there_o be_v two_o thing_n by_o which_o a_o man_n may_v see_v the_o danger_n and_o folly_n of_o this_o sin_n of_o covetousness_n 1._o it_o oppose_v all_o the_o good_a of_o nature_n and_o all_o the_o good_a of_o grace_n it_o check_v all_o grace_n and_o the_o way_n thereof_o and_o the_o whole_a spirit_n of_o grace_n it_o cast_v a_o damp_n and_o choke_v a_o man_n from_o hear_v the_o word_n from_o do_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o thrive_a by_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n it_o stifle_v every_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n the_o grow_v of_o it_o it_o choke_v all_o the_o good_a of_o nature_n all_o kind_n of_o punishment_n both_o because_o it_o take_v away_o all_o that_o watchfulness_n that_o man_n observe_v not_o the_o season_n of_o danger_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o our_o saviour_n wish_v they_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o be_v overcome_v with_o surfeit_v and_o drunkenness_n and_o the_o care_n of_o this_o life_n lest_o that_o day_n come_v on_o they_o unaware_o a_o man_n which_o be_v lade_v any_o creature_n but_o it_o may_v be_v term_v idolatry_n the_o harlot_n be_v the_o lustful_a man_n idol_n he_o make_v a_o idol_n of_o she_o preferment_n and_o honour_n be_v the_o ambitious_a iii_o for_o there_o be_v a_o general_a reason_n for_o other_o sin_n which_o be_v this_o what_o a_o man_n prefer_v before_o god_n that_o he_o make_v as_o his_o god_n exalt_v it_o in_o the_o throne_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o for_o that_o general_a reason_n covetousness_n be_v call_v idolatry_n but_o there_o be_v a_o special_a evil_n in_o covetousness_n which_o make_v it_o idolatry_n in_o a_o deep_o die_v a_o covetous_a man_n beside_o that_o in_o the_o general_a respect_n his_o money_n be_v his_o idol_n in_o the_o particular_a he_o put_v trust_v in_o it_o he_o have_v a_o confidence_n in_o it_o and_o that_o be_v the_o great_a honour_n that_o god_n can_v have_v when_o we_o can_v put_v trust_n and_o secure_v ourselves_o and_o bear_v ourselves_o out_o upon_o god_n protection_n and_o in_o that_o respect_n there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o propriety_n in_o those_o word_n to_o this_o sin_n for_o which_o thing_n sake_n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n come_v upon_o the_o child_n of_o disobedience_n vers_fw-la the_o 6._o it_o be_v not_o only_o true_a of_o other_o sin_n which_o may_v be_v take_v notice_n of_o but_o to_o provoke_v god_n in_o this_o secret_a sin_n which_o the_o world_n take_v not_o so_o much_o notice_n of_o for_o this_o thing_n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n come_v upon_o the_o child_n of_o disobedience_n one_o remarkable_a place_n we_o have_v in_o the_o first_o of_o timothy_n 6._o 9_o 10._o but_o they_o that_o will_v be_v rich_a fall_n into_o a_o temptation_n and_o a_o snare_n and_o into_o many_o foolish_a and_o hurtful_a lust_n etc._n etc._n for_o the_o love_n of_o money_n this_o be_v as_o full_a a_o place_n as_o i_o can_v well_o conceive_v those_o that_o will_v be_v rich_a that_o be_v mad_a after_o the_o world_n they_o be_v in_o a_o most_o dangerous_a condition_n i_o beseech_v you_o stand_v not_o upon_o point_n with_o god_n to_o avoid_v covetousness_n be_v generous_a be_v far_o from_o covetousness_n shun_v all_o appearance_n of_o covetousness_n be_v noble_a reformation_n against_o all_o the_o spice_n of_o