even the soul that eateth it shall be cut off from his people 26 * Gen. 9.4 Chap. 3.17 17.14 Moreover ye shall eat no manner of bloud whether it be of fowl or of beast in any of your dwellings 27 Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of bloud even that soul shall be cut off from his people 28 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 29 Speak unto the children of Israel saying He that offereth the sacrifice of his peace offerings unto the LORD shall bring his oblation unto the LORD of the sacrifice of his peace-offerings 30 His own hands shall bring the offerings of the LORD made by fire the fat with the breast it shall he bring that * Exod 29.24 the breast may be waved for a wave-offering before the LORD 31 And the priest shall burn the fat upon the altar but the breast shall be Aarons and his sons 32 And the right shoulder shall ye give unto the priest for an heave-offering of the sacrifices of your peace-offerings 33 He among the sons of Aaron that offereth the bloud of the peace-offerings and the fat shall have the right shoulder for his part 34 For the wave-breast and the heave-shoulder have I taken of the children of Israel from off the sacrifices of their peace-offerings and have given them unto Aaron the priest and unto his sons by a statute for ever from among the children of Israel 35 ¶ This is the portion of the anointing of Aaron and of the anointing of his sons out of the offerings of the LORD made by fire in the day when he presented them to minister unto the LORD in the priests office 36 Which the LORD commanded to be given them of the children of Israel in the day that he anointed them by a statute for ever throughout their generations 37 This is the law of the burnt-offering of the meat-offering and of the sin-offering and of the trespass-offering and of the consecrations and of the sacrifice of the peace-offerings 38 Which the LORD commanded Moses in mount Sinai in the day that he commanded the children of Israel to offer their oblations unto the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai CHAP. VIII 1 Moses consecrateth Aaron and his sons 14 Their sin-offering 18 Their burnt-offering 22 The ram of consecrations 31 The place and time of their consecration ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 Take Aaron and his sons with him and * Ex. 28.2 4 the garments and * Ex. 30.24 the anointing oyl and a bullock for the sin-offering and two rams and a basket of unleavened bread 3 And gather thou all the congregation together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 4 And Moses did as the LORD commanded him and the assembly was gathered together unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation 5 And Moses said unto the congregation * Exod. 29.4 This is the thing which the LORD commanded to be done 6 And Moses brought Aaron his sons washed them with water 7 And he put upon him the coat and girded him with the girdle and clothed him with the robe and put the ephod upon him and he girded him with the curious girdle of the ephod and bound it unto him therewith 8 And he put the breast-plate upon him also he * Exod. 28.30 put in the breast-plate the Urim and Thummim 9 And he put the mitre upon his head also upon the mitre even upon his forefront did he put the golden plate the holy crown as the LORD * Exod. 28.39 c. commanded Moses 10 And Moses took the anointing oyl and anointed the tabernacle and all that was therein and sanctified them 11 And he sprinkled thereof upon the altar seven times and anointed the altar all his vessels both the laver his foot to sanctifie them 12 And he * Ps 133.2 Ecclus 45.15 poured of the anointing oyl upon Aarons head and anointed him to sanctifie him 13 And Moses brought Aarons sons and put coats upon them and girded them with girdles and †Heb. bound put bonnets upon them as the LORD commanded Moses 14 * Exod. 29.1 And he brought the bullock for the sin-offering and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the bullock for the sin-offering 15 And he slew it and Moses took the bloud and put it upon the horns of the altar round about with his finger and purified the altar and poured the bloud at the bottom of the altar and sanctified it to make reconciliation upon it 16 And he took all the fat that was upon the inwards and the caul above the liver and the two kidneys and their fat and Moses burned it upon the altar 17 But the bullock and his hide his flesh and his dung he burnt with fire without the camp as the LORD * Ex. 29.14 commanded Moses 18 ¶ And he brought the ram for the burnt-offering and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram 19 And he killed it and Moses sprinkled the bloud upon the altar round about 20 And he cut the ram into pieces and Moses burnt the head and the pieces and the fat 21 And he washed the inwards and the legs in water and Moses burnt the whole ram upon the altar it was a burnt-sacrifice for a sweet savour and an offering made by fire unto the LORD as the LORD commanded Moses 22 ¶ And * Ex. 29.31 he brought the other ram the ram of consecration and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram 23 And he slew it and Moses took of the bloud of it and put it upon the tip of Aarons right ear and upon the thumb of his right hand and upon the great toe of his right foot 24 And he brought Aarons sons and Moses put of the bloud upon the tip of their right ear and upon the thumbs of their right hands upon the great toes of their right feet and Moses sprinkled the bloud upon the altar round about 25 And he took the fat and the rump and all the fat that was upon the inwards and the caul above the liver and the two kidneys and their fat and the right shoulder 26 And out of the basket of unleavened bread that was before the LORD he took one unleavened cake and a cake of oyled bread and one wafer and put them on the fat and upon the right shoulder 27 And he put all * Ex. 27.24 c. upon Aarons hands and upon his sons hands and waved them for a wave-offering before the LORD 28 And Moses took them
from off their hands and burnt them on the altar upon the burnt-offering they were consecrations for a sweet savour it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD 29 And Moses took the breast and waved it for a wave offering before the LORD for of the ram of consecration it was Moses * Exe. 29.26 part as the LORD commanded Moses 30 And Moses took of the anointing oyl and of the bloud which was upon the altar and sprinkled it upon Aaron and upon his garments and upon his sons and upon his sons garments with him and sanctified Aaron and his garments and his sons and his sons garments with him 31 ¶ And Moses said unto Aaron and to his sons Boyl the flesh at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and there * Ex. 29 31. eat it with the bread that is in the basket of consecrations as I commanded saying Aaron and his sons shall eat it 32 And that which remaineth of the flesh and of the bread shall ye burn with fire 33 And ye shall not go out of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation in seven days until the days of your consecration be at an end for * Ex. 29 31. seven days shall he consecrate you 34 As he hath done this day so the LORD hath commanded to do to make an atonement for you 35 Therefore shall ye abide at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation day and nigâ—t seven days and keep the charge of the LORD that ye die not for so I am commanded 36 So Aaron and his sons did all things which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses CHAP. IX 1 The first offerings of Aaron for himself and the people 8 The sin-offering 12 and the burnt-offering for himself 15 The offerings for the people 23 Moses and Aaron bless the people 24 Fire cometh from the Lord upon the altar ANd it came to pass on the eighth day that Moses called Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel 2 And he said unto Aaron * Ex. 29.1 Take thee a young call for a sin-offering and a ram for a burnt-offering without blemish and offer them before the LORD 3 And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak saying Take ye a kid of the goats for a sin-offering and a calf and a lamb both of the first year without blemish for a burnt offering 4 Also a bullock and a ram for peace-offerings to sacrifice before the LORD and a meat-offering mingled with oyl for to day the LORD will appear unto you 5 ¶ And they brought that which Moses commanded before the tabernacle of the congregation and all the congregation drew near and stood before the LORD 6 And Moses said This is the thing which the LORD commanded that ye should do and the glory of the LORD shall appear unto you 7 And Moses said unto Aaron Go unto the altar and offer thy sin-offering and thy burnt-offering and make an atonement for thy self and for the people and offer the offering of the people and make an atonement for them as the LORD commanded 8 ¶ Aaron therefore went unto the altar and slew the calf of the sin-offering which was for himself 9 And the sons of Aaron brought the bloud unto him and he dipt his finger in the bloud and put it upon the horns of the altar and poured out the bloud at the bottom of the altar 10 But the fat and the kidneys and the caul above the liver of the sin-offering he burnt upon the altar as the LORD commanded Moses 11 And the flesh and the hide he burnt with fire without the camp 12 And he slew the burnt-offering and Aarons sons presented unto him the bloud which he sprinkled round about upon the altar 13 And they presented the burnt-offering unto him with the pieces thereof and the head and he burnt them upon the altar 14 And he did wash the inwards and the legs and burnt them upon the burnt-offering on the altar 15 ¶ And he brought the peoples offering and took the goat which was the sin offering for the people and slew it and offered it for sin as the first 16 And he brought the burnt-offering and offered it according to the ‖ Or ordinance manner 17 And he brought the meat-offering and †Heb. filled his hand out of it took an handful thereof and burnt it upon the altar * Ex. 39.38 beside the burnt-sacrifice of the morning 18 He slew also the bullock and the ram for a sacrifice of peace-offerings which was for the people and Aarons sons presented unto him the bloud which he sprinkled upon the altar round about 19 And the fat of the bullock and of the ram the rump and that which covereth the inwards and the kidneys and the caul above the liver 20 And they put the fat upon the breasts he burnt the fat upon the altar 21 And the breasts and the right shoulder Aaron waved for a wave-offering before the LORD as Moses commanded 22 And Aaron lift up his hand towards the people and blessed them and came down from offering of the sin-offering and the burnt-offering and peace-offerings 23 And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of the congregation and came out and blessed the people and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the people 24 And * Gen. 4.4 1 Kin. 18.38 2 Chro. 7.1 2 Mac. 2.10 11. there came a fire out from before the LORD and consumed upon the altar the burnt-offering and the fat which when all the people saw they shouted and tell on their faces CHAP. X. 1 Nadab and Abihu for offering of strange fire are burnt by fire 6 Aaron and his sons are forbidden to mourn for them 8 The priests are forbidden wine when they are to go into the tabernacle 12 The law of eating the hâ—ly things 16 Aarons excuse for transgressing thereof ANd * Num. â— 4 26.6 1 Chr. 24.2 Nadab and Abihu the sons of Aaron took either of them his censer and put fire therein and put incense thereon and offered strange fire before the LORD which he commanded them not 2 And there went out fire from the LORD and devoured them and they died before the LORD 3 Then Moses said unto Aaron This is it that the LORD spake saying I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me and before all tâ—e people I will be glorified And Aaron held his peace 4 And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron and said unto them Come near carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp 5 So they went near and carried them in their coats out of the camp as Moses had said 6 And Moses said unto Aaron and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar his sons Uncover not your heads neither rend your clothes lest you die and lest wrath come upon all the people but let your brethren the
