that_o all_o man_n of_o any_o judgement_n exercise_v in_o those_o treatise_n may_v easy_o see_v both_o the_o one_o &_o the_o other_o yea_o many_o have_v see_v &_o do_v see_v both_o the_o one_o &_o the_o other_o notwithstanding_o as_o many_o have_v see_v &_o do_v see_v it_o so_o also_o satan_n the_o god_n of_o this_o world_n do_v still_o detain_v many_o in_o their_o former_a blindness_n and_o ignorance_n yea_o the_o near_a that_o his_o kingdom_n be_v to_o a_o end_n the_o more_o diligent_o he_o go_v about_o like_o a_o roar_a lion_n seek_v still_o who_o he_o may_v devour_v therefore_o he_o the_o more_o prevail_v partly_o because_o many_o have_v not_o ability_n to_o buy_v the_o book_n of_o particular_a controversy_n betwixt_o we_o and_o the_o papist_n they_o be_v some_o what_o costly_a partly_o because_o they_o have_v no_o leisure_n to_o read_v they_o be_v many_o and_o large_a and_o partly_o because_o they_o have_v no_o judgement_n to_o conceive_v of_o they_o be_v matter_n of_o learning_n and_o learned_o handle_v where_o he_o can_v effect_v that_o which_o he_o will_v for_o the_o harden_v of_o man_n in_o popery_n or_o draw_v they_o to_o popery_n there_o he_o go_v another_o way_n to_o work_v either_o corrupt_a they_o with_o some_o other_o heresy_n or_o make_v they_o altogether_o profane_a and_o work_v in_o they_o a_o contempt_n of_o all_o religion_n because_o all_o be_v one_o to_o he_o whether_o man_n be_v papist_n or_o other_o heretic_n or_o of_o no_o religion_n at_o all_o 2_o thus_o therefore_o see_v true_a religion_n every_o where_o to_o decay_v &_o the_o kingdom_n of_o satan_n more_o and_o more_o daily_a to_o be_v enlarge_v partly_o by_o popery_n partly_o by_o other_o heresy_n and_o partly_o by_o profaneness_n and_o contempt_n of_o all_o religion_n i_o have_v think_v good_a a_o other_o way_n to_o try_v the_o conversion_n both_o of_o the_o ignorant_a papist_n that_o be_v yet_o persuade_v their_o religion_n to_o be_v sound_a and_o true_a and_o that_o wherein_o they_o please_v god_n and_o also_o of_o other_o heretic_n and_o profane_a person_n themselves_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a and_o likewise_o the_o confirmation_n and_o strengthen_n of_o such_o as_o profess_v our_o religion_n in_o show_n be_v notwithstanding_o unstaied_a and_o waver_a and_o therefore_o ready_a to_o be_v draw_v any_o other_o way_n to_o all_o these_o therefore_o i_o do_v here_o offer_v these_o general_a argument_n follow_v in_o defence_n of_o our_o religion_n and_o against_o popery_n so_o brief_o and_o plain_o set_v down_o that_o even_o all_o that_o be_v not_o able_a to_o go_v to_o the_o price_n of_o book_n of_o particular_a controversy_n or_o that_o can_v intend_v the_o read_n of_o they_o to_o weigh_v and_o conceive_v they_o may_v yet_o general_o see_v the_o truth_n of_o our_o religion_n and_o the_o falsehood_n of_o popery_n and_o see_v these_o thing_n may_v likewise_o more_o serious_o consider_v of_o our_o religion_n and_o contrary_o of_o the_o most_o dangerous_a fearful_a and_o wretched_a estate_n of_o all_o papist_n and_o likewise_o of_o all_o other_o that_o be_v not_o as_o yet_o of_o our_o religion_n that_o so_o the_o one_o sort_n may_v not_o forsake_v our_o holy_a fellowship_n and_o the_o other_o may_v join_v with_o we_o and_o that_o both_o join_v together_o in_o one_o truth_n may_v zealous_o profess_v it_o bring_v forth_o plentiful_a fruit_n thereof_o neither_o will_v i_o have_v man_n whole_o to_o content_v themselves_o with_o these_o general_a reason_n neglect_v particular_a treatise_n of_o particular_a controversy_n but_o rather_o by_o this_o treatise_n to_o be_v the_o more_o encourage_v to_o the_o read_n of_o the_o other_o and_o to_o be_v