we_o in_o it_o and_o let_v that_o suffice_v for_o the_o preface_n or_o preamble_n or_o word_n of_o caution_n as_o applicable_a to_o our_o present_a purpose_n let_v no_o man_n deceive_v himself_o now_o second_o i_o may_v apply_v to_o this_o likewise_o counsel_n ii_o of_o the_o counsel_n even_o the_o counsel_n and_o exhortation_n itself_o if_o any_o man_n among_o you_o seem_v to_o be_v wise_a in_o say_v david_n psal_n 49.18_o that_o be_v he_o flatter_v and_o applaud_v himself_o and_o we_o have_v a_o instance_n of_o it_o in_o the_o gospel_n luke_n 12.19_o soul_n thou_o have_v much_o good_n lay_v up_o for_o many_o year_n take_v thy_o ease_n etc._n etc._n riches_n and_o self_n admiration_n although_o i_o do_v not_o say_v always_o yet_o very_o often_o go_v together_o unless_o it_o please_v god_n in_o that_o condition_n therefore_o when_o the_o apostle_n paul_n will_v instruct_v his_o scholar_n timothy_n what_o counsel_n to_o give_v to_o rich_a man_n 6.17_o 1_o tim._n 6.17_o he_o bid_v he_o charge_v they_o that_o they_o be_v not_o high-minded_a nor_o trust_v in_o uncertain_a riches_n as_o lay_v the_o great_a caution_n there_o where_o be_v the_o great_a danger_n this_o be_v that_o which_o be_v here_o suppose_a and_o take_v for_o grant_v as_o that_o which_o through_o man_n corruption_n lie_v in_o the_o very_a nature_n of_o the_o condition_n without_o the_o more_o heed_n and_o caution_n rich_a man_n they_o be_v apt_a to_o think_v themselves_o wise_a man_n and_o to_o think_v themselves_o the_o wise_a as_o they_o can_v hold_v their_o riches_n the_o better_a and_o keep_v themselves_o from_o part_v with_o they_o though_o upon_o never_o so_o good_a a_o occasion_n there_o be_v a_o piece_n of_o worldly_a wisdom_n which_o do_v keep_v off_o man_n of_o the_o world_n from_o those_o good_a work_n which_o be_v to_o be_v do_v by_o they_o and_o they_o be_v not_o common_o without_o their_o pretence_n and_o carnal_a reason_n and_o shift_n and_o excuse_n which_o they_o be_v please_v to_o make_v use_n of_o to_o this_o purpose_n well_o but_o hear_v now_o what_o be_v the_o apostles_n counsel_n and_o advice_n u_fw-mi we_o may_v very_o well_o apply_v it_o even_o to_o such_o as_o these_o some_o but_o the_o time_n be_v hard_a answer_v objection_n answer_v trading_n dead_a money_n scarce_o the_o world_n uncertain_a we_o will_v be_v willing_a to_o do_v some_o good_a with_o our_o estate_n but_o we_o know_v not_o what_o will_v become_v of_o we_o nor_o how_o thing_n may_v hereafter_o go_v with_o we_o this_o at_o the_o first_o hear_v may_v seem_v to_o have_v some_o what_o in_o it_o but_o in_o good_a earnest_n it_o will_v not_o hold_v water_n it_o be_v not_o that_o which_o will_v excuse_v you_o nay_o do_v rather_o in_o some_o respect_v more_o engage_v you_o and_o so_o we_o shall_v time_n may_v be_v such_o as_o the_o very_a matter_n and_o subject_n of_o our_o bounty_n may_v be_v take_v away_o college_n and_o hospital_n and_o almshouse_n and_o place_n of_o relief_n they_o may_v not_o always_o continue_v in_o be_v and_o then_o what_o will_v become_v of_o all_o the_o good_a which_o be_v do_v by_o we_o this_o be_v still_o a_o piece_n of_o the_o wisdom_n condemn_v in_o the_o text_n but_o such_o as_o have_v no_o strength_n in_o it_o for_o first_o be_v you_o sure_a that_o your_o estate_n will_v hold_v good_a hereafter_o in_o any_o other_o way_n beside_o those_o that_o which_o immediate_o follow_v so_o it_o have_v in_o it_o the_o force_n of_o a_o preface_n and_o preparatory_a introduction_n as_o make_v a_o very_a good_a entrance_n and_o