20 ¶ And when he hath made an end of reconciling the holy place the tabernacle of the congregation the altar he shall bring the live goat 21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel and all their transgressions in all their sins putting them upon the head of the goat and shall send him away by the hand of †Heb. a man of opportunity a fit man into the wilderness 22 And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land †Heb. of separation not inhabited and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness 23 And Aaron shall come into the tabernacle of the congregation and shall put off the linen garments which he put on when he went into the holy place and shall leave them there 24 And he shall wash his flesh with water in the holy place and put on his garments and come forth and offer his burnt-offering and the burnt-offering of the people and make an atonement for himself and for the people 25 And the fat of the sin-offering shall he burn upon the altar 26 And he that let go the goat for the scape-goat shall wash his clothes and bathe his flesh in water and afterward come into the camp 27 * Cha. â— 20 Heb. 13 1â— And the bullock for the sin-offering and the goat for the sin-offering whose bloud was brought in to make atonement in the holy place shall one carry forth without the camp and they shall burn in the fire their skins and their flesh and their dung 28 And he that burneth them shall wash his clothes and bathe his flesh in water and afterward he shall come into the camp 29 ¶ And this shall be a statute for ever unto you that in the seventh moneth on the tenth day of the moneth ye shall afflict your souls and do no work at all whether it be one of your own countrey of a stranger that sojourneth among you 30 For on that day shall the priest make an atonement foâ— you to cleanse you that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD 31 It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you and ye shall afflict your souls by a statute for ever 32 And the priest whom he shall anoint and whom he shall †Heb. till his hand consecrate to minister in the priests office in his fathers stead shall make the atonement and shall put on the linen clothes even the holy garments 33 And he shall make an atonement for the holy sanctuary and â—e shall make an atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation and for the altar and he shall make an atonement for the priests and for all the people of the congregation 34 And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins * Exod. 30.10 Hebr. â— 7 once a year And he did as the LORD commanded Moses CHAP. XVII 1 The bloud of all slain beasts must be offered to the Lord at the door of the tabernacle 7 They must not offer to devils 10 All eating of bloud is forbidden 15 and all that dâ—th alone or is torn ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons and unto all the children of Israel and say unto them This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded saying 3 What man soever there be of the house of Israel that killeth an ox or lamb or goat in the camp or that killeth it out of the camp 4 And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation to offer an offering unto the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD bloud shall be imputed unto that man he hath shed bloud and that man shall be cut off from among his people 5 To the end that the children of Israel may bring their sacrifices which they offer in the open field even that they may brâ—ng them unto the LORD unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation unto the priest and ofter them for peace-offerings unto the LORD 6 And the priest shall sprinkle the bloud upon the altar of the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and burn the sat for a * Exod. 20.18 Chap. 4.31 sweet savour unto the LORD 7 And they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils after whom they have gone a whoring This shall be a statute for ever unto them throughout their generaâ—ions 8 ¶ And thou shalt say unto them whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel or of the strangers which sojourn among you that offereth a burnt-offering or sacrifice 9 And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation to offer it unto the LORD even that man shall be cut off from among his people 10 ¶ And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel or of the strangers that sojourn among you that eateth any manner of bloud I will even set my face against that soul that eateth bloud and will cut him off from among his people 11 For the life of the flesh is in the bloud and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls for it is the bloud that maketh an atonement for the soul 12 Therefore I said unto the children of Israel No soul of you shall eat bloud neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat bloud 13 And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel or of the strangers that sojourn among you †Heb. that hunteth any hunting which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten he shall even pour out the bloud thereof and cover it with dust 14 * Gen. 9.4 For it is the life of all flesh the bloud of it is for the life thereof therefore I said unto the children of Israel Ye shall eat the bloud of no manner of flesh for the life of all flesh is the bloud thereof whosoever eateth it shall be cut off 15 And every soul that eateth †Heb. a carcase that which died of it self or that which was torn with beasts whether it be one of your own countrey or a stranger he shall both wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the even then shall he be clean 16 But if he wash them not nor bathe his flesh then he shall bear his iniquity CHAP. XVIII 1Vnlawful marriages 19Vnlawful lusts ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 Speak unto the children of Israel and say unto them I am the LORD your God 3 After the doings of the land of Egypt wherein ye dwelt shall ye not do and after the doings of the land of Canaan whither I bring you shall ye not do neither shall ye walk in their ordinances 4 Ye shall do my judgements and
shall first set forth 10 ¶ On the south-side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies and the captain of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur 11 And his host and those that were numbred thereof were fourty and six thousand and five hundred 12 And those which pitch by him shall be the tribe of Simâ—on and the captain of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai 13 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and â—ine thousand and three hundred 14 Then the tribe of Gad and the captain of the sons of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel 15 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and five thousand and six hundred and fifty 16 All that were numbred in the camp of Reuben were an hundred thousand and fifty and one thousand and four hundred and fifty throughout their armies and they shall set forth in the second rank 17 ¶ Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp as they encamp so shall they set forward every man in his place by their standards 18 ¶ On the west-side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies and the captain of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud 19 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty thousand and five hundred 20 And by him shall be the tribe of Manasseh and the captain of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur 21 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and two thousand and two hundred 22 Then the tribe of Benjamin and the captain of the sons of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni 23 And his host and those that were numbred of them were thirty and five thousand and four hundred 24 All that were numbred of the camp of Ephraim were an hundred thousand and eight thousand and an hundred throughout their armies and they shall go forward in the third rank 25 ¶ The standard of the camp of Dan shall be on the north-side by their armies and the captain of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai 26 And his host and those that were numbred of them were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred 27 And those that encamp by him shall be the tribe of Asher and the captain of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran 28 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fourty and one thousand and five hundred 29 Then the tribe of Naphtali and the captain of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan 30 And his host and those that were numbred of them were fifty and three thousand and four hundred 31 All they that were numbred in the camp of Dan were an hundred thousand and fifty and seven thousand and six hundred they shall go hindmost with their standards 32 ¶ These are those which were numbred of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers all those that were numbred of the camps throughout their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty 33 But the Levites were not numbred among the children of Israel as the LORD commanded Moses 34 And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses so they pitched by their standards and so they set forward every one after their families according to the house of their fathers CHAP. III. 1 The sons of Aaron 5 The Levites are given to the priests for the service of the tabernacleâ— 11 in stead of the first-born 14 The Levites are numbred by their families 21 The families number and charge of the Gershonites 27 of the Koâ—athites 33 of the Merarites 38 The place and charge of Moses and Aaron 40 The first-born are freed by the Levites 44 The overplus are redeemed THese also are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spake with Moses in mount Sinai 2 And these are the names of the sons of Aaron Nadab the * Exod. 6.23 first-born and Abihu Eleazar and Ithamar 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron the priests which were anointed †Heb. whose hand be filled whom he consecrated to minister in the priests office 4 * Lev. 10.1 Ch. 26.61 1 Chr. 24.2 And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered strange fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai and they had no children and Eleazar and Ithamar ministred in the priests office in the sight of Aaron their father 5 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 6 Bring the tribe of Levi near and present them before Aaron the priest that they may minister unto him 7 And they shall keep his charge and the charge of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of the congregation to do the service of the tabernacle 8 And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation and the charge of the children of Israel to do the service of the tabernacle 9 And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel 10 And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons and they shall wait on their priests office and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death 11 ¶ And the LORD spake unte Moses saying 12 And I behold I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel in stead of all the first-born that openeth the matrice among the children of Israel therefore the Levites shall be mine 13 Because all the first-born are mine * Exod. 13.2 Lev. 27.26 Chap. 8.16 Luk. 2.23 for on the day that I smote all the first born in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the first-born in Israel both man and beast mine they shall be I am the LORD 14 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai saying 15 Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers by their families every male from a moneth old and upward shalt thou number them 16 And Moses numbred them according to the †Heb. mouth word of the LORD as he was commanded 17 * Gen. 46.11 Exod. 6.16 Ch. 26.57 1 Chro. 6.1 And these were the sons of Levi by their names Gershon and Kohath and Merari 18 And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families Libni and Shimei 19 And the sons of Kohath by their families Amram and Izehar Hebron and Uzziel 20 And the sons of Merari by their families Mahli and Mushi these are the families of the Levites according to the house of their fathers 21 Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites and the family
the LORD hath not sent me 30 But if the LORD †Heb. create a creature make a new thing and the earth open her mouth and swallow them up with all that appertain unto them and they go down quick into the pit then ye shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD 31 ¶ * Ch. 27.3 Deut. 11.6 Ps 106.17 And it came to pass as he had made an end of speaking all these words that the ground clave asunder that was under them 32 And the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up their houses and all the men that appertained unto Korah and all their goods 33 They and all that appertained to them went down alive into the pit and the earth closed upon them and they perished from among the congregation 34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them for they said Lest the earth swallow us up also 35 And there came out a fire from the LORD and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense 36 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 37 Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest that he take up the censers out of the burning and scatter thou the fire yonder for they are hallowed 38 The censers of these sinners against their own souls let them make them broad plates for a covering of the altar for they offered them before the LORD therefore they are hallowed and they shall be a signe unto the children of Israel 39 And Eleazar the priest took the brasen censers wherewith they that were burnt had offered and they were made broad plates for a covering of the altar 40 To be a memorial unto the children of Israel that no stranger which is not of the seed of Aaron come near to offer incense before the LORD that he be not as Korah and as his company as the LORD said to him by the hand of Moses 41 ¶ But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron saying Ye have killed the people of the LORD 42 And it came to pass when the congregation was gathered against Moses and against Aaron that they looked toward the tabernacle of the congregation and behold the cloud covered it and the glory of the LORD appeared 43 And Moses and Aaron came before the tabernacle of the congregation 44 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 45 Get you up from among this congregation that I may consume them as in a moment and they fell upon their faces 46 ¶ And Moses said unto Aaron Take a censer and put fire therein from off the altar and put on incense and go quickly unto the congregation and make an atonement for them for there is wrath gone out from the LORD the plague is begun 47 And Aaron took as Moses commanded and ran into the midst of the congregation and behold the plague was begun among the people and he put on incense and made an atonement for the people 48 And he stood between the dead and the living and the plague was stayed 49 Now they that died in the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred beside them that died about the matter of Korah 50 And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and the plague was stayed CHAP. XVII 1 Aarons rod among all the rods of the tribes onely flourisheth 10 It is left for a monument against the rebels ANd the LORD spake unto Moses saying 2 Speak unto the children of Israel and take of every one of them a rod according to the house of their fathers of all their princes according to the house of their fathers twelve rods write thou every mans name upon his rod. 3 And thou shalt write Aarons name upon the rod of Levi for one rod shall be for the head of the house of their fathers 4 And thou shalt lay them up in the tabernacle of the congregation