covetousness_n for_o the_o further_a prosecution_n of_o this_o to_o cut_v off_o all_o other_o thing_n i_o shall_v only_o propound_v those_o thing_n that_o may_v be_v antidote_n against_o this_o sin_n and_o remedy_n to_o cure_v this_o sin_n both_o to_o recover_v those_o which_o have_v be_v touch_v with_o this_o dangerous_a sin_n and_o to_o prevent_v it_o for_o the_o future_a i_o take_v they_o both_o and_o for_o they_o both_o there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o help_n 1._o something_o habitual_a to_o take_v care_n to_o furnish_v thy_o soul_n with_o that_o may_v lock_v it_o up_o and_o take_v up_o the_o room_n that_o there_o be_v no_o room_n for_o covetousness_n in_o the_o heart_n 2._o something_o that_o be_v actual_a to_o be_v do_v by_o a_o renew_a act_n and_o continual_o use_v for_o the_o prevention_n and_o the_o recover_v a_o man_n from_o it_o i_o shall_v but_o mention_v the_o former_a for_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v habitual_a 1._o in_o general_n labour_v to_o establish_v thy_o heart_n with_o grace_n for_o vice_n and_o sin_n be_v never_o cast_v out_o kind_o nor_o certain_o but_o by_o the_o introduction_n of_o that_o which_o be_v contrary_a and_o that_o be_v grace_n therefore_o if_o you_o will_v empty_v your_o heart_n of_o sin_n we_o must_v clavum_fw-la clavo_fw-la pellere_fw-la as_o they_o say_v drive_v out_o sin_n devil_n with_o another_o so_o the_o only_a true_a way_n of_o drive_v out_o sin_n in_o general_a and_o so_o this_o sin_n of_o covetousness_n in_o particular_a must_v be_v by_o grace_n bring_v into_o the_o soul_n to_o have_v a_o heart_n establish_v full_a of_o gracious_a thought_n inclination_n and_o affection_n i_o shall_v mention_v some_o more_o especial_o there_o be_v four_o pair_n of_o grace_n in_o particular_a which_o be_v wonderful_a conduce_v and_o effectual_a for_o the_o dispossess_v of_o this_o devil_n of_o covetousness_n the_o first_o pair_n for_o i_o shall_v join_v two_o together_o be_v humility_n and_o temperance_n or_o sobriety_n it_o may_v be_v some_o will_v think_v those_o two_o be_v far_o off_o but_o i_o tell_v you_o in_o the_o explication_n that_o covetousness_n be_v sin_n that_o covetousness_n do_v frequent_o wait_v upon_o when_o a_o man_n be_v not_o overmaster_v with_o covetousness_n that_o be_v not_o his_o direct_a sin_n there_o may_v be_v other_o sin_n that_o will_v use_v the_o service_n of_o covetousness_n have_v it_o as_o a_o servant_n to_o instance_n covetousness_n be_v a_o servant_n to_o pride_n and_o lust_n and_o to_o intemperancy_n now_o if_o a_o man_n be_v of_o a_o humble_a spirit_n it_o will_v kill_v these_o lust_n a_o man_n will_v not_o aim_v at_o a_o high_a estate_n for_o the_o most_o part_n man_n aim_v at_o great_a thing_n rather_o for_o pride_n because_o he_o will_v bear_v a_o high_a port_n in_o the_o world_n he_o will_v be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o he_o in_o the_o act_n some_o great_a one_o in_o the_o world_n out_o of_o pride_n that_o make_v they_o scrape_v from_o this_o man_n and_o from_o the_o other_o it_o make_v they_o set_v upon_o any_o injurious_a course_n to_o advance_v his_o pride_n therefore_o if_o any_o one_o will_v keep_v pride_v own_o let_v he_o learn_v humility_n and_o if_o a_o man_n will_v keep_v pride_n under_o that_o will_v be_v a_o good_a mean_n to_o suppress_v his_o covetousness_n 2._o temperance_n and_o sobriety_n be_v another_o excellent_a mean_n to_o keep_v