passage_n for_o that_o which_o come_v after_o take_v it_o which_o way_n you_o will_v as_o either_o way_n you_o may_v take_v it_o though_o i_o incline_v rather_o to_o the_o latter_a which_o be_v by_o way_n of_o this_o be_v that_o which_o he_o say_v let_v no_o man_n deceive_v himself_o which_o he_o speak_v not_o only_o to_o the_o corinthian_n that_o we_o may_v not_o by_o the_o way_n deceive_v ourselves_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o person_n speak_v to_o but_o he_o speak_v it_o to_o every_o one_o of_o us._n mutate_v nomine_fw-la de_fw-la te_fw-la it_o be_v a_o caution_n of_o a_o general_n latitude_n and_o extent_n which_o it_o carry_v with_o it_o to_o all_o age_n and_o time_n whatsoever_o even_o to_o these_o more_o particular_o and_o especial_o wherein_o we_o live_v then_o in_o which_o as_o there_o be_v never_o more_o defraud_v and_o deceive_v of_o other_o so_o neither_o more_o deceive_v of_o man_n self_n disease_n self-deceit_n a_o general_a disease_n this_o self-deceit_n it_o be_v the_o common_a and_o general_a disease_n that_o reign_v among_o we_o yea_o indeed_o upon_o proof_n we_o shall_v find_v it_o to_o be_v the_o ground_n and_o foundation_n of_o all_o other_o deceit_n in_o the_o world_n what_o ever_o deceit_n be_v abroad_o it_o begin_v at_o home_n and_o take_v its_o rise_n and_o original_n from_o thence_o if_o man_n be_v true_a to_o their_o own_o interest_n they_o will_v never_o be_v false_a to_o other_o if_o they_o be_v faithful_a in_o what_o belong_v to_o themselves_o they_o may_v be_v trust_v with_o their_o neighbour_n but_o now_o whilst_o they_o first_o try_v conclusion_n upon_o their_o own_o heart_n for_o the_o deceive_a of_o they_o they_o do_v more_o ready_o practice_v it_o upon_o their_o brethren_n for_o the_o deceive_a of_o they_o with_o they_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o the_o scripture_n do_v so_o often_o lay_v such_o a_o caution_n and_o proviso_n as_o this_o be_v do_v not_o err_v be_v not_o deceive_v let_v no_o man_n beguile_v you_o and_o here_o deceive_v not_o yourselves_o all_o still_o for_o this_o reason_n to_o signify_v the_o general_a proneness_n and_o disposition_n which_o be_v in_o our_o nature_n hereunto_o as_o oftentimes_o to_o be_v cozen_v and_o deceive_v and_o beguile_v by_o other_o so_o as_o often_o among_o the_o rest_n by_o ourselves_o to_o be_v the_o deceive_v and_o the_o deceiver_n both_o at_o once_o the_o holy_a ghost_n himself_o give_v we_o a_o very_a good_a account_n of_o it_o from_o whence_o it_o proceed_v self-deceit_n the_o ground_n of_o self-deceit_n namely_o from_o the_o nature_n and_o quality_n of_o the_o heart_n itself_o which_o be_v fraudulent_a and_o deceitful_a above_o all_o thing_n 17.9_o jer._n 17.9_o a_o deceitful_a heart_n will_v not_o spare_v so_o much_o as_o itself_o but_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o deceive_v that_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o all_n more_o or_o less_o have_v remain_v in_o they_o those_o which_o be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o nature_n and_o unregeneracy_n they_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o deceit_n their_o heart_n do_v continual_o frame_v and_o fashion_n deceit_n in_o they_o as_o the_o scripture_n speak_v those_o who_o nature_n be_v change_v by_o grace_n yet_o they_o have_v some_o relic_n and_o remainder_n of_o the_o old_a man_n abide_v in_o they_o which_o be_v corrupt_a according_a to_o the_o deceitful_a lust_n 4.22_o eph._n 4.22_o ever_o since_o the_o serpent_n deceive_v we_o we_o