before the testimony * Exod. 25.22 where I will meet with you 5 And it shall come to pass that the mans rod whom I shall choose shall blossom and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel whereby they murmure against you 6 ¶ And Moses spake unto the children of Israel and every one of their princes gave him †Heb. a rod for one prince a rod for one prince a rod apiece for each prince one according to their fathers houses even twelve rods and the rod of Aaron was among their rods 7 And Moses laid up the rods before the LORD in the tabernacle of witness 8 And it came to pass that on the morrow Moses went into the tabernacle of witness and behold the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded and brought forth buds and bloomed blossoms and yeelded almonds 9 And Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD unto all the children of Israel and they looked and took every man his rod. 10 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses Bring * Hebr. 9.4 Aarons rod again before the testimony to be kept for a token against the †Heb. children of rebellion rebels and thou shalt quite take away their murmurings from me that they die not 11 And Moses did so as the LORD commanded him so did he 12 And the children of Israel spake unto Moses saying Behold we die we perish we all perish 13 Whosoever cometh any thing near unto the tabernacle of the LORD shall die shall we be consumed with dying CHAP. XVIII 1 The charge of the priests and Levites 9 The priests portion 21 The Levites portion 25 The beave-offering to the priests out of the Levites portion ANd the LORD said unto Aaron Thou and thy sons and thy fathers house with thee shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary and thou and thy sons with thee shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood 2 And thy brethren also of the tribe of Levi the tribe of thy father bring thou with thee that they may be joyned unto thee and minister unto thee but thou and thy sons with thee shall minister before the tabernacle of witness 3 And they shall keep thy charge and the charge of all the tabernacle onely they shall not come nigh the vessels of the sanctuary and the altar that neither they nor you also die 4 And they shall be joyned unto thee and keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation for all the service of the tabernacle and a stranger shall not come nigh unto you 5 And ye shall keep the charge of the sanctuary and the charge of the altar that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Israel 6 And I behold I have * Chap. 3.45 taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel to you they are given as a gift for the LORD to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation
the camp in a clean place and it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of separation it is a purification for sin 10 And he that gathereth the ashes of the heifer shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the even and it shall be unto the children of Israel and unto the stranger that sojourneth among them for a statute for ever 11 ¶ He that toucheth the dead body of any †Heb. soul of man man shall be unclean seven days 12 He shall purifie himself with it on the third day and on the seventh day he shall be clean but if he purifie not himself the third day then the seventh day he shall not be clean 13 Whosoever toucheth the dead body of any man that is dead and purifieth not himself defileth the tabernacle of the LORD and that soul shall be cut off from Israel because the water of separation was not sprinkled upon him he shall be unclean his uncleanness is yet upon him 14 This is the law when a man dieth in a tent all that come into the tent and all that is in the tent shall be unclean seven days 15 And every open vessel which hath no covering bound upon it is unclean 16 And whosoever toucheth one that is slain with a sword in the open fields or a dead body or a bone of a man or a grave shall be unclean seven days 17 And for an unclean person they shall take of the †Heb. dust ashes of the burnt heifer of purification for sin and †Heb. living waters shall be given running water shall be put thereto in a vessel 18 And a clean person shall take hyssop and dip it in the water and sprinkle it upon the tent and upon all the vessels and upon the persons that were there and upon him that touched a bone or one slain or one dead or a grave 19 And the clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day and on the seventh day and on the seventh day he shall purifie himself and wash his clothes and bathe himself in water and shall be clean at even 20 But the man that shall be unclean and shall not purifie himself that soul shall be cut off from among the congregation because he hath defiled the sanctuary of the LORD the water of separation hath not been sprinkled upon him he is unclean 21 And it shall be a perpetual statute unto them that he that sprinkleth the water of separation shall wash his clothes and he that toucheth the water of separation shall be unclean until even 22 And whatsoever the unclean person toucheth shall be unclean and the soul that toucheth it shall be unclean until even CHAP. XX. 1 The children of Israel come to Zin where Miriam dieth 2 They murmure for want of water 7 Moses smiting the rock bringeth forth water at Meribah 14 Moses at Kadesh desireth passage through Edom which is denied him 22 At mount Hor Aaron resigneth his place to Eleazar and dieth THen came the children of Israel even the whole congregation into the desert of Zin in the first moneth and the people abode in Kadesh and Miriam died there and was buried there 2 And there was no water for the congregation and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron 3 And the people * Ex. 17.2 chode with Moses and spake saying Would God that we had died * Ch. 11.33 when our brethren died before the LORD 4 And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness that we and our cattel should die there 5 And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt to bring us in unto this evil place it is no place of seed or of figs or vines or of pomegranates neither is there any water to drink 6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation and they fell upon their faces and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them 7 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses saying 8 Take the rod and gather thou the assembly together thou and Aaron thy brother and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes and it shall give forth his water and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink 9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD as he commmanded him 10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock and he said unto them Hear now ye rebels must we fetch you water out of this rock 11 And Moses lift up his hand and with his rod he smote the rock twice and the water came out abundantly and the congregation drank and their beasts also 12 ¶ And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron Because ye beleeved me not to sanctifie me in the eyes of the children of Israel therefore ye shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them 13 * Pâ— 1â—6 32 c. This is the water of ‖ That is strite Meribah because the children of Israel strove with the LORD and he was sanctified in them 14 ¶ And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king or Edom Thus saith thy brother Israel thou knowest all the travel that hath †Heb. found us befallen us 15 How our fathers went down into Egypt and we have dwelt in Egypt a long time and the Egyptians vexed us and our fathers 16 And when we cried unto the LORD he heard our voice and sent an Angel and hath brought us forth out of Egypt and behold we are in kadesh a city in the uttermost of thy border 17 Let us pass I pray thee through thy countrey we will not pass through the fields or through the vineyards neither will we drink of the water of the wells we will go by the kings high-way we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left until we have passed thy borders 18 And Edom said unto him Thou shalt not pass by me lest I come out against thee with the sword 19 And the children of Israel said unto him We will go by the high-way and if I and my cattel drink of thy water then I will pay for it I will onely without doing any thing else go through on my feet 20 And he said Thou shalt not go through And Edom came out against him with much people and with a strong hand 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border wherefore Israel turned away from him 22 ¶ And the children of Israel even the whole congregation journeyed from * Chap. 33.37 kadesh and came unto mount Hor. 23 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor by the coast of the land of Edom saying 24 Aaron shall be gathered unto his people for he shall not enter into the
Amorites which the LORD our God doth give unto us 21 Behold the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee go up and possess it as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee sear not neither be discouraged 22 ¶ And ye came near unto me every one of you and said We will send men before us and they shall search us out the land and bring us word again by what way we must go up and into what cities we shall come 23 And the saying pleased me well and * Numb 13.3 I took twelve men of you one of a tribe 24 And * Numb 1â— 24 they turned and went up into the mountain and came unto the valley of Eshcol and searched it out 25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down unto us and brought us word again and said It is a good land which the LORD our God doth give us 26 Notwithstanding ye would not go up but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God 27 And ye murmured in your tents and saâ—d Because the LORD hated us he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us 28 Whither shall we go up our brethren have †Heb. melted discouraged our heart saying The people is greater and taller then we the cities are great and walled up to heaven and moreover we have seen the sons of the * Numb 13.28 Anakims there 29 Then I said unto you Dread not neither be afraid of them 30 The LORD your God which goeth before you he shall fight for you according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes 31 And in the wilderness where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bare thee as a man doth bear his son in all the way that ye went until ye came into this place 32 Yet in this thing ye did not beleeve the LORD your God 33 * Exod. 13.21 Who went in the way before you to search you out a place to pitch your tents in in fire by night to shew you by what way ye should go and in a cloud by day 34 And the LORD heard the voice of your words and was wroth and sware saying 35 * Numb 14.29 Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that good land which I sware to give unto your fathers 36 Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh he shall see it and to him will I give the land that he hath troden upon and to his children because he hath †Heb. fulfilled to go after wholly followed the LORD 37 * Num 20.12 27.14 Ch. 3.26 4.21 34.4 Also the LORD was angry with me for your sakes saying Thou also shalt not go in thither 38 But Joshua the son of Nun which standeth before thee he shall go in thither Encourage him for he shall cause Israel to inherit it 39 Moreover your little ones which ye said should be a prey and your children which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil they shall go in thither and unto them will I give it and they shall possess it 40 But as for you turn ye and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea 41 Then ye answered and said unto me * Numb 14 4â— We have sinned against the LORD we will go up and fight according to all that the LORD our God commanded us And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war ye were ready to go up into the hill 42 And the LORD said unto me Say unto them Go not up neither fight for I am not among you lest ye be smitten before your enemies 43 So I spake unto you and ye would not hear but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD and †Heb. you were presumptuous and went up went presumptuously up into the hill 44 And the Amorites which dwelt in that mountain came out against you and chased you as bees do and destroyed you in Seir even unto Hormah 45 And ye returned and wept before the LORD but the LORD would not hearken to your voice nor give ear unto you 46 So ye abode in Kadesh many days according unto the days that ye abode there CHAP. II. 1 The story is continued that they were not to meddle with the Edomites 9 nor with the Moabites 17 nor with the Ammonites 24 But Sihon the Amorite was subdued by them THen we turned and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea as the LORD spake unto me and we compassed mount Seir many days 2 And the LORD spake unto me saying 3 Ye have â—ompassed this mountain long enough turn you north-ward 4 And command thou the people saying Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau which dwell in Seir and they shall be afraid of you take ye good heed unto your selves therefore 5 Meddle not with them for I will not give you of their land †Heb. even to the treading of the sole of the foot no not so much as a foot-breadth * Gen. 36.8 because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession 6 Ye shall buy meat of them for money that ye may eat and ye shall also buy water of them for money that ye may drink 7 For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness these fourty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee thou hast lacked nothing 8 And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau which dwelt in Seir through the way of the plain from Elath and from Ezion-gaber we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab 9 And the LORD said unto me ‖ Or Vse no hostâ—lâ—tâ— against Moab Distress not the Moabites neither contend with them in battel for I will not give thee of their land for a possession because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession 10 The Emims dwelt therein in times past a people great and many and tall as the Anakims 11 Which also were accounted giants as the Anakims but the Moabites call them Emims 12 * Gen. 36.20 The Horims also dwelt in Seir before-time but the children of Esau †Heb. inherited them succeeded them when they had destroyed them from before them and dwelt in their ‖ Or room stead as Israel did unto the land of his possession which the LORD gave unto them 13 Now rise up said I and get you over * Numb 21.12 the ‖ Or valley brook Zered and we went over the brook Zered 14 And the space in which we came from Kadesh-â—aâ—â—â—a until we were come over the brook Zered was thirty and eight years until all
