god_n by_o his_o grace_n and_o spirit_n do_v work_v the_o to_o will_v and_o the_o to_o do_v yet_o do_v sin_n against_o he_o and_o that_o not_o mere_o of_o infirmity_n or_o for_o defect_n of_o his_o work_n but_o against_o and_o contrary_a to_o his_o work_n in_o they_o grieve_v and_o quench_v he_o that_o wrought_v in_o they_o isa_n 63_o 10._o as_o in_o the_o case_n of_o david_n sin_v the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o believer_n in_o this_o matter_n so_o as_o may_v be_v fit_o represent_v by_o the_o case_n of_o israel_n of_o old_a in_o respect_n of_o the_o canaanite_n when_o bring_v into_o canaan_n they_o have_v the_o present_a of_o god_n with_o they_o and_o such_o furniture_n of_o strength_n and_o defence_n afford_v they_o thereby_o so_o as_o they_o may_v have_v keep_v they_o under_o and_o it_o be_v their_o own_o great_a neglect_n of_o improve_n the_o advantage_n of_o god_n presence_n and_o help_n with_o they_o who_o subdue_v their_o enemy_n under_o they_o both_z giving_z they_o will_v and_o courage_n to_o fight_v they_o and_o in_o their_o fight_n efficacy_n of_o subdue_a they_o if_o they_o let_v or_o suffer_v they_o to_o reign_v over_o they_o as_o well_o as_o it_o be_v great_a imprudence_n in_o respect_n of_o themselves_o yet_o they_o may_v possible_o make_v league_n and_o confederate_a with_o they_o and_o so_o provoke_v god_n to_o withdraw_v from_o they_o and_o leave_v they_o to_o their_o power_n so_o as_o to_o become_v servant_n and_o tributary_n to_o they_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o believer_n god_n work_v in_o he_o the_o to_o will_v and_o the_o to_o do_v in_o his_o listen_n to_o he_o and_o in_o his_o strength_n and_o furniture_n of_o grace_n give_v he_o may_v mortify_v sin_n and_o not_o let_v it_o reign_v in_o his_o mortal_a body_n yet_o this_o grace_n do_v not_o work_v so_o compulsive_o and_o irresistible_o or_o so_o to_o enforce_v and_o work_v his_o obedience_n to_o it_o as_o that_o he_o can_v neglect_v it_o with_o man_n that_o they_o serve_v they_o be_v there_o not_o more_o power_n in_o god_n grace_n to_o help_v they_o against_o they_o then_o in_o their_o corruption_n to_o enslave_v they_o they_o will_v not_o be_v so_o obnoxious_a to_o or_o worthy_a of_o wrath_n from_o god_n but_o rather_o will_v be_v pity_v and_o help_v by_o he_o except_o where_o have_v put_v away_o more_o grace_n they_o be_v enslave_v again_o by_o their_o corruption_n god_n withdraw_v from_o they_o but_o if_o god_n so_o wrought_v in_o man_n their_o willing_n and_o do_n as_o in_o the_o conception_n at_o first_o mention_v there_o can_v be_v no_o possibility_n of_o any_o believer_n to_o fail_v of_o do_v god_n will_n but_o by_o god_n mere_a voluntary_a first-leaving_a he_o no_o possibility_n of_o let_v sin_n have_v dominion_n over_o they_o or_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n and_o so_o neither_o ground_n or_o need_v of_o any_o of_o these_o or_o the_o like_a exhortation_n sect_n 2._o how_o god_n work_v by_o exhortation_n and_o whether_o his_o work_n in_o man_n to_o will_n and_o to_o do_v be_v by_o and_o through_o the_o exhortation_n to_o â—k_v out_o their_o salvation_n object_n exception_n be_v hereunto_o make_v that_o though_o god_n work_v so_o as_o above_o to_o necessitate_v man_n working_n out_o too_o yet_o exhortation_n to_o work_v out_o our_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a trust_v not_o by_o exhort_v they_o mere_o to_o trust_v but_o by_o declare_v his_o name_n and_o cause_v they_o to_o know_v it_o and_o then_o when_o he_o have_v so_o principled_a they_o to_o work_v or_o walk_v etc._n etc._n he_o use_v to_o exhort_v man_n in_o that_o power_n and_o strength_n bring_v to_o they_o and_o give_v they_o to_o work_v or_o walk_v and_o act_v forth_o and_o by_o those_o exhortation_n further_o excite_v and_o stir_v up_o and_o put_v forward_o the_o will_n or_o the_o