make_v the_o fit_a and_o every_o way_n the_o more_o able_a to_o judge_v of_o they_o 3_o that_o all_o man_n may_v the_o better_o see_v my_o meaning_n in_o this_o whole_a treatise_n and_o know_v the_o state_n of_o the_o whole_a cause_n by_o our_o religion_n i_o do_v here_o understand_v the_o religion_n now_o establish_v &_o public_o by_o public_a authority_n profess_v in_o england_n and_o such_o other_o church_n as_o have_v just_o forsake_v rome_n and_o be_v in_o good_a measure_n well_o reform_v according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n contain_v in_o holy_a scripture_n to_o speak_v more_o plain_o i_o mean_v by_o our_o religion_n that_o substance_n &_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n wherein_o we_o dissent_v from_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n and_o do_v all_o of_o we_o consent_n among_o ourselves_o both_o we_o with_o those_o other_o church_n and_o those_o other_o church_n with_o we_o in_o this_o land_n by_o popery_n like_o wise_a i_o understand_v all_o that_o doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n which_o differ_v and_o dissent_v from_o this_o our_o religion_n &_o the_o doctrine_n hold_v and_o profess_v public_o here_o in_o england_n &_o other_o church_n in_o like_a manner_n reform_v in_o this_o treatise_n therefore_o i_o do_v undertake_v by_o plain_a and_o evident_a argument_n fit_a for_o the_o capacity_n of_o all_o sort_n both_o poor_a and_o rich_a both_o learned_a &_o unlearned_a though_o they_o can_v read_v or_o understand_v only_o the_o english_a tongue_n to_o prove_v that_o this_o our_o religion_n be_v of_o god_n and_o that_o which_o god_n as_o touch_v the_o substance_n and_o doctrine_n thereof_o do_v well_o accept_v and_o like_v of_o and_o contrary_o by_o like_a argument_n as_o plain_o to_o show_v that_o popery_n be_v not_o of_o god_n and_o therefore_o also_o not_o in_o any_o account_n with_o he_o but_o abominable_a and_o detestable_a in_o in_o his_o sight_n the_o first_o argument_n touch_v the_o breed_n and_o beget_v of_o true_a religion_n thus_o have_v declare_v both_o the_o reason_n that_o move_v i_o to_o this_o work_n and_o likewise_o the_o state_n of_o the_o whole_a cause_n handle_v herein_o i_o will_v now_o enter_v into_o the_o argument_n themselves_o here_o therefore_o first_o of_o all_o let_v we_o consider_v the_o chief_a and_o principal_a mean_n whereby_o both_o that_o religion_n that_o be_v of_o god_n and_o acceptable_a unto_o god_n be_v at_o the_o first_o begin_v and_o frame_v and_o afterward_o further_o build_v and_o perfect_v in_o they_o that_o attain_v unto_o it_o and_o also_o of_o the_o like_a mean_n whereby_o popery_n be_v at_o the_o first_o hatch_v and_o afterward_o brood_a &_o further_o strengthon_v touch_v the_o former_a it_o be_v most_o certain_a that_o it_o be_v always_o begin_v by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n for_o the_o apostle_n s_o paul_n express_o teach_v us._n rom._n 10._o 17._o that_o faith_n be_v by_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n preach_v s._n james_n also_o chap._n 1._o 18._o say_v that_o we_o be_v beget_v again_o by_o the_o word_n of_o truth_n our_o saviour_n likewise_o in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o seed_n matth._n 13._o plain_o show_v that_o that_o only_o be_v good_a ground_n into_o the_o which_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n his_o word_n fall_v bring_v forth_o good_a fruit_n and_o so_o likewise_o that_o that_o only_o be_v to_o be_v account_v good_a fruit_n which_o spring_v from_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o word_n as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v the_o only_a ordinary_a mean_n