he put in a basket and he put the broth in a pot and brought it out unto him under the oak and presented it 20 And the angel of God said unto him Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes and lay them upon this rock and pour out the broth And he did so 21 ¶ Then the angel of the LORD put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes and there rose up fire out of the rock and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes then the angel of the LORD departed out of his sight 22 And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the LORD Gideon said Alas O Lord GOD * Ex. 33.20 Ch. 13.22 for because I have seen an angel of the LORD face to face 23 And the LORD said unto him Peace be unto thee fear not thou shalt not die 24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD and called it ‖ That is the LORD send peace Jehovah-shalom unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites 25 ¶ And it came to pass the same night that the LORD said unto him Take thy fathers young bullock ‖ Or and. even the second bullock of seven years old and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath and cut down the grove that is by it 26 And build an altar unto the LORD thy God upon the top of this †Heb. strong place rock ‖ Or in an orderly manner in the ordered pâ—ace and take the second bullock and offer a burnt-sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down 27 Then Gideon took ten men of his servants and did as the LORD had said unto him and so it was bâ—cause he scared hâ—s fathers houshold and the men of the city that he could not do it by day that he did it by night 28 ¶ And when the men of the city arose early in the morning behold the altar of Baal was cast down and the grove was cut down that was by it and the second bulloâ—k was offered upon the altar that was built 29 And they said one to another Who hath done this thing And when they enquired and asked they said Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing 30 Then the men of the city said unto Joash Bring out thy son that he may die because 〈◊〉 hâ—th caâ—t down the altar of Baal and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it 31 And Joash said unto all that stood against him Will ye plead for Baal will ye save him he that will plead for him let him be put to death whilest it is yee mâ—rning it he be a god let him plead for himself because one hath cast down his altar 32 Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal saying Let Baal plead against him because he hath thrown down his altar 33 ¶ Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together and went over and pitched in the valley of Jazreel 34 But the spirit of the LORD †Heb. clothed came upon Gideon and he * Numb 10.3 Chap. 3.27 blew a trumpet and Abiezer †Heb. was called after him was gathered after him 35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh who also was gathered after him and he sent messengers unto Asher and unto Zebulun and unto Naphtali and they came up to meet them 36 ¶ And Gideon said unto God If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand as thou hast said 37 Behold I will put a fleece of wooll in the floor and if the dew be on the fleece onely and it be dry upon all the earth beside then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand as thou hast said 38 And it was so for he rose up early on the morrow and thrust the fleece together and wringed the dew out of the fleece a bowl-full of water 39 And Gideon said unto God * Gen. 18.32 Let not thine anger be hot against me and I will speak but this once Let me prove I pray thee but this once with the fleece let it now be dry onely upon the fleece and upon all the ground let there he dew 40 And God did to that night for it was dry upon the fleece onely and there was dew on all the ground CHAP. VII 1 Gideons army of two and thirty thousand is brought to three hundred 9 He is encouraged by the dream and interpretation of the barley-cake 16 His stratagem of trumpets and lamps in pitchers 24 The Ephraimites take Oreb and Zeeb THen Jerubbaal who is Gideon and all the people that were with him rose up early and pitched beside the well of Harod so that the host of the Midianites were on the north-side of them by the hill of Moreh in the valley 2 And the LORD said unto Gideon The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands left Israel vaunt themselves against me saying Mine own hand hath saved me 3 Now therefore go to proclaim in the ears of the people saying * Deu. 20.8 1 Mac. 3.56 Whosoever is fearful and afraid let him return and depart early from mount Gilead and there returned of the people twenty and two thousand and there remained ten thousand 4 And the LORD said unto Gideon The people are yet too many bring them down unto the water and I will try them for thee there and it shall be that of whom I say unto thee This shall go with thee the same shall go with thee and of whomsoever I say unto thee This shall not go with thee the same shall not go 5 So he brought down the people unto the water and the LORD said unto Gideon Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue as a dog lappeth him shalt thou set by himself likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink 6 And the number of them that lapped putting their hand to their mouth were three hundred men but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water 7 And the LORD said unto Gideon By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you and deliver the Midianites into thine hand and let all the other people go every man unto his place 8 So the people took victuals in their hand and their trumpets and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent and retained those three hundred men and the hoâ—t of Midian was beneath him in the valley 9 ¶ And it came to pass the same night that the LORD said unto him Arise get thee down unto the hoâ—t for I have delivered it into thine hand 10 But if thou fear to go down go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host 11 And thou shalt hear what they say and afterwards shall thine hands be

XX. 1 The Levite in a general assembly declareth his wrong 8 The decree of the assembly 12 The Benjamites being cited make head against the Israelites 18 The Israelites in two battels lose fourty thousand 26 They destroy by a stratagem all the Benjamites except six hundred THen all the children of Israel went out and the congregation was gathered together as one man from Dan even to Beer-sheba with the land of Gilead unto the LORD in Mizpeh 2 And the chief of all the people even of all the tribes of Israel presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword 3 Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh Then said the children of Israel Tell us how was this wickedness 4 And †Heb. the man the Levite the Levite the husband of the woman that was slain answered and said I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin I and my concubine to lodge 5 And the men of Gibeah rose against me and beset the house round about upon me by night and thought to have slain me and my concubine have they †Heb. humbled forced that she is dead 6 And I took my concubine and cut her in pieces and sent her throughout all the countrey of the inheritance of Israel for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel 7 Behold ye are all children of Israel give here your advice and counsel 8 ¶ And all the people arose as one man saying We will not any of us go to his tent neither will we any of us turn into his house 9 But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah we will go up by lot against it 10 And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel and an hundred of a thousand and a thousand out of ten thousand to fetch victual for the people that they may do when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel 11 So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city †Heb. fellows knit together as one man 12 ¶ And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin saying What wickedness is this that is done among you 13 Now therefore deliver us the men the children of Belial which are in Gibeah that we may put them to death and put away evil from Israel But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel 14 But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah to go out to battel against the children of Israel 15 And the children of Benjamin were numbred at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword beside the inhabitants of Gibeah which were numbred seven hundred chosen men 16 Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men * Chap. 3.15 left-handed every one could sling stones at an hair breadth and not miss 17 And the men of Israel beside Benjamin were numbred four hundred thousand men that drew sword all these were men of war 18 ¶ And the children of Israel arose and went up to the house of God and asked counsel of God and said Which of us shall go up first to the battâ—l against the children of Benjamin And the LORD said Judah shall go up first 19 And the children of Israel rose up in the morning and encamped against Gibeah 20 And the men of Israel went out to battel against Benjamin and the men of Israel put themselves in aray to fight against them at Gibeah 21 And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men 22 And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves and set their battel again in aray in the place where they put themselves in aray the first day 23 And the children of Israel went up and wept before the LORD until even and asked counsel of the LORD saying Shall I go up again to battel against the children of Benjamin my brother And the LORD said Go up against him 24 And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day 25 And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men all these drew the sword 26 ¶ Then all the children of Israel and all the people went up and came unto the house of God and wept and sat there before the LORD and fasted that day until even and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before the LORD 27 And the children of Israel enquired of the LORD for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days 28 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron stood before it in those days saying Shall I yet again go out to battel against the children of Benjamin my brother or shall I cease And the LORD said Go up for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand 29 And Israel set liers in

XVI 1 Ziba by presents and false suggestions obtaineth his masters inheritance 5 At Bahurim Shimei curseth David 9 David with patience abstaineth and restraineth others from revenge 15 Hushai insinuateth himself into Absaloms counsel 20 Abithophels counsel ANd when David was a little past the top of the hill behold Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him with a couple of asses saddled and upon them two hundred loaves of bread and an hundred bunches of raisins and an hundred of summer-fruits and a bottle of wine 2 And the king said unto Ziba What meanest thou by these And Ziba said The asses be for the kings houshold to ride on and the bread and summer-fruit for the young men to eat and the wine that suâ—h as be faint in the wilderness may drink 3 And the king said And where is thy masters son And Ziba said unto the king Behold he abideth at Jerusalem for he said To day shall the house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father 4 Then said the king to Ziba Behold thine are all that pertained unto Mephibosheth And Ziba said †Heb. Let the king live God save the king God save the king 17 And Absalom said to Hushai Is this thy kindness to thy friend why wentest thou not with thy friend 18 And Hushai said unto Absalom Nay but whom the LORD and this people and all the men of Israel choose his will I be and with him will I abide 19 And again whom should I serve should I not serve in the presence of his son as I have served in thy fathers presence so will I be in thy presence 20 ¶ Then said Absalom to Ahithophel Give counsel among you what we shall do 21 And Ahithophel said unto Absalom Go in unto thy fathers concubines which he hath left to keep the house and all Israel shall hear that thou art abhorred of thy father then shall the hands of all that are with thee be strong 22 So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house and Absalom went in unto his fathers concubines in the sight of all Israel 23 And the counsel of Ahithophel which he counselled in those days was as if a man had enquired at the †Heb. word oracle of God so was all the counsel of Ahithophel born with David and with Absalom CHAP. XVII 1 Ahithophels counsel is overthrown by Hushai's according to Gods appointment 15 Secret intelligence is sent unto David 23 Ahithophel hangeth himself 25 Amasa is made captain 27 David at Mahanaim is furnished with provision MOreover Ahithophel said unto Ahsalom Let me now choose out twelve thousand men and I will arise and pursue after David this night 2 And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak-handed and will make him afraid and all the people that are with him shall flee and I will smite the king onely 3 And I will bring back all the people unto thee the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned so all the people shall be in peace 4 And the saying †Heb. was right in the eyes of c. pleased Absalom well and all the elders of Israel 5 Then said Absalom Call now Hushai the Archite also and let us hear likewise †Heb.