man_n to_o act_v in_o those_o capacity_n forgive_v and_o in_o such_o exhortation_n he_o work_v after_o the_o nature_n of_o divine_o moral_a work_n that_o be_v by_o present_v that_o to_o the_o understanding_n and_o judgement_n which_o afford_v rational_a ground_n for_o the_o willing_a and_o do_v what_o he_o exhorâ—â—o_o and_o therefore_o also_o usual_o before_o or_o however_o with_o those_o exhortation_n lay_v down_o those_o ground_n and_o add_v such_o motive_n which_o present_v to_o the_o understanding_n be_v as_o proper_a mean_n to_o convey_v motion_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o excite_v it_o to_o will_n and_o do_v what_o be_v exhort_v but_o now_o the_o ground_n or_o motive_n here_o use_v and_o present_v be_v such_o as_o be_v interpret_v and_o represent_v in_o the_o sense_n object_v destroy_v the_o exhortation_n and_o take_v away_o all_o the_o motive_n to_o it_o and_o ground_n thereof_o so_o as_o that_o the_o exhortation_n can_v be_v no_o mean_n to_o produce_v the_o thing_n exhort_v to_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o the_o ground_n and_o motive_n use_v to_o enforce_v it_o as_o so_o understand_v the_o exhortation_n be_v that_o they_o will_v be_v always_o obedient_a and_o now_o much_o more_o in_o the_o apostle_n absence_n work_v out_o their_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a which_o may_v indeed_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o excite_v and_o stir_v they_o up_o to_o such_o diligence_n and_o obedience_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a iâ—_n with_o all_o they_o be_v will_n and_o to_o do_v that_o he_o therein_o also_o work_v their_o work_n out_o complete_o and_o inavoidable_o so_o as_o to_o leave_v no_o room_n for_o or_o possibility_n of_o their_o disobedience_n to_o it_o they_o can_v not_o by_o that_o interpretation_n provoke_v he_o then_o be_v it_o not_o possible_a that_o they_o shall_v work_v out_o their_o salvation_n much_o less_o upon_o the_o ground_n propound_v by_o the_o apostle_n the_o truth_n thereof_o then_o fail_v and_o without_o that_o assert_v in_o the_o ground_n viz_o god_n work_v in_o they_o his_o exhortation_n will_v avail_v they_o nothing_o so_o that_o that_o interpretation_n render_v the_o exhortation_n needless_a both_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n and_o in_o respect_n of_o they_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n for_o he_o wrought_v so_o before_o and_o of_o good_a pleasure_n and_o therefore_o also_o in_o respect_n of_o they_o see_v he_o work_v their_o work_n out_o so_o as_o to_o effect_v infallible_o their_o whole_a operation_n they_o can_v not_o want_v any_o exciting_a thereunto_o 4._o yea_o if_o god_n so_o wrought_v in_o they_o by_o this_o exhortation_n the_o work_v out_o their_o salvation_n will_v not_o all_o the_o other_o exhortation_n be_v needless_a see_v all_o that_o they_o exhort_v to_o be_v include_v herein_o or_o how_o ever_o 5._o then_o must_v this_o and_o all_o other_o exhortation_n be_v obey_v necessary_o and_o no_o faultiness_n in_o believer_n for_o not_o work_v out_o their_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a unless_o that_o god_n first_o fail_v they_o be_v leave_v in_o a_o incapacity_n of_o so_o do_v which_o fail_v of_o his_o also_o consist_v not_o with_o that_o interpretation_n which_o be_v cross_v to_o the_o scripture_n as_o we_o have_v see_v these_o and_o other_o like_a reason_n may_v be_v urge_v against_o such_o a_o sense_n of_o the_o foresay_a say_n and_o against_o the_o objection_n of_o god_n so_o work_v by_o the_o exhortation_n let_v we_o see_v then_o how_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v it_o sect_n 3._o the_o aforesaid_a scripture_n viz._n philip._n 2.12_o brief_o open_v the_o apostle_n have_v after_o diverse_a exhortation_n as_o to_o let_v their_o conversation_n be_v such_o as_o become_v