whereby_o faith_n and_o regeneration_n be_v begin_v in_o every_o man_n who_o god_n will_v have_v to_o be_v save_v so_o also_o it_o be_v the_o especial_a mean_n whereby_o they_o be_v to_o be_v further_o build_v till_o they_o be_v finish_v s._n peter_n exhort_v the_o christian_n to_o who_o he_o write_v that_o as_o they_o be_v already_o bear_v a_o new_a by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n 1._o pet._n 1._o 23._o so_o also_o as_o new_o bear_v babe_n they_o shall_v desire_v the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n that_o they_o may_v grow_v thereby_o chap._n 2._o verse_n 2._o saint_n paul_n likewise_o have_v first_o exhort_v the_o thessalonian_o not_o to_o quench_v the_o spirit_n which_o they_o have_v receive_v that_o be_v to_o cherish_v the_o spirit_n mean_v the_o work_n of_o faith_n &_o regeneration_n wrought_v by_o the_o spirit_n a_o metonymy_a of_o the_o cause_n
god_n i_o answer_v with_o s._n john_n they_o go_v our_o from_o we_o but_o they_o be_v not_o of_o we_o 1._o joh._n 2._o 19_o they_o profess_v our_o religion_n but_o they_o never_o true_o embrace_v the_o same_o neither_o do_v ever_o true_o feel_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o their_o soul_n yea_o though_o it_o may_v be_v that_o they_o have_v some_o joy_n in_o our_o religion_n yet_o it_o be_v but_o the_o joy_n of_o the_o stony_a ground_n wherein_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o word_n have_v no_o sound_a root_n math._n 13._o 20._o and_o like_a unto_o the_o joy_n of_o herod_n at_o the_o preach_n of_o john_n baptist_n mark_n 6._o 20._o yea_o but_o some_o perhaps_o will_v object_v further_o that_o many_o of_o the_o best_a of_o our_o religion_n be_v often_o in_o great_a heaviness_n of_o mind_n and_o do_v much_o doubt_n of_o god_n his_o favour_n etc._n etc._n yea_o that_o most_o part_n of_o their_o life_n they_o continue_v in_o this_o pensivenes_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o although_o this_o fruit_n of_o joy_n and_o sound_a comfort_n do_v always_o grow_v upon_o the_o tree_n of_o our_o religion_n yet_o sometime_o the_o twig_n of_o our_o old_a crabstock_n into_o which_o this_o religion_n be_v graft_v do_v grow_v out_o so_o far_o through_o our_o evil_a husbandry_n and_o not_o prune_v they_o in_o time_n that_o the_o leave_v thereof_o be_v very_o thick_a according_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o crab_n do_v so_o shadow_v this_o fruit_n that_o even_o he_o that_o be_v graft_v with_o the_o imp_n and_o science_n of_o our_o religion_n can_v hardly_o find_v this_o fruit_n without_o narrow_a search_n and_o diligent_a turn_v over_o and_o remove_v the_o leaf_n as_o it_o be_v one_o by_o one_o with_o his_o hand_n as_o also_o we_o read_v that_o although_o christ_n be_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o two_o disciple_n that_o be_v go_v to_o emaus_n and_o talk_v with_o they_o and_o yet_o be_v not_o discern_v by_o they_o because_o their_o eye_n be_v hold_v that_o they_o can_v not_o know_v he_o luk._n 24._o 16._o as_o also_o that_o marie_n magdalene_n see_v jesus_n and_o talk_v with_o he_o but_o yet_o know_v he_o not_o joh._n 20._o 14._o so_o also_o the_o child_n of_o god_n that_o by_o a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n be_v partaker_n of_o christ_n do_v not_o yet_o see_v christ_n nor_o the_o great_a comfort_n which_o they_o have_v by_o christ_n because_o their_o eye_n be_v hold_v that_o be_v their_o sight_n be_v dim_v by_o the_o sight_n of_o sin_n partly_o and_o partly_o also_o by_o the_o sleight_n of_o satan_n that_o they_o can_v neither_o see_v nor_o feel_v that_o matter_n of_o joy_n and_o comfort_n which_o they_o have_v and_o carry_v daily_o