IX 1 Elisha sendeth a young prophet with instructions to anoint Jehu at Ramoth-gilead 4 The prophet having done his message fleeth 11 Jehu being made king by the souldiers killeth Joram in the field of Naboth 27 Ahaziah is slain at Guy and buried at Jerusalem 30 Proud Jezebel is thrown down out of a window and eaten by dogs ANd Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the prophets and said unto him Gird up thy loyns and take this box of oyl in thine hand and go to Ramoth-gilead 2 And when thou comest thither look out there Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi and go in and make him arise up from among his brethren and carry him to an †Heb. chamber in a chamber inner chamber 3 Then * 1 King 19.16 take the box of oyl and pour it on his head and say Thus saith the LORD I have anointed thee king over Israel then open the door and flee and tarry not 4 ¶ So the young man even the young man the prophet went to Ramoth-gilead 5 And when he came behold the captains of the host were sitting and he said I have an errand to thee O captain And Jehu said Unto which of all us And he said To thee O captain 6 And he arose and went into the house and he poured the oyl on his head and said unto him Thus saith the LORD God of Israel I have anointed thee king over the people of the LORD even over Israel 7 And thou shalt smite the house of Ahab thy master that I may avenge the bloud of my servants the prophets and the bloud of all the servants of the LORD * 1 King 21 1◠at the hand of Jezebel 8 For the whole house of Ahab shall perish and * 1 Kin. 14.10 21.21 I will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against the wall and him that is shut up and left in Israel 9 And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of * 1 Kin. 14.10 21.22 Jeroboam the son of Nebat and like the house of * 1 Kin. 16.3 Baasha the son of Ahijah 10 And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the portion of Jezreel and there shall be none to bury her And he opened the door and fled 11 ¶ Then Jehu came forth to the servants of his lord and one said unto him Is all well wherefore came this mad fellow to thee And he said unto them Ye know the man and his communication 12 And they said It is false tell us now And he said Thus and thus spake he to me saying Thus
to the workmen and repaired therewith the house of the LORD 15 Moreover they reckoned not with the men into whose hand they delivered the money to be bestowed on workmen for they dealt faithfully 16 The trespass-money and sin-money was not brought into the house of the LORD it was the priests 17 ¶ Then Hazael king of Syria went up and fought against Gath and took it and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem 18 And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah his fathers kings of Judah had dedicate and his own hallowed things and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD and in the kings house and sent it to Hazael king of Syria and he †Heb. went up went away from Jerusalem 19 ¶ And the rest of the acts of Joash and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 20 And his servants arose and made 2 conspiracy and slew Joash in ‖ Or Betl-millo the house of Millo which goeth down to Silla 21 For Jozachar the son of Shimeath and Jehuzahad the son of Shomer his servants smote him and he died and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XIII 1 Jehoahaz his wicked reign 3 Jehoahaz oppressed by Hazael is relieved by prayer 8 Joash succeedeth him 10 His wicked reign 12 Jeroboam succeedeth him 14 Elisha dying prophesieth to Joash three victories over the Syrians 20 The Moabites invading the land Elisha's bones raise up a dead man 22 Hazael dying Joash getteth three victories over Ben-hadad IN †Heb. the twentieth year and third year the three and twentieth year of Joash the son of Ahaziah king of Judah Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria and reigned seventeen years 2 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD and †Heb. walked after followed the sins of Jerohoam the son of Nebat which made Israel to sin he departed not therefrom 3 ¶ And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria and into the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael all their days 4 And Jehoahaz besought the LORD and the LORD hearkned unto him for he saw the oppression of Israel because the king of Syria oppressed them 5 And the LORD gave Israel a saviour so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians and the children of Israel dwelt in their tents †Heb. aâ— yesterday and third day as before time 6 Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of Jeroboam who made Israel sin but †Heb. be walked walked therein and there †Heb. stood remained the grove also in Samaria 7 Neither did he leave of the people to Jehoahaz but fifty hors-men and ten chariots and ten thousand footmen for the king of Syria had destroyed them and had made them like the dust by threshing 8 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz and all that he did and his might are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 9 And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers and they buried him in Samaria and Joash his son reigned in his stead 10 ¶ In the thirty and seventh year of Joash king of Judah began Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israel in Samaria and reigned sixteen year 11 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel sin but he walked therein 12 And the rest of the acts of Joash and all that he did and his might wherewith he sought against Amaziah king of Judah are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 13 And Joash slept with his fathers Jeroboam sat upon his throne and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel 14 ¶ Now Elisha was tain sick of his sickness whereof he died and Joash the king of Israel came down unto him and wept over his face and said O my father my father the chariot of Israel and the hors-men thereof 15 And Elisha said unto him Take bowe and arrows and he took unto him bowe and arrows 16 And he said to the king of Israel †Heb. Make thine land to ride Put thine hand upon the bowe and he put his hand upon it and Elisha put his hands upon the kings hands 17 And he said Open the window east-ward and he opened it Then Elisha said Shoot and he shot And he said The arrow of the LORDs deliverance and the arrow of deliverance from Syria for thou shalt smite the Syrians in Aphek till thou have consumed them 18 And he said Take the arrows and he took them And he said unto the king of Israel Smite upon the ground and he smote thrice and stayed 19 And the man of God was wroth with him and said Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice 20 ¶ And Elisha died and they buried him and the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year 21 And it came to pass as they were burying a man that behold they spied a band of men and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha and when the man †Heb. went down was let down and touched the bones of Elisha * Ecclus 48.14 he revived and stood up on his feet 22 ¶ But Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz 23 And the LORD was gracious unto them and had compassion on them and had respect unto them because of his covenant with Abraham Isaac and Jacob and would not destroy them neither cast he them from his †Heb. fâ—â—t presence as yet 24 So Hazael king of Syria died and Ben-hadad his son reigned in his stead 25 And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz †Heb. râ—turned and took took again out of the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war three times did Joash beat him and recovered the cities of Israel CHAP. Whereupon the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves and they said The LORD is righteous 7 And when the LORD saw that they humbled themselves the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah saying They have humbled themselves therefore I will not destroy them but I will grant them ‖ Or a little wâ—ile some deliverance and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak 8 Nevertheless they shall be his servants that they may know my service and the service of the kingdoms of the countreys 9 So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem and took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the kings house he took all he carried away also the shields of gold which Solomon had * Chap. â— 15 made 10 In stead of which king Rehoboam made shields of brass and committed them to the hands of the chief of the guard that kept the entrance of the kings house 11 And when the king entred into the house of the LORD the guard came and fet them and brought them again into the guard-chamber 12 And when he humbled himself the wrath of the LORD turned from him that he would not destroy him altogether ‖ Or and yet â—is Judah there were good things and also in Judah things went well 13 ¶ So king Rehoboam strengthned himself in Jerusalem and reigned for * 1 Kin. 14.21 Rehoboam was one and fourty years old when he began to reign and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem the city which the LORD had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there and his mothers name was Naamah an Ammonitess 14 And he did evil because he ‖ Or fixed prepared not his heart to seek the LORD 15 Now the acts of Rehoboam first and last are they not written in the †Heb. words book of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer concerning genealogies And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually 16 And Rehoboam slept with his fathers and was buried in the city of David and Abijah his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XIII 1 Abijah succeeding maketh war against Jeroboam 4 He declareth the right of his cause 13 Trusting in God he overcometh Jeroboam 21 The wives and children of Abijah NOw * 1 Kin. 15.1 c. in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam began Abijah to reign over Judah 2 He reigned three years in Jerusalem his mothers name also was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah and there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam 3 And Abijah †Heb. bound together set the battel in aray with an army of valiant men of war even four hundred thousand chosen men Jeroboam also set the battel in aray against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men being mighty men of valour 4 ¶ And Abijah stood up upon mount Zemaraim which is in mount Ephraim and said Hear me thou Jeroboam and all Israel 5 Ought you not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt 6 Yet Jeroboam the son of Nebat the servant of Solomon the son of David is risen up and hath * 1 Kin. 11.26 rebelled against his lord 7 And there are gathered unto him vain men the children of Belial and have strengthned themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon when Rehoboam was young and tender-hearted and could not withstand them 8 And now ye think to withstand the kingdom of the LORD in the hand of the sons of David and ye be a great multitude and there are with you golden calves which Jeroboam * 1 Kin. 12.28 made you for gods 9 * Ch. 11.14 Have ye not cast out the priests of the LORD the sons of Aaron and the Levites and have made you priests after the manner of the nations of other lands so that whosoever cometh †Heb. to fill his hand to consecrate himself with a young bullock and seven rams the same may be a priest of them that are no gods 10 But as for us the LORD is our God and we have not forsaken him and the priests which minister unto the LORD are the sons of Aaron and the Levites wait upon their business 11 * Ch. 2.4 And they burn unto the LORD every morning and every evening burnt-sacrifices and sweet incense the * Lev. 24.6 shew-bread also set they in order upon the pure table and the candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof to burn every evening for we keep the charge of the LORD our God but ye have forsaken him 12 And behold God himself is with us for our captain and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you O children of Israel fight ye not against the LORD God of your fathers for you shall not prosper 13 ¶ But Jeroboam caused an ambushment to come about behinde them so they were before Judah the ambushment was behinde them 14 And when Judah looked back behold the battel was before and behinde and they cried unto the LORD and the priests sounded with the trumpets 15 Then the men of Judah gave a shout and as the men of Judah shouted it came to pass that God smote Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah 16 And the children of Israel fled before Judah and God delivered them into their hand 17 And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men 18 Thus the children of Israel were brought under at that time and the children of Judah prevailed because they relied upon the LORD God of their fathers 19 And Abijah pursued after Jeroboam and took cities from him Beth-el with the towns thereof and Jeshanah with the towns thereof and Ephrain with the towns thereof 20 Neither did Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of Abijah and the LORD strook him and he died 21 ¶ But Abijah waxed mighty and married fourteen wives and begat twenty and two sons and sixteen daughters 22 And the rest of the acts of Abijah and his ways and his sayings are written in the ‖ Or commentary story of the prophet * Ch. 12.15 Iddo CHAP. XIV 1 Asa succeeding destroyeth idolatry 6 Having peace he strengthneth his kingdom with forts and armies 9 Calling on God he overthroweth Zerah and spoileth the Ethiopians SO Abijah slept with his fathers and they buried him in the city of David and * 1 Kin. 15.8 c. Asa his son reigned in his stead in his days the land was quiet ten years 2 And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God 3 For he took away the altars of the strange gods and the high places and brake down the †Heb. statues images and cut down the groves 4 And