have_v still_o be_v ready_a more_o or_o less_o to_o deceive_v ourselves_o will_v you_o know_v by_o what_o mean_n and_o in_o what_o way_n this_o be_v do_v self-deceit_n the_o way_n of_o self-deceit_n take_v it_o brief_o thus_o first_o by_o false_a conceit_n and_o apprehension_n which_o man_n have_v of_o themselves_o apprehension_n 1._o by_o false_a apprehension_n self-flattery_n have_v a_o great_a stroke_n and_o influence_n upon_o self-deceit_n he_o that_o think_v himself_o to_o be_v something_o when_o he_o be_v nothing_o he_o he_o have_v a_o special_a respect_n to_o here_o in_o this_o as_o we_o may_v see_v by_o that_o which_o follow_v and_o shall_v see_v more_o by_o and_o by_o if_o any_o man_n among_o you_o seem_v to_o be_v wise_a etc._n etc._n so_o then_o let_v no_o man_n deceive_v himself_o that_o be_v by_o too_o high_a a_o conceit_n and_o apprehension_n of_o his_o own_o wisdom_n think_v himself_o wise_a than_o he_o be_v or_o have_v cause_n to_o think_v himself_o this_o be_v that_o which_o many_o person_n oftentimes_o be_v subject_a unto_o and_o thereby_o to_o deceive_v themselves_o second_o hope_n 2_o by_o false_a hope_n by_o false_a hope_n and_o promise_n which_o man_n make_v to_o themselves_o it_o be_v a_o great_a deceive_a of_o any_o when_o they_o shall_v expect_v and_o look_v for_o more_o than_o they_o be_v i_o kely_a to_o enjoy_v it_o be_v that_o wherein_o the_o devil_n do_v at_o first_o deceive_v our_o first_o parent_n adam_n and_o eve_n in_o paradise_n by_o raise_v their_o hope_n and_o expectation_n beyond_o that_o which_o it_o be_v probable_a they_o shall_v partake_v of_o and_o thus_o in_o like_a manner_n do_v man_n also_o deceive_v themselves_o miscarriage_n see_v jam._n 1.26_o appliable_a to_o any_o other_o miscarriage_n by_o vain_a and_o groundless_a persuasion_n of_o their_o own_o happiness_n and_o the_o welfare_n of_o the_o condition_n in_o which_o they_o be_v especial_o in_o reference_n to_o spiritual_n and_o a_o better_a life_n there_o be_v divers_a which_o be_v ready_a to_o think_v the_o case_n be_v here_o very_a well_o with_o they_o with_o who_o indeed_o it_o be_v far_o otherwise_o take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o their_o state_n be_v good_a in_o order_n to_o salvation_n who_o yet_o never_o be_v careful_a in_o all_o their_o life_n to_o work_v out_o their_o salvation_n or_o to_o walk_v in_o such_o way_n as_o may_v tend_v to_o such_o a_o end_n as_o that_o be_v but_o rather_o quite_o opposite_a to_o it_o there_o be_v many_o a_o one_o who_o make_v as_o full_a a_o account_n to_o go_v to_o heaven_n when_o he_o go_v out_o of_o the_o world_n as_o he_o do_v to_o go_v out_o of_o the_o world_n nay_o it_o may_v be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o who_o yet_o if_o god_n be_v not_o more_o merciful_a unto_o he_o must_v go_v to_o another_o place_n it_o be_v a_o point_n which_o be_v worth_a the_o follow_v if_o we_o have_v nothing_o else_o to_o speak_v of_o especial_o in_o this_o confident_a age_n which_o be_v fall_v upon_o we_o wherein_o so_o many_o both_o opinion_n and_o practice_n be_v swallow_v without_o any_o scruple_n even_o to_o rouse_v and_o better_a hand_n three_o by_o false_a performance_n and_o duty_n man_n deceive_v themselves_o also_o here_o performance_n 3_o by_o false_a performance_n he_o that_o do_v not_o any_o thing_n as_o he_o shall_v he_o do_v thereby_o deceive_v himself_o in_o the_o do_n of_o it_o slothfulness_n and_o deceitfulness_n they_o come_v both_o of_o they_o to_o one_o effect_n and_o so_o the_o same_o word_n in_o