about_o within_o their_o breast_n 8_o final_o touch_v this_o comfort_n it_o be_v with_o the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o such_o as_o be_v true_o of_o our_o religion_n as_o it_o be_v with_o many_o simple_a man_n in_o the_o world_n touch_v their_o earthly_a possession_n and_o inheritance_n for_o although_o they_o have_v never_o so_o good_a right_n unto_o they_o and_o never_o so_o good_a assurance_n of_o they_o even_o as_o good_a as_o possible_o they_o can_v have_v and_o as_o all_o the_o lawyer_n by_o all_o the_o law_n in_o the_o world_n can_v make_v they_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o they_o oftentimes_o meet_v with_o some_o pettifogger_n and_o cozen_a mate_n that_o tell_v they_o their_o title_n be_v naught_o and_o not_o worth_a a_o straw_n &_o so_o forth_o now_o by_o such_o word_n the_o simple_a man_n be_v half_o persuade_v and_o begin_v something_o to_o doubt_n yea_o sometime_o almost_o to_o fear_v and_o thus_o he_o continue_v till_o he_o meet_v with_o his_o learned_a counsel_n that_o do_v again_o declare_v unto_o he_o and_o assure_v he_o of_o the_o contrary_a so_o isaie_v be_v it_o with_o the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o such_o as_o be_v true_o season_v with_o our_o religion_n by_o christ_n jesus_n they_o have_v as_o good_a right_n to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n as_o be_v possible_a and_o their_o estate_n be_v so_o good_a as_o that_o all_o the_o enemy_n they_o have_v either_o carnal_a or_o spiritual_a can_v possible_o defeat_v they_o thereof_o notwithstanding_o such_o be_v their_o simplicity_n in_o heavenly_a thing_n as_o oftentimes_o it_o be_v great_a in_o earthly_a thing_n that_o their_o enemy_n and_o the_o enemy_n of_o god_n meet_v with_o they_o and_o reason_v the_o case_n either_o by_o his_o outward_a instrument_n or_o by_o those_o secret_a friend_n which_o he_o have_v in_o a_o man_n his_o own_o heart_n do_v at_o the_o last_o by_o his_o subtlety_n make_v they_o to_o doubt_v and_o fill_v they_o with_o fear_n till_o they_o meet_v again_o with_o their_o old_a counsellor_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n who_o sometime_o keep_v himself_o close_o and_o for_o a_o time_n will_v not_o as_o it_o be_v be_v speak_v withal_o to_o try_v what_o his_o client_n will_v or_o can_v do_v without_o he_o but_o when_o they_o meet_v and_o confer_v with_o he_o by_o the_o time_n that_o he_o have_v a_o little_a repeat_v their_o assurance_n and_o declare_v their_o right_n from_o point_n to_o point_n by_o his_o several_a effect_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o how_o also_o christ_n jesus_n purchase_v salvation_n for_o they_o and_o bestow_v it_o upon_o they_o and_o therefore_o also_o give_v he_o unto_o they_o as_o a_o earnest_a penny_n thereof_o to_o seal_v and_o confirm_v the_o whole_a gift_n then_o do_v they_o cast_v away_o their_o former_a fear_n and_o recover_v their_o ancient_a comfort_n so_o be_v it_o from_o time_n to_o time_n with_o they_o whilst_o satan_n talk_v with_o they_o and_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n hide_v himself_o they_o doubt_v but_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n talk_v with_o they_o by_o his_o lively_a and_o sensible_a operation_n in_o their_o heart_n then_o be_v they_o of_o good_a cheer_n and_o comfort_n yet_o even_o whilst_o they_o fear_v they_o have_v no_o cause_n of_o fear_n but_o their_o right_n be_v always_o one_o and_o the_o same_o only_o sometime_o by_o their_o simplicity_n they_o see_v not_o their_o right_n this_o shall_v suffice_v to_o have_v speak_v both_o of_o the_o abundance_n of_o all_o heavenly_a comfort_n in_o our_o religion_n and_o also_o