of their account by the hand of Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the ruler under the hand of Hananiah one of the kings captains 12 The whose number of the chief of the fathers of the mighty men of valour were two thousand and six hundred 13 And under their hand was †Heb. the power of an army an army three hundred thousand and seven thousand and five hundred that made war with mighty power to help the king against the enemy 14 And Uzziah prepared for them throughout all the host shields and spears and helmets and habergeons and bowes and †Heb. stones of 〈◊〉 slings to cast stones 15 And he made in Jerusalem engines invented by cunning men to be on the towers and upon the bulwarks to shoot arrows and great stones withal and his name †Heb. went forth spread far abroad for he was marvellously helped till he was strong 16 ‖ But when he was strong his heart was lifted up to bis destruction for he transgressed against the LORD his God and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense up on the altar of the incense 17 And Azariah the priest went in after him and with him fourscore priests of the LORD that were valiant men 18 And they withstood Uzziah the King and said unto him It * Num 18.7 appertaineth not unto thee Uzziah to burn incense unto the LORD but to the * Exod 30.7 priests the sons of Aaron that are consecrated to to burn incense go out of the sanctuary for thou hast trespassed neither shall it be for thine honour from the LORD God 19 Then Uzziah was wroth and had a censer in his hand to burn incense and while he was wroth with the priests the leprosie even rose up in his forehead before the priests in the house of the LORD from beside the incense-altar 20 And Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked upon him and behold he was leprous in his forehead and they thrust him out from thence yea himself * As Efth. 6.12 hasted also to go out because the LORD had smitten him 21 * 2 Kin 15.5 And Uzziah the king was a leper unto the day of his death and dwelt in a * Levit. 13.46 †Heb. free several house being a leper for he was cut off from the house of the LORD and Jotham his son was over the kings house judging the people of the land 22 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah first and last did Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz write 23 So Uzziah slept with his fathers and they buried him with his fathers in the field of the burial which belonged to the kings for they said He is a leper and Jotham his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XXVII 1 Jotham reigning well prospereth 5 He subdueth the Ammonites 7 His reign 9 Ahaz succeedeth him JOtham * 2 Kin. 15.32 c was twenty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem his mothers name also was Jerushah the daughter of Zadok 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father Uzziah did howbeit he entred not into the temple of the LORD And the people did yet corruptly 3 He built the high gate of the house of the LORD and on the wall of ‖ Or the tower Ophel he built much 4 Moreover he built cities in the mountains of Judah and in the forests he built castles and towers 5 ¶ He fought also with the king of the Ammonites and prevailed against them And the children of Ammon gave him the same year an hundred talents of silver and ten thousand measures of wheat and ten thousand of barley †Heb. this So much did the children of Ammon pay unto him both the second year and the third 6 So Jotham became mighty because he ‖ Oâ— â—stâ—blisâ—â—d prepared his ways before the LORD his God 7 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jotham and all his wars and his ways lo they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah 8 He was five and twenty years old when he began to reign and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem 9 ¶ And Jotham slept with his fathers and they buried him in the city of David and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XXVIII 1 Ahaz reigning very wickedly it greatly afflicted by the Syrians 6 Judah being captivated by the Israelites is sent home by the counsel of Oded the prophet 16 Ahaz sending for aid to Assyria is not helped thereby 22 In his dâ—stress he groweth more idolatrous 26 He dying Hezekiah succeedeth him AHaz * 1 King 16.2 was twenty years old when he began to reign and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem but he did not that which was right in the sight of the LORD like David his father 2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel and made also molten images for Baalim 3 Moreover he ‖ Or offered sacrifice burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom and burnt * Levâ—t 18.21 his children in the fire after the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel 4 He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the high places and on the hills and under every green tree 5 Wherefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria and they smote him and carried away a great multitude of them captives and brought them to †Heb Daâ—mâ—sâ—k Damascus and he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel who smote him with a great slaughter 6 ¶ For Pekih the son of Remaliah slew in Judah an hundred and twenty thousand in one day which were all †Heb. sons of velour valiant men because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers 7 And Zichri a mighty man of Ephraim slew Maaseiah the kings son and Azrikam the governour of the house and Elkanah that was †Heb. the second â—o the king next to the king 8 And the children of Israel carried away captive of their brethren two hundred thousand women sons and daughters and took also away much spoil from them and brought the spoil to Samaria 9 But a prophet of the LORD was there whose name was Oded and he went out before the host that came to Samaria and said unto them Behold because the LORD God of your fathers was wroth with Judah he hath delivered them into your hand and ye have slain them in a rage that reacheth up unto heaven 10 And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for bond-men and bond-women unto you but are there not with you even with you sins against the LORD your God 11 Now hear me therefore and deliver the captives again which ye have taken captive of your
waters to run down like rivers 17 And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the most Hâ—gh in the wilderness 18 And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust 19 * Numb 11.4 Yea they spake against God they said Can God †Heb. order furnish a table in the wilderness 20 * Ex. 17.6 Numb 20.11 Behold he smote the rock that the waters gushed out and the streams over-flowed can he give bread also can he provide flesh for his people 21 Therefore the LORD heard this and was wroth so a fire was kindled against Jacob and anger also came up against Israel 22 Because they beleeved not in God and trusted not in his salvation 23 Though he had commanded the clouds from above and opened the doors of heaven 24 * Ex. â—6 14. XII 1 Jerusalem a cup of trembling to her self 3 and a burdensom stone to her adversaries 6 The victorious restoring of Judah 9 The repentance of Jerusalem THe burden of the word of the LORD for Israel saith the LORD which stretcheth forth the heavens and layeth the foundation of the earth and formeth the spirit of man within him 2 Behold I will make Jerusalem a cup of ‖ Or stumber or poison trembling unto all the people round about ‖ Or and also against Judah shall he be which shall be in siege against Jerusalem when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem 3 ¶ And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensom stone for all people all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it 4 In that day saith the LORD I will smite every horse with astonishment and his rider with madness and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah and will smite every horse of the people with blindness 5 And the governours of Judah shall say in their heart ‖ Or There is strength to me and to the inhabitants c. The inhabitants of Jerusalem shall be my strength in the LORD of hosts their God 6 ¶ In that day will I make the governours of Judah like a hearth of fire among the wood and like a torch of fire in a sheaf and they shall devour all the people round about on the right hand and on the left and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place even in Jerusalem 7 The LORD also shall save the tents of Judah first that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnifie themselves against Judah 8 In that day shall the LORD defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem and he that is ‖ Or object †Heb. faln feeble among them at that day shall be as David and the house of David shall be as God as the angel of the LORD before them 9 ¶ And it shall come to pass in that day that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem 10 And I will pour upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem the spirit of grace and of supplications and they shall * Joh. 19.24 37. XIII 1 The fountain of purgation for Jerusalem 2 from idolatry and false prophesie 7 The death of Christ and the trial of a third part IN that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for †Heb. separation for uncleanness uncleanness 2 ¶ And it shall come to pass in that day saith the LORD of hosts that I will * Ezek. 30.13 cut off the names of the idols out of the land and they shall no more be remembred and also I will cause the prophets and the unclean spirit to pass out of the land 3 And it shall come to pass that when any shall yet prophesie then his father and his mother that begat him shall say unto him Thou shalt not live for thou speakest lies in the name of the LORD and his father and his mother that begat him shall thrust him through when he prophesieth 4 And it shall come to pass in that day that the prophets shall be ashamed every one of his vision when he hath prophesied neither shall they wear †Heb. a garment of hair a rough garment †Heb. to lie to deceive 5 But he shall say I am no prophet I am an husbandman for man taught me to keep cattel from my youth 6 And one shall say unto him What are these wounds in thine hands Then he shall answer Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends 7 ¶ Awake O sword against my shepherd and against the man that is my fellow saith the LORD of hosts * Matth. 26.31 Mar. 14.27 smite the shepherd and the sheep shall be scattered and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones 8 And it shall come to pass that in all the land saith the LORD two parts therein shall be cut off and die but the third shall be left therein 9 And I will bring the third part through the fire and will * 1 Pet. 1 6 7. refine them as silver is refined and will try them as gold is tried they shall call on my name and I will hear them I will say It is my people and they shall say The LORD is my God CHAP. XIV 1 The destroyers of Jerusalem destroyed 4 The coming of Christ and the graces of his kingdom 12 The plague of Jerusalems enemies 16 The remnant shall turn to the Lord 20 and their spoils shall be holy BEhold the day of the LORD cometh and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee 2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battel and the city shall be taken and the houses rifled and the women ravished and half of the city shall go forth into captivity and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city 3 Then shall the