under_o covetousness_n if_o i_o be_v a_o temperate_a sober_a man_n and_o do_v not_o affect_v either_o excess_n in_o diet_n or_o apparel_n but_o be_o content_a with_o ordinary_a diet_n and_o clothes_n and_o to_o go_v in_o a_o sober_a way_n what_o need_v i_o tumble_v so_o much_o in_o the_o world_n a_o little_a will_v serve_v for_o necessity_n all_o be_v for_o the_o back_n and_o the_o belly_n covetousness_n plunge_v a_o man_n into_o a_o thousand_o inconvenience_n it_o make_v they_o lay_v about_o they_o infinite_o in_o the_o world_n because_o they_o must_v live_v at_o a_o luxurious_a rate_n they_o must_v go_v so_o fine_a in_o clothes_n and_o have_v such_o diet_n whereas_o it_o may_v be_v as_o advantageous_a every_o other_o way_n a_o man_n may_v drive_v a_o trade_n within_o a_o lesser_a compass_n so_o contract_v it_o it_o will_v turn_v to_o more_o advantage_n and_o to_o his_o great_a glory_n if_o he_o make_v his_o pride_n exceed_v in_o nothing_o but_o in_o intemperancy_n or_o greediness_n after_o the_o best_a thing_n this_o will_v clean_o turn_v the_o channel_n another_o way_n 2._o the_o second_o pair_n of_o grace_n which_o i_o will_v have_v you_o to_o fix_v increase_n and_o
cherish_v in_o your_o heart_n be_v the_o due_a love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o love_n of_o thy_o neighbour_n and_o this_o will_v be_v a_o excellent_a weapon_n to_o keep_v under_o covetousness_n for_o if_o a_o man_n do_v love_n god_n and_o love_v his_o neighbour_n as_o he_o ought_v at_o least_o it_o will_v take_v he_o off_o from_o all_o baseness_n of_o covetousness_n he_o will_v not_o be_v base_a to_o the_o service_n of_o god_n pinch_v his_o soul_n forbear_v to_o allow_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o advancement_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o christ_n nor_o will_v he_o be_v injurious_a to_o oppress_v and_o defraud_v his_o neighbour_n if_o he_o be_v not_o altogether_o for_o himself_o for_o covetousness_n arise_v extreme_o from_o self-love_n when_o a_o man_n regard_v not_o god_n nor_o his_o neighbour_n he_o care_v not_o who_o he_o pinch_v from_o so_o he_o may_v advance_v himself_o now_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o neighbour_n will_v be_v a_o great_a preservative_n and_o there_o fore_o labour_v to_o ingraff_n those_o affection_n in_o thy_o heart_n 3._o the_o three_o pair_n of_o grace_n which_o i_o will_v have_v you_o to_o labour_v for_o be_v heavenly_a mindedness_n happiness_n in_o heaven_n and_o so_o for_o a_o content_a spirit_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v godliness_n with_o contentedness_n be_v great_a gain_n and_o for_o he_o which_o can_v frame_v himself_o to_o a_o content_a spirit_n a_o little_a will_v suffice_v if_o he_o have_v but_o food_n and_o raiment_n mere_a necessity_n a_o content_a iii_o serm._n iii_o spirit_n can_v rest_v quiet_a and_o not_o restles_o reach_v after_o great_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n 4._o labour_v to_o get_v and_o to_o cherish_v both_o faith_n and_o spiritual_a wisdom_n it_o will_v be_v a_o excellent_a preservative_n in_o this_o case_n if_o a_o man_n get_v faith_n a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n and_o adherence_n to_o christ_n bring_v christ_n into_o thy_o heart_n the_o love_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o prize_v of_o he_o and_o adherence_n to_o christ_n will_v infinite_o make_v dagon_n fall_v as_o dagon_n fall_v