the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n to_o be_v like_o mind_a or_o to_o mind_v the_o same_o thing_n to_o have_v the_o same_o love_n to_o be_v of_o one_o accord_n and_o of_o one_o mind_n to_o do_v nothing_o out_o of_o strife_n and_o vain_a glory_n but_o in_o lowliness_n of_o mind_n to_o esteem_v each_o other_o above_o themselves_o not_o to_o mind_v their_o own_o commodity_n but_o each_o to_o mind_v the_o good_a of_o other_o etc._n etc._n to_o provoke_v they_o thereunto_o the_o more_o propound_v to_o they_o the_o example_n of_o christ_n his_o self_n abasement_n for_o our_o sake_n and_o the_o great_a glory_n he_o have_v thereupon_o receive_v of_o and_o with_o god_n afterward_o return_v again_o to_o exhort_v they_o further_o even_o in_o the_o consideration_n of_o christ_n suffering_n for_o they_o and_o the_o great_a honour_n &_o dignity_n that_o god_n have_v thereupon_o exalt_v he_o to_o make_v he_o lord_n of_o all_o as_o they_o have_v always_o obey_v not_o only_o in_o his_o presence_n with_o they_o but_o now_o much_o more_o in_o his_o absence_n to_o work_v out_o or_o accomplish_v their_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a press_v that_o exhortation_n further_o with_o this_o reason_n or_o motive_n which_o seem_v to_o have_v special_a respect_n to_o their_o work_n out_o with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a for_o it_o be_v god_n that_o work_v or_o god_n be_v the_o inworker_n or_o effectual_a worker_n in_o you_o both_o of_o the_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v of_o good_a pleasure_n or_o of_o his_o good_a pleasure_n to_o which_o he_o add_v do_v all_o thing_n without_o murmur_a and_o dispute_v etc._n etc._n so_o that_o those_o word_n for_o it_o be_v god_n etc._n etc._n be_v use_v as_o a_o motive_n and_o argument_n to_o enforce_v a_o exhortation_n give_v to_o believer_n who_o have_v already_o close_v with_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n wherewith_o he_o have_v prevent_v they_o which_o grace_n of_o god_n may_v also_o be_v understand_v by_o their_o salvation_n as_o sometime_o it_o be_v call_v in_o act._n 28.28_o and_o the_o word_n of_o it_o the_o word_n of_o salvation_n act._n 13.26_o ephes_n 1.13_o to_o be_v wrought_v out_o by_o they_o for_o that_o receive_v and_o believe_v in_o their_o heart_n be_v operative_a and_o be_v frame_v or_o work_v in_o their_o heart_n to_o frame_v they_o in_o heart_n and_o conversation_n unto_o god_n to_o which_o therefore_o he_o exhort_v they_o to_o yield_v themselves_o to_o work_v in_o its_o work_n both_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v so_o work_v out_o and_o finish_v what_o that_o effect_v and_o give_v they_o power_n and_o motion_n to_o in_o its_o operation_n and_o this_o with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a lest_o they_o shall_v by_o neglect_n or_o restraint_n of_o it_o grieve_v that_o good_a spirit_n of_o grace_n work_v by_o and_o in_o it_o or_o mix_v something_o of_o their_o own_o with_o it_o or_o work_v out_o their_o corruption_n with_o or_o instead_o of_o it_o and_o that_o upon_o this_o account_n because_o what_o the_o salvation_n or_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v work_v in_o man_n it_o be_v god_n that_o work_v it_o who_o be_v great_o to_o be_v fear_v and_o reverence_v and_o with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a to_o be_v obey_v and_o serve_v and_o the_o phrase_n it_o be_v god_n that_o work_v in_o you_o to_o will_v or_o to_o be_v willing_a as_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d be_v look_v upon_o otherwise_o than_o as_o necessitate_v by_o defect_n of_o grace_n on_o god_n part_n or_o by_o his_o providence_n order_v a_o temptation_n to_o he_o above_o his_o strength_n and_o against_o which_o he_o can_v not_o stand_v which_o will_v certain_o involve_v god_n as_o the_o necessary_a cause_n of_o