words surely if thou do as thou hast spoken thy God shall be my God and thou shalt dwell in the house of king Nabuchodonosor and shalt be renowned through the whole earth CHAP. XII 2 Judith will not â—at of Holofernes meat 7 She tarried three days in the camp and every night went forth to pray 13 Bagoas moveth her to be merry with Holofernes 20 who for joy of her company drunk much THen he commanded to bring her in where his plate was set and bade that they should prepare for her of his own meats and that she should drink of his own wine 2 And Judith said I * Gen. 43.32 Dan. 1.8 Tob. 1.11 will not eat thereof lest there be an offence but provision shall be made for me of the things that I have brought 3 Then Holofernes said unto her If thy provision should fail how should we give thee the like for there be none with us of thy nation 4 Then said Judith unto him As thy soul liveth my lord thine hand-maid shall not spend those things that I have before the Lord work by mine hand the things that he hath determined 5 Then the servants of Holofernes brought her into the tent and she slept till midnight and she arose when it was towards the morning watch 6 And sent to Holofernes saying Let my Lord now command that thine hand maid may go forth unto prayer 7 Then Holofernes commanded his guard that they should not stay her thus she abode in the camp three days and went out in the night into the valley of Bethulia and washed her self in a fountain of water by the camp 8 And when she came out she besought the Lord God of Israel to direct her way to the raising up of the children of her people 9 So she came in clean and remained in the lent until she did eat her meat at evening 10 And in the fourth day Holofernes made a feast to his own servants onely and called none of the officers to the banquet 11 Then said he to Bagoas the eunuch who had charge over all that he had Go now and perswade this Hebrew woman which is with thee that she come unto us and eat and drink with us 12 For lo it will be a shame for our person if we shall let such a woman go not having had her company for if we draw her not unto us she will laugh us to scorn 13 Then went Bagoas from the presence of Holofernes and came to her and he said Let not this fair damsel fear to come to my lord and to be honoured in his presence and drink wine and be merry with uâ— and be made this day as one of the daughters of the Assyrians which serve in the house of Nabuchodonosor 14 Then said Judith unto him Who am I now that I should gainsay my lord surely whatsoever pleaseth him I will do speedily and it shall be my joy unto the day of my death 15 So she arose and decked her self with her apparel and all her womans attire and her maid went and laid soft skins on the ground for her over against Holofernes which she had received of Bagoas for her daily use that she might sit and eat uâ—on them 16 Now when Judith came in and sat down Holofernes his heart was ravished with her and his minde was moved and he desired greatly her company for he waited a time to deceive her from the day that he had seen her 17 Then said Holofernes unto her Drink now and be merry with us 18 So Judith said I will drink now my lord because my life is magnified in me this day more then all the days since I was borâ— 19 Then she took and ate and drank before him what her maid had prepared 20 And Holofernes took great delight in her and drank much more wine then he had drunk at any time in one day since he was bâ—rn CHAP. XIII 2 Judith is left alone with Holofernes in his tent 4 She prayeth God to give her strength 7 She cut off his head while he slept 10 and returned with it to Bethulia 17 They saw it and commend her NOw when the evening was come his servants made haste to depart and Bagoas shut his tent without and dismissed the waiters from the presence of his lord and they went to their beds for they were all weary because the feast had been long 2 And Judith was left alone in the tent and Holofernes lying along upon his bed for he was filled with * Eccluâ— 31.20 25 wine 3 Now Judith had commanded her maid to stand without her bed-chamber and to wait for her coming forth as she did daily for she said she would go forth to her prayers and she spake to Bagoas according to the same purpose 4 So all went forth and none was left in the bed-chamber neither little nor great Then Judith standing by his bed said in her heart O Lord God of all power look at this present upon the works of mine hands for the exaltation of Jerusalem 5 For now is the time to help thine inheritance and to execute mine enterprises to the destruction of the enemies which are risen against us 6 Then she came to the pillar of the bed which was at Holofernes head and took down his fauchion from thence 7 And approached to his bed and took hold of the hair of his head and said Strengthen me O Lord God of Israel this day 8 And she smote twice upon his neck with all her might and she took away his head from him 9 And tumbled his body down from the bed and pulled down the canopy from the pillars and anon after she went forth and gave Holofernes his head to her maid 10 And she put it in her bag of meat so they twain went together according to their custom unto prayer and when they passed the camp they compassed the valley and went up the mountain of Bethulia and came to the gates thereof 11 Then said Judith afar off to the watchmen at the gate Open open now the gate God even our God is with us to shew his power yet in Jerusalem and his forces against the enemy as he hath even done this day 12 Now when the men of her city heard her voice they made haste to go down to the gate of their city and they called the elders of the city 13 And then they ran all together both small and great for it was strange unto them that she was come so they opened the gate and received them and made a fire for a light and stood round about them 14 Then she said to them with a loud voice Praise praise God praise God I say for he hath not taken away his mercy from the house of Israel but hath destroyed our enemies by mine hands this night 15 So she took the head out of the bag and shewed it and said unto them Behold the head of Holofernes the chief captain of
one accord and said unto her Thou art the exaltation of Jerusalem thou art the great glory of Israel thou art the great rejoycing of our nation 10 Thou hast done all these thingâ— by thine hand thou hast done much good to Israel and God is pleased therewith blessed be thou of the Almighty Lord for evermore and all the people said So be it 11 And the people spoiled the camp the space of thirty days and they gave unto Judith Holofernes his tent and all his plate and beds and vessels and all his stuff and she took it and laid it on her mule and made ready her carts and laid them thereon 12 Then all the women of Israel ran together to see her and blessed her and made a dance among them for her and she took branches in her hand and gave also to the women that were with her 13 And they put a garland of olive upon her and her maid that was with her and she went before all the people in the dance leading all the women and all the men of Israel followed in their armour with garlands and with longs in their mouths CHAP. XVI 6 The song of Judith 19 She dedicateth the stuff of Holofernes 23 She died at Bethullas a widow of great honour 24 All Israel did lament her death THen Judith began to sing this thanksgiving in all Israel and all the people sang after her ‖ Or. this prâ—ising this song of praise 2 And Judith said Begin unto my God with timbrels sing unto my Lord with cymbals tune unto him a ‖ Or. Psalm and praise new psalm exalt him and call upon his name 3 For God breaketh the battels for amongst the camps in the midst of the people he hath delivered me out of the hands of them that persecuted me 4 Assur came out of the mountains from the north he came with ten thousands of his army the * Chap. 2.19 multitude whereof stopped the torrents and their hors-men have covered the hills 5 He bragged that he would burn up my borders and kill my young men with the sword and dash the sucking children against the ground and make mine infants as a prey and my virgins as a spoil 6 But the Almighty Lord hath disappointed them by the hand of a woman 7 For the mighty one did not fall by the young men neither did the sons of the Titans smite him nor high giants set upon him but Judith the daughter of Merari weakned him with the beauty of her countenance 8 For she put off the garment of her widowhood for the exaltation of those that were oppressed in Israel and anointed her face with ointment and bound her hair in a †Gr. mitrâ— tire and took a linen garment to deceive him 9 Her sandals ravished his eyes her beauty took his minde prisoner and the fauchion passed through his neck 10 The Perlians quaked at her boldness and the Medes were ‖ Or confounded daunted at her hardiness 11 Then my afflicted shouted for joy and my weak ones cried aloud but ‖ the Assyrians they were astonished these lifted up their voices but they were overthrown 12 The sons of the damsels have pierced them through and wounded them as fugitives children they perished by the battel of the Lord. 13 I will sing unto the Lord ‖ Or a song of praise a new song O Lord thou art great and glorious wonderful in strength and invincible 14 Let all creatures serve thee for thou spakest and they were made thou didst send forth thy spirit and it created them and there is none that can resist thy voice 15 For the mountains shall be moved from their foundations with the waters the rocks shall melt as wax at thy presence yet thou art merciful to them that fear thee 16 For all sacrifice is too little for a sweet savour unto thee and all the fat is not sufficient for thy burnt-offering but he that feareth the Lord is great at all times 17 Wo to the nations that rise up against my kindred the Lord Almighty will take vengeance of them in the day of judgement in putting fire and worms in their flesh and they shall feel them and weep for ever 18 Now assoon as they entred into Jerusalem they worshipped the Lord and assoon as the people were purified they offered their burnt-offerings and their free-offerings and their gifts 19 Judith also dedicated all the stuff of Holofernes which the people had given her and gave the canopy which she had taken out of his bed-chamber for a gift unto the Lord. 20 So the people continued feasting in Jerusalem before the sanctuary for the space of three moneths and Judith remained with them 21 After this time every one returned to his own inheritance and Judith went to Bethulia and remained in her own possession and was in her time honourable in all the countrey 22 And many desired her but none knew her all the days of her life after that Manasses her husband was dead and was gathered to his people 23 But she increased more and more in honour and waxed old in her husbands house being an hundred and five years old and made her maid free so she died in Bethulia and they buried her in the ‖ Or sepulebre cave of her husband Manasses 24 And the house of Israel lamented her * Gen. 50.10 seven days and before she died she did distribute her goods to all them that were nearest of kindred to Manasses her husband and to them that were the nearest of her kindred 25 And there was none that made the children of Israel any more afraid in the days of Judith nor a long time after her death ¶ The rest of the chapters of the book of ESTHER which are found neither in the Hebrew nor in the Caldee Part of the tenth Chapter after the Greek 5 Mardotheus remembreth and expoundeth his dream of the river and the two draâ—ons THen Mardocheus said God hath done these things 5 For I remember a dream which I saw concerning these matters and nothing thereof hath failed 6 A little fountain became a river and there was light and the sun and much water this river is Esther whom the king married and made queen 7 And the two dragons are I and Aman. 8 And the nations were those that were assembled to destroy the name of the Jews 9 And my nation is this Israel which cried to God and were saved for the Lord hath saved his people and the Lord hath delivered us from all those evils and God hath wrought signs and great wonders which have not been done among the Gentiles 10 Therefore hath he made two lots one for the people of God and another for all the Gentileâ— 11 And these two lots came at the hour and time and day of Judgement before God amongst all nations 12 So God remembred his people and justified his inheritance 13 Therefore those days shall be unto them in