before_o the_o ark_n so_o this_o break_v the_o neck_n of_o all_o sin_n all_o will_v fall_v to_o the_o ground_n and_o particular_o this_o base_a sin_n faith_n in_o the_o assurance_n of_o god_n promise_n that_o i_o believe_v the_o promise_n of_o god_n in_o his_o word_n that_o he_o will_v not_o leave_v forsake_v or_o fail_v they_o in_o their_o necessary_n which_o be_v careful_a not_o to_o fail_v in_o duty_n towards_o he_o this_o faith_n will_v be_v a_o admirable_a antidote_n against_o covetousness_n spiritual_a wisdom_n also_o be_v a_o great_a help_n for_o the_o root_n of_o all_o the_o poison_n be_v not_o any_o defect_n in_o the_o action_n or_o affection_n but_o in_o the_o understanding_n if_o man_n be_v wise_a to_o know_v the_o great_a good_a and_o to_o desire_v what_o be_v most_o desirable_a and_o advantageous_a for_o they_o they_o be_v then_o in_o the_o right_a way_n to_o put_v themselves_o towards_o that_o great_a thing_n but_o if_o man_n be_v foolish_a and_o think_v all_o lie_v in_o wealth_n nothing_o else_o be_v worth_a talk_n of_o but_o wealth_n nothing_o will_v make_v a_o man_n real_o good_a which_o have_v any_o feel_n with_o it_o but_o so_o much_o wealth_n if_o a_o man_n be_v thus_o poison_v with_o these_o foolish_a conceit_n he_o will_v despise_v and_o undervalue_v all_o the_o wisdom_n and_o all_o the_o godliness_n and_o the_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o any_o man_n measure_v all_o excellency_n according_a to_o a_o man_n estate_n iii_o serm._n iii_o as_o indeed_o the_o world_n go_v too_o far_o this_o way_n all_o magistracy_n be_v choose_v by_o estate_n all_o reputation_n by_o estate_n these_o thing_n do_v secret_o poison_v and_o as_o the_o wiseman_n say_v that_o estate_n will_v never_o excel_v in_o virtue_n in_o which_o there_o be_v a_o high_a price_n set_v on_o riches_n if_o man_n will_v get_v spiritual_a wisdom_n to_o discern_v the_o excellency_n of_o thing_n and_o to_o moderate_v a_o man_n self_n according_a to_o the_o worth_n of_o thing_n it_o will_v be_v a_o good_a mean_n to_o keep_v back_o the_o overween_n after_o wealth_n which_o hinder_v the_o growth_n of_o goodness_n and_o advance_v covetousness_n there_o be_v these_o habitual_a grace_n that_o must_v be_v get_v into_o the_o heart_n 2._o i_o shall_v give_v you_o a_o brief_a touch_n of_o the_o other_o branch_n there_o be_v some_o other_o thing_n actual_a to_o be_v do_v which_o be_v of_o great_a importance_n i_o will_v mention_v all_o in_o four_o step_n and_o degree_n and_o but_o mere_o name_v they_o 1._o we_o must_v watch_v 2._o we_o must_v pray_v 3._o we_o must_v strive_v 4._o we_o must_v meditate_v upon_o those_o thing_n which_o may_v give_v we_o victory_n 1._o we_o must_v watch_v against_o and_o take_v heed_n lest_o we_o be_v surprise_v and_o draw_v unaware_o to_o it_o 2._o we_o must_v also_o pray_v against_o it_o many_o sin_n we_o fall_v into_o because_o we_o beg_v not_o god_n assistance_n if_o we_o will_v pray_v ingenuous_o and_o sincere_o as_o david_n do_v lord_n incline_v my_o heart_n unto_o thy_o testimony_n and_o because_o the_o gain_n be_v sweet_a but_o because_o the_o sin_n be_v odious_a therefore_o we_o must_v strive_v against_o it_o 4._o last_o we_o must_v meditate_v upon_o these_o thing_n which_o be_v conducible_a to_o establish_v the_o soul_n against_o covetousness_n i_o will_v run_v they_o over_o in_o general_a because_o i_o can_v go_v through_o the_o particular_n 1._o consider_v the_o event_n