his_o sin_v and_o much_o take_v off_o from_o the_o clear_a equity_n of_o his_o justice_n in_o so_o severe_o punish_v he_o and_o we_o in_o he_o but_o if_o we_o say_v such_o a_o man_n so_o suppose_v may_v by_o the_o same_o grace_n that_o adam_n have_v have_v stand_v aâ—_n adam_n also_o himself_o may_v than_o who_o iâ—_n that_o case_n have_v make_v the_o difference_n the_o one_o stand_v and_o the_o other_o fall_v have_v it_o not_o be_v mere_o adam_n abuse_v the_o grace_n give_v and_o listen_v to_o the_o tempter_n that_o shall_v have_v make_v himself_o differ_v both_o from_o the_o other_o and_o from_o what_o himself_o be_v before_o it_o seem_v clear_a to_o i_o too_o that_o man_n in_o the_o same_o state_n may_v act_v different_o and_o in_o their_o different_a act_v god_n may_v make_v the_o better_a actor_n differ_v in_o his_o state_n as_o of_o two_o man_n equal_o wound_v and_o equal_o every_o way_n assist_v and_o furnish_v and_o move_v to_o look_v to_o the_o brazen_a serpent_n the_o one_o may_v do_v better_a than_o the_o other_o as_o suppose_v by_o the_o same_o power_n that_o one_o abuse_v run_v from_o the_o brazen_a serpent_n the_o other_o yield_v to_o the_o same_o motive_n and_o motion_n afford_v to_o both_o may_v have_v look_v to_o it_o and_o then_o the_o brazen_a serpent_n or_o god_n in_o and_o by_o it_o may_v make_v the_o difference_n between_o they_o as_o to_o their_o state_n heal_v the_o looker_n to_o it_o when_o as_o the_o other_o run_v away_o be_v not_o heal_v without_o which_o heal_a act_n of_o god_n their_o different_a act_n have_v do_v nothing_o to_o the_o difference_v one_o from_o the_o other_o as_o to_o their_o condition_n sure_o it_o be_v better_o walk_v in_o god_n way_n than_o in_o our_o own_o for_o in_o god_n way_n we_o may_v expect_v to_o find_v god_n make_v we_o to_o differ_v both_o from_o ourselves_o and_o other_o that_o refuse_v his_o way_n to_o walk_v in_o their_o own_o though_o yet_o neither_o can_v we_o walk_v in_o god_n way_n the_o use_n of_o his_o mean_n in_o any_o right_a manner_n without_o his_o prevent_a grace_n enable_v aâ—d_a move_v we_o thereunto_o and_o his_o assist_a grace_n help_v we_o therein_o as_o for_o the_o other_o part_n of_o the_o collection_n that_o man_n receive_v from_o god_n their_o do_v better_a the_o scripture_n mention_v give_v no_o ground_n for_o it_o because_o it_o say_v not_o what_o do_v thou_o that_o thou_o have_v not_o receive_v though_o in_o a_o sound_a sense_n speak_v of_o good_a action_n it_o may_v be_v true_o so_o say_v according_a to_o that_o in_o the_o philippian_n before_o speak_v to_o it_o be_v god_n that_o work_v in_o you_o to_o will_n and_o to_o do_v the_o strength_n virtue_n power_n motive_n motion_n to_o do_v what_o be_v good_a and_o assistance_n in_o do_v it_o we_o have_v from_o god_n without_o which_o we_o can_v not_o do_v it_o yet_o so_o as_o it_o may_v be_v man_n voluntary_a unnecessitated_a act_n at_o least_o as_o to_o some_o kind_n of_o act_n as_o to_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n nor_o may_v such_o a_o voluntary_a act_n in_o the_o strength_n of_o god_n grace_n give_v he_o any_o ground_n of_o boast_v no_o more_o than_o a_o poor_a man_n have_v cause_n to_o boast_v that_o when_o a_o rich_a man_n offer_v he_o gold_n and_o move_v he_o to_o receive_v it_o yea_o take_v he_o by_o the_o lame_a dead_a hand_n and_o bring_v it_o to_o receive_v it_o he_o do_v not_o wilful_o pluck_v it_o from_o he_o or_o by_o some_o unworthy_a show_n of_o his_o reluctancy_n against_o he_o provoke_v he_o to_o let_v go_v his_o hand_n and_o so_o to_o deprive_v himself_o of_o the_o gift_n he_o give_v he_o or_o that_o after_o divers_a attempt_n to_o pluck_v away_o his_o hand_n yet_o at_o length_n through_o his_o persuasion_n yield_v it_o to_o he_o such_o a_o man_n may_v say_v he_o do_v better_a than_o another_o that_o throw_v it_o away_o or_o persist_v in_o his_o