XII 2 God did not destroy those of Chanaan all at once 12 If he had done so who could control him 19 But by sparing them be taught us 27 They were punished with their gods FOr thine uncorruptible Spirit is in all things 2 Therefore chastnest thou them by little and little that offend and warnest them by putting them in remembrance wherein they have offended that leaving their wickedness they may beleeve on thee O Lord. 3 For it was thy will to destroy by the hands of our fathers both those ‖ Or ancient old inhabitants of thy holy land 4 Whom thou hatedst for doing most odious works of ‖ Or sorceries witchcrafts and wicked sacrifices 5 And also those merciless murderers of children and devourers of mans flesh and the feasts of bloud 6 With their priests out of the midst of their idolatrous crue and the parents that killed with their own
temple 3 In his days the * 1 King 7.23 cistern to receive water being in compass as the sea was covered with plates of brass 4 He took care of the temple that it should not fall and fortified the city against besieging 5 How was he honoured in the midst of the people in his coming out of †Gr. the house of the â—â—il the sanctuary 6 He was as the morning star in the midst of a cloud and as the moon at the full 7 As the sun shining upon the temple of the most High and as the rainbowe giving light in the bright clouds 8 And as the flower of roses in the spring of the year as lilies by the rivers of waters and as the branches of the frankincense tree in the time of summer 9 As fire and incense in the censer and as a vessel of beaten gold set with all manner of precious stones 10 And as a fair olive-tree budding forth fruit and as a cypress tree which groweth up to the clouds 11 When he put on the robe of honour and was clothed with the perfection of glory when he went up to the holy altar he made the garment of holiness honourable 12 When he took the portions out of the priests hands he himself stood by the hearth of the altar compassed with his brethren round about as a young cedar in Libanus and as palm-trees compassed they him round about 13 So were all the sons of Aaron in their glory and the oblations of the Lord in their hands before all the congregation of Israel 14 And finishing the service at the altar that he might adorn the offering of the most high Almighty 15 He stretched out his hand to the cup and poured of the bloud of the grape he poured out at the foot of the altar a sweet-smelling savour unto the most high King of all 16 Then shouted the sons of Aaron and sounded the ‖ Or trumpets beacon forth with the 〈◊〉 silver trumpets and made a great noise to be heard for a remembrance before the most High 17 Then all the people together hasted and fell down to the earth upon their faces to worship their Lord God almighty the most High 18 The singers also sang praises with their voices with great variety of sounds was there made sweet melody 19 And the people besought the Lord the most High by prayer before him that is merciful till the solemnity of the Lord was ended and they had finished his service 20 Then he went down and lifted up his hands over the whose congregation of the children of Israel to give the blessing of the Lord with his lips and to rejoyce in his name 21 And they bowed themselves down to worship the second time that they might receive a blessing from the most High 22 Now therefore bless ye the God of all which onely doth wondrous things every where which exalteth our days from the womb and dealeth with us according to his mercy 23 He grant us joyfulness of heart and that peace may be in our days in Israel for ever 24 That he would confirm his mercy with us and deliver us at his time 25 There be two manner of nations which my heart abhorreth and the third is no nation 26 They that sit upon the mountain of Samaria and they that dwell amongst the Philistines and that foolish people that dwell in Sichem 27 Jesus the son of Sirach of Jerusalem hath written in this book the instruction of understanding and knowledge who out of his heart poured forth wisdom 28 Blessed is he that shall be exercised in these things and he that sayeth them up in his heart shall become wise 20 For if he do them he shall be strong to all things for the light of the Lord leadeth him who giveth wisdom to the godly Blesses be the Lord forever Amen amen CHAP. LI. ¶ A prayer of Jesus the son of Sirach I Will thank thee O Lord and King and praise thee O God my Saviour I do give praise unto thy name 2 For thou art my defender and helper and hast preserved my body from destruction and from the snare of the slandrous tongue and from the lips that forge lies and hast been mine helper against mine adversaries 3 And hast delivered me according to the multitude of thy mercies and greatness of thy name from †Gr. the gnashing of the teeth the teeth of them that were ready to devour me and out of the hands of such as sought after my life and from the manifold afflictions which I had 4 From the choking of fire on every side and from the mids of the fire which I kindled not 5 From the depth of the besly of hell from an unclean tongue and from sying words 6 By an accusation to the king from an unrighteous tongue my soul drew near even unto death my life was near to the hell beneath 7 They compassed me on every side and there was no man to help me I looked for the succour of men but there was none 8 Then thought I upon thy mercy O Lord and upon thy acts of old how thou deliverest such as wait for thee and savest them out of the hands of the enemies 9 Then lifted I up my supplication from the earth and prayed for deliverance from death 10 I called upon the Lord the Father of my Lord that he would not leave me in the days of my trouble and in the time of the proud when there was no help 11 I will praise thy name continually and will sing praise with thanksgiving and so my prayer was heard 12 For thou savedst me from destruction and deliveredst me from the evil time therefore will I give thanks and praise thee and bless thy name O Lord. 13 When I was yet young or ever I ‖ Or went astray went abroad I desired wisdom openly in my prayer 14 I prayed for her before the temple and will seek here out even to the end 15 Even from the flower till the grape was ripe hath my heart delighted in her my foot went the right way from my youth up sought I after her 16 I howed down mine ear a little and received her and gat much learning 17 I profited therein therefore will I ascribe the glory unto him that giveth me wisdom 18 For I purposed to do after her and earnestly I followed that which is good so shall I not be confounded 19 My soul hath wrestled with her and in my doings I was exact I stretched forth my hands to the heaven above and bewailed my ignorances of her 20 ‖ Or I got understanding I directed my soul unto her and I found her in pureness I have had my heart joyned with her from the beginning therefore shall I not be forsaken 21 My ‖ Or bowâ—lâ— heart was troubled in seeking her therefore have I gotten a good possession 22 The Lord hath given me a tongue for my reward and I will

like manner unto the Jews that dwelt among them 9 He came upon the Jamnites also by night and set fire on the haven and the navy so that the light of the fire was seen at Jerusalem two hundred and fourty furlongs off 10 Now when they were gone from thence nine furlongs in their journey toward Timotheus no fewer then five thousand men on foot and five hundred hors men of the Arabians set upon him 11 Whereupon there was a very sore battel but Judas side by the help of God got the victory so that the Nomades of Arabia being overcome besought Judas for peace promising both to give him cattel and to pleasure him otherwise 12 Then Judas thinking indeed that they would be profitable in many things granted them peace whereupon they shook hands and so they ‖ Or went from place to place with their families and cattel departed to their tents 13 He went also about to make a bridge to a certain strong city which was tended about with walls and inhabited by people of divers countreys and the name of it was Caspis 14 But they that were within it put such trust in the strength of the walls and provision of victuals that they behaved themselves rudely towards them that were with Judas railing and blaspheming and uttering such words as were not to be spoken 15 Wherefore Judas with his company calling upon the great Lord of the world who without any rams of engines of war did cast down Jericho in the time of Joshua gave a fierce assault against the walls 16 And took the city by the will of God and made unspeakable daughters insomuch that a lake two furlongs broad near adjoyning thereunto being silled full was seen running with bloud 17 Then departed they from thence seven hundred and fifty furlongs and came to Characa unto the Jews that are called Tubieni 18 But as for Timotheus they found him not in the places for before he had dispatched any thing he departed from thence having left a very strong garison in a certain hold 19 Howbeit Dositheus and Sosipater who were of Maccabeus captains went forth and slew those that Timotheus had left in the fortress above ten thousand men 20 And Maccabeus ranged his army by bands and set ‖ Dositheus and Sosipater them over the baâ—ds went against Timotheus who had about him an hundred and twenty thousand men of foot two thousand five hundred hors-men 21 Now when Timotheus had knowledge of Judas coming he sent the women and children and the other baggage unto a fortress called Carnion for the town was hard to besiege and uneasie to come unto by reason of the straitness of all the places 22 But when Judas his first band came in sight the enemies being smitten with fear and terrour through the appearing of him that seeth all things fled amain one running this way another that way so as that they were often hurt of their own men and wounded with the points of their own swords 23 Judas also was very earnest in pursuing them killing those wicked wretches of whom he slew about thirty thousand men 24 Moreover Timotheus himself fell into the hands of Dositheus and Soâ—ipater whom he besought with much craft to let him go with his life because he had many of the Jews parents and the brethren of some of them who it they had put him to death should not be regarded 25 So when he had assured them with many words that he would restore them without hurt according to the agreement they let him go for the saving of their brethren 26 Then Maccabeus marched forth to Carnion and to the temple of ‖ That is Venus Atargatis and there he slew five and twenty thousand persons 27 And after he had put to flight and destroyed them Judas removed the host towards Ephron a strong city wherein Lysias abode and a great multitude of divers nations and the strong young men kept the walls and defended them mightily wherein also was great provision of engines and darts 28 But when Judas and his company had called upon almighty God who with his power breaketh the strength of his enemies they wall the city and slew twenty and five thousand of them that were within 29 From thence they departed to Sâ—ythopolis which lieth six hundred furlongs from Jerusalem 30 But when the Jews that dwelt there had testified that the Scythopolitans dealt lovingly with them and entreated them kindly in the time of their adversity 31 They gave them thanks desiring them to be friendly still unto them so they came to Jerusalem the feast of that weeks approaching 32 And after the feast called Pentecost they went forth against Gorgias the governour of Idumea 33 Who came out with three thousand men of foot and four hundred hors-men 34 And it hapned that in their fighting together a few of the Jews were slain 35 At which time Dositheus one of Bacenors company who was on hors-back and a strong man was still upon Gorgias and taking hold of his coat drew him by force and when he would have taken that cursed man alive a hors-man of Thracia coming upon him ‖ Or put by â—a â—rm or wounded him in the shoulder or strook him in the shoulder smote off his shoulder so that Gorgias sled unto Marisa 36 Now when they that were with Gorgias had fought long and were weary Judas called upon the Lord that he would shew himself to be their helper and leader of the battel 37 And with that he began in his own language and sung plasms with a loud voice and rushing unawares upon Gorgias men he put them to flight 38 So Judas gathered his host and came into the city Odollam And when the seventh day came they purified themselves as the custom was and kept the sabbath in the same place 39 And upon the day following ‖ Or at such time c. as the use had been Judas and his company came to take up the bodies of them that were slain and to bury them with their kinsmen in their