of_o the_o want_n thereof_o in_o popery_n wherefore_o i_o do_v again_o conclude_v both_o that_o our_o religion_n be_v most_o pleasant_a and_o acceptable_a unto_o the_o god_n of_o all_o comfort_n and_o also_o that_o popery_n be_v altogether_o abominable_a in_o his_o sight_n the_o eight_o argument_n touch_v the_o wisdom_n of_o true_a religion_n a_o infallible_a note_n and_o sign_n thereof_o i_o may_v here_o also_o not_o unfit_o nor_o out_o of_o place_n add_v the_o foolishness_n of_o popery_n for_o what_o can_v be_v more_o foolish_a or_o ridiculous_a than_o the_o worship_n of_o such_o relic_n as_o they_o do_v both_o worship_n and_o also_o take_v great_a pain_n and_o travail_v many_o mile_n &_o defray_v great_a charge_n for_o the_o worship_n of_o they_o especial_o most_o foolish_a absurd_a and_o gross_a be_v it_o to_o worship_v such_o as_o before_o have_v be_v name_v as_o the_o very_a â—ayle_n of_o the_o ass_n whereon_o christ_n ride_v &_o such_o like_a i_o ask_v here_o no_o pardon_n as_o speak_v gross_o the_o holiness_n of_o the_o thing_n must_v take_v away_o the_o homelines_n of_o the_o word_n but_o i_o marvel_v they_o can_v get_v nâ—_n better_o and_o sweet_a morsel_n than_o the_o tail_n it_o may_v be_v they_o come_v too_o late_o to_o market_n and_o so_o all_o the_o better_a piece_n be_v take_v up_o before_o by_o dog_n kite_n raven_n and_o such_o other_o customer_n as_o do_v use_n to_o resort_v to_o such_o market_n this_o only_o be_v leave_v and_o so_o it_o be_v buy_v for_o the_o pope_n his_o own_o tooth_n but_o he_o of_o his_o mere_a holy_a conscience_n will_v not_o eat_v meat_n of_o so_o great_a a_o price_n and_o of_o his_o great_a liberality_n bestow_v it_o upon_o the_o church_n for_o ever_o if_o they_o make_v so_o much_o account_n of_o the_o tail_n they_o will_v much_o more_o have_v honour_v the_o head_n if_o they_o have_v come_v time_n enough_o to_o the_o market_n what_o then_o will_v they_o have_v do_v with_o the_o whole_a body_n if_o they_o can_v have_v get_v it_o and_o if_o they_o make_v such_o reckon_n of_o a_o piece_n of_o a_o dead_a ass_n i_o suppose_v that_o if_o they_o have_v the_o live_a ass_n and_o can_v keep_v he_o alive_a and_o yet_o what_o a_o fool_n be_o i_o to_o make_v a_o question_n of_o their_o power_n in_o such_o a_o thing_n when_o as_o every_o man_n know_v that_o their_o pope_n and_o every_o priest_n of_o his_o beget_n can_v make_v god_n himself_o and_o we_o hear_v also_o before_o that_o the_o pope_n himself_o can_v make_v something_o of_o nothing_o
hear_v the_o scripture_n search_v the_o scripture_n meditate_v the_o scripture_n and_o pray_v unto_o god_n for_o the_o true_a understanding_n of_o the_o scripture_n the_o more_o also_o do_v man_n mislike_v of_o popery_n and_o grow_v into_o love_n of_o our_o religion_n the_o papist_n themselves_o see_v this_o to_o be_v so_o and_o can_v not_o deny_v it_o therefore_o do_v they_o by_o all_o mean_v the_o overthrow_n of_o their_o religion_n and_o the_o grow_a of_o we_o by_o the_o use_n of_o the_o scripture_n why_o shall_v they_o so_o straight_o restrain_v the_o common_a people_n from_o it_o if_o they_o think_v as_o they_o speak_v and_o write_v that_o their_o unwritten_a verity_n be_v of_o god_n aswell_o as_o the_o scripture_n why_o shall_v they_o make_v they_o more_o common_a than_o the_o scripture_n be_v it_o because_o they_o think_v they_o more_o easy_a and_o therefore_o fit_a for_o the_o capacity_n of_o the_o common_a people_n than_o the_o scripture_n this_o will_v not_o stand_v with_o that_o which_o they_o make_v the_o ground_n of_o they_o and_o which_o they_o pretend_v for_o their_o special_a warranr_n namely_o with_o the_o word_n of_o our_o saviour_n to_o his_o disciple_n