obstinacy_n so_o to_o do_v but_o no_o cause_n to_o boast_v of_o himself_o either_o that_o he_o have_v more_o than_o another_o that_o receive_v something_o as_o well_o as_o he_o what_o it_o please_v the_o same_o rich_a man_n to_o give_v he_o though_o not_o so_o much_o because_o he_o have_v his_o more_o not_o from_o his_o better_a act_n of_o receive_v but_o mere_o from_o the_o rich_a man_n gift_n who_o if_o he_o have_v please_v may_v have_v give_v he_o less_o and_o the_o other_o more_o which_o be_v the_o case_n the_o apostle_n there_o speak_v to_o or_o that_o he_o have_v what_o another_o throw_v away_o and_o may_v have_v have_v will_v he_o have_v receive_v it_o and_o not_o be_v so_o obstinate_a he_o may_v say_v he_o do_v better_a indeed_o and_o so_o he_o do_v and_o so_o do_v they_o that_o hear_v and_o learn_v of_o the_o father_n better_a than_o they_o who_o like_o the_o deaf_a adder_n stop_v their_o ear_n and_o will_v not_o hear_v but_o that_o he_o do_v it_o he_o may_v thank_v the_o donor_n who_o will_v have_v he_o accept_v his_o kindness_n and_o persuade_v he_o to_o it_o and_o that_o the_o other_o do_v not_o so_o â—e_z may_v fault_n himself_o and_o may_v worthy_o be_v fault_v both_o by_o the_o donor_n and_o by_o other_o that_o do_v better_a who_o also_o shall_v rise_v up_o in_o judgement_n with_o he_o and_o condemn_v he_o for_o that_o ofttimes_o with_o less_o persuasion_n and_o motive_n they_o do_v better_a than_o he_o that_o refuse_v to_o do_v well_o though_o upon_o more_o persuasion_n and_o strong_a motive_n as_o matth._n 12.40_o 41_o 42_o 43._o though_o yet_o that_o god_n may_v and_o do_v prevent_v some_o with_o more_o grace_n than_o other_o and_o more_o powerful_o than_o other_o yea_o more_o early_a and_o with_o more_o absoluteness_n of_o bring_v off_o from_o and_o draw_v over_o all_o opposition_n from_o they_o than_o other_o may_z for_o aught_o i_o perceive_v be_v true_a and_o true_o grant_v it_o be_v at_o least_o possible_a and_o probable_a god_n be_v at_o liberty_n to_o distribute_v the_o dispensation_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o gracious_a operation_n as_o he_o please_v yea_o i_o conceive_v we_o may_v see_v evident_a difference_n between_o his_o deal_n in_o that_o respect_n with_o jeremiah_n john_n the_o baptist_n paul_n and_o some_o other_o ordain_v by_o he_o to_o be_v choice_a instrument_n in_o his_o hand_n for_o other_o good_a and_o many_o other_o believer_n but_o though_o that_o be_v so_o yet_o that_o that_o be_v his_o ordinary_a constant_a manner_n of_o work_v in_o all_o that_o be_v prevail_v with_o to_o believe_v be_v not_o thereby_o prove_v or_o evidence_v much_o less_o do_v any_o of_o the_o scripture_n mention_v evince_v it_o sect_n 7._o 1_o cor._n 12.6_o consider_v and_o what_o some_o argue_v from_o that_o and_o therein_o whether_o sin_n be_v mere_o a_o privation_n last_o some_o from_o that_o say_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o 1_o cor._n 12.6_o that_o it_o be_v the_o same_o god_n that_o work_v all_o in_o all_o infer_v that_o god_n not_o only_o work_v and_o effect_v in_o man_n all_o their_o good_a action_n so_o as_o necessary_o to_o include_v and_o by_o way_n of_o necessitation_n to_o very_a work_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o the_o flesh_n in_o man_n say_v that_o all_o action_n even_o the_o action_n of_o sin_n too_o be_v wrought_v in_o man_n by_o god_n and_o so_o be_v of_o god_n which_o error_n in_o both_o branch_n of_o it_o they_o run_v into_o by_o run_v from_o the_o scope_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o the_o say_a chapter_n in_o which_o he_o be_v not_o speak_v of_o all_o creature_n much_o less_o of_o all_o the_o action_n of_o all_o creature_n but_o of_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o person_n whence_o the_o title_n of_o